- 0:00We continue with Gino Oriama here on the Wells Fargo u KUN women's basketball coach,
- 0:03you show don't forget the Huskies take on Providence tomorrow night at the Excel
- 0:08Center. Will be over on the River one o five to nine for that
- 0:10one six o'clock for the broadcast, So if you're coming to the game,
- 0:13it's a six thirty start tomorrow night for the Huskies and the Friars. Here
- 0:17with coach Oriama, you mentioned more free throw attempts than the opposition, where
- 0:21you're certainly taking more than the opposition during this stretch here, almost twenty attempts
- 0:27per game. That's a number we haven't seen in a while on consistent basis.
- 0:31Yeah. Yeah, and I think a lot of that is because we're
- 0:34being we're being more aggressive attacking the basket. You know, we've got an
- 0:40element now KK Paige, trying to get asked to do it more, trying
- 0:47to get Q to do it more, to get to the basket more,
- 0:53ALIAS being really really aggressive, and that always brings more free throws to us.
- 0:58So that aggressiveness one defense has filtered down to the offense, and that's
- 1:03probably why it's caused it, Right, Paige, a la you'd expect,
- 1:07but KK has certainly added that attack mode style of her game. We knew
- 1:11that was her game coming in and she hasn't disappointed in that department. No,
- 1:17KK, Kk's game is quickness and speed, and the more that we
- 1:25can get her in the open floor, the more that we can encourage her
- 1:30to anytime there's you know the term, I use it, anytime there's space.
- 1:37Anytime you see space, you should take it. And you could say
- 1:42that to some people and they can't, but that's what KK likes to do.
- 1:47So the fact that we have three three guards, three point guards in
- 1:55the lineup, any one of them that has it, whoever the other two
- 2:00are that are running the floor, we've done a pretty good job of getting
- 2:02it to them and then getting in the open floor. And that's You're not
- 2:07going to win games just by walking the ball up the floor and attacking people
- 2:10half court and that's not going to happen. So right now, KKs driving
- 2:17it and that's that's made it. And all those drives also lead to more
- 2:24three attempts. So if you see that those two things go together, the
- 2:29more we drive it, the more we attack it, the more free throws
- 2:31we get, and the more threes we get right teams and just under forty
- 2:36percent from three and that a comedy attacking the rim. You know, we're
- 2:38sitting up top in section one oh six behind the scores table on Sunday and
- 2:43you can get a better view of the whole court. There. You see
- 2:46KK going at a high speed. Page goes at her own speed. She's
- 2:51very controlled. The game has certainly slowed down for her, but still she
- 2:53gets the same thing accomplished. Yeah, aw's a kid growing up. There's
- 3:00two ways to do it. You can do it like a football. You
- 3:06can do it Gail Sayah style, the way KK does it. You just
- 3:14find the open field and go. You can do it the way Page does
- 3:17it, the Frank Ohire style. He's just kind of mosey along a little
- 3:22bit at a time, picked this little spot here, that little spot here,
- 3:27and slither through here and next thing you know it. You know,
- 3:30they both have exactly the same thing. If KK tried to do it Page's
- 3:35way, it wouldn't work. If Page tries to do it Kk's way,
- 3:38it wouldn't work. How do you like Page's game? And I'm not just
- 3:40talking on the court. We're talking off the court. I know there was
- 3:43a lot of talk about her leadership off the floor and on the floor for
- 3:46that matter, during the media session today. Oh well, I think she's
- 3:51been everything we need her to be. You know, I think she probably
- 3:55could take way more shots. She probably could try to score way more points.
- 4:00You know, if she had her own personal agenda, maybe she'd be
- 4:04more you know, more selfish, and that's not who she is, you
- 4:11know. So I think she's doing exactly what our team needs her to do
- 4:17and being exactly what our team needs her to be. And that's the beauty
- 4:25of Page. I think, you know, she's you know, I keep
- 4:33using Diana tendencies. You know, I say, well, if I play
- 4:36Page at the point guard spot, she's the best point guard. If I
- 4:40play at the two guards, she's the best two guard. And if I
- 4:42play her at the small forward spot, she's the best small forward. If
- 4:46I play at the four spot, she's the best force pot. So she's
- 4:50being exactly what she needs to be wherever I put her. And that's you
- 4:57can't ask anymore in that, you know, one thing that blows away.
- 5:00I mean, Page is a very popular person. The kids love her.
- 5:04I mean we were in Omaha and you see so many Yukon jerseys and number
- 5:09five jerseys, kids wanting to be like pagebackers, and she just embraces it.
- 5:13But she's very humble about it too, And that's that's that's a good
- 5:16sign for a young lady. She just embraces the whole world. It doesn't
- 5:18really go to her head, or at least it seems like it doesn't.
- 5:23No, No, she is one of those humble superstars that cares about other
- 5:30people. She genuinely cares what you think of her, and she will always
- 5:44try to do the right thing, whether it's in her best interest or not.
- 5:50She will try to do the right thing. And you can't always say
- 5:55that about the best players, you know, but that's what makes her unique.
- 5:59And I think that's what makes people gravitate to her so much. And
- 6:03you mentioned that at least from her teammates standpoint, she's become a pretty good
- 6:06leader. Yeah. You know, her high school coach and I used to
- 6:11talk about this all the time when we're recruiting her, that she's not very
- 6:15vocal. That's she's very quiet, very much introverted. That's what's crazy about
- 6:21you know, all this crazy attention and adulation that she gets everywhere she goes.
- 6:27She's a very very quiet, private person, and she's had to come
- 6:32out of her show a little bit. She's had to come out and be
- 6:35more you know, engaged with with her team and not just in a way
- 6:43where you know, let's have fun and let's you know, do trick shots
- 6:46and who can make the most of these? And you know, it's more.
- 6:50Now I've got to say some things and they may not like what I
- 6:57say, but you have to be you have to say and then you have
- 7:01to do exactly what you say you're going to do, which has made her,
- 7:05which is hard, made her way more disciplined when it comes to that
- 7:11stuff. More Gino, we continue on the Wells Fargo you kind of women's
- 7:15basketball Coaches show in just a minute. Here on Learfield
