- 0:46Welcome back to be boundary Corner podcast, along with Brian
- 0:51seagull. I am Curtis Wilson, Brian.
- 0:54How are you tonight? Big guy.
- 0:56I don't know how I am. I'm still kind of feeling things
- 1:00out, but I know that breaker Nelson has a puckered asshole.
- 1:05Yes, Thursday night. It rang.
- 1:11True all day. Today, Hokies fall 2524 to
- 1:16Miami. I hate being right tonight.
- 1:22I wanted to be proven wrong but you know, it's it's one of the
- 1:29things, I don't let it ruin my day.
- 1:32Yeah. Liberty game.
- 1:34You didn't ruin my day after after the loss.
- 1:38Did a couple things for my wife in the house and then took the
- 1:41boys out and we were riding bikes and throwing Frisbees and,
- 1:44you know, kicking balls around and neighbors came up with their
- 1:49kids kids played One minute into the fourth quarter, my PS5
- 1:55arrived. So I had plenty to occupy my
- 1:58time. Once the game was over, all
- 2:01right, were you angry that like I'm saying that like I was mad
- 2:05seeing this sucks. We lost but I was initially
- 2:10angry and it was more because of like this is this is the shit
- 2:15that we've come to expect week in week out.
- 2:18It's like the one thing that we can't expect everyone.
- 2:21Week is some degree of inconsistent inconsistency,
- 2:24whether it's on the offensive side, the defensive side
- 2:27occasionally, some snafus on special teams, which are usually
- 2:31isolated to just bad decisions by players.
- 2:35But yeah, man, it's, I was initially upset about that
- 2:40coming off what we saw last week with Liberty, like, it just felt
- 2:45like You know, another example of snatching defeat from the
- 2:51jaws of Victory with this one. Coaching coaching our way out of
- 2:55a win. Yeah, not knowing long suit, so
- 3:00many different things you can say about the last two weeks.
- 3:06Let's talk about boast of that fourth quarter first, and we'll
- 3:09get to the I'll finish with the, in the last Drive, which just
- 3:15pulled away. Say no, you said the end there
- 3:17were two damn drives. That's what I'm saying.
- 3:21Like, I'm getting the subsequent, two to three drives.
- 3:25That kind of closed out this game where we were, you know,
- 3:29you go for you go from driving to potentially going back up,
- 3:32two scores to being down, then turning the ball over then,
- 3:36getting it back with two minutes left and the shittiest
- 3:40two-minute drill. I've seen ever maybe in my
- 3:43entire life, but it's definitely up there if it's not the worst.
- 3:49So you get the all you got two minutes, you get a pretty quick
- 3:53first down and then you, it was like four plays took sixty five
- 4:01seconds when you did it was, no, what am I said?
- 4:04Ron those games, we were down multiple scores.
- 4:10First up tonight, everybody knew fucking urgency and you're
- 4:13sitting here men lesson two. It's just like 149, I think is
- 4:19when we snapped the first down and you're like, go go, you
- 4:24should automatically have the play you want in and go get,
- 4:29everybody sitting there like check realigning the protection
- 4:35and having a check with me after the false start snap and you let
- 4:4115 seconds run off the clock. I was seventeen, Seventeen.
- 4:46I think it was 17 or 18. You say 15?
- 4:48I was like, Snap It. Snap, it snap it.
- 4:50Whoa, what are you doing? Snap it but no urgency like this
- 4:56is the game. Was they were giving middle of
- 5:24the field. Those last few plays.
- 5:25And I sat there, I saw some people tweet about and I thought
- 5:28to myself shit at least you don't want to 15 yard play, go
- 5:32up there. Spiking have two seconds at
- 5:33least a fucking chance to throw it to the end zone.
- 5:36Chance to throw to the end zone. I mean chance to take a really
- 5:39long if we too got it to where it was under a 60-yard field
- 5:44goal, fuck it, roll them out there and see what he can do.
- 5:48But nah, we had no urgency was just kind of like okay we got
- 5:53this, we got this you won't talk about the two-minute drop the
- 5:56four-minute one is the one that just boggled my freaking mind
- 6:01with the interception. Yeah, we We get we can run our
- 6:16normal often, we don't need to go deep.
- 6:18We don't need to go hurry up. We were eating their lunch in
- 6:21the eat intermediate game. Completely eating their lunch.
- 6:24Oh no. What a genius Ossie decide to
- 6:28run. Let's Take a Shot guys, why not?
- 6:32And it looked like it was some sort of option route and it
- 6:37looked like hooker was trying to take what?
- 6:39Thought he was going to take him up.
- 6:40The up, the sideline further and Kayla Smith ran a skinny post
- 6:45and it was just Oh, she wrote man.
- 6:49But again it's it's not necessarily it's the timing of
- 6:53the play of when it was its four minutes left.
- 6:57And your defense has believe it or not, you know, we'll get to
- 7:01the defense in a while defense. Believe it or not, make made a
- 7:04stop or two. There was a late Drive, Brian.
- 7:08And I texted you this third and 15 and, you know, couple bad
- 7:15things have happened, but third and 15.
- 7:18It was essentially the food, the tenure of the Fuente, a
- 7:22definition, third, and 15 hint, and dry.
- 7:27Like the Dropbox looks good. The protection looks good and
- 7:31you can see the rights of developing nicely.
- 7:33It one of the camera angles what does he do?
- 7:36He fucking slips and goes lips and for me that's the definition
- 7:42of the Valenti are right there. It looks good.
- 7:45Well you drew it up. It looks nice.
- 7:47On a sudden, you fell flat on your fucking face.
- 7:50Yes. Metaphorically speaking.
- 7:52Fell on your knee, literally speaking literally on your knee
- 7:56and you had Punt the ball and that's the one that got me
- 8:03because also on that drive the big play before because I think
- 8:08it was second and six or second and five big loss is the way
- 8:13hand and looked. It looked like you know that
- 8:15post wheel combo we like to run. Yep.
- 8:18Look that and it made him to stay back there.
- 8:20And when I looked at it, He missed an easy little underneath
- 8:25drink. There was when they showed him
- 8:27going down to that knee. Or when they showed that play,
- 8:30they showed a guy coming. Not the third and 15 years to
- 8:33come up with the play before that.
- 8:34And I'm looking, I'm like if he sees that guy it's a first down
- 8:37and we keep driving but we won't do easy things, right?
- 8:42Let's hit a couple other points here.
- 8:44Obviously, the last drives are really in our memory.
- 8:50Brian, I know one guy that It has really not been on.
- 8:54His game is looped annuda. Yeah, I was, I was watching him
- 8:58today. If I mean Phillips was eating
- 9:02his lunch all day, man, Phil's was eating his lunch and me we
- 9:07can give props to DARE. Assad aerosol hairbrush or less.
- 9:13Took out. Quincy Roche is having any
- 9:16impact on the defense, but on the other side Luke was just she
- 9:21was struggling man. And you know, we had talked
- 9:23about it a couple times before this.
- 9:25I mean Luke hasn't really looked like himself since he's returned
- 9:29from his a couple game absence from covid.
- 9:32Yeah. So I'm not sure if that's just,
- 9:35that's still pulling on him there, but when he's been out
- 9:40there, he's just he's struggling.
- 9:41Specially on with with the speed rush man.
- 9:44Guys it can turn on the Jets and run the hoop, he's really
- 9:48struggled against and he gave up a.
- 9:50But what about three sacks tonight?
- 9:52Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry.
- 9:54It's nighttime. Now it was today when the game
- 9:57is really, it's true. He gave up the sax.
- 10:02He had a couple nice pops. Open some holes in the Run game
- 10:04but overall he just hasn't looked right?
- 10:07It's and I don't know if it's conditioning or something like
- 10:10that, but it goes back. That goes back to some of the
- 10:13things we're going to discuss as we get along.
- 10:16We know, verify, if likes to rotate guys, he likes everybody
- 10:19to be able to be raised, you're playing through Rishon, but when
- 10:21he's looking that bad you have to lug nuts to play.
- 10:27We know that I can hold his own right.
- 10:29Yeah. And in these kinds of
- 10:31situations, if the game is 4221 and we're beating the living
- 10:36shit out of them or they're beating the living shit out of
- 10:38us. Yeah, let him stay in there and
- 10:41get his Oops, in this case, no within the liability right now,
- 10:46there's close enough of a margin of error where if we can get the
- 10:49right guy in there, just to hold another second or second and a
- 10:53half, in a lot of cases, you're talking about the difference
- 10:56between a sack and a potential, big play true.
- 11:01You can go a couple of a couple times, your Phillips got around
- 11:05the edge and just before henin, was about to Let It Go.
- 11:10All of a sudden he's got to deal with them.
- 11:11A guy in his face and having to fight off a sack.
- 11:14So we saw that a lot tonight guys.
- 11:17And you know it's when you talk about a 1-point game those are
- 11:21the type of plays that could have potentially one of the
- 11:24thing for you. So I don't I don't know what to
- 11:27say here. Let's talk about him a hooker
- 11:30while we're here. Yeah, he played a pretty
- 11:32efficient game but some of that, that late turnover and a couple
- 11:36decisions kind of, I think Martin otherwise pretty darn,
- 11:40good day for him, I agree. Like yeah, he the intermediate
- 11:45game was working, he was very accurate in that.
- 11:48I mean, you know, you take a look at him in the day, you
- 11:50know, 2002 through the air, 70 percent completion.
- 11:55I came for 29, He had another 59 on the ground with 21 carries
- 11:59that is not obviously not a good average and its really bad.
- 12:03Brian 53 of the 59 came on the touchdown care.
- 12:08Yeah, do the math. That's like that's not.
- 12:13That's a barely a quarter of your yard.
- 12:15I carry out. They were they were ready to
- 12:17stop the, the leads and the powers, and they also sacked
- 12:22him. So, I mean, if you're doing
- 12:25those two things, I mean other than the one, the one big run
- 12:28where he was able to get to the second level and once he was at
- 12:31the second level he made them pay but he could not get to the
- 12:35second level most of the night. Hi.
- 12:37Um let's let's I'm gonna hold off because the inconsistency of
- 12:42the play calls I want to hit later because what I'm going to
- 12:45talk about and you all mr. Hooker Hooker had an OK game,
- 12:50you know hooker did not lose this this game.
- 12:53No. I mean I don't know what
- 12:55happened. With it.
- 12:57I don't know what happened on the pick with Caleb Smith.
- 12:59I know he had one ball where he just need to put a little bit
- 13:03more air. Yeah, we played an okay game, he
- 13:08put us in the positions time and time again.
- 13:12Let's flip to him, we talked about Thursday night juice,
- 13:16Herbert would be a big key. I want to look at all three of
- 13:20the running backs that we primarily play.
- 13:22Okay. First of all, I think we kind of
- 13:26know, the deal with juice the hammy being banged up, he was
- 13:28out there. Probably 35 percent of the time
- 13:31of the snaps, although they didn't run him out there on the
- 13:35first series, he looked. Okay, to me, it looked like if
- 13:39you told me he had 20 carries today, He probably would have
- 13:43had 80 yards. He didn't have the gear to get
- 13:46away. Where we've seen.
- 13:46There were times he got into Poland, where we'd see him go.
- 13:50He was getting tackled 8 to 12 yards down the field.
- 13:54And, I mean, you know, we take a look at, you know, juices
- 13:57numbers today, you know, 84 49 Six yards, a carry his longest
- 14:04was 13 so he was he was fine. He was still effective despite
- 14:08not having the extra gear, do kind of burst and turn.
- 14:11Those good plays in the great place, it's true.
- 14:16But again it goes back to what we're we talk about what they're
- 14:20seeing in Luke, we've talked about a couple things where
- 14:22they're seeing it practice. Okay, if he looks like he can do
- 14:27that, the game plan should be like, we're going to have to
- 14:30play Drive the ball. We can expect home runs
- 14:32intermediate routes. Even it when they see it that
- 14:37he's not breaking. The big one, they might come up
- 14:39a little bit more, do we? Maybe take shots, but we didn't.
- 14:42Now is this a medical staff since you're like?
- 14:45We've had so many guys that like look like they're clear.
- 14:48And then they don't play well. And then guys that report today
- 14:52and he didn't play. Yeah.
- 14:56I just I don't know what's going on with that.
- 15:00Like if guys are cleared to play they should play.
- 15:02And if guys aren't cleared good enough to play, they should not
- 15:05play this like fully dressed but just sit on the sidelines.
- 15:09Bullshit, just confuses the hell out of me, man.
- 15:12Well confuses you and makes you mad because it's like if he's
- 15:16not ready you know you need to just have him completely sit
- 15:20out, your ask them to get dressed, go through warm-ups and
- 15:23everything like no, I'll even do that.
- 15:26Well, as an element of surprise, you should about the element of
- 15:28surprise. Prize if he would cure will be
- 15:30on that, we're not playing for a whole lot right now.
- 15:34Fuck the element of surprise do the right thing.
- 15:40Again folks, as Brian said if you're in the car with your
- 15:43kids, earmuffs earmuffs the whole time.
- 15:51If they've got the, if they've got the headphones with the
- 15:57headphones on, Daddy's going to listen to his show.
- 16:01And if you're going to take the headphones off, you need to say,
- 16:04Dad, really like about yourself. Speak Your Truth.
- 16:12Okay, running back today, finally, we see Jalen whole
- 16:16crew. Get out.
- 16:18Jalen gets to touch down. 36 yards on four, carries to
- 16:23receiving to me to receiving for 11 yards of 47 total yards and
- 16:30use. You saw today, in my opinion.
- 16:34And I don't know what he was going through again.
- 16:36It's the medical staff again, not on the injury report.
- 16:39He's been out there doing some kick returns.
- 16:41Why hasn't he been truly utilized as a true spell?
- 16:44Because he is literally he is the version of her bird that
- 16:49doesn't have the fifth gear. Yeah.
- 16:52Wow. He's got much better Vision than
- 16:56Blackshear between the tackles. He got the block.
- 16:59Well, so like I just don't I don't get why he wasn't Spill
- 17:05back number one from day one, because that would have done two
- 17:09things that would have been less of a drop-off when Herbert has
- 17:13to come off the field. Number two, you actually utilize
- 17:16rain Blackshear, the way he needs to be utilized as an
- 17:19offensive weapon, or a slot receiver, and not as a spell
- 17:23back or change of pace back. True, and you keep it moving,
- 17:27man. Again, it goes.
- 17:29It's like the preparations that we go into games.
- 17:32We don't know what the fuck were doing now.
- 17:34Now, I look back to something that I said, like, after
- 17:38Blackshear got his waiver and there was that press conference
- 17:41with with Foo and talked about, you know, I hope you're ready.
- 17:48Coaching staff. You have done.
- 17:49Nothing to help this man, out to get him to plays that.
- 17:52He needs to be successful. It's like, I didn't watch the
- 17:57tape of the guy. You brought in?
- 18:00No, not at all. Or if you did, you said All
- 18:03right. Well, he did that.
- 18:04Well, but we're going to fucking square peg in a round hole that
- 18:07sumbitch. Exactly.
- 18:10At least today, they did put it back at punt return, where he
- 18:14got the majority of his yard when he ended up getting a big
- 18:2021-yard return, essentially flip the field for us.
- 18:24Although we go down, we kick the field goal down that which just
- 18:27annoys you because you're like with the 49-yard line, let's get
- 18:30it and go. And there are a couple times, I
- 18:36give him Credit in. I saw people on social media
- 18:39say, oh well why didn't you just catch that?
- 18:41You can't let that roll some of those punch?
- 18:44You can see we're coming in funky.
- 18:46Yeah. Hot returner a good to grow pot.
- 18:49Return will not try to catch those because they know only one
- 18:55thing can happen if it's bad. I mean it's a damned if you do
- 18:59damned if you don't situation because we're coming off a week.
- 19:03We're a big play like that on special teams, cost us a
- 19:06touchdown in a one score loss and I'm sure some of that was in
- 19:11the back of his mind. It being the first week where
- 19:14he's been tabbed to be the guy back there, you know, you say,
- 19:19you got to play whatever. That's obviously in his head.
- 19:21I mean, it's not an excuse but it's definitely a reason.
- 19:26And when you see a ball coming in like that, you're like, we're
- 19:30still in a position where we can win this game.
- 19:31I'm not going to lose us this game in one play.
- 19:35It's very true. It's very true.
- 19:38And again, a couple of those you can just see when they came off
- 19:42and guess what, they didn't look right, if it doesn't look right,
- 19:45don't try to get it, especially there if the coverage is closing
- 19:48and good now, by all means you got 15 yards take a risk.
- 19:53Well, I mean the style of the kick is Because they hold it
- 19:57long. It's a rugby style.
- 19:59It's not, it's not a hanger. It's very low in line drive and
- 20:03those take weird bounces. So nothing about it is
- 20:07predictable very, very true. All right, all right, so finally
- 20:14brine, my prayer was answered, my prayer was answered today.
- 20:20We get a third and short situation, and we finally bring
- 20:24in Quincy Patterson. We did it one time and one time
- 20:30it converted, but we only did it once and I just don't get it.
- 20:36There were some times today where, you know, third and five
- 20:41third and say you know what, if you're in a position where you
- 20:44think you're going to go for it. Screw it.
- 20:47Put them in the washing, you ran quarterback power and
- 20:51quarterback lead on several, third and 7 and third and sixes
- 20:55anyway. Why not?
- 20:56Put the fucking battering ram in there to do it?
- 21:00Yeah. Those third and sages and third
- 21:02and sevens folks. I wish some of you could see the
- 21:06text chain. When those happen, it's usually
- 21:10being brighter. Like we'll probably going for it
- 21:12here, right. Braun was like, yeah, 55 yard
- 21:15field goal. You just Basically went for
- 21:18quarterback lead on Third, and six or third and seven is like a
- 21:24couple times. It's like we ran it on.
- 21:27Plus h we have punished just like, what are we doing?
- 21:30It doesn't make any sense. That's see that on Third and
- 21:34long, I'm saying, oh, the coordinator is telling me that
- 21:38we're going for it on fourth down.
- 21:41Yeah, that's what I thought that's.
- 21:43That is what I read when I see someone make that That call and
- 21:47then consistently not doing that is mind-boggling.
- 21:51You after they ran that they kicked a long-ass field goal one
- 21:56time and then they punted the second time now.
- 21:58Thankfully our punter ended up backing him up deep, I think
- 22:03that was the one that ended up getting down at the five yard
- 22:05line and the defense held got a three and out.
- 22:08But still I mean that's that's a situation where you can
- 22:12potentially get try to get some points by being aggressive.
- 22:16Civ and trying to get the first down and you call.
- 22:21What I consider a passive third-down call and then don't
- 22:24go aggressive on forth. Like you can't go passive on
- 22:27third if you're not going for it on fourth or if it's as it's
- 22:31basically non-logical play-calling like we are one
- 22:37would do that. Also your guy that has
- 22:39consistently been able to pull that shit off is Khalil.
- 22:42Herbert is not on the field in those situations.
- 22:46What happened today was a today was a inconsistency of the play
- 22:50called. It was the perfect day.
- 22:53Where I swear to God, Brian, I think Justin Fuente was keeping
- 22:58a square. I think the Wednesday was
- 23:00calling some of those drives and I think he 120 130
- 23:23Go back and look at that drive folk.
- 23:25If you record it or when it shows up.
- 23:28That doesn't look like a bread cord, Nielsen Drive.
- 23:33There were other drives today with some of the past Concepts.
- 23:36Some of the things that I just saw the hooker touchdown on a
- 23:40sec Network where it's Trey. Come take Turner tape Robinson,
- 23:46excuse me, not Trey Turner. Comes motions behind then
- 23:50essentially gets on the left side of hinden runs.
- 23:53A jet fake. And essentially Hendon let's run
- 23:58go up. There were times we did that on
- 24:02the next round. We did nothing.
- 24:05Of that. I have.
- 24:06No but my conspiracy theory is Justin.
- 24:10Fuente is basically proven his friend is a terrible play call
- 24:14or by calling opposites and Essentially losing us again.
- 24:20Why like, plays like that, I'll tell you why, because what they
- 24:23do is that they give the defense a different look.
- 24:26Even when you're running a play that you run, 10 or 12 times
- 24:31again, right? It's true.
- 24:35So it, I mean, it's essentially a quarterback power, right?
- 24:41But the window dressing, makes it look different than the jet
- 24:45in motion or the fake outside Zone in the inverted, beer,
- 24:49right? So it looks different but it's
- 24:52the same thing that we've been seeing.
- 24:54So Other piece of you're making people for just a tenth of a
- 25:01second, have to wait. Unless they truly trust their
- 25:05renal, it's going to be quarterback power.
- 25:08But if you read it as quarterback power and he stepped
- 25:12and he handed it off and you stepped inside, run your guard.
- 25:16I'm sure you'd love to see linebacker step inside when it's
- 25:18going to be something going outside because you get to get
- 25:20to that second level. And put them there is doing
- 25:40The inside power before. Don't care.
- 25:44You've got to wait, you've got to wait and let the play
- 25:46develop. Yep.
- 25:48Card quarterback power. Getting eight yards, is a hell
- 25:52of a lot better than getting 50 the other way.
- 25:55And the other thing I didn't like about it, we saw in motion.
- 25:59And I don't think any time today, didn't we pass out of it,
- 26:04but that's a setup, because if you run that, and you have hand,
- 26:07and take that one step 4, Well, the linebackers are sucking up,
- 26:11so you're going to have nice, intermediate crossers like Kayla
- 26:14Smith called a beauty that 30-yard passed away.
- 26:16He called was beautiful. Yes, across that, that, that
- 26:19that 15-yard Crossing route, but it starts opening things up.
- 26:23So, you know, it's the same old thing today was different
- 26:28because there were some drives that look and is this bad?
- 26:32I'm gonna say this Prime. There were droughts today to
- 26:34look professional. Hey, Pretty much all three of
- 26:41our scoring drives where we got touchdowns looked one way or
- 26:45something that you would want to see there was consistency.
- 26:49There was seemed like a sequence that made sense most of the
- 26:56execution was there. And then, you know, we had a
- 27:00handful that just looked like we were lost and then a handful
- 27:04where it felt like the coordinator crossed the 50 and
- 27:08just Again, just forgets what to do.
- 27:14Ya like we're one of those teams that Because we have some really
- 27:21good play designs. Because we have really good play
- 27:28designs. I'm trying to figure out how
- 27:29Oregon state scored. You see if touchdown pop up in
- 27:32like they didn't have the ball. The last time I saw it really
- 27:36good play designs that even when they aren't perfectly executed
- 27:40they get positive. Yardage the most prominent today
- 27:44was that Jet Sweep late in the game second and ten go through
- 27:50my notebook here because when I saw it wrong it was a really
- 27:54good play. We ran it was second and 10.
- 27:59Think we had taken a intermediate shot, missed it,
- 28:02but we run a Jet Sweep short side.
- 28:06The linebackers have to do with they.
- 28:07Do they stay home now. They eventually flow out.
- 28:10They get in five yards, downfield.
- 28:12It was one of those plays where it was set up to say, we're
- 28:14going to be second and five or second.
- 28:17And for the unit, they grew up in miss it, we're gonna have a
- 28:20big game. That's what irritates me is.
- 28:25When, you know, okay, we just need Day, you need to find the
- 28:28play. That is going to get you in a
- 28:30position to convert. In the next play, we didn't get
- 28:36it. But you saw the setup happen and
- 28:40that's what I get more and more angry about.
- 28:42Yeah. It's like that one was kind of
- 28:44on, you know, sometimes you just either.
- 28:48Don't execute and sometimes defense just plays well, I mean,
- 28:53sometimes you got to give it, give them credit.
- 28:54They, they have the right call to stop what you call, it wasn't
- 28:57necessarily a bad call. But yeah, you know, here you
- 29:00are. But we had some drives that
- 29:03looked good like that. We have some drives up, we
- 29:05scored on then. We had some drives that just
- 29:07look look, like, we were lost, man.
- 29:10And that inconsistency is what is killing this team, man?
- 29:16It's killing us. But I mean, I think we've kind
- 29:20of think we sucked all the marrow out of the offense here,
- 29:23man. Let's talk about the defense a
- 29:24little bit. Best game they've played all
- 29:27season. I agree, I agree.
- 29:31If you had told me or Brawn, Thursday night, they're going to
- 29:35get 225. First of all, think we would
- 29:39have been like you're out of your damn shits, you say?
- 29:46I mean, did you see specifically today that really why it was
- 29:53their best game? The front seven played the most
- 29:57complete game, they played this entire year including tax
- 30:02including decks. I'd say if I'd almost go to the
- 30:06point and say especially Dax which is something that y'all
- 30:10know I have not said this year. Slander weird.
- 30:16Acts truthers. Yes, we are next truth.
- 30:21You know, we've been critical of the front seven.
- 30:24Yeah. And the secondary, but, you
- 30:26know, in particularly we've hammered, the linebackers pretty
- 30:29bad this year. We've hammered the defensive,
- 30:31tackles pretty bad, and I don't have a whole lot of slander for
- 30:36the front seven. But man, that's six packs today.
- 30:39He had six sacks. You held the pretty potent
- 30:42offense to 25 points under 400 Euro.
- 30:45He gave up one play of over 20 yards, true.
- 30:51I mean, Deanna Kings rushing stats today.
- 30:55Did he give you seen those pretty much non-existent man?
- 31:00Yeah, 15 yards. Well, me and Brian are saying,
- 31:08hey, we're glad to be wrong. Unfortunately, we didn't, if you
- 31:11told me, we held your king to under 300 combined yards, out of
- 31:15told you full of shit. But we did, we did um you know
- 31:23Dex definitely best game today after the it did not start out
- 31:27that way that first drive. Oh my God.
- 31:31He was he It fits, he went the wrong way.
- 31:34He was, he blew essentially a cover just looking where he was
- 31:38and where Devon Taylor wasn't one of those passes, he was in
- 31:41the wrong spot and it was just like it all.
- 31:44Here comes the same old axe again, but then he turned it
- 31:47around. He he got off some blocks.
- 31:53Yeah, he went General blocks. He did a good job of getting
- 31:56into the flat on several things and patches that we're going to
- 32:02the Outline like quick out. One of his best place.
- 32:05Today was did that, scramble at the are King?
- 32:08He use leverage. He basically did you saw that
- 32:11play, right? Yeah, he basically turned.
- 32:14And he basically said, you're either going out of bounds of
- 32:16your coming back in King, turn back in and he, you know, he had
- 32:20that tear but they've got that arm.
- 32:21Its load him into guys were there.
- 32:24And when we talk crime has over the years, educating me on
- 32:29Leverage, and he's like, that's what you did.
- 32:30Oh, you want to turn back upfield You come on because
- 32:34people are going to be here real quick and that's what happened.
- 32:38Yep. Exactly man.
- 32:40And he did a great job. I'm going to give another
- 32:42shout-out to Hewitt who had to war the 25 today.
- 32:46He earned the 25 today and Rob definitely his best game of the
- 32:52season by large margin or interior.
- 32:57Yeah it's got a sack today Kendricks blew up one of those
- 33:00sack early he absolutely just It was like pop, pop, neat.
- 33:03He basically hand fog, got the guy down right up to the are
- 33:07King. Yep.
- 33:09And I mean, the defensive ends played well Justice Reed had a
- 33:12good game bar. No had a good game.
- 33:14I mean, this was a complete effort.
- 33:16Rook probably had his best game of the season, as well.
- 33:20Brooke look like rough today. Yeah, getting to the spots
- 33:23popping. Not look.
- 33:26Looking like me. Finally, he where he was out for
- 33:29covid. Maybe finally got his football
- 33:33win back. The guy we have known the last
- 33:37three years. It's true man.
- 33:39I'm going to call out to plays in the secondary that I would
- 33:44say. Would that were the two worst
- 33:46plays of the day. We've been positively we put on
- 33:50the icing here I'm going to put a big ol loogie right there on
- 33:55the Apple on the cake. It's still edible, you know
- 34:00depending on who Are you might still eat it?
- 34:05I want to start with the ball where King just kind of chucked
- 34:10it towards the sideline, Chapman was playing underneath the route
- 34:17and instead of giving ground and getting a pic held ground and
- 34:23then tried to jump and make a play.
- 34:27And instead of ended up either an interception or fourth down,
- 34:31they get a first down on a third and long.
- 34:34Yeah, that he looked like he apparently he just gauge how how
- 34:41much air was going to be on that ball completely wrong and then
- 34:45was just in a position where he could make a play and tried to
- 34:48jump late. That's the only thing I could
- 34:50think of their man but he definitely misread the the ball
- 34:53in the air. The second one, I'm not sure.
- 34:57Responsibility here. But it was on the the only big
- 34:59play of the game. The Long touchdown, the gave
- 35:01them the lead based on what I saw.
- 35:06It looked like they were almost in a all-out blitz Cover 3 and
- 35:13they ran that RPO and Taylor just did not get enough depth.
- 35:17Now, he was, he could see, he was, he was five yards in front
- 35:21of where that passed was. Yeah, I'm I could be wrong on
- 35:23what the coverage was. It might have been some sort of
- 35:26man responsibility across the board on that Blitz.
- 35:29But yeah, it looked like he should have had kind of the
- 35:34intermediate to deep third. Since we were bringing the house
- 35:37and he was just too shallow and we got to beat them kind of that
- 35:42that quick post, what it was. Because it looked like as soon
- 35:48as as soon as that ball was snapped, when he hit that third
- 35:52step. He chucked.
- 35:53It like he immediately saw no one was in that zone and the way
- 35:57the leverage was. So again, the way the leverage
- 35:59was set up was, I think my Brian seem to belong coverage is the
- 36:04way it was set up. It looks like he was trying to
- 36:07turn him inside to say I'm going to turn you inside.
- 36:10There's going to be a Zone. You're going to go right into a
- 36:12Zone with someone. They're correct it.
- 36:16Like he had because he was running with him, but he was
- 36:19running with him in a, almost a trail responsibility.
- 36:23So it seemed like it was, it was kind of a cover three with
- 36:26everybody underneath going after the quarterback and just Taylor
- 36:32didn't have enough depth, where when the post crossed out of
- 36:35the, the corners Zone into the middle, he just wasn't there to
- 36:39make a play and it almost, you know, from from other
- 36:43perspectives. And it might have been a manner.
- 36:46Responsibility. But the way he got beat kind of
- 36:48right away. Didn't look like it looks like
- 36:49he thought he had helped inside. Got you.
- 36:53All right, let's go back. Let's let's kick the loogie off
- 36:57those again. Best of the day jehan's.
- 37:01Best schematic game, without a doubt.
- 37:04His best play calling game, the blood says were unique and you
- 37:12said something. And I'll say what you said to me
- 37:15about out what we did today that if we had done some of these
- 37:19other games, we might not be formed or right now.
- 37:23Yeah. I mean, I talked about a little
- 37:25bit on Thursday to I was I was saying that this defense
- 37:28consistently throughout the year is not been dictating terms to
- 37:31the offense and it felt like we finally started doing that
- 37:34today, whether it was some of the stunts with the defensive
- 37:37line or the blitz is that we were bringing we felt like I
- 37:40felt like we were actually saying You're not going to
- 37:43fucking score. We're going to hit you.
- 37:45We're going to knock your dick in the dirt.
- 37:49It felt like a defense that again I said it we they haven't
- 37:54feared us all year and look like hey you might you might think
- 37:58twice before doing some things against this one?
- 38:00Exactly. It was the first time I can
- 38:02really say that. I mean, you know, I'm not saying
- 38:05that we're turning a corner on defense, but I definitely think
- 38:08in terms of effort and again, dictating terms, this was
- 38:13definitely the best effort of the Year by far. 100%.
- 38:20And you know what? If this is the type of Defense
- 38:23Justin Hamilton wants to run, I think can be highly successful
- 38:26in this area of college football with, you know, there's going to
- 38:29score points. I mean, look at the track meet
- 38:31that broke out today between wake and UNC.
- 38:35Yep, makes me feel better about both of those games, little
- 38:40little bit. In January where we can just
- 38:48order a drink, we're going to get a leader of our choice since
- 38:54six feet apart it one of our houses in the cold get drunk and
- 38:59do it. There we go.
- 39:01Yeah, our eyes would well, you know I mean we'll still do it.
- 39:05We just might have to pay for it.
- 39:07Exactly my out there has pouches please let us know.
- 39:14You know again loss. Today brings the Hokies to four
- 39:18and four and look after, you know, essentially starting
- 39:24forward to going into what we thought, okay?
- 39:30After after Liberty to be our toughest, stretch, we can get.
- 39:34If we get to Miami five and one we can do some things because
- 39:39you feel confidence. But if we're fortunate that way,
- 39:42and this is sort of our take y'all, and we're going to just
- 39:46get into some stuff on the coaching situation and we kind
- 39:50of mentioned it last week, but this is, we've crafted their
- 39:54statement. It's our opinion that if the
- 39:57money can be found in its ten million dollars, so, if you hit
- 40:02the lottery tonight, in your Virginia Tech fan, get a stretch
- 40:05at If the money can be found, this is going to be the last
- 40:10year of the Justin Fuente era. Now, who stays and who goes on
- 40:16this staff, let that be up to the next head guy cuz you know,
- 40:19I think Braun me and you both feel that there are a few
- 40:24coaches on this staff that if the next guy walks in and he
- 40:28doesn't have like his Ace for that position.
- 40:32There's some guys it could be retained.
- 40:35Yeah. I mean there's there's probably
- 40:36a handful Let's start with the guy that we've been given a
- 40:40whole lot of love the last couple weeks.
- 40:41James, tribest hundred percent. I think he's probably.
- 40:45He's probably done. Consistently the best job on the
- 40:48staff all year. He's only - plays have been bad
- 40:52decisions and execution by the players, not any calls that he's
- 40:58made. I think he's done a really good
- 41:01job of getting his guys prepared to do the things they need to
- 41:06do, especially when When? It's crunch time.
- 41:10Yep. So yeah, I would definitely
- 41:13consider retaining him. I'd also look at a couple guys
- 41:18on the defensive side of the ball.
- 41:19You guys might laugh at me for saying that, but just based on
- 41:24their ties to the program, their ties to Virginia Retaining
- 41:31Justin Hamilton as a position coach and Darryl.
- 41:34Tapp, as a position coach would probably be a good decision.
- 41:39I'm with you on all three of those especially shy best.
- 41:42I mean, Chavez has been one of the best of special teams
- 41:44coordinator has over the last two decades, but without any
- 41:48question and depending on who the higher is, you're probably
- 41:52not going to find someone as good as him to just handle that
- 41:55for you. The tapping ham thing makes
- 41:58sense. People even set it.
- 42:00That ham was, he probably wasn't quite right for this, some of
- 42:05you quite right? Just not quite ready.
- 42:08I think he's right but I think he's not seasoned enough to my
- 42:13ready to take over that degree of responsibility.
- 42:16Especially without. I mean we thought that the
- 42:19Clay's higher was kind of a slam dunk in terms of easing him into
- 42:23the thing and that's turned out to be a fucking clown show.
- 42:27No, disrespect to Tracy claeys in his career.
- 42:30But I don't think it's been a good fit for him here.
- 42:33No, not at all. Let me know missing.
- 42:35And when we set it, the entire Team Missing.
- 42:39The. Note Spring ball summer
- 42:44conditioning stuff, true Camp, starting to season and Labor
- 42:47Day. Not 34 weeks later, you know, I
- 42:51think they can be kept app. I don't care who the coach and
- 42:55higher is next. They have to keep him.
- 42:58They have to because he lives at he breathes it you know he can
- 43:04be great. I won't throw two more names out
- 43:07there for you. Okay.
- 43:09You tell me what you think. You've got your three guys.
- 43:11I like Like those guys, there's truly to I feel like could be
- 43:15kept but two more names in interest me.
- 43:18One is Ryan Smith. Okay?
- 43:20Right. Yeah.
- 43:22He was one of the 30s under 34 24/7 last year and the other
- 43:27one. I don't know where you're going
- 43:32with your running back coach. Usually, one of the easier
- 43:39positions to fill but more This connections with junior
- 43:43colleges. He looks like he knows how to
- 43:46find guys, knows how to do the portal stuff.
- 43:50Well, where it's like, you know, that's an easy higher.
- 43:55You automatically say, you're the Juco guy.
- 43:58That's your, that's your territory.
- 44:00You're not touching anything else in recruiting.
- 44:02Look at the giucose file. We need.
- 44:05We think about those two. I think those two you can make a
- 44:08case for think. You could also maybe We make a
- 44:12case for for Coach Vise with what he's doing with the
- 44:16offensive line. Getting getting trying to find
- 44:21good fit guys. Doing good at keeping guys
- 44:24rotational where you've got guys that can play in different areas
- 44:27when you need to when a guy goes down or when a guy's not getting
- 44:30the job done. So I like what he's done.
- 44:33And again, guys, this is all contingent on who the ultimate
- 44:37big guy higher is and what type of coordinators they In along
- 44:42because obviously, you know, if the guy they hire is a
- 44:47quarterbacks coach or if a the DC, they hire is a quarterbacks
- 44:52coach, the chance of of Smitty hanging around, is slim to none.
- 44:56But, you know, if, if it's not that case, then you know, I
- 45:01think that's when you start looking to some of these guys
- 45:03staying around since we're talking about retaining and and
- 45:09not let's talk about Who the next guy should be?
- 45:18I'm thinking, man, who's your who's your who's your One A Day
- 45:21is without a doubt. It's Luke fickle, okay.
- 45:29I mean, what he's done at Cincinnati in the way he scraped
- 45:33himself up after kind of getting thrown into the fire, you know,
- 45:38with the whole Trussell thing which is, you know, I think a
- 45:41decade ago now, but how he essentially has stepped himself
- 45:45up and it's kind of turned that program into legitimately Right
- 45:53now, the best group of five. Yeah.
- 45:57School probably by a significant margin.
- 46:01Yeah, it's not no slander on UCF or anything or, you know, even
- 46:07Josh heupel down there. He could be on a short list of
- 46:10eventually, but I think his mentality, he's a defensive guy.
- 46:13He plays knows, he played nose guard, Ohio State back in the
- 46:1790s. You know, 33 and 13.
- 46:21Is a head coach. He's 33 and 13 is a head coach.
- 46:24Even with the Ohio State six and seven year in there.
- 46:28You think, love that year, you take out that year the guys, 27
- 46:34and six It's impressive, man, impressive, and that's a foreign
- 46:39aid his first year in Cincinnati.
- 46:45He's a younger guy, you know, he's only 47 years old.
- 46:53Got a long time left to coach, he's the first call.
- 46:58Okay. Do you agree?
- 47:02What he be your first call he will be my first call as well.
- 47:04I think just what he brings to the table.
- 47:09His resume combined with the way he works.
- 47:12Yeah. And what he's been able to do in
- 47:14a short period of time there at Cincinnati, I feel like we've
- 47:17seen enough Of what he's done there as well.
- 47:22So it's not it's not like such a small sample size where, you
- 47:26know, you say well maybe that's this or that's that I think
- 47:29we've seen enough where, you know, we know that this is all
- 47:33him getting this thing done. So yeah it would definitely be
- 47:38my 1A 1B is going to be for me, Todd Grantham.
- 47:44Oh man at the hot, that's a hot button.
- 47:51I mean if you can get a get a long way from the abrasiveness
- 47:56that kind of comes with that name in terms of what's happened
- 48:02with some other staffs and and fan bases, I think you can
- 48:07really It's a me. It's really a slam-dunk higher
- 48:11mean you gotta, you know, a hokie a guy that's coached here.
- 48:15Before I got understands recruiting in Virginia guy that
- 48:21how he rubs people aside has always been good in the living
- 48:25room with recruits true. And the fact that potentially if
- 48:30you make that higher you also get Tory and graze your
- 48:32defensive coordinator. That's a big one because I think
- 48:36he could get toring to come. Grant them all.
- 48:40So, he went to Tech also grew up in Pulaski so literally from the
- 48:44region Hometown boy, 1 pound voice intially.
- 48:48It's another. So do you want to say?
- 48:50It's a Frank. I but I like him as well.
- 48:53Again the torian things big because you told you tell half
- 48:58this fan base torian's coming back but you got to deal with
- 49:01Todd half on would say screw it torian's that good.
- 49:05Yeah it's the whole thing of He's coached everywhere.
- 49:10He coached. Ten years in the NFL, he's been
- 49:13in Big Ten country, he's been in the SEC now, you know, basically
- 49:19of the last 10 years, seven of the last ten years, with
- 49:23Georgia, Mississippi State, and now Florida.
- 49:29You talk about the guys who were on staff.
- 49:31The one thing you would not have to worry about with him having
- 49:35that many times played or how many coached at that.
- 49:38Many places. Excuse me.
- 49:41You would find solid hires it, probably every single position.
- 49:46There would be somebody, even though he's abrasive and they
- 49:48know he can be an a-hole, you know what?
- 49:52I know, he'll work hard. I know who put good things in
- 49:55place, so I would be opposed to that.
- 49:59Now, I think it's one of those things too.
- 50:04If you're talking about a Target demographic, to get fundraising
- 50:10up. He's not going to get your mass.
- 50:16Right along with the mass of people he is in his mid 5654 so
- 50:20he's not he's not late 60s he's he's at that age a lot of times
- 50:25guys who work for years and years to get their first job.
- 50:29He's a potential 10-year higher, he's a ten year high but it's
- 50:34also when you're talking about a guy who's that age you kind of
- 50:38start thinking about. These are the people who are
- 50:42there when the stuff was bad and it went not good.
- 50:46You hire him maybe some of those people who are making
- 50:50significant amounts of money, all over the country who are
- 50:53that age. Instead of donating five
- 50:56thousand dollars a year, they donate 20 I like Todd.
- 51:02Todd play. When I was there.
- 51:04I remember Todd Todd coach when I was there.
- 51:06I remember Todd potentially, helping what you've been saying,
- 51:11and what we've been saying, numerous times the higher can be
- 51:15great if the Investments not there, it could go sideways.
- 51:20Yeah, we're going to do Five Guys.
- 51:23The third one bronze Grover. Podium for this guy, like the
- 51:27guy Brian still on the podium for him though.
- 51:33Yeah, I like I like Marcus Freeman and I only say Marcus
- 51:37Freeman. I think he's a good look.
- 51:39If you're not able to get Luke or Todd because Luke potentially
- 51:45could go to some sort of loose, Blueblood school, that is trying
- 51:48to flip the script. Did you see what just happened?
- 51:53To Michigan today. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:56D, what happened to Penn State today?
- 51:58Yeah. Yeah.
- 52:01There's some potential for big blue blood schools that are on
- 52:05the Rocks right now to make a splash higher.
- 52:08So Loop fickle could be gone regardless of how bad we want
- 52:12him. Sure.
- 52:13So if we're looking another guy, let's look at the defensive
- 52:19coordinator for those up and coming.
- 52:23Bear cats that are you know climbing the ladder of the top
- 52:2725. Also a linebackers coach.
- 52:32Yeah, yeah. So I like I like him.
- 52:37I like what he's been able to do with recruiting in the short
- 52:40time that he's been with the Bearcats.
- 52:45I like that. He seems like a guy that can
- 52:48really relate to a lot of the youth in the areas that we
- 52:52recruit. So I think that would be good.
- 52:54He doesn't have a big history of recruiting in the state in the
- 52:59region, but he's done well, when He's dipped his toes in there.
- 53:04And he's done well across the board for recruiting when he's
- 53:09been out there. So I like it.
- 53:12You know, it's not a sexy higher but I think he's a young guy
- 53:17that can relate with the players a lot better and bring some
- 53:20interesting philosophies on defense that even jams, not even
- 53:25exploring at this point. So I think it's a win-win on
- 53:28that front. All right, the one reason he
- 53:32wasn't as high for me as he was for Brian.
- 53:34Y'all because we play a fight. Is my worry.
- 53:37Brian. And I told Brian, that's my
- 53:38worry. If you hire him and you lose
- 53:40fickle, people are going to be like you missed your big guy.
- 53:45That's why you had to hire him. And the way I feel some people
- 53:50would say is well if you're going to hire some defensive
- 53:53coordinator from Cincinnati, I'm not giving you my money.
- 53:58And it's one of those things where, again, people that follow
- 54:01it, you see how good Cincinnati's been, he's 34 years
- 54:04old. You talking about relating.
- 54:07Now, on the other hand hiring, somebody that young, lot of
- 54:11young professionals out there might be like, I love this
- 54:14higher. Yeah, I only can give $100 a
- 54:16year cool, but when there's 10,000 of those stroke and
- 54:19checks for a hundred dollars a year that will cope with things
- 54:24significantly in, you know you kind of look at it and say with
- 54:30him is kind of like the fickle thing at his age right now.
- 54:36There's only one place. He probably go too.
- 54:40That's t. Five wise and that would be Ohio
- 54:44State. Yeah.
- 54:45Andy his age right now, Vic was one of Ohio's state guy was that
- 54:48interim job but once he went, there was defensive coordinator
- 54:54under Urban for a few years went back to Cincinnati went to
- 54:56Cincinnati. He kind of knows coaching his
- 55:00alma mater as a head coach is gone.
- 55:03And for Freeman. It's still the option out there.
- 55:06Now, I threw brawny, ginormous curveball here, Because I
- 55:15mentioned one guy runs like, yeah, and then I threw this name
- 55:20out. Jamie Chadwell for everybody at
- 55:25home. I'm going to give you a few
- 55:28seconds to go on. Your smartphones are put in,
- 55:32Jamie Chadwell in your search engine.
- 55:35Okay. Jamie Chadwell is the current
- 55:37head coach and offensive coordinator of Coastal Carolina
- 55:42in. Obviously this year, they are
- 55:44having a great season and he's actually been a head coach for
- 55:49well over or just over a decade. Decade starting in D2.
- 55:54Then moving to the Gulf South Conference, then moving to the
- 55:58Big South or at Charleston, Southern, two years in the
- 56:02playoffs, then came to Coastal. A couple rough years but finally
- 56:10got them going in the right direction.
- 56:11I like him for a couple reason, a his age, he's like his early
- 56:1540s. Some people will say when T is
- 56:182, okay? That doesn't help us.
- 56:22But my bigger thing is, where he's done.
- 56:24His primary coaching is down in South Carolina.
- 56:27So for me, I think he's a guy that probably gets the region,
- 56:31okay? It's Georgia, he probably gets
- 56:33North Carolina, he probably gets Virginia.
- 56:35He played out at East Tennessee State Probably gets that reason,
- 56:40probably gets you no more virus Channel, footprint here.
- 56:44And I just feel that it would be, it would be one of the this
- 56:51is the long shot. Right.
- 56:53Okay. Yeah.
- 56:55If you're talking money-wise, I've been trying to find his
- 57:00current salary for the last couple minutes, and it's not
- 57:05been there. So let's get efforting,
- 57:08efforting, efforting, efforting Alright, his current deal.
- 57:15You're ready for brines Thanksgiving?
- 57:50Yeah. Financially, if you feel like
- 58:06you have to cut some things, you're not going to pan out the
- 58:10Wazoo out of the gate. So, you know, let me throw a
- 58:15little caveat on that here. So I said, Jamie Chadwell
- 58:19someone, that's kind of essentially similar in this same
- 58:24vein here. There you go.
- 58:27Will he lie? Only been a head coach since
- 58:432016, but his annual salaries 755,000.
- 58:48So that's another one, where two million will get the job done.
- 58:54And another young guy similar to, to Freeman that can really
- 58:58relate with These kids I think and do a good job with the
- 59:01recruiting. Albemarle Mater is University of
- 59:06Richmond so understands the area coaching and Charlotte you know
- 59:13it was a coach at Austin Peay before he went to UNC Charlotte.
- 59:18Yeah I don't think it's a slam dunk.
- 59:19I don't think it's sexy but I think similar to Jamie Chad.
- 59:22Well, it might be a pretty decent run.
- 59:25They're not always true man and the one that I threw out there
- 59:28to you. And these guys did not their own
- 59:31our list, but they didn't go top five.
- 59:33Because when you consensus things up, you have to be
- 59:35honest. I love Billy.
- 59:37Napier bronze, kind of out on him.
- 59:39I don't know why. You know, what's the best part
- 59:44of this Brandon agree with that? I didn't like Healy that much
- 59:46because I think he's too young and he's literally having to
- 59:50build a program from the base. But I like Napier coached at
- 59:57Clemson knows that region been down.
- 1:00:00Louisiana doing very good down there but I will give you one
- 1:00:02more name. You ready?
- 1:00:05This is the main man. Throw out.
- 1:00:08Your old coach. Bronson.
- 1:00:12Yeah, I mean I can speak for a little bit on him man.
- 1:00:17When I was at him and Sydney, he coached d-line one year and
- 1:00:22tight ends for for one year, definitely like a player's coach
- 1:00:29understands the relationships to give you guys a idea of the type
- 1:00:35of Coach you're dealing with. He's a guy that was enrolled at
- 1:00:41In Sydney while he was coaching and I don't want to play, I want
- 1:00:45to coach. And so as a essentially, a tapir
- 1:00:51he was commanding that respect to players and getting the job
- 1:00:54done in a high-level had said one of the best years for our
- 1:00:58tight ends, the years he was coaching tight ends, we had one
- 1:01:02that was all owed act that year. So he knows his shit and he's
- 1:01:09had success at pretty much every stopped.
- 1:01:11Since then it's good. It's going to not it's nobody in
- 1:01:17the family. Base is going to say yes, let's
- 1:01:19hire another Memphis coach after point.
- 1:01:21A and after what's going on with Mike Norvell down at FSU.
- 1:01:26But if you just want my opinion on the guy, I think he'd be a
- 1:01:29good hire. well, I mean he coached In Georgia high schools,
- 1:01:36he coached Virginia. So obviously, he's probably got
- 1:01:39some inroads here even though it was 20 years ago.
- 1:01:42He was an NFL coach, he coached down at UCF, he was out of there
- 1:01:46as own estate, he was at Toledo and then he's been at Memphis
- 1:01:49for the last four years under Norville.
- 1:01:52So guy has a ton of experience in clearly you talk about, I was
- 1:01:55in school wanting to coach. And then, makes his way to the
- 1:01:59NFL for, you know, better part of half a decade.
- 1:02:05It does say something about him. All right, Brian, there's a big
- 1:02:10elephant in the room, there is man, and this is, this is one.
- 1:02:15If you throw it on the Twitter timeline, you're going to get
- 1:02:18Jesus either either guys that love it so much that they're
- 1:02:22it's ridiculous or guys that will be added lie against it.
- 1:02:29this isn't Curtis is He grew up here.
- 1:02:40He played here, his dad was a legend here, he gets the
- 1:02:43culture. The other half, he won shit.
- 1:02:52What's he done? He's not even a coordinator
- 1:02:54anywhere. And I think I don't think rain
- 1:03:00is football X's and O's coach know, maybe on special teams if
- 1:03:07we hired him he would pretty much do what his dad did is that
- 1:03:10bhc and Coach special teams. It's true.
- 1:03:13But the whole thing is in Brian since you coached so many people
- 1:03:18think that coach has to do one thing.
- 1:03:21You know, they got a, they've got to have one side of the
- 1:03:23ball, the other. Some of the best coaches aren't
- 1:03:26exit. The no Geniuses at any of it,
- 1:03:29right? But there are little motivators
- 1:03:31The Unbelievable organizers. They're good CEOs.
- 1:03:36Yeah. And in a sense experts at
- 1:03:40managing The Works, they're not experts in any any one
- 1:03:44discipline. And with him it's one of those
- 1:03:47things. He's been an assistant head
- 1:03:48coach, he was an assistant head coach with his Dad.
- 1:03:52He was a special teams coordinator for Kirby Smart and
- 1:03:55for the last four season three seasons, he's been an associate
- 1:04:01or assistant the assistant head coach for Lincoln Raleigh in
- 1:04:04coaching tight ends. He's only making four hundred
- 1:04:08seventy thousand dollars. I think, I think he would take a
- 1:04:10HomeTown discount between two and two and a half million.
- 1:04:14If he does that you can go get million-dollar coordinators.
- 1:04:19Yeah, I mean let's go ahead and get this out of the way I feel
- 1:04:23like unless guys are Hell bent on certain coordinators.
- 1:04:29We need to be paying a million dollars for our coordinators.
- 1:04:33True. Is he in, you know, if we look
- 1:04:38at what's going on right now with with the two coordinators
- 1:04:42that we have right now we're kind of getting what we paid
- 1:04:46for. We're getting a guy that has
- 1:04:48potential but is very green on the defensive side and we're
- 1:04:52getting a guy that has a pretty good grasp of scheme but is very
- 1:05:01poor at preparing his team to play.
- 1:05:04And getting consistent play on the field, both in the play
- 1:05:08calling front and the actual execution.
- 1:05:12Be honest, truth, man. So you know, talk about all that
- 1:05:17and we and now we need to say if we're going to take a step
- 1:05:21forward, we need the salaries for those coordinators to be
- 1:05:24competitive with the with the teams that we want to be
- 1:05:27consistently. It's true man.
- 1:05:29But the other thing with Shane and Shane is kind of similar to
- 1:05:37Similar to Todd, he's changed in coaching, 20 years and and the
- 1:05:44folks who do knock it and say, well, it's Duncan.
- 1:05:48Yeah. Okay.
- 1:05:49He coached at Georgia Tech in 2000.
- 1:05:51He coached at Tennessee on her. Former as a ga 2001, 2002 2003,
- 1:05:56he was at Smith. Sippy state with Sylvester Croom
- 1:05:5904, 05 06. He was down with the old ball
- 1:06:02coach. From 2007 to 2010.
- 1:06:08He clearly was here with his dad again with Kirby it, Georgia and
- 1:06:14went to Lincoln. I think.
- 1:06:17And again, if you if you think about how his dad hired people
- 1:06:23in his dad's personality, and I know her dad's not all him, You
- 1:06:28know, Frank coached almost a decade before.
- 1:06:32Well, actually over a decade before he got here, right?
- 1:06:35Yeah. I just want to do thumb real
- 1:06:37quick. And again, I like doing this
- 1:06:39stuff live because it's kind of fun, everything everything Frank
- 1:06:46woman graduated in 1968. from 1972 to 1987 he coached at
- 1:06:54Maryland, The Citadel Murray State He was body roll some of
- 1:07:01those years and with Murray State, he was actually the
- 1:07:06defensive coordinator before he came.
- 1:07:09You know, you talk about some of the guys that he pulled in.
- 1:07:11He pulled in Wiles was a guy. He coached Bud was a guy.
- 1:07:16He coached, you know, being just because a guy hasn't went to
- 1:07:21coordinator or he's been coaching 20 years, you know,
- 1:07:27look at Indiana right now. You should enhance doing.
- 1:07:34Look at that. He was a coach from 1992 to 2000
- 1:07:4316 when he became the defensive coordinator coach got fire, he
- 1:07:46took over interim, they hired, and he's built them up in the
- 1:07:49last four years and they beat Michigan.
- 1:07:55And they've been state is when the day.
- 1:07:59Well, don't just because a guy's not been what the coordinator or
- 1:08:03a coach somewhere else. Don't let that not.
- 1:08:07Yeah, I'm probably not as high on on Shane as you are or some
- 1:08:12some folks on the timeline have been, but I'm not opposed to it.
- 1:08:17I think it would be from a, we talked about the CEO
- 1:08:21perspective. I think it would be a very good
- 1:08:24choice from that front because I think he does handle those
- 1:08:29aspects of the job. Well, I think you would be good
- 1:08:32with donors. What I don't know is what
- 1:08:38concerns me, I guess is more of the recruiting side of it just
- 1:08:42because there were very big ups and downs for him while he was
- 1:08:48on the staff. All right, hold on, can I can I
- 1:08:52can tell you what to solve that. Yep.
- 1:08:56Comes in goes to Dad and you conference call Lauren Johnson
- 1:09:01and you say Lauren. We want you on this step history
- 1:09:04or thousand dollars. You don't think that would solve
- 1:09:08some of his recruiting woes in certain places in this state
- 1:09:11that would help grabbing probably keeping their assistant
- 1:09:16from the 757 might help and you can keep it keep it moving
- 1:09:23potential there. But I also think you talked
- 1:09:25about donors, Shane there so they can say what they want to
- 1:09:30say. The people who are going to give
- 1:09:32the hundred to two hundred dollars a year that are casual
- 1:09:36Virginia Tech things and we are in some of you might be casual
- 1:09:39listening to us and that's fine because you that's your
- 1:09:43priorities and that's all but I think Shane could touch every
- 1:09:47single piece of the base, his dad to leverage the older donors
- 1:09:51himself. to sort of essential even Grantham up to the RH
- 1:09:58folks, you can grab those and then you see Shane and how he
- 1:10:02acts and you see Shane's full of energy and you see his
- 1:10:04personality And I feel like he would be one of those Innovative
- 1:10:09guys to get the kids graduating to become members of the hockey
- 1:10:13club. Yeah, so yeah.
- 1:10:16So for whatever small role it was he can also say that he was
- 1:10:23on the 99 team where he was the Long Snapper, man.
- 1:10:29Remember this folks about the 9019 If Shane Beamer was a
- 1:10:36shitty Long Snapper, the miracle and Morgantown never happens.
- 1:10:40Bingo whatever that's worth. That's going to count right
- 1:10:46there. It counts.
- 1:10:48Anything else breaking since we've been on here for it?
- 1:10:52What now we're 20 minutes or so our 10 minutes, okay?
- 1:10:58Last week, I'm not as drunk as last week.
- 1:11:04The extra 20 minutes here. We're not, we're not pushing our
- 1:11:0740 listening to that show but I'm not seeing anything
- 1:11:13breaking. I am watching some Pac-12 after
- 1:11:15dark on my end here seeing Washington, go up 17-7, there's
- 1:11:22a couple others. There's another Mac game on
- 1:11:25which I think, I'm gonna probably turn in early tonight.
- 1:11:28Master starts at 10:00 tomorrow and I do want to watch that as
- 1:11:31long as I can. If there's nothing else.
- 1:11:34Breaking Braun, let's wrap it. Yes, sir.
