- 0:40Speaker 1: about it. We'll be back in January with brand new episodes. Bye, hey, everybody,
- 0:57Speaker 1: welcome to Girls Gone Hamewark a bonus episode of Long Story.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Sure at the podcast, I'm Megan, I'm Wendy, and today
- 1:03Speaker 1: we're discussing a Second Chance at Love, the very first
- 1:06Speaker 1: movie in Hallmarks Spring Into Love series for twenty twenty two.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Wanted to welcome all of our new listeners. Girls Gone
- 1:13Speaker 1: Hallmark is what we call our weekly bonus Hallmark review episodes,
- 1:18Speaker 1: but we're not just Hallmark reviewers. Every Tuesday we put
- 1:21Speaker 1: out a new podcast episode where we chat about life
- 1:25Speaker 1: and the things we love. And this week's episode was
- 1:27Speaker 1: all about our favorite cleaning hack schedules and strategies. And
- 1:31Speaker 1: if you don't think that sounds like a good time,
- 1:33Speaker 1: then I don't know what to say to you. Plus,
- 1:36Speaker 1: we also send a few minutes at the top of
- 1:38Speaker 1: each episode checking in with each other, and we close
- 1:41Speaker 1: each episode with an approved item something we're loving. It's
- 1:44Speaker 1: a good time. We'd love it if you would check
- 1:46Speaker 1: those out if you are a Hallmark only listener. Wenday, Yo,
- 1:52Speaker 1: it's time for a second chance at love? Yeah, do
- 1:55Speaker 1: you have a synopsis? We do? Are you ready? Alicia
- 1:59Speaker 1: and our Arnold. His name's not Arnold, is it Arnold? Yeah?
- 2:03Speaker 1: I wrote in my notes Arnold, Arthur, and August. I
- 2:08Speaker 1: don't know what is going on with me, so you
- 2:10Speaker 1: will probably hear me refer to him as Arthur later
- 2:14Speaker 1: on because in my notes anyway, Okay, well, I'm starting
- 2:16Speaker 1: over the synopsis. Alicia and Arnold's marriage is picture perfect,
- 2:22Speaker 1: picture perfect. However, Arnold is ready to grow their family,
- 2:25Speaker 1: but Alicia is hesitant to the idea. Rather than facing
- 2:29Speaker 1: the problem, Alicia sets her divorced parents each up on
- 2:33Speaker 1: a blind date dating app. This synopsis is not a
- 2:38Speaker 1: true reflection of this movie. I don't think. Oh agree,
- 2:41Speaker 1: I mean, those things happen, but it should read something
- 2:46Speaker 1: like Brenda and Jack reconnect after years of doors. I
- 2:53Speaker 1: don't know something, yes, while Alicia struggles to find independence
- 2:59Speaker 1: from her parents exactly now. When we recorded our spring preview,
- 3:08Speaker 1: we thought, now, correct me if I'm wrong. We thought
- 3:11Speaker 1: this movie was going to be more heavily focused on
- 3:16Speaker 1: Arnold and Alisha. I agree, and I think we were wrong.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Well that's in fact my first impression, which isn't normally now,
- 3:27Speaker 1: but I will say it now, is that I was
- 3:29Speaker 1: very pleasantly surprised by the balance of the younger and
- 3:32Speaker 1: the older couple in this movie, because I was worried
- 3:35Speaker 1: that they would lean too hard on the Alicia and
- 3:37Speaker 1: Arnold's storyline, and I felt there was a great balance,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and I thought they did service to Brenda and Jack's story.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I agree. Now, I want to ask you, what do
- 3:48Speaker 1: you think that the age demo is for Homewark Channel.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I don't know the answer. I'm just asking what you're
- 3:57Speaker 1: what you think it is. I would guess that they
- 4:00Speaker 1: do really well in the like thirty five to fifty four,
- 4:05Speaker 1: Demo and up. Okay, So why do you think they
- 4:10Speaker 1: push movies so hard with young actors and actresses. Well,
- 4:14Speaker 1: that's not a Hallmark only thing. That is movies in general.
- 4:20Speaker 1: We hear all the time about actors age out of roles,
- 4:24Speaker 1: particularly women. So I agree that Hallmark focus is really
- 4:30Speaker 1: hard on young love, first love, falling in love, getting
- 4:33Speaker 1: married and I loved. We've been asking for this very specifically.
- 4:39Speaker 1: We use the phrase a second chance at love. I
- 4:41Speaker 1: have a note on that later, and then they called
- 4:44Speaker 1: the movie a second Chance at Love. I think. I
- 4:47Speaker 1: think it's just what entertainment does. I just think that
- 4:53Speaker 1: Hallmark is not serving its viewers. I agree, and I
- 4:57Speaker 1: know I've said it before, and I feel like I
- 4:59Speaker 1: say it a again and again and again. But I'm
- 5:03Speaker 1: out of the season of life about getting married that
- 5:09Speaker 1: first love, Yeah, planning a wedding. Then I really want
- 5:14Speaker 1: to watch stories movies whatever where I'm at in my life. Okay,
- 5:21Speaker 1: here's my question, though, Okay, do you really I do?
- 5:24Speaker 1: I really do? So I am tired of like longing
- 5:29Speaker 1: for the past days gone by. Yes, I that's a
- 5:34Speaker 1: great point, and I'm just sitting here thinking to take
- 5:38Speaker 1: a little bit of a left turn in terms of content.
- 5:41Speaker 1: You are, and I am fans of Bravo programming a
- 5:47Speaker 1: number of their shows. But let's take the Real Housewives specifically. Okay,
- 5:51Speaker 1: I watched the Orange County Housewives. We live in Orange County.
- 5:55Speaker 1: I don't find them at all relatable, agree, but I
- 6:00Speaker 1: find them entertaining. Maybe that's a different thing because I
- 6:06Speaker 1: don't necessarily want to watch the pta Moms of Central
- 6:09Speaker 1: Orange County on Bravo by third do I know? But
- 6:14Speaker 1: maybe I do want to watch a fictionalized scripted story
- 6:20Speaker 1: about real people that I can relate to. Let me
- 6:24Speaker 1: talk about that book that I read on our Pop
- 6:27Speaker 1: Culture Club episode from a couple months ago. Okay, it
- 6:31Speaker 1: was called what Now. It was either called The Flat
- 6:34Speaker 1: Share or it was called The Idea of You, The
- 6:36Speaker 1: Idea Yes You. And that was a story about a
- 6:41Speaker 1: middle aged not quite middle aged woman I think she's
- 6:44Speaker 1: thirty nine in the late thirties, yes, falling in love
- 6:47Speaker 1: but like a twenty one year old Hey Hollmark, make
- 6:52Speaker 1: some movies like that, right, Like, it doesn't have to
- 6:55Speaker 1: be as like that book was very steamy and racy.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Doesn't have to be that give me a watered down
- 7:02Speaker 1: version of that, Like I that's the kind of I
- 7:05Speaker 1: don't want to say that's the only movie I want
- 7:06Speaker 1: to watch on Homewark, but I want to see a variety.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I want to see a variety like show me that,
- 7:12Speaker 1: or show me or you know, I want to see
- 7:16Speaker 1: you know you said, like you don't want to watch
- 7:18Speaker 1: Pta Moms of Central Orange County. Fine, but I also
- 7:22Speaker 1: don't want to watch like a movie about a man
- 7:27Speaker 1: and woman who've been married twenty years and just struggling
- 7:31Speaker 1: through the day to day. They don't have anything to
- 7:33Speaker 1: talk about anymore, No, but they can make it a
- 7:35Speaker 1: romantic story, you know what I mean? Like, I just
- 7:39Speaker 1: I just want to see some of that, and I
- 7:41Speaker 1: am glad that this movie had a little bit of it.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I agree, I was very I enjoyed this movie. Spoiler alert. Okay,
- 7:52Speaker 1: so let's get into News and Notes. You already gave
- 7:54Speaker 1: your first impression and I will give mine after we
- 7:56Speaker 1: do News and Notes. Okay, Okay. This movie filmed Canada,
- 8:00Speaker 1: mostly around Vancouver, also film during late January early February,
- 8:06Speaker 1: which quick turnaround, real quick. Yeah, for the first movie
- 8:11Speaker 1: in the lineup. Kind of surprised that it had that
- 8:15Speaker 1: short of turnaround. Yeah, I agree. And they've been promoting
- 8:20Speaker 1: this movie longer than the others, which means I'm going
- 8:23Speaker 1: to assume that the others had an equally short turnaround.
- 8:26Speaker 1: It's gonna be like late February March. This was filmed
- 8:29Speaker 1: because before we got a full Spring into Love lineup,
- 8:33Speaker 1: we got the March lineup, And the only movie that's
- 8:37Speaker 1: officially part of Spring and to Love to Aaron March
- 8:40Speaker 1: is this movie right here. Yeah, a second chance at Love. Now.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I feel like we've talked this to death, but I
- 8:47Speaker 1: would like to point out the two of the stars
- 8:49Speaker 1: of this movie, Eric Lasal and Gloria Rubin acted together
- 8:52Speaker 1: in Er. They have not been on screen together in
- 8:56Speaker 1: twenty years. That's a long time. I was thrilled to
- 9:01Speaker 1: see them back together. I was a big er fan.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Were they on in the early days of R like
- 9:08Speaker 1: they were they original cast. I read that Eric Lasal
- 9:12Speaker 1: was in one hundred and seventy one episodes of ER.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Oh wow. I think he sharded as like a resident
- 9:19Speaker 1: or like, I think he worked his way up. I
- 9:21Speaker 1: don't think he was. Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but Eric
- 9:26Speaker 1: Lasal I think was on the majority of the time.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Whether he was really the pilot, he was a one
- 9:31Speaker 1: hundred and seventy one episodes of VRS. I don't know
- 9:33Speaker 1: how many, how many seasons A lot of seasons of VR.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I have vivid memories of the opening of him, like
- 9:39Speaker 1: sliding along the floor doing in his scrubs doing Oh,
- 9:42Speaker 1: that's funny, I guess celebration. My memory of him is
- 9:44Speaker 1: he was kind of like a grumpy Gus on that show. Yeah,
- 9:48Speaker 1: but I haven't seen it in so long. I don't
- 9:50Speaker 1: know if i've wreckon that in my mind. I think
- 9:53Speaker 1: he was just like super intense about his job. Yeah,
- 9:56Speaker 1: but I was happy to see them back on screen together.
- 9:59Speaker 1: And Eric Lestyle himself recently signed a three book deal
- 10:04Speaker 1: for a crime thriller series. And what I liked about
- 10:07Speaker 1: the story I didn't like. Let me tell you. He
- 10:10Speaker 1: submitted several book repolesals and had them refused and finally
- 10:14Speaker 1: was able to get one picked up. And I don't
- 10:18Speaker 1: like that he worked so hard, But I liked the
- 10:20Speaker 1: success story. I don't like the multiple rejections, but I
- 10:23Speaker 1: like the look. There was a success at the end
- 10:25Speaker 1: of this out of perseverance. And I love a crime film.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I know, I'm thrilled for you. They call them gritty
- 10:33Speaker 1: crime novels into it. The working title of this movie
- 10:40Speaker 1: was called I Do Again. Now, Oh, okay, what do
- 10:45Speaker 1: you do again? Here's what I think. I think someone
- 10:49Speaker 1: from Hallmark is listening to our podcast because we said specifically,
- 10:55Speaker 1: and if I could go back and find the episode,
- 10:58Speaker 1: I will link it in our show notes. But I
- 11:00Speaker 1: said specifically, or we did, we want a second chance
- 11:04Speaker 1: that love stories and then wamma, you guys, there's a
- 11:08Speaker 1: movie called that. It's not like those are like uncommon words. No,
- 11:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna look it up. I'm gonna see if I
- 11:16Speaker 1: can find it. I know we specifically use the word
- 11:19Speaker 1: second chance love. I remember I was in my closet
- 11:21Speaker 1: recording and at a time I remember it too specific
- 11:24Speaker 1: I vividly remember it as well. I do. I know
- 11:27Speaker 1: we said it, and I would you know. I don't
- 11:30Speaker 1: know if you remember, but we used to do I
- 11:33Speaker 1: know you remember this, but we used to do Big
- 11:35Speaker 1: Brother predictions at the beginning of every season, and then
- 11:39Speaker 1: we would do some thoughts throughout the season. And at
- 11:42Speaker 1: one point there was a cast member named Winston Yes,
- 11:46Speaker 1: oh yes, and he and another cast member were very similar.
- 11:50Speaker 1: And I in a video called he and the other
- 11:54Speaker 1: cast member. I said hashtag Twinston yes, and then they
- 11:59Speaker 1: use that on the episode. Yeah, and somebody is watching
- 12:01Speaker 1: her stuff. So that seems very That was very specific.
- 12:07Speaker 1: What else do you have for news and notes? Uh?
- 12:09Speaker 1: Just a small one. Bj Harrison was in this movie.
- 12:15Speaker 1: She played Mi Ma I love Beja Harrison And I
- 12:18Speaker 1: don't even know if she had any lines in this
- 12:21Speaker 1: movie other than I'm going on a date. I got
- 12:23Speaker 1: a friend coming over. Yeah. She is just one of
- 12:27Speaker 1: those Hallmark players. You see her in so many movies,
- 12:31Speaker 1: and sometimes she has like a bigger role, sometimes she
- 12:33Speaker 1: has a small little role. I just I get like
- 12:37Speaker 1: this overwhelming, like feeling of like warmth and happiness when
- 12:42Speaker 1: I see her. I was gonna say the same thing.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I feel so comforted when she's on screen, you know,
- 12:48Speaker 1: And I'm like, give this woman her own freaking movie. Yes,
- 12:51Speaker 1: Everything's gonna be okay when I see her. Yeah, I
- 12:54Speaker 1: just love her. I love her. Tell me your first
- 12:57Speaker 1: impression of this movie. Here's my first impression, and it
- 13:00Speaker 1: really does some have to do with the movie. Oh,
- 13:03Speaker 1: I made a real mistake not adding Eric Lassal to
- 13:06Speaker 1: my Hot Dude's list. Oh that's a great point. Fifty
- 13:10Speaker 1: nine and fine, I was so taken with him. Does
- 13:14Speaker 1: he make the list? Though? What was our age limit?
- 13:16Speaker 1: It was fifty five? Oh yeah, I was it fifty
- 13:21Speaker 1: five or was it sixty? I can't remember now it
- 13:25Speaker 1: had it been fifty five? Maybe? I think you're right.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I think you're right for the new listeners. What I'm
- 13:31Speaker 1: talking about is several months ago, we did a Hot
- 13:36Speaker 1: Old Dudes, Hot Old Dudes episode on our regular Tuesday podcast.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I will leave a link to it in our show notes,
- 13:42Speaker 1: where Megan and I shared our favorite hot old dudes
- 13:46Speaker 1: and we had a threshold. I think it was sixty.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I don't know. It must have been fifty five. Yeah,
- 13:53Speaker 1: I think it was fifty five because Keanu Reeves is
- 13:55Speaker 1: like fifty nine and we discussed him. Anyway, I think
- 13:59Speaker 1: this is what I'm thinking. I think we're gonna have
- 14:01Speaker 1: to revisit this topic year after year. Oh yeah, we
- 14:04Speaker 1: need some sort of March Madness type like tournament bracket. Yes,
- 14:10Speaker 1: bracket I'm making with my hands. Bracket is quite impressive.
- 14:15Speaker 1: You know, that's a that episodes is a good time,
- 14:17Speaker 1: and I'll be honest, it was more for us, like
- 14:20Speaker 1: it was a funny idea we had. We thought it
- 14:22Speaker 1: would be fun. It's a very popular episode that I
- 14:25Speaker 1: was surprised by because you never know, I thought people
- 14:28Speaker 1: would be like, give me a break, I'm listening to this.
- 14:30Speaker 1: It was a good time, and I think people agreed.
- 14:33Speaker 1: So give that one a listen. And Eric Leasal needs
- 14:35Speaker 1: to be on my indeed, I'm gonna go edit it
- 14:37Speaker 1: and it's gonna be like Eric Lasal. All right, let's
- 14:44Speaker 1: talk about what we liked about A Second Chance at Love. Okay,
- 14:48Speaker 1: I want to start a real surface level, Okay. I
- 14:51Speaker 1: thought this movie was visually beautiful in a lot of ways.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I loved Alicia's wardrobe throughout m M. I especially loved
- 15:00Speaker 1: the pink skirt she wore on her honeymoon getaway. It
- 15:05Speaker 1: was just this real bright Coraly pink rap skirt, so cute.
- 15:09Speaker 1: She had great accessories. And I loved the home that
- 15:13Speaker 1: Alicia and Arnold lived in. Real modern, one hundred percent
- 15:17Speaker 1: not my style, but every time they did an exterior
- 15:21Speaker 1: shot of that house. For some reason, I felt like
- 15:23Speaker 1: I was in an episode of Modern Family Interest, because
- 15:25Speaker 1: that's how they would always send her where they were
- 15:27Speaker 1: is by doing an exterior shot of the family and
- 15:31Speaker 1: cam and Mitchell Mitchell. I was like, his name is Jesse.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I think in really, I think they lived. Did they
- 15:38Speaker 1: live in like a more modern house? I don't remember anyway. Regardless,
- 15:43Speaker 1: I enjoyed their home. I thought it was really sleek
- 15:45Speaker 1: and beautiful on the inside and visually. Also, Gloria Rubin
- 15:52Speaker 1: as Brenda's wedding dress, did you clock it? No, it
- 15:58Speaker 1: was just beautiful. It was pants. It was vance. I
- 16:03Speaker 1: had to rewind it, yes, because oh I just noticed
- 16:06Speaker 1: the neckline. I just thought it was kind of casual
- 16:10Speaker 1: is the wrong word, But it wasn't a classic princess
- 16:13Speaker 1: ball gown. And I just thought the silhouette. I was like,
- 16:16Speaker 1: this is a perfect second wedding to keep. No, gosh,
- 16:21Speaker 1: I don't know, you guys, I had to keep. And
- 16:23Speaker 1: it was pants and it was like one hundred percent
- 16:25Speaker 1: of something I would wear. I love that it's pants.
- 16:27Speaker 1: That makes me like it even more. Me too, And
- 16:30Speaker 1: I thought like, oh, did she wear pants throughout the movie,
- 16:32Speaker 1: and I was like, no, just because at that last
- 16:34Speaker 1: previous scene she was in a dress. Yeah, and she's
- 16:37Speaker 1: dancing in skirts often. Yeah, it was very pretty. I'm
- 16:40Speaker 1: surprised you didn't put that on in the did you
- 16:43Speaker 1: see that moment? Well, it was what I liked. Okay, Well, no,
- 16:49Speaker 1: that's fine. Uh. You talked about this earlier, and I
- 16:53Speaker 1: agree that. I am so happy that this movie wasn't
- 16:57Speaker 1: story heavy on Alicia and Arnold. I was because Arnold sucks.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Arnold did suck. We'll get to that, okay, And I
- 17:06Speaker 1: was like happy it wasn't like this like twist on
- 17:09Speaker 1: Mingle all the way, stupid dating app NAFU nonsense. I
- 17:14Speaker 1: mean it did have that, and honestly, they they didn't
- 17:17Speaker 1: even need that other than like getting them together. I
- 17:21Speaker 1: thought the app itself faded into the background, even though
- 17:24Speaker 1: the app was created by Arnold's company. Right. I liked that.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I agree that it was not a focus on look
- 17:30Speaker 1: at this new fangled app we've created, because guess what
- 17:32Speaker 1: happens when you do that? Movie doesn't age? Well, no,
- 17:35Speaker 1: exactly exactly. I love the music in this movie. Yeah,
- 17:38Speaker 1: I don't know if you caught it. I was like,
- 17:40Speaker 1: this feels like a very contemporary, and it was. These
- 17:44Speaker 1: songs were not like made today, they were popular songs
- 17:49Speaker 1: of days ago. I was like, hey, look at that
- 17:52Speaker 1: just the two of us when they're dancing. That's the
- 17:54Speaker 1: song they have Hotel. I couldn't remember, but they played
- 17:57Speaker 1: it at the very beginning too. I was just so
- 17:59Speaker 1: I just like that, especially in the opening scene. I
- 18:01Speaker 1: think they're playing just the two of us where it's
- 18:04Speaker 1: a young Alicia and she's watching her mom and dad
- 18:07Speaker 1: dance in the living room, and I just was like,
- 18:09Speaker 1: that makes me so happy, and like I kind of
- 18:12Speaker 1: wish like my own home was like that. Like, but
- 18:15Speaker 1: my husband and I dancing in the living room where
- 18:17Speaker 1: my daughter watching is not something that would ever happen ever,
- 18:22Speaker 1: But I like the idea of it. Yeah, it just
- 18:24Speaker 1: feels like warm and sweet, right. I think that was
- 18:27Speaker 1: the vibe through a lot of this movie. It felt
- 18:29Speaker 1: like a warm, happy family. Yes, so many of these
- 18:35Speaker 1: movies we have like dire, We're gonna lose the family business,
- 18:40Speaker 1: the home is being four clothes, yeah, right, And there
- 18:44Speaker 1: wasn't any of that. Yes, there was some relationship drama,
- 18:47Speaker 1: but sometimes I get a little bit stressed out watching
- 18:51Speaker 1: these like we're gonna lose it all. Yeah, yeah, I'm
- 18:55Speaker 1: glad they didn't. I really really loved how natural Eric
- 18:59Speaker 1: and Glory were together, Like they just fell into their
- 19:03Speaker 1: like old not roles, but like just that old chemistry
- 19:08Speaker 1: that they've had working years and years together. I just
- 19:11Speaker 1: loved it. I agree. I just watching them on screen
- 19:15Speaker 1: felt so natural, And when they see each other for
- 19:20Speaker 1: the first time in the restaurant, it felt like exactly
- 19:24Speaker 1: how I would imagine. You know, this is the reason
- 19:27Speaker 1: you were married to that you loved, and now you're
- 19:29Speaker 1: out put supposedly with somebody else running. It's awkward, but
- 19:34Speaker 1: I yeah, right. There were some funny lines TONI. We
- 19:37Speaker 1: were talking about that restaurant when they run in and
- 19:39Speaker 1: they end up having dinner, and she was like, goes
- 19:41Speaker 1: to split the bill and he's like, he says to me,
- 19:44Speaker 1: I was loking me break have I ever? I just
- 19:47Speaker 1: thought that was good. One of my favorite scenes was
- 19:49Speaker 1: at the very end. It was the Christenine scene and
- 19:52Speaker 1: Grandpa Jack was just so excited for his daughter to
- 19:56Speaker 1: have this baby girl, and I just was like, oh,
- 19:58Speaker 1: I love it. Loved it. So speaking of that christening scene.
- 20:02Speaker 1: One of the things I loved is I loved the
- 20:04Speaker 1: whole flash forward element, the where are they now? We
- 20:08Speaker 1: had two concurrent storylines happening right, and so I liked
- 20:13Speaker 1: that not only do we get to the wedding, but
- 20:15Speaker 1: then we see at the wedding that she's pregnant, and
- 20:18Speaker 1: then we flash forward even further to the christening and
- 20:21Speaker 1: everyone has a happy ending, and they cleanly wrapped up
- 20:25Speaker 1: both storylines in a believable way. Let's talk about what
- 20:30Speaker 1: we wished for. And this is the part of the
- 20:33Speaker 1: podcast if you're a new listener, where we talk about
- 20:37Speaker 1: the things that we didn't love so much about the movie. Yeah,
- 20:41Speaker 1: changes we would make if we were on the writing stuff.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Alicia needs a backbone, okay to her husband or parents
- 20:50Speaker 1: or both, I think both. But look, your mother going
- 20:57Speaker 1: through a breakup. While it's nice for you to be
- 21:01Speaker 1: there for her, is not a tragedy that necessitates you
- 21:05Speaker 1: inviting her on your anniversary trip away with your husband.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Never this is ever. I'm gonna call you, mom. I'm
- 21:13Speaker 1: gonna they were going away for a weekend, not a month.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Let's have lunch when I come back, mom, not you
- 21:21Speaker 1: should come with us. There's no logic in that. Oh,
- 21:23Speaker 1: I invited her to come with me. Now I thought
- 21:26Speaker 1: Arnold sucked and I we will get to that. But
- 21:29Speaker 1: it was in this moment that I was like, what
- 21:32Speaker 1: are you doing? Well? Even the mom she'd been like, no,
- 21:35Speaker 1: that's a terrible idea. I'm not going to go away
- 21:37Speaker 1: on your anniversary weekend. And here's what they ignored. The
- 21:41Speaker 1: mom doesn't live alone. She lives with her mother, so
- 21:45Speaker 1: she's not sitting at home alone. First of all, she's
- 21:47Speaker 1: an adult woman who's gone through a breakup. While she's
- 21:49Speaker 1: entitled to feel sad, I don't think she needed. This
- 21:53Speaker 1: is a woman who's very successful in her career, who
- 21:55Speaker 1: has raised a daughter. She didn't need the coddling that
- 21:58Speaker 1: Alicia was giving her, right And so I think they
- 22:01Speaker 1: both failed in that moment. And I really think that
- 22:04Speaker 1: would have been a moment for mem to step in
- 22:06Speaker 1: and be like what is happening? Totally, No, stay home, Totally,
- 22:10Speaker 1: I do not care that she invited you. Totally, that
- 22:13Speaker 1: would have been a great idea. I thought Arnold wasn't
- 22:17Speaker 1: very empathetic to his wife and what she was dealing with. However,
- 22:23Speaker 1: I also thought like Alicia was far too involved in
- 22:28Speaker 1: her parents' lives, like it was on the day to day.
- 22:33Speaker 1: I don't talk to my parents on the day to
- 22:34Speaker 1: day neither do I, and I consider myself very close
- 22:36Speaker 1: to my parents. Yeah, I two a week. Two. Yeah,
- 22:41Speaker 1: I'm not meeting my dad up for a run and
- 22:43Speaker 1: then like badgering him over like his recent breakup or whatever.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Like No, And if your parents accidentally meet on a
- 22:53Speaker 1: dating app and start dating, I think it is not
- 22:57Speaker 1: only okay, but perhaps preferred. And what's the word beyond
- 23:09Speaker 1: reasonable for them to keep that information from their daughter. Sure,
- 23:12Speaker 1: many children of adult parents dream of their parents getting
- 23:16Speaker 1: back together. And so if you've gone on one date,
- 23:20Speaker 1: why give your daughter either false hope or false anxiety
- 23:24Speaker 1: or you don't know what's happening. She's not entitled to
- 23:27Speaker 1: the information about your adult dating life exactly. And the
- 23:31Speaker 1: other thing is tears like they've been divorced for many years,
- 23:34Speaker 1: are we to say that they I know that Jack
- 23:37Speaker 1: obviously was like a serial dater or whatever, And didn't
- 23:42Speaker 1: she say something like he always like breaks it off
- 23:44Speaker 1: when it gets too close. And I don't know really
- 23:47Speaker 1: about the mom, like what her dating history was, But
- 23:52Speaker 1: I have to assume in all those years that they
- 23:56Speaker 1: probably went out on a date or two and the
- 23:58Speaker 1: daughter has been that involved every single time. Right, too much,
- 24:03Speaker 1: too much, too much. So let's talk about Arnold. Okay,
- 24:06Speaker 1: I think everyone in this movie could have benefited from
- 24:09Speaker 1: a lesson in communication. Yes, nobody knows how to communicate well,
- 24:14Speaker 1: and Arnold was passive aggressive. Absolutely, absolutely, Look, we all
- 24:19Speaker 1: get frustrated with our partners. That is a reasonable thing.
- 24:22Speaker 1: We get frustrated when they make decisions. But there's one
- 24:26Speaker 1: point where he kind of just blows her off and
- 24:28Speaker 1: is not going to talk to her about what he's like.
- 24:29Speaker 1: I don't know what to say. No, you say, I'm
- 24:32Speaker 1: frustrated because I feel like you're giving too much of
- 24:36Speaker 1: your time to your parents, and I feel like we
- 24:38Speaker 1: aren't spending any time together and we haven't had a
- 24:40Speaker 1: chance to have a conversation. That's what you say. Yeah,
- 24:42Speaker 1: I'm frustrated because I feel like we keep missing each
- 24:44Speaker 1: other and every bit of free time we have goes
- 24:46Speaker 1: to your parents. You don't say, I don't know what
- 24:48Speaker 1: to say to you. Well, okay, then there is no
- 24:52Speaker 1: solution here. It was like Judy Moody in Bett all
- 24:55Speaker 1: by himself or you know, do you remember that scene? No,
- 24:59Speaker 1: it was like dark and he was like in bed
- 25:00Speaker 1: by himself, like I think she had gotten homely. Oh
- 25:04Speaker 1: and his eyes are open and he doesn't roll over
- 25:06Speaker 1: and look at her. Yeah. I really was like, really,
- 25:09Speaker 1: are we that mad? Serious? Just not having an affair?
- 25:11Speaker 1: She was out with her mom. It's not even like
- 25:16Speaker 1: she was out with like girlfriends or something, you know what.
- 25:18Speaker 1: To me, she was like with her mom. Come on
- 25:22Speaker 1: and look, we are at the point. Granted I've said
- 25:25Speaker 1: already none of these situations were tragic and they didn't
- 25:30Speaker 1: warrant the type of involvement, but we are at the
- 25:33Speaker 1: point where we do have to attend to our parents.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Sometimes there are times we need to reroute yes. So
- 25:40Speaker 1: I felt like there was no allowance for that, while
- 25:42Speaker 1: also feeling like Alicia went overboard. Agree agree. I needed
- 25:47Speaker 1: a more realistic version of why they got divorced in
- 25:50Speaker 1: the first place. The story that was told was that
- 25:53Speaker 1: they were like, they were so in love, but they
- 25:57Speaker 1: were so committed to their careers and their careers just
- 26:00Speaker 1: like I mean, she owned a dance school or something like.
- 26:04Speaker 1: And I don't even know if they established why he
- 26:06Speaker 1: was something that makes him a lot of money because
- 26:08Speaker 1: apparently he's a sugar daddy to everybody. So I was like,
- 26:12Speaker 1: it wasn't like they were doctors or lawyers where they
- 26:14Speaker 1: like spent like hours upon hours away from the home.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And right, I mean, it's it's okay to say, like
- 26:21Speaker 1: you just fall out of not fall out of love,
- 26:24Speaker 1: But like I just thought the profession I just thought
- 26:28Speaker 1: the career angle was dumb. Yes, because it was clear
- 26:36Speaker 1: that they didn't necessarily fall out of love. They just
- 26:39Speaker 1: stopped perhaps acting like a married couple because their time
- 26:43Speaker 1: was focused on their jobs. And then they had a
- 26:45Speaker 1: child who probably took a lot of their attention, which
- 26:47Speaker 1: I think happens to lots of everybody relationships. Yes, you
- 26:50Speaker 1: get to a point, and for me, what I was
- 26:53Speaker 1: thinking is if I were in that position, my husband's
- 26:56Speaker 1: going one direction, I'm going and the other. We're both
- 26:58Speaker 1: so focused on their jobs. Who who has time to
- 27:00Speaker 1: think about getting divorced. It feels like you just kind
- 27:03Speaker 1: of keep on keeping on, especially when your kids are little. Yeah,
- 27:07Speaker 1: and then maybe you look back and go, oh, what
- 27:09Speaker 1: have we been doing the last fifteen years? Yeah, But
- 27:13Speaker 1: to be that aware that you're headed in opposite directions
- 27:19Speaker 1: and then not attempt to write the ship seems surprising
- 27:25Speaker 1: to me. Yeah, they just like, all right, let's get divorced.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Like I don't even go to therapy. Come on, And
- 27:30Speaker 1: he said I never wanted the divorce, right, So Gloria's
- 27:33Speaker 1: out there, excuse me, Brenda's out there pushing for it.
- 27:38Speaker 1: That didn't jive with her character in this movie. Yeah. Yeah,
- 27:44Speaker 1: the last thing that bothered me was there he comes,
- 27:50Speaker 1: Jack comes to the resort or wherever they're at, and they're,
- 27:56Speaker 1: you know, dancing, and he's obviously very much wants to
- 27:59Speaker 1: get back together with her, and she's still questioning the
- 28:03Speaker 1: relationship and is it worth it and I don't know
- 28:05Speaker 1: and we need to talk and no, and then pH
- 28:08Speaker 1: he proposes and she says yes, like in a span
- 28:11Speaker 1: of five minutes. Yeah, like she's obviously really concerned about
- 28:16Speaker 1: like what all this means? Dude, don't propose? Yeah, how
- 28:21Speaker 1: about like, let's let's see what happens. Let's go on
- 28:26Speaker 1: a couple more dates, yeah, and see where we're at. Yeah,
- 28:30Speaker 1: come on, it's time for digitsu. That where we poke
- 28:33Speaker 1: some holes in this movie. I don't have too many pokes.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I just have some funny observances. Okay, you got pokes,
- 28:41Speaker 1: I got I got a funny observance and a little
- 28:44Speaker 1: bit of a poke. Okay, let me hear. So early on,
- 28:47Speaker 1: we see Alicia at her job and she and her
- 28:51Speaker 1: work bestie both have clients in their chairs. Yes, work
- 28:55Speaker 1: bestie appears to actually be styling the hair of the
- 28:57Speaker 1: person in her chair. But Alicia is just fluff that hair.
- 29:00Speaker 1: She fluffs and she fluffed and she fluff and you
- 29:03Speaker 1: know that this was not a one take conversation, and
- 29:05Speaker 1: there's multiple camera angles. So this poor woman in her
- 29:07Speaker 1: chair since there with Alisha fluff in her hair, and
- 29:10Speaker 1: I have some sensory issues. I'm sitting there thinking if
- 29:13Speaker 1: I were that actress, I would be like, stop touching me,
- 29:18Speaker 1: stop touching it. I have two thoughts about that scene.
- 29:22Speaker 1: One is the two women who are getting their hair down.
- 29:26Speaker 1: The lady who Alisha was doing was fluffy. She had
- 29:29Speaker 1: a pleasant face in the mirror your other lady RBF,
- 29:38Speaker 1: and I could so relate to it, like I was like,
- 29:40Speaker 1: I make that face up the saloon because I hate
- 29:42Speaker 1: the way I look in a salon. Of course, the
- 29:44Speaker 1: lighting was like, oh, my go And I also was like,
- 29:49Speaker 1: I can totally picture this woman's character. There's always nothing's
- 29:53Speaker 1: ever right, always upset with life. I was like, is
- 29:56Speaker 1: she in a role or is she just like this
- 29:58Speaker 1: damn salon lighting is not? And then in that same scene,
- 30:02Speaker 1: you were talking about how cute Alicia's clothes were, and
- 30:05Speaker 1: I agree. And I didn't know she was a hairdresser
- 30:07Speaker 1: until she gets to the salon and she's putting her
- 30:09Speaker 1: apron on and she's in huge high heels, and I
- 30:12Speaker 1: was like, she really gonna wear those high heels all
- 30:15Speaker 1: day long behind a chair? Yeah? I mean, I guess
- 30:18Speaker 1: people probably do. Not my hair lady, but I guess
- 30:21Speaker 1: people probably do. Yeah, I've definitely seen, you know, the
- 30:27Speaker 1: salon where you and I both get our eyebrows done.
- 30:29Speaker 1: That place is full of cute stylists. I bet they're
- 30:32Speaker 1: wearing heels. They probably are. I thought Alicia was dressed
- 30:37Speaker 1: more like, well, a creative but in an office space,
- 30:44Speaker 1: in a salon. I would like to say more about
- 30:47Speaker 1: her job, and I don't want stylists to come for me. Okay.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Alicia spends a lot of time talking about how she
- 30:54Speaker 1: just can't get away from work. She can't get away
- 30:57Speaker 1: from work. How can we plan a weekend away? I
- 30:59Speaker 1: can't get away from work. Girl, You set your own schedule,
- 31:02Speaker 1: take some time off. I cannot take an appointment that
- 31:05Speaker 1: Friday and Saturday because I'm going away with my husband.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Work on a day that you don't normally work. Work
- 31:11Speaker 1: a little late one night, so you can take a
- 31:13Speaker 1: night off. I'm not saying stilos aren't busy. If you're good,
- 31:16Speaker 1: you probably are quite busy. Right, But did you see
- 31:19Speaker 1: the house they lived in. They did not appear to
- 31:22Speaker 1: be in financial dire straits to where her taking a
- 31:25Speaker 1: day off would have been financially troublesome. Well, that's funny
- 31:31Speaker 1: that you mentioned that, because when they had Alicia and
- 31:34Speaker 1: Arnold had like another couple over for dinner, and the
- 31:38Speaker 1: dude was talking about like what he did for a job,
- 31:41Speaker 1: and then Arnold got a little bit like about what
- 31:46Speaker 1: he does for work, and it kind of made it
- 31:51Speaker 1: seem like not that they were struggling, but like he hadn't,
- 31:55Speaker 1: like he wasn't making millions off of his app or whatever.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Maybe she's got daddy's money, daddy money totally m m hmm.
- 32:04Speaker 1: What else you got Matthew James Dowd, and he plays
- 32:08Speaker 1: Rob Staples in this movie, and he's an instructor at
- 32:11Speaker 1: the dance school. Can I interrupt you? Yes? Is mister
- 32:14Speaker 1: Staples the worst name for a dance instructor you've ever heard?
- 32:20Speaker 1: Mister Staples? Yeah, that's awful. Okay, that's awful. Anyway, they
- 32:25Speaker 1: have a scene where like Brenda is critiquing like his
- 32:28Speaker 1: dance or whatever, and he's dancing like he's like making
- 32:33Speaker 1: zigs arms so funny. I don't even remember that interpretive
- 32:43Speaker 1: ballroom dancing, like over and over, and then she was like, Okay,
- 32:48Speaker 1: we'll come back to that or whatever. I don't she
- 32:51Speaker 1: was interrupted, Oh, it's because Jack came with the flowers. No,
- 32:54Speaker 1: that's not why. Because when Jack comes with the flowers,
- 32:57Speaker 1: there they were dancing arm in arm. Yeah, I don't remember.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I don't. I did feel like the mister Staples storyline
- 33:03Speaker 1: was odd and not fully realized, because I thought maybe
- 33:06Speaker 1: we were supposed to think that that instructor had a
- 33:09Speaker 1: crush on Brenda. Yeah, but it was not fully fleshed out,
- 33:13Speaker 1: and so maybe he just existed as they had to
- 33:16Speaker 1: set him up as someone for Jack to have a
- 33:18Speaker 1: reaction to yeah, And that was so dumb too, because
- 33:22Speaker 1: obviously she probably owned the school or was a professor
- 33:27Speaker 1: of dancer. Gonna dance with people, It's gonna dance with people.
- 33:30Speaker 1: It's not like he walked in on them in bed together.
- 33:34Speaker 1: I was like, that's what they do for a professor
- 33:36Speaker 1: in the middle of the school, all the lights are on.
- 33:39Speaker 1: She's like running out the middle. It's not what you think. Yeah, dumb, dumb, dumb,
- 33:44Speaker 1: dumb um. At the end, when they're at the resort
- 33:48Speaker 1: and Jack asked the DJ to play their song, they
- 33:51Speaker 1: start dancing and the like they're like, let's go for
- 33:53Speaker 1: a talk. It was like twenty seconds of like he
- 33:56Speaker 1: just made them change the music just for you, finish
- 33:58Speaker 1: it out exactly, and he's like, oh, we gotta go talk,
- 34:01Speaker 1: we gotta go talk. When erics out as Jack proposes,
- 34:07Speaker 1: did you see the tear come down his face? I did,
- 34:11Speaker 1: and it looked real like it splashed off the side
- 34:13Speaker 1: of his gen too. And she It was kind of
- 34:16Speaker 1: a funny scene because she wipes it and she must
- 34:20Speaker 1: say something to him because he starts laughing and like
- 34:23Speaker 1: grabs like her hand or something like that. And I think,
- 34:27Speaker 1: like we caught like uh or not we the movie
- 34:31Speaker 1: people caught like an actual real scene BT's too and
- 34:35Speaker 1: it just looked like fun and jovial and they're like, oh,
- 34:38Speaker 1: we're gonna use it. But I was like, why is
- 34:40Speaker 1: he crying? Like for real and real life, like as
- 34:43Speaker 1: an actor, was like this scene, I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 34:46Speaker 1: cry in this scene. So do you did you notice
- 34:49Speaker 1: the light on her ring in the ring box? I did, so,
- 34:54Speaker 1: I don't know if that's still a thing. When I
- 34:56Speaker 1: got engaged, that was like that was a thing. There
- 34:59Speaker 1: was a light in your ring box, which is very cool,
- 35:01Speaker 1: but I was I thought was interesting? Is I just
- 35:04Speaker 1: assumed these are all prop rings and they've got ring
- 35:06Speaker 1: boxes lying around because the battery dies on that light. Oh,
- 35:11Speaker 1: So I was like, did they go get a new
- 35:13Speaker 1: because it just seemed like nobody would have noticed if
- 35:16Speaker 1: there was no light in the ring box right exactly.
- 35:18Speaker 1: So I just bumped on it. I'm like, oh, is
- 35:20Speaker 1: a brand new box? Yeah? And I did think for
- 35:23Speaker 1: like a quick second, like I was like, is this
- 35:25Speaker 1: movie brought to us by Diamonds USA or whatever? I
- 35:30Speaker 1: couldn't even think of like a jeweler. But yeah, I
- 35:32Speaker 1: was like waiting for like you know, like RCUs begins
- 35:36Speaker 1: with K, like you know, like on The Bachelor where
- 35:38Speaker 1: it's like, this is a Nil Laye diamond and it
- 35:40Speaker 1: fully says Neil Layne on it or whatever, but I
- 35:43Speaker 1: don't think it was. This is my last note and
- 35:46Speaker 1: it's a dumb one. It's a throwaway. But at the beginning,
- 35:50Speaker 1: when Alicia and Arnold are in their house and they're
- 35:53Speaker 1: like getting ready to leave for the day, she's making
- 35:56Speaker 1: us smoothie and she puts like a smoothie and like
- 35:58Speaker 1: a big like what I would drink water out of. Yeah,
- 36:03Speaker 1: And she's pouring this smoothie out and she leaves about
- 36:06Speaker 1: like an inch left of smoothie and like just in
- 36:10Speaker 1: the blender. Yes, And I was like, that's gonna be
- 36:12Speaker 1: so gross when she gets home. Like that's just the thing.
- 36:15Speaker 1: That's why I don't make smoothies because I don't want
- 36:17Speaker 1: to clean up that and I don't want to put
- 36:19Speaker 1: it in a in a insulated thing where like straw
- 36:23Speaker 1: gets all gunked up, Like no, why she should have
- 36:27Speaker 1: just been eating a bowl cereal or something like make
- 36:30Speaker 1: it easier. Smoothies are too messy. Totally all right, it's
- 36:35Speaker 1: time to rate this movie. Did you remember to give
- 36:37Speaker 1: this movie a rating? I did. I would like you
- 36:40Speaker 1: to hold up your fingers on a count of three, Okay, one, two, three?
- 36:44Speaker 1: Who double? Four stars? For stars for stars, look more
- 36:51Speaker 1: movies with a mature casts. I'm into it. I thought
- 36:54Speaker 1: it was a good movie, a good solid movie to
- 36:57Speaker 1: start out this spring. One hundred percent agree, a nice
- 37:00Speaker 1: strong foundation. I think they've got a lot of good
- 37:03Speaker 1: things coming. They at least have a lot of good
- 37:05Speaker 1: act doors cast. So but this is this is setting
- 37:10Speaker 1: the bar really high. And that's four out of five.
- 37:13Speaker 1: It's a five star movies very hard, but a four
- 37:15Speaker 1: star movie is a great movie in my opinion. Now
- 37:19Speaker 1: I gotta inject a note here. Yeah. On our Spring
- 37:24Speaker 1: into Love preview, we talked about next weekend's movie because
- 37:27Speaker 1: there was no details about it, just one kiss. Its
- 37:31Speaker 1: stars Santino what's his last name? Fontana, And like I
- 37:37Speaker 1: mentioned before, he did the audio voice of the character
- 37:43Speaker 1: Joe in the book You and I'm telling you every time,
- 37:47Speaker 1: like I saw the commercial, I would just close my
- 37:49Speaker 1: eyes and all I see is Joe from that book. Now,
- 37:53Speaker 1: if you haven't read that book, Joe's a bad guy.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Joe is a bad guy, but he's he's a desirable
- 37:59Speaker 1: bad guy. Yes, And then so I cannot wait to
- 38:01Speaker 1: see this movie because I just want to hear this
- 38:04Speaker 1: guy sing and talk the entire time. And then we
- 38:08Speaker 1: also talked about the Royal movie. Yes, that had no
- 38:12Speaker 1: details to it, right, and what's it called? A Royal
- 38:16Speaker 1: runaway romance? I gotta say the previous looked pretty decent
- 38:19Speaker 1: for it. Wendy, who dog royal movies? I know, I know,
- 38:24Speaker 1: I know, I don't like Royal movies and I have
- 38:27Speaker 1: very low expectations, but I thought the commercial looks okay
- 38:30Speaker 1: for it. Well, I'm excited to hear that. So, as
- 38:33Speaker 1: we said, next week is just One Kiss, which is
- 38:37Speaker 1: a little bit of a musical. We've got Broadway stars.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Santino Fontana, in addition to being a audiobook voice actor,
- 38:45Speaker 1: is also a Broadway star, as is Christa Rodriguez. I
- 38:50Speaker 1: am excited for this. I do think it could go
- 38:52Speaker 1: either way, but I am excited for a little bit
- 38:55Speaker 1: of a twist. Yeah, give me more. So, of course
- 38:58Speaker 1: we will be back for that, and don't forget to
- 39:01Speaker 1: catch our episode next Tuesday, which will be our pop
- 39:04Speaker 1: Culture Club episodes. If you want to talk more TV,
- 39:06Speaker 1: we're gonna be talking TV and books and what we're
- 39:10Speaker 1: listening to. We do that every single month, so come
- 39:13Speaker 1: back for that. Thank you for listening. If you are new,
