- 0:54SPEAKER_06: Yes, we did.
- 0:55SPEAKER_06: We tried it out.
- 0:56SPEAKER_06: We put on roller hockey blades.
- 0:57SPEAKER_10: Hey, hey, don't bury the lead.
- 1:01SPEAKER_10: I'm just teasing you.
- 1:02SPEAKER_10: Stupid hockey tricks, though.
- 1:04SPEAKER_06: Stupid hockey tricks.
- 1:05SPEAKER_06: That's right.
- 1:05SPEAKER_06: Rollerblade style, pickleball, uh, videos to come.
- 1:10SPEAKER_06: And uh boy, we're we're we're experiencing the sweat right now.
- 1:14SPEAKER_10: Well, um, I will shout out to the most important person in the world.
- 1:18SPEAKER_10: This is my wedding anniversary, and uh August 20th, uh, 21 years ago.
- 1:24SPEAKER_10: So not only are we having a show.
- 1:27SPEAKER_10: Why are you here with us?
- 1:28SPEAKER_10: Well, because I'm actually here on the 18th.
- 1:32SPEAKER_10: True.
- 1:33SPEAKER_10: So, but you know how great it sounds if you can like shout out your wife's anniversary on like an internationally broadcast podcast.
- 1:40SPEAKER_10: There you go.
- 1:41SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 1:42SPEAKER_10: So, but uh yeah, hot, but not as hot as it was before.
- 1:46SPEAKER_06: So, what number is uh is this?
- 1:48SPEAKER_10: 21, 21, 21 years.
- 1:50SPEAKER_06: You got big plans?
- 1:51SPEAKER_10: Um, well, we have a gig, and then we're gonna do something this weekend.
- 1:54SPEAKER_10: Nice, absolutely nice.
- 1:56SPEAKER_06: You know what a gig is, right?
- 1:57SPEAKER_06: Are you gonna are you gonna sing her a song?
- 1:59SPEAKER_10: Um, actually, we're gonna talk about that tonight.
- 2:02SPEAKER_10: Oh, okay.
- 2:03SPEAKER_10: All right.
- 2:04SPEAKER_10: Uh hey, I think we um I I find myself not having to manage a board here today.
- 2:10SPEAKER_10: So I think somebody may have joined us here that's been absent on assignment.
- 2:14SPEAKER_10: Hey, there he is.
- 2:15SPEAKER_10: What's up, gents?
- 2:16SPEAKER_10: What's going on, killer?
- 2:18SPEAKER_07: Yeah, we held out welcome back from assignment.
- 2:21SPEAKER_07: Back from assignment.
- 2:22SPEAKER_07: I heard that we had some fun at the end of the show.
- 2:25SPEAKER_07: Um, but again, don't want to bury the lead.
- 2:28SPEAKER_07: So no, no, we don't want to bury the lead.
- 2:31SPEAKER_10: We're lucky we're not buried right now.
- 2:33SPEAKER_10: No doubt.
- 2:34SPEAKER_10: No doubt.
- 2:35SPEAKER_10: So, Grant, uh, tell us a little bit about what uh what you got going on this week.
- 2:39SPEAKER_10: I think you're uh you're attending a local PGA event, if I'm not mistaken.
- 2:43SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I was at the BMW covering the BMW today.
- 2:47SPEAKER_07: Uh it was pretty cool.
- 2:48SPEAKER_07: I walked eight holes with Rory McElroy, got to see his uh about a two-hour range session from Rory.
- 2:56SPEAKER_07: So uh he was trying to find it.
- 2:59SPEAKER_07: We'll say that.
- 3:00SPEAKER_10: Did you pick anything up, man?
- 3:01SPEAKER_10: Did you pick anything up?
- 3:03SPEAKER_07: There was a lot of there was a lot of hip action that I don't think I can replicate.
- 3:09SPEAKER_07: Um but uh one of my favorite sayings about like when someone's golf on the range and they're trying to find it, if you ain't got it now, you're not gonna have it.
- 3:21SPEAKER_07: Like he was he was searching.
- 3:24SPEAKER_07: If you don't got it now, you ain't gonna get it.
- 3:27SPEAKER_07: You ain't gonna find it, Rory.
- 3:29SPEAKER_07: I mean, he had to have hit 300, 400 golf balls, and I don't think he found it.
- 3:35SPEAKER_07: Watch him go in now, watch him go in it.
- 3:37SPEAKER_07: Now, to be fair, I think he shot three under through eight holes.
- 3:40SPEAKER_07: So uh like he found it, but it wasn't what he wanted.
- 3:46SPEAKER_10: Well, we're glad to have you back here, man.
- 3:48SPEAKER_10: It's been uh a good couple interesting weeks.
- 3:52SPEAKER_10: You know, we're kind of you know getting through our our hockey off season, you know, almost into the into the regular season.
- 3:59SPEAKER_10: I think most teams here locally at least, coach, are uh are set at the youth level and uh high school levels up next.
- 4:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, if you're not uh on the other side of tryouts, you're probably have a a young player that maybe uh is in evaluations, not tryouts, uh early September.
- 4:19SPEAKER_06: Uh but it's that time of year, we're right on the cusp, and uh high school's up next, and then uh we'll be in the thick of it.
- 4:26SPEAKER_06: I mean, Labor Day is two weeks away.
- 4:28SPEAKER_10: Yeah, labor, it's hard to believe.
- 4:30SPEAKER_10: Yeah, Labor Day, and then you know, once you get in, once you hit October, it just feels like everything's going downhill.
- 4:35SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 4:36SPEAKER_10: So well, we've got uh we've got kind of uh abbreviated show tonight, maybe not abbreviated, but we're we're in between guests.
- 4:45SPEAKER_10: We've got some really fun guests that are going to be joining us in the next two weeks.
- 4:48SPEAKER_10: Um, and we just got on we're on the backside of talking with Ken Martell, which was an excellent, I thought excellent uh interview and conversation about youth hockey coaching and parents working together to help with development, parent development, parent development.
- 5:02SPEAKER_10: We do want to have a uh we want to have a parent uh CNP course for sure.
- 5:06SPEAKER_10: Absolutely, absolutely get your stripes, you know.
- 5:09SPEAKER_10: Um, talking about USA hockey and the relationship that we've been able to cultivate, one of our favorite people in all of hockey is Bob Mancini, and he's gonna be joining us next month.
- 5:19SPEAKER_10: And um, look, we we nibble around the edges sometimes when it's talking about uh or we want to wade into some topics that have strong opinions on a lot of different sides.
- 5:30SPEAKER_10: But I think uh, you know, one of the big news, one of the big things that's going on in USA hockey is the uh advent and the uh the development of the USA Hockey Development League.
- 5:44SPEAKER_10: And uh, you know, I know Bob is gonna come on and really give a lot of the insight and the perspective and the goals of USA hockey, but this has been a topic around the different campfires at all the rink rinks over the last probably six or seven months.
- 5:56SPEAKER_10: It's impacting um you know some people's decisions, uh, family decisions, even.
- 6:02SPEAKER_10: And uh I'm interested to kind of you know maybe hear what you think and and talk a little bit about what uh what we what we know, what we think we know so far.
- 6:10SPEAKER_06: We've got strong opinions.
- 6:16SPEAKER_10: Let's go.
- 6:18SPEAKER_10: Let's go.
- 6:19SPEAKER_10: Well, I think it's important.
- 6:20SPEAKER_10: Let's let let's set the stage for our audience.
- 6:22SPEAKER_10: Not everybody, you know, we are when we have our audience, we really we speak to 100% of youth hockey, but we're really hopefully focusing on the the 90%.
- 6:30SPEAKER_10: Um, and what USA hockey is uh in the process of uh of deploying next season, the 2027-28 season, is the development league.
- 6:41SPEAKER_10: And it's gonna be 32 teams within a uh kind of a closed league.
- 6:48SPEAKER_10: Um 15U and 17U will be the teams.
- 6:53SPEAKER_10: Uh originally, I believe it was supposed to be in the 32 NHL markets.
- 6:57SPEAKER_10: I think they've made some adjustments just because of demographics.
- 7:01SPEAKER_10: Um, and obviously not all 32 teams are in the United States.
- 7:05SPEAKER_10: Yeah, geography, shout-out geography.
- 7:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and the intent is uh early identification of up-and-coming players, and so um it'll be interesting to see what Bob says about that and what kind of data he's able to provide.
- 7:21SPEAKER_06: Uh personally, I think USA hockey's done a great job of identifying American-born players.
- 7:27SPEAKER_06: Uh, so clearly we're missing something uh that they felt like they needed to create a different league, another level to be able to identify these kids at U15 and U17.
- 7:40SPEAKER_10: Well, I and and that's a great point there.
- 7:42SPEAKER_10: It is a separate from tier one, tier two, you know, triple A, double A, single A.
- 7:48SPEAKER_10: It is a separate entity.
- 7:50SPEAKER_10: Um, one of the things that I actually like about this this idea is the model is to um really reduce the number of games.
- 8:00SPEAKER_10: You know, we've gotten into this in Jason Guerrero, who we've interviewed, I think he's been quoted as saying that you know youth hockey's becoming a rat race at every level.
- 8:09SPEAKER_10: And the idea of practice, develop, compete, evaluate, and practice again versus try out practice, tournament, showcase season, showcase tournament, you know, a lot of what happens in that, you know, have we I think the goal, and again, I I'm anxious to hear what Bob says, and obviously all of this is speculation until it's in action, right?
- 8:32SPEAKER_10: But I think the goal is to reduce the load on some of these players, focus in on development and evaluation and and then specialized practicing for individual players and teams and not play you know 60, 70, 80 games in some instances.
- 8:51SPEAKER_10: I think they're trying to cap it at 55 total games.
- 8:54SPEAKER_06: Well, it and then that's a step in the right direction.
- 8:57SPEAKER_06: I think we've talked about this on prior shows before, but uh it's too many games.
- 9:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah, uh 60 plus games is too many games for kids to be playing hockey.
- 9:06SPEAKER_11: Yep.
- 9:07SPEAKER_06: Uh, I can give you evidence, direct evidence of it.
- 9:10SPEAKER_06: Kids that are getting hip replacements at 18 years old means that they're playing too many hockey games.
- 9:18SPEAKER_06: So uh stress injuries, things like that.
- 9:21SPEAKER_06: So I love if that is the intention of USA hockey to have fewer games out there.
- 9:27SPEAKER_06: I think that is a step in the right direction.
- 9:30SPEAKER_06: Uh, personally, I think somewhere between 40 and 55-ish games is kind of a sweet spot.
- 9:37SPEAKER_06: Uh part of it for me and uh my strong opinions around it is we've now created another level, another etchelon.
- 9:47SPEAKER_06: And we were just talking the last two weeks about parents and FOMO and parents that are invested.
- 9:54SPEAKER_06: And because parents have sent kids to hockey camps, then that means it's automatically gonna translate into success.
- 10:01SPEAKER_06: So now we've created another level of youth hockey, another ladder to climb, and uh it's gonna trickle down to the parents, and so then you're gonna have parents that are gonna say, Well, oh my gosh, my kid truly needs to be uh in triple A hockey at U9 because how else will he get into the development league?
- 10:22SPEAKER_06: Which isn't even really if if he does isn't a quadruple triple A player uh at nine years old.
- 10:29SPEAKER_06: So um I I that is the challenge for me.
- 10:34SPEAKER_06: Um and then what happens to kids that maybe are on the cusp of that tier two thinking about you know developing into tier one.
- 10:46SPEAKER_06: So now you go into a tier one level, but you're not in the development league.
- 10:51SPEAKER_06: So where are you then?
- 10:53SPEAKER_06: What what what what does that mean?
- 10:56SPEAKER_10: You know, I I have um some people would say crazy ideas, um, whether we're talking about mid-states and midget hockey or whether we're talking about just the way we should be, you know, governing youth hockey and all of youth sports, really.
- 11:12SPEAKER_10: Um my hopes are, and this is gonna be very controversial, is we reduce the number of just tier one, tier two programs.
- 11:25SPEAKER_10: And maybe what we do, and and I know that there's been a lot of talk and a lot of collaboration with the Scandinavian countries in particular, Finland and Sweden.
- 11:34SPEAKER_10: You know, does it make sense that kids stay with their friends and their hometown teams until they're 14 years old?
- 11:41SPEAKER_06: Yeah, to me, this is um uh maybe an unintended quant consequence that USA hockey may experience.
- 11:49SPEAKER_06: Uh, you're gonna have kids that maybe last year uh wanted to continue to develop and maybe get a chance to get into uh maybe that tier one level, that triple A level, that now are gonna look at this and they're gonna be like, you know what?
- 12:05SPEAKER_06: I'm just gonna stay and play with my buddies, which is perfectly fine uh and understandable.
- 12:11SPEAKER_06: And I'm just gonna continue to develop at a level where I don't have to do that.
- 12:18SPEAKER_06: Um, because if you're a triple A player out there now, I this is what kind of feeds it for me is wow, I made it to AAA.
- 12:29SPEAKER_06: Maybe if I have a really good season, then I could get picked up for the development league.
- 12:35SPEAKER_06: Here's the problem with that it's a U15 league and a U17 league.
- 12:39SPEAKER_06: Do you have to be uh 15 to play in the U15 league?
- 12:43SPEAKER_10: I think they'll probably take an so this is where you talk about the bio banding and you talk about your your your body maturity versus your age maturity.
- 12:53SPEAKER_06: Do you take a 14-year-old kid?
- 12:58SPEAKER_10: I would I would hope not.
- 13:00SPEAKER_10: Um this goes back to how are we governing these 32 teams in the development league?
- 13:06SPEAKER_10: Who's running it on the local level?
- 13:08SPEAKER_06: And is it only open to Americans?
- 13:10SPEAKER_10: It is only open to Americans.
- 13:11SPEAKER_10: It is the development U.S.
- 13:13SPEAKER_10: hockey development league.
- 13:14SPEAKER_10: Um, what my concern is beyond that is you know, take a situation like you just said, I don't want to stay home with my friends.
- 13:24SPEAKER_10: I'm gonna start packing my suitcases and trying to find uh a place that's got that extra letter on it.
- 13:29SPEAKER_10: Or maybe if I can't make the St.
- 13:31SPEAKER_10: Louis Development League, maybe I go up into the Wisconsin one.
- 13:34SPEAKER_10: Or maybe I if I'm in LA and I don't make you know, what are the what do you think?
- 13:38SPEAKER_06: Well, wait a minute.
- 13:39SPEAKER_06: The uh the the development leagues, my understanding is there's a for our dis for our ours that'll be a central district.
- 13:46SPEAKER_06: So if you're a St.
- 13:47SPEAKER_06: Louis kid, you have to beat out kids in Chicago, yeah, uh Iowa, Wisconsin, uh Nebraska.
- 13:56SPEAKER_06: And so you're not just simply competing with local St.
- 14:01SPEAKER_06: Louis kids if you're a St.
- 14:02SPEAKER_06: Louis kid, uh, you're competing with kids from five different states, and then that team is your central district team, is my understanding of the way that it's gonna work.
- 14:14SPEAKER_06: Which, you know, uh uh that's a challenge.
- 14:17SPEAKER_06: And then if you take kids that are younger, um, and and I think this is really, really important.
- 14:23SPEAKER_06: My kids started growing, my youngest started growing when he was 12 and a half, and then he grew like a foot.
- 14:29SPEAKER_06: Uh, we've experienced this as coaches.
- 14:31SPEAKER_06: You have kids that hit puberty early and kids that don't.
- 14:35SPEAKER_06: And so are you is USA hockey going to take a you know, an early grower, a 13-year-old, a 14-year-old?
- 14:44SPEAKER_06: And so you might have some 15-year-olds out there that are like, yeah, I got a really good shot at it, but you know, there's some kid in Wisconsin uh on a farm who plays hockey built like an ox who uh uh might have a leg up on you.
- 15:00SPEAKER_10: So everything you said is correct except for the district.
- 15:04SPEAKER_10: Kids can go from anywhere in the country and uh and and like if you're a kid in LA and you don't make your development league in LA, you can go to there's 32 teams.
- 15:14SPEAKER_10: They're in every single US NHL market, plus I think seven or eight non-NHL markets.
- 15:21SPEAKER_06: Okay, so it's not so it's not a district team.
- 15:23SPEAKER_06: No, it's not.
- 15:24SPEAKER_06: It's a it's a it's a city team.
- 15:27SPEAKER_10: It's a city team.
- 15:27SPEAKER_10: Okay, and um that's better odds.
- 15:30SPEAKER_10: Now, where you were the question I I got wrong and you asked, they can take each team can take up to two non-U.S.
- 15:36SPEAKER_10: citizens.
- 15:38SPEAKER_10: Which I that to me, I don't understand why.
- 15:41SPEAKER_10: I don't understand why.
- 15:42SPEAKER_06: I mean that's uh I mean to me that's dead on arrival.
- 15:45SPEAKER_06: This is USA hockey.
- 15:48SPEAKER_10: Well, and think about it this way.
- 15:50SPEAKER_10: I mean, look, we have a great talent pool here in St.
- 15:52SPEAKER_10: Louis.
- 15:53SPEAKER_10: If you only have one team in Michigan, those kids are gonna play.
- 15:56SPEAKER_10: There's gonna be kids that don't make that DL team that are gonna be going to other teams just because of the call Massachusetts, not Michigan.
- 16:03SPEAKER_10: Call it Minnesota, call it wherever.
- 16:06SPEAKER_10: I mean, it's gonna be tough.
- 16:07SPEAKER_10: Like you're gonna have, and so my fear is is you don't make a team as a 15U.
- 16:13SPEAKER_10: Do you pack your bags?
- 16:15SPEAKER_10: Do parents start getting with agents?
- 16:16SPEAKER_10: Do we start to see we've got AAU right now at the 6U level?
- 16:21SPEAKER_10: Do we start seeing AAU teams pop up?
- 16:23SPEAKER_10: I mean, where does this what I'm hopeful that it's a it's a good thing, but I know that there's a lot of slippery slopes.
- 16:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I think we have to come back and kind of rein it in because uh our audience is the 90 plus percent of the kids out there that are playing tier two hockey.
- 16:41SPEAKER_06: So this is double A, A, and B and C hockey.
- 16:45SPEAKER_06: Uh, and so let's try to think of it from their view.
- 16:48SPEAKER_06: From their view, we've now added another layer.
- 16:51SPEAKER_06: Uh, in some ways, that's good because it's always good to know what path you're on and what a potential journey is.
- 16:58SPEAKER_06: And let's say you're a 14-year-old kid out there.
- 17:02SPEAKER_06: Uh, we both know that you're not done developing until you're 23.
- 17:07SPEAKER_06: So I guess it's good in the aspect that USA hockey has said, hey kid, here's your ramp.
- 17:13SPEAKER_06: Uh, here's the different levels.
- 17:15SPEAKER_06: By the way, we've added another level now.
- 17:18SPEAKER_06: Um, but keep working on your game, keep doing things.
- 17:23SPEAKER_06: Um uh, but uh it just from the outside to me seems unnecessary.
- 17:30SPEAKER_06: Uh I must be missing something where we aren't identifying kids at a young age.
- 17:36SPEAKER_06: For example, there must be some kind of data that USA hockey has that said um uh John Doe uh went to Switzerland, went to Sweden and played instead of staying in the USA.
- 17:52SPEAKER_06: And because we've lost this kid, uh, or went to Canada, went to another country, uh USA hockeys missed out on this.
- 18:01SPEAKER_06: So there has to be some kind of data.
- 18:03SPEAKER_06: I'd be very interested in hearing that hard numbers like we've lost out on, you know, 12% of kids that could have stayed in the USA hockey program.
- 18:13SPEAKER_06: Uh, and some of this makes me wonder too, if some of it was uh some of the recent rule changes that have happened uh between USA hockey and Canada.
- 18:23SPEAKER_06: So I don't know if that's a factor in it.
- 18:25SPEAKER_06: I'll be really interested to hear what Bob has to say about it.
- 18:28SPEAKER_10: You know, I think that there is some talk about being coming becoming more restrictive on the on the tier one level, not allowing kids um at 18U, like having a percentage kind of like what they have in the uh overseas in the KHL, the import rule, so to speak.
- 18:43SPEAKER_10: You can only have so many imports.
- 18:45SPEAKER_10: Um if this drives home better behavior at the district, at the affiliate and at the organizational levels, where kids and families are recognizing that the the rat race, as Jason, as I as I'm paraphrasing put it, doesn't get started until at least 15.
- 19:06SPEAKER_10: Think about that runway um and that that truly like falling in love with the sport, getting better coaching at that at that um younger age level.
- 19:16SPEAKER_10: Um, but if this then pivots and you have bad actors out there, which again, I can't blame USA hockey for bad actors or your people who are trying to take advantage of the system, um, as long as they work after identifying these these loopholes to try and close them.
- 19:33SPEAKER_10: Um but if we're seeing you know kids moving across country to play hockey or try out for a team that is three time zones away from where they grew up at 15 years old, I I would um can't tell a person how to parent, but I would I would strongly encourage you to to maybe let nature take its course and don't chase it.
- 19:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's you know, uh again, there must be something, uh, some some data that we need.
- 20:04SPEAKER_06: Um, it's hard for me to think that in 2026, when literally every single day when I look at my phone and my feed, I'm seeing a hockey highlight of a youth hockey kid.
- 20:18SPEAKER_06: There has never been a better time in the history of uh of time to be able to amplify uh your skills as a hockey player.
- 20:30SPEAKER_06: So I don't know what our all of our listeners' social media feeds look like.
- 20:34SPEAKER_06: Uh mine's filled with a bunch of hockey stuff, and uh there's hockey highlights all over the place.
- 20:40SPEAKER_06: So uh again, um uh hard for me to believe that people aren't being seen in the day of social media and uh you know instant recognition.
- 20:51SPEAKER_10: You're gonna get found.
- 20:52SPEAKER_10: You're gonna get found.
- 20:53SPEAKER_06: You're gonna get found, exactly.
- 20:55SPEAKER_10: You know, and and we talked with Chris Durso a few like a few months back, and we were talking about the pathways for ACHA, and you know, there's so many kids that we've coached at Ledue High School who are playing ACH ACHA hockey, you know.
- 21:12SPEAKER_10: And to me, it's it's it's understanding that um if this is done in the right way, and again, we're we're we're still in this major speculation mode, and we're excited to talk with Bob and kind of get his perspective here.
- 21:26SPEAKER_10: But I think it's it's important for us to talk about this because it it does impact all of hockey.
- 21:32SPEAKER_10: We we speak to 100% of the audience, we like to focus on the 90%.
- 21:36SPEAKER_10: And if there is a way for this to actually strengthen the 90% at younger ages, where we take some of the pressure off of these parents and coaches and organizations to play, play, play all these games, it it it kind of mirrors what they do in NCAA college.
- 21:54SPEAKER_10: NCAA, they play forty games, 20 weeks, two games each week.
- 21:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I mean in there.
- 22:00SPEAKER_06: There's got to be data behind that studies that have happened.
- 22:04SPEAKER_06: And uh they've determined that uh a shorter season, if you remember, of games is uh is good.
- 22:11SPEAKER_06: But uh I'll be interested to hear what Bob has to say about it.
- 22:14SPEAKER_10: Well, you know, I'm sure we've uh burned a few ears and and got some people's blood pressure up who've listened, and that's great.
- 22:21SPEAKER_10: We want to make sure that we're challenging and we're having good conversation.
- 22:24SPEAKER_10: And and you know, I think you and I, you know, we don't even know all the facts, and we were you know kind of like, well, I thought it was this, I thought it was that.
- 22:32SPEAKER_10: But um, you know, the biggest thing that I I the one positive I see out of it is if it sets a tempo, if it says, hey, this is gonna be the pinnacle of our of our youth hockey development, and if they set the tempo at no more than 55 games, well, then you have a very tough time arguing if you are a double A or AAA team, or even a single A team that is playing more than that, or attempting to go out of town and play more tournaments.
- 23:02SPEAKER_10: Um, so it'll be interesting to see this also this is also gonna have an interesting thing with the tournaments.
- 23:06SPEAKER_06: So so what I'm hearing you say from your view is that you think it's gonna have a trickle down and that uh lower level clubs will adopt it as a model, having fewer games.
- 23:19SPEAKER_06: We already know that single A and B and C uh teams already have fewer games.
- 23:25SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 23:25SPEAKER_06: Uh, so it's really gonna be that kind of middle buffer between, I'd say, AA and triple A teams that then are gonna look at this model and say, you know what, they're telling us we shouldn't play more than 55 games, so we should kind of fall in line.
- 23:41SPEAKER_06: And instead of us playing 80 games like we've done in the past, let's play 55.
- 23:46SPEAKER_10: Yeah, and it's gonna be interesting.
- 23:47SPEAKER_10: There's a cottage industry.
- 23:48SPEAKER_06: Does that mean it's gonna get cheaper?
- 23:50SPEAKER_10: Well, that's what I was about to say.
- 23:52SPEAKER_10: Yeah, there's a cottage industry, as you well know, of showcases and uh playoff leagues, tournament leagues, whether it's SPHL or you know, breakouts or showcases that happen from August 1st to like almost the middle of October.
- 24:05SPEAKER_10: That's a lot of money.
- 24:06SPEAKER_06: So let me ask you something.
- 24:07SPEAKER_06: Do you think practice practices go up or practices go down with fewer games?
- 24:13SPEAKER_10: They need to go up.
- 24:15SPEAKER_10: And and what I mean by that is is you don't even like you have to have uh more intentional practices.
- 24:22SPEAKER_06: Okay, more intentional practices, so more more quality practices.
- 24:26SPEAKER_10: I that's what I've hoped for.
- 24:27SPEAKER_06: And again, and there's some kind of ratio probably there that you want to stay within.
- 24:33SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's the that that's another danger I worry about.
- 24:36SPEAKER_06: We'll take fewer games, but guess what?
- 24:37SPEAKER_06: We bought more ice, yeah, and uh we're gonna practice we're we're gonna throw more practices on the schedule.
- 24:43SPEAKER_10: Well, I think part of that though is not every practice, not every interaction needs to be on the ice, could be virtual.
- 24:50SPEAKER_10: You know, we do a lot of things now, virtual kids are living in their phones and in that world, and they're you know, if you look at the NHL, those most of the NHLers were just kids a couple years ago, so they didn't just learn overnight how to use those iPads and phones.
- 25:03SPEAKER_10: I think that, and then let's just be honest, keep them get them playing other sports.
- 25:09SPEAKER_10: And I know there's people out there who are like, how is my kid ever gonna become a triple A player or an NCA Division I player if he's not or she's not playing, you know, up to 70 plus games.
- 25:21SPEAKER_06: Or in or in four camps, yeah, all at the same time over the summer.
- 25:25SPEAKER_10: Well, and the other thing about this is look, I guarantee we know that they're like the knee-jerk reaction.
- 25:30SPEAKER_10: Um, there's gonna be a lot of people wanting this to fail, similar to what the ADM was years ago.
- 25:35SPEAKER_10: And I think Bob and Goose will tell you the ADM, nothing is perfect, it's an it's it's evolving.
- 25:41SPEAKER_10: And my hopes are, and again, I'm just going by what I've read, um, and then obviously listening to people who have very strong opinions about this both negatively and positively.
- 25:51SPEAKER_10: Um, my hopes are is that okay, we get this rolling, and all of a sudden we start to see that um kids are healthier.
- 26:00SPEAKER_10: We're developing kids, um, kids who, as they age, maybe get that shot when they're 19, 20 years old.
- 26:07SPEAKER_10: We don't just turn the faucet off at 18, they get a shot.
- 26:10SPEAKER_10: Um, maybe this regulates some of the junior um leagues that are out there that um can be a little bit predatory sometimes in nature.
- 26:20SPEAKER_10: Those some of the the the I don't I don't want to call them fringe junior leagues, but they're looking to fill bodies.
- 26:26SPEAKER_10: And maybe this brings a little bit more sanity to the sport that frankly has become a lot of keeping up with the Joneses.
- 26:34SPEAKER_06: I I love your Rosie outlook.
- 26:36SPEAKER_10: That's my hope.
- 26:38SPEAKER_09: Well, I'm always a half, I'm a half full, glass half full guy.
- 26:42SPEAKER_10: But my wife also is like, you know, hope is not a strategy.
- 26:45SPEAKER_10: So that is true.
- 26:48SPEAKER_10: Well, we've taken up a big chunk of time here, and I think it's time that we uh take a break and pay a couple bills, and then we're gonna come back and do a quick uh drill draw presented by Drift and then finish off with some stupid hockey tricks.
- 27:02SPEAKER_10: So don't go anywhere you're listening to Too Many Men on the Mike presented to you by Vantage Credit Union.

- 28:02SPEAKER_06: Membership eligibility required.
- 28:04SPEAKER_06: Now, let's get back to the show.
- 28:12SPEAKER_10: Well, you know when you hear the uh NHL 94 Chicago Blackhawks organ music, you know it's time for one thing.
- 28:20SPEAKER_10: It's drill draw powered by Drift, the all-in-one hockey tool that's built from the bench.
- 28:25SPEAKER_10: Drift hockey, go to drifthockey.com.
- 28:28SPEAKER_10: This allows you to do everything from setting your schedules, creating rosters, messaging players, sending videos all in one place.
- 28:34SPEAKER_10: Drift hockey powered from the bench.
- 28:37SPEAKER_10: All right, coach.
- 28:39SPEAKER_10: We're gonna go and uh we're gonna look at a little power play, little little um odd man game here that uh has a little bit of retrieval, breakout, gapping, um, overload on one side, perhaps.
- 28:55SPEAKER_10: Um ultimately you want it should hit the net.
- 28:57SPEAKER_10: Um, but uh this is uh a power play drill teaching concepts of power play and moving with the power play that uh that I've done for a few years.
- 29:08SPEAKER_10: We've done it at Ledou.
- 29:09SPEAKER_10: And so let's pull up here the uh the virtual whiteboard and invite it to the stage.
- 29:17SPEAKER_10: There we go.
- 29:19SPEAKER_10: And we call this the 4v2, 4v3 um you know, odd man power play uh game.
- 29:26SPEAKER_10: And so we set the game up, kind of unique.
- 29:29SPEAKER_10: We put uh the one net here right at center ice, like so, and then we put a second net in the crease but facing the boards.
- 29:40SPEAKER_10: Uh both both nets will have a goaltender in them.
- 29:43SPEAKER_10: Uh so we'll go ahead and put the goalies in there.
- 29:47SPEAKER_10: The goalies are their own guys or gals in this one because they're just there to stop the puck here.
- 29:52SPEAKER_10: But what we do is now what we'll set up is we'll play one team on one side of the net and we'll make them blue.
- 30:02SPEAKER_10: And one, two, they go here laterally down the red line.
- 30:08SPEAKER_10: And the other team, let's say they're red, we'll go the opposite way laterally down the laterally.
- 30:15SPEAKER_10: Can I say that today or not?
- 30:16SPEAKER_10: Laterally, laterally down the red line.
- 30:20SPEAKER_10: And to start off, you know, I like to say pick a number one through five to a to a to a player on both teams, but you can just say, hey, blue's gonna start off on offense.
- 30:31SPEAKER_10: Um, and what we'll do here is in that situation, four blue players are gonna go down and retrieve a puck that the coach dumps in.
- 30:39SPEAKER_10: So the coach is dumping a puck in all the way down the end of the end of the ice here to the opposite end.
- 30:47SPEAKER_10: And we send four players in on a oh shoot.
- 30:51SPEAKER_10: I used the wrong button there, and we send four players in on essentially what is a puck retrieval, and then structured four-man breakout to come back and attack this net.
- 31:02SPEAKER_10: So let's go ahead and do that here.
- 31:04SPEAKER_10: We'll do a little player movement, and we'll take uh actually let's just make them P1 through P4, because that's uh these guys will be in the play.
- 31:25SPEAKER_10: We'll have on the red side, we'll have we'll start off with a uh four on two.
- 31:30SPEAKER_10: So we'll have red players P1 and P2 over here.
- 31:40SPEAKER_10: And so the blue players are heading down, they are uh obviously like I said, communicating.
- 31:47SPEAKER_10: One man's gonna or one player's gonna pick up the puck, the other three are gonna support, and we're gonna basically have a structured four-man breakout coming back and attacking four on two, and they can meanwhile.
- 32:04SPEAKER_10: The red players are looking at this and they're saying, Okay, we've got to basically defend.
- 32:12SPEAKER_10: And so, how are they entering the game?
- 32:14SPEAKER_10: Are they coming down and applying any pressure?
- 32:16SPEAKER_10: Are they basically doing it at three levels where you've got one player applying some pressure, another player kind of playing in the mid mid-zone, and then obviously you have the goalie back retrieving.
- 32:27SPEAKER_10: We play this now.
- 32:28SPEAKER_10: Here's the key if the red players get possession, they can come down and score.
- 32:34SPEAKER_10: And if you want to throw in another little uh a little uh bonus, if they get possession, the coach can elect to release a third player.
- 32:41SPEAKER_10: So now it becomes four on three.
- 32:43SPEAKER_10: Yeah, make it progressive, yeah, make it progressive, and you keep playing back and forth.
- 32:47SPEAKER_10: But what we're trying to teach here is obviously similar to what Ken Martell last week said, try and put that puck at different places off the wall, force the players to go down and retrieve that puck in different positions.
- 32:58SPEAKER_10: The offensive players are communicating, their heads up, they're back attacking the ice quickly, they're making sure they've got good spaces.
- 33:05SPEAKER_10: Hopefully, there's puck movement, and the red players are deciding if they're on defense to start, how aggressive am I going to be with my attack and for check on the puck?
- 33:14SPEAKER_10: Am I going to sit back and try and um almost bring like a tight uh defense in front of the net to make it difficult and force the players to score from outside?
- 33:23SPEAKER_10: Um, and then obviously you've got the goaltender there as well.
- 33:26SPEAKER_10: You can run this as a four-on-two to start, you can run it as a five on three to start, you can run it as a four on three to start.
- 33:32SPEAKER_10: But the beauty of this game, very simple, and everybody can score.
- 33:38SPEAKER_09: I like it.
- 33:39SPEAKER_10: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:40SPEAKER_10: So, not a major in and there's not a lot of thinking that goes into this one, which is also sometimes with our drills, and by design, we want those kids and our players to constantly be processing, not just you know, with their hands and their feet, but also between the ears.
- 33:54SPEAKER_10: This one is hey, we've got four players, you've got two, we should be scoring.
- 33:58SPEAKER_10: Absolutely, and so it's an aggressive game.
- 34:00SPEAKER_10: Um, we find that kids start talking in line on what they're gonna do, and there's key, and there's enough distance to where you can get some speed and momentum going.
- 34:08SPEAKER_06: Yep, absolutely.
- 34:09SPEAKER_06: So you should use your speed uh uh and use it as an advantage.
- 34:13SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 34:14SPEAKER_10: So a lot of teams have different names for this.
- 34:16SPEAKER_10: They usually will say it's like their team mascot four on two or power play concepts.
- 34:20SPEAKER_10: We call it the Ledou four on two to four on three power play concept game.
- 34:25SPEAKER_10: If you're running uh practice this week or this weekend, head over to our website, two minimen on the mic.com.
- 34:30SPEAKER_10: That's the number two.

- 37:18SPEAKER_06: How about that song?
- 37:21SPEAKER_10: It's kind of stupid.
- 37:25SPEAKER_10: Well, um, we could probably stop recording and then just you you at that point just go right to you outside.
- 37:33SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 37:34SPEAKER_10: So let's do that.
- 37:35SPEAKER_07: Right, and then right now we'll just we'll just We got Coach Jared over here donning the rollerblades for the first time in six years.
- 37:44SPEAKER_07: And Coach Drew Colorado Buffaloes.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
- 37:49SPEAKER_07: He's ready roll.
- 37:50SPEAKER_07: He's got nice paddles here.
- 37:52SPEAKER_07: Coach Jared's are kind of crappy.
- 37:54SPEAKER_07: Alright, gentlemen, we're playing to six.
- 37:57SPEAKER_07: We're playing to five.
- 37:59SPEAKER_07: I want a clean game here.
- 38:01SPEAKER_04: All I know is uh the talent it takes to play football on rollerblade.
- 38:07SPEAKER_06: And a second, is full contact allowed.
- 38:10SPEAKER_07: This is uh this is a contactless sport.
- 38:13SPEAKER_04: Well, you gotta put a little bit of a little bit of juice out there.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: This is why I this is why this game is a struggle for me.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: There's no contact.
- 38:23SPEAKER_10: Well, you know, it's all about skill.
- 38:25SPEAKER_10: So, you know, you gotta be able to like avoid the contact.
- 38:30SPEAKER_04: But hey, I say we put a little skin of the game.
- 38:33SPEAKER_04: Uh, you did mount this with trivia last week.
- 38:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, there's a good chance you're gonna beat me because you're a much better rollerblade than I played rollerblade in uh interior uh Greek league back in college.
- 38:45SPEAKER_03: 35 years ago.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: I played with I played with my son during COVID out in front of our house.
- 38:52SPEAKER_04: That's the last time.
- 38:53SPEAKER_06: Don't act like that's fast performance, buddy.
- 38:55SPEAKER_04: Hey, all I know is is roller hockey's a St.
- 38:59SPEAKER_04: Louis thing.
- 39:00SPEAKER_04: And he's a St.
- 39:00SPEAKER_04: Louis guy, so let's they don't play roller they don't play roller hockey in Michigan?
- 39:05SPEAKER_04: Not like they do down here.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: It's amazing.
- 39:07SPEAKER_04: Anyways, I think I should maybe get next.
- 39:09SPEAKER_04: I should start up like one-nothing, right?
- 39:12SPEAKER_07: Hey.
- 39:13SPEAKER_07: Here we go.
- 39:14SPEAKER_07: First one to five.
- 39:17SPEAKER_07: I'm the ref.
- 39:22SPEAKER_07: Whoa, whoa, whoa! The boundary is the second.
- 39:30SPEAKER_07: And then the line, the line behind it is out.
- 39:33SPEAKER_07: Two lines.
- 39:36SPEAKER_07: Yeah, two lines is out.
- 39:40SPEAKER_07: All right, here we go.
- 39:41SPEAKER_07: Zero zero.
- 39:42SPEAKER_07: Let's do it.
- 39:48SPEAKER_07: One zero, Coach Jared.
- 40:18SPEAKER_07: I think that's in two zero.
- 40:25SPEAKER_07: Three zero.
- 40:27SPEAKER_07: Coach Drew needs a point.
- 40:36SPEAKER_07: That's out.
- 40:38SPEAKER_07: Three one, Coach Drew on the board.
- 40:41SPEAKER_07: Three one.
- 40:49SPEAKER_07: Oh one, we got matched.
- 41:02SPEAKER_07: That's point.
- 41:08SPEAKER_07: I'm recording.
- 41:11SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 41:13SPEAKER_07: For the match.
- 41:22SPEAKER_07: That's the game.
- 41:28SPEAKER_07: All right, best two out of three.
- 41:30SPEAKER_07: Let's do it.
- 41:31SPEAKER_07: All right, Coach Jared won the first game.
- 41:33SPEAKER_07: He gets a serve.
- 41:38SPEAKER_07: Oh, what a hit.
- 41:40SPEAKER_07: That's in.
- 41:42SPEAKER_07: That looked in to me.
- 41:46SPEAKER_07: That looks in line, yeah.
- 41:53SPEAKER_07: I need a line judge.
- 41:58SPEAKER_07: That was a pretty good shot.
- 42:00SPEAKER_07: You wouldn't have been able to you wouldn't have been able to hit another one though.
- 42:10SPEAKER_07: One one! Coach Drew responds.
- 42:14SPEAKER_07: All right, Coach Jared won the first game.
- 42:16SPEAKER_07: He gets a serve.
- 42:20SPEAKER_07: Oh, what a hit! That's in.
- 42:25SPEAKER_07: That looked in to me.
- 42:29SPEAKER_07: That looks in line, yeah.
- 42:35SPEAKER_07: I need a line judge.
- 42:41SPEAKER_07: That was a pretty good shot.
- 42:43SPEAKER_07: You wouldn't have been able to you wouldn't have been able to hit another one though.
- 42:53SPEAKER_07: One one! Coach Drew responds.
- 43:04SPEAKER_07: Two one.
- 43:07SPEAKER_07: Coach Jared trying to put a dominant performance out there.
- 43:12SPEAKER_07: Two one.
- 43:18SPEAKER_07: Two two.
- 43:29SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 43:29SPEAKER_07: Two two.
- 43:30SPEAKER_07: I've switched angles.
- 43:38SPEAKER_07: I need uh I need an honest I need honesty from Coach Drew.
- 43:42SPEAKER_07: Is that in or out?
- 43:47SPEAKER_07: He's a man of his word.
- 43:48SPEAKER_07: He's a man of his word.
- 43:51SPEAKER_07: Three two.
- 43:53SPEAKER_07: This is a gentleman's game.
- 44:00SPEAKER_07: Wow, what a serve.
- 44:02SPEAKER_07: Four two.
- 44:05SPEAKER_07: All right, game point here.
- 44:12SPEAKER_07: Oh, Valley Four Three.
- 44:20SPEAKER_07: That's out.
- 44:22SPEAKER_07: That is out.
- 44:24SPEAKER_07: Four four.
- 44:25SPEAKER_07: We got deciding point right here.
- 44:27SPEAKER_07: Someone's gonna win it.
- 44:29SPEAKER_07: No win by two.
- 44:35SPEAKER_07: Oh Coach Jared!
- 44:40unknown: Look at that.
- 44:42SPEAKER_07: He does it!
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: So you actually can play paddle ball.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: Paddleball?
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: Pickleball.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: And hockey gloves.
- 44:50SPEAKER_11: Well, you know, I'd just like to thank all the fans at home for being All right, that is stupid hockey trick.
- 44:58SPEAKER_06: Well, that was a good sweat.
- 45:01SPEAKER_10: We're lucky we're not dead.
- 45:04SPEAKER_06: I mean, seriously.
- 45:08SPEAKER_06: There's movement, but there's not stopping.
- 45:11SPEAKER_10: When I looked up and I saw you almost spill.
- 45:15SPEAKER_10: But think about it.
- 45:16SPEAKER_10: You got two guys over the age of 50 out there in rollerblades, hockey equipment, and uneven surfaces on a cracked asphalt asphalt parking lot.
- 45:27SPEAKER_10: Trying to play pickleball.
- 45:28SPEAKER_10: And I think we quitted ourselves well.
- 45:30SPEAKER_10: Oh my gosh, absolutely.
