Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more disgrace Land in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast. It comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to gave from one full episode
- 0:37Speaker 1: of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig into
- 0:40Speaker 1: the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking about
- 0:44Speaker 1: Winona Rider. We are previewing the coming episode on van Halen,
- 0:48Speaker 1: Part two on van Halen, actually talking about the Hollywood
- 0:51Speaker 1: Land a minute with Tim Allen, and we get into
- 0:53Speaker 1: your voicemails, text DMS emails and as always, a whole
- 0:58Speaker 1: lot of Rosie. Al Right, Discos, let's get into it
- 1:13Speaker 1: all right. This week's full episode of Disgraceland on Winona
- 1:17Speaker 1: Rider is hopefully unlike anyone on a writer's story that
- 1:20Speaker 1: you've heard before. I'd never heard it anyway before we
- 1:22Speaker 1: get into producing it. I'm talking more about Winona's drive
- 1:26Speaker 1: to solve a real life true crime more than I'm
- 1:32Speaker 1: talking about Winona being caught up in her own true crime.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Now that's if you count shoplifting as a true crime,
- 1:39Speaker 1: which I know is a stretch. Anyway, that aside this story,
- 1:44Speaker 1: like I said, we hope it's one that you haven't
- 1:46Speaker 1: heard about Winona before, and we hope you dig. Winona
- 1:49Speaker 1: is a tricky subject to cover. Incidentally, she's the last
- 1:53Speaker 1: non musician that we're covering in the disgrace Sand Feed,
- 1:55Speaker 1: and eventually Winona will take her rightful place in the
- 1:59Speaker 1: Hollywood Land Feed alongside all of the other non musicians
- 2:02Speaker 1: that we covered in this past year in our icon series,
- 2:05Speaker 1: and from now on, once again, Disgraceline will be one
- 2:07Speaker 1: hundred percent music. All right, But back to Winona Ryders.
- 2:11Speaker 1: She's she's interesting, of course, Okay interesting in this context.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I'm saying this because, like I said before, she's tough
- 2:18Speaker 1: to cover. She's an actress, yes, but she's also pretty
- 2:22Speaker 1: rock and roll and always has been. And we didn't
- 2:25Speaker 1: get into Winona's connection to music in this full episode
- 2:29Speaker 1: that we just released a couple of days ago, which
- 2:31Speaker 1: is kind of a miss on our part, but that's
- 2:33Speaker 1: what we have after parties for. So if you grew
- 2:37Speaker 1: up like I did in the nineteen eighties and in
- 2:40Speaker 1: the nineteen nineties, and even if you grew up in
- 2:42Speaker 1: the odds as well, you know that Winona Ryder has
- 2:46Speaker 1: great taste in music. And you can tell this, of course,
- 2:50Speaker 1: not only from the t shirts that she wears, but
- 2:53Speaker 1: by the men that she has dated. I don't know
- 2:56Speaker 1: about you, guys, but I've never really dated anybody seriously
- 3:00Speaker 1: who had bad taste in music. I've dated a couple
- 3:04Speaker 1: of musicians to disastrous ends. I wouldn't I wouldn't recommend that.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Being a musician, I can say that, I think with
- 3:12Speaker 1: a little more full throatedness than others can. My wife, however,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and most of the women i've I've most of the
- 3:20Speaker 1: women I've dated, have had good music, good taste in music.
- 3:22Speaker 1: My wife has incredible taste in music. And she not
- 3:27Speaker 1: only has great taste, she has kind of this, uh,
- 3:31Speaker 1: which I love about her, this sort of fuck you
- 3:33Speaker 1: attitude about it, which if you don't like what I like,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I don't care, and I don't have to like everything
- 3:37Speaker 1: you like. I know that sounds obvious, but in a
- 3:40Speaker 1: lot of couple of dynamics that's not That's not the way.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And I really like being called out for instance, I've
- 3:45Speaker 1: said this before, my wife hates Pearl Jam. I don't
- 3:47Speaker 1: mind Pearl Jam despite the shit I give Pearl Jam
- 3:50Speaker 1: on this on the show, and she's constantly giving me
- 3:53Speaker 1: shit about it. She's constantly checking my my sort of
- 3:57Speaker 1: like Hipper than thou gen X attitude toward music that
- 4:02Speaker 1: I just give off without really trying. And she's you know,
- 4:07Speaker 1: she likes like three to eleven and doesn't care that.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I think that's the lamest thing in the world. A
- 4:13Speaker 1: LIT video will come on, She'll be like, fuck, yeah, Lit.
- 4:15Speaker 1: This reminds me of when I was young, which I
- 4:17Speaker 1: can't stand lit, but you know, she's into it. I
- 4:20Speaker 1: know I'm not selling her as having good taste, but
- 4:22Speaker 1: I'm just saying she has her own, her own north
- 4:24Speaker 1: Star when it comes to music, and she's turned me
- 4:27Speaker 1: on to plenty of great music. I say all this
- 4:30Speaker 1: because we could tell that Winona Ryder had great taste
- 4:33Speaker 1: in music growing up. And it wasn't, like I said,
- 4:35Speaker 1: just about the T shirts. It was about the men
- 4:37Speaker 1: that she dated. Of course, there was Johnny Depp, who,
- 4:40Speaker 1: in addition to being a great actor, is also a musician,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and I think he considers himself and always has first
- 4:46Speaker 1: and foremost a musician. We'll get into more of that
- 4:49Speaker 1: when we do the Johnny Depp episode of Hollywood Land.
- 4:52Speaker 1: That's end of the story. Winona, of course, in addition
- 4:55Speaker 1: to dating Johnny Depp, also dated Dave Perner from Soul Asylum.
- 5:00Speaker 1: She dated I didn't know this until recently. She dated
- 5:02Speaker 1: Paige Hamilton from Helmet. That's crazy to me, I don't know,
- 5:06Speaker 1: because Page just feels like such a regular, non Hollywood
- 5:09Speaker 1: type guy. Not that Dave Perner's Hollywood, but he was
- 5:12Speaker 1: a much bigger rockstar than Page Hamilton was. I guess
- 5:15Speaker 1: I love that Winoda dated Page Hamilton. She also dated
- 5:18Speaker 1: Beck and she dated Ryle o' kylie guitarist Blake Senate,
- 5:22Speaker 1: which makes sense to me now that I read this,
- 5:25Speaker 1: because the one and only time I saw one on
- 5:27Speaker 1: a writer in person, it was backstage at Ryle o'
- 5:29Speaker 1: kylie's last show at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles,
- 5:33Speaker 1: which I had the privilege of going to and somehow
- 5:35Speaker 1: getting backstage. I don't exactly remember how, but I was
- 5:38Speaker 1: totally starstruck when I saw Winona, which I don't usually get,
- 5:42Speaker 1: but I mean, such a huge part of my childhood.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Win on a Rider, man, gosh, just like oh, she
- 5:49Speaker 1: was the coolest, the absolute coolest, like sitting alone on
- 5:53Speaker 1: the mountaintop of cool coolness in the nineteen nineties. Anyways,
- 5:57Speaker 1: And I'm trying to think of what other young starlet.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I don't mean young like age wise, I mean youth culture.
- 6:05Speaker 1: I mean, like, you know, when I say starlet, I like,
- 6:07Speaker 1: you know, Julia Roberts is a starlet. Nicole Kidman's a starlet.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But that's not what I mean. They're they're they're not
- 6:14Speaker 1: of this generation. They were of I guess the nineties
- 6:17Speaker 1: generation when Noona was. I can't come up they were
- 6:21Speaker 1: when Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts were nowhere near as
- 6:25Speaker 1: cool as Went on a Rider. They had their attributes,
- 6:27Speaker 1: for sure, But who was as cool as Ona in
- 6:31Speaker 1: the nineties. I don't know, Drew Barrymore, I don't think so.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Win Ona had her own thing, her completely, completely, her
- 6:35Speaker 1: own thing. She was just totally symbolic of what it
- 6:38Speaker 1: meant to be cool in the nineties. I think I
- 6:42Speaker 1: wouldn't admit it, admitted that then that's how cool I was.
- 6:47Speaker 1: But now just Winoda looked at she talked it. She
- 6:51Speaker 1: clearly thought it. Based on our episode that we just
- 6:53Speaker 1: gave you, I had girlfriends. When I think about it,
- 6:57Speaker 1: I had girlfriends that were like Winona knockoffs. They did
- 7:00Speaker 1: their hair like Wanona, they dressed like Wanona. That's sort
- 7:03Speaker 1: of I'm not saying they copied Wenona's sense of humor,
- 7:06Speaker 1: that sly sense of humor, but that was the aesthetic
- 7:08Speaker 1: that was part of the cultural that was the cultural moment,
- 7:11Speaker 1: that was part of the mentality that we were all
- 7:13Speaker 1: going through in the middle of Generation X, as we
- 7:16Speaker 1: were consuming culture and trying to emulate it. I think
- 7:19Speaker 1: we overlook what I'm getting at here is I think
- 7:21Speaker 1: we overlook Winona Ryders' impact on culture beyond, of course,
- 7:24Speaker 1: the men she dated. That's not the point I'm trying
- 7:27Speaker 1: to make. I'm trying to make the point that she
- 7:30Speaker 1: wasn't dating no slubs. She was too cool for that.
- 7:32Speaker 1: But I'm trying to think of actresses from other eras
- 7:36Speaker 1: who represented their eras in the same way that Winona
- 7:39Speaker 1: did the nineties. Maybe Daryl Hannah in the nineteen eighties,
- 7:44Speaker 1: maybe Olivia Newton John in the seventies. You go back
- 7:47Speaker 1: further to the nineteen sixties, you start talking about Raquel
- 7:50Speaker 1: Welch and Bridget Bardow, and I don't know those those
- 7:54Speaker 1: actresses didn't seem to have a grip on culture in
- 7:58Speaker 1: the same way that Winona did. Cool rock Star Boyfriend's aside, again,
- 8:03Speaker 1: Winnona's nineteen nineties filmography is a murderer's row of cool
- 8:10Speaker 1: as just the coolest movie roles. I mean, come on,
- 8:14Speaker 1: Mermaids and Edward Scissorhands in nineteen ninety and yes, I
- 8:18Speaker 1: had the Mermaids soundtrack on cassette. Then you got Jim
- 8:22Speaker 1: Jermush's Night on Earth in ninety one. Martin scorsesees The
- 8:25Speaker 1: Age of Innocence in ninety one as well, which, okay,
- 8:28Speaker 1: you know, sure, I didn't see this until about two
- 8:30Speaker 1: years ago, but it's still Wanona with Martin Scorsese. Pretty
- 8:34Speaker 1: much right after Goodfellas, she did Dracula the Crucible, Woody
- 8:39Speaker 1: Allen's Celebrity, which is underrated, by the way, and uh
- 8:44Speaker 1: not one of my favorite movies, but I know people
- 8:46Speaker 1: love Girl Interrupted. And then I mean, at the end
- 8:49Speaker 1: of the eighties you have Heathers and Beetlejuice, which precedes
- 8:53Speaker 1: that incredible list. I just gave you. That's an amazing
- 8:57Speaker 1: run for any actor. It's incredible and no wonder we
- 9:01Speaker 1: were all smitten with Winona. Was there anyone cooler in
- 9:05Speaker 1: the nineties than Wanona? I don't know anyway, I hope
- 9:09Speaker 1: you dug the episode. Go check it out. It's the
- 9:10Speaker 1: one that comes just before this yere bonus episode, this
- 9:13Speaker 1: after party episode of Disgraceland. We had a rewind episode
- 9:16Speaker 1: coming up right afterwards. This week, we're going back to
- 9:19Speaker 1: the nineties again, the Notorious Big in our rewind slot.
- 9:22Speaker 1: It's a two parter and we programmed it here because
- 9:26Speaker 1: the Ditty trial is starting on May fifth. I think
- 9:30Speaker 1: that date is still going to hold. We shall see.
- 9:33Speaker 1: So if you want a primer on the special brand
- 9:36Speaker 1: of bad boy nineties madness, and you can't go wrong
- 9:39Speaker 1: with these Biggie Small's episodes, which essentially get into who
- 9:44Speaker 1: I think killed the Notorious Big, Christopher Wallace. I had
- 9:49Speaker 1: to be cagy about it in the episode. I couldn't
- 9:51Speaker 1: just come out outright and say it, you know. I
- 9:55Speaker 1: hope someday we get to the truth of this. I
- 9:57Speaker 1: think it's crazy that we're not there yet. I have
- 10:00Speaker 1: this real kind of like low key burning yearning desire
- 10:06Speaker 1: to have these these these ditty revelations that I hope
- 10:10Speaker 1: are coming with this trial. I hope we get some
- 10:13Speaker 1: sort of insight into Biggie's death and into Tupac's death
- 10:16Speaker 1: as well. Not sure if that's going to happen, but
- 10:19Speaker 1: I am crossing my fingers. So check out the notorious
- 10:22Speaker 1: big episodes that are in the rewind spot. You will
- 10:24Speaker 1: not be disappointed. They're produced in a really great way,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and I think you're going to find it fascinating. If
- 10:30Speaker 1: you have questions on who killed Christopher Wallace, I want
- 10:33Speaker 1: to talk about it in a more in depth manner.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Hit me up, Hit me up, you know where to
- 10:38Speaker 1: hit me up Patreon, hit me up on Instagram, email me,
- 10:41Speaker 1: I'm around to talk Biggie, all right, listen, coming up
- 10:44Speaker 1: after that on Tuesday, Next Tuesday, we've got our or
- 10:48Speaker 1: this next Tuesday coming Yeah, we've got our two part
- 10:52Speaker 1: episode on van Halen. Now you didn't expect us to
- 10:55Speaker 1: just release one Van van Halen episode, did you. There
- 10:58Speaker 1: are way to any insane Van Halen stories to tell,
- 11:02Speaker 1: and you're getting it all here and just grace Anne,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and you're getting it differently than you will anywhere else
- 11:07Speaker 1: you might have noticed. We don't tell these stories the
- 11:08Speaker 1: same way everyone else does. We don't give you the
- 11:11Speaker 1: paint bye numbers take on these artists. We give you
- 11:13Speaker 1: the stuff you likely never heard before unless you go
- 11:16Speaker 1: as deep as we do. And I know some of
- 11:18Speaker 1: you do, and I love that about you. But still
- 11:20Speaker 1: we give you our own take on these artists, no
- 11:23Speaker 1: matter the research, and it's always from the heart. And
- 11:25Speaker 1: I know you guys appreciate it, and I appreciate you
- 11:27Speaker 1: for it. Anyways, Van Halen brings us to next week's
- 11:31Speaker 1: question of the Week. When you're listening to the Part
- 11:32Speaker 1: two episode of Van Hallen, I want you to be
- 11:34Speaker 1: thinking about the mount Rushmore of Guitar Players. We talked
- 11:38Speaker 1: about this before, we did not settle it. I think
- 11:40Speaker 1: I think I did a real on Van Halen, and
- 11:42Speaker 1: that's what prompted this conversation we were having on Instagram
- 11:46Speaker 1: and did real on Eddie. Excuse me, but I want
- 11:49Speaker 1: to get into it in a bigger way here with
- 11:51Speaker 1: the whole podcast audience. I want to know who you
- 11:54Speaker 1: think deserves to be on the mount Rushmore of Guitar Players,
- 11:59Speaker 1: and I want you you know, let me know if
- 12:00Speaker 1: Eddie van Halen deserves to be I think you know
- 12:02Speaker 1: how I feel on this and if Eddie does or doesn't.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Who are the four guitars that are up there? Okay,
- 12:09Speaker 1: you only get to choose four, and I want to
- 12:11Speaker 1: know if Eddie van Halen has major list let me know.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Six one seven, nine h six six sixty three eight
- 12:15Speaker 1: voicemail and text at Disgrace lam pod on the socials
- 12:19Speaker 1: to give me your answer on the question of the week.
- 12:21Speaker 1: You may hear your answer and next week's after party.
- 12:24Speaker 1: When we get into the voicemails, we get into the text,
- 12:26Speaker 1: we get into the dms. I'm gonna take a quick
- 12:28Speaker 1: break right now, but as always I'll be hanging with
- 12:31Speaker 1: you on the telephone on the other side with your voicemails,
- 12:34Speaker 1: text and dms. All right, Apple podcast listeners, just a
- 12:55Speaker 1: reminder if you don't have your auto downloads turned on
- 12:58Speaker 1: in your Apple podcast app, please make sure you do that.
- 13:01Speaker 1: We do not miss any episodes of Disgrace, Sam. You
- 13:03Speaker 1: don't miss the full episodes. You know, miss the after parties.
- 13:06Speaker 1: You don't miss the rewinds. You get everything, all right.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 13:11Speaker 1: You know where I'm at him in the phone with
- 13:12Speaker 1: this one across the hall. I'm hanging on the telephone.
- 13:14Speaker 1: You want to send me a voicemail or a text,
- 13:17Speaker 1: this is the place to do it. And the way
- 13:19Speaker 1: to do it again is six one seven nine oh
- 13:21Speaker 1: six six six three eight.
- 13:23Speaker 2: All right.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Let's hear from Miguel in the eight one three.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, what's up. It's Miguel of Tampa.
- 13:30Speaker 3: You're talking about bands that or people from bands that
- 13:35Speaker 3: went from one band to another and.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Had a better or at least impactful career with them both.
- 13:43Speaker 3: And one of the ones that I first think of
- 13:45Speaker 3: is Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman from Operation IVY going
- 13:49Speaker 3: on to form Rampid, And like I said, I'm not
- 13:52Speaker 3: saying better but impactful still, So yeah, that's all I got,
- 13:57Speaker 3: all right, Jake?
- 13:58Speaker 1: Later mell Gael, you are so right on, man. I
- 14:01Speaker 1: can't believe I blew that one. I loved Operation IVY
- 14:04Speaker 1: growing up, had that cassette sound system. Gonna, what's you say,
- 14:10Speaker 1: scientist do won't end it? I can't remember. But Tim
- 14:15Speaker 1: Armstrong goes on to make Ranted after Operation IVY. Just incredible.
- 14:20Speaker 1: All right, Let's hear from Travis in the nine to Oh.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, this is Travis from Cape Florol, Florida. Awesome
- 14:28Speaker 2: episode of Chris Cornell Sound Garden. So for your question,
- 14:31Speaker 2: I gotta say I am a huge, huge fan of Slash.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I might get a little bit of hate for this,
- 14:37Speaker 2: but now appetite for destruction, use your illusion. One two
- 14:42Speaker 2: of the best rock albums ever in my opinion. However,
- 14:46Speaker 2: Slash has done more on the collaboration end and the
- 14:51Speaker 2: solo end than he did with Guns n' Roses, and
- 14:55Speaker 2: he just put out some phenomenal, phenomenal stuff since he
- 14:59Speaker 2: left Guns and Elysis. Again. Might get a little heat
- 15:04Speaker 2: for that, but that's I'm sticking to it. A huge
- 15:06Speaker 2: fan of Slash, love your show, keep up the great work.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Rock roll Uh.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Love this take. I can't. I can't totally go there
- 15:15Speaker 1: with you on it, though, because nothing Slash did after
- 15:20Speaker 1: Guns and Roses was as culturally impactful as Guns of Roses.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Maybe Velvet Revolver, I guess comes the closest. And I understand.
- 15:29Speaker 1: I know his solo stuff is really good. I know
- 15:31Speaker 1: people love it, people freak out about it, So I
- 15:34Speaker 1: see where you're coming from, you know, It's just tough though.
- 15:39Speaker 1: It's tough to go all the way there with you
- 15:41Speaker 1: because of like I said, Guns and Roses were just
- 15:43Speaker 1: I mean, you know they were. They were just incredibly
- 15:46Speaker 1: important culturally in the in the nineties. They were just
- 15:50Speaker 1: the biggest band, biggest rock band around until Nirvana came.
- 15:53Speaker 1: And you know, one thing, it just reminded me of
- 15:56Speaker 1: the like we're talking about. We got this Van Hallin
- 15:58Speaker 1: episode coming up, and we're talking great guitarist Slash. I
- 16:01Speaker 1: don't feel like it's enough heat as the great guitarist
- 16:04Speaker 1: in the conversation with the greats. And maybe maybe some
- 16:07Speaker 1: guitar players out there have good reason for for not
- 16:10Speaker 1: thinking so. But I think Slash's style is pretty signature.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I think he's a beast of a guitar player. I
- 16:19Speaker 1: think he could play different styles if he cared to.
- 16:22Speaker 1: And Travis, you probably know better than most because you're
- 16:25Speaker 1: up on his solo stuff. He's just he's one of
- 16:27Speaker 1: those guys. Is he top four? Mount Rushmore? I don't know.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Call me back, let me know what you think, all right,
- 16:32Speaker 1: Travis six one seven nine six six six three eight
- 16:35Speaker 1: voicemail and text five to three to oho Zach from
- 16:39Speaker 1: Sack Zach from Sack, I'm guessing that's Sacramento. Zach's writing
- 16:45Speaker 1: in as well about Tim Armstrong going on to be
- 16:47Speaker 1: an Operation ivy. I really left this one just I
- 16:50Speaker 1: left this one hanging out there, all right. Three h
- 16:52Speaker 1: two writes in in relation to her Win on a
- 16:54Speaker 1: Rider episode, Hey definitely Drew, Barrymore and Win on a
- 16:57Speaker 1: Rider over Heather Graham, Winoda and Drew have definitely outlasted Heather.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Where is Heather? Now? Where'd she go? Did you know
- 17:04Speaker 1: that she dated adam Ant for a while? Heather Graham?
- 17:08Speaker 1: Heather Graham dated adam Ant. That can't be true. Come on,
- 17:12Speaker 1: someone said I should do an adam An episode or
- 17:14Speaker 1: disgrace sand should I six one seven nine? I was
- 17:16Speaker 1: six six six three eight? Let me know, all right?
- 17:18Speaker 1: Doug writes in from the five to one three Jake
- 17:20Speaker 1: Doug from the five one three STP is great, not
- 17:23Speaker 1: a poser, not contrived. He died from heroin what's more?
- 17:27Speaker 1: Grunge on that note, maybe pro Jams is a contrived band.
- 17:34Speaker 1: I don't agree, but I love this logic. It's dark,
- 17:37Speaker 1: but I love it. Five one three goes on right
- 17:40Speaker 1: and Geese what do you hear that I don't? I
- 17:42Speaker 1: can tell this. I can tell this, dude, Doug is
- 17:45Speaker 1: being very very charitable to me right now. He's holding back.
- 17:48Speaker 1: He wants to kill me for liking Geese, and he's
- 17:51Speaker 1: being very polite. Doug. I appreciate, he says. And Geese question, Mark,
- 17:54Speaker 1: what do you hear that I don't? They opened for
- 17:56Speaker 1: GVF last year and they were the worst band I've
- 17:59Speaker 1: ever heard. Maybe they suck live and I need to
- 18:02Speaker 1: give them a second chance. Maybe I need to start
- 18:04Speaker 1: questioning your usually impeccable taste. Okay, first of all, they
- 18:12Speaker 1: could have sucked live. I don't. I don't. I don't
- 18:14Speaker 1: doubt that some bands have bad nights. Some bands it
- 18:17Speaker 1: takes them a long, long long time to become a
- 18:20Speaker 1: good live band. Now, I will tell you. I went
- 18:23Speaker 1: on YouTube prior to reading this a couple weeks ago,
- 18:26Speaker 1: as in a Geese hole, and I saw a lot
- 18:29Speaker 1: of bad live Geese. Okay, a lot of bad, like
- 18:32Speaker 1: embarrassingly bad. However, there is some great live Geese as well,
- 18:38Speaker 1: and it's clearly just a thing of them taking time
- 18:40Speaker 1: to get their live shit together. There's a rolling stone
- 18:44Speaker 1: studio like live in studio thing that Geese did where
- 18:48Speaker 1: they're just they're hitting on every level. Fantastic. Check that out.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Maybe that'll change your mind. What I'm hearing that you
- 18:55Speaker 1: don't is the irreverence, the weirdness, the youth. It's all
- 19:02Speaker 1: fresh and exciting to me, and it is the perfect
- 19:07Speaker 1: meld of being steeped in rock and roll tradition but
- 19:09Speaker 1: not sounding like anything that I've heard before. So there
- 19:12Speaker 1: you go. I think I just salvaged my quote unquote
- 19:15Speaker 1: usually impeccable taste, Doug, I hope. So anyways, Oh and
- 19:19Speaker 1: what I'm hearing that you're not, I think is three
- 19:22Speaker 1: D Country, the twenty twenty three full length. Check that out, Doug,
- 19:27Speaker 1: and listen to it from start to finish and let
- 19:29Speaker 1: me know what you think. All right, guys, real quick
- 19:31Speaker 1: before we move on to the next part of this
- 19:32Speaker 1: Afro party, I want to I want to let you
- 19:34Speaker 1: know this thing we just did. We had our representatives
- 19:38Speaker 1: who work for us. They did a data analysis of
- 19:42Speaker 1: our audience of you guys, and they largely went based
- 19:48Speaker 1: on what they could learn from our social media following,
- 19:52Speaker 1: and what they came back with I feel like was
- 19:56Speaker 1: kind of accurate, not as accurate as I would like
- 19:58Speaker 1: it to be. But basically what they're saying is, you
- 20:01Speaker 1: guys are mostly between the ages of twenty five and
- 20:05Speaker 1: fifty five. You skew slightly more female than male, more
- 20:12Speaker 1: of you are college educated than not. You make slightly
- 20:17Speaker 1: more money than most Americans do. You're and whatever. That
- 20:22Speaker 1: stuff is less interesting to me than the following you
- 20:26Speaker 1: are into. So they can they can gauge you know
- 20:29Speaker 1: what you're into for music and what you're into. You
- 20:32Speaker 1: know what kind of celebrities you follow, what your general
- 20:35Speaker 1: interests are.
- 20:37Speaker 4: And.
- 20:38Speaker 1: So you guys are more than any other music. You're
- 20:41Speaker 1: into alternative slash rock. Okay, and I guess that's just
- 20:45Speaker 1: defined as however social media defines it celebrities that you're
- 20:50Speaker 1: really into. Carrie Brownstein from Portlandia. Ryan Adams was another one.
- 20:56Speaker 1: The author Brad Meltzer, who I've never read before, So
- 21:01Speaker 1: I found that to be interesting. You're heavily into tattoos,
- 21:05Speaker 1: you like beer, and generally speaking, you're into Americana, So
- 21:11Speaker 1: I thought, okay, maybe, sure, yeah, I get it. I
- 21:15Speaker 1: see where they're coming from. But I talk to you
- 21:18Speaker 1: guys every week. I hear from you here on voicemail
- 21:21Speaker 1: and text, and I don't think this is totally accurate.
- 21:26Speaker 1: If I had a guess, I would say that you
- 21:28Speaker 1: are slightly more male than female. I think they nailed
- 21:31Speaker 1: the age, income, all that stuff. Top cities, however they mentioned,
- 21:37Speaker 1: I should mention this are New York City, Los Angeles, Boston,
- 21:40Speaker 1: Austin in that order, but I think that's just reflective
- 21:44Speaker 1: of how big those cities are compared to others. I
- 21:47Speaker 1: know you guys are all over the place. I hear it.
- 21:49Speaker 1: I mean, look, I was this texting with somebody from Oklahoma,
- 21:53Speaker 1: another from Cape Coral, Florida. I know you're all over
- 21:55Speaker 1: the place, but I'm more interested in, like the muse
- 22:00Speaker 1: side of things, the television and film side of things.
- 22:02Speaker 1: What you're into. I want to know what your interests are,
- 22:08Speaker 1: if you could be so kind. I don't want to
- 22:10Speaker 1: do a survey or anything like that, but just hit
- 22:11Speaker 1: me up six point seven nine O six sixty sixty
- 22:13Speaker 1: three and tell me about yourselves. Tell me what you're
- 22:16Speaker 1: into for music, and be general you don't be you
- 22:19Speaker 1: don't have to be super specific about it. You can
- 22:21Speaker 1: be general about it. You know, are you more into
- 22:23Speaker 1: alternative than you are into classic rock. Are you more
- 22:26Speaker 1: into punk than you are into alternative? Are you more
- 22:30Speaker 1: whatever it is? There's no right or wrong answer. I
- 22:33Speaker 1: think they're accurate. I think you guys are on the
- 22:36Speaker 1: sort of gen X alternative slash classic rock with a
- 22:42Speaker 1: heavy interest in punk. I think that's generally speaking, who
- 22:45Speaker 1: you guys are. I think I think you pride yourself.
- 22:49Speaker 1: There's no way to tell this, but I think you
- 22:51Speaker 1: pride yourself on your knowledge of music history and culture
- 22:57Speaker 1: and celebrity history and culture. And I think you pride
- 23:00Speaker 1: yourself on knowing a little bit more than the average
- 23:03Speaker 1: bear when it comes to these topics, and you like
- 23:06Speaker 1: sharing these topics with other people, which tells me that
- 23:09Speaker 1: you're not only curious, you're also smart, which you know.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Whether you're college educated or not, that doesn't matter. You're
- 23:17Speaker 1: curious and smart. I know that about you, and no
- 23:21Speaker 1: demographic testing machine is going to tell me otherwise, not
- 23:24Speaker 1: that it is, but again, I want to know. I
- 23:27Speaker 1: guess the question is this, what is your favorite style
- 23:30Speaker 1: of music, who are your favorite artists, what are your
- 23:33Speaker 1: favorite movies? Who are your favorite actors and actresses? And
- 23:37Speaker 1: generally speaking, what are you into? Car shows? IPA's tattoos,
- 23:43Speaker 1: that sort of thing. What's the big kind of general
- 23:46Speaker 1: thing that you guys are into flea marketing and teeking.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I don't think it's those things, but I'm throwing out
- 23:50Speaker 1: some other examples. Hit me back and let me know
- 23:53Speaker 1: I'd really really appreciated six point seven nine h six
- 23:55Speaker 1: six six three eight, because the more I can nail
- 23:57Speaker 1: this down, the more I can figure out what to
- 24:00Speaker 1: give you guys for content. And we're trying to figure
- 24:03Speaker 1: out not only our programming slate for the rest of
- 24:05Speaker 1: this year and next year right now, I'm also which
- 24:09Speaker 1: is easier to do than this other thing I'm about
- 24:11Speaker 1: to talk about. I'm also trying to figure out I've
- 24:13Speaker 1: got some opportunities to do some big projects. I'm trying
- 24:15Speaker 1: to figure out what I want to do and how
- 24:17Speaker 1: I want to do it in the next few years.
- 24:19Speaker 1: And having a better idea of who you guys are
- 24:22Speaker 1: will help me make those decisions and help the rest
- 24:24Speaker 1: of us here at Double Elvis as well. Plus it's
- 24:26Speaker 1: just another way to get to know you guys, and
- 24:28Speaker 1: that's always fun, all right. So six one seven nine
- 24:30Speaker 1: oh six six six three eight voicemail and text email
- 24:33Speaker 1: just graslimpod at gmail dot com. We want to do
- 24:35Speaker 1: it that way and let me know what your favorite
- 24:37Speaker 1: style of music is, who your favorite musicians are, what
- 24:42Speaker 1: types of movies and actors and actresses you love, and
- 24:44Speaker 1: generally speaking, what are you guys into Now? I know
- 24:48Speaker 1: you're into Robin Williams because we got into our easter
- 24:51Speaker 1: egg question last last week and I got so many
- 24:54Speaker 1: responses from you guys. I'm going to play a voicemail
- 24:56Speaker 1: response here with the answer because it came in quick,
- 24:59Speaker 1: it came in fast. The question was what did Robin
- 25:03Speaker 1: Williams in our Hollywood Land episode. The easter egg was
- 25:09Speaker 1: what did Robin Williams get from the prostitute when he
- 25:12Speaker 1: turned twenty one? And the answer comes from the five
- 25:15Speaker 1: seven three.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Hello to all of the good people at Disgraceland. I
- 25:20Speaker 4: was calling in reference to your Easter rag from the
- 25:22Speaker 4: Robin Williams episode that just had come out on Hollywood Land.
- 25:26Speaker 4: I do believe that the prostitute gave Robin Williams a refund,
- 25:32Speaker 4: a refund for his services. Yes, that's the correct answer.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Thanks for everything you guys love the show.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Yes, five seven three, you are correct. A refund is
- 25:45Speaker 1: the answer Robin Williams. That's what Rob Williams got from
- 25:48Speaker 1: the prostitute when he turned twenty one. All right, so
- 25:51Speaker 1: for the Easter Egg this week, guys, it's the Tim
- 25:53Speaker 1: Allen episode of hollywood Land. The question is what football
- 25:56Speaker 1: game did Tim Allen not go to? What football game
- 26:01Speaker 1: did Tim Allen not go to? Head over to hollywood Land,
- 26:04Speaker 1: dive into that Tim Allen episode, find the answer. Hit
- 26:06Speaker 1: me at six month seven nine six six six three eight,
- 26:08Speaker 1: leave me a voicemail, send me a text with your answer,
- 26:10Speaker 1: or be the first to post on Instagram. When we
- 26:12Speaker 1: pose this question again, the Easter egg answer is in
- 26:15Speaker 1: the Tim Allen episode of hollywood Land. What football game
- 26:18Speaker 1: did Tim Allen not go to? And if you have
- 26:21Speaker 1: not heard this Tim Allen episode, you're going to want
- 26:25Speaker 1: to It is not, I promise you, it is not
- 26:28Speaker 1: the Tim Allen that you think you know. Again the
- 26:31Speaker 1: Easter egg question what football game did Tim Allen not
- 26:35Speaker 1: go to? Which brings us nicely into our sports rant
- 26:38Speaker 1: for this week. I'm a big baseball fan. You guys
- 26:42Speaker 1: know this. I'm a big, big Red Sox fan. I'm
- 26:44Speaker 1: more into the season this year than I've been in
- 26:47Speaker 1: the past few seasons. I think it's partially because my kids.
- 26:49Speaker 1: But anyways, we get the MLB app. That's where we
- 26:52Speaker 1: watch our games. And I gotta say, the MLB app.
- 26:56Speaker 1: If you guys, anyone has it, get in touch, let
- 26:58Speaker 1: me know your experiences. But my experience is that the
- 27:01Speaker 1: MLB app is a piece of steaming hot garbage. It
- 27:04Speaker 1: barely works when I wanted to work. It didn't work
- 27:07Speaker 1: on Opening Day. How does that? I mean, come on
- 27:09Speaker 1: opening day. I'm watching the game this weekend and I'm
- 27:14Speaker 1: sitting there and the thing just it's constantly hung up.
- 27:17Speaker 1: It's constantly loading and loading and loading and loading, and
- 27:21Speaker 1: I cannot get what the hell. I restarted my Wi Fi.
- 27:24Speaker 1: I did though, I closed the app. I logged in,
- 27:27Speaker 1: I logged out. It's still loading and loading and loading
- 27:29Speaker 1: and loading. Finally, I'm like, screw this. I put the
- 27:33Speaker 1: game the audio on on the app on my phone,
- 27:36Speaker 1: not as opposed to the video on the app of
- 27:38Speaker 1: my television. I tune in and Jared Durant Steals Home,
- 27:42Speaker 1: Steals Home, and I missed it. I missed it. I
- 27:47Speaker 1: missed it. You know how often home plate is stolen?
- 27:52Speaker 4: You know?
- 27:52Speaker 1: I mean we've been waiting for Jared. I know he
- 27:54Speaker 1: did it once, but it was a double steal. It
- 27:55Speaker 1: doesn't count. This is a straight up guys pitching the
- 27:59Speaker 1: ball to home and Jared Durant takes off, beats the
- 28:03Speaker 1: throw and scores and I missed it because the freaking
- 28:06Speaker 1: MLB app man. Come on, It's gotta be a better way. Honestly,
- 28:11Speaker 1: I think I should just go straight out of you.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I think I should just I should listen to the
- 28:15Speaker 1: radio broadcast every night, and I should I should score
- 28:19Speaker 1: the game. I should get one of those baseball scoring pads,
- 28:22Speaker 1: and I should sit in my chair, my old man chair,
- 28:24Speaker 1: poor glass of bourbon, and that should be it. I
- 28:27Speaker 1: should just give up on the video component. We have
- 28:29Speaker 1: all this new digital media and ways to deliver it,
- 28:33Speaker 1: and yet is it Are we a Are we better off?
- 28:37Speaker 1: I don't know. Anyways, that's my sports rant. I want
- 28:40Speaker 1: you guys to feel my pain. That's why I'm giving
- 28:42Speaker 1: you this. Okay, I'll be back in the flash Hollywood
- 28:45Speaker 1: man a minute. Okay, we are back, and you know
- 28:59Speaker 1: what time it is. It's time the hollywoodlam min. It
- 29:00Speaker 1: brought to you by the Hollywood Lamp Podcast. Don't know
- 29:02Speaker 1: what the Hollywood Lamp podcast is. Well, The Hollywood Lamp
- 29:04Speaker 1: Podcast is hosted about yours truly worry. Every week I
- 29:06Speaker 1: tell you a story from the annex of Hollywood and
- 29:08Speaker 1: true crime. And right now there are over forty episodes
- 29:11Speaker 1: waiting for you to bench. Episodes on Charlie Sheen, David
- 29:13Speaker 1: Lynn trot and Williams, Danny Treyhill, John Waters, Steph Queen,
- 29:15Speaker 1: merrilmn Roe, Drew Barrymore, Jane Fonda, and most recently, the
- 29:19Speaker 1: very talented and funny Tim Allen. Here's a clip. Only
- 29:24Speaker 1: a month earlier, Michigan state legislators had passed a new
- 29:28Speaker 1: law that made possession with intent to distribute over six
- 29:31Speaker 1: hundred and fifty grams of cocaine or heroin punishable by
- 29:34Speaker 1: a mandatory life sentence no possibility of parole. The only
- 29:39Speaker 1: other crime in the state with an equally harsh penalty
- 29:42Speaker 1: was murder. It was the toughest drug law in the
- 29:45Speaker 1: United States. Six hundred and fifty grams just under a
- 29:49Speaker 1: pound and a half. That was the exact amount that
- 29:53Speaker 1: Tim had in the Adidas gym bag that he brought
- 29:55Speaker 1: to the setup with the undercover cops at the Kalamazoo
- 29:58Speaker 1: County Airport, and now sitting on a cold metal bench
- 30:02Speaker 1: against the wall of a holding cell in jails, surrounded
- 30:05Speaker 1: by men who are far more grizzly and hardened than
- 30:08Speaker 1: he could ever be in his wildest dreams. Tim worried
- 30:11Speaker 1: he'd get busted again, and this time it would be
- 30:15Speaker 1: his head, his face, and Jesus Christ, maybe even worse.
- 30:19Speaker 1: He'd heard the stories about the inside what happens when
- 30:22Speaker 1: men do what they have to do simply to survive.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Half of the dudes here were certifiable. Just say one
- 30:29Speaker 1: wrong thing, one wrong word, and your word gone. All right, Guys,
- 30:33Speaker 1: make sure you are subscribed to Hollywoodland on Apple Podcasts, Spotify,
- 30:38Speaker 1: or wherever you get your podcast. Next week is our
- 30:40Speaker 1: episode on Will Smith. You're not gonna want to miss that.
- 30:43Speaker 1: You can email me disgrace landpod at gmail dot com
- 30:46Speaker 1: on any topic you like. This one comes from Justin
- 30:48Speaker 1: Moore just says hey, letter from a fan, Jake. I
- 30:51Speaker 1: wanted to reach out and thank you for the wonderful
- 30:53Speaker 1: podcast from Disgraceland and hollywood Land. You have a great
- 30:55Speaker 1: voice to listen to, great production value on your show.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Is my favorite is when you refer to songs or
- 31:01Speaker 1: old sayings as a slice of cheese. I now try
- 31:03Speaker 1: to work that lingo into my conversations for fun. Thanks
- 31:06Speaker 1: for making my workday less shitty. Keep up the good work. Cheers,
- 31:09Speaker 1: Justin slash JMO slash Justin, Thank you so much for
- 31:12Speaker 1: the email. Appreciate you. You get to watch out for
- 31:15Speaker 1: those slices of cheese. They'll come back on you. Fill
- 31:19Speaker 1: our rights in Ween message suck, Please consider doing some
- 31:23Speaker 1: research on Ween. I hated them bad when I discovered
- 31:27Speaker 1: them on Beavis and butt heead a age twelve, but
- 31:30Speaker 1: after I was reintroduced to them following the Mallus tour,
- 31:32Speaker 1: I fell in love. I really regret skipping this concert
- 31:35Speaker 1: because they broke up for a few years, and now
- 31:38Speaker 1: I'm the biggest fan. They make excellent music. I think
- 31:40Speaker 1: Mickey's probably one of the best guitars of all time.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Aaron is no sluge either. They ended their tour and
- 31:45Speaker 1: definitely now and we'll probably stay that way. And I
- 31:47Speaker 1: know there are some stories I just don't know where
- 31:49Speaker 1: to look. Plus, this would be a great episode in
- 31:50Speaker 1: your style. I love Ween, I love love love them,
- 31:53Speaker 1: and I would love to do an episode on them
- 31:55Speaker 1: I have to find some sort of crime angle. But
- 31:58Speaker 1: too bad that they couldn't just borrow some Weezer shit,
- 32:01Speaker 1: because I think there's a Weezer episode coming guys ween
- 32:03Speaker 1: Weezer anyhow, at some point, thanks Phil Disgrace sandpod at

- 32:25Speaker 1: that easy. Rumspringer two thousand on Spotify right said Chester
- 32:29Speaker 1: Bennington episode would be cool. We share a birthday. I
- 32:32Speaker 1: played your board a episode to someone to explain why
- 32:35Speaker 1: I am the way I am. Rumspringer writes that, in
- 32:41Speaker 1: relation to our Chris Cornell episode, I understand the connection
- 32:45Speaker 1: between Chris Cornell, sorry my dog's freaking out and Chester Bennington,
- 32:50Speaker 1: and we are doing a Chester Bennington episode Rubspringer, two thousand,
- 32:54Speaker 1: So you have nothing to fear. Mile high mo Over
- 32:57Speaker 1: on Apple podcast writes five stars Jaking the Double Elvis
- 32:59Speaker 1: Crew four like Voltron, and he just happens to be
- 33:01Speaker 1: the head. Jake's storytelling skills or second to none. It's
- 33:05Speaker 1: a dying skill and he's running with the embers. The
- 33:07Speaker 1: music is tremendous. You don't even notice it's on licensed
- 33:10Speaker 1: it's so good. It definitely sets a vibe. And the
- 33:12Speaker 1: writers they pull out unheard stories about artists I thought
- 33:15Speaker 1: I knew front to back. This podcast still amazes me
- 33:18Speaker 1: and for many years of listening, I got both my
- 33:19Speaker 1: kids hooked on it. My son and I are Patreon members.

- 34:14Speaker 1: we are back listen this week. I don't know what happened,
- 34:17Speaker 1: but we didn't talk that much about artists who we've
- 34:19Speaker 1: covered previously in Disgraceland here in this episode. That's rare.
- 34:23Speaker 1: It usually just comes up organically. So I'm gonna lay
- 34:26Speaker 1: on you some of my faves here that we don't
- 34:27Speaker 1: mention enough. Okay, and the Matt's gonna have the links
- 34:31Speaker 1: and the episode information in the show notes so you
- 34:33Speaker 1: can check them out. We did a two parter on
- 34:35Speaker 1: Willie Nelson that I feel like we don't talk about enough.
- 34:38Speaker 1: That's available for you. I know there's a lot of
- 34:40Speaker 1: Willie Nelson fans out there. We also did a two
- 34:42Speaker 1: parter on Lou Reed plus an additional full episode on
- 34:46Speaker 1: the Velvet Underground. Those are available for you as well.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Skip James one of the most incredible blues musicians of
- 34:54Speaker 1: all time. If you like blues, if you're interested in
- 34:57Speaker 1: learning more about the blues, check out the Skip James episode.
- 35:00Speaker 1: It has one of the most painful, violent, excruciating scenes
- 35:05Speaker 1: we've ever depicted in any of our episodes is in
- 35:08Speaker 1: the Skip James episode. It's a real life thing that
- 35:11Speaker 1: happened to him. It's something that, for whatever reason, does
- 35:13Speaker 1: not get mentioned in the history of music. I don't
- 35:15Speaker 1: understand why not, but it should. It's fucking crazy, and
- 35:18Speaker 1: that is available for you. In the Skip James episode,
- 35:21Speaker 1: someone brought up Guns and Roses on the text of voicemail.
- 35:24Speaker 1: We have two Guns and Roses episodes as well. Those
- 35:28Speaker 1: episodes were very hard to write. You know why. I'm
- 35:30Speaker 1: gonna tell you why. It's not easy for us to
- 35:33Speaker 1: depict little inside disgrace in here. It's not easy for
- 35:36Speaker 1: us to depict or to dramatize live shows. And one
- 35:42Speaker 1: of these Guns and Roses episodes nearly drove me nuts
- 35:45Speaker 1: to trying to put this together. But I think we
- 35:46Speaker 1: came out on the other side, okay. And I think
- 35:48Speaker 1: you're gonna dig those episodes. Matt's gonna have all those
- 35:51Speaker 1: episodes available for you in the show notes. You can
- 35:53Speaker 1: find them in our archive of one hundred in our
- 35:58Speaker 1: gosh one hundred and where we at two hundred and
- 36:01Speaker 1: thirty plus episodes at this point. It's a big archive.
