- 1:32Speaker 1: it's Paul McCartney's birthday. We're going to be playing from
- 1:35Speaker 1: Sir Paul today. This portion of the program brought to
- 1:37Speaker 1: you by Central Texas Sports Medicine. Coming up, we will
- 1:43Speaker 1: preview the College World Series Championship Series and we have
- 1:49Speaker 1: got our Clark Eisenhower Outdoor edition. And man, we have
- 1:54Speaker 1: got some uh wild animals today to talk about. I'm
- 1:58Speaker 1: just telling you, and some of them are actually animals.
- 2:04Speaker 1: A sweeping federal bill or reshaped College Sports is headed
- 2:08Speaker 1: to the Senate floor, marking the first time during a
- 2:11Speaker 1: year's long effort that the full US Senate will have
- 2:14Speaker 1: the opportunity to vote on a proposed solution to some
- 2:17Speaker 1: of the issues. The Protect College Sports Act, from Senators
- 2:22Speaker 1: Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell, would provide the NCAA with
- 2:27Speaker 1: an anti trust exemption so it could enforce a cap
- 2:31Speaker 1: on payments to athletes, as well as rules related to
- 2:34Speaker 1: eligibility and transfers in college sports. The Senate Commerce Committee
- 2:38Speaker 1: voted nineteen to nine this morning to move the bill forward.
- 2:42Speaker 1: The SEC and Big Ten still don't like the bill
- 2:46Speaker 1: because it takes some power away from them. Oklahoma and
- 2:51Speaker 1: North Carolina will play in Omaha beginning Saturday for the
- 2:56Speaker 1: Championship of College Baseball. The Sooners weren't supposed to be there.
- 3:02Speaker 1: There aren't too many surprise at North Carolina is there.
- 3:06Speaker 1: The Sooners took out Georgia last night. Former A and
- 3:12Speaker 1: mnfielder Scott Livingstone has been selected as a member of
- 3:15Speaker 1: the College Baseball Hall of Fame Class of twenty twenty six.
- 3:21Speaker 1: He's the most decorated, one of the most decorated Maggie history.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Three forty two career batting average, seventy five doubles, fifty
- 3:30Speaker 1: home runs, two hundred twenty eight RBI, All Southwest Conference
- 3:35Speaker 1: three years in a row. Just one of twenty players
- 3:39Speaker 1: so designated elsewhere. Hey, Riley, I already have this list.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I told Ryder to get the list, but I've got it.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Let's see Barry Bonds of Arizona States on the list,
- 3:55Speaker 1: Jeff Brandtley Mississippi State, Marquis Grissom, floor to A and
- 4:00Speaker 1: M Bobby Lane of Texas. My gosh, that was seventy
- 4:04Speaker 1: years ago. No, that was eighty years ago. Buster Posey
- 4:10Speaker 1: at Florida State's on the list, Houston Street, the Texas
- 4:14Speaker 1: reliever coaches Danny Hall at Kin State and Georgia Tech,
- 4:17Speaker 1: and Hal Smeltzy of Florida Southern. The Texas Rangers. I
- 4:23Speaker 1: started to say that Texas Rangers are playing baseball this afternoon.
- 4:27Speaker 8: But they're not.
- 4:28Speaker 1: They're watching Minnesota, which previously had been just terrible, but
- 4:32Speaker 1: they had not played the Rangers. The Rangers fell behind
- 4:36Speaker 1: six to nothing, and they are clawing their way back.
- 4:39Speaker 1: In the seventh inning, it's seven to two. Ranger pitchers
- 4:43Speaker 1: cannot get out of the first inning. They cannot help themselves.
- 4:48Speaker 1: They allow a lot of runs in the first inning.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Jack Lyder allowed more today, four of them to be exact.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Good gosh. Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association
- 5:03Speaker 1: met today continue to negotiate the latest collective bargaining. They
- 5:07Speaker 1: release statements that don't mean anything. MLB's proposing an international
- 5:13Speaker 1: draft as part of the negotiations. Their international draft would
- 5:19Speaker 1: be restricted to players who at least eighteen years old,
- 5:22Speaker 1: as opposed to the current sixteen consists of twelve rounds.
- 5:28Speaker 1: The pitch was part of the proposal pertaining to amateur players. Also,
- 5:34Speaker 1: they're going to change home How many times has home
- 5:37Speaker 1: run derby been changed? I mean a lot, right, Honestly,
- 5:43Speaker 1: since they quit taken steroids, it's just not as fun anymore.
- 5:49Speaker 7: You know.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I was at that nineteen ninety nine All Century All
- 5:54Speaker 1: Star Game at Fenway Park when Sosen maguire kept hitting
- 5:59Speaker 1: cars in the park garage across the street from Finlaite Park. Man,
- 6:03Speaker 1: those are the.
- 6:04Speaker 7: Good old days.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Here's what we're going to do. Eight players get twenty swings.
- 6:13Speaker 1: If they homer on the twentieth swing, they can continue
- 6:16Speaker 1: until they make it out. Ties are broken by the
- 6:19Speaker 1: longest distance. Top four home run totals advance. They'll be
- 6:24Speaker 1: seated one through four based on their totals. Head to
- 6:29Speaker 1: head matchups one versus four, two versus three. Four players
- 6:33Speaker 1: get fifteen swings. Again, if they can homer on their
- 6:36Speaker 1: last swing, they can swing until they don't homer. Finals
- 6:42Speaker 1: two players fifteen swings, same kind of thing, Ties broken
- 6:47Speaker 1: with three extra swings each. You know, I just hope
- 6:51Speaker 1: it doesn't take four hours. That's my thing. Ryan Cowen
- 6:57Speaker 1: is an amateur. He's leading the US Open right now.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Now now he's early and is around at three hundred par.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Sam Stevens of the USA finished with a two hunderd
- 7:06Speaker 1: sixty eight. Wyndham Clark is on the course at minus two,
- 7:11Speaker 1: Rory Ludwig Oberg, Brian Harmon, Max Graserman, Ben James all
- 7:19Speaker 1: at minus one. The wind is howling by the way
- 7:25Speaker 1: today at Shinnecock, which doesn't need any help. There's a
- 7:29Speaker 1: lot of players on the course, but they're early in.
- 7:31Speaker 1: They're round at minus one. Kegan Bradley finished even par.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Tommy Fleetwood was even par, so there you go. Scottie
- 7:41Speaker 1: was plus two and finished at two over par and
- 7:47Speaker 1: is obviously very much in the mix. The NHL has
- 7:51Speaker 1: determined that Mike Babcock is clear to coach again, opening
- 7:56Speaker 1: the path for him to go to the Edmonton Oilers.
- 7:59Speaker 1: The NHL launched an investigation in the Babcock's resignation for
- 8:03Speaker 1: the Columbus Bluejackets three years ago. He left less than
- 8:08Speaker 1: three months on the job after his request to look
- 8:11Speaker 1: at personal photos from players' phones. Through criticism the investigation
- 8:16Speaker 1: requested by the players Association, the league issued a statement
- 8:20Speaker 1: when you're a league, you issue statements. The league has
- 8:23Speaker 1: completed it's a review of Mike Babcock's tenure at Columbus
- 8:28Speaker 1: and of certain allegations alleged conduct associated therewith. When you're
- 8:33Speaker 1: a league, you issue statements with the terms therewith. How
- 8:38Speaker 1: many times do you guys use the word therewith in
- 8:42Speaker 1: your regular language trades? You do that today as you
- 8:45Speaker 1: throw in it therewith. I'm going to try to throw
- 8:48Speaker 1: in it therewith today.
- 8:50Speaker 8: Okay.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I don't know when or how or if, but I'm
- 8:55Speaker 1: going to try to throw in a therewith today. Our
- 9:00Speaker 1: investigation has concluded that, even in light of least favorable
- 9:05Speaker 1: to mister Babcock, there is no current basis to restrict
- 9:08Speaker 1: his employment in the league. The league or the players
- 9:13Speaker 1: Association issued its own statement, but they didn't use it.
- 9:18Speaker 1: They're with and that's why they're the players and the
- 9:22Speaker 1: owners of the owners, because they use their widths. Okay,
- 9:29Speaker 1: we're going to take a small break tomorrow. Ryan is in.
- 9:36Speaker 1: On Monday. It's Dusty and Rusty. It's the new comedy
- 9:44Speaker 1: team that's taking America by storm. Tuesday, there's no show.
- 9:50Speaker 1: We've got astros baseball on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday, I'm back
- 9:55Speaker 1: with Scott Clindenon next Thursday, I'm back. Next the following Monday,
- 10:06Speaker 1: I'm back with Rusty and then I'm not okay. I
- 10:13Speaker 1: hope we've got all of that straightened out. We are
- 10:16Speaker 1: going to take a break. We're going to look at
- 10:19Speaker 1: the College World Series North Carolina, Oklahoma. And for those
- 10:25Speaker 1: of you old enough to remember, there was an evening
- 10:30Speaker 1: in Cleveland at the Old Stadium where the Cleveland Browns
- 10:35Speaker 1: played and the Indians played, you know it sat about
- 10:38Speaker 1: seventy five thousand in those days, about I don't know
- 10:42Speaker 1: five thousand showed up to watch Cleveland Indians baseball. But
- 10:45Speaker 1: on the night of June fourth, nineteen seventy four, I
- 10:48Speaker 1: meant to do this a couple of weeks ago because
- 10:51Speaker 1: that was the anniversary, but better late than never. They
- 10:56Speaker 1: had been averaging twelve to thirteen thousand fair on a
- 11:00Speaker 1: Tuesday night. On this particular night, the game drew twenty
- 11:05Speaker 1: five thousand fans. We're going to talk about that. Some
- 11:11Speaker 1: of you know what I'm talking about after this, well,
- 11:15Speaker 1: we're not going to talk about this after this. We're
- 11:17Speaker 1: going to talk about this in about thirty minutes or so.
- 11:22Speaker 1: This portion of the show is brought to you by
- 11:23Speaker 1: a co insurance.
- 11:26Speaker 9: Inco Insurance is now a part of Hub International, bringing

- 11:56Speaker 10: Howdy Patrick Kinning here with another Gilmore Electric Express light
- 12:00Speaker 10: ball moment. If you've got TVs, computers, appliances and smart
- 12:04Speaker 10: devices in your home, and most of us do, here's
- 12:06Speaker 10: a shocker. A power search can damage them in an instant.
- 12:09Speaker 10: Power strips help a little, but the best protection is
- 12:11Speaker 10: a whole home search protector installed at your electrical panel.
- 12:14Speaker 10: Protect the appliances you rely on every day with Gilmour
- 12:17Speaker 10: Electric Express for your electrical needs. Don't settle for less.
- 12:21Speaker 10: Called Gilmore Electric Express at nine seven nine seven seven light.
- 12:27Speaker 5: Everybody listen you're listening to your home for Reggie football,
- 12:31Speaker 5: basketball in baseball.
- 12:33Speaker 8: It makes you want to listen to this station.
- 12:35Speaker 7: This is the.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Song eleven Am and ninety three points seven fl.
- 12:49Speaker 8: What you wanted to be?
- 12:52Speaker 11: She said, Baby, can you see installed the scream?
- 13:01Speaker 12: Jean Baby, job come?
- 13:07Speaker 5: Yes, I'm going to be stop.
- 13:11Speaker 8: Maybe you can.
- 13:12Speaker 13: Job came?
- 13:25Speaker 14: Stood?
- 13:26Speaker 7: What have you with us?
- 13:28Speaker 1: We are celebrating the eighty fourth birthday of Sir Paul
- 13:33Speaker 1: McCartney today and just in case a few of you
- 13:36Speaker 1: needed anything else to remind you of how old you are,
- 13:40Speaker 1: I am reminded every single day, including nineteen seventy four
- 13:49Speaker 1: June fourth in Cleveland. So last night, well, no, yesterday afternoon,
- 13:57Speaker 1: while we were on the air just finishing up, North
- 14:02Speaker 1: Carolina was drubbing West Virginia to reach the Final Series
- 14:08Speaker 1: where they were in six and seven. After almost twenty years,
- 14:14Speaker 1: they are back. I brought the long sheet of paper in.
- 14:24Speaker 1: We've got Scott Forbes, We've got Owen Hull, I've got
- 14:33Speaker 1: two more North Carolina players, and I'll have those names
- 14:36Speaker 1: for you when we come back. Here is post game
- 14:41Speaker 1: from the North Carolina win that got them into the
- 14:44Speaker 1: Championship series.
- 14:46Speaker 15: Yeah, that sip of that coke was for coach Williams.
- 14:50Speaker 15: He's one of the first texts I looked at. You know,
- 14:52Speaker 15: I want to congratulate West Virginia. A heck of a team,
- 14:56Speaker 15: heck of a run. They made, very well coached, They
- 15:00Speaker 15: just played a game the right way. As their credit
- 15:02Speaker 15: to their coaching staff. They come at you a lot
- 15:05Speaker 15: of ways, a lot of speed, deep pitching staff. So
- 15:07Speaker 15: we really had to work in those two games to
- 15:11Speaker 15: beat them and been in their shoes. I know what
- 15:15Speaker 15: that feels like, and it's a stinker. But man, they
- 15:18Speaker 15: got a lot to be proud of, and they should
- 15:19Speaker 15: be extremely proud of how they represented their university. Moving on, man,
- 15:25Speaker 15: I thought Jackson Rose came in silenced him pretty quick.
- 15:28Speaker 15: I thought he was outstanding. You know, we we were
- 15:32Speaker 15: joking before the game today, like, man, we need to
- 15:33Speaker 15: have one of those games where we get like fifteen
- 15:35Speaker 15: hits and score some runs. So thankfully that happened. I
- 15:39Speaker 15: thought our guys, you know, were ready. I felt like
- 15:43Speaker 15: they were going after it. We talked about being in
- 15:46Speaker 15: the moment, not counting out and just playing like a
- 15:49Speaker 15: little leaguer and having having a blast doing so, and
- 15:52Speaker 15: how can you not. I mean, this is unbelieved. Where
- 15:55Speaker 15: at the College World Series we talk about as an
- 15:57Speaker 15: honor and a privilege to where our uniform you verusity
- 16:00Speaker 15: in North Carolina, but is also an honor and privilege
- 16:02Speaker 15: to be here playing on that field. I want our
- 16:04Speaker 15: guys to feel that and play with joy and have
- 16:06Speaker 15: a blast playing together. So they did that. Uh, and
- 16:11Speaker 15: and the fact that they did that. Obviously we had
- 16:13Speaker 15: one bad inning, But I don't care about that bad inning.
- 16:15Speaker 15: I could care less. We're playing in a national championship
- 16:18Speaker 15: and I'm excited for these guys and I'll just keep
- 16:21Speaker 15: jumping on their backs and watch them when we start
- 16:23Speaker 15: playing on Saturday.
- 16:24Speaker 8: Open it up the questions for the student athletes.
- 16:27Speaker 16: Mariolbonam Tory Hill Tribute and Gavin, can you talk about
- 16:31Speaker 16: the squide up switch.
- 16:32Speaker 7: It's seemed to work out pretty well for both of you.
- 16:35Speaker 17: Yeah. I don't really know, to be honest with you.
- 16:40Speaker 17: I think that it's a matchup thing at a righty
- 16:42Speaker 17: start on the mound. But yeah, that's a question for him.
- 16:46Speaker 17: You know, he just he does what he feels is right,
- 16:49Speaker 17: and today it worked out.
- 16:50Speaker 18: Remark in the second round, Mark Cron just baseball a
- 16:55Speaker 18: media Jackson tell us a little bit what it means
- 16:57Speaker 18: to be able to go out there and tell the
- 16:58Speaker 18: rubber for these guys and then have perfect defense behind you,
- 17:01Speaker 18: and how confident that makes you to go out there
- 17:02Speaker 18: and pitch pitches.
- 17:03Speaker 19: I mean, no, it's great, like being able to pitch
- 17:05Speaker 19: out here as a freshman and be able to wear Carolina.
- 17:09Speaker 19: It's like a dream to be honest, and then playing
- 17:13Speaker 19: with these guys in the field. You know, you know,
- 17:14Speaker 19: if you get ahead, you don't got to worry about
- 17:16Speaker 19: the defensive side.
- 17:18Speaker 8: And it's awesome.
- 17:22Speaker 20: No, what be Nick eleven point seven question for Owen
- 17:25Speaker 20: and Gavin. You guys as a lineup today as a
- 17:28Speaker 20: whole we're raking, but especially at the top of the order.
- 17:31Speaker 20: What was kind of your scouting reportant game plan against
- 17:33Speaker 20: both Chance and Colony and Corn That duo has been
- 17:36Speaker 20: super tough for most teams throughout the year.
- 17:38Speaker 21: Scouting reports the secret, but as a lineup as a whole,
- 17:41Speaker 21: we try to stick to the process of not letting
- 17:43Speaker 21: our bats carry into each other. The first thing coach
- 17:47Speaker 21: told us in our pregame meeting out an outfield was
- 17:51Speaker 21: that we want our compete factor at the top, and
- 17:54Speaker 21: that's what we focused on and being default aggressive. So
- 17:57Speaker 21: those are the two things that we really focus on
- 17:58Speaker 21: today and I think it worked.
- 17:59Speaker 8: Out pre Will.
- 18:04Speaker 16: Those are high school inside Carolin and for Gavin, you're
- 18:06Speaker 16: a guy that's been here for for three years. You've
- 18:08Speaker 16: experienced the ups and the downs that you know the
- 18:10Speaker 16: postseason can bring. What does it mean to you know,
- 18:12Speaker 16: be able to play for a national championship come Saturday.
- 18:16Speaker 17: I still think it really hasn't said in yet. You know,
- 18:20Speaker 17: after the game, shook hands and just kind of walking around,
- 18:23Speaker 17: looking up in the stands, uh, you know, looking at
- 18:25Speaker 17: my family and just kind of like just kind of speechless,
- 18:29Speaker 17: to be honest. You know, we were here in twenty four,
- 18:33Speaker 17: ran into two good teams, came close, and then last
- 18:37Speaker 17: year where you know, one one inning away from being
- 18:41Speaker 17: in Omaha again and so that really hurt. So to
- 18:45Speaker 17: be back here, win our first three games, being a
- 18:48Speaker 17: national championship, it's something that I mean, it's it's truly amazing.
- 18:53Speaker 22: Right EL College Baseball Central coach. You mentioned the six
- 18:56Speaker 22: run but first time since seven have you seen any
- 19:00Speaker 22: similarities from those O six seven teams?
- 19:03Speaker 15: A lot yeah, togetherness, Uh. That O six team, they
- 19:08Speaker 15: loved each other. They had a lot of fun together.
- 19:11Speaker 15: This team's the same.
- 19:12Speaker 23: You know.
- 19:12Speaker 15: I picked up on that. They're a tough group. They
- 19:16Speaker 15: want to win. Uh they put winning first over everything else.
- 19:20Speaker 15: And that team did that. So there's a ton of similarities.
- 19:23Speaker 15: I can't wait to text back the O six text
- 19:26Speaker 15: change group that I'll get and there'll be some hilarious texts.
- 19:30Speaker 15: But uh, you know, that's why you coach. But they
- 19:31Speaker 15: do have a lot of similarities, built similar type teams,
- 19:35Speaker 15: and uh, you know, I'm glad that I was there
- 19:38Speaker 15: and can look back on that and hopefully use that
- 19:41Speaker 15: to help us a little bit.
- 19:44Speaker 12: Uh.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Yeah, players had to ask you, so what about the
- 19:47Speaker 2: lineup switches and dropping make into the eight hole?
- 19:51Speaker 7: Gavin seemed to unlock something with that switch.
- 19:55Speaker 15: Yeah, Scott Jackson, Uh, I mean that's why I changed lineup.
- 20:00Speaker 15: I got a text I'd already made the lineup last night.
- 20:02Speaker 15: I've done all my prep. I dug in pretty hard,
- 20:07Speaker 15: but I telling them to dig in a little bit more.
- 20:08Speaker 15: He must have dug in more this morning. Got a
- 20:10Speaker 15: text me Him and WIRs just text each other about
- 20:12Speaker 15: the lineup. We have a three way text. He said,
- 20:14Speaker 15: I really think we might want to consider this because
- 20:16Speaker 15: of how good the starter and korn who we thought
- 20:19Speaker 15: we would go. We would see one two have been
- 20:22Speaker 15: against right handed hitters and they thought it was a
- 20:24Speaker 15: really tough at bat, so we wanted to try to
- 20:26Speaker 15: pressure them more. So eventually I just said, all right,
- 20:30Speaker 15: they we're going back and forth with a bunch of
- 20:31Speaker 15: different lineups. I said, just send me the daggum lineup
- 20:34Speaker 15: and I'm going to write whatever you guys tell me.
- 20:36Speaker 15: So it is a credit to Scott Jackson and Jesse.
- 20:38Speaker 15: Where's Vickie?
- 20:43Speaker 24: No?
- 20:43Speaker 22: What Darling CBC coach saw used top by Jr's bench
- 20:45Speaker 22: this morning?
- 20:46Speaker 8: How does his name continue to live on in this program?
- 20:48Speaker 12: Yeah?
- 20:49Speaker 15: Man, his family's here. You know, the older you get,
- 20:53Speaker 15: you get a lot more perspective. You try to help
- 20:56Speaker 15: your players have perspective while we do a lot of things,
- 20:58Speaker 15: you know, community service to the hospital, Miracle League. But
- 21:03Speaker 15: I told Jayr's parents, you know, a couple of years
- 21:05Speaker 15: ago when we lost him, that I know it seems
- 21:08Speaker 15: like that he was affected the most, but he affected
- 21:13Speaker 15: the players the most. And uh, you know, he was
- 21:17Speaker 15: just a member of our team and miss him dearly,
- 21:20Speaker 15: but UH got a picture by his bench yesterday, Me,
- 21:24Speaker 15: Mandy hen and Ally went by it, and uh, you know,
- 21:27Speaker 15: I'm just thankful that I got to know j R.
- 21:29Speaker 15: And the fact that he lived life like you did.
- 21:33Speaker 15: And I can see that big smile. He'd be so
- 21:35Speaker 15: excited right now, but I know he's excited looking down
- 21:37Speaker 15: on us.
- 21:40Speaker 25: Tommy Ashley inside Carolina coach, obviously started folder Today Jackson
- 21:45Speaker 25: comes in. How much of that decision went into what
- 21:47Speaker 25: guys are comfortable doing? We've talked about it a lot
- 21:50Speaker 25: this season, starting versus relieving.
- 21:52Speaker 15: Yeah, you know, I felt great about foger Bows. You know,
- 21:55Speaker 15: when you have a deep bullpen, and as a head coach,
- 21:58Speaker 15: if you see something that you don't like and you
- 22:00Speaker 15: feel like it's a key part of the game, it
- 22:02Speaker 15: just is what it is and it's never personal and
- 22:04Speaker 15: our players know it's not personal. And I thought he
- 22:07Speaker 15: had good stuff, but I had to pitch come in.
- 22:08Speaker 15: I know where the pitchers are called. You know, I
- 22:11Speaker 15: just felt like we need to make a change right there.
- 22:13Speaker 15: But with that did go into the thought process. You know,
- 22:15Speaker 15: we thought, Okay, we can piece this thing together. We
- 22:18Speaker 15: don't need Fodger Boez to go five innings. You know,
- 22:22Speaker 15: maybe one time through the lineup, maybe get us into
- 22:24Speaker 15: the fourth. But again, every out is vital, and that
- 22:29Speaker 15: was a hard game to win. They made a run
- 22:30Speaker 15: at us. We didn't make a couple of plays, uh,
- 22:33Speaker 15: And I told folder, hey, you still got us three outs, man,
- 22:35Speaker 15: so so keep your confidence. He's gonna have to pitch
- 22:37Speaker 15: for us to win this national championship. But it definitely
- 22:41Speaker 15: we light rose coming in the out of the bullpen,
- 22:42Speaker 15: if at all possible.
- 22:46Speaker 26: Mit Sherman, the athletic coach. Following up on the answer
- 22:50Speaker 26: about the six team and seven when you came back
- 22:55Speaker 26: to Carolina at that time as the pitching coach, can
- 22:58Speaker 26: you come out on what your perspective was about having
- 23:02Speaker 26: the opportunity to play for a national championship in those
- 23:04Speaker 26: two years versus what it is almost twenty years later,
- 23:08Speaker 26: having waited all this time.
- 23:09Speaker 15: Yeah, you know, I'm trying not to get emotional up
- 23:12Speaker 15: here because just thinking about that team and Coach Foss
- 23:15Speaker 15: giving me the opportunity to get back here. You know,
- 23:18Speaker 15: I wasn't in the popular hire at the time. There
- 23:21Speaker 15: were a lot bigger names. I'd never been a pitching coach.
- 23:24Speaker 15: But Coach Fox saw something to me and gave me
- 23:26Speaker 15: that opportunity. And you know, I'm not the smartest guy
- 23:29Speaker 15: in the room, but I realized pretty quickly after being
- 23:32Speaker 15: there and watching bullpens for probably three days, that the
- 23:36Speaker 15: best thing I can do for this team is the
- 23:37Speaker 15: pitching coach is maybe to instill some confidence, because when
- 23:40Speaker 15: you're rolling Andrew Miller, Daniel Bard, Robert Woodard, Andrew Kerrigh
- 23:44Speaker 15: and Matt Danford, Jonathan Hovis, you got to have some
- 23:47Speaker 15: feel and just get the heck out of the way.
- 23:49Speaker 15: So that's what I tried to do. And you know,
- 23:52Speaker 15: I owe that the whole team. I tell them all
- 23:56Speaker 15: the time. I owe them my career because those pitchers,
- 24:00Speaker 15: as you talk about Andrew Miller, I mean, he's a
- 24:02Speaker 15: Daniel Barter, two of the top prospects in the country,
- 24:04Speaker 15: and they got a guy coming in there's never been
- 24:06Speaker 15: a pitching coach and they didn't.
- 24:07Speaker 7: Act like that.
- 24:08Speaker 15: Robert Woodard as well, all those guys they took me in.
- 24:11Speaker 15: I learned more from them that first year, you know.
- 24:14Speaker 15: So I always tell them like, man like, just thank
- 24:17Speaker 15: you for you guys for believing in me, because I
- 24:19Speaker 15: honestly had no idea what I was doing. I was
- 24:22Speaker 15: around Roger Wiams, a great pitching coach, but I was
- 24:24Speaker 15: a catcher, and I felt like I could call a
- 24:26Speaker 15: decent game when it came mechanics and all that stuff.
- 24:28Speaker 15: I just started reading books and then trying to be
- 24:31Speaker 15: quiet and I say anything to those guys because they
- 24:32Speaker 15: were so talented.
- 24:35Speaker 8: Joe Healy, do you won baseball?
- 24:37Speaker 26: How important was it to get this done and win
- 24:39Speaker 26: your bracket in three and O fashion is supposed to
- 24:41Speaker 26: mess around with you if necessary.
- 24:43Speaker 25: Game.
- 24:43Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean that's the goal. I told the coaches today,
- 24:46Speaker 15: said listen, you know I'm going for it, and if
- 24:49Speaker 15: we have a chance to win this game, the only
- 24:52Speaker 15: guy and that was still debatable in my mind. I
- 24:56Speaker 15: told to Caro, like, if I tell you to put
- 24:57Speaker 15: your spikes on, you know what that means, because I
- 25:00Speaker 15: know how hard it is to win a game. You
- 25:02Speaker 15: get a big lead like that and you want those
- 25:04Speaker 15: two days if you can get them, doesn't guarantee that
- 25:07Speaker 15: you're going to win, but you have a pitching staff
- 25:09Speaker 15: like ours, if you can recover and you can get
- 25:12Speaker 15: tomorrow and to also get a lift in it's Funny
- 25:14Speaker 15: you said that because my wife was we were talking
- 25:16Speaker 15: about being in Omahan. She remembers the first year very much.
- 25:19Speaker 15: We had some off days, and she also remembers O
- 25:21Speaker 15: seven because we lost and it just felt like we
- 25:23Speaker 15: were playing every single day to get back to the
- 25:25Speaker 15: National championship. So you want to recover, you want to
- 25:27Speaker 15: have a little bit of rest. The guys use these
- 25:29Speaker 15: last two days really well. They're focused, you know, and
- 25:33Speaker 15: I've already done it. You know. I believe that we
- 25:35Speaker 15: were going to win today, and we have a plan
- 25:37Speaker 15: and we'll stay with that plan the next two days
- 25:39Speaker 15: to be ready to play Saturday.
- 25:40Speaker 23: I have time for just one more question, Rod Bexley
- 25:43Speaker 23: fee will observer the Scott This offense has been pretty
- 25:46Speaker 23: dog on good all year, but how do you describe
- 25:49Speaker 23: what you saw from them today?
- 25:51Speaker 15: You know, I agree with that, and they don't get
- 25:54Speaker 15: any credit.
- 25:54Speaker 1: You know.
- 25:54Speaker 15: Every question is about the pitching staff, and I hope
- 25:57Speaker 15: that's the case, and I hope it keeps being the
- 25:58Speaker 15: case because they play with an edge and I use
- 26:01Speaker 15: that as much as I possibly can.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Uh.
- 26:04Speaker 15: But you know, you look at a guy like Carter
- 26:05Speaker 15: French steps up there, he's got to be the best
- 26:07Speaker 15: two forty hitter in the country in my opinion, gets
- 26:09Speaker 15: on base, he rolls the line up over. He's not scared.
- 26:12Speaker 15: And we've had some guys struggling, but it's been to
- 26:14Speaker 15: me the common theme on this team is obviously Owen's
- 26:18Speaker 15: been Owen. We've had some guys that have been unbelievable,
- 26:21Speaker 15: but we've had different guys step up in big moments.
- 26:24Speaker 15: You just look at our RBI's you know, a lot
- 26:26Speaker 15: of guys are getting close to sixty distributed, distributed throughout
- 26:29Speaker 15: the order. And then you got Tyler Howe, who he
- 26:32Speaker 15: doesn't he has at least about RBIs besides French, but
- 26:34Speaker 15: he still gets big, big hits and gets on base
- 26:37Speaker 15: and then he scores. So I think there's length to it.
- 26:40Speaker 15: I also think a guy we got some other guys
- 26:42Speaker 15: that did not get at bats these three games, but
- 26:46Speaker 15: I got a hunch that they're gonna come up big
- 26:48Speaker 15: for us and they'll be ready.
- 26:50Speaker 8: That marks the end of this press conference.
- 26:52Speaker 23: Coach, We appreciate your time, and a reminder that we'll
- 26:54Speaker 23: have a pre finals press conference as well.
- 26:56Speaker 1: All right, that's North Carolina. That Scott Forbes, Gavin Gallaher
- 27:02Speaker 1: Owen Hall and pitcher Jackson Rose and one of the
- 27:08Speaker 1: great moments of the year in sports. If you haven't
- 27:15Speaker 1: seen it, you can google it. Don't do it right now.
- 27:17Speaker 1: I'm talking Kolby Branch hit a home run for last
- 27:27Speaker 1: night when Oklahoma is playing Georgia and he had a
- 27:36Speaker 1: home run in his final collegiate at bat. He was
- 27:40Speaker 1: pretty much in tears by the time he got to
- 27:42Speaker 1: home played it into the dugout because he knew his
- 27:45Speaker 1: team was losing. They were way behind. His brother, Kyle,
- 27:49Speaker 1: plays on Oklahoma. The camera caught Kyle looking up over
- 27:53Speaker 1: his head at second base and watching his brother's ball
- 27:57Speaker 1: go into the stands and smiling and then slapping hands
- 28:01Speaker 1: as his brother rounded second base. That was cool, I
- 28:08Speaker 1: mean that was And then of course que the parents
- 28:12Speaker 1: sitting in the stand and the mom just bawling trying
- 28:16Speaker 1: to get all this on cell phone video, and I
- 28:20Speaker 1: don't think she got much. I'll be honest with you,
- 28:22Speaker 1: I'm not sure how the quality was of that, but
- 28:27Speaker 1: that was such a cool moment last night. So when
- 28:32Speaker 1: I get through, write yourself a note, pull it up
- 28:37Speaker 1: and watch the brothers, Colby and Kyle Branch sharing a
- 28:43Speaker 1: high five as Colby round second base where Kyle is
- 28:48Speaker 1: playing defense for the Sooners. That was awesome. North Carolina
- 28:57Speaker 1: they're gonna be a handful. But guess what sos you
- 29:01Speaker 1: talk about a heater? What do we say about tournament play?
- 29:05Speaker 1: We say it during basketball, we say it in all sports.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Sometimes the best team doesn't win, only the team that's
- 29:19Speaker 1: playing the best at the right time. Oklahoma, for sure,
- 29:25Speaker 1: has not been the best team in college baseball this year,
- 29:31Speaker 1: but right now they look like they are. We'll see
- 29:37Speaker 1: what they do with North Carolina in the best two
- 29:40Speaker 1: of three beginning Saturday night. But my gosh, they are
- 29:45Speaker 1: on a heater and they haven't stopped. It started when
- 29:49Speaker 1: they trailed eight to two to Georgia Tech in an
- 29:56Speaker 1: elimination game, the number two overall seed. They came back,
- 30:03Speaker 1: they win, They win the next day, I think in
- 30:07Speaker 1: walk off fashion. And it's just been no stopping Oklahoma
- 30:14Speaker 1: right now. So when we come back, we're going to
- 30:17Speaker 1: hear from the Sooners, and then we're going to talk
- 30:22Speaker 1: about one night in Cleveland. Sounds like an opera, right, Galeria, ladies,
- 30:33Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk to you for a minute. Most time
- 30:36Speaker 1: I talk to the men but I know there's a
- 30:38Speaker 1: few of you out there, and Father's Day is Sunday.
- 30:42Speaker 1: If you want to get Dad something unique, how about
- 30:44Speaker 1: a massage. You can either throw in a couple's massage
- 30:50Speaker 1: from Galleria and.
- 30:54Speaker 8: He'll like that.
- 30:55Speaker 1: I promise. There's a barbershop at the Galleria at Century
- 31:03Speaker 1: Square and the haircare for the ladies and boutique and

- 33:26Speaker 12: the Foolish Green.
- 33:28Speaker 14: Is keeping This is song McCartney wrote after visiting the
- 33:32Speaker 14: Maharishi Yogi in India, now full on the hill, Welcome back.
- 33:41Speaker 1: We're celebrating Sir Paul's eighty fourth birthday today on the show,
- 33:46Speaker 1: Talk a Little College Baseball, College World Series Baseball in
- 33:50Speaker 1: the second hour of the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition. A
- 33:54Speaker 1: lot of good stories today, and talk to a guy
- 33:58Speaker 1: who is tagging marlins and following them and trying to
- 34:03Speaker 1: figure out patterns because nobody's done that before. We're gonna
- 34:09Speaker 1: hear from Oklahoma baseball coach Skip Johnson along with Xander Mercurius,
- 34:18Speaker 1: one of the brothers who pitched for the Suitors, and
- 34:22Speaker 1: Jason Willitts post game after their win over Georgia.
- 34:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:29Speaker 4: I thought Xander went out and was really calm in
- 34:31Speaker 4: the first thing. He made some really good pitches. We
- 34:33Speaker 4: come in and big hit to start the game, and
- 34:39Speaker 4: then another moving the guy trying to move a guy over,
- 34:42Speaker 4: hit by pitch, and Dayton and I don't know what
- 34:46Speaker 4: happened to get second third and hits groundball short, I believe,
- 34:50Speaker 4: And then Jackson got a big hit and it really
- 34:52Speaker 4: settled Xander down where he can just pitch and make
- 34:55Speaker 4: it one pitch at a time, and the momentum kind
- 34:58Speaker 4: of shifted there a little bit. They had a big
- 35:01Speaker 4: home run, had another big home run. Really tough lineup,
- 35:05Speaker 4: really hard to navigate through that lineup. It's really deep,
- 35:09Speaker 4: of course. I mean they're a really good team, and
- 35:12Speaker 4: it shows you what kind of character and what kind
- 35:16Speaker 4: of warrior. I don't know how to say his name,
- 35:19Speaker 4: kayden Is Oki. I mean he stayed in the game.
- 35:22Speaker 4: I mean that shows you a lot. When he throws
- 35:25Speaker 4: thirty one, maybe thirty one pitches in the first it
- 35:27Speaker 4: shows you what he was really about. And I mean
- 35:31Speaker 4: you could tell the guy he's war ridden and pitching
- 35:35Speaker 4: some big games, really calm making pitches. And I'm really
- 35:38Speaker 4: just proud of our team for getting some big hits
- 35:41Speaker 4: at sometimes at the right time, and Xander really throwing
- 35:44Speaker 4: in Cleveland, coming in and is trusting the process and
- 35:48Speaker 4: taking it one pitch at a time, and really proud
- 35:50Speaker 4: of these guys.
- 35:51Speaker 8: We're gonna opening up to questions for the student athletes.
- 35:56Speaker 30: Aaron Fitt, you and baseball Xander, Well, your fourth start
- 35:59Speaker 30: of the year, You're right, You're in the College World Series.
- 36:02Speaker 30: You just shut down probably the best offense in the country.
- 36:04Speaker 30: I mean, what has enabled you to pitch your best
- 36:08Speaker 30: at this time of the year. This day is like
- 36:10Speaker 30: how how have you been able to make this leap
- 36:11Speaker 30: that you've made down the stretch?
- 36:14Speaker 31: The guy sending right next to me, Skip Johnson, He's
- 36:18Speaker 31: been great, you know. He's been helping me every single day,
- 36:22Speaker 31: just becoming better, you know, And that's all I can do.
- 36:24Speaker 31: And that's all I can help or can ask for
- 36:27Speaker 31: my teammates putting up runs into first hitting, you know,
- 36:29Speaker 31: helping me out and just can't can't do out my teammates,
- 36:33Speaker 31: you know.
- 36:36Speaker 22: Android ol College for as well, Central Jackson. You had
- 36:39Speaker 22: success against kan tonight. What were you seeing out of
- 36:42Speaker 22: the hand against him?
- 36:44Speaker 32: Yeah, I mean we had a really good approach going
- 36:46Speaker 32: into the game from both both of our hitting coaches,
- 36:49Speaker 32: and I feel like we had a really good sense
- 36:51Speaker 32: of what he liked to use and what counts. And
- 36:53Speaker 32: then I think all three of my hits were in
- 36:54Speaker 32: two strike counts, So I feel like I was really
- 36:57Speaker 32: good in my two strike approach, really able to back
- 36:59Speaker 32: the ball up and just stay consistent with that line
- 37:01Speaker 32: drive of the middle approach, and I feel like I
- 37:02Speaker 32: was able to have some success against all three of
- 37:05Speaker 32: his pitches.
- 37:09Speaker 33: Eddieward, Dodswitch Studer, scoop dot commsator. What was the conversation
- 37:12Speaker 33: like in between the seventh and eighth to go back
- 37:13Speaker 33: out there? Did you have to talk your way into
- 37:16Speaker 33: getting back out there? And what was the ninth inning like?
- 37:18Speaker 33: Just watching Jackson work with the traffic that he had there, all.
- 37:21Speaker 8: I said was.
- 37:25Speaker 31: Just kept pounding my chest, you know, just telling him
- 37:27Speaker 31: I'm good, and you know, I honestly felt amazing. I mean,
- 37:30Speaker 31: I guess I heard my velo dropped at the end,
- 37:33Speaker 31: but I mean I felt amazing. You know, I just
- 37:35Speaker 31: kept pitching with conviction and just trusted all my stuff.
- 37:39Speaker 31: What was the ninth In the ninth inning, it was great.
- 37:41Speaker 31: I mean I was top top step, you know, just
- 37:44Speaker 31: watching Clean do his work, keep talking to him, keep
- 37:48Speaker 31: just getting start, you know, just help him out, you know,
- 37:51Speaker 31: give him some synergy and just watching him pitch.
- 37:54Speaker 8: Go do what he's doing, Go do go, do what
- 37:56Speaker 8: he does.
- 38:00Speaker 34: Murray having sought in constitution for Jackson and as she
- 38:03Speaker 34: pointed to the sky as you were coming around third base,
- 38:05Speaker 34: did that have anything to do with your great grandfather?
- 38:08Speaker 24: Yeah?
- 38:08Speaker 32: I mean I was Honestly, I'm just trying to give
- 38:10Speaker 32: all glory to God, and I'm out there on the
- 38:12Speaker 32: baseball field. I'm not playing for myself or playing for
- 38:16Speaker 32: anyone on this earth. Honestly, I'm out there to glorify
- 38:19Speaker 32: the Lord and to play for him. And I feel
- 38:21Speaker 32: like he helped me do one of the hardest things
- 38:23Speaker 32: to do in sports in the first inning, and I
- 38:25Speaker 32: just wanted to say thank you and to give all
- 38:27Speaker 32: glory to him.
- 38:31Speaker 34: Jackson kind of all up on a question that was
- 38:33Speaker 34: just asked hisander about, you know, Cleveland and the eighth
- 38:36Speaker 34: and ninth and how he kind of gritted through those
- 38:38Speaker 34: two innings and you know, ends with getting the best
- 38:41Speaker 34: hitter in the country out to kind of win that game.
- 38:43Speaker 34: What was kind of your reaction and what were you
- 38:44Speaker 34: kind of I mean, there was a lot of talk,
- 38:47Speaker 34: you know, as he turned around and did stuff, so
- 38:48Speaker 34: curious what the conversation was there.
- 38:51Speaker 32: Yeah, I mean, I'm out there at short so just
- 38:54Speaker 32: trying to make those guys calm down because I know
- 38:55Speaker 32: they get amped up. I know they want to make pitches,
- 38:57Speaker 32: they want to throw at ninety six miles an hour,
- 38:59Speaker 32: and I feel like when they look back at me
- 39:01Speaker 32: for that two seconds. They need to see somebody that's
- 39:02Speaker 32: calm and collected, and no matter how big of a
- 39:04Speaker 32: situation is, they need to see somebody that's focused on
- 39:07Speaker 32: the next pitch.
- 39:07Speaker 8: And that's kind of my thing.
- 39:08Speaker 32: I tried to relate to them, and that's what I
- 39:10Speaker 32: tried to relate to him in Cleveland all night. Was
- 39:11Speaker 32: just like Breed, this pitch is all that matters. It
- 39:14Speaker 32: doesn't matter like he thought he punched a guy out.
- 39:15Speaker 32: That doesn't matter anymore. Just breathe and execute this pitch.
- 39:21Speaker 16: Yeah, for Xander and Jackson, what does it mean for
- 39:22Speaker 16: you guys to leave the field and you see Brent
- 39:25Speaker 16: Ventables and all the other OU coaches traveled up here
- 39:28Speaker 16: to support you guys.
- 39:29Speaker 8: I mean, okay, just shows a support that OU has.
- 39:32Speaker 8: You know, we're a family.
- 39:33Speaker 31: We stick that as a team, and we stick to
- 39:35Speaker 31: it as a program, and we stick to it as
- 39:36Speaker 31: a school. You know, OU is a great school, and
- 39:40Speaker 31: all of our sports stick together.
- 39:41Speaker 8: You know, we're all athletes.
- 39:42Speaker 31: You know, we all go through the same struggles and
- 39:45Speaker 31: we're just we're just happy to have coaches on the
- 39:48Speaker 31: other coach other sports be here and giving us some
- 39:52Speaker 31: synergy and love.
- 39:55Speaker 32: Yeah, yeah, it was. It was pretty cool to see
- 39:57Speaker 32: all those guys come out and support us. And I mean,
- 40:01Speaker 32: Brent talked to us for a second, and I'm gonna
- 40:03Speaker 32: be honest, he had me be ready to go play linebacker,
- 40:05Speaker 32: ready to run through a wall.
- 40:06Speaker 22: So he's pretty good at.
- 40:07Speaker 32: What he does.
- 40:10Speaker 35: Josh kellis sooner as Ilsra Jackson. Ovis, You're a guy
- 40:13Speaker 35: you stepped right in as a freshman a couple of
- 40:14Speaker 35: years ago played a big role. Are you able to
- 40:17Speaker 35: put into context what Xander has done and core these
- 40:20Speaker 35: guys stepping right in on the man? Different craft, but
- 40:22Speaker 35: I'm sure you can appreciate what they've done as true freshman.
- 40:25Speaker 32: Y're in Omah, Yeah, I mean it's tough. As a freshman.
- 40:28Speaker 32: You come in and it's a big jump, one of
- 40:29Speaker 32: the biggest jumps in sports from high school baseball to
- 40:31Speaker 32: college baseball. And I feel like a lot of people
- 40:33Speaker 32: don't really realize that, but especially for them to do
- 40:35Speaker 32: in the SEC this year, it's really tough. So to
- 40:37Speaker 32: be able to just kind of take it one day
- 40:39Speaker 32: at a time, one pitch at a time, and to
- 40:41Speaker 32: be able to slow everything down and realize that all
- 40:43Speaker 32: that matters is the task at hand. I feel like
- 40:44Speaker 32: they've done a really good job at that and because
- 40:46Speaker 32: of that, they've had a lot of success.
- 40:48Speaker 8: Taken one more for the student athletes.
- 40:51Speaker 36: Nick Havko cosways on Insiders, this can be for you,
- 40:54Speaker 36: either of you. That pickoff play. I'm seeing to take
- 40:56Speaker 36: away a lot about mentam from George in the middle
- 40:58Speaker 36: of the game. Was that something that was pre playing
- 41:00Speaker 36: before the games? It seemed like does a scouting report
- 41:02Speaker 36: thing or is that something just in the.
- 41:03Speaker 8: Moment, I'll get it.
- 41:06Speaker 32: I mean, I feel like I kind of saw the
- 41:09Speaker 32: way he was taking his lead and the first pitch
- 41:11Speaker 32: he was on second, he was kind of he was
- 41:12Speaker 32: doing a five step leading on his fifth step, he
- 41:14Speaker 32: still had his chest facing third and he went, oh one.
- 41:17Speaker 32: So I'm like, well, I'm not going to do it
- 41:18Speaker 32: with an O one count, but if he throws a
- 41:20Speaker 32: ball here, we're gonna run a pick. And he threw
- 41:22Speaker 32: a change up in the dirt, and I'm like, man,
- 41:23Speaker 32: now's the time. Now was the opportunity. So we ran
- 41:25Speaker 32: a quick pick and I feel like all the times
- 41:27Speaker 32: that nobody wants to work on that in the fall
- 41:29Speaker 32: when it's one hundred degrees and everybody's complaining that we
- 41:31Speaker 32: have to do team defense for forty five minutes. Kind
- 41:33Speaker 32: of it all came together in that one play.
- 41:35Speaker 17: Amen.
- 41:36Speaker 18: Yeah, I want me to a coach. We talk a
- 41:38Speaker 18: lot about pitching and defense this time of the year.
- 41:40Speaker 18: That was one of the clean skims. If you guys
- 41:42Speaker 18: play all year anything, you would talk about the freshman
- 41:44Speaker 18: going out there and taking care of business for you.
- 41:46Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I really thought he staying to process
- 41:48Speaker 4: one pitch at a time. I mean, he executed pitches
- 41:50Speaker 4: when he had to execute pitches. I thought Dayton, I
- 41:53Speaker 4: mean did a great job. Would was switched back and
- 41:57Speaker 4: forth calling pitches and talking between innings and some of
- 42:01Speaker 4: the things that we're talking about. I mean, it was
- 42:03Speaker 4: really good that those guys behind him played really good defense.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Uh was huge. Matter of fact, I really thought that
- 42:12Speaker 4: uh us taking a momentum and keeping them momentum helped
- 42:17Speaker 4: a lot.
- 42:17Speaker 8: The big pickoff.
- 42:18Speaker 4: Just like what he's talked about, Sometimes it gets monotonous
- 42:22Speaker 4: in practice when you have to work on details, and
- 42:25Speaker 4: that was just a detail that they we work on,
- 42:28Speaker 4: and you know, sometimes it never works. Sometimes it works,
- 42:31Speaker 4: and it worked in which was in a big moment
- 42:33Speaker 4: which they wouldn't afraid to use it. That's that's the
- 42:36Speaker 4: thing that I was excited about. They wouldn't afraid to
- 42:39Speaker 4: use it. Most time people are afraid to do the
- 42:42Speaker 4: things that they practice. And and why do we practice?
- 42:45Speaker 4: I mean to have the courage.
- 42:48Speaker 8: To do that.
- 42:50Speaker 4: And he been sliding out there. You've been sliding out there?
- 42:55Speaker 4: Got it looked like you and slide and hey, good good.
- 43:04Speaker 37: It's the greatest press box on dirt, I think is yes,
- 43:06Speaker 37: ye Ken sagerettland adinal Constitution. I want to ask you
- 43:10Speaker 37: about two different moments. The top of the eighth win
- 43:13Speaker 37: hits that shot to write kind of what was going
- 43:15Speaker 37: to your mind? And then the last batter of the game,
- 43:18Speaker 37: you know, the player of the year, you can finish
- 43:20Speaker 37: it for them or put them in the lead. Kind
- 43:22Speaker 37: of what was went with your mind?
- 43:23Speaker 22: What was that feeling like?
- 43:24Speaker 4: Well, I just got through telling Britt I said to
- 43:29Speaker 4: tell yourself what you want to happen, not what you
- 43:31Speaker 4: want to happen. And you try to picture that you're
- 43:36Speaker 4: in the pitch with them. I mean, if you're a
- 43:37Speaker 4: pitching coach, you're in the pitch with them, and you
- 43:40Speaker 4: might not be pitching it. You try to use your
- 43:43Speaker 4: visualization to help you get through it too.
- 43:45Speaker 8: It might be weird for some people in here.
- 43:48Speaker 4: But that's what I do a lot. And really I
- 43:51Speaker 4: think Jesus, I mean really, I went to the mound
- 43:54Speaker 4: and with man on first and second, I said, hey, Jackson.
- 43:59Speaker 4: I know he's a real religious young man. I love
- 44:02Speaker 4: Jesus too, but I just said, hey, Man, he's with you.
- 44:05Speaker 4: This guy's hit balls on the pool side and he's
- 44:08Speaker 4: gonna hit maybe hitting the double playoff, trying to paint
- 44:10Speaker 4: a picture so he can visualize in his mind what
- 44:13Speaker 4: could happen an outcome. And I mean, Jackson's a really
- 44:17Speaker 4: good player. I mean, you can tell he is the
- 44:20Speaker 4: player of the year. There's no doubt about that. And
- 44:24Speaker 4: that's why it's called baseball.
- 44:25Speaker 25: You know.
- 44:26Speaker 4: He missed a pitch and popped it straight up, just
- 44:27Speaker 4: missed it. He could have hit it nine miles like
- 44:30Speaker 4: he hit the other one. And I'm glad that it happened,
- 44:34Speaker 4: you know, and really proud of our guys for having
- 44:37Speaker 4: the courage to execute the pitch. It's the guy that's
- 44:41Speaker 4: willing to fail in a moment, that had the courage
- 44:44Speaker 4: to fail.
- 44:45Speaker 8: That ends up succeeding in a game.
- 44:48Speaker 4: I don't know what it is about the spirit of baseball,
- 44:50Speaker 4: but that's what happens.
- 44:52Speaker 38: And the wind shot that you have a sense that
- 44:55Speaker 38: might go far.
- 44:56Speaker 8: Or no, I didn't.
- 44:57Speaker 4: I had no clue if it would go that far out.
- 45:00Speaker 4: All I knew was the ball was jumping out. I
- 45:02Speaker 4: don't know if if the wind was blown out when
- 45:04Speaker 4: it started, or they putting new baseballs or we had
- 45:06Speaker 4: new bats. I mean, the balls are jumping out of
- 45:08Speaker 4: there today. I hadn't seen that part play like that
- 45:11Speaker 4: since I've been I mean I only been here three times.
- 45:13Speaker 4: I haven't never seen it play like that, And it
- 45:17Speaker 4: was a pretty surreal moment.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Skip Johnson, who coached for Aggy throwing a little Augie

- 49:01Speaker 12: I just had to man. I saw the pontograph He
- 49:14Speaker 12: is Mine loud.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Co written by Leonard and McCartney, two songs put together,
- 49:20Speaker 1: frankly one of the great ones. Welcome back, thanks for
- 49:26Speaker 1: being with us here. On a Thursday, June fourth, nineteen
- 49:32Speaker 1: seventy four, fifty two years ago, a night that ended
- 49:39Speaker 1: in a riot at old Cleveland Stadium. The Cleveland Indians
- 49:44Speaker 1: organized a promotion to boost attendance. Twice as many fans
- 49:51Speaker 1: as usual showed up four ten cent Beer Night. Ten
- 50:02Speaker 1: cent beer Night. You could only purchase six beers at
- 50:07Speaker 1: a time, but could come back as often as you wanted.
- 50:14Speaker 1: There had been a bench clearing brawl between the Indians
- 50:17Speaker 1: and the Rangers six days earlier, and the fans were
- 50:21Speaker 1: already a little peeved. The crowd became increasingly intoxicated and unruly.
- 50:30Speaker 1: We are going to hear from mister Ranger Tom Greeve,
- 50:33Speaker 1: who was on the field that night. What is your
- 50:38Speaker 1: what kind of snapshot memory of that wild night when
- 50:42Speaker 1: you think back forty years?
- 50:43Speaker 2: Well, you know, it all comes to life almost every
- 50:47Speaker 2: year on the anniversary of that day. I've been talking
- 50:50Speaker 2: about this for forty years, and I guess this is
- 50:52Speaker 2: the fortieth anniversary.
- 50:53Speaker 7: But pretty much everything it started as a crazy day.
- 50:58Speaker 7: You knew it was going to be crazy.
- 51:00Speaker 2: He went in about the second inning, about a three
- 51:02Speaker 2: hundred pound lady came on the field to try to
- 51:04Speaker 2: kiss Nestor Shylack the homeplate umpire, which was fine, that
- 51:08Speaker 2: was kind of vogue at the time. Problem was they
- 51:10Speaker 2: couldn't get her off the field, and they couldn't lift
- 51:12Speaker 2: her up the step to get her off the field,
- 51:14Speaker 2: and it.
- 51:14Speaker 7: Took about ten minutes.
- 51:16Speaker 2: A couple innings later, a father and a son jumped out,
- 51:19Speaker 2: went to second base and mooned everybody behind home plate,
- 51:22Speaker 2: sprinted across center field, and jumped over the fence. Various
- 51:26Speaker 2: other people were coming onto the field so and it
- 51:29Speaker 2: kind of was escalating. They were happening more often. So
- 51:31Speaker 2: he just had a feeling something was going to happen.
- 51:33Speaker 2: And we looked out to right field and a fan
- 51:36Speaker 2: had run behind Jeff Burrows and right field, and Jeff
- 51:38Speaker 2: didn't see the fan, and he reached up to grab
- 51:41Speaker 2: his hat to try to steal his hat and surprised Jeff.
- 51:44Speaker 2: And when Jeff felt the man's hand, he turned around
- 51:48Speaker 2: and colecocked the guy and down the guy went. And
- 51:51Speaker 2: that's when Billy Martin uttered the famous words, grab a bat, boys,
- 51:56Speaker 2: let's go get him, which sounds funny, but you know,
- 52:00Speaker 2: at the time, I was a designated hitter. I did
- 52:03Speaker 2: not grab a bat, but I ran out to the
- 52:05Speaker 2: field with probably ten or twelve players who did have bats.
- 52:10Speaker 7: No player swung a bat at a fan.
- 52:12Speaker 2: But as it escalated and there were a few skirmishes
- 52:16Speaker 2: here and there, what became obvious to the players.
- 52:18Speaker 7: There was thousands of people on the field and they
- 52:21Speaker 7: were all drunk, but they were all happy.
- 52:23Speaker 2: And as you reflect back on it, you think what
- 52:26Speaker 2: could have happened if it was a drunk crowd and
- 52:30Speaker 2: an angry crowd.
- 52:31Speaker 7: It helped to have the.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Indians players out there. Gaylord Perry was out there to
- 52:35Speaker 2: calm people down. But it could have been a tragic
- 52:38Speaker 2: night at the ballpark. Turned out to be something that
- 52:41Speaker 2: we reflect on with humor now. But fortunately nothing worse
- 52:45Speaker 2: than that happened.
- 52:47Speaker 1: So that was Tom Greeb twelve years ago talking about
- 52:50Speaker 1: the incident and estimated sixty thousand cups of beer or
- 52:57Speaker 1: consumed that night, sixty thousand cups of beer. There weren't
- 53:06Speaker 1: any more ten cent beer nights after the riot in
- 53:10Speaker 1: Cleveland on June fourth, nineteen seventy four, By the way,
- 53:16Speaker 1: chief umpire Nester Shylock declared the game a forfeit in
- 53:21Speaker 1: favor of the Rangers due to the uncontrollable mob. As
- 53:30Speaker 1: Greeb was describing at least two hundred drunk fans, storm
- 53:35Speaker 1: the field in the ninth and it became one of
- 53:41Speaker 1: the most chaotic promotions in baseball history. I don't know
- 53:47Speaker 1: who thought that was a good idea ten cent beer night.
- 53:50Speaker 1: Now you have to understand that in those days, a
- 53:57Speaker 1: twelve ounce cup of beer was sixty five cents, okay.
- 54:05Speaker 1: These days it's about thirteen dollars anywhere, but anywhere from
- 54:11Speaker 1: from eight to nine to thirteen dollars okay, So you
- 54:18Speaker 1: can still get drunk at a baseball game, but it's
- 54:22Speaker 1: going to cost you more than sixty cents plus. When
- 54:30Speaker 1: they remember Fomer Knights at the Astrodome, when an Astro
- 54:34Speaker 1: hit a home run, they had Fomer Nights. They had
- 54:37Speaker 1: all kinds of beer promotions in the past, but this one,
