- 0:00Is now so lovely and I've been the area, thanks so much, and
- 0:16I was kind of kind of treating with well, Kalamazoo is a hotel,
- 0:21room, a bar, and this place to me and the case that I
- 0:28had a moment, I mean, other than looking out the bus windows,
- 0:31I do wish I had a moment to uh investigate because downtown looks beautifulness just
- 0:38it really looks lovely. So next time I'll make a date just for that,
- 0:43but beyond that. Right now, Kalamazoo in Michigan and this whole area
- 0:48is you, guys, and you've been so lovely. It's been so amazing
- 0:53to talk to you. Really great, awesome. Well, I kind of
- 0:57wanted to kick this off with, uh, let's first talk a little bit
- 1:00about no, no no before ki Alright, some of the things you did
- 1:03or some of the things you were kind of hoping to do before before she
- 1:07came into your life. Well, I I wanted to be an actor from
- 1:12a very young age. And it's hard to explain to younger people what it
- 1:19was like in I came up in the UH, graduated seventy five, went
- 1:23right into I. I got into Princeton, but I just started working and
- 1:29I diverred, I think for four years and then went A, I'm never
- 1:33going I'm just I'm in my life already, I'm acting. And what was
- 1:38available to me as an actor was the girlfriend, the wife, the dead
- 1:46wife, then the girl who's after the husband, who's you know, it's
- 1:51it was all or even kids. I remember I was twenty five. I
- 1:57no, I was thirty, and the kid playing my son was twenty five.
- 2:02So it's just like, you know, you're in these roles and it's
- 2:08all performative, and you learn how to be what they expect in Hollywood and
- 2:14in New York where I work. So getting Kira was like blowing open what
- 2:22I could do and what I was allowed to do. And I I've said
- 2:27it very often A When I got the script, it was you know,
- 2:32major Kira, and she was angry at the lead character. And I called
- 2:38my manager and I said, I think I th that was my audition.
- 2:43And I said, I think you've got it wrong. This is a man's
- 2:45role, this isn't w and it isn't no. They want a woman.
- 2:49And it was like, oh my god, and I'm not playing an evil
- 2:53character. And I get to be angry and I get to have all these
- 2:55different emotions. So whatever I not I wanted to do, Kira just blew
- 3:02it open. That's excellent sideway. Cause Terry was up on the stage last
- 3:08year and she's a good friend of yours. Oh yeah, awesome, Oh
- 3:12my god. Yes, she was fantastic, and I told her Deep Space
- 3:16nine was my gateway. That's where I started when it was time to start
- 3:22watching Uh Star Trek. I I'd known about the Kirk and you know it's
- 3:24not you know already your pop callsure. So my husband's like, we're gonna
- 3:30start. Here's the best one. Okay, let's do this. And we
- 3:35get into it, and you are a spin tire right out the gate.
- 3:37You's a firecracker. And I just kind of wonder, what did you know
- 3:42uh about Kia and what were you able to shape along the way. The
- 3:46most important thing was to choose an alien, which you meant I didn't have
- 3:53to follow what the culture was saying a woman was like, and she was
- 3:57in the future, so I could just filled her with everything I ever wanted
- 4:03UH to to show or be, which was full spectrum of human funny.
- 4:10Yes, I know she wasn't a human, but that's where I got to
- 4:14do it awesome, So that kind of gave is a communist really go for
- 4:17it. It did, and it wasn't so well received back in the day.
- 4:23People were like, why are or you acting like that? Why are
- 4:26you always angry? You know why? They and I would have a I
- 4:30wouldn't get into it, but it was like, well, because she's got
- 4:34post traumatic stress. Although I didn't have your words for it then, but
- 4:39she's been through trauma and she's not trusting and this is not a situation she'd
- 4:46alys should have with for major so but yeah, it was it. Now
- 4:53it's so interesting people see it in a whole different life because of course we've
- 4:58become a a little ways, especially with women's roles, you know, they're
- 5:02not so uh it citadeled, Yes, and it absolutely and going through with
- 5:12the rewatch and focusing on on you this time you just you did this watch.
- 5:16You were just just a broad range of the things that you could do,
- 5:19and you had a number of relationships, you were adversarial, you sang,
- 5:26you did so many things and what you don't wanna do? And and
- 5:30I did it cause I I wrote a book about the women's Star Trek and
- 5:33I went, you know what, I've never done. I've never looked to
- 5:38see what people said about the fact that I've had, uh quite a few
- 5:42lovers. Yeah, And I looked for a little while, and I went,
- 5:46Okay, I never need to do that. Back in the day,
- 5:53it was like, oh no, what oh I that was it? If
- 5:57it was not acceptable or lead care to have you know, to to just
- 6:03I I I in that way. I have different others. But that was
- 6:09another aspect that was really interesting. And I don't think they got it right
- 6:12until Odo. Yeah, I mean I realized for I really did you did?
- 6:18I did? I just didn't get it. I didn't think Kiera would
- 6:27go for the typical good looking and they both were, and and the what
- 6:32was his name? Like, no, no, the other one that I
- 6:36had, the big blonde guy Chicago, just surprised me because like, this
- 6:44is Kia and the shape shifter was just right because I felt like she fell
- 6:49in love with his soul. Yeah, the person, not the not the
- 6:54look, not the look. I just see that. Yeah, I could
- 6:57see where these other ones brought out your soft side or brought up kias outside.
- 7:00Yeah, because she definitely hadn't want to write off the gate. She
- 7:03does not, but she she grows into it. What I think was a
- 7:08real interesting relationship you did not do was gold tokot. Now. Actually I
- 7:17remember Ira Stephen Beer, our executive, one of our executive producers, saying,
- 7:23so in abscript coming up, You're going to have a relationship with Ducat
- 7:28And I was like, no, never, no, no. And he's
- 7:31from Brooklyn and I'm from Manhattan. And when we argued, people thought we
- 7:36were really angry, but that's just how New Yorker's talk. It was like
- 7:42absolutely. And finally he's he said, okay, all right, but your
- 7:46mother had a relationship with him, And I was like, oh no,
- 7:51just but yeah, I didn't think Kiera would ever, I mean, certainly
- 7:58have a relationship with my sure, just not him. I know, I
- 8:03think he would have lost something. I think. I think it's unbelievable.
- 8:07Mum hm no. And I actually got I didn't go to the curdiascan around
- 8:11cause I think she was still I mean, she was developing a professional relationships.
- 8:16She could talk with them and not spit in their face anymore. Right,
- 8:18But she made that growth, she made the growth yet and that's what
- 8:22made her one of the greatest characters of growth on that show. I felt
- 8:28one of my favorite things, the most interesting art I think you had,
- 8:33was when you were pregnant. I'm set, I thought. I mean it
- 8:37was really you're not hiding behind a face, like hitting behind a desk in
- 8:41a chair. Oh you know, I got good here for two three months.
- 8:46So how did that process go about? Like we did you find out
- 8:48when you're like, this is what we're doing? Well, I found out,
- 8:52and I thought, and I'm fired because I did. I really thought
- 8:56I was uh not going to be capped, or at the very least I
- 9:01would, I would be diminished. And it didn't happen. It was so
- 9:05great again, just the quick heads up, we'll be leaving today at three
- 9:13p m. May. She had a number to her table to get those
- 9:18autographs before she leaves forever right now, right now. Uh IRA's wife,
- 9:30Laura, who is a physicist and a ballerina, which is the weirdest combination,
- 9:39but she's both. She was the one who said shuttle craft accident and
- 9:43then she can she doesn't have to hide as the reason for my pregnancy,
- 9:48and that was brilliant and a woman's idea and a woman's idea yep, and
- 9:54I could just go on with life. It was great, It was it
- 9:58was fantastic. Was that such a great story and it kind of got to
- 10:01play into the struggles of working and being pregnant and you kind of got to
- 10:07it did and ever got to the line. Everyone was so great to me
- 10:11on set about it. I was not great to myself, yeah, because
- 10:16I felt so uh worried about not getting and not making it. Ah.
- 10:24You d you get tight to a crew and to uh the people you're working
- 10:28with, and when sixteen hours is your you know, your shortest day,
- 10:35and those crew members are there every single day. I would think, now
- 10:39the camera guys got to get home to his kids. I don't wanna do
- 10:43anything that makes the day longer. And I was so self conscious about not
- 10:48taking time, not taking space. I think I over did that. Yeah,
- 10:54and I didn't care for myself well enough when I was pregnant and working
- 10:58those long hours. What is there something about that? You know? Both
- 11:03of them, I have two sons. One was an infant when I started,
- 11:07and then Buster and Django, Uh was in ninety six, and I
- 11:15remember we were still filming and they they had the channel changer and they were
- 11:20going through looking for stuff. There's a uh so there's mama and they they
- 11:28had no interest cause they would be on the set all the time, so
- 11:31they'd see it, you know there. Yeah, And I know when Alexanders
- 11:37did Dig joined Game of Thrones. I was watching Game of Thrones all the
- 11:41time, and then when he was on, it's like, oh now it's
- 11:43ruined. You know, you can't buy the I I know how they go.
- 11:50Yeah, it's like some of them as it. Yeah. So I
- 11:54started watching early two thousand, so this is take it there Netflix discs.
- 12:01Remember when those were shook to your house Netflix discs? Oh yeah, And
- 12:05I watched the documentary What We Left Behind, and I was floored by some
- 12:09of the things they were saying, like the series was not liked it all
- 12:13at first. It's not a star Trek and listen that. Like I am.
- 12:16I gonna say something like, I felt like your show is very it
- 12:22fit in the nineties quirk kind of thing, Like I'm a big Twin Peaks
- 12:24fan. So it got a little weird, it got a little supernatural,
- 12:28and it fits with X Files. I'm like, what I'd be like you
- 12:31either broke this to another fan or they don't. Well, every single show
- 12:37and I I've interviewed a lot of people at this point, and every single
- 12:41show they I there's someone who says, this is not my star Trek.
- 12:46Now they've jumped the shark. This is not a star Treck, so e
- 12:50I. They said that for Next Generation, they said it for our show.
- 12:54But our show was different and we weren't. First of all, we
- 12:58were serialized, which makes it really different. If you miss the show,
- 13:01you're kind of going, well, what just happened? What I missed?
- 13:05And we made the journey. It was more relational and more personal growth kind
- 13:15of journey, this kind of journey as opposed to the journey outwards and if
- 13:20you were just looking for, you know, a less complicated thought, it
- 13:26may have been overwhelming for people, although people seem to accept it much better
- 13:30now. And it's also great for streaming, yes, because you can watch
- 13:33these thoughts happen. So Netflix was great for that, especially during the pandemic.
- 13:39I remember looking on x formerly known as Twitter and seeing someone's post DS
- 13:48nine is trending. Why I know, because it was it was like a
- 13:54perfect show to go okay. I never watched that back in the day.
- 13:58Let's see what this is about. People loved it. Yeah, absolutely,
- 14:01you're so when the show wrapped and you're done, you know you're happening here
- 14:05every day. Who was like the first person you missed, but you're like,
- 14:09I don't get to see if this person though, no one. I
- 14:15I kept up with all of them. We had Sunday dinners that you know,
- 14:18people came to. I'd still had lunch with Michael Dorn all the time.
- 14:24Terry Perroll before she moved, we did walks every week in the hills.
- 14:30Yeah, at Alexander Sadig. We're luckily we co parents, so that's
- 14:35a wonderful experience. Avery's the only one. Yeah, no one sees havn't
- 14:43heard from him. He disappeared. And uh, of course Renee and Aaron
- 14:48are deeply missed, absolutely deeply missed. I knew for a couple of years
- 14:56about Renee, but Aaron was a complete story shop to shop place. So
- 15:03what do you in your opinion, where where do you think Kira went after
- 15:07that show? What would you have liked to see for her? I would
- 15:11have liked to have seen another arc, something happened where she drops out and
- 15:16then comes back. I don't. I know that she's supposed to be a
- 15:20Kai. I don't know that I really like that unless she's taken the the
- 15:26you know, changed the Bajoran spirituality of it. I don't know, especially
- 15:31since I know how many Crooked Kis there were, so well, if we
- 15:37gotta maybe she I don't revolutionize it and got it, you know, great
- 15:41again, I don't know, but I would I if if you watched the
- 15:48card at all. I do like the arc that Raffie had. I thought
- 15:54that was really interesting and I would like to, you know, cause we
- 15:56all have dips and dives and jumps and weeps in our lives. I would
- 16:02like to uh see Kira do something like that absolutely, Like I know the
- 16:07documentary said that they kind of saw her going in a better direction, though,
- 16:10like I don't know who i'd all see that she's too Yeah, she
- 16:14would still just wanna be out there and in the midst of everything. I
- 16:17think that would would have limited hers. I mean so too. So we're
- 16:22gonna start lining up for questions if you guys wanna come up here, and
- 16:26just one work thing before we go into that. Let's talk about women a
- 16:30star trek. Let's talk about your book that Yeah, I'm very excited by
- 16:34it. And I got such an opportunity to talk to not just the women
- 16:41and the writers, but the audience members and oh my god, there are
- 16:48so many extraordinary people, not just women who got inspiration from a Star Trek.
- 16:56It made me understand how important storytelling is and how important the p There
- 17:02was a chaplain who said to me, uh what she an army chaplain who
- 17:07said to me what she learned from Star Trek was to have hope, courage,
- 17:11and to remember that you were never alone. And she said when she
- 17:15goes on to a battle ground and she's comforting, uh, people who are
- 17:21dying, she keeps that in her mind, that we are never alone.
- 17:25And and I went, yeah, that is That's what I not only got
- 17:32from the show, but from this unique relationship we all have that we that
- 17:38there's a frequency that we joined when we all k talk Star Trek and we
- 17:45start there, we there's a way in to this community always, and I
- 17:51I love that KNA. From October eight October, it's being published and it's
- 17:56called Open a Channel. Yep, I'll be starting an Instagram account where there's
- 18:02so many interviews that didn't make it into the book. I'll be reading some
- 18:07of those two so to to give people as much as I possibly can about
- 18:11something extraordinary. You've got to meet and talk to. Cannot wait if you
- 18:17alright, let's bring up our first question money. Hi. Uh, my
- 18:22name Scott. I'm a a co host of a start your podcast called trek
- 18:26Cast, and I first, I just wanted to say thank you for coming
- 18:30to towam Zoo to the uh Grand rathis Comic Con who and I wanted to
- 18:33thank you for everything you've brought to the arts. And there's a wonderful series
- 18:38that we all love. And I I just wanna say I'll be having a
- 18:41trek Cast, and I think I speak for everybody who's room. Thank you,
- 18:45Thank you. I Uh, I was here last year when Jeff Macombs
- 18:52and Terry Ferrell we're here, and I I'm gonna ask you the same question.
- 18:56I answer them because your need. Can you When I asked this question
- 19:00and you just mentioned something about uh getting together for dinner, and I was
- 19:06wondering, uh about getting together for dinner? Uh, who was the best
- 19:11cook? I asked you to reparel this question. Her name came up.
- 19:15I'm how sweet? Well John Delancy and his wife were coming next weekend for
- 19:22dinner, and I think that I may. I I don't know if i'd
- 19:27give him the edge. We're right there together. John is a wonderful cook,
- 19:33really wonderful, as is his wife. So that's really I'm gonna I'm
- 19:37gonna be teaching his wife how to make these merangue mushrooms. Uh. They
- 19:42they look exactly like mushrooms, but they're made out of morangue. And it's
- 19:47it's like a classic thing to do. Did you post that you're really long?
- 19:53It's really long, but you can look it up. What's her name?
- 19:56There's there's u uh a chef who makes them. But look up mushroom
- 20:03merangues. And it's just getting the getting the feel of working with them,
- 20:08and uh, they're beautiful. I'll try to find a picture of my mushroom
- 20:12range. Actually I'll take a picture and post it next weekend when I make
- 20:17up with it. It's such an honor to see like you have believe you're
- 20:27here. I mean, you must have been the uh help this female character
- 20:33in all time. I mean that staff by a klingon. I you didn't
- 20:37need to. I mean, it was just like it's a flesh wound.
- 20:38And you notice that that was an important moment for me. That was really
- 20:44important because I wanted to make it realistic. And sometimes in a fight,
- 20:47the adrenaline is going so you don't feel it right, so you just keep
- 20:51going. It might drop you because if they hit a nerve, but otherwise
- 20:55you just keep going because I love what you notice. And then you know,
- 21:00you see that said what they would have these you know they was part
- 21:03of all of them. And I said, and I saw you beat up
- 21:07Damar, and I'm like you day that you could have taken or I think
- 21:12so let me tell you Kazy Biggs, who played Damar, needed that moment.
- 21:25So whether or not Kier could have taken on war, Michael Dorn would
- 21:30never bull out of it, cause I ask you that. And the only
- 21:37other thing is okay, Picard, they keep bringing these old characters back,
- 21:41and I mean they have to. They have to do the shoulder, They
- 21:45have to bring the show back. I mean, is there any possible what
- 21:48has what do fans have to do to get it? Well, you're you're
- 21:52the people who make a lot of things happen and always have, including you
- 21:57know, the Third Sea of the original star Trek. I mean you you
- 22:03have an effect and that's really all it is. But I don't know.
- 22:10I if Paramount is in flocks, it's being bought. I the shows are
- 22:14going to different play. I don't know. It's just hanging there because I
- 22:18mean, see if you said he Sisco may not wanna come back, but
- 22:21he said at the end he was thought they were coming back. I know
- 22:25voice over in an or we opened the job. I mean, we can
- 22:30stay at home and just recorded. It's such a punt. If you have
- 22:36anything also happen to you. Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
- 22:40I'd love to teach you. I would love to do that. I say
- 22:45again, okay, and I just appreciate all the working did here as a
- 22:49a amazing role model for people like me. So thank you for that.
- 22:53Thank you, Katy. I was wondering, I'm looking forward to your books
- 22:56so much. Was there anything putting together that book that's apprised you? H
- 23:00the when I was telling those when you working together the olds A interviews every
- 23:03day. I what surprised me, uh really was how much it shifted me
- 23:11and uh, how many times I found that my thinking in terms of being
- 23:18a woman was like dinosaur times. I didn't notice how much in a box
- 23:26I was put and how well I stayed there for most of my life.
- 23:32Now, Kira, I didn't come out and do it. That felt like
- 23:33a safe place to do it. But I was talking to uh the gods
- 23:41seeks the astronaut uh uh uh fighter pilot engineer, mother of two children under
- 23:52five at the time, Samantha Christopher Retti, and she came to my home
- 23:56to be interviewed, and she she was just going up to be in the
- 24:02space station, which she ended up commanding, and I asked her, it
- 24:07makes me cringe now, I said, wait, so you're going up for
- 24:14months? Who's taking care of your children? And she looked at me and
- 24:18went my husband. There were his children, and it was like time because
- 24:26I'm so used to the children, the tone of the house, the food,
- 24:30this the of having that be my realm and my job as well as
- 24:36my job, that it didn't even cross my mind. Well yeah, And
- 24:41from then I went to my husband and I said, Matthew, Matthew,
- 24:45wait wait now when I'm in the kitchen, I'm not going to ask you
- 24:49to help me in the kitchen. We're doing twenty minutes in the kitchen together
- 24:56because helping means it's my job and you're digning to be in there with me.
- 25:00And he went, yeah, I got it. That makes total sense
- 25:03and that's how we do it now. So there were little tiny shit.
- 25:07That's actually a huge shift for me. But those shifts surprised me the effect
- 25:15of what a lot of women know, if you see it, you can
- 25:21be it. How often that came up, the fact that they saw a
- 25:25woman allowed to get angry and she didn't get fired, That they saw women
- 25:30being engineers, if they saw a woman having commanded a shift gave them license
- 25:38to dream big. And I heard it over and over and over again,
- 25:45and that and just a woman's thought about herself being interrupted for a moment,
- 25:52going wait a minute doesn't have to be like that. But anytime a woman's
- 25:56thought it's interrupted, so as a man's and he goes, wait a minute.
- 25:59That I feel like this for me either. I don't have to play
- 26:02a role. I can people I am and bring everything I'm actually good at.
- 26:08Think it's a little landcating though. Kay, uh I'm Aubrey. I
- 26:18met you guys to Friday this morning. Uh, I just wanted to ask
- 26:22what was probably one of your favorite memories being on set and like record like
- 26:30doing uh DS nine and like I really like one of my big reasons I
- 26:36went back and watching dance name was seeing you then on the lower decks.
- 26:40Uh and I interacted to with Shacks because I knew you guys were in that
- 26:42s the cure and Sharks were saying in the same resistance, South in the
- 26:48majority of resistance, and like that was probably my big reason I went back
- 26:51and Washington because I ever had further memories. I seen your dad watch TG
- 26:55and DNS nine, So that's a big reason I got it. Start talking
- 27:00back if the start up, I I have a lot of wonderful memories.
- 27:07I mean being an actor and being allowed to do not just Kira, but
- 27:14you know uh uh uh really uh James Bond kind of character with a bad
- 27:21Russian accents, or playing the intendant and all. It was like Disneyland.
- 27:26I got to do so much and there's nothing like spending hours and that we
- 27:33reneeds to say we actually spend more time together than we did with our own
- 27:40families and becoming that tight and having the the relationship go beyond the show because
- 27:48we'd go to Europe together and plan trips around the convention, you know,
- 27:53or it traveling and catch up and let's have dinner. D Those are really
- 28:00long term, deep relationships, and I have them with some of the writers
- 28:04to who I deeply, deeply respect. If you haven't seen Ron Morris for
- 28:11All Mankind, highly recommend it, highly highly recommend that show. And my
- 28:17son Django told me you're gonna love this show. I watched the first two
- 28:19episodes. I said, not for me, he said, keep watching,
- 28:23and I needed to absolutely write, Oh my god. So if you if
- 28:27you're looking for something to watch, watch that you You're so welcome. How
- 28:40would the recipe? Can you just send me one of your marine was?
- 28:45Yeah, you get talk about it's not raining. If they work really well,
- 28:49talk about it. I'll bring talking where you? So I had you
- 28:55remember related to you as the many questions in the book questions and pretty much
- 29:00everyone knows what was mentioned that Yes, n I was not well uh with
- 29:04it during its first time. It's right. My two questions are is there?
- 29:11I'll start with can you pick a time period or an event that when
- 29:17that tipping point came? Why? Is like, oh, would you say
- 29:21it's nine, isn't isn't out of place in the Star Trek University in our
- 29:26universe seemed to me like his own thing out of space and time in general
- 29:30pop culture for a while. Yeah, anything that I gave about ten years
- 29:34ago, uh it, the tipping point was a fifteen year old boy.
- 29:38Sorry, the tipping boy was a fifteen year old boy who came up for
- 29:42a picture at a convention and I'm s I'm guessing he was fifteen. He
- 29:48was around there, and uh he said, I have such a crush on
- 29:52your character. I always like that, but a young man having a crush
- 30:03on my angry character, you know, it's not the typical you know,
- 30:08cutie. And and that was like, oh, oh, we're finally catching
- 30:15up with the time you seeing other women be like this and it's okay now.
- 30:19And that's true for the whole show. And certainly when when you can
- 30:26stream it binge watch it, you start to get it in a whole different
- 30:32way. It really should have always been seen that way. So uh yeah,
- 30:37i'd say ten When when did they start streaming it? Was it ten
- 30:42years? I'm so bad with linear terms wherever they want, but that's really
- 30:52the time that there was a huge shift and people really started to run it.
- 30:56I think you could arguablet's say time and caught up the time these days
- 31:00night in a way. Yeah, oh yeah, sorry society agree with the
- 31:03idiots. But anyway, the second part, was there any particular actor or
- 31:08character that got the most hate? Like, yeah, you say you talked
- 31:11from the cast for you're at your friends or warns might heart to no end,
- 31:15But were there any that that seemed to be disproportunately targeted or negative?
- 31:22Family? You were like you really wasn't that. I think you'd be in
- 31:26the top couple. But I wondered if there's anyone else there? But yeah,
- 31:30I like you must acknowledge that nam there. Yeah, last question about
- 31:37the foot were you tempted or did you do anything interviews as your care of
- 31:44Newe's character. Did you ever take it from that perspective to do an interview
- 31:48from that from that through that last Oh, that would have been so interesting,
- 31:52That would have been really interesting. But no, I was just so
- 31:56grateful that these women gave their time and not just and and people like I
- 32:01interviewed people in Germany and England. The ship the cruise, which if you've
- 32:07never taken it. It's a flatt It's really a blast. I and and
- 32:15hours and hours and hours of interviews and uh I, I so wanted to
- 32:22make sure I was, you know, being careful with their time and their
- 32:27effort. I but that would have been really interesting. I could write it
- 32:30all from her perspective, but it would probably be too tough on everybody,
- 32:37DLC down content or something. Yeah, I mean that's why interday, thanks
- 32:44particular the time. Thank you so much. Hey keep from uh telling zoo
- 32:53uh again. Uh, it's great to meet you. I was absolutely star
- 32:57start yesterday. But uh, I finally have a probably a good question anyway,
- 33:00But because d S nine was so serialized, right, and it was
- 33:07unusual at that time to have a story where like, you know, if
- 33:10you didn't you know, tune in last week, you didn't know what's going
- 33:13on, right, how they approached the villains and the show was completely different
- 33:19to every other Star Trek show and so like. And the thing that I
- 33:22noticed on rewatches over the last you know, you know, twenty years or
- 33:25whatever, is that you and Avery are the ones that were pitted against the
- 33:29three biggest villains in that show. And so Marcolimo, Casey Biggs and and
- 33:35uh Louise Fletcher, and those actors were so great in those roles. But
- 33:38I have to wonder, like, what was it like you being basically the
- 33:43focus or your character being the focus of kind of like basically all of the
- 33:47all of the people in the show. Yeah, was you and Avery and
- 33:51all in La almost more you than than Avery and that like you had to
- 33:55do all of these crazy scenes. Was Marco Himo and as basically one of
- 34:00the worst human you know or parassims on the show. A Yeah, And
- 34:06if there was something in particular that was memorable about it was because he came
- 34:09off to the office such as Skiz and then there were points in the show
- 34:14where they're like did he change? And then your character never varied from he
- 34:19you know, he is not better, He's always in reas. Yeah.
- 34:22But if there was something from shooting those scenes with those villains and that you
- 34:25being the focal point of that, that there was an intent from the writers
- 34:30to put you into that position. I think there was very little that they
- 34:34did that didn't have real intention behind it. And of course for me,
- 34:38it was like gold. First of all, all three of those actors can
- 34:45hit. I mean, they are unbelievable actors. So just having any kind
- 34:50of scene with an actor like that is amazing. But then to have it
- 34:54be so complicated and complex and it's not black and white, it's gray,
- 35:01and you know, Heira did wrong things too. Uh it was it was
- 35:07joyful and Luis was one of the sweetest people in the world. She had
- 35:15the most delightful laugh, a little bit like yours. You're so sweet,
- 35:20and and we'd we'd be laughing and stuff off stage about something and she would
- 35:27just and her laughter just rolled. And then we'd get in the scene and
- 35:30she just would boom, like if I would occurtain coming down and I was
- 35:36like, okay, I'm scared. She would instantly. And of course they
- 35:42are the ones that loved my character because I had to go from going,
- 35:47hey, I'll just you know, I'll just fight people and I'll just be
- 35:52angry and I'll use my physical force to going, oh, this is politics.
- 35:57I can't do that anymore. I have to move up to my prefrontal
- 36:00cortex. This is a chess match, and I gotta play. I gotta
- 36:06learn how to play. And because of them, my character had to move
- 36:12Yeah, there was a great I mean Shakespeare in the level Villa in OCTOBERG
- 36:15Yeah, maybe that's really good. Thank you so much, question that it's
- 36:24fair. Yeah, I'm in the I'm Keith's daughter. We watched the show
- 36:30together when I was a teenager, and we talked to you a lot about
- 36:32that and that, you know, like waiting that only since I was sixteen,
- 36:37and it exceeded every expectation I had so so much, so much love
- 36:42and and the gratitude for that. I think the question that I've asked,
- 36:46what was as an actor as a person at Kira? What was there a
- 36:51moment in the show where either you or the writers were struggling with this choice
- 36:59and you weren't sure if it was like going to I'm like, question,
- 37:05is this the right way for Kira? Is this? You know who she
- 37:07is? Is this her character? And do you having a moment of doubt
- 37:10about that? And then you pulled it off and it was great, and
- 37:14you know, like does that make sense? Cause I knowed that whats what's
- 37:17terry about? Like not being a over match a very bursus old man and
- 37:22then having to when you know, like have that moment of struggle as an
- 37:25actor as a person, and you know, like, how do I make
- 37:29this work in this character? And that relationship was so beautiful and they pulled
- 37:36that off absolutely, And so I wanted to ask you that kind of question.
- 37:39I was so wanting to play a complicating the character. I so wanted
- 37:47the opportunity to make a mistake as as the entity that I was, and
- 37:55had the opportunity to learn better that there was nothing that they could do.
- 38:00The only thing I I am, And as I said, I thought iron
- 38:05it was uh ah, an emotional relationship with Ducat. I just I couldn't.
- 38:10I couldn't see that that would have been a betrayal of so many of
- 38:15her ethics. Yeah, uh and that would have been j I mean I
- 38:21I would just think of a human in my time that I've heard of who
- 38:25was as evil as Ducat, and I go, no, I you know
- 38:30know, so not not that. So yeah, that's the only time.
- 38:37Uh. The the rest of it, it was like, yeah, give
- 38:39it to me, any, let me do all of it. Thank you
- 38:44so much. You so open to see and I guess my questions kind to
- 38:55her. Uh Ever, Star Tresk, did you feel like it was really
- 38:59hard go into a different kind of role or how does you feel like you're
- 39:04ever any of your characters a different role or if you did anything l I
- 39:08I Kira. It's like a place that I can drop into and be again
- 39:15and s A after seven years, so much of me is in there.
- 39:21And she changed me. She totally shifted me. Cause you know, we
- 39:27are our our brains, our synapses grow from having the same plot dropped in
- 39:34over and over and over again, we change our brains. We know that
- 39:37now for neuroscience and some of her ethics and strengths I inherited without knowing it,
- 39:45just thinking that way over and over again. So I, yeah,
- 39:52it's I. I'm gonna bring some of that no matter what I think,
- 39:57unless it's a real character role which is fun to play. But I never
- 40:01worried about doing that. I and I do feel like I'll never play a
- 40:13character with backed up again. I mean I I don't expect to. If
- 40:17I get to, I'm incredibly lucky. But I'm already lucky that I got
- 40:22to play. That's here. I was just wondering. This includes full serious
- 40:36new series moves in holding new movies. I just wanted what your favorite star
- 40:42trek was to watch you know what I love. I love strange New worlds.
- 40:46I think they do start a close really do uh a great job of
- 40:52just blending all of it and standalone. Uh. It's definitely not what we
- 40:58were doing, but they manage to do everything a lot. Uh, and
- 41:04I I admire them all, uh very much. U about would the straight
- 41:10show? We will look the news work or yes, watching to see what
- 41:15you say? It's really fun las the best part? Hello? Hi.
- 41:29You've spoken a a lot today about the range of Pira and what you were
- 41:34able to do, and I I definitely saw that growing up and watching Deep
- 41:37Space nine and seeing the part that here goes through. And you can talk
- 41:42also about the moment and so the one moment where you subjected something. But
- 41:47I'm wondering, as an actor, what did you do in all that here?
- 41:52Was was you put through? Just sent her her and keep here of
- 41:57a consistent character because she very much was no matter what she was going through?
- 42:02So what was a as an actual what was it that hacked her?
- 42:07Was typetive like that? Uh? I figuring out how she thought, how
- 42:16she thought of herself and how she thought of others? What was her purpose?
- 42:21What did she see her purpose as and uh, I think that was
- 42:25my guiding life for this character. And she was very and that's how I
- 42:30played the intended by flipping that. Uh. She was open and vulnerable and
- 42:37unprotected in the way when it came to other people. Her purpose was,
- 42:45uh this m strong compassion for others, especially the pajorined people, and that's
- 42:54I think what kept her consistent taking some wh you so welcome h more from
- 43:09shot. I was back in their call, the the first guy to keep
- 43:15space in the you know it, I know that you had. The authors
- 43:21said that if you remember I met you any convention, that we should ask
- 43:25you about the milk bath in the first crossover episode. Yeah. So the
- 43:32milk bath that I was in. So obviously I was supposed to look like
- 43:37a uh you know, I was the intendant and I was taking a bath
- 43:43and it should look very sexy and luxurious, and you know, the water's
- 43:46uh milky, thank goodness. Oh and so the e you know, I
- 43:52was wearing these awful cups you know that uh that you do. And I
- 43:59got into and they made it warm, which was great, but and it
- 44:02was scented, which was very nice. They mixed it back then. That's
- 44:07good. But the cups which are put on with you know, a certain
- 44:13kind of glue kept coming off and I was like, okay, wait,
- 44:17wait, wait, give me a towel. These are coming off okay,
- 44:22and I get I put them back on and I asked one of the guys
- 44:27who'd done the bath with the crew and said, what what's in the bath?
- 44:32Uh? My glue is in holding and he said, oh, we
- 44:37put orange oil in there. And then I asked my makeup artist, what
- 44:42do you take these things off with? You said orange oil? Thank you
- 44:52so much. I appreciate it. Pad of that only I I can I
- 45:05ask you a how a question? Or should I keep it on top of
- 45:07no? Hollywood? What does uh making it mean to you? Isn't that
- 45:15just steady work like you have? You had a lot of guest spots in
- 45:20the adies, So would that be making it? Or is it like the
- 45:24beloved you love a role and you're like, yes, that's the same.
- 45:30I had a thought when I was young of what making it was, and
- 45:34I pretty much kept to it. And there is I was like a middle
- 45:38class actor cause I hoped from show to show, did some serious did this?
- 45:44Did that? That doesn't really exist? So much anymore. It's really
- 45:49the the the business has changed a lot, and it's hard for people to
- 45:53you know, make a living a life out of hopping around like that.
- 45:59So I I I'm sorry for young actors right now. It's it's much harder.
- 46:05But I always thought I would have made it if I had the respect
- 46:12of my colleagues mm and that they would go, yeah, I wanna do
- 46:16a scene with you. Yeah, I wanna work with you sometimes. And
- 46:21and I think it's pretty much still that. That's that's making it to me,
- 46:25and working with people who can hit, that's that's the biggest joy.
- 46:32It's you know, three minutes at a time in a monthst a business that's
- 46:39hierarchical, unfair, biased in many ways, and imperfect as most systems are,
- 46:49but those three minutes, those three minutes at a time stay very little
- 46:57minute. Thank you, thank you, who Hi, I'm drive out there.
- 47:06That was a banks for coming around the top, baby too. I
- 47:09have about a thousand days I could ask you bro to two to you respected
- 47:14well. The first one more to say that I wanted to tell you a
- 47:16hosplaering that time your interview on your best cakes hot and it's you're blue my
- 47:23so strong. Love your for that. Thank you. I actually have a
- 47:28ten X talk that I think you're coming out next week. Uh that features
- 47:32how Pira helped me recover. Oh so yeah, it's amazing. Thank you.
- 47:40And and my actual question is you mentioned earlier about your name and I
- 47:45Aaron, could you tell us your favorite every movie Aaron? Aaron was Are
- 47:52the Children Here? Aaron was a pain in the ass, a giant one,
- 47:59and I love him. He he was he He would come up on
- 48:04stage if I was doing one of these things that just sit down and start
- 48:07talking and do it. He was everywhere, all at once, and for
- 48:13being more on the diminutive side, he filled the room. And he was
- 48:21loving and open and supportive and really a beautiful soul. And just before he
- 48:30died, I told him a quote that listening is leaning forward with the gentle
- 48:43intention of maybe being changed by what you're here. That's real listening. And
- 48:50that's how me do. I do AP around three thirty ten dollars a ticket.
- 49:04He is giving an away a loud Fly storm Trooper backpack and also a
- 49:12storm Trooper being changed right now something. Yeah, that's that's my favorite story.
- 49:27Just we always connect you and listened and wrote things down and was constantly
- 49:34growing and changing. He was he was so rolled your automatic Martin, remember
- 49:50my name. I'm gonna die around. Okay, really short question of going
- 49:53the longer one. The first one is has anyone research and confirmed that of
- 49:58all the Star Trek characters ever, you had the most different hairstyles. Yeah.
- 50:04When they when we were winding down, they gave us a munch and
- 50:07they did this video to say goodbye, and one sequence was just pops of
- 50:13all my different Yea. Kate went through a lot too, but she's finally
- 50:20said no more. And I just kept going, Yeah, what what if
- 50:23we do this? Ye say the same. When we were all young men,
- 50:29we crushed on Kira, right, and I was like every week it's
- 50:30like her hair changed again, started to like to be another one, and
- 50:36it was always changed yourself? Know how much like that? Uh? The
- 50:39second thing was to change from Star Trek. I watched Battle Star Galactica as
- 50:44it came out, and Uh, all of a sudden, You're just on
- 50:47the screen and I'm like, what's Major Kiratt doing here? Can you talk
- 50:52a little bit about how that all happened, how you got that scene,
- 50:55because it's interesting. You're playing the soul in a vision and it's it's not
- 51:00like a character a panel start Galactica, but you're in Banel, start to
- 51:02acting us. So how did you you just talk about that a little bit.
- 51:06Well, I love all the writers of our show. Uh. I
- 51:12had deep respect for them, and with good reason. They did some incredible
- 51:16things. And I'm a fan of Rondey Moores. And when he called and
- 51:21said, hey, would you do this cause this is a tricky scene and
- 51:24they know that I I'll go deep fast and there's so little time to get
- 51:31into, you know, especially if it's a traumatized character. To get in
- 51:37you know fast, it's what's necessary. And so he asked for your dude,
- 51:42and it's like, yep, I'll be right there. Uh, any
- 51:45of them call me, I'll be right there. Kids. You watched the
- 51:47show all before Wonders came right in. I just came right into it.
- 51:52Michael Piller asked me to do a series in New Mexico. We moved to
- 51:55New Mexico for six years and I did that. It's like, whenever they
- 52:00call, I don't know. I have such I don't even need to look
- 52:04at the script I know will be good. All right, Thank you so
- 52:07much. Uh, how do you do except pleasure having you here? Thank
- 52:15you very nice. I wanted to start it back to something that was discussed
- 52:22a little earlier, which is, uh, the Deep Base nine not being
- 52:28received terribly well when it first premiered by sometimes by the Star Trek fans.
- 52:35And that's a little difficult to believe because it's ultimately, when you think about
- 52:40it, it's the the show that sort of validates all of the other ones
- 52:46in a way mmm, because it's the it's the show that tests the metal
- 52:52of the ideals of the Federation and Starfleet, and it's how we get there
- 52:58exactly those kinds of things. And ultimately, one of the reasons I love
- 53:02the show so much is one of the messages of it is it proves that
- 53:12the ideals of Star Trek are worth believing in that they you know, it
- 53:20holds water. And my question is was that something that was necessarily apparent to
- 53:30you and the rest of the cast and the people were working on the show.
- 53:36Maybe in hindsight it's easier to see those things, but did you recognize
- 53:39that while you were working on the show. Speaking for myself, I recognized
- 53:47how important it was, and I knew from going to conventions that there were
- 53:57a certain number of people that I really needed what we were doing. I
- 54:02remember a much older woman pulling up her sleeve and showing me the numbers on
- 54:08her arm and going, your characters alive to me, and I I so,
- 54:15I I understood, And it's so interesting. So many of us take
- 54:22on the responsibility of that and understand this storytelling isn't just any story grow Sometimes
- 54:30storytelling can become about comfort, and sometimes Star Trek can be about comfort,
- 54:36but sometimes it's on a different level, and it's storytelling that can be healing
- 54:40or can tell people I'm not the only one who's done through stuff, or
- 54:45there's a way to you know, have post traumatic growth after a difficult time,
- 54:52and uh, I s I got to see that, but I didn't
- 54:55think that it would ever be uh taken in by the larger groups as it
- 55:04is now. Oh, thank you very much. Do you ever tell me
- 55:07one I'm no to look back like that? Open the channel is out in
- 55:15October. We can we can see you on Instagram about MoMA. No not
- 55:20yes, you can and just one real quick yes or no if you can
- 55:24in up a card way or some other way. If they say, if
- 55:27you want to hear about are you coming back? Yes? Have you ever
- 55:34had the other called
