- 0:01Speaker 1: Hi, as from the Overland Journal podcast, and I'm here
- 0:05Speaker 1: today with Brazilian overlanders Sergio and a lady. And we're
- 0:09Speaker 1: sitting on the beaches of Baja in their two thousand
- 0:13Speaker 1: land Rover Defender one tents.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Exactly a chamaca What mean yea sounds in Spanish Mexican
- 0:25Speaker 2: Spanish chamaca amazing it is.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Yeah. So we're actually sitting inside the back of their Defender,
- 0:32Speaker 1: which they've driven here from Brazil.
- 0:34Speaker 3: We're going to take a brief break and we will
- 0:37Speaker 3: be right back. This week's episode is supported in part
- 0:41Speaker 3: by I Caamper to make innovative hardshell and soft sided
- 0:45Speaker 3: roof tents that are designed to survive long term overland use.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Their revolutionary X cover won the Overland Journal Editor's Choice Award,
- 0:53Speaker 3: eliminating the bulky PBC cover and also allowing for the
- 0:57Speaker 3: fitment of crossbars for carrying bikes and kayaks. Their Skycamp
- 1:02Speaker 3: Mini is another award winning design that provides a hardshell
- 1:05Speaker 3: tent in the footprint of a much smaller clamshell model.
- 1:09Speaker 3: This is the perfect solution for smaller vehicles or on
- 1:12Speaker 3: vehicles where rack space is dedicated to other systems. I
- 1:16Speaker 3: Camper believes that the best times are those spent traveling
- 1:19Speaker 3: discovering the world with those you love most. You can
- 1:22Speaker 3: find out more about their quality tents at icamper dot com.
- 1:27Speaker 1: So why don't you guys tell me a little bit
- 1:29Speaker 1: about yourselves and how you came to end up.
- 1:32Speaker 2: On the beaches of Well, we start traveling two thousand
- 1:36Speaker 2: and fifteen because we decided to change a life, right
- 1:40Speaker 2: because before before twenty fifteen, we had a project with
- 1:45Speaker 2: homeless people and straight dogs that we just took like
- 1:49Speaker 2: a seven years working with this in some Paulo where
- 1:53Speaker 2: we live, and then we decide just to change, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 2: let's do something else because we were at that time,
- 1:59Speaker 2: we were four one for two years old, right, and
- 2:02Speaker 2: then okay, so it's time to stop and stop buying
- 2:04Speaker 2: stuff and make money like crazy or trying to you know,
- 2:07Speaker 2: have better stuff every day and live the life. So
- 2:10Speaker 2: and then we start traveling all the way from Brazil
- 2:13Speaker 2: to Argentina and to Alaska. This was the first plan.
- 2:16Speaker 2: The first plan was, yeah, the gear was to hit
- 2:22Speaker 2: Alaska and come back in one year.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Wow, but then.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Will be seven seven years now. It's so we are
- 2:31Speaker 2: living like this. It's okay, amazing.
- 2:33Speaker 1: So when you were in Southlo, imagine you were doing
- 2:36Speaker 1: some work with the homeless and with some street dogs
- 2:39Speaker 1: for the projects that you were doing there.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it actually it was something uh English, it's okay,
- 2:49Speaker 2: it's okay, yeah, but this this was not our actually
- 2:52Speaker 2: our work, but this was something how do you call
- 2:54Speaker 2: it an English? This is volunteering or volunteering for four
- 2:59Speaker 2: hours selves because this was something that we create for ourselves.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Then we used to do every week, you know, you know,
- 3:06Speaker 2: this was just go into the street. We have a
- 3:10Speaker 2: like different routes we did every week because we know
- 3:13Speaker 2: where the people are there and then giving them support
- 3:16Speaker 2: you know, like food, the clothes, blankets or whatever for
- 3:19Speaker 2: the people and for the dogs.
- 3:21Speaker 4: And we had help with his parents and our friends.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Yeah, so people are helping us with stuff, you know,
- 3:27Speaker 2: also food because we were doing a sandwich and coffee
- 3:31Speaker 2: something like that. And then one guy or another we
- 3:34Speaker 2: try to rehabilitate them. I don't know in English is
- 3:37Speaker 2: like this, so bring them to also give another chance
- 3:40Speaker 2: the ones who ask because we didn't have resources for this,
- 3:44Speaker 2: but we can. We could find people that could do
- 3:46Speaker 2: something more than we were doing. Yeah, a job or
- 3:51Speaker 2: or whatever.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Yeah, because you get into that, like what inspired we'd.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Like to Yeah, we'd like to help. Yeah, just to
- 3:58Speaker 2: try to because you learn a lot because you are
- 4:00Speaker 2: dealing with people that they and you know what was
- 4:03Speaker 2: curious for us that not many, but a lot of
- 4:06Speaker 2: the guys we met the street, they were living four years,
- 4:10Speaker 2: they had companies. Sometimes they were really successful. But the
- 4:14Speaker 2: problem was once they start drinking, because many of them
- 4:18Speaker 2: they were on drugs, on alcohol, whatever, but that the
- 4:21Speaker 2: most the worst was the alcohol. So they lost everything,
- 4:25Speaker 2: the family, that nobody wants them, so they start living
- 4:28Speaker 2: on the street. Remember one guy we were giving some
- 4:32Speaker 2: help to him, food or whatever, and then started talking
- 4:34Speaker 2: with us. He was an Italian teacher, teacher. He was starting,
- 4:38Speaker 2: you know, speaking Italian, so engineers. But they are on
- 4:42Speaker 2: the street.
- 4:43Speaker 4: In Brazil and many places the homeless people have done.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Yeah it's different than United the North America.
- 4:52Speaker 4: And we start bringing food for the dogs because we
- 4:56Speaker 4: bring sandlies and the people.
- 5:00Speaker 5: Take half and for the dog and half.
- 5:03Speaker 4: And one day his father says, oh, we need food
- 5:07Speaker 4: for dogs too, because the people don't eat too much.
- 5:10Speaker 2: For they're sharing with the dogs. So we start bringing
- 5:13Speaker 2: food together for dogs.
- 5:16Speaker 4: Because this we start the project with the dogs because
- 5:19Speaker 4: traveling is complicated people, and the dogs is you know
- 5:25Speaker 4: dog in South Americans, Central America. Here in Mexico have
- 5:29Speaker 4: street dogs.
- 5:30Speaker 2: So first the idea was was to travel to just
- 5:33Speaker 2: change life. But many people and also in Brazil, they think, oh,
- 5:37Speaker 2: we sold everything to save the dogs around the world.
- 5:41Speaker 2: This is life's a big life. We want to change life,
- 5:45Speaker 2: we want to do something different, but we wanted to
- 5:48Speaker 2: add something nice, you know, so this was we were
- 5:51Speaker 2: doing already. So okay, let's feed the dogs around the world.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's the origin of your name.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like dogs World something like this. And because
- 6:04Speaker 2: this is an expression of having resilt.
- 6:06Speaker 5: We make make volunteer works.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Along the way, along the.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Way experience to wow, what was your most memorable one
- 6:18Speaker 1: so far?
- 6:19Speaker 2: In Ecuador, it was a lady that was she also
- 6:23Speaker 2: gave up everything. She was a chef from a really
- 6:26Speaker 2: known hotel in Ecuador. It's a caden and big ones
- 6:30Speaker 2: and she was living to make a long short story shorts,
- 6:33Speaker 2: she was living at the right at the beach. There
- 6:36Speaker 2: was like a large, really fancy one. But the water
- 6:39Speaker 2: destroy everything, mostly everything. So she was the hotel was
- 6:44Speaker 2: not working anymore, but she was the only one that
- 6:47Speaker 2: was living there because of the dogs and horses, goose cats, whatever.
- 6:54Speaker 2: So she rescues everything and tried to you know, make
- 6:58Speaker 2: like a sanctuary for this animals there and was right
- 7:01Speaker 2: on the beach. So every morning we were like walking
- 7:04Speaker 2: around with like I don't know, fifty sixty dogs and
- 7:08Speaker 2: then giving a beth you said in English to the
- 7:12Speaker 2: horses at the beach and doing like a therapy with
- 7:15Speaker 2: the salted water because it's good for the skin for
- 7:18Speaker 2: some dogs. Was really nice.
- 7:21Speaker 5: Yeah, very good.
- 7:23Speaker 2: But it was nice because she gave nice. She gave
- 7:26Speaker 2: up everything for this and still doing this. There are
- 7:29Speaker 2: many other stories, but this one was one that could
- 7:32Speaker 2: teach us a lot.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Let's talk about the Defender.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, that's a.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Really really interesting origin story as well. So you decided
- 7:46Speaker 1: to change your life go traveling. You needed a vehicle exactly, So.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Why Actually I always wanted to have a four by four.
- 7:57Speaker 2: We didn't have resources before the all things started with
- 8:02Speaker 2: we were buying a new apartment at that time. You
- 8:05Speaker 2: have like a line refurbished with all the furniture that
- 8:08Speaker 2: people show up with like a showcase it's like this.
- 8:11Speaker 2: You call apartments so people can go there with all
- 8:14Speaker 2: the furniture and everything. And one of the rooms had
- 8:16Speaker 2: a book from a couple from Brazil. We didn't know
- 8:19Speaker 2: at that time. They did around the world tour, a
- 8:21Speaker 2: trip with the Defender one time, and I just saw
- 8:25Speaker 2: the cover. When I saw the cover, this changed everything.
- 8:28Speaker 2: So no, I want to do write this exactly this.
- 8:31Speaker 2: So this was only one picture that changed the whole thing.
- 8:37Speaker 2: One picture, and we even know what they were, what
- 8:39Speaker 2: they were doing. And then after this day that I
- 8:42Speaker 2: saw this picture, we used to Yeah, but we used
- 8:46Speaker 2: to come back to see the apartment measures and take
- 8:49Speaker 2: measures everything, and I was always at that room looking
- 8:52Speaker 2: at the book, pictures and everything. And uh, after years
- 8:56Speaker 2: we met them, we went to some talks with them
- 8:59Speaker 2: and it was a really nice We are still friends now.
- 9:03Speaker 2: They have like a magazine now in Brazil. We were
- 9:06Speaker 2: writing for them there also. But the thing is, you
- 9:09Speaker 2: don't realize it was just one picture. So maybe what
- 9:12Speaker 2: we all are doing for many people around they just
- 9:16Speaker 2: can this. I think this happened with many people. They
- 9:18Speaker 2: just look at one picture and that this maybe this
- 9:20Speaker 2: can change their life or something. You never know right
- 9:23Speaker 2: for us was like this. So because of this picture,
- 9:26Speaker 2: I decided for the defender. And also it's a square.
- 9:30Speaker 2: It's like a box. You have more and more space, yeah,
- 9:33Speaker 2: and everything, and you have more space inside you fit everything.
- 9:38Speaker 2: And they were a vabe in Brazil. They were expensive
- 9:41Speaker 2: for us, but we work and then we managed to
- 9:44Speaker 2: buy this one.
- 9:44Speaker 1: So there are quite a few.
- 9:47Speaker 2: There are lots. There are lots, yeah, because they used
- 9:50Speaker 2: to be assembled in Brazil. Also there was a factory there,
- 9:53Speaker 2: so you can find many, many defenders that we have
- 9:56Speaker 2: a group on Facebook. There are more than five thousand
- 9:58Speaker 2: people only Brazil. Yeah, they stop production. People know that interesting.
- 10:04Speaker 1: So was it difficult, I guess to find one that
- 10:07Speaker 1: worked for you or was it pretty easy?
- 10:09Speaker 2: What's easy? But it's tricky because the also they are
- 10:13Speaker 2: there are many of them. You need to you need
- 10:15Speaker 2: to know what you look for because they could be
- 10:18Speaker 2: damaged and because they are all a looming so you
- 10:21Speaker 2: are you look outside. So it looks pretty good because
- 10:23Speaker 2: there's no RUSS or whatever, but the engine suspension this
- 10:26Speaker 2: can kill your pocket. So it's complicated.
- 10:29Speaker 1: How did you know to look for that?
- 10:30Speaker 2: Did you have internet? Basically everything? Everything you can imagine
- 10:36Speaker 2: everything you can imagine about the defender, good parts, bad parts.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Everything you just google and everything is there. And the
- 10:44Speaker 2: community around the world, they are huge.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Yes, I've never seen am like the community.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Yes, for us is common. If you're driving and you
- 10:53Speaker 2: cross a defender, doesn't matter. We stop. This is funny
- 10:56Speaker 2: because it's automatic. Both stop and then we we have
- 11:00Speaker 2: each other is like friends because we face the same problems.
- 11:04Speaker 5: If happened.
- 11:06Speaker 2: This guy, if the guy doesn't wave, there's something around that. Yeah,
- 11:12Speaker 2: he doesn't know what he's doing. Yeah, but this is
- 11:14Speaker 2: something others saying. It's very nice about the defenders.
- 11:18Speaker 1: So about the defender. What happened after that?
- 11:22Speaker 2: We we fitted like very simple. We did like a
- 11:25Speaker 2: platform in the back, so wemoved the back seats and
- 11:28Speaker 2: we did a platform with the draw right on the
- 11:31Speaker 2: back and a mattress only this. So we drove to Pataguoni.
- 11:34Speaker 2: We did like a Patagonia.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Everything we had normal.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Yeah, we were working what's thirty days over. We did
- 11:45Speaker 2: some some things before, but not like this. And then
- 11:49Speaker 2: we came back and then decided, okay, we go to Alaska.
- 11:52Speaker 2: We want to do this but American whatever, And then
- 11:55Speaker 2: we worked an year to finish, like change the whole
- 11:59Speaker 2: setup inside. So we we keep it with the platform
- 12:03Speaker 2: on the left side. I built a cabinet for a clothes,
- 12:08Speaker 2: kitchen and everything else table on the back door, and
- 12:11Speaker 2: a rooftop tent the kitchen and yes, and owning on
- 12:14Speaker 2: the side only. So this was the setup that we
- 12:17Speaker 2: used for for Alaska, and then we change again and
- 12:20Speaker 2: again and again.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Yeah, when we met in Ecuador, was this setup exactly
- 12:29Speaker 1: the setup from before, not how it is now.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Yes, yes, it was a rooftop tent exactly the origional
- 12:37Speaker 2: roof and like mostly people travel.
- 12:39Speaker 5: We traveled two years and a half with this setup.
- 12:43Speaker 5: When we decided living here, we need to change.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Because tent was good for travel, but for leaving seven
- 12:52Speaker 4: years open close, open, close.
- 12:56Speaker 2: And people who travel like like you guys, you know, like, okay,
- 12:59Speaker 2: we took a really nice shower, now we need to
- 13:02Speaker 2: close the tent to get out, right, and it's amass
- 13:05Speaker 2: and a tent it's dirty, and then you are always
- 13:08Speaker 2: thirty and okay, so it was good to now then
- 13:12Speaker 2: let's change.
- 13:13Speaker 5: More space really stay inside the.
- 13:17Speaker 2: House for the weather and everything exactly.
- 13:21Speaker 5: Living complicates.
- 13:25Speaker 2: All the time, so we used we wanted to have
- 13:27Speaker 2: something different to be inside when the weather is good
- 13:30Speaker 2: or not, or even if you want to just stay inside.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Yes, And so how did you go about doing that?
- 13:36Speaker 1: Because you did the Ali cab conversion exactly and you
- 13:41Speaker 1: change the interior as well. So where did you end
- 13:44Speaker 1: up doing that?
- 13:45Speaker 2: And how the idea? Because we want to sell everything
- 13:48Speaker 2: and change the defender. The first idea was to was
- 13:53Speaker 2: a crazy idea for us and was not impossible. It
- 13:55Speaker 2: was not possible because we didn't have a place to
- 13:58Speaker 2: stay or people to help. But my idea was to
- 14:00Speaker 2: cut the defender from the first door to the back,
- 14:03Speaker 2: remove everything and build up a camper like a box.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I was in contact with a guy in Germany and
- 14:08Speaker 2: he did a really nice project. Many people are copying
- 14:11Speaker 2: him because it's really really perfect. But it was a
- 14:14Speaker 2: complicated you know, to buy all stuff would be also
- 14:17Speaker 2: very expensive, and we need time and stay in one
- 14:20Speaker 2: place and people to help and everything else. So the
- 14:23Speaker 2: only option was to okay, so if you want to
- 14:25Speaker 2: go in be inside, the car will be the rooftop
- 14:28Speaker 2: pop up roof. So I started looking at this and
- 14:30Speaker 2: then I contacted the people from Lucab in the United States,
- 14:34Speaker 2: actually we talked about more than a year, more than
- 14:38Speaker 2: a year, yeah, because I was you know, you need
- 14:40Speaker 2: to make money is not cheap. Anything for over lending
- 14:44Speaker 2: is not cheap. So or you buy yourself or you
- 14:46Speaker 2: you you buy like done already right, So and then
- 14:50Speaker 2: we managed to go to visit over an expoint flag
- 14:54Speaker 2: Staff twenty seventeen, so the owner of Lucab was there,
- 14:58Speaker 2: so we managed to talk about everything, and they had
- 15:01Speaker 2: this roof in Seattle, and then we could have a
- 15:05Speaker 2: really good deal because also I will sell everything. I
- 15:08Speaker 2: had the roof, the internals, the panels, owning in tent, everything,
- 15:13Speaker 2: so I could make some money also and pay for
- 15:15Speaker 2: the rest. And then uh, this is how we did.
- 15:19Speaker 2: So after the flag after flag stuff, we close the deal.
- 15:22Speaker 2: And then we were driving up you know, through Nevada
- 15:27Speaker 2: and everything California, Oregon to Washington, and on the way
- 15:31Speaker 2: I was you know, advertised on internet. So we sold
- 15:34Speaker 2: everything in.
- 15:34Speaker 5: The roof roof we had a big.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Lack no, yeah, because where I can find someone to
- 15:41Speaker 2: buy the roof with everything? And I end up in
- 15:45Speaker 2: a forum about the vendors in the United States and
- 15:49Speaker 2: I put the advertisement is this, I said, Okay, on
- 15:53Speaker 2: there and only one guy answered me, and he said, okay,
- 15:56Speaker 2: I want this roof, And I said, okay. The problem
- 15:59Speaker 2: is I can't ship this anywhere because it's big and
- 16:01Speaker 2: heavy whatever. And it will be available in Washington, in Seattle.
- 16:06Speaker 2: I'm from Seattle. Okay. Another thing. This will be available
- 16:09Speaker 2: in two weeks. Oh, no problem. I'm traveling and I'll
- 16:12Speaker 2: be home in two weeks. So it was meant to be.
- 16:14Speaker 2: It's meant to be. So what's perfect was like a
- 16:17Speaker 2: clock for us.
- 16:18Speaker 1: So you used what you had to be able to upgrade.
- 16:21Speaker 2: I guess exactly. Mostly everything we have here, not everything,
- 16:26Speaker 2: but big part. We all. We are all recycling because
- 16:29Speaker 2: the draw Yes, I removed the drawing. I did this
- 16:32Speaker 2: a corridor and so we can walk around inside. So
- 16:35Speaker 2: the same way I remove here, I did the other
- 16:37Speaker 2: boxes and then I changed the boxes the wood I
- 16:40Speaker 2: used to other stuff. So we are always using and
- 16:42Speaker 2: reusing stuff you have. Yeah, yeah, smart like the sink.
- 16:48Speaker 2: The sink were found on the street in Mexico, brand new.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Cabinet Marco Overland Expo Overland Marco from it is a
- 16:58Speaker 4: friend of us over the next help us to build this.
- 17:01Speaker 2: I did the project and about the material with Hin
- 17:04Speaker 2: and then we made this together.
- 17:06Speaker 1: It looks great. Yeah, and there's a lot of space
- 17:09Speaker 1: in here.
- 17:10Speaker 2: It feels quite sta This was the idea. So we
- 17:13Speaker 2: lost a little bit of storage space. But at the
- 17:16Speaker 2: same time, if you don't have a lot of space
- 17:18Speaker 2: to put stuff, you don't have a lot of stuff,
- 17:21Speaker 2: which is easier for traveling. Right. And our idea is
- 17:23Speaker 2: to the concept for us is I'm driving, I want
- 17:27Speaker 2: to stop and sleep. I just go from to the
- 17:29Speaker 2: front from the back and I can sleep inside. And
- 17:31Speaker 2: if I want to open the roof, okay, I can
- 17:34Speaker 2: open the roof and sleep on the top. So so
- 17:36Speaker 2: to have this option to walk around and really leave
- 17:39Speaker 2: inside the campus, so you need to exactly yeah, and
- 17:44Speaker 2: this is one. So if the roof is closed, we
- 17:46Speaker 2: are we can sit here like where we are right now,
- 17:49Speaker 2: and we can do wherever we want. So this is
- 17:51Speaker 2: the idea.
- 17:52Speaker 1: So originally when you were doing the first build, what
- 17:57Speaker 1: types of things did you do? I guess in terms
- 18:00Speaker 1: the suspension or lights or those modifications.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Well, engine is all stock original. I just changed the radiator.
- 18:08Speaker 2: But yeah, so we upgrade the suspension. So engine stock,
- 18:12Speaker 2: as I said, but suspension we changed the shocks the
- 18:16Speaker 2: big bares from the Hafirmo, which is the big ones.
- 18:19Speaker 2: The springs to lift to two inches lift right, what else?
- 18:22Speaker 2: I think? Only this actually to lift two inches higher
- 18:27Speaker 2: that so yeah, just that and nothing else, I guess.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's good for us.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Is send you learn work in the car, work in
- 18:37Speaker 4: the car, because when we start to travel, we.
- 18:41Speaker 5: Don't know about the car.
- 18:43Speaker 2: And mechanics, about mechanics, and I had to learn.
- 18:47Speaker 5: We need learn something.
- 18:49Speaker 2: If someone is this, the ones who are listening right now,
- 18:54Speaker 2: they know what I'm saying. If they have lab rovers,
- 18:57Speaker 2: Yeah they don't break like people say they break because
- 19:01Speaker 2: all land rovers they are really tough. You can do everything,
- 19:03Speaker 2: and they don't care about the car. So it's gonna break.
- 19:06Speaker 2: It's a machine, right, But if you really take care
- 19:10Speaker 2: and the maintenance and preventive preventive, preventive and maintenance. This
- 19:15Speaker 2: is the key. So we always do.
- 19:17Speaker 1: This super important, especially when your vehicle is your home.
- 19:22Speaker 1: You want to get ahead of it so that something
- 19:25Speaker 1: doesn't happen and then oh I can't go to that beach.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Yeah exactly, A good time.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Yes, is more difficult or you want to make life.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Easier because also this there is this thing because people
- 19:38Speaker 2: think that normally we do really crazy stuff and we
- 19:41Speaker 2: don't do this because we go, but we need to
- 19:43Speaker 2: come back. And it's a different thing that if you
- 19:45Speaker 2: if you have a rig like this and you go
- 19:48Speaker 2: whatever word they want to use, car, camping, over landing, whatever,
- 19:52Speaker 2: doesn't matter for us, go to a place camp and
- 19:55Speaker 2: then come back for a weekend. You can do crazy
- 19:57Speaker 2: stuff doesn't matter because you have a home, you have
- 20:00Speaker 2: money because you're working every day in a regular job,
- 20:02Speaker 2: and you can do whatever you want because the Monday,
- 20:05Speaker 2: if something breaks, you just go and live it off
- 20:08Speaker 2: at the shop and then you go work. But with us,
- 20:10Speaker 2: it's you'll be you'll be there, right we're stuck or yeah,
- 20:15Speaker 2: you don't know.
- 20:16Speaker 1: You don't have a dedicated mechanic exactly.
- 20:20Speaker 2: So it's like we don't look for trouble. But if
- 20:23Speaker 2: you need to go to a place where we're gonna,
- 20:25Speaker 2: we have to pass through really bad you know areas
- 20:28Speaker 2: we do. But it's not something that, Okay, I go
- 20:31Speaker 2: to that mountain because I know there's a lot of rocks,
- 20:34Speaker 2: it's steep and whatever. Now, have you.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Had any mechanical issues along the way because you've been
- 20:39Speaker 1: on the road for.
- 20:39Speaker 2: A long time. We have a few, but like a
- 20:42Speaker 2: bad was problem a mechanic now, but I mean we
- 20:46Speaker 2: work a lot in the car.
- 20:47Speaker 4: And the worst was the Jackson jack Yeah, we had
- 20:52Speaker 4: like that in almost seven years.
- 20:54Speaker 2: We had like a really we've got really stuck at
- 20:57Speaker 2: the place because we broke down was three times only
- 21:00Speaker 2: the others because I was I need to stop because
- 21:04Speaker 2: I need I know something is gonna be going bad,
- 21:06Speaker 2: so I need to replace it. I mean, like, okay,
- 21:10Speaker 2: we are dead here because something break three times three times.
- 21:13Speaker 2: And the worst was in a I told you was
- 21:15Speaker 2: in a going driving the Dempster Highway to the Arctic Ocean.
- 21:21Speaker 2: So right, we stop at Ego Planes to fill a
- 21:24Speaker 2: tank diesel and water because this is what they are
- 21:27Speaker 2: selling there for us. They must know this. And then
- 21:31Speaker 2: when we just arrived at the design to toyak to
- 21:35Speaker 2: the engine dive and then yeah, I managed to work
- 21:40Speaker 2: in a pump or do something the primary one and
- 21:43Speaker 2: we could drive down again. But yes, it wasn't enough fault, yes,
- 21:47Speaker 2: ding and in September, so it was for us. We
- 21:53Speaker 2: are Brazilian, so it was pretty cold. But but yeah,
- 21:56Speaker 2: but we balance because of the order. Right about Realis,
- 22:00Speaker 2: the northern lights was so beautiful. So anyhow we could
- 22:03Speaker 2: manage to drive to Kenmore, close to the border. But
- 22:06Speaker 2: there it was enough, so we close to benefit right
- 22:10Speaker 2: to Lake Louise. Close to Lake Louis, we stay like yeah,
- 22:16Speaker 2: we stay like two days. They're trying to fix I
- 22:18Speaker 2: changed the pump, but it was the injection pump. I
- 22:20Speaker 2: couldn't do nothing, so we hired a too, and then
- 22:23Speaker 2: we went to a place in Kenmore. They tried to
- 22:26Speaker 2: help us. Would be crazy expensive to fix it. They
- 22:29Speaker 2: were saying something around five thousand dollars, like labor and departs.
- 22:34Speaker 2: And then I said, okay, so you just fixed something,
- 22:37Speaker 2: fine tune so I can drive and I from there.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I called to my mechanic, our friend in Tijuana, Mexico,
- 22:43Speaker 2: can we fix this there? Come over? So we drove
- 22:45Speaker 2: all the way down with the car like crazy, you know,
- 22:48Speaker 2: like like a clown. I don't know, a clown rig
- 22:52Speaker 2: And then we we fixed in Tijuana because it was.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Going to be less expensive to drive from Canada.
- 22:58Speaker 2: If you so there will be like five thousand dollars
- 23:02Speaker 2: in Mexico. Expend eight hundred dollars and if you add
- 23:05Speaker 2: all the driving because we're traveling, it was really bad
- 23:08Speaker 2: the engine, but we could travel so and this was
- 23:11Speaker 2: our destiny actually anyway, so we were driving down because
- 23:14Speaker 2: of the winter.
- 23:15Speaker 5: And works in the car together.
- 23:19Speaker 2: It's a really good friend, really good friend. We can
- 23:22Speaker 2: use his shop and teach us a lot. It's an
- 23:26Speaker 2: Angel Ricardo. Yeah, really good, really good guy.
- 23:33Speaker 3: And a special thanks to this week's sponsor, The Medic.
- 23:36Speaker 3: When you're heading out, you don't want anything to hold

- 24:00Speaker 3: the demands of outdoor use and comes with a handy

- 24:08Speaker 3: that you can rely on and enjoy for years to come.
- 24:13Speaker 1: So you've been in Mexico for whole life?
- 24:21Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, but we come and go. You were coming
- 24:25Speaker 2: and going to Canada, United States and Mexico. And during
- 24:29Speaker 2: all these street countries, we were like parking the car
- 24:32Speaker 2: and backpack into other places. So we did to Europe,
- 24:38Speaker 2: we did Morocco, in Africa, we did Asia like Vietnam, Thailand,
- 24:43Speaker 2: a bit of China. So and then we come and go.
- 24:45Speaker 2: But here driving if we put all together like two
- 24:48Speaker 2: and a half years, maybe last year, we stand here
- 24:51Speaker 2: for we stay for a whole year because of the
- 24:54Speaker 2: pandemic and they close everything in the beach is everything right?
- 25:00Speaker 1: So if they closed, what was that like? Being here?
- 25:04Speaker 2: Very was really sad because like the Malicon, the main
- 25:08Speaker 2: street there and the water was all the rest everything
- 25:11Speaker 2: was closed and you couldn't anybody could walk at the
- 25:14Speaker 2: beach and the beach is like this one where we
- 25:16Speaker 2: are now, you couldn't access. So the access to every
- 25:19Speaker 2: beach we have, they were right at the entrance so
- 25:22Speaker 2: you can't pass through. So the idea of people really
- 25:25Speaker 2: stay at home was not easy.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Did you find a place to stay here that wasdible
- 25:30Speaker 1: or yeah, we we rented.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Nice, actually we did last year. We didn't feel the
- 25:37Speaker 2: pandemic was perfect for us. We were in a good place,
- 25:41Speaker 2: was not expensive, car were safe and parking lot there,
- 25:44Speaker 2: so everything was fine. Lucky, really lucky.
- 25:48Speaker 1: A few nights ago, we were sitting around eating dinner
- 25:51Speaker 1: and you guys told me a story about how you
- 25:53Speaker 1: appeared in the local newspaper. Is that in the pause
- 25:57Speaker 1: in Tijuana, Tijuana one.
- 26:00Speaker 2: And almost into television. We didn't want to so this
- 26:03Speaker 2: is why we because because we are pretty took the
- 26:10Speaker 2: shots because the want one.
- 26:14Speaker 6: And when we asked for in the place, we don't
- 26:20Speaker 6: have the document, only the passport.
- 26:22Speaker 5: It is possible the yes, I don't know.
- 26:26Speaker 7: I don't know you yeah, let's go other times and
- 26:31Speaker 7: they put the shots and we asked about the document
- 26:35Speaker 7: the certificate and no, no, the certificate we sent for
- 26:40Speaker 7: in your mail.
- 26:42Speaker 6: Took the both shots and we start asking for the
- 26:46Speaker 6: six Kate. I know you don't have the search, Kate,
- 26:50Speaker 6: but you need the cake and the cut icates.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Never never because when we we we were actually it
- 26:58Speaker 2: was really close when we were at the mechanic because
- 27:01Speaker 2: we're working a car and then we saw line and everything.
- 27:03Speaker 2: So they are giving the vaccine because we saw an internet.
- 27:07Speaker 2: So let's go then and ask and they said, oh,
- 27:09Speaker 2: how you are and we're like our age to get
- 27:12Speaker 2: the shot, and oh, you just today come over and
- 27:14Speaker 2: you have something passport and said yes, so you just
- 27:18Speaker 2: come and you can get and so we took the
- 27:20Speaker 2: vaccine and then you go. We went to a room
- 27:23Speaker 2: to wait for twenty minutes. Everybody do that. So they
- 27:25Speaker 2: gave us a paper and we asked then before we
- 27:27Speaker 2: are a foreigner, so it's okay to get the vaccine.
- 27:31Speaker 2: We had all the stuff that we needed. No, it's
- 27:33Speaker 2: it's not a problem. So after we did that at
- 27:36Speaker 2: the room, they gave us a paper where you feel
- 27:39Speaker 2: your numbers, your names. You're like a Seitzene number they
- 27:43Speaker 2: called curb. So this is the number they can put
- 27:46Speaker 2: on the system. So you get the certificate that is
- 27:49Speaker 2: telling you, okay, officially you were vaccinated. So we did that.
- 27:52Speaker 2: We took the two shots, but never that the certificate
- 27:56Speaker 2: never came to our email, which this was what they say.
- 27:59Speaker 2: And then she and then he started calling to almost
- 28:04Speaker 2: to the president. Almost no, not jokes. So she ended
- 28:09Speaker 2: up talking with the director of UH being a start.
- 28:13Speaker 2: They called I don't know an English that careful all
- 28:16Speaker 2: this stuff. So he was the main guy that was
- 28:20Speaker 2: dealing giving the orders for everything in Tijuana, and the
- 28:25Speaker 2: guys was answering us, and then they stopped answering, and
- 28:28Speaker 2: all the solutions they were giving was not possible to
- 28:32Speaker 2: do because we know we are not citizens.
- 28:34Speaker 1: System obviously for citizens, Yeah, your certificate exactly in order
- 28:40Speaker 1: to call you right because you're traveling internationally and if
- 28:45Speaker 1: you need to present vaccination.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Exactly, they don't have it exactly. System because of the
- 28:54Speaker 2: United States sent a lot of like a bunch of
- 28:57Speaker 2: vaccines to Mexico because I think they hell a deal
- 29:00Speaker 2: were something to open the borders whatever, so they gave
- 29:02Speaker 2: a lot of vaccines to the cities that make border
- 29:06Speaker 2: with the United States, which Tijuana also, so I think
- 29:09Speaker 2: they start vaccing everybody, including US and many other travelers
- 29:13Speaker 2: without knowing the next step, which was the certificate. So
- 29:17Speaker 2: after all people were answering and then they stopped. And
- 29:20Speaker 2: then she was angry because this is my wife. She
- 29:23Speaker 2: is very you know, like straight with this. No, I'm
- 29:25Speaker 2: gonna have this certificate. She called to the newspaper, Oh,
- 29:30Speaker 2: this is our story, press exactly, so this is the story.
- 29:33Speaker 2: What do you guys think you can help us with something?
- 29:36Speaker 2: Then right away they answered, of course, right, it's a
- 29:38Speaker 2: big story for them. And then this guy, every this director.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Every Tuesday, they give like a press conference or something
- 29:46Speaker 2: only for the media in Tijuana. It is not open
- 29:50Speaker 2: for the public, just so they know what is going on.
- 29:53Speaker 2: And then they kept putting the newspapers whatever. And the
- 29:56Speaker 2: guy said from the newspaper said, Okay, you guys go
- 29:58Speaker 2: there because we'll be there with this guy and we
- 30:01Speaker 2: during the conference, we're going to tell him that you
- 30:04Speaker 2: guys are outside because they want to shock, you know,
- 30:06Speaker 2: let's see what you're going to do. And we were there.
- 30:08Speaker 2: That's that's to be fun. Why not. We don't have
- 30:11Speaker 2: nothing to lose, right, Yeah. But end up that the guy,
- 30:16Speaker 2: this director, the guy was really really nice with us.
- 30:19Speaker 2: After end up everything, he called us personally. We talked
- 30:23Speaker 2: with him. He called it to the immigration to see
- 30:25Speaker 2: what's going on, what they can help it. So at
- 30:28Speaker 2: the end they said, okay, what we can offer you
- 30:31Speaker 2: is helping you get the residents, the temporary residents. Wow,
- 30:36Speaker 2: we need so with this with the residents, we can
- 30:40Speaker 2: they they will give us the curb, the number that
- 30:43Speaker 2: we need and then we can get a certificate. So
- 30:46Speaker 2: this is what we are right now.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Did you get on the front page of the newspaper?
- 30:50Speaker 2: Yeah, printed on the internet and the same Yeah, the
- 30:53Speaker 2: same day, we went to some oxos just for fun.
- 30:56Speaker 2: This is like seven eleven right here in Mexico, and
- 30:59Speaker 2: well they sell the newspapers and we were the front
- 31:02Speaker 2: page of every was fun. And then Televisa, remember Televisa
- 31:06Speaker 2: the main call for us. Okay, we want to make
- 31:09Speaker 2: an interview, but just to make noise, you know, but
- 31:12Speaker 2: there was not necessary.
- 31:14Speaker 4: And when we was in the front of the place
- 31:17Speaker 4: waiting for the guys to call us, and the reporters
- 31:23Speaker 4: recorded report.
- 31:24Speaker 5: Yeah, the microphones and hello.
- 31:28Speaker 2: With the camera, you know, like intervening. It was a
- 31:32Speaker 2: lot of noise, but it's okay. It was fun. Now
- 31:35Speaker 2: let's see, right, if we can get the certificates so
- 31:37Speaker 2: we can travel. Yeah, we are still waiting.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Okay, So before you were famous overliners, what did you
- 31:50Speaker 1: guys do for work in Brazil? And how has that
- 31:53Speaker 1: changed now? I had school bus, school bus.
- 31:58Speaker 5: School bus thirty thirteen.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Years Yeah, but it was her own business. She won
- 32:05Speaker 2: the bus. And because I heard it different in the
- 32:07Speaker 2: United States, right, people to start together, but I couldn't.
- 32:13Speaker 2: She had like ninety kids every day. It's crazy and
- 32:16Speaker 2: driving some Paolo no man no for three years and yeah,
- 32:23Speaker 2: and then I I got back to my job.
- 32:26Speaker 1: High stress situation for me.
- 32:31Speaker 2: It was for me because it's too much responsibility. When
- 32:36Speaker 2: and when we started, we started picking up kids and
- 32:40Speaker 2: delivery to seven schools and the period of one hour,
- 32:44Speaker 2: so we had to get all the kids and deliver
- 32:47Speaker 2: and pick up the other ones in seven different schools.
- 32:49Speaker 2: So it was too much. After years, more like less schools.
- 32:54Speaker 5: Yeah, let's school marks.
- 32:57Speaker 2: On the way, so it was way easier. It was
- 32:59Speaker 2: way your job. Yeah. And I used to work with
- 33:03Speaker 2: paper industry. I used to sell parts and whipment for
- 33:07Speaker 2: paper industry in South America. Yes, so I travel from
- 33:12Speaker 2: My responsibility was from Venezuela to Argentina, South America. So
- 33:17Speaker 2: I used to travel every week.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Our travel travel a lot, and for me, I drove
- 33:23Speaker 4: a lot.
- 33:23Speaker 2: And we mixed now now mix travel and grow.
- 33:29Speaker 1: So there's a question that I ask every single guest
- 33:32Speaker 1: on the Overland Journal podcast, and that is if you
- 33:35Speaker 1: could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would
- 33:38Speaker 1: you go. That was a very quick answer by because.
- 33:42Speaker 2: This is on our plans.
- 33:46Speaker 1: It's the next to eat huh, so this is your plan,
- 33:53Speaker 1: This is the plan, tell me more.
- 33:58Speaker 8: In February last year, last year, February, February, February, I complete,
- 34:05Speaker 8: Oh yes, for February twenty four, she will complete fifty
- 34:10Speaker 8: because she's forty nine years old.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Oh I think.
- 34:13Speaker 9: And my plan before the pandemic and it was this
- 34:18Speaker 9: my birthday in but I don't know now no, but
- 34:26Speaker 9: after this everything is better.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Down with our plan is this is the idea and
- 34:32Speaker 2: ship this the defender of Europe and.
- 34:35Speaker 10: We we want we want ship the car when everything
- 34:40Speaker 10: is better, because for us Brazilians, we have only three
- 34:44Speaker 10: months in Europe.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Oh right, yeah, and.
- 34:47Speaker 4: We need enjoy this time. If you is, if you
- 34:51Speaker 4: we ship the car now we don't enjoy the.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Orders are closed.
- 34:57Speaker 5: This when everything is good.
- 34:59Speaker 9: We don't have plans for back to Brazil, and we
- 35:03Speaker 9: need to stay here. We love here is nice, is
- 35:08Speaker 9: a good place for us. It's cheap to say good
- 35:11Speaker 9: beautiful and wait and for enjoy Europe and Africa, because
- 35:16Speaker 9: one time we ship the car.
- 35:18Speaker 2: We know we don't come back. Yeah, so we're gonna
- 35:21Speaker 2: we're gonna do.
- 35:22Speaker 11: Europe, seven years in Africa, Asia, ending in Russia and
- 35:27Speaker 11: then come back.
- 35:28Speaker 8: But this is take and you have other players for
- 35:31Speaker 8: all the same.
- 35:33Speaker 1: This awesome. Thank you guys so much. So where can
- 35:37Speaker 1: people find you on line?
- 35:40Speaker 2: We have a website but it's not up to date,
