Latest / 987 The Shock Circuit / INTERVIEW: MARCUS PANG (GAZING POWER WASH)
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: We have a very special guest joining us, maybe say
- 0:05Speaker 1: in 10 minutes' time live on the show and on
- 0:08Speaker 1: TikTok as well, and I feel quite sad. I, I
- 0:10Speaker 1: was hoping he could do what he does on the
- 0:13Speaker 1: daily for us here at 987 or maybe even Media Corp,
- 0:16Speaker 1: but that was plenty of emails that I'm not ready
- 0:18Speaker 1: to write. I know, and I, I just think that
- 0:23Speaker 1: it would be cool if he had like a massive
- 0:25Speaker 1: platform out there to do something. You would have seen
- 0:27Speaker 1: some of his videos going viral on social media.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Made the news because when he power washed a certain
- 0:33Speaker 1: MRT station's pavement, people complained, and then it was removed. Yeah,
- 0:39Speaker 1: it got wiped. But then all the members of parliament
- 0:41Speaker 1: have reached out to him saying, hey, how about you
- 0:42Speaker 1: come to my area and do this and all that. Yeah.
- 0:45Speaker 1: So we got the man himself, Marcus Pang, joining us
- 0:48Speaker 1: in the studio. I'm very excited and I'm, I'm sure
- 0:50Speaker 1: he has lots of stories to tell us. So he's
- 0:52Speaker 1: gonna be here. We're also going to be live on
- 0:54Speaker 1: TikTok in less than 20 minutes. Singapore's.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Number one hit music station, The Chainsmokers just performed at
- 1:00Speaker 1: Tomorrowland actually. And they, and they are performing the weekend
- 1:04Speaker 1: and you'll be there as well. Oh, that, yeah, some,
- 1:06Speaker 1: so some DJs are doing twice, like, uh, two different sets, right?
- 1:09Speaker 1: I'm assuming, yeah. I cannot believe we're gonna catch Sebastian Grosso.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I know, I'm excited. Steve Angelo and all that. Anyway,
- 1:14Speaker 1: bringing you back here to Singapore right now. You know,
- 1:17Speaker 1: we always want to feature interesting profiles, people who are
- 1:20Speaker 1: really pursuing their passions and just breaking off from the
- 1:23Speaker 1: ordinary and doing what they want to do.
- 1:24Speaker 1: It's interesting because yesterday we had Life is an art, Clarissa,
- 1:28Speaker 1: who's a live painter with watercolors and all that. Today
- 1:31Speaker 1: it's a different form of art in a very unique way,
- 1:35Speaker 1: and I'm not too sure if you've seen this on
- 1:37Speaker 1: social media, even the news as well. It went viral.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Videos of someone power washing the pavements of the MRT
- 1:43Speaker 1: stations here in Singapore. It was removed. The police were
- 1:46Speaker 1: called down. Can I admit that I didn't quite understand
- 1:49Speaker 1: the concept of power washing before that.
- 1:52Speaker 1: I was just like, wait, how does that happen? You're
- 1:54Speaker 1: not alone. Me too. Thankfully, he's here in the studio
- 1:57Speaker 1: now to tell us more. We have him say hello to.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Hello Marcus.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Hi Joakim. Hi Sonia. Thanks for having me.
- 2:04Speaker 1: No, of
- 2:05Speaker 1: course. So how do people address you now? Like power
- 2:07Speaker 1: washer Marcus or the washing the washing guy. OK, so
- 2:13Speaker 1: that's how people, well, take us through the whole process. Like,
- 2:16Speaker 1: power washing is something that's pretty foreign to us. Like
- 2:19Speaker 1: we would not have known about this, to be honest.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Did you wake up one day and you just went like, yes,
- 2:24Speaker 1: I have a talent? Or how did that happen? Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Well, originally I didn't start with the power washing, uh,
- 2:30Speaker 2: other aspect of it. I originally started it as a
- 2:33Speaker 2: side hustle, but I started this uh side hustle during
- 2:36Speaker 2: National Service, and as you know, you're not allowed to
- 2:38Speaker 2: do any side hustles or business during national service. So,
- 2:41Speaker 2: I got caught and I had to give it up
- 2:43Speaker 2: for five months. So, during that 5 months, I was
- 2:46Speaker 2: experimenting with my equipment and I realized, hey, you can
- 2:49Speaker 2: actually siphon rainwater to wash off all the dirt off
- 2:53Speaker 2: your driveway. By then I realized there's not enough water,
- 2:56Speaker 2: but it's just enough.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Enough to make a sloppy Merry Christmas greeting and that
- 3:00Speaker 2: was my first ever power washing ad. So I figured, hey,
- 3:04Speaker 2: it's actually quite fun. Let's do more and more and
- 3:06Speaker 2: leave it there, not wash it off after the seasons,
- 3:10Speaker 2: and here we are today, yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I mean that that honestly sounds like such an organic
- 3:15Speaker 1: way of discovering this, but do you know if power
- 3:17Speaker 1: washing is a thing overseas? Like is it a big thing?
- 3:20Speaker 2: Oh yes, absolutely. It's very common in the US for teens.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yeah. So, so since that video of you doing the,
- 3:32Speaker 1: I forgot.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It was over the MRT pavement and then the police
- 3:37Speaker 1: were called down. They said, actually there's nothing wrong here,
- 3:39Speaker 1: you know, keep up the good work and all that.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I'm just paraphrasing, by the way, but, but people still
- 3:43Speaker 1: complain here and there. But you now have members of
- 3:46Speaker 1: parliament saying, Hey, come to my area, come to my area.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Have you been busy? Are you overworked? Are you busy?
- 3:52Speaker 1: Are you busy, my friend.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Because you're only what, you're only 24, right? Or
- 3:58Speaker 2: 25 this year and I'm a solo print, so I
- 4:01Speaker 2: run everything. I'm the artist, I'm the social media manager,
- 4:04Speaker 2: video editor, invoice, finance. Yeah, I must say, um, the
- 4:11Speaker 2: month of the whole saga, it has been quite overwhelming,
- 4:15Speaker 2: but I'm managing quite well because I still have to
- 4:18Speaker 2: balance my triathlon training.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Ah, communicating with different parties and then also settling the
- 4:25Speaker 2: commissions here and there. So it has been challenging, no doubt,
- 4:28Speaker 2: but uh, yeah, very fruitful.
- 4:30Speaker 1: How
- 4:30Speaker 1: do you then conceptualize your artwork now for different areas
- 4:34Speaker 1: or even, you know, something that inspires you? What comes
- 4:37Speaker 1: to mind and how do you decide to do it?
- 4:39Speaker 1: Do you draw on a piece of paper?
- 4:43Speaker 2: So many people will be surprised, but I actually don't
- 4:46Speaker 2: have an art background. I used to hate art growing
- 4:50Speaker 2: up
- 4:54Speaker 1: I was more of a I should buy a power washer.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I am.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I was more of a science and sports person growing up.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I still play sports. I run marathons like Joakim and
- 5:06Speaker 2: ah I do triathlons. Yeah, but it's very interesting how
- 5:10Speaker 2: life takes you and uh yeah, I'm just along for
- 5:15Speaker 2: the ride and this is part of the journey, yeah. So,
- 5:26Speaker 1: what did your family have to say about that? I'm
- 5:28Speaker 1: sure they must have been, huh?
- 5:30Speaker 1: That's interesting. Like, what was their reaction when you told them?
- 5:34Speaker 1: Or when, when all the news popped off
- 5:37Speaker 2: when, when I first started, obviously their initial reaction was
- 5:41Speaker 2: crazy because they originally thought what I was doing was
- 5:45Speaker 2: vandalism or could get me in trouble, but as I
- 5:49Speaker 2: started getting more media features and I started getting more
- 5:52Speaker 2: serious clients, that's where they showed a little bit more support.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah, this
- 5:56Speaker 1: is very uh very Asian actually. I think our parents
- 5:59Speaker 1: react the same way, to be honest it's a very
- 6:03Speaker 1: unique talent.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It's like, it's not like graffiti spray paint. It isn't.
- 6:07Speaker 1: You're literally using a power washer to which he actually
- 6:08Speaker 1: brought it into the studio today. I know, I see it. OK,
- 6:12Speaker 1: we're gonna take a very short break right now and
- 6:14Speaker 1: in just a bit, you're gonna really show us and
- 6:17Speaker 1: explain to us how it works on air and also
- 6:19Speaker 1: on TikTok Live. To our TikTok Live audience, we understand
- 6:21Speaker 1: there's a bit of um echo in the audio. We're
- 6:23Speaker 1: fixing that right now. Sonia and Joakim here with you
- 6:26Speaker 1: and we are still with power washer Marcus. Yes, that
- 6:30Speaker 1: power washing guy that you've seen on Tik.
- 6:32Speaker 1: and on Instagram reels as well. We've got some comments
- 6:34Speaker 1: coming through on TikTok now actually. People saying, I tried
- 6:37Speaker 1: power washing before and they call it jet spray sometimes.
- 6:41Speaker 1: It's very hard to manage and handle. Kudos to Marcus. OK,
- 6:45Speaker 1: so Marcus, I'm gonna play now as a client, OK?
- 6:48Speaker 1: I commissioned you to do an artwork for me using
- 6:51Speaker 1: the power washing technique that you do. Walk us through
- 6:56Speaker 1: your entire planning process before you actually do the power
- 6:57Speaker 1: washing itself.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Um, so I would normally go on a call with
- 7:03Speaker 2: you and I get to find out more about your brand,
- 7:05Speaker 2: what you do, and what you envision this campaign to be,
- 7:09Speaker 2: and then thereafter we'll organize a site recky where I
- 7:12Speaker 2: will have a second meeting with you, you know, talk
- 7:15Speaker 2: things through again, uh, maybe re-emphasize a few things, answer
- 7:18Speaker 2: any queries, and also look at the site itself, whether
- 7:20Speaker 2: it's suitable. Thereafter we will.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Uh, you can relax. I will be on my iPad,
- 7:26Speaker 2: you know, designing and conceptualizing, and then I'll propose to you.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Then we'll go back and forth. And once we have
- 7:32Speaker 2: finalized the design, we schedule a date and it's power
- 7:35Speaker 2: washing time.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I mean, it sounds so straightforward.
- 7:39Speaker 1: OK, it's a bit of a new question. You say
- 7:41Speaker 1: you design on the iPad, right? But then in real life,
- 7:44Speaker 1: it'll be a different size, different measurements and all that.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Have you ever, have you ever messed up the measurements
- 7:51Speaker 1: by accident in real life and you went, oh no,
- 7:53Speaker 1: and to do it all over again.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. Um, I have not necessarily messed up the
- 7:58Speaker 2: measurements because that's the sketching process and it's easy to
- 8:01Speaker 2: rectify with chalk. But during the power washing process, I
- 8:05Speaker 2: have made mistakes for clients and I have to tell
- 8:09Speaker 2: them I'm sorry I made this mistake, but this is
- 8:11Speaker 2: the best that I could rectify it.
- 8:15Speaker 1: So you would never start from
- 8:15Speaker 1: scratch. You would just try and make some edits.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Yes, that's correct.
- 8:20Speaker 1: OK. I mean, OK, if you could be flown anywhere
- 8:24Speaker 1: in the world to do a piece of art or
- 8:26Speaker 1: you're commissioned to go somewhere, do it, someone from overseas
- 8:29Speaker 1: calls you, is there an ideal place that you could
- 8:32Speaker 1: envision yourself doing this artwork at?
- 8:36Speaker 1: Well, the silence is real.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Um, not in particular, but, uh, I think one of
- 8:43Speaker 2: my goals is to grow my social media account to match, uh,
- 8:47Speaker 2: one of the other artists who is also using this
- 8:49Speaker 2: medium as well. So he's from Texas and he runs
- 8:54Speaker 2: this social media account called Power Washing Art Official. So
- 8:57Speaker 2: he has about I think 60K followers. So my goal
- 9:00Speaker 2: is to potentially match him, overtake him.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And then I'll fly to Texas and we can potentially.
- 9:07Speaker 2: That would be great.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you're definitely getting the views, just people
- 9:11Speaker 1: are going to click follow and all that. What is
- 9:13Speaker 1: your dream collab here in Singapore? Any, any brand or
- 9:17Speaker 1: an organization or a building you want to work with?
- 9:20Speaker 1: Is there one? Or have you already done it with
- 9:22Speaker 1: you cannot say notable
- 9:25Speaker 1: clients.
- 9:27Speaker 2: I will say I did sign a few NDAs and
- 9:30Speaker 2: brand deals, um, but I would love to have free
- 9:35Speaker 2: access to end parks because I think N Parks has
- 9:37Speaker 2: a lot of, uh, long stretches of wide concrete walkways
- 9:42Speaker 2: that are underutilized. Yeah, absolutely, and I think people would
- 9:46Speaker 2: enjoy some art on their walks, on their runs. Yeah,
- 9:50Speaker 2: so I have had, um,
- 9:53Speaker 2: Done artworks over there before, unsanctioned and got stopped as well,
- 9:57Speaker 2: but they were very kind about it and they did
- 9:59Speaker 2: tell me that, hey, in the future you need to
- 10:02Speaker 2: write in a proposal and yeah, so never mind, we'll
- 10:05Speaker 2: play by their rules, but let's see whether
- 10:09Speaker 2: They can accommodate the, yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I mean, it brings some joy and cheer to people's
- 10:13Speaker 1: lives in a way, right? Makes you smile. OK, before
- 10:16Speaker 1: we let you go, you actually brought your equipment here.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Can you just show us real quick like on TikTok
- 10:21Speaker 1: Live and describe it to us for our on-air audience
- 10:23Speaker 1: as well, because he brought this through security today.
- 10:27Speaker 1: It's clear, green lit. Yeah. OK, please tell us, explain
- 10:30Speaker 1: how it works.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Yeah, so this is the power washing, um, I hope
- 10:34Speaker 2: this is not a censored word, but this is the gun.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I like to call it the magic wand.
- 10:39Speaker 1: the magic happens.
- 10:42Speaker 1: OK.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Yeah, the wand. So, uh, this is the nozzle that
- 10:47Speaker 2: I use to spray the water and, uh, yeah, this
- 10:50Speaker 2: is where the most skilled up
- 10:51Speaker 1: to TikTok audience. This
- 10:54Speaker 2: is where.
- 10:55Speaker 2: The magic happens.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So I can see that it's pretty narrow
- 11:00Speaker 1: towards the end. Are there different measurements for the nozzle
- 11:04Speaker 1: for you to switch out or something? Oh yeah, yeah.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so the one you're looking at is this one.
- 11:13Speaker 2: This is a 0 degrees tip. So think of it
- 11:15Speaker 2: as a ballpoint pen. I do have another one which
- 11:18Speaker 2: is a 15 degrees, that's like a highlighter pen.
- 11:22Speaker 2: more dirt. Yeah, so I mainly use this to.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Where can you buy these things here in Singapore you
- 11:27Speaker 1: buy online?
- 11:29Speaker 2: I bought mine at Alibaba. OK.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Do people use this to wash cars? I mean, I
- 11:36Speaker 1: don't even know, to be honest. I less powerful. OK, OK.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Someone here is asking, do you do wedding live power washing?
- 11:45Speaker 1: Have you done it for anyone's wedding yet?
- 11:48Speaker 2: No, no, I have not, but I will say this.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I've had a client who wants to do some sort
- 11:53Speaker 2: of like a magic, I'm sorry, uh, wedding proposal with Paula,
- 11:57Speaker 1: like, will you
- 11:58Speaker 1: marry me? Oh, you're so cute. OK. Did you accept
- 12:02Speaker 1: the proposal? We're
- 12:03Speaker 2: in the midst of discussing.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I cannot wait for that video. OK, so before we
- 12:08Speaker 1: wrap it up for our live on-air audience, please tell
- 12:11Speaker 1: them where they can find you and your works.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Yeah, so I, my goal is to spawn a heart
- 12:17Speaker 2: in every GRC and SMC in Singapore. So hopefully you'll
- 12:20Speaker 2: bump into me in the future. You can find all
- 12:22Speaker 2: my works on Instagram at gazing.pw.
- 12:26Speaker 1: There you go.
- 12:26Speaker 1: OK, got you. Yeah, we're still live on TikTok right now.
- 12:29Speaker 1: We wish you all the best and uh here's hoping
- 12:32Speaker 1: that we can follow your journey and see all your
- 12:34Speaker 1: other cool stuff that you're gonna do. So we're manifesting
- 12:36Speaker 1: like a really good business for you in 2026. Let's
- 12:39Speaker 1: do it.
