- 0:00Speaker 1: So we talked about this, uh quite a bit. But
- 0:04Speaker 1: we went to the Salt Lake Acting Company last Saturday
- 0:06Speaker 1: and the three of us there with a good, good audience,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and we watched their summer show called The Gaslight Zone
- 0:14Speaker 1: and it's a it's very funny and it's very it's
- 0:18Speaker 1: very satirical and there's music and uh, and each each
- 0:22Speaker 1: little vignette or scene was based on a Twilight Zone episode,
- 0:27Speaker 1: which I didn't realize.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I just thought it was inspired by but no, they
- 0:30Speaker 2: were very specific.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Episode and you don't have to know those episodes to
- 0:34Speaker 1: enjoy the show, but if you do, it kind of
- 0:36Speaker 1: gives you a little little more depth to it. And
- 0:41Speaker 1: the performers are all excellent. Scotti Fletcher who plays the
- 0:45Speaker 1: host the The Drag Queen as a broad surling broad surling.
- 0:50Speaker 2: What amazing costumes.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Beautiful costumes and he's very very good.
- 0:56Speaker 1: And but the all the Castle just U Beck, Gene Knowles,
- 1:01Speaker 1: Angel Martinez, Mark Nielsen, Mikayla, Paulos Rodriguez, Bryce Horn, Hornet,
- 1:08Speaker 1: Horror lesk Omleski, Harrison, Tim Stephanie, Gene White and Aquina
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yes Yamazuki. All of them excellent, just excellent. They danced,
- 1:18Speaker 1: they sing very funny script and then at the end,
- 1:22Speaker 1: after they've just skewered Donald Trump and Spencer Cox, at
- 1:29Speaker 1: the very end it got sort of a little bit serious.
- 1:33Speaker 1: And there was a quote at the end of the
- 1:36Speaker 1: show that from Rod Serling that that impressed all of
- 1:41Speaker 1: us and we but we didn't know quite where it
- 1:44Speaker 1: was from, and I couldn't find it and find so
- 1:46Speaker 1: I sent an email to Cynthia Fleming and said, could
- 1:50Speaker 1: you give me that quote? And she did, and then
- 1:51Speaker 1: I was able to look up what it was from.
- 1:54Speaker 1: It's from an episode of The Twilight Zone called He's Alive.
- 1:58Speaker 4: I knew the I knew it was Rod's word, but
- 2:00Speaker 4: I couldn't remember the episode.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Or it was from season four, episode four in nineteen
- 2:06Speaker 1: sixty three January of nineteen sixty three, called He's Alive
- 2:11Speaker 1: and is. It tells the story of an American neo
- 2:15Speaker 1: Nazi played by Dennis Hopper.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Very young Dennis hop Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 1: And he is visited by the ghost of Adolf Hitler
- 2:24Speaker 1: because he's not being very successful as a neo Nazi.
- 2:27Speaker 1: People throw apples and tomatoes at him. I think we
- 2:31Speaker 1: have a picture of him. There's a picture of him Ada,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and that's the guy who played Hitler. Looks a lot
- 2:36Speaker 1: like Hitler. There's at the beginning of the episode, people
- 2:40Speaker 1: throw tomatoes at him. There he is with tomato all
- 2:43Speaker 1: over his face. But Hitler coaches him and his crowds
- 2:47Speaker 1: get bigger and better. Hitler coaches him how to be.
- 2:52Speaker 4: It's kind of like the ghost of Hitler or the
- 2:55Speaker 4: memory of Hitler, because he never appears in front of anybody.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Bud Dennis Hopper, right, it's a shadowy figure.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Shadowy figure in the back of the room, and.
- 3:04Speaker 1: We don't even see that it's Hitler, although you suspect
- 3:07Speaker 1: that it is until toward the end when he steps
- 3:10Speaker 1: out of the shadows and it's this guy Hitler playing Hitler. So,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and there are some other details. But at the end
- 3:18Speaker 1: of the episode, Dennis Hopper gets killed by the police,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and we won't go into all of those details about that.
- 3:31Speaker 1: And then Rod Stewart, Rod Stuart Rod Serling comes on
- 3:35Speaker 1: with that quote and here's the whole thing. They chopped
- 3:39Speaker 1: it down a little bit. Where will he go next?
- 3:42Speaker 1: This phantom from another time, this resurrected ghost of a
- 3:46Speaker 1: previous nightmare Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Florida, Vinces, Indiana, Syracuse.
- 3:53Speaker 3: New York, mar A Lago.
- 3:54Speaker 1: No, I put that in there any place, every place,
- 3:58Speaker 1: where there's hate, where there's prejudice, where there's bigotry, He's alive.
- 4:03Speaker 1: He's alive so long as these evils exist. Remember that
- 4:08Speaker 1: when he comes to your town. Remember it when you
- 4:12Speaker 1: hear his voice speaking out through others. Remember it when
- 4:15Speaker 1: you hear a name called a minority attacked, any blind,
- 4:20Speaker 1: unreasoning assault on a people or human being. He is
- 4:24Speaker 1: alive because through those things we keep him alive. Nineteen
- 4:31Speaker 1: sixty three. Yeah, so it's just pay attention today. Remember
- 4:37Speaker 1: when Miller. Remember remember when he comes to your town.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Remember it when you hear his voice speaking, speaking out
- 4:44Speaker 1: through others.
- 4:46Speaker 3: But do you anyway?
- 4:50Speaker 1: And I watched the episode. They're all available for free
- 4:54Speaker 1: on I think it was on twob And.
- 4:57Speaker 4: They've started running him on the Sci Fi Channel on Sunday.
- 5:00Speaker 4: It used to be just over holidays and they'd have
- 5:02Speaker 4: a marathon. Now they've started running.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It a lot. So anyway, and Dennis hopper is is
- 5:07Speaker 1: really good and it's I think this was the role
- 5:11Speaker 1: a role, but I think seems to be he was
- 5:13Speaker 1: in a movie with John Wayne before this, but not
- 5:19Speaker 1: he hadn't done much and this this role.
- 5:22Speaker 3: People went, hey, that guy's pretty good, you know.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Speaking of Dennis Hopper and ghosts. Oh yeah, So he
- 5:32Speaker 2: was married to Catherine Lenasa and Catherine LaNasa is the
- 5:38Speaker 2: head nurse.
- 5:38Speaker 3: On the pit, the tough talking, tough talking.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and uh they they were married for for quite
- 5:48Speaker 2: a while and uh then then divorced and he passed away.
- 5:52Speaker 2: And she tells these stories about how he haunted her like.
- 5:57Speaker 1: He he would, and she totally believes it, seriously, he
- 6:01Speaker 1: haunted Yeah.
- 6:02Speaker 2: She recently opened up about being intensely haunted by his
- 6:05Speaker 2: ghost after his twenty ten death, experiencing visitations until a
- 6:10Speaker 2: peaceful dream in Greece finally brought her closure. But she
- 6:15Speaker 2: absolutely believes that Dennis Hopper was like showing up at
- 6:18Speaker 2: her house, she said. Lenassa revealed that Hopper's ghost would
- 6:23Speaker 2: not leave her alone for a long time, initially appearing
- 6:26Speaker 2: in upsetting ways, such as him falling out of his
- 6:29Speaker 2: wheelchair or looming over her in a sweat. After telling
- 6:33Speaker 2: her friend about a distress, she coincidentally walked past a
- 6:36Speaker 2: gallery featuring his photography and saw a picture I've been
- 6:39Speaker 2: wearing a fedora and winking like the picture winked at
- 6:42Speaker 2: her when she walked. One percent believes this.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I believe it too. Dennis Hopper had he was an
- 6:49Speaker 1: interesting fellow. He he uh. I think I remember him
- 6:55Speaker 1: from Rooster Cogber. You know what's the true Gret, True
- 7:01Speaker 1: Grit John with the John Wayne the John Wayne Won
- 7:05Speaker 1: And I think he was one of the bad gang
- 7:07Speaker 1: members and he was just excellent just being a slimy,
- 7:12Speaker 1: mean guy.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Back to Rod Serling though, and he had a lot
- 7:18Speaker 4: of Twilight's on episodes that had social commentary, and.
- 7:23Speaker 2: They had woke TV all the way back then.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, not just TV.
- 7:28Speaker 4: There was a Superman comic from long time ago, No,
- 7:33Speaker 4: this is woke. It was originally a radio program and
- 7:38Speaker 4: then then it was put in the comic book and
- 7:40Speaker 4: then they reprinted it just recently called Superman versus the Clan.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Oh yeah, I've seen that, and uh yeah, so it's
- 7:49Speaker 4: it's him fighting the kkk uh and then another Superman thing.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Because you know, I keep hearing about this woke Superman.
- 7:57Speaker 4: I'm like, no, check your comics. Yeah, here's an old
- 8:00Speaker 4: old this is from god. I can't remember how long
- 8:02Speaker 4: ago it was, But it's Superman talking to a bunch
- 8:04Speaker 4: of kids, and it says, uh, and remember, boys and girls,
- 8:08Speaker 4: your school, like our country, is made up of Americans
- 8:13Speaker 4: of many different races, religions, and national origins. So if
- 8:17Speaker 4: you hear anybody talk against a schoolmate or anyone else
- 8:21Speaker 4: because of his religion, race, or national origin, don't wait
- 8:26Speaker 4: tell him that that kind of talk is un American.
- 8:30Speaker 3: You're here? When did that come out? I thanks Superman
- 8:33Speaker 3: to find nineteen forty nine? Nice? So yeah, always Ben woke? Sorry, yes, yes, yes,
- 8:42Speaker 3: but are we listening?
- 8:43Speaker 2: That's the question?
- 8:44Speaker 3: Were not?
- 8:44Speaker 2: Well?
- 8:45Speaker 1: I was nineteen sixty three, and I think I think
- 8:48Speaker 1: what Maybe Rod Serlings knows that that people never change.
- 8:53Speaker 3: Yeah, humanity doesn't change. Yep.
