- 0:21Speaker 2: episode is no different. We have folks from Ohio, Indiana,
- 0:23Speaker 2: and Oklahoma telling us what they've been seeing and a
- 0:26Speaker 2: couple big buck stories that I hope you guys enjoy.

- 0:37Speaker 2: We're gonna go ahead and kick things off with Kyle
- 0:39Speaker 2: in Ohio. Here we go, all right, First up on
- 0:47Speaker 2: the line, we have Kyle, who just shot a big
- 0:50Speaker 2: buck in Ohio. Late season down to the end of
- 0:54Speaker 2: twenty five. We're getting very very close. How does it feel.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Oh man, it feels great. Honestly, I hunted this deer.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I you know, I hear people say grind all the time,
- 1:08Speaker 3: and I kind of hate that because, like it's not
- 1:11Speaker 3: a job, Like I hate going to my job and grind,
- 1:15Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, Like this is fun. Like
- 1:18Speaker 3: I get the like it's just a metaphor or whatever.
- 1:20Speaker 3: But I mean I didn't really grind. Honestly, I only
- 1:24Speaker 3: hunted him like four times. I just I had to
- 1:26Speaker 3: pick and choose when I could.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Go in there.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and so when so you hundred four times, what
- 1:32Speaker 2: were the reasons, you know, the three previous times, like
- 1:35Speaker 2: kind of broadstroke, what was the reason You're like, Okay,
- 1:38Speaker 2: I'm gonna go take a swing? And it was like
- 1:40Speaker 2: one in October or November December. I kind of what
- 1:42Speaker 2: that looked like.
- 1:43Speaker 3: So it was two in October, and it was just
- 1:46Speaker 3: a year. It was prior history with the deer last
- 1:50Speaker 3: year on days that he uh daylighted and I was wrong.
- 1:55Speaker 3: I had so I had to get a sitter and
- 1:58Speaker 3: I had to either pick he daylighted on the eighteenth,
- 2:01Speaker 3: So I either had to pick the seventeenth or the
- 2:05Speaker 3: nineteenth to hunt or the eighteenth, and I picked the eighteenth,
- 2:08Speaker 3: and he was there on the seventeenth, and then I
- 2:11Speaker 3: was like, okay, he showed up again prior on Halloween,
- 2:16Speaker 3: so I was like, okay, I got a hunt. The
- 2:18Speaker 3: thirtieth was a Sunday. I think somewhere around there was
- 2:22Speaker 3: a Sunday. I was like, I'm gonna throw in that Sunday.
- 2:24Speaker 3: He didn't show up, showed up the next day, okay,
- 2:27Speaker 3: of course, and.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Then I hunted him.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I was like, you know what, no pictures really of
- 2:34Speaker 3: him in November or since that Halloween and then and
- 2:39Speaker 3: even the Halloween was one o'clock in the morning, so
- 2:42Speaker 3: it wasn't like he was daylight.
- 2:44Speaker 4: I was like, well, it's the rout. Anything can happen.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I just went sat there on November fifth, and then
- 2:50Speaker 3: I've just been waiting ever since.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Well, so I think that's interesting that the historical data
- 2:57Speaker 2: was pretty close to right. Yeah, Like, which is you know,
- 3:01Speaker 2: something for everyone to consider this year. Obviously you were
- 3:04Speaker 2: able to catch up with them late season, and we've
- 3:06Speaker 2: had awesome I mean every week I've been saying that
- 3:08Speaker 2: we've had you know, really strong, you know, late season
- 3:11Speaker 2: weather in December obviously it's a little bit warmer right now.
- 3:16Speaker 2: The day you stroke struck this buck, what was your
- 3:20Speaker 2: level of confidence and why were you potentially confident?
- 3:24Speaker 3: I was probably like I didn't want to oversell myself,
- 3:28Speaker 3: but I was probably internally I knew it was gonna
- 3:31Speaker 3: get a chance at him that this past Tuesday, just
- 3:35Speaker 3: because one, he was there last week a week ago,
- 3:40Speaker 3: same day Tuesday, we had shitty weather, like bad low
- 3:47Speaker 3: pressure Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Tuesday came last week we had
- 3:51Speaker 3: high pressure, nice sunny, cold day and he was there
- 3:55Speaker 3: early three point thirty and I was like, well, same
- 3:58Speaker 3: thing's going on, same thing. I was like, I'm gonna
- 4:00Speaker 3: get in there nice and early. And he showed up
- 4:04Speaker 3: right on time, four o'clock. That's super cool. What where
- 4:08Speaker 3: are you hunting over?
- 4:09Speaker 2: Like a primary food source, a place where you are yeah,
- 4:11Speaker 2: going cool, I'm not gonna I mean.
- 4:14Speaker 3: We're hunt I'm in Ohio hunting small you know, suburbs
- 4:17Speaker 3: and stuff. We're hunting corn and it's I bet if
- 4:21Speaker 3: they flew drone, there's probably fifty.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Corn piles, you know.
- 4:25Speaker 3: But uh, once it starts getting real cold like this,
- 4:28Speaker 3: like I mean, I mean it's been brutal, like honestly,
- 4:31Speaker 3: like this winter just came with an abrupt fist and
- 4:34Speaker 3: was like I'm here, yeah, and uh, a lot of
- 4:37Speaker 3: guys I think just quit and he was just run down.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I mean, he looked like he lost one hundred and
- 4:43Speaker 3: twenty pounds and lost an eye and I just found
- 4:47Speaker 3: out he's got a.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Big knot on his one leg. So like, I don't
- 4:51Speaker 4: know if everyone just quit.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Feeding around me or if that's where he's been, and
- 4:54Speaker 3: like it ran out and he's like, oh, there's corn
- 4:56Speaker 3: over here, but yeah, I'm not gonna stay. Oh yeah,
- 5:00Speaker 3: I put all this time, and you know I was
- 5:01Speaker 3: just dumping corn man.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that's It's crazy what they go through in a year.
- 5:08Speaker 2: And I always wonder how many times a big buck
- 5:10Speaker 2: cheat's death. And clearly that deer probably cheated death a
- 5:13Speaker 2: handful of times, you know, from other deer and missing
- 5:16Speaker 2: an eyeball and you know, big lump on his leg.
- 5:19Speaker 2: And so last year, I'm trying to remember how frigid
- 5:24Speaker 2: December was. I don't remember it being real crazy or so.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I remember mild, really mild, honestly.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And so last year was he in there feeding in
- 5:35Speaker 1: December or so last.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Year I killed his running mate last year, and I
- 5:43Speaker 3: would have swore I was gonna kill this year. The
- 5:44Speaker 3: first day this year he was in there religiously, but
- 5:49Speaker 3: I again, acorns play a big part in it, and
- 5:51Speaker 3: it's not like I can just trump all over everyone's
- 5:55Speaker 3: private and see where acorns are dropping. You know, it's
- 5:57Speaker 3: not like it's a huge farm. So I just kind
- 6:00Speaker 3: of got to play it by year. But yeah, this
- 6:03Speaker 3: year he was I mean, dude, velvet. I got beautiful videos,
- 6:07Speaker 3: pictures all the way up him chadding bloody horned velvet.
- 6:12Speaker 4: And I'm like, I told my wife.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I was like, I'm gonna kill him the first day
- 6:16Speaker 3: and then you know he's gone.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Well, I think there's some lessons of sticking with it
- 6:23Speaker 2: and not giving up. I feel like that's that's probably
- 6:26Speaker 2: would you say that's one of the biggest pieces of
- 6:29Speaker 2: advice you can give someone for this time of years
- 6:31Speaker 2: is don't give up.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Don't don't give up one hundred percent. I could tell
- 6:35Speaker 3: another story where it was probably I don't know. When
- 6:41Speaker 3: I first moved to Ohio five years ago, I shot
- 6:44Speaker 3: under a buck. There was literally a week left in
- 6:47Speaker 3: the season. I told my wife, I'm like, screw this,
- 6:49Speaker 3: I'm done. I'm not going back out. It is what
- 6:52Speaker 3: it is. I'm terrible. I'm giving up for the year.
- 6:56Speaker 4: And she was like, you know, you should really go.
- 6:58Speaker 4: He's like trying to push.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Me to go, and I just didn't go, And I
- 7:02Speaker 3: went and pulled that camera card and that deer was
- 7:05Speaker 3: there the next three nights, an hour before dark, just
- 7:08Speaker 3: sitting there and just you can't give up this time
- 7:11Speaker 3: of year.
- 7:11Speaker 4: You just got to ride it out.
- 7:12Speaker 3: As much as it sucks hunting in this stuff. I
- 7:15Speaker 3: mean it's warm now, it's fifty five outside right now,
- 7:18Speaker 3: but I'm sure January is gonna get cold again, and
- 7:21Speaker 3: you just gotta find the food and just ride it out.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's uh, that's really I mean, this is
- 7:29Speaker 2: the truth everyone like you if you're hunting this late
- 7:32Speaker 2: in the seasons because it didn't happen yet and you're's
- 7:34Speaker 2: like to your point last year, Like, no, I suck
- 7:36Speaker 2: and I just need to hang it up.
- 7:38Speaker 1: But I think there's some pretty good advice in that.
- 7:40Speaker 2: So, like looking here, obviously, during the holidays, that might
- 7:43Speaker 2: be a super busy time for some people, it might
- 7:45Speaker 2: be a time where they might have an opportunity to
- 7:47Speaker 2: get out. Looking at the extent of forecast right now,
- 7:49Speaker 2: it looks like it's gonna you know, when this goes live,
- 7:51Speaker 2: it'll still be pretty darn mild, at least here in Illinois.
- 7:55Speaker 2: For those folks, do you have any words of advice?
- 7:58Speaker 2: Is that just maybe move cameras around and hang out
- 8:00Speaker 2: and wait for the next front, or would you have
- 8:02Speaker 2: enough conviction to go try a couple of times so
- 8:04Speaker 2: over the next seven days.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Oh man, it depends what your life situation is. Honestly,
- 8:11Speaker 3: so I have a nine month old, I have a wife.
- 8:14Speaker 3: You know, if you're single and you can you know,
- 8:17Speaker 3: kind of living the bachelor life will say, and you
- 8:21Speaker 3: can get away with hunting. I feel like, I mean,
- 8:24Speaker 3: it sounds crazy, but if you can get in with
- 8:25Speaker 3: a good wind, why not. I mean, you've already we're
- 8:29Speaker 3: two months into the season, ohios, until February first.
- 8:32Speaker 1: I mean, we're getting close to the end here.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Why not just go if you can get in and
- 8:37Speaker 4: out clean.
- 8:39Speaker 3: But to the guy like me who's got a family,
- 8:42Speaker 3: it's holidays and stuff like that where you just kind
- 8:44Speaker 3: of have to pick and shoes.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I'm probably waiting for a front.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I'm probably gonna find a deer, or if I have
- 8:52Speaker 3: a deer that's like on the edge of daylight, I'm
- 8:55Speaker 3: probably gonna wait for that next front and harmy yeah.
- 9:00Speaker 2: So with that's being said, scale one to ten, ten
- 9:02Speaker 2: being one of the best weeks of the year, one
- 9:05Speaker 2: being one of the worst weeks of the year. Next
- 9:07Speaker 2: seven days Christmas Eve Day to New Yor's Eve.
- 9:12Speaker 1: One to ten. Where do you put it, all things considered.
- 9:16Speaker 4: I could say it could be feast or famine.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I'm gonna say I would put it right in the
- 9:21Speaker 3: middle of five, because if the weather's gnarling and it's
- 9:25Speaker 3: cold and the deer like got a feed, it could
- 9:28Speaker 3: be a ten. You know, it could go fifty to fifty.
- 9:31Speaker 3: But now it's fifty five and it's gonna be rainy,
- 9:35Speaker 3: and it's just the complete opposite of what I was
- 9:38Speaker 3: hunting in, you know, on just two days ago.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, well I think that's that's fair. And then
- 9:46Speaker 2: I'll ask you one last question, brand Newborn, any tips,
- 9:50Speaker 2: any tips for the guy that is, uh, I'm not
- 9:54Speaker 2: expecting anything, so I got for everyone. It's the stage
- 9:57Speaker 2: of life for a lot of people.
- 9:59Speaker 1: No, yeah, it's it's it.
- 10:02Speaker 3: So a lot of my friends were telling me I
- 10:04Speaker 3: wasn't hunting enough. That's why I haven't killed him, and
- 10:08Speaker 3: you know, all this stuff. And granted, if I would
- 10:10Speaker 3: have hunted every day. Yeah, probably would have killed him
- 10:11Speaker 3: back in October. But now with a newborn, I gotta
- 10:15Speaker 3: get a sitter. I got to call in a favor
- 10:17Speaker 3: with my sister in law or my mother in law.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Uh.
- 10:21Speaker 4: My advice would be, man, just watch those cameras.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I know that, like people are like you kind of
- 10:28Speaker 3: have to get a pattern on a deer like rule
- 10:31Speaker 3: thumb for me. If he does something twice the third time,
- 10:34Speaker 3: I'm gonna be there. And this year was big proof
- 10:38Speaker 3: for that historical data. Man, really really like stave those
- 10:43Speaker 3: pictures from the year before. I know a lot of
- 10:45Speaker 3: guys just leave him in the app or whatever. But
- 10:48Speaker 3: I made a separate folder in my phone and I
- 10:51Speaker 3: store all those three and four year olds that maybe
- 10:53Speaker 3: in a couple of years I want to shoot for
- 10:56Speaker 3: the following next year, you can come back to that'll
- 11:00Speaker 3: save you so like then you can really plan. Okay,
- 11:03Speaker 3: I need to sit her on the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth.
- 11:06Speaker 3: I'm gonna hunt those three days and then my wife's
- 11:10Speaker 3: very understanding. Also, I don't have a ton of hobbies.
- 11:12Speaker 3: That's the other thing.
- 11:13Speaker 5: I know.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Guys that goll punt fish do all this stuff. I
- 11:16Speaker 3: pretty much just hunt.
- 11:18Speaker 1: So I like it.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Well, man, congratulations on connect with your buck here. I
- 11:23Speaker 2: hope you have an awesome, awesome Christmas. Appreciate it. And
- 11:27Speaker 2: good luck to your wife. I know she's still hunting Ohio.
- 11:29Speaker 2: And good luck if you venture out to Pennsylvania anymore.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Thanks, I appreciate it all.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Right. Next up we have Jake A. Lord with Hunters
- 11:37Speaker 2: of Vantaged podcast. Jake, how's it going?
- 11:39Speaker 6: It's going good man, Jake, thanks for having me on absolutely.
- 11:43Speaker 2: And so we were just talking earlier this month. We
- 11:46Speaker 2: were ragging about how great the winter weather was now
- 11:49Speaker 2: and mother Nature hurt us because it's gonna be a
- 11:52Speaker 2: little toasty. So you're down in Oklahoma, what do you
- 11:56Speaker 2: what have you been seeing in what's been going on
- 11:58Speaker 2: in your neck of the woods.
- 12:00Speaker 7: Yeah, so just put in a little context.
- 12:02Speaker 6: I'm in northeast Oklahoma, so I don't know, probably thirteen
- 12:06Speaker 6: minutes or thirteen thirty minutes from you know, the Kansas border.
- 12:10Speaker 6: So around here we got a lot of pasture land
- 12:12Speaker 6: and so a lot of open areas and a little
- 12:17Speaker 6: bit of timber. And so you mix that with you know,
- 12:20Speaker 6: the two week gun season that just now happened here.
- 12:22Speaker 6: You can tell that the bucks and a lot of
- 12:25Speaker 6: the deer just kind of hanging tight to the timber
- 12:28Speaker 6: and so on. Camera wise, a lot of them aren't
- 12:33Speaker 6: usually coming out in those fields or you know, trying
- 12:35Speaker 6: to hit like your I.
- 12:37Speaker 7: Guess food sources because it's open areas.
- 12:40Speaker 6: But we don't have that ag that you know a
- 12:44Speaker 6: lot of the Kansas people do have. And so we
- 12:47Speaker 6: you know, utilize corn feeders, corn piles, whether people may
- 12:50Speaker 6: like it or not. Oklahoma's debate state. So that helps
- 12:54Speaker 6: at least for the private pieces. But like I said,
- 12:57Speaker 6: with all the pressure here lately, it's kind of of
- 13:01Speaker 6: not been pulling its weight, if that makes sense.
- 13:03Speaker 1: It's been tough in other words, Yeah, it's been real tough. Yeah.
- 13:06Speaker 2: And so so we were talking beforehand before we started
- 13:09Speaker 2: recording about you know, there's two scenarios where late season
- 13:12Speaker 2: hunting can be really good. You mentioned a food or
- 13:14Speaker 2: a sanctuary, and so talk about that a little bit because.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Most people don't have that.
- 13:19Speaker 2: If we really paint the broader picture of most white
- 13:21Speaker 2: tail hunters that are listening to this, more than likely
- 13:24Speaker 2: they don't have those two things. And why are those important?
- 13:26Speaker 2: And what can someone do without them?
- 13:28Speaker 7: Yeah, kind of like I said a second ago.
- 13:30Speaker 6: It you either need good sanctuary where the deer feel
- 13:35Speaker 6: safe after a long season and all the pressure, or
- 13:38Speaker 6: you need you know, that good food source, which you
- 13:40Speaker 6: know on my private piece that I have, we don't
- 13:43Speaker 6: have that because it's a permission piece. We can't do
- 13:45Speaker 6: much altering to the land. So no food plot, it's
- 13:48Speaker 6: no late season food sources. So that's why we stick
- 13:51Speaker 6: with corn. But I mean, it's it's okay if you
- 13:54Speaker 6: don't have those. It isn't like all hoops lost. But
- 13:56Speaker 6: the thing is, instead of just having it now, you
- 13:58Speaker 6: got to go find it. So you know, like I said,
- 14:01Speaker 6: the private's kind of out of the picture if I'm
- 14:03Speaker 6: still wanting to punch my tag, And so that moves
- 14:05Speaker 6: us to public where you actually can go put boots
- 14:08Speaker 6: on the ground and find those food sources. And so
- 14:10Speaker 6: you can't bait on public here in Oklahoma, which is okay,
- 14:13Speaker 6: But what you do need is that good natural browse
- 14:17Speaker 6: the food source, and so down here that's usually like
- 14:20Speaker 6: those oaks, red oaks, stuff like that, those late dropping ones.
- 14:22Speaker 7: So that's kind of what we key in on.
- 14:24Speaker 6: And you know, not all of them are obviously the ticket,
- 14:29Speaker 6: and especially now, it seems like all the deer during
- 14:33Speaker 6: this late season they're all getting like congregated again. I
- 14:35Speaker 6: don't know if that's just because they're all grouping back
- 14:38Speaker 6: up and you know, want to say hi to each
- 14:39Speaker 6: other after a long rut, or if that's just kind
- 14:42Speaker 6: of food centralized where the food's kind of making them
- 14:44Speaker 6: congregate in all this one area. But what we've been seeing,
- 14:49Speaker 6: and I mean, maybe not so much this late season
- 14:53Speaker 6: just because like I told you, Yester, I've been kind
- 14:54Speaker 6: of getting my butt kicked. But like years past and stuff,
- 14:57Speaker 6: if you can find those really good dropping oaks, can
- 15:00Speaker 6: find the deer. So you just want those food sources
- 15:03Speaker 6: where you get a whole lot of sign with the
- 15:04Speaker 6: up be droppings tracks, whatever you call your deer sign.
- 15:09Speaker 6: That's what you want to see around those oak trees.
- 15:21Speaker 2: How challenging is it for someone uh to go find
- 15:25Speaker 2: you know, that congregation of deer?
- 15:26Speaker 1: Is it just putting on putting on miles.
- 15:29Speaker 7: It's a lot of walking. It's a lot of walking.
- 15:31Speaker 6: I mean, you could try to put cameras and just
- 15:35Speaker 6: maybe focus these, it'd be it'd be really hard to
- 15:40Speaker 6: try to I guess pattern the oaks with your cameras
- 15:43Speaker 6: to try to figure out which ones. I mean, if
- 15:45Speaker 6: you had enough cameras you might be able to, but
- 15:47Speaker 6: you you'd be checking at least ten plus different spots
- 15:50Speaker 6: or areas just try to find those those good ones.
- 15:53Speaker 6: And of course, as you know that natural brows and
- 15:55Speaker 6: acorns and stuff like that, everything's trying to hit them,
- 15:58Speaker 6: so it's like a it's like a.
- 16:00Speaker 7: Temporary thing even when you do find them.
- 16:02Speaker 6: So it's just you got to you gotta find it
- 16:04Speaker 6: when it's hot, and you got to be there, and
- 16:06Speaker 6: if not, then it's just it just makes it a
- 16:09Speaker 6: lot tougher result.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's I think a lot of people are
- 16:12Speaker 2: in that boat. If we're being honest, If you don't
- 16:15Speaker 2: have the right set up, it is, there's no doubt
- 16:17Speaker 2: about it.
- 16:17Speaker 1: It's very challenging.
- 16:19Speaker 2: And so how how hard do you think it would
- 16:20Speaker 2: be on a scale one of ten to go to
- 16:23Speaker 2: go find like two or three options for someone and
- 16:27Speaker 2: they just be honest. But I think there'll be someone
- 16:29Speaker 2: that's like, oh no, it can't be the hard, and
- 16:30Speaker 2: maybe it'll be reverse psychology to encourage someone to go
- 16:32Speaker 2: try this.
- 16:34Speaker 6: I mean if if you want me to give motivation,
- 16:36Speaker 6: then it's not going to be very hard. But if
- 16:38Speaker 6: you want me to be realistic, then it's probably gonna
- 16:40Speaker 6: be like a I don't know. I'd probably say if
- 16:42Speaker 6: ten's the hardest, it'd be about a six or seven,
- 16:45Speaker 6: Like it's going to be more.
- 16:46Speaker 7: Hard than not, like whether people want to admit it
- 16:49Speaker 7: or not.
- 16:49Speaker 6: Like, unless you have that food source of sanctuary, the
- 16:52Speaker 6: best time of the year is over. And I don't
- 16:55Speaker 6: want to put damper in people's plans, but that's just
- 16:57Speaker 6: the reality of it. And I like looking at things
- 16:59Speaker 6: of kind of how they are, and uh that way,
- 17:03Speaker 6: you know, hunting is a metal game. You know more
- 17:05Speaker 6: than I do. And uh, if your if your mindset's
- 17:09Speaker 6: not there, then it's like you're gonna have a horrible
- 17:11Speaker 6: time out there, and more than likely you're just not
- 17:13Speaker 6: even gonna strap on the boots and go. So uh,
- 17:15Speaker 6: I think having that mindset of knowing like, hey, this
- 17:19Speaker 6: is going to be tough, but if I find the ticket,
- 17:22Speaker 6: like you're gonna have a great hunt. So it will
- 17:25Speaker 6: be tough, but if you can find that care at
- 17:28Speaker 6: the end of the stick, it will be well well
- 17:30Speaker 6: worth it.
- 17:30Speaker 7: Just because you're going to see so many deer.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I might be jump with a gun here.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Uh would you say another added benefit is scown for
- 17:38Speaker 2: next year as well?
- 17:40Speaker 1: You're in there.
- 17:41Speaker 6: Yeah, that's actually what what we're doing a lot of
- 17:43Speaker 6: the time. So uh, when you are walking around looking
- 17:47Speaker 6: for those uh those good dropping oaks right now, like
- 17:50Speaker 6: that's you run into so much good sign So it
- 17:53Speaker 6: like again, it's not like you're just wasting time out
- 17:56Speaker 6: there because you are taking you know, that intel for
- 17:59Speaker 6: next year.
- 18:00Speaker 7: And so no, that is that is a really good point.
- 18:02Speaker 7: I'm glad you brought that up.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I'm trying to think here as far as
- 18:08Speaker 2: you know what you're anticipating here for the next week,
- 18:11Speaker 2: you know, Merry Christmas to everyone, and sometimes that makes
- 18:15Speaker 2: sometimes that might be one of the busiest times of
- 18:16Speaker 2: the year for some families, or maybe if they don't
- 18:19Speaker 2: have to travel for the holidays, it might they might
- 18:20Speaker 2: be able to get out there and do some of
- 18:22Speaker 2: the things that you just discussed. But looking at the
- 18:24Speaker 2: elevated temperatures for the majority of the country here, at
- 18:27Speaker 2: least on the start of it looks like there is
- 18:29Speaker 2: a front that's rolling in the later part of the week,
- 18:31Speaker 2: at least here in Illinois scale one to ten, ten
- 18:36Speaker 2: being the best week of the year, one being one
- 18:37Speaker 2: of the worst weeks of the year of twenty twenty five,
- 18:40Speaker 2: Where would you rank.
- 18:42Speaker 1: It for the next you know, seven days?
- 18:44Speaker 6: I mean, so we got Christmas obviously, so I feel
- 18:48Speaker 6: like more people are going to have that time off.
- 18:50Speaker 6: And that's kind of all it takes this time of
- 18:53Speaker 6: year is just if you have that extra time. Now granted,
- 18:55Speaker 6: obviously spend that with families, spend that with friends, but
- 18:58Speaker 6: if you have that time off, it can be really good.
- 19:01Speaker 6: Like I have a buddy here. His name's Cooper Hill.
- 19:05Speaker 6: He is the late season dude, and that's exactly the
- 19:09Speaker 6: strategy he does. He shot so Oklahoma season ends. I
- 19:12Speaker 6: know we're not all the way there yet, but it
- 19:14Speaker 6: ends January fourteenth or fifteenth, and he killed a super
- 19:18Speaker 6: nice bock on public doing that Oak strategy on January fourteenth,
- 19:23Speaker 6: and he said he's seen more bucks on those couple
- 19:25Speaker 6: sits than he has the whole entire the whole entirety
- 19:28Speaker 6: of the year.
- 19:29Speaker 7: So not all hope is lost.
- 19:30Speaker 6: It is just tougher to find those spots, but when
- 19:33Speaker 6: you do, it will pay off, So okay.
- 19:36Speaker 7: To wrap that up, sorry, a number. Wise I would
- 19:39Speaker 7: probably give it.
- 19:41Speaker 6: I'd probably still give it like a six, but I'm
- 19:44Speaker 6: going to say like a seven just because it's going
- 19:46Speaker 6: to be harder to find, like I said, but when you.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Do, it's good. I like it.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Well hopefully you know. I still feel to your point.
- 19:54Speaker 2: You know, depending on where you're what state you're in,
- 19:56Speaker 2: you know seasons, you know it's not over here just
- 19:58Speaker 2: because the calendar switches a twenty six, oh for sure,
- 20:01Speaker 2: and so and also next year we'll be here before
- 20:04Speaker 2: we know too, like believe it or not, knock on wood, dear.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Season happens every year.
- 20:08Speaker 2: So if you can still learn something that helps you
- 20:10Speaker 2: the next year, I think that's a really great piece
- 20:12Speaker 2: of advice.
- 20:13Speaker 6: Anything else here, Jake before we wrap it up, No, nope,
- 20:16Speaker 6: I just appreciate you having me on, Jake.
- 20:18Speaker 7: It's always good to sit down and talk some deer
- 20:20Speaker 7: hunting with you.
- 20:20Speaker 2: So if people want to go and listen to your guys'
- 20:23Speaker 2: podcast too, where is the best place to do that
- 20:26Speaker 2: and what are you guys covering?
- 20:28Speaker 6: Yeah, so it's me and my buddy Christian Babcock. You
- 20:31Speaker 6: can find us on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcast.
- 20:35Speaker 7: It's just hundredsdvantage on all those things.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Awesome, Thank you so much, good luck the rest of
- 20:39Speaker 2: the season. Merry Christmas. Hope you have a Grete twenty six. Thanks,
- 20:42Speaker 2: shake you too, all right. Next up on the line
- 20:44Speaker 2: we have Tommy Dickerson. Tommy has helped out on the
- 20:46Speaker 2: white Tail podcast this past year, and you've had a
- 20:49Speaker 2: really exciting season and most recently you shot a buck
- 20:53Speaker 2: in Indiana.
- 20:54Speaker 1: How does it feel feels good?
- 20:56Speaker 2: Jake?
- 20:56Speaker 5: It feels really good, all right, any of it's a
- 21:00Speaker 5: fun state to get after it in different gun seasons
- 21:02Speaker 5: in Ohio where I'm from, Bordon Raids, So it's really
- 21:06Speaker 5: nice to.
- 21:06Speaker 8: Be able to hop over there and get some gun
- 21:08Speaker 8: hunting in.
- 21:09Speaker 5: Essentially, I can home with a gun vow whenever I want,
- 21:12Speaker 5: you know, after November.
- 21:13Speaker 8: Fifteenth, or whenever their season comes in. So it's pretty exciting.
- 21:16Speaker 8: Love hopping the border and be able to do that.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Yeah, So tell me a little bit about your planing
- 21:21Speaker 2: here to hop over to Indiana. Was the weather related,
- 21:25Speaker 2: intel related? Or you had some free time and you
- 21:27Speaker 2: wanted to go.
- 21:29Speaker 5: So all my late season hunting is targeted around the weather.
- 21:34Speaker 8: I won't go out if I don't think that there's
- 21:36Speaker 8: gonna be any decent weather. So that's a big temperature change.
- 21:40Speaker 8: This buck showed up late in the year.
- 21:42Speaker 5: I didn't even know he really existed, and I found
- 21:45Speaker 5: him just because I was going to take down all
- 21:48Speaker 5: the cameras on this farm and take.
- 21:50Speaker 8: Them to Ohio and put them on our farm.
- 21:52Speaker 5: And I just walked in Detember just when I was
- 21:55Speaker 5: pulling the cameras and saw a bunch of sign and
- 21:57Speaker 5: realized that, hey, there's actually a buck using this. So
- 22:00Speaker 5: got in there and got some new cameras out, found
- 22:04Speaker 5: the buck, and then waited for a temperature change.
- 22:06Speaker 8: Last week we had a big temperature drop, as in.
- 22:09Speaker 5: The negatives chased them around and couldn't make it happen.
- 22:13Speaker 5: And I saw a temptature drop on Friday and went
- 22:16Speaker 5: in there and saw them.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 22:19Speaker 2: And so tell tell me a little bit about the
- 22:21Speaker 2: sign that made you stick around, right, because I think
- 22:23Speaker 2: there's some some good advice there for really anyone for
- 22:26Speaker 2: the remainder of the season. Like I feel, you got
- 22:30Speaker 2: to keep staying nimble and if you're not on something,
- 22:32Speaker 2: maybe try to go find something. And that's kind of
- 22:34Speaker 2: what happened for you, What was the sign they got
- 22:36Speaker 2: you excited was a rub scrapes, just a bunch of tracks.
- 22:41Speaker 5: So there were there's scrapes that were ahead and also
- 22:44Speaker 5: there's deer beds, but they were single beds. They were
- 22:48Speaker 5: I wasn't finding them, you know, right right next.
- 22:51Speaker 8: To each other, like it was dozed betting. It was
- 22:53Speaker 8: more there spread out.
- 22:54Speaker 5: There'd at least be a couple of hundred yards between
- 22:56Speaker 5: beds and just the thick, nasty part of this farm.
- 23:00Speaker 5: And so I kind of figured at that point that.
- 23:03Speaker 8: There was a buck in there.
- 23:04Speaker 5: There were there's multiple bucks into the age class of them.
- 23:08Speaker 8: Once I once I got those cameras.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Out, then after I found that signed it took twenty
- 23:13Speaker 5: four hours when I found the dear. So after that
- 23:15Speaker 5: it was you know, just out of the small little
- 23:18Speaker 5: shift and my mindset of how to hunt the farm
- 23:21Speaker 5: and where the deer were enabled.
- 23:24Speaker 8: Me to connect with the buck. So that was pretty
- 23:27Speaker 8: exciting to find.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and so shows up on camera and then you
- 23:32Speaker 2: look at the weather temperature drop.
- 23:34Speaker 1: What was your setup like?
- 23:35Speaker 2: Was he was he headed a cut cornfield, bean field,
- 23:38Speaker 2: alfalfa acorns.
- 23:40Speaker 1: What was kind of his feeding pattern.
- 23:42Speaker 8: So he he was in he was feeding cut corn,
- 23:45Speaker 8: and so on this form the former used.
- 23:48Speaker 5: I think he's a hobby former, and so he has
- 23:50Speaker 5: all the older equipment and he doesn't kill the corn
- 23:52Speaker 5: under which is cute, especially in the late season. So
- 23:56Speaker 5: since he used the older equipment, it's not as it's
- 23:59Speaker 5: not as great picking up the corn when they're cutting it.
- 24:02Speaker 5: So there's a lot of corn that gets left. And
- 24:04Speaker 5: then when he doesn't till it under all that corn
- 24:06Speaker 5: stays out.
- 24:06Speaker 8: And so that's why I think he's here.
- 24:08Speaker 5: We're targeting this field that I had the ability to hunt.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Yeah.
- 24:13Speaker 2: That old equipment is becoming a thing of the past
- 24:18Speaker 2: of farm country across the country, so that that's uh,
- 24:22Speaker 2: that's a really big benefit to have.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Basically a lot of food that gets left over.
- 24:28Speaker 5: Yeah for sure, I wish, I wish, honest they had
- 24:32Speaker 5: the the make the equipment drop more corn just to
- 24:36Speaker 5: help the g out across the states, are you know,
- 24:39Speaker 5: across him his west.
- 24:40Speaker 8: I think we got bigger here just in general.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no for sure. And so.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Over the cut cornfield this, how many deer did you
- 24:49Speaker 2: see that evening?
- 24:49Speaker 1: Was? It?
- 24:50Speaker 8: Was?
- 24:50Speaker 1: It a full house was it was he the last
- 24:52Speaker 1: buck to come out? What what was that like? Uh?
- 24:54Speaker 5: So I sold five that came out into the field
- 24:57Speaker 5: and then where I can see up into the woods
- 25:01Speaker 5: and this woods needs some serious ts. I work real open,
- 25:05Speaker 5: and I saw some deer up in there as well.
- 25:09Speaker 8: But in the field, five different bucks came out.
- 25:11Speaker 5: Didn't see it though, which was pretty interesting to see
- 25:14Speaker 5: that they were all grouping together, especially from the sign
- 25:16Speaker 5: that I found saying that they weren't bedding together. I
- 25:19Speaker 5: think when I found those beds, it was still November,
- 25:23Speaker 5: and I think I killed it here on the nineteenth,
- 25:25Speaker 5: so I think at that point in the season they
- 25:27Speaker 5: probably all started to clump together a little bit more,
- 25:29Speaker 5: which was pretty beneficial. It's kind of cool to see,
- 25:32Speaker 5: like it almost was like a bachelor group where these
- 25:34Speaker 5: bucks were living together, but he was clearly the oldest,
- 25:37Speaker 5: and then there's a couple of two year olds and
- 25:39Speaker 5: then a couple of our.
- 25:41Speaker 8: Year half shields as well.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and so yeah, that's that's really awesome, man.
- 25:46Speaker 2: And I think for anyone out there, reshuffle those cameras
- 25:50Speaker 2: or find find the hobby farm corn field, or find
- 25:53Speaker 2: find the food for sure, and so kind of looking
- 25:56Speaker 2: here for the for the near future, I mean temperatures
- 25:59Speaker 2: here for warmed up just a little bit, and then
- 26:02Speaker 2: you know, looking at the extended forecast, it looks like,
- 26:05Speaker 2: you know, when this goes live, it's going to be
- 26:06Speaker 2: pretty warm, but there is another cold front.
- 26:08Speaker 1: So for folks that are hopefully.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Going to get you know, maybe a little bit of
- 26:12Speaker 2: time over the holiday, maybe they don't have as much
- 26:15Speaker 2: commitments and they're going to be able to sneak out
- 26:17Speaker 2: for a couple of evenings, what would you tell those folks?
- 26:21Speaker 5: So what I would tell them is if you have
- 26:24Speaker 5: green resources while it's warm, and you have the ability
- 26:26Speaker 5: to hunt. You know a lot of people do get
- 26:28Speaker 5: those couple of days off of the family and they
- 26:30Speaker 5: have access to you know.
- 26:31Speaker 8: Different properties hunt. I would key and on group any
- 26:34Speaker 8: kind of green food source for when it's warmer, and.
- 26:36Speaker 5: Then once that tendency drop does hit, I would get
- 26:40Speaker 5: back on the ag.
- 26:41Speaker 8: If you have skating corn, stay and beans.
- 26:44Speaker 5: Cut corn, whatever it is, I would get onto that
- 26:47Speaker 5: ag as soon as you can for that cold product
- 26:49Speaker 5: because they are going to be coming for it, especially
- 26:52Speaker 5: when you've got a long period of you know, it's.
- 26:54Speaker 8: Real warm and then cuts down the real cold they're
- 26:56Speaker 8: going to hit.
- 26:57Speaker 1: The ad mm hmm.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks like, you know, for that next week
- 27:01Speaker 2: is going to be warm, so hunt the greens on
- 27:03Speaker 2: the on the front part of that. And then it
- 27:05Speaker 2: looks like temperatures they're not going to be frigid, frigid
- 27:07Speaker 2: or as cold as what it has been earlier in
- 27:09Speaker 2: this month of December, but there's still going to be
- 27:11Speaker 2: a drop And so I think that's that's some really
- 27:14Speaker 2: good advice.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Are you Are you.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Throwing any morning hunts out this time? I know people
- 27:18Speaker 2: it's almost like that's a tongue in cheek question, but
- 27:21Speaker 2: there might be some people that have time they're like, well,
- 27:23Speaker 2: I'm gonna go out and throw a morning hunt. Where
- 27:25Speaker 2: where do you stand on this?
- 27:26Speaker 5: So I do believe that there you can't fully x like,
- 27:31Speaker 5: you can't just cross it out of your strategy, right.
- 27:34Speaker 8: I think that that'd be a bad.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Approach to hunting as a whole, is just to exit
- 27:38Speaker 5: anything out of the strategy because of a certain time
- 27:40Speaker 5: of year. But obviously the evenings are significantly better for
- 27:47Speaker 5: access reasons and also getting them out in front of daylight.
- 27:50Speaker 5: But if you're able to run elcams. Sometimes if you
- 27:54Speaker 5: have a buck on a pattern, you can figure out.
- 27:56Speaker 5: So let's say he comes out right after dark and
- 27:59Speaker 5: then he might you know, or right after dark until
- 28:02Speaker 5: eleven o'clock at night.
- 28:04Speaker 8: Team might come out.
- 28:05Speaker 5: Late in the morning, especially during a cool front, onto.
- 28:08Speaker 8: That food and so you can get in there without.
- 28:11Speaker 5: Pumping all the deer off the food source, then you
- 28:13Speaker 5: probably will have a pretty decent hunt. But mature bucks
- 28:17Speaker 5: nine ninety five percent of the time, like you want
- 28:21Speaker 5: to be in any nay, just because if you bump
- 28:23Speaker 5: the doze off in the smaller box, like he's going
- 28:25Speaker 5: to notice that and it's not going to happen for you.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to circle back to I know a
- 28:32Speaker 2: part of Ohio that you hunt.
- 28:34Speaker 1: You know there was EHD.
- 28:36Speaker 2: I know that that's a very serious thing for a
- 28:37Speaker 2: lot of people, you know, in many pockets of the country,
- 28:40Speaker 2: but obviously Ohio got the most attention this year for
- 28:43Speaker 2: just the amount of carnage that quite frankly happened. What
- 28:47Speaker 2: have you been seen or maybe what you have not
- 28:50Speaker 2: been seen on cameras here uh in Ohio? And I
- 28:53Speaker 2: guess kind of like your boots on the ground report
- 28:55Speaker 2: regarding that.
- 28:57Speaker 5: So on my Ohio farm, Western Ohio, we did not
- 29:00Speaker 5: get hit with the AHD at all, which is pretty incredible.
- 29:04Speaker 8: But where I go to school in Athens, after Ohio,
- 29:08Speaker 8: Southeast Ohio.
- 29:09Speaker 5: Right in the central essentially of where EAHD hit hard,
- 29:13Speaker 5: it's been tough talking to different hunters. There's a lot
- 29:16Speaker 5: of people that are say they're not saying year that they.
- 29:20Speaker 8: They're struggling.
- 29:22Speaker 5: But I think this time of year, if you're in
- 29:25Speaker 5: an area they got hit with the HD hard the year,
- 29:28Speaker 5: are going to group together because this naturally essentially that's
- 29:31Speaker 5: what they do when they're food. So if you this
- 29:34Speaker 5: might be the best time of year if you did
- 29:36Speaker 5: have an HD break or outbreak to find a food
- 29:40Speaker 5: source and get a big buck killed, because that that
- 29:42Speaker 5: big buck is going to keen on the whatever primary
- 29:45Speaker 5: food sources in.
- 29:46Speaker 8: His region and he's going to be in.
- 29:48Speaker 1: There no matter what. Yeah.
- 29:51Speaker 2: No, I think that's uh, that's great advice, And I
- 29:55Speaker 2: think it'll be a great inventory to you to see
- 29:57Speaker 2: what survivors made it through and maybe what nextra my
- 30:00Speaker 2: look like too, because I mean, I think for a
- 30:01Speaker 2: lot of hunters too, next season's already started right now.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Too.
- 30:05Speaker 2: I know season is still open for the majority of
- 30:07Speaker 2: the country, but for a lot of folks they're already
- 30:10Speaker 2: thinking about next year, which I think is a totally
- 30:11Speaker 2: healthy thing to do and a holistic thing to look at,
- 30:16Speaker 2: and so I think that's good intel, just to see
- 30:18Speaker 2: what maybe made it through.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Now looking at the.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Weather here, Christmas time somewhat decent weather scale one to ten,
- 30:26Speaker 2: ten being one of the best weeks of the year,
- 30:28Speaker 2: one being one of the worst weeks of the year.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Where do you put the last seven days of twenty
- 30:32Speaker 2: and twenty five according to your intel, insight and gut feeling.
- 30:39Speaker 5: I even though there is a big tempt to drop,
- 30:42Speaker 5: I don't think it's going to be a killer time
- 30:45Speaker 5: to be in the woods.
- 30:46Speaker 8: Especially when there's no snow. We're all hoping for a
