- 0:00SPEAKER_00: He's known as the running gamer.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: He recently just ran two races back to back, which he's posted a few times he's not doing again.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: This is the People Run podcast.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Malik, welcome.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Two races you just did uh this past weekend, if I believe.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Had fun, didn't have fun.
- 0:22SPEAKER_01: A mix of both, a mix of both.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Like fun for sure.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: Just glad like it's over now.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Uh not so much fun because a small party wouldn't be edited at the reason.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: I do the other two and first rate.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: And I haven't honestly I had like my head and I was like, hey, like the only thing it I'll see like it is aggressive because you gotta rate like eight three eight.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: So in in that second race, I got out like I wanted to, like at five thirty-five, I was like, okay, cool, yeah, now let's start working down at that pace.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Let's really try to cast 'cause at that point after mile one, the first place guys right here.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: I was like right here.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: I was like, okay, let's start working, closing on the gap, kind of get up on his shoulder a bit, you know, work with him.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Um my legs start feeling like lead.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: I was like, uh yesterday's yesterday's 5k.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: That 1717, uh yeah, there's some drawback to it.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, well let's just hang off for dear life at this point.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Let's just break 20 minutes.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Just try to get maybe try to get under seventeen.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Anything.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: What mile did that that leg feeling kick in?
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Uh a mile and a half.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: So like halfway five K.
- 1:52SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: I was feeling it, I was like, Alright, let's just let's just hang on for dear life and just finish.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Just walk away with uh saying like, hey, I did two five K's within twenty-four hours.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: I was saying twelve, but I'm like the start of the first race was at six thirty p.m.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: on Friday.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: And then the Saturday morning it was eight thirty a.m.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, hey, you waking up.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, I was up at like five thirty, so I was up at five thirty getting ready, and then I had to get my wife ready because she wanted to run, I signed her up, and that's how it all happened, where the Friday race, I already knew I was gonna run it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: And then the Saturday race, it was like, oh, we run 313, got discount codes to this race, and my wife's like, oh, I want to come out because the club's gonna be there.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: It's like okay, cool, I'll sign up too, make it a whole, you know, family function, a family friendly function type of event.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: And then I'm over here looking at my schedules, piecing it together, and I'm like, wait a minute.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: And this says Friday.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay, so next one, next Saturday, right?
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: No.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Friday, Saturday.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: I'm like, when have they ever been like that?
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: I looked in past years, they've never been like that.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Just somehow, someway, both race organizers was like, okay, yep, I'm gonna do this Friday.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: And the other one's like, yep, we're gonna do this Saturday, and yeah, I just wasn't paying attention.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Was it the same course or different courses?
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: You have to drive different places?
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: They're all within downtown Detroit.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, but just different parts of downtown.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: Like one was at the Riverwalk, and the other one was at like uh Homeric Park where the Detroit Tigers play.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: So like they're like not even that far from each other as far as like distance, but two different areas where the courses are at.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: What lessons did you learn from doing two back to back?
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Obviously the second one went a little tougher than the first one.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: I swear I was able to get something to eat, get something on my stomach, and then I was able to start taking uh electrolytes, do some salt mix, and then when I got to the venue, do some gels and one last little salt mix before heading on the start line.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: So I think like all of that really helped me just travail a eighteen, like just give me the just strength to maintain an eighteen, but definitely I'm like I think if I came on with fresher and better legs and not so much mileage onto them, I think I would have been able to at least get low seventeen at Store.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: If everything goes right, then get under seventeen.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Is that the goal under seventeen at some point?
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's the goal.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Get under seventeen.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Like last year I did it one time at one race and it was like a sixteen thirty-eight, so it wasn't just like, oh, I got under like sixteen fifty, I got way under one time and then it just never happened again.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, I want to be able to make it repeatable and gotcha constantly do it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: So that's where I'm learning, like, hey, but what if it is really coming in with more of a straight like a strategy approach like I normally do as opposed to just trying to do some races, like no, come in with a little more intention and purpose than just doing sex.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: How do you do that, the intention piece?
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: The intention piece is like mentally picturing it.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: As a where like while if I'm on a treadmill, on running or practicing track rec, it is intentionally picturing it, which I do, but then that's just a mental side.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: The physical side is just doing all the little things like it is doing like making sure like hey, I'm not running ten miles the two days before, like say on Wednesday running ten miles, and then Thursday running seven miles, and then Friday I'm deciding to run three miles in the morning, knowing I have a three mile race after, like intentionally it would have been like, Hey, maybe Friday we don't do no running.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: And Thursday we instead of doing seven miles, cut it down to four or fresh.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then Saturday and then Wednesday ten miles wouldn't have been okay, but not so aggressive.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Like more of like a seven minute pace as opposed to I think I bounced between six like low six high fives.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay, that's cool, but we got a five K two days.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: Maybe maybe really bad.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: It's like ten miles or two days away, it's not bad, but the next day has to be very low and very slow.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: And the day of it's like nothing but the race.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Go off, yeah.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Where did the idea for the running gamer come from?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: I love how you do it, I love the little post of pixels.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: You take me back to the days.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Where'd the idea come from?
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: It's a different approach than how people share their journey.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: So I'm like, how can I still like show relevance, do something?
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: So I got the idea, I'm like, you know, let me come out of my interest in gaming and my love for running.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: And then became that idea, and I'm like, alright, I'm gonna do this.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: And just kinda just get good at it, and then in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects kinda utilizing those to create a constant uh I guess uh creative content engine in a sense where I can just kick 'em out just any day.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Like if I wanted to do daily, I could, but I'm like, I wanna I wanna split it up between like a little bit of gamer info and a little bit of like real some real information, real content.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: You see me putting down the miles and then a little bit of that every once in a while.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: I will say one of my favorites is the uh the winter one looked really cool because you had the Christmas going on.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like here's my winter mile, six hundred something.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: I was like, this is cool.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love that 'cause uh that's another thing too where I can actually like do different seasons and stuff.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: That's my thoughts like, okay, instead of doing that, 'cause I want to like challenge myself, be like, hey, let's do something different.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: And after winter, now I'm like, okay, now let's try to do spring and try to do summer and let's do different different areas as opposed to just the neighborhood.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Granted, I really run it in my own backyard.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: But I'm like, hey, yeah, let's do different spots, just do something different.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Do like a what is it?
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Donk City type of vibe.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: That'd be cool.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: Maybe so Detroit or even switch it out to something like Boston or do you or just some random city, futuristic city?
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Was that the was this your way of like, hey look, man, I'm gonna share some running content, but this is gonna be my way and also just combining who I am as a person kind of way, like was that the idea and thought?
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was a bit of that 'cause originally, like I said, like I used to post a lot of my artwork, but then since I'm like, you know, I still want to post something, but and it's funny enough, I used to have a whole separate account where I will post all my artwork, and I'm like, man, this is just getting a little too much trying to manage like two accounts when they're really both me, so let me just yeah combine them and be like, hey, this is actually the account, and I'm like, I don't want to just post here's a 3D piece and then here's a running piece.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I want the artwork piece to feel more natural than just yeah dispersing it.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: And then in a way, like uh how you know, shout out to Tommy where on one of his uh episodes that he has for the Tommy Run show, he was talking about how like finding your voice and something that feels like you as opposed to just you doing something else.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: So like what is your voice or what's something content that it's like people would look at like, oh this is this is you.
- 10:43unknown: Yeah.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: I just thought about I was like, you know, I think I'm not seeing anyone else in the writing space doing this, or if it is, it's like they may do it one time or a few times a day.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I want to do this and really like this is well like my thing.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: And it's not just because like, oh, he's doing it because someone else is like, oh, I'm doing it because it's actually who I am.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it makes it fun that way.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: You're gonna be able to show up every day.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can always show up like yourself.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Malik, or for those listening, in the background of Malik's background right now, there's like at least a hundred medals of just straight up running.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And if you're watching, you're seeing this, when did running go from like, hey, I kind of do this here and there to like, okay, I'm going all in, uh, this ain't casual no more to like look at all the medals right now.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: So I guess it went from casual to me taking serious.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: That would be like me taking it all the way back to high school.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Whoever signs up for this 5k and 10k, it will be free.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: This is my JRTC instructor letting us know, like, hey, we want to get you guys active outside of what we already do.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: And originally, and this would have been smart, I should have done this, but I was gonna sign up for the 5K because I'm like, hey, what is a 5k?
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: What is a 10k?
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna just do the 5k because I don't know anything about 10k.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: And he dared me to do a 10k only because he said, Are you scared of me beating you?
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: No, I was like 15, 16, no, I was fifteen around this time, and he was in his forks.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: I'm thinking, this 40-year-old man ain't gonna beat me?
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: Like, ah, like nah, I'm not gonna go disrespect.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: This guy's like, Oh, are you afraid of me beating you, Jordan?
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: You afraid of meat?
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Jordan's my last day, but you go by last days.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: But yeah, he was like, Oh, you afraid of me beating you, Jordan?
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: You afraid I could beat you with a ticket?
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm not afraid of you beating me, I could beat you.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: He's like, I think you can.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Matter of fact, I know you can't.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Because you're not running.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Like you're not trading, you're not doing anything.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: So I can beat you easily.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: I'm like, sign up right now.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Like, you know what?
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: I'm signing up for the static camp right now, just showing you a thing or two.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: And uh oddly enough, I know I came in the top ten, I think my time was like forty-one or forty something.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: But my age group being in like um I believe the age group was fourteen to nineteen, I came in first for the age group.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: But yeah, every there's a bell up there, uh it's from the first race I ever did, and I'm like, after that, a lot of people were like, Oh, you should try to do track, and from there I signed up for track, and I was I wanna say decent, but I'm like, that's a lie.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: I was good enough as to where the long distance coach, who was also the head coach of cross country, came over to me, grabbed me by the ear, was like, Hey, look, I just need you to try out for cross country.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: You don't have to like it.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: You could try out, but if you like it, it's not like you don't gotta really bother with anything else, you you're on the team.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Just come out to our camp and because normally there's like a two-week camp and then there's tryouts.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: You say, You're good enough, I want you to come to our camp.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: And if you don't like the camp, it's fine.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: You don't have to show up to anything else.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: So if you like it, you're enjoying it, and like you're getting along with the team and you really see time showing in, then hey, spot's yours.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: So I did the cross country camp and pretty much everything took off from there.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: Where after track I was like, you know, I'm gonna give the cross country a try and did cross country and I was like, you know, I really really like this writing thing because uh yeah, it really just kinda opened up like the idea of going to college because I was getting college letters and then actually getting faster and seeing like contributing to a team.
- 14:28SPEAKER_04: I was like yeah no, I like this.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Would you run in college?
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: So for college I ran at Lawrence Tech University that's in Southfield, Michigan, and I only ran the AK.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Unfortunately, they did not have a track team.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: Which uh me and several other people, we were kind of sold on the idea there would be one later, which later like my fifth senior year, and I was like, oh however, I did some uh unattached, so I'm like, alright, well, by the time I got a car, I was like, okay, I will just go to some track meets unattached, pay for the feeds myself, drive from like Detroit, Michigan to Saginaw or Saginaw to Grand Valley, or just drive wherever.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: I'm like, alright, I'm just driving myself at this point, signing up for meets and competing that way.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: Which uh that's that's what I did for like indoor track and some outdoor track, but mostly it was uh like as far as like collegiate eligibility standards, we only had a cross-country team, and that was like an 8K.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: And that was like the first time ever being introduced to more mile, like running more than three miles at a race pace.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it was fun.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: How'd you uh end up doing long distance after like school and stuff?
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Like what what uh drew you to long distance?
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: So the long distance after high school and college, honestly during that down period, I swear I just wasn't feeling running at all just because like the team and how things were handled on a college level, I was like, I'm just done.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: But uh my brother, he was like, Hey, we should do this thing called Spartan races.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: It's a nice way that measures speed and running and fitness, like because he like as fast as I am, he's just as strong.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: So it's always like people like okay, your older brother, he's like stronger than you, he can bench like 300, bench uh squat 300, bench 200, something like that.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: So he's well fit.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: And then it's like yeah, then it's like me as where I can do laps around this guy on the track.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: So it was like, what's a nice way to so be a hiber like, you know, what be a nice way to really like do like a fair race?
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: Because we do like it's gonna be a race, but gonna be obstacles.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: So Spartan races came into the fold, and that's where uh doing and this is where I should have never listened to my brother, because he's like, hey, we should do this thing called a Spartan Beast town, Ohio.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: I was like, sure, yeah, Spartan Beast, uh got obstacles, it got distance, sure.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: The distance was like a little more than a half marathon, and I like only in college we only did like twelve mile long rounds.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: So I'm over here like Yeah, yeah, my my exact reaction, I'm like, oh and I'm like, did you know it was gonna be this?
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: He's like, I mean I knew, but I didn't know it was gonna be more than I thought it was gonna be like thirteen something.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: I'm like And no, this guy doesn't really know much about running or distances, so I'm like, you know what?
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: I shouldn't have considered this coming from So after doing a Spartan Beast in Ohio, that's where like doing the longer distances as much as just say like half marathon came in the idea.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: But then also that's where a little after like two years doing spirit and races in 2020 was everything closed down and then in 2021 I heard of we won through one three.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Around this time I was just working at Amazon and doing like the graveyard shift, but as I'm coming home on the radio they were excuse me, on the radio they were on talking about, hey, these guys over here doing great stuff qualifying.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: I believe Lance around this time he qualified for Boston and he was on the radio talking about the experience.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: So I was like, Oh wait, there's still a running club in Detroit.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: Let me go let me check this out.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: I check it out one time in twenty twenty-one.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: I didn't really have a lot of time to commit around that time because I was just for graveyard ships at Amazon and I was still trying to figure out my way to get into my own industry.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: But in the following year of 2022, I got a that's when I started working at Nissan.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: I got a very strict schedule.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: Pretty much allowed me to actually come out in the evenings.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: And around this time too, my wife, well, my girlfriend now wife and mother of my child, uh we actually moved into a place together in Warren, and I'm like, okay, we're not too far from the city, because before I was just with my mom and Ken, that's a far drive.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: Now I'm like, okay, we got a place out in Warren, that's actually like a twenty-minute drive to downtown.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: I'm like, okay, I actually can do the commute more and be present, and it's a lot easier too.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: So running with folks that look like me, running with folks that are actually doing the longer distances only then inspire me to then later on, like, okay, yeah, I want to do the longer distances, but no obstacles this time.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I still man's a great entry, you know, close to the city.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: And well look at you now, you're crushing it.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: Get my legs back a little bit.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: I'd say more than a little bit.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: I mean what y you uh you eventually ran most recently to a 237 marathon.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Like what what helped make that happen?
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Even though 237 how I remember telling my coach, like 236, like man, my body was aching and it felt like I was I at my limit.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Like, hey, this is it.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: That 236, granted, I took way too many gels early, so after mile nineteen twenty, I had no more gels.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: So the last six I had to fight it out.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: So I was just thinking, as painful as it felt, I felt as if like it didn't feel as painful as running that two thirty-six when I had everything going right for me.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: I had all gels, solid tabs, water, everything was just on point for that one, and this one something as critical as not having enough gels and running out of solid tabs like everything was out by mile twenty and still able to throw down a two thirty-seven.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: I'm like, the fitness is there, I just I just messed up.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: I'm more than confident that's like, yeah, I think by the fall when I'm running Berlin and making sure I have everything this time.
- 21:02SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: Make sure I got everything this time.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: We're gonna see a f you know, fingers crossed, you know, we're gonna see a faster performance.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: What was having everything look like this time around?
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: Honestly, I think the the sole thing that went wrong was just getting caught up in the moment.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Because Seville having that be a pay trip to by A6, I was more excited like at being on A6 time, and so like hey, they paid me out to be here, I'm on their time because they paid me out to be here on their time.
- 21:35SPEAKER_01: So I'm like going everywhere, running all this stuff, and then it was fun, it was a great experience, but definitely like um well I'll say like looking over it a thousand times, I'm like I actually packed everything right.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: I think what got to me was just being in the same camp as professionals and seeing them get ready and what they're doing, I'm thinking, okay, I got like I'm taking it in, like, hey, these professionals getting ready, like you know.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: I just wasn't paying attention like that much.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Did like, did it really mess me up that much?
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: Like, it did.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: And then I'm over here thinking I can rely on horse gels.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, no, I can't because hey, never took any gels.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm in a whole different country.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: They have whole different types of gels.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: So didn't even know what kind of gels they were handing out.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: And I'm literally thinking, I shouldn't have gone to the running store that was like less than a mile away from like the hotel.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: And inside that running store they had more.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know like, yeah, I shouldn't have at least one or two gels just in case.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: But I was like, like, no, I got everything.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: I don't gotta I'm gonna spend I'll be fine.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so uh long story short, the difference is um not getting caught up in the moment even if I find myself being surrounded by different people who can potentially run faster than me.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: It's like remember stay to what's been working.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: Don't get caught up in what other people are doing.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: Even if they are so much as professionals, it's like okay, they're professional for a reason and I'm here to run my time and I got here for a reason.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: Like I done everything a certain way, don't change it up now.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Like if I am gonna change it up, it's like I have plenty of time to change it and practice the change before getting to the race.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: Oh, the start line.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: What would you say is like the biggest biggest conception, misconception, sorry, of training?
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, you mentioned it was a training that helped um you know with mileage.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: That's a good question.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: I kind of stopped on that.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Can you break it down a bit?
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I got you for sure.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like think about it.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: You ran a 237, people train a certain way, everything's high mileage, feel this way, feel that way.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, and essentially you you all got there, you saw these pros, you kind of did it that way.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Like, what would you say is the biggest, you know, people look, I want to mimic this, want to mimic that.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Like Yeah, I think I got you now.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Um I guess the biggest misconception is a lot of people, and this is what I see a lot on just from conversation I have with people and also on social media, that a lot of them they have to train a certain way.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: And it's like pro or even individuals I see online that, oh, I have to run a hundred plus miles.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: That's where I know a guy who's trying to break 240, he's gonna do a hundred miles plus people running less than a hundred miles faster times, or vice versa.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Some people run a hundred miles to get two hit, like they do hit faster times.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Some people like I think one of the pros are one of the like a fast elite guys who was at LA and they're like they were asking people a question, how many miles do you put up a week?
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Some people able to say 125, 110.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: This one guy said his peak was seventy seventy miles.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: So that just goes to show you it's like as like much you can take from other people you gotta remember what's holding true to you.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: Don't get caught up.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: And that's one of those things where mileage and training are certain people do certain training splits or certain like uh pace progressions.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: Like I see some people like, hey, yeah, I'm not doing like KK's.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: No uh one mile repeats at a five K pace.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: And that's great.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: But some people you can cheat for some people they can cheat the same results going 10k, half marathon pace, or gold marathon pace.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have to be a 5k pace.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I see that often.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: People see the plan online.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Okay, copy paste.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna copy that, I'm gonna do it.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: And when they don't get the same results, it's like, oh man, did I do it wrong?
- 25:58SPEAKER_01: It's like maybe the wrong thing is you trying to emulate or copy someone else's thing.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: It's like, yes, you can grab the workout, but you can always adjust to yourself.
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: You don't have to do like exactly, and then when you don't hit it, and then you're like, oh man, I'm not feeling like it's this or that.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: It's like, nope, you just need to adjust it to you.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: Don't adjust it to what they were doing.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: What was that like?
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: First international trip being a marathon, ASICs, Spain of all places.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: What was that experience like?
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was exciting.
- 26:31SPEAKER_01: It was a exciting experience, a fun experience, and it's something that I'm like.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: Man, I wish I could have more of these.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, I just know I just know like look easier said than done, because hey, even um those who done it like Asia and Atlantis, they're like, hey, even then since they've been with ASICs for almost two years now, they're like, ASIC's never done anything like this for us before.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: This is also like a large uh promotion event to drop the shoe, the Super Blast 3.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: I was like, Yeah, I didn't had no clue what shoe they were dropping until I got there.
- 27:08SPEAKER_01: Because it was like, oh, like I remember being told you can't say anything about the trip.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: I'm like, dang, I can't even tell people I'm like, I don't I'm not gonna say a shoe.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: I don't even know the shoe.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: Like I do want to say I'm going to Seville to run a marathon.
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: My coach's like zip it, don't even say anything.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: I'm like I mean that's cool, but like someone's gonna be wondering when they see these high mileage, like going up 90 miles five weeks.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: I'm like, hey, like me over here, it's like, what are you training for?
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: I remember several times when everyone's like, hey, I'm just staying fit to get ready for my training block in the fall.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, cool, I'm gonna run twenty miles at this case.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: They're like, why?
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I just got I I just gotta do it.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: I'm with my coach right now.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: Like, you're working with your coach during the down season?
- 27:53SPEAKER_03: I'm like, hear me out.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: It's gonna pay off.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: Just anyone want to do 20 with me?
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: They're like, no, dude.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: I'm like, alright, that's cool.
- 28:03SPEAKER_02: So I'm just saying.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: I'm looking at my coach, I'm like, no, it's funny because by the time she told me I could actually start letting people know, that was when a lot of people were like, okay, actually we're gonna get ready to do longer miles or different things at different times, like waking up early to do different things, and I'm like you don't want to wake up at like nine to run at ten, like no, I got a twenty mile run to start the block.
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: I'm like Alright, that's cool.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: I'm like, you know, it's cool, it's cool.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: No big deal.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: I'm just like, I just wanted to tell them, like, hey, I'm running a marathon in space.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: It was funny 'cause by the time I was tapering, everyone was like starting to get ready in February or January.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: I'm like, alright.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: And they're like, dang, I thought you were down for for a long run today.
- 28:53SPEAKER_02: I'm like, uh actually I got a marathon in February.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: I like a look I was able to at least tell some people, and they were like marathon happening in February.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: I'm like Seville.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Seville, where's that at?
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: It's like Seville, Spain.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: They're like Oh, out of the country.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah, out of the country.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: They're like, Seville, what what part of that is the US?
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: Like, that's the funny part.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: It's not there.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: What was that to finally let it out, share, posted, like, hey, I just ran Seville Marathon.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: Well, how was the race for you?
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: But um running the race, that was exciting.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: I will have to say like doing my own research on it as to where Seville is amongst one of like the top five flattest forces in the world.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: And like yeah, I see why.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: I definitely hate that I did the whole shorting on my own self with the whole um nutrition thing or gels, but besides that, it was a fun race and I met some great people out there and even while running out there was just like seeing Seville, going over some of the bridges they have out there.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: Not like these bridges are anything crazy, but like just seeing the city and like a beautiful city too.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: And just taking it all in, I'm like, wow, I'm actually in a whole nother country running a marathon.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: And which funny enough, I'm like, yeah, take this as practice for my next race and all that preparation.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: So it was a great all around.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Even though the mix up you mentioned, did you feel like you got a sense of like unlocked belief, like, man, I could go faster if I lock these gels in my next one, I'm gonna hit this number.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I think had I locked in the jails, I think I would have actually hit a faster time, but then I'm like, you know what?
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: It's cool because I can take this lesson and kind of just do with this for a bit, only to let this like be uh even faster time for for my next race.
- 31:09SPEAKER_01: Like definitely I'm thinking like how I locked in in Chicago and got out of the 236 and how like two hours thirty-six minutes and fifty-two seconds, and then at Seville, and it works kind of weird.
- 31:23SPEAKER_01: I realize they go off gun time, then chip time and the gun time is two hours thirty-seven minutes and eight seconds, and I'm like, I'm well within my PR.
- 31:34SPEAKER_01: Like not like a ridiculous amount, nine minute minimum.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: We're talking about like a couple like ten twelve seconds at best.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: And then according to my um the ship time I tied my PR.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: And then according to my Strava or my watch time, I beat it by like two seconds.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: So two hours thirty-six or thirty seconds.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: So I'm like kind of that weird disparity of I'm like, you know what, I'll just go off to official time 'cause people are gonna look me up, they're gonna see that 237.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I'm like, you know, I'll just go with that official time.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: I'll go with the official time that which is the gun time, I'll stick with that.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: But um knowing that I was like within that reach.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: I'm like, you know, it it gets me excited to think about like no, I can keep training the way I am and build up some speed during this time and then by my training block be more than ready to get after it and come my next marathon, and I'll be more than ready to but not like break because two thirty-five, but definitely see if I can get up under or get close to two thirty I guess.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: No, that's gotta be a great feeling, man.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: Like you mentioned, this one felt better regardless of the time.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: You had a gel mix up and still was like within seconds of your previous PR, like the next block's gonna be insane.
- 32:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: You did NYC half, where you went off.
- 33:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: How that's uh happened.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: Man, um honestly, NYC half was way before Seville, as to where ideally I wanted to do NYC half as like that marathon checkpoint.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: Or not marathon, uh that half marathon checkpoint before my spring marathon, and I was looking at an April marathon.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: And ideally I was looking at Eugene after so I was like, okay, yeah, I can do NYC half, do Eugene, plenty of time to do an enforce correction, like yeah, that's about five, six, six weeks out.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh yeah, I can really throw down in New York and then kick it over to Eugene.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: However, um fate has something different in mind.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: So I was like, Okay, I only have about a good four-ish weeks to recover.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: Put in some good like put together like a good fast training block.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: I'm like, can't be really anything fast, we just gotta look at maintaining and then throw down in New York because I'm like, there's not much I can do other than just wake the legs up and be like, hey, we got we got something else on the block.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: But yeah, New York that was fun.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: And uh definitely that was a whole experience where I'm like I will like I love like the city and experiencing it as a tourist and then a runner.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: Definitely and it was fun too, because me and my wife wrote it.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: I was able to bring the family out too, so they were able to experience New York.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: And MJ, man, he was just having a ball out there, so it was fun to see his experience.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: Funny enough, I'm like, yeah, just think about it on the subways where I'm like, man, I gotta run a car.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I feel silly for being in a run car.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: Talk about, yeah, let me drive everywhere.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah, no, New York traffic.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: I'm like Nah.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just it was it was Yeah, no.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: I was like, you know what?
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: It was cool just driving from the airport to the hotel in Manhattan.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: I was like, but at this point I'm like, alright, like once I found out I kinda took a bus and then took a subway to the hotel, because the hotel I picked out was close by to a subway station.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I should just I should have just busted and then hopped on the subway.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't be cool, but you know, I was worried about my wife and she was like, hey, we got a car seat, we got a baby, so I'm just thinking, like, hey, let me be the provider, get everything, so like, hey, we don't gotta worry about it.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: We got a car, we should do what we gotta do, put them in the car seat, we'll be alright.
- 35:31SPEAKER_01: But uh once uh after a while we saw like other families too, and how they were doing it, we're like, we can do it.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, once we started doing it, I'm like, I should've had more faith that we could have done it.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: But definitely like me and my wife, we work on this as a team and MJ just a rock star where when we got on the subway, it was all fun and it would make things easier.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: So touristing New York was fun.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: Running or prep work for the race, I'm like, yeah, this is uh this is not it in a sense.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: Like I love New York, I definitely love it as a tourist, but as a runner, I'm like, Alright, I gotta prepare way ahead of time because I'm thinking, okay, yeah, let me try to show to the start line about a half hour before everything.
- 36:20SPEAKER_01: Traffic to get there was something.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: I Ubered there.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: And it was something to get there, the bridge was traffic, and then by the time we got to Brooklyn, everything would close in.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: It felt like everything would close down.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: So like the driver, she was like, Okay, let me try to do this way, this way, this way.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: All these shoots is blocked off.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: And I'm telling the driver, like, alright, just drop me off here.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: Drive's like, no, I gotta drop you off close.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: I'm like, just drop me off here.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: Like, I could I could walk.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: It's fine.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: And then by the time I'm getting there, like the logistics of just like back check and then trying to go through the metal detectors, which I'm like, I love the metal detectors.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: Golly, there were so many people that were there.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: We're just like big, just crowd going into these metal detectors.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: I'm like, just standing around, and by the time I got through the metal detectors, now it's like, okay, now I gotta find my corral.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: And everyone got a personality because I'm trying to tell like my bib says A.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I gotta get to corral A.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: This is corral E.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: They're like, I'm not letting you through.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: I'm like, my my bib says A.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: Like yours is E.
- 37:28SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I'm gonna be ahead of you.
- 37:31SPEAKER_02: So I had to get someone to be like, Can you usher me over?
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Like, okay, yeah, we'll let you all go over here do this thing.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: So by the time I got an A now more personalities, 'cause I'm like, they had like a guy that breaks like 120.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: I'm like, cool.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: I wanna be ahead of him because I want to ideally run faster than 120.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, when that personality's like, no, I'm not like I don't care what you're trying to do.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: I'm like literally I'm just trying to get ahead of the guy that's 120 because I want to run a faster time than an hour and twenty minutes.
- 38:01SPEAKER_01: They didn't care, so I had to just shuffle my way through some folks until we get to the start line.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: It was uh it was a headache getting through some folks and literally I didn't have no like I couldn't even warm up or do anything, so I'm like, yeah, this yeah this was a dog fight.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: But happy I got on the course final and then running it, kind of just letting off some steam, it was fun.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: And by like after a little a little after a mile before I passed the guy with a 120 pace finally because I was sitting there and say, like, where is he?
- 38:32SPEAKER_04: I'm like, is he going fast on 120?
- 38:34SPEAKER_02: I'm like looking at my watch, I'm like, I know I'm on pace.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: Is he on pace?
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: Like, dang.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: But yeah, no, New York, like racing it like the the course was fun.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: Just the logistical side, I'm like, it was a nightmare.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: Like the most like when it comes to logistics, but that's also because they had over thirty thousand people running a half marathon, and I'm like, Yep.
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: Alright, I've never been a part of that before.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: But like thirty thousand, that's close to like a marathon.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Like Yeah, marathon numbers.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Some places under that for sure.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, some places under that, and like for a half marathon, like I think Boston this year was close to thirty thousand.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think a little over that, but yeah, yeah, pretty much the whole field, yeah.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm like, thirty thousand for a half marathon?
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: I'm like, my goodness.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: Metal detectors I appreciate.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: I I can definitely I can definitely appreciate the level of security.
- 39:29SPEAKER_01: I'm just like it just felt crazy to be just about how many people were there and how like like it just stacked that's where I'm like, no self.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: If I'm ever doing this again out in New York uh race, I'm like, I gotta show up early, early.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: Well not just any race.
- 39:45SPEAKER_01: Any race that's hosted by New York roadrunners.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: And this is like something that gets you into the big race, like one of the world majors.
- 39:53SPEAKER_01: I'm like, you know.
- 39:54SPEAKER_01: Early, early.
- 39:55SPEAKER_01: Treat this as a world major.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, pretty much at this point.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: And and it's growing.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, for sure, it is growing.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: I'd love to see it.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: Did you feel those logistics and all those uh roadblocks, if you will, stop the time you want to hit, or you still hit your time and maybe could have just done better anyway with better uh I think I couldn't have done better.
- 40:18SPEAKER_01: Like I wanted to get lower, like I did one hour, fifteen minutes, thirty-five seconds.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: So I'm like it ain't nothing new.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: In that sense, I swear I'm like I knew I could hit it because I hit that time several times in like my warm like okay.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: Just now I can literally say no longer 116, now I'm like one fifteen.
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: But definitely I felt like had every had the stars aligned, I kinda been one fourteen.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: But even if so, everything was there.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: I really felt like maybe if I warmed up or had a time to it literally, this is so funny, like uh retie my shoes, because normally I tie my shoes and then I warm up.
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then I warm up and then I retie my shoes again.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: Oddly enough, I was on the course around mile eight, I noticed my shoes are untied, and I'm like, Alright, I'm gonna just step off to the side, I just tie my shoes.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: After I retied it and I just got right back into it, I'm just like, Alright, whatever happens, happens at this point.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Let's just finish it.
- 41:18SPEAKER_01: And I'll just see like a 115, I'm like Man, I could have like I could have just locked in with the group I was with because I was with a solid group of people.
- 41:26SPEAKER_01: We were catching folks too.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I couldn't have uh maybe I wouldn't have been like 115 high or one fourteen.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: Well one fourteen high or one fifteen low around there, but one fifteen mid, I'm like, I'll take it.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: You know, no, ain't nothing nothing wrong with that, especially have to like step off to the side of the race and be like, alright, let me just tie my shoes.
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I feel like you gotta reti a few times before you before you go off if you can't I spent way too much time sitting around shivering in the cold, trying to put my bag and bag check, and then trying to do the metal detectors, and then go through my corrals.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: Way too much time there where my mind wasn't thinking, hey, let's tie our shoes again.
- 42:11SPEAKER_00: You do in Berlin in the fall, another international race.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: How how how excited you are for that one?
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: Sounds like we're gonna go for a goal here.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I'm excited for that one.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: The the goal is just try to break two thirty-five or get it close.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: Break two thirty-five, try to get close to two thirty.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm excited because now it's kinda like you know, I got a lot of time to really do sports correction, like more time than I think I was given last year.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: During this time I was able to go to a sports therapy clinic near me uh known as Ram Athletics.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: They looked at my back and they saw I had like a knot in my back.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's been there for a while, but uh I just made it no time.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: Uh since March now, they done a lot of like pressure point work and a lot of like hobby theory.
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: So now I'm like, I don't want to leave like feel it as much as where you like not a big knot, but like a minor uh muscle balance.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: Minor muscle balance, I swear it's like it was preventing like my right arm from kind of like really like a full swing.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: It was like I not even like a half swing, it was I guess three fourths of a swing.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: It's kinda weird to describe, but like I wasn't really able to like really throw my right arm back or be able to bring it up as much.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: I was still able to bring it up, but not like up all the way, like 'cause at first this injury only happened due to a uh a mu uh shoulder injury when I was in the gym a couple years ago working out, trying to lift some weights to get stronger for spark racing.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: So when I first started going to do all this physical therapy work, my shoulder was fine now.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: At first it was hard for me to raise it up like this.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: But yeah.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: I guess there was still some work was needed to be done on my back and I just never bothered.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: Well not bothered more like it was my shoulder they were focused on.
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: So when they saw full mobility and shoulder, they're fine.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: But going to get my back checked out and really I just went there just to do a full body like flush.
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: They're like, hey there's just some balance on your back.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: I'm like, oh like were you ever injured before?
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: I told them that like probably they didn't check the back.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: So now getting that resolved.
- 44:29SPEAKER_01: It's not fully resolved but definitely from where it was uh we're about at like a 85%.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: That opening your stride more essentially now you can use your arm swing more?
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah like now I feel the difference where I'm like opening my armstring more uh arm swing yeah more and then I kind of noticed too where I guess a lot of like pain or any I guess management in my pain how my body would manage things and try to make sure like the back is fine.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: Now that that's not there I'm really feeling more like wow I'm really kicking out these five thirties or five twenties.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: I feel my arms and like my a whole body getting sore as opposed to like oh my gosh I just feel sore but the more my like a focus on my back 'cause I guess my body was trying to keep that in place or intact.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:17SPEAKER_01: It's like fighting antagonistically yeah.
- 45:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah so now it's like okay we can spread the energy, spread the wealth kind of deal.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: And now I'll feel like more of a whole body sore.
- 45:25SPEAKER_01: And since then I'm like okay I can keep pushing it and keep getting cupping therapy while pressure point therapy and all in all it's just been a good thing to help open up my stride and have my body like work more like uh sufficiently on energy as opposed to wasting any energy that was trying to prevent this little imbalance becoming more than what it is.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: That's uh exciting not just because you're gonna train and and run a lot more but like now you got more arm swing to work with man and Berlin plenty of time to train I know all right but there are a few ideas she mentioned I won't share it out here.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah oh that's gonna be fire so okay training block coming to Malik thinking back on all these running years now you know you've been running a long time man how big has the Detroit community and and the run club been for you to be where you at now yeah I know like I said it's like been running for close to fifteen years now and thinking back after college I was just kind of dumb with the sport.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: Seeing how the Detroit community came out and like getting involved and seeing it now that's like it's really huge.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: That's where I I can do a race like these past two races for example I I know someone or I know like a group of people now.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: It's not like yeah I go to a race it's literally just me but by the time I get there I know people I see people I may know some of the volunteers or I may even meet the race director.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: They're familiar with oh yeah I know we went through yeah no Lance Joe they talk other things about you and several other people out there.
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: So now it's like I don't feel alone in a sense.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah and most definitely I'm meeting folks from all over innocence of like other run crews in Michigan and they're like oh yeah we know we we run through a three and like they might not know about me but they definitely know the club definitely know the club crew yeah like I know a guy who I ran several times against for this for the Friday race and he's like yeah I heard we run through a three we ran against each other last year and it's just a fun time talking to them because by the time I was like getting ready for the start line he's like bleak I'm like oh Hans I'm like yeah now I know like yeah now we know it's gonna be some fun competition just like really dig how like the community is or even just in running itself Malik if you were the own character of your own gaming video game you had to draw him what would that character look like definitely I'll probably had to say some traits that look like me but I'll probably throw like a bigger after just just because and then like also try to like say if I had time 'cause yeah I could make this jersey but like try to make like a sick jersey that has we run three and three on it or if not that like some that has like the city of Detroit on like either a map or throw back to uh something that I was doing a while back.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: Like doing like clothes design in twenty twenty I had a little bit of that but I was like the money I would donate towards like other funds and researches uh not research uh other funds like nonprofits like food pantries it's called a can't stop Detroit I'm like yeah maybe something like that do like a signature that has either the city map or have something embroidered not embroidered but something that involves like kind of like a SIG logo design.
- 49:02SPEAKER_00: Malik appreciate you coming on everyone listening go check out Malik he's doing some cool stuff in the running space thank you for listening this has been the People Run catch you on the next one guys take care there we go
