- 0:00Speaker 1: Deja d s q charmey. It's one more thing.
- 0:06Speaker 2: I have no idea what that was, God bless you.
- 0:10Speaker 3: That was a Spanish probably obliterated Spanish.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Spanish speakers are like, no, it wasn't okay. I will
- 0:17Speaker 1: explain in moments.
- 0:19Speaker 2: So I just saw this from the Babylon be thought
- 0:21Speaker 2: it was funny. China retaliates against tariffs by putting worse
- 0:24Speaker 2: fortunes in the cookies. Boy, my kids and I get
- 0:29Speaker 2: a kick out of the fortunes and being angry about
- 0:32Speaker 2: the fact that's not a fortune. They usually aren't.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a statement of facts. Yeah, hard work will
- 0:41Speaker 3: lead to success.
- 0:42Speaker 1: That's not a fortune. This is an advice cookie cause.
- 0:48Speaker 4: You're getting in at Panda Express.
- 0:50Speaker 2: That's part of it.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Part of it.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Cut rate fortune cookies, please, I haven't been fortunes for years.
- 0:56Speaker 3: It's as if cookies can't foretell the future anymore. Hell So,
- 1:02Speaker 3: the Spanish phrase I unleashed deja desq charmi or something
- 1:07Speaker 3: like that means stop listening to me.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And here is why I said that.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I had the opportunity to be among Spanish speakers, fairly
- 1:20Speaker 3: close to them as they are conversing in Spanish.
- 1:24Speaker 2: What an interesting thing to say. I had the opportunity
- 1:28Speaker 2: to be among Spanish.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Speakers speakers, that's correct. Look you there are some gals
- 1:34Speaker 3: speaking Spanish next to me.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Would be another way to put that.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Less fancy anyway, And I was curious what they were
- 1:43Speaker 3: talking about because it was quite animated.
- 1:46Speaker 2: They're probably talking about you. Did you hear did you
- 1:48Speaker 2: hear el gordo?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Over and over?
- 1:50Speaker 3: I heard Caliente more than one? So yes, is a
- 1:57Speaker 3: hot burrito?
- 1:58Speaker 1: That one?
- 1:59Speaker 3: And so I turned on Google Translate. You did what
- 2:04Speaker 3: they're talking?
- 2:05Speaker 1: Is that cool? Is that eavesdropping?
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yes?
- 2:10Speaker 1: I was within earshot. They knew it, they could see me.
- 2:15Speaker 3: There was absolutely no expectation of privacy other than I
- 2:19Speaker 3: don't think the fat gringo speaks Spanish.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Let's talk.
- 2:22Speaker 2: If you're close enough to people that are speaking English
- 2:25Speaker 2: and they're talking loudly, you're not doing anything wrong.
- 2:28Speaker 1: But if judge you mcjudge lady.
- 2:30Speaker 2: If it's in a different language and I turn on
- 2:32Speaker 2: the translator, I feel like I've crossed some sort of line.
- 2:36Speaker 2: But I don't know why.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I see it as educational.
- 2:41Speaker 5: And see I'm not a hypocrite because the amount of
- 2:42Speaker 5: times I've thought about doing that while I'm getting my
- 2:44Speaker 5: nails done.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Oh unmatched, Wow, that'd be a good yeah.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 3: So it was funny because I thought, Okay, I gotta
- 2:56Speaker 3: be real cool about this, you know, make sure I'm
- 2:59Speaker 3: not what I'm doing here.
- 3:01Speaker 1: But then I thought, well, wait a minute, they're they're
- 3:03Speaker 1: right there talking.
- 3:05Speaker 3: If they were speaking English, I would know every nuance
- 3:08Speaker 3: of their.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Conversation, and they don't know that you can't speak Spanish, right,
- 3:13Speaker 2: Probably a decent guess, but yeah, I must expect.
- 3:19Speaker 3: I wonder is there a thing where, in a situation
- 3:23Speaker 3: like that, the Spanish speaker will throw something out then
- 3:25Speaker 3: glance over to see if you show any recognition.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I would do people do that.
- 3:31Speaker 2: I would just say something like, I don't know what
- 3:35Speaker 2: you would say, but.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I'm about to lift up my shirt and show you
- 3:40Speaker 1: my breasts.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Reaction. Yeah, okay, we can keep talking, we can say
- 3:46Speaker 2: whatever we want about this idiot.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah, So I don't seriously, does it seem untowar?
- 3:53Speaker 2: I think it does, but I if intellectually I don't
- 3:57Speaker 2: think it is. I'm untoward. It feels like you put
- 4:01Speaker 2: up yes listening device in their luggage or something, or
- 4:04Speaker 2: you follow them home, it feels it.
- 4:06Speaker 5: But the point you made with their having the conversation
- 4:09Speaker 5: right there, Yeah, no, who knows that you don't speak Espaniel?
- 4:14Speaker 3: Right, that's so funny that all of us reacted in
- 4:16Speaker 3: exactly the same way.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Oh you did, well, wait a minute.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Like you're hiding in the closet their bedroom or something.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Yeah, so do they say anything good or well?
- 4:27Speaker 3: See, that's the frustrating thing other than you know, like
- 4:31Speaker 3: fragments of sentences, because you know, unless you're gonna put
- 4:34Speaker 3: the phone right up to them, it's it doesn't pick
- 4:36Speaker 3: up that well. So no, it was just you know,
- 4:40Speaker 3: the sort of inane, not terribly interesting conversations most people.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Have all the time.
- 4:45Speaker 2: That's a funny idea satisfying I got to remember that.
- 4:49Speaker 5: See I saw a video of a guy doing this,
- 4:50Speaker 5: and I guess he had his phone on loud and
- 4:52Speaker 5: when you use the Google Translate, I guess it reads
- 4:55Speaker 5: it back to you what they were saying.
- 4:56Speaker 4: So all of a sudden it started.
- 4:59Speaker 2: It was busted, busted hearing somebody that's within earshot.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Yeah, right, good point.
- 5:08Speaker 3: There is no presumption of privacy because you speak a
- 5:11Speaker 3: fer in tongue. The Supreme Court said that in Gringo
- 5:16Speaker 3: Versus Non Gringo any eighteen fifty three.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Anybody who's listening to this podcast who this applies to
- 5:22Speaker 2: email us or textus, because I'd be interesting interested. I'm
- 5:26Speaker 2: not interesting. I would be interested if if you speak
- 5:31Speaker 2: Spanish or Russian or whatever your main language is, if
- 5:34Speaker 2: you get used to the idea, if you kind of
- 5:38Speaker 2: get like accustomed to the idea of we can kind
- 5:41Speaker 2: of talk in secret here out loud, I'll about you do.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I would, yes.
- 5:46Speaker 3: And I've known various folks who are fluent in a
- 5:48Speaker 3: fur and tongue who have come across those situations where
- 5:52Speaker 3: the people assumed that he didn't understand them, And at
- 5:55Speaker 3: least in a couple of occasions, folks have said, I
- 5:58Speaker 3: pipe right up, and I said, you know, oh, I'm
- 6:00Speaker 3: pretty fluent in Russian.
- 6:01Speaker 1: For instance. So anyway, and everybody's eyes got big.
- 6:05Speaker 5: My mom speaks, oh, I always screw this up. It's
- 6:08Speaker 5: either Mandarin or Cantonese, one of the two. And she
- 6:11Speaker 5: she used to just respond to them in their tongue,
- 6:14Speaker 5: and they'd all.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Like, oh, oh no, if she understands.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Us, yeah, hm, you know, I you can't do that
- 6:25Speaker 3: as an English speaker in most of the world. No
- 6:29Speaker 3: No reminded of the gal on the train platform in Munich.
- 6:32Speaker 3: I said, excuse me, do you speaking English? And she said,
- 6:35Speaker 3: of course? Like boy, I don't know, take me for
- 6:38Speaker 3: an idiot. Depends on where you were, though.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I mean my story I've told many times of being
- 6:41Speaker 2: stuck in Moscow trying to get on a train that
- 6:44Speaker 2: I thought.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Would be easy.
- 6:45Speaker 2: I spent hours trying to find anyone that would speaking,
- 6:49Speaker 2: could spend English, and could help me get on that train.
- 6:52Speaker 2: And I just got lucky with one dude, or I'd
- 6:55Speaker 2: still be there.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Wow.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Wow, Well, and there are parts of the UNI at
- 7:00Speaker 3: states you can't find a single English speaker, Southern California,
- 7:03Speaker 3: for instance.
- 7:03Speaker 2: So true dead Katie. Do you want to tell your
- 7:06Speaker 2: gym story before we wrap her up today?
- 7:08Speaker 4: Oh? Yeah, I went this was This was dumb.
- 7:11Speaker 5: But yesterday I went to the gym and I was
- 7:13Speaker 5: waiting for this nice young woman to get off of
- 7:17Speaker 5: one of the leg machines.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Do you do you stand there and do you ask?
- 7:22Speaker 4: I don't, I don't know. See that's that's where this
- 7:25Speaker 4: is going. So I saw her.
- 7:26Speaker 5: She was sitting there and I was like, all right,
- 7:28Speaker 5: I'll just I'll go to do something else and wait
- 7:30Speaker 5: for her to again.
- 7:31Speaker 2: That's what I usually do.
- 7:32Speaker 5: I hit five machines, three sets of twelve on each machine.
- 7:39Speaker 4: She did not budge.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Was she looking at her phone? Was she actually exercising?
- 7:43Speaker 5: Yeah, she did, like she did like one set of
- 7:45Speaker 5: ten and then would scroll for like three minutes. And
- 7:49Speaker 5: then the best part was she did two sets on
- 7:52Speaker 5: this machine.
- 7:53Speaker 4: Because I watched her sit down, that was it. Two
- 7:54Speaker 4: sets of ten.
- 7:55Speaker 5: At the end of it, she got up and she
- 7:57Speaker 5: took a picture right next to the machine.
- 8:00Speaker 4: And I told my mom about this. She's like, why
- 8:01Speaker 4: didn't you just say something.
- 8:02Speaker 5: I was like, I didn't have the energy to do that.
- 8:06Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 8:07Speaker 2: But the gym I go to, they've got signs everywhere
- 8:10Speaker 2: it says no looking at your phone in the gym,
- 8:14Speaker 2: and I think it's just for that reason. And it's tough,
- 8:17Speaker 2: I mean, and cause you could think I'm gonna take
- 8:21Speaker 2: a quick glance at my phone in between sets because
- 8:23Speaker 2: you're resting in between sets. Well, we all know how
- 8:25Speaker 2: that works. You take a quick look at your phone
- 8:27Speaker 2: and oh, there's a text from so and so, and
- 8:29Speaker 2: then they say something and you got to text. Next thing,
- 8:31Speaker 2: you know, several minutes have gone by.
- 8:33Speaker 1: So yeah, I done some.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Presses to get your triceps going, then punched you in
- 8:37Speaker 3: the head. That's the only way to settle that violence.
- 8:40Speaker 2: That is the hardest thing in the gym right now.
- 8:42Speaker 2: People sitting on the machines looking at their phone. You
- 8:44Speaker 2: have that problem, Michael.
- 8:45Speaker 6: Yeah, I also have the problem with people having conversations.
- 8:48Speaker 6: There's a woman that she literally just talks as she's
- 8:51Speaker 6: doing her exercise, just like I'm talking now, And so
- 8:54Speaker 6: I told him, baba as so everybody can listen.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Shouldn't work it not hard enough. She can talk that.
- 8:59Speaker 6: Easy, right, Yeah, that's but she does.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Come on. My gym has got the This happened yesterday.
- 9:10Speaker 2: They got a fan in the corner and they have
- 9:12Speaker 2: it cranked up so freaking loud to try to cool
- 9:17Speaker 2: it off in there. I can't hear.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Uh.
- 9:19Speaker 2: I can't hear what I'm listening to on my little headphones,
- 9:21Speaker 2: and I always want to turn down. But it's got
- 9:22Speaker 2: a big sign next to it says don't touch the fan.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Jet engine.
- 9:26Speaker 2: It sounds like a jet engine in there.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it sounds like your gym has a lot of signs.
- 9:30Speaker 2: It does. It has got the most signs in a
- 9:33Speaker 2: very very very progressive area of America and a specifically
- 9:38Speaker 2: progressive area of the city in America, even for that town,
- 9:42Speaker 2: and yes, many many signs. Did they require a mask, No,
- 9:47Speaker 2: thank god, I bet they did for a long time. Though.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I'll bet that gym required a mask for three full years.
- 9:53Speaker 2: I'd be surprised they didn't.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Occupatae detus propios asuntos mind your own business in Spanish.
- 10:03Speaker 1: There you go, Now you're ready to go, Lloyd Bueno.
- 10:08Speaker 6: Well, I guess that's it.
