- 0:12What's going on, everybody?
- 0:16Welcome to Coffee Talk with Emily Rolfe.
- 0:40Oh, is it actually?
- 0:41Or is it just that I have coffee?
- 0:44Well, you said let's do coffee.
- 0:45Yeah.
- 0:45Coffee talk.
- 0:48I'm kind of past my coffee
- 0:50because I'm on the East Coast,
- 0:52but I'm actually drinking
- 0:56like a salty element type.
- 0:58Oh, nice.
- 1:00I have a big workout waiting
- 1:01for me this evening,
- 1:02so I'm trying to prepare.
- 1:03Okay.
- 1:04Smart.
- 1:05Yeah.
- 1:05Yeah.
- 1:06It's one of those where it's intervals,
- 1:0815 front squats, 10 pushups,
- 1:11and then in the three-minute window,
- 1:14max calorie assault bike.
- 1:16Gotcha.
- 1:17Until I accumulate 100 calories.
- 1:19Right.
- 1:20I love workouts like that.
- 1:21Yeah.
- 1:23But I always go to ham on
- 1:25the first few assault bikes.
- 1:28And then you're just
- 1:30breaking even or just doing the buy-in.
- 1:31Yeah.
- 1:32Yeah.
- 1:34And it makes it horrible to finish.
- 1:37Is it Cal Sue, the 100 thrusters,
- 1:39and you have to do five
- 1:40burpees every minute on the
- 1:41minute until you accumulate 100?
- 1:43And I've seen people just
- 1:46sit minutes out or just do
- 1:48the five burpees and not be
- 1:50able to do any thrusters
- 1:51for three minutes in a row
- 1:52just to come back down from the red line.
- 1:55Yeah, yeah.
- 1:58I'm going to be 55 next year,
- 2:01and I've got to learn how to pace myself.
- 2:04You can't?
- 2:06Did you say that?
- 2:07I need to learn.
- 2:09I'm not good at pacing at all.
- 2:11Yeah, it's tough.
- 2:12Yeah.
- 2:14Well, enough about me.
- 2:15We're here to talk about you.
- 2:18You were going back,
- 2:19or you've qualified for
- 2:20your sixth CrossFit Games.
- 2:24Yeah, crazy.
- 2:25In your wildest imagination,
- 2:27could you have ever
- 2:27imagined you'd be here?
- 2:29Cool.
- 2:30No,
- 2:30I was saying that to Kali the other day.
- 2:31I was like, see, you almost went there.
- 2:34Lost my balance.
- 2:35I was saying in my first games, 2019,
- 2:39or just before that,
- 2:40it was like just a dream to
- 2:42make the games one day.
- 2:43Like, wouldn't that be amazing?
- 2:45And then, yeah, six years in a row later,
- 2:49here we are.
- 2:50It's crazy.
- 2:52Yeah.
- 2:52And what's completely
- 2:54baffling to me is every
- 2:56year you get better.
- 2:58Yeah, so far.
- 3:00The only exception is the
- 3:01medical withdrawal.
- 3:04But that's understandable.
- 3:06Yeah.
- 3:07If it was me, I would have competed.
- 3:10We know that.
- 3:11Yeah.
- 3:14So as an athlete,
- 3:17you started later in life
- 3:19than most athletes, right?
- 3:21Do you think that that
- 3:22helped you because you
- 3:23didn't have the miles on
- 3:24the tread going into this?
- 3:29Yeah, maybe I think, um,
- 3:32definitely doing the other
- 3:33sports that I did helped
- 3:34like gymnastics was a huge help,
- 3:36obviously.
- 3:37Um, yeah, I,
- 3:41cause I was probably 20
- 3:43something when I started, right.
- 3:44Not 17, 16, 15,
- 3:47like some of the girls now.
- 3:49So, I mean,
- 3:50there's no way of knowing cause
- 3:53I'll never say in the Dave interviews,
- 3:55they started at nine.
- 3:57Yeah, that's insane.
- 3:59I think,
- 3:59I think CrossFit's a sport that
- 4:02accumulates so many other
- 4:04sports so that if you do
- 4:05other sports early,
- 4:06you're still kind of training for that,
- 4:09that you can catch on later.
- 4:10So I think it's cool that
- 4:12whereas like gymnastics,
- 4:13you have to start when
- 4:14you're five or younger.
- 4:16Like you don't pick that up when you're 12,
- 4:19you know,
- 4:20if you're going to be compete at
- 4:21a high level anyways.
- 4:24Yeah.
- 4:25So, so with that,
- 4:27how has training changed
- 4:28for you from 2018, 19 to today?
- 4:35Um,
- 4:37I think the intensity has definitely
- 4:38changed.
- 4:40Um, what I'm able to handle now,
- 4:42intensity and volume is
- 4:44actually higher than when I was younger.
- 4:46Go figure.
- 4:48Um,
- 4:49And I think just like Kyle's
- 4:51been coaching me now for that many years.
- 4:54I think just knowing me
- 4:55inside and out as an
- 4:56athlete and knowing exactly
- 4:57what I'm good at and what I
- 4:59suck at and what I need to
- 5:00work on and tailoring to
- 5:02the T everything in my programming.
- 5:06Whereas before I was doing
- 5:07more general and I was
- 5:08getting better because when
- 5:09you start CrossFit,
- 5:10really you just do it and
- 5:12you do general things and you get better,
- 5:13right?
- 5:14And then as you get more and more specific,
- 5:16you have to hone in on
- 5:17those specific things.
- 5:20You and Kyle kind of learned
- 5:21this sport together, right?
- 5:24And so he's become a better coach.
- 5:28You've become a better athlete.
- 5:30How cool has that been that
- 5:32not only are you doing it
- 5:33for six years in a row,
- 5:34you're doing it with your dudes?
- 5:36Yeah, it's so cool.
- 5:37We say that all the time.
- 5:39We're like, how cool is this?
- 5:40We're literally traveling
- 5:41the world and competing and
- 5:44doing it together.
- 5:45Like, I don't know if he wasn't my coach.
- 5:48I don't know if I would
- 5:50enjoy the process so much
- 5:52and enjoy the competition
- 5:53and the traveling and, you know,
- 5:57the fact that we're
- 5:58together doing it is it's so fun.
- 6:00And you both have other jobs too.
- 6:03Like this isn't your sole thing.
- 6:05So you get to spend this
- 6:06time together because other
- 6:08times of the day you're apart.
- 6:10Right.
- 6:11Yeah.
- 6:12Yeah.
- 6:13So how has that gone?
- 6:14Like the balance of work and training?
- 6:16Are you getting better at
- 6:17that or is it just old hat now?
- 6:20I think I'm getting better.
- 6:21The job that I have now is
- 6:25better for CrossFit.
- 6:27I'm only working four days a week.
- 6:30And no nights.
- 6:32I don't do nights at all anymore.
- 6:33So that's huge.
- 6:34Yeah, it's just, it's better.
- 6:38I've learned how to make it work.
- 6:43Wadzombie says, from the outside,
- 6:44it looks like Kyle has the
- 6:45same amount of passion for this as Emily.
- 6:48Very cool to see that.
- 6:49He does.
- 6:51We have a rule on Sundays,
- 6:55no CrossFit talk, like at dinner,
- 6:57at the dinner table,
- 6:58because we're trying to like separate.
- 7:00And, you know,
- 7:01now like coming into the games,
- 7:02that rule is out the window.
- 7:04But yeah, we're always just like,
- 7:07he's always thinking of new ways.
- 7:08He's always researching.
- 7:09He's always, yeah, he's, he's in it.
- 7:12He won't admit it, but he's in it.
- 7:13Yeah.
- 7:15Yeah.
- 7:17Would he ever coach anybody
- 7:18else or is it just because it's you?
- 7:21I don't know.
- 7:22That's something you'd have
- 7:22to ask him to be honest.
- 7:24Okay.
- 7:25Yeah.
- 7:28Yeah.
- 7:28Cause I'm sure that like, if he wanted to,
- 7:32there'd be people that would take him up.
- 7:35Yeah.
- 7:35He did coach.
- 7:37I don't know if you remember
- 7:38Adam Davidson.
- 7:38Yeah.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:40He coached him that year.
- 7:43like during the COVID year.
- 7:45So he had both of us and
- 7:46that worked out really well, actually.
- 7:47I think a guy girl scenario
- 7:49works really well.
- 7:50I don't know if he coached
- 7:51another girl if that would work as well.
- 7:54That was competing against me,
- 7:55but definitely the guy girl works.
- 7:58Yeah, yeah,
- 7:59that that seems to be what every
- 8:03good coach has.
- 8:04I just watched the Ricky
- 8:06Alex video yesterday.
- 8:08It works for them because
- 8:10it's a high-ranked guy, high-ranked girl.
- 8:13They're not competing against each other.
- 8:15They're so far apart anyways.
- 8:16The only time they're ever
- 8:17together is before the games, really.
- 8:19He's on weight in Australia, right?
- 8:23Not too bad at
- 8:25Yeah.
- 8:26Yeah.
- 8:27It's funny because like I,
- 8:28I go to Christie O'Connell's gym.
- 8:30Right.
- 8:31Like Pat has no desire to
- 8:32coach anybody but her.
- 8:34Yeah.
- 8:35Right.
- 8:36I mean,
- 8:36you put in so much time and effort
- 8:38and energy.
- 8:39Like you have to do it
- 8:40because you love it as a coach.
- 8:42Like really,
- 8:43you're not getting much out of it.
- 8:45I mean, maybe Shane is cashing in,
- 8:49but you know, you're,
- 8:51you're really doing it
- 8:51because you love it.
- 8:52Like,
- 8:54Yeah.
- 8:56So he's retired with her.
- 8:57They both retired together.
- 8:59They're off doing other
- 9:00things and enjoying life now.
- 9:04Yeah, good.
- 9:05Yeah.
- 9:06So you went to West Coast.
- 9:09You took fifth.
- 9:12Never really in doubt you
- 9:14were going to make the games,
- 9:16which is good for you.
- 9:18I've been around where
- 9:20you've been on that line
- 9:23going into Sunday.
- 9:24Yeah.
- 9:26And this time you were not.
- 9:27Yeah, it was nice.
- 9:29It was a calm... You're right.
- 9:32Never in the weekend was I like,
- 9:34I was just confident.
- 9:35It was fine.
- 9:36Everything was fine all weekend.
- 9:39No big highs, no big lows.
- 9:42It was just fine.
- 9:44What did you learn that
- 9:46weekend that you and Kyle
- 9:47have brought back?
- 9:52Am I... Okay, there we go.
- 9:59I think specifics in workouts.
- 10:03Um,
- 10:04I've written like after every
- 10:06competition I write down, you know,
- 10:08I go through the whole
- 10:09workout and write down what
- 10:10worked and what didn't.
- 10:10So there's always those specific things.
- 10:14Um, but on a whole, I don't say,
- 10:18like I say,
- 10:18I think it was just like
- 10:20confidence and it's,
- 10:21it was nice just being comfortable.
- 10:25No surprises.
- 10:25No,
- 10:29no it was good it was a
- 10:31smooth I mean there were of
- 10:34course things that didn't
- 10:35go as I practiced and the
- 10:38couple workouts I did quite
- 10:39a bit worse than what I did
- 10:41in training which was
- 10:42disappointing so we kind of
- 10:43had to pick that apart and
- 10:44figure out you know what
- 10:47happened there but that's
- 10:48competition is is that common
- 10:54no usually I'm the opposite
- 10:56usually I'll shave minutes
- 10:58off or I'll you know so uh
- 11:01yeah the fact that I did it
- 11:03was the snatch ladder I was
- 11:05significantly faster in
- 11:06training and then the
- 11:08second event with the front
- 11:09squat double under um and
- 11:13yeah we went back and we
- 11:14figured out you know I
- 11:15switched the length of my
- 11:16rope right before I
- 11:17competed and I you know I
- 11:19did a few rookie things
- 11:20that were just stupid and
- 11:24You know, you learn from them.
- 11:25You still make mistakes at
- 11:26this six years in.
- 11:31But so, yeah, you made those mistakes,
- 11:34but it's cool that you
- 11:35could make those mistakes
- 11:36and still never be in doubt
- 11:38that you're going to the games.
- 11:41Yeah, it wasn't detrimental,
- 11:44which is nice.
- 11:45Yeah.
- 11:45And it was like that.
- 11:48That event is such a high
- 11:50risk event that I, you know,
- 11:52I hate to say this and I hate to do it,
- 11:54but I played it safe just
- 11:56because the risk is so high.
- 11:58And I knew where I was at.
- 11:59And yeah.
- 12:00you know, I knew, okay,
- 12:01I'm going to take an extra 10 seconds,
- 12:04pick up the dumbbells and
- 12:05just go and do it all unbroken.
- 12:07Like I'm not going to have to push it and,
- 12:09you know, risk failure and, you know,
- 12:12so that was,
- 12:13I guess that was kind of nice,
- 12:14but you know,
- 12:15you never like to compete safe,
- 12:17but sometimes it's just the
- 12:19smarter thing to do.
- 12:21Yeah.
- 12:21To play it safe and still
- 12:22take seventh in that event
- 12:23is pretty good.
- 12:26Did I get seventh?
- 12:27You did.
- 12:29Yeah.
- 12:30But it shows that what you're capable of,
- 12:34like, if you pushed it,
- 12:36you might have taken top three.
- 12:40Yep.
- 12:41And I think going in, it was like,
- 12:44I didn't need to do that, though.
- 12:46Because, again, the risk versus reward,
- 12:48like, on that event,
- 12:49you saw people blow up, like...
- 12:51you know,
- 12:52do I try to get third in event and maybe,
- 12:57you know, do better overall or do I,
- 12:59and then maybe risk blowing
- 13:01up and get 20th.
- 13:02Like, yeah, I was,
- 13:06I didn't get to come watch
- 13:07you guys in the West,
- 13:07but I was in the East and
- 13:10the leaderboard changed
- 13:11dramatically on that last event.
- 13:14Yeah.
- 13:14Crazy.
- 13:16And they love that.
- 13:17They love doing an event.
- 13:18Same thing happened the year before,
- 13:19like with the sandbag carry.
- 13:22Like remember the Kelly Baker thing?
- 13:23Like she, yeah,
- 13:26it's just like creates the drama.
- 13:30It does.
- 13:32And I know people have been asking Boz,
- 13:33did he test it so that he
- 13:34knew that that was pretty
- 13:36much the breaking point?
- 13:39And he said, no,
- 13:39that just by chance that came there.
- 13:43You mean in the lunges?
- 13:44Yeah.
- 13:47Okay.
- 13:47Interesting.
- 13:49So, yeah.
- 13:51So, yeah,
- 13:52so the only question I have from
- 13:54the semis is I know how you
- 13:57are great at running.
- 13:58Were you disappointed the
- 13:59run was shortened?
- 14:02Yeah.
- 14:04I mean,
- 14:04I knew I was going to do fine anyways.
- 14:09So it didn't matter in the overall,
- 14:10but I wanted to just,
- 14:12I wanted people to get wrecked.
- 14:16And I was like, yeah, make the run longer.
- 14:18But I knew, like, I think they were right.
- 14:20We all would have got like
- 14:22capped somewhere on the run
- 14:23and it would have been so hard to,
- 14:25and then people would have
- 14:26known they're going to get capped and,
- 14:27you know, ran the race differently maybe.
- 14:29So I think it was probably
- 14:30smart because it was quite
- 14:32a bit longer with the full berm.
- 14:34of course I wanted to do
- 14:35that part what I find
- 14:38fascinating about because
- 14:39you are you win running
- 14:41events at the games then
- 14:43you go into semifinals and
- 14:44you have like this person
- 14:46that comes out of nowhere
- 14:47that's just a great runner
- 14:48and he won right does that
- 14:52play with your head at all
- 14:53or do you just ignore that
- 14:55and say you got to run your own race
- 14:58yeah, you know, I knew, I knew her, like,
- 15:01what she got, so I was like, okay,
- 15:02that's the time to beat, like,
- 15:04that's just competing,
- 15:05you should know that, and yeah,
- 15:08when I got second, I was like,
- 15:11that's annoying, but I knew, like,
- 15:15at the end of the weekend,
- 15:15it wouldn't make a difference, so.
- 15:18yeah it's that's what's
- 15:19great about semifinals is
- 15:20you have these specialists
- 15:21that nobody really knows of
- 15:24who are good at that one
- 15:25thing and can really like
- 15:27shake up a leaderboard here
- 15:28and there yeah and you know
- 15:31a couple other girls like
- 15:32that helped me because
- 15:33there was people I had to
- 15:34beat and then the randoms
- 15:36got like in between us so I
- 15:37was like okay sweet thanks
- 15:39just so you don't even know
- 15:41that you know are just good
- 15:43at that one thing you're right
- 15:45On Sunday in the east,
- 15:46someone from the first heat
- 15:47took top five in every event.
- 15:51Wow.
- 15:53It was crazy.
- 15:56Well, um, Olivia did,
- 15:59didn't she win the first
- 16:00two on Sunday in our thing?
- 16:02Yeah.
- 16:04Yeah.
- 16:06And still didn't make it.
- 16:08Yeah.
- 16:09Which is insane.
- 16:10Yeah.
- 16:12It was crazy.
- 16:14In the East, Tia won everything.
- 16:16First place was out of the box.
- 16:21So many things changed from 7 to 15.
- 16:25I think Chloe was 15th going
- 16:28into the last event and ended up 9th.
- 16:32Chloe.
- 16:33Chloe Govind David.
- 16:34Oh, right.
- 16:37Yeah.
- 16:38You have a couple of events at the end and
- 16:41I think it's done,
- 16:44but it's never over until it's over,
- 16:47right?
- 16:48Yeah, that's great.
- 16:52So we talked last night
- 16:54about death sessions.
- 16:56Why do you call them death sessions?
- 16:59Does the intensity ramp up
- 17:01right before the games or
- 17:02have you been doing this for months?
- 17:04So I've been doing what I was telling you,
- 17:06like these Mondays and Tuesday mornings.
- 17:09We call them,
- 17:10Kyle calls them DOT training.
- 17:12D-O-T, die or thrive.
- 17:15So die, death, it's kind of the same.
- 17:18And they're really tough.
- 17:19Like they're,
- 17:21sometimes I go to bed with a
- 17:22little bit of anxiety.
- 17:23No time to get up.
- 17:26And Monday and Tuesday are like my work,
- 17:28my evening work days.
- 17:30So my first session,
- 17:32it has to be right away or
- 17:33else I don't have enough time in the day.
- 17:35So I like get up and I go
- 17:37like right away downstairs in the garage.
- 17:39So it's tough.
- 17:40It's like first thing I roll out of bed.
- 17:43And they're mostly like high power,
- 17:46high output, high intensity, minimal rest,
- 17:50but kind of interval style things.
- 17:53Like he'll make me do like
- 17:56something on the rower, let's say.
- 18:00And then get off the rower
- 18:01and do thrusters or get off
- 18:02the rower and do something else.
- 18:04and then repeat repeat
- 18:06repeat and he'll make a
- 18:09pace that I have to hit
- 18:10that's very it's doable but
- 18:13it's extremely
- 18:13uncomfortable like I would
- 18:14never row the machine at
- 18:16that pace if I had to get
- 18:17off and do something but
- 18:19like that's kind of the
- 18:20idea and um yeah to kind of
- 18:23kill yourself on the
- 18:24machine and then you get
- 18:25off and do something and
- 18:26it's it's terrible they're
- 18:27terrible they're hard um
- 18:30But yeah, every Monday, Tuesday,
- 18:31we've been doing that all year,
- 18:32and it's helped immensely
- 18:35in so many things.
- 18:39Does it simulate something
- 18:40that you think you're going
- 18:41to see at the games?
- 18:43Yeah,
- 18:44we were talking about this the other day.
- 18:45We were like,
- 18:45it would be awesome if we did
- 18:47an interval-style workout like that,
- 18:49because that's the way I've been training,
- 18:50but...
- 18:52Even if we don't, just the way,
- 18:56like what I've gained from
- 18:58doing that kind of working
- 19:00out is going to help me in
- 19:02so many other workouts anyways.
- 19:04So really it's a win-win.
- 19:06It just sucks.
- 19:08Speaking of interval training,
- 19:10your question to Dave at
- 19:11the end of your interview I
- 19:12thought was brilliant.
- 19:13And you asked him if he
- 19:17could redo something, right?
- 19:21And he talked about the
- 19:22interval workout that he
- 19:23thinks he screwed up on.
- 19:25What I found really cool is
- 19:30great people always look at
- 19:31their negatives.
- 19:33People who do great things
- 19:34always look at their
- 19:35negatives because he didn't
- 19:36just list one.
- 19:37Then he listed off a bunch
- 19:38more that he messed up on.
- 19:40You can tell that he wants
- 19:42to think about that all the time.
- 19:45What was that you cut out a little bit?
- 19:49I asked him and he knew it right.
- 19:50He spouted them off.
- 19:51It's like he's his biggest critic.
- 19:54Right.
- 19:55And they're right there in
- 19:56the forefront and you know,
- 19:57he's thinking about them
- 19:58all the time and how he's
- 19:59not going to make that mistake again.
- 20:01Yeah.
- 20:02And it's hard when you have
- 20:03someone like Tia who just
- 20:04like kind of overachieves, right?
- 20:06You're like, okay,
- 20:07the field is going to take
- 20:09three intervals for this, except her.
- 20:12And it's like, well,
- 20:13do you program for one
- 20:13person or do you program
- 20:14for the other 39?
- 20:15I don't know.
- 20:17Hopefully we've all like
- 20:18caught up a little,
- 20:19but still there's going to
- 20:21be those events that, you know,
- 20:24it's, it's funny.
- 20:24Pat was on Savan this
- 20:26morning and he was saying
- 20:27that he loved it when Tia
- 20:30almost broke the test and he loved it.
- 20:32And BKG almost did the same
- 20:34on the men's men's side.
- 20:36And he was like, as an athlete,
- 20:38we want to break your tests.
- 20:39Yeah.
- 20:40Like that's, that's cool to us.
- 20:43And to him, it's a,
- 20:43it's a broken thing he needs to fix.
- 20:47Yeah.
- 20:48That's because it's like,
- 20:50that's the ultimate goal.
- 20:52If you go into a workout and you're like,
- 20:53okay, no one's going to finish,
- 20:55it's kind of like, okay,
- 20:57get as far as we can.
- 20:58We know no one.
- 20:59But if there's a chance that
- 21:02you can or you can break it, as you say,
- 21:05it's like, yeah.
- 21:08Yeah.
- 21:09And Dave has been saying in
- 21:10these interviews,
- 21:11the reason he's doing them
- 21:12is because he felt like
- 21:13there was an us versus them
- 21:16with the athletes in CrossFit HQ.
- 21:18Yeah.
- 21:19Have you felt that in the past?
- 21:26You know what?
- 21:26I kind of not really, I want to say like,
- 21:30I'm not really in the know.
- 21:32Like I kind of just show up,
- 21:34do what's programmed, like whatever.
- 21:35Like I don't know all the
- 21:37behind the scene drama and like,
- 21:39I'm kind of just like, eh.
- 21:42Ignorance is bliss, right?
- 21:45Yeah.
- 21:45Head in the sand.
- 21:46Yeah.
- 21:49Yeah.
- 21:50I really enjoy, I'm glad he did them.
- 21:51I think it did give him some
- 21:55touch of what athletes go through.
- 21:57I think it was cool.
- 21:59I think he learned a lot about us.
- 22:01Like some of the questions I was like,
- 22:02do you know anything about any athlete?
- 22:06But it's cool.
- 22:07He's a cool guy.
- 22:08Like he was fun to talk to.
- 22:11I've been saying for years,
- 22:12I started this whole
- 22:14CrossFit life as a volunteer.
- 22:16And he was so good to the volunteers.
- 22:19He would come around,
- 22:20shake everybody's hand,
- 22:20thank them for coming,
- 22:22doing all this stuff.
- 22:23And nobody ever got to see that in public.
- 22:26Right.
- 22:27And now with these interviews,
- 22:29I think they're starting to
- 22:30see that in public.
- 22:33Yeah.
- 22:33He's not the old, like, oh,
- 22:34we all hate you.
- 22:37workouts are so bad and you
- 22:38know I think it it's kind
- 22:40of a facade like you know
- 22:42everyone loves to hate the
- 22:44open workout because it was
- 22:45so bad and like but the guy
- 22:47himself is not well and I
- 22:51think at the end of the day
- 22:52he wants to highlight you
- 22:53guys to him that's like the
- 22:56ultimate success yeah
- 23:02He says over and over,
- 23:03I hate programmers that
- 23:04over-program and don't
- 23:06let... Simple's better
- 23:08because the athletes can
- 23:09then show what they can do.
- 23:15Yeah, I think he's big on that.
- 23:18Oh, sorry.
- 23:19No, no.
- 23:19I was just going to say, I think he's,
- 23:21he's big on more just, you're right.
- 23:23Like simple,
- 23:23like general fitness and the
- 23:27best will come through.
- 23:28It's like,
- 23:28you don't need all these bells
- 23:29and whistles and like weird
- 23:31things and like, you know, but we'll see.
- 23:35We'll see what's at the games.
- 23:37I get a sense the athletes
- 23:39are excited that that's,
- 23:40we're going back to that.
- 23:44yeah I am I know like I
- 23:47think high school is cool
- 23:48like I think it's it has a
- 23:49time and a place but it
- 23:52shouldn't I think you know
- 23:55we're all doing it because
- 23:56it's fitness not because so
- 23:59and so can do a press to
- 24:01handstand or whatever right
- 24:04Right.
- 24:05So speaking of the games,
- 24:07a couple of things have been announced.
- 24:09Chad, Dave's talked about that enough.
- 24:12Then we have the run swim,
- 24:14which is right up your alley.
- 24:16How are you on this on the lake swim?
- 24:21I'm pretty good.
- 24:23I, I'm a good swimmer.
- 24:24I'm not, I'm not an ex collegiate swimmer,
- 24:30but I'm a good swimmer.
- 24:31So
- 24:33Yeah, I'm excited.
- 24:34We don't have a ton of lakes around here,
- 24:36so I'm only getting out
- 24:39once or twice before the games,
- 24:40like actual open water.
- 24:41But of course,
- 24:42I've been swimming all year.
- 24:43And yeah, I'm excited.
- 24:48I love swimming in lakes,
- 24:49so it'll be good.
- 24:51With it being a man-made lake,
- 24:52I think the only big
- 24:53difference is sight lines, right?
- 24:58I did a lesson with an open
- 24:59water triathlon coach,
- 25:02I think two years ago now.
- 25:05And yeah, that helped.
- 25:08Because it is a big thing
- 25:09and you have to practice it.
- 25:10You can't just learn it and be like, okay,
- 25:11I have it now.
- 25:12It's something you have to practice.
- 25:14Yeah, it's different.
- 25:17And I think maybe that's the
- 25:18advantage of not being an
- 25:20ex-professional swimmer is because...
- 25:24they're so used to looking
- 25:25at that black line and
- 25:27having all the sights in the pool.
- 25:29Well, you were a swimmer, right?
- 25:31But then when you're in a
- 25:32lake and you see the dark
- 25:33and murky waters and you have to spot,
- 25:36it's completely different.
- 25:38Yeah.
- 25:39It's all about sight lines to me.
- 25:40If you can swim straight,
- 25:41you're going to do well.
- 25:43Yeah.
- 25:45Yeah.
- 25:46I think it's going to be a
- 25:47really cool event.
- 25:49I can't wait to see you run against Tia.
- 25:50Yeah.
- 25:53I'm excited that the men and
- 25:55the women are together.
- 25:57I like that.
- 25:58Yeah.
- 25:59Yeah.
- 26:01I think it's, it's just,
- 26:04I think there are a lot of
- 26:05people with good running
- 26:06ability and the great
- 26:08runners are going to show
- 26:09what they can do.
- 26:11And then can you just hang
- 26:12on for the swim?
- 26:14Yeah.
- 26:15And I think, you know,
- 26:16if you have one and not the other,
- 26:18you'll still do okay.
- 26:20But yeah,
- 26:21it's hard to do really well,
- 26:23I think because, you know,
- 26:25so you blast the run,
- 26:26but then you drown like you,
- 26:29you know what I mean?
- 26:29You're like slow in the water or, you know,
- 26:31if you're not confident swimming,
- 26:33maybe you can't blast the
- 26:34run because your heart rate
- 26:35can't be up here to go in the water.
- 26:38Right.
- 26:38So I think, you know,
- 26:40and if you're a great swimmer,
- 26:41but you're so far behind from the run,
- 26:44like that's hard too.
- 26:45So, you know, I think I'm okay at both.
- 26:50Yeah.
- 26:51And then we have Farrington field,
- 26:52which is going to be a
- 26:54field sprint and a 1600
- 26:56meter with a happy star
- 26:59somewhere in one of those.
- 27:01Yeah.
- 27:04I don't know.
- 27:04I find it hard to believe a
- 27:06field sprint is just down
- 27:08the field and that's it,
- 27:10but I don't know.
- 27:10Maybe.
- 27:12So I've said on,
- 27:13on our like update show
- 27:15that I hope it's a strong
- 27:16man's fear type event.
- 27:19Right.
- 27:20Like just pick up an object,
- 27:23run down the field, you know,
- 27:25different kind.
- 27:26Like if you remember 2017,
- 27:29they did that with a yoke,
- 27:30a sled and the Slater logs
- 27:34from strong man.
- 27:36Right.
- 27:37Yeah.
- 27:39Is that, is that, you're trying to sure.
- 27:50I think, yeah, it's got, yeah,
- 27:52that would be, that'd be super cool.
- 27:54I'd like to do something like that.
- 27:55And then depending how long that rest is,
- 27:59you know,
- 27:59maybe you have to run a mile on
- 28:00like lactic legs that,
- 28:04so everyone's going to
- 28:05practice a mile and be like, Oh yeah,
- 28:07that's my mile time.
- 28:08But then who knows what, I don't know.
- 28:12And we don't,
- 28:12maybe the happy stars in the mile.
- 28:15Yeah,
- 28:15maybe you got to run with the star on
- 28:17Bear Hug Mile.
- 28:19Yeah, I've heard people say run 400,
- 28:22then run 400 with the happy star,
- 28:24then variations throughout the mile.
- 28:29Could be.
- 28:32Yeah.
- 28:34Because it's open to the
- 28:35public and it's on ESPN,
- 28:37I want it to be something cool.
- 28:41Not just in track meet.
- 28:43You know, I hear both ends.
- 28:46People are also saying like, oh,
- 28:48just do like a straight up
- 28:49mile so we can actually
- 28:50compare CrossFit athletes
- 28:52to other people that run a mile.
- 28:53Well, in track,
- 28:54I don't think anyone runs a mile, right?
- 28:56It's 1500.
- 28:57But regardless, I mean...
- 29:02were pathetically slow in
- 29:04comparison like let's be
- 29:05honest like we're gonna
- 29:08watch people in paris run
- 29:09the 1500 faster than we run
- 29:11the 800 pretty much so I
- 29:14don't know if we'll see
- 29:17yeah so do you like knowing
- 29:21the events beforehand or do
- 29:23you like being surprised
- 29:24when you get there I don't
- 29:26want to know anything I
- 29:27would rather just go and
- 29:30do what I mean in these next
- 29:32two weeks you're probably
- 29:35not going to get if you're
- 29:36not a good runner you're
- 29:37not getting better in two
- 29:38weeks like you know you're
- 29:42if you can't if you're not
- 29:43a good lifter you know
- 29:44you're not putting on 30
- 29:46pounds in the next two
- 29:46weeks like it's just
- 29:49Why no stress about it?
- 29:52And like people are going to
- 29:54over practice and like,
- 29:56how many step ups are you
- 29:57going to do in the next two
- 29:58weeks for chat?
- 29:58Like develop, I don't know,
- 30:01knee tendonitis or
- 30:01something like it's just, we don't,
- 30:04I get it why they do it to
- 30:05create more hype and like it's coming up,
- 30:08but like as an athlete, nah,
- 30:10I don't want to know.
- 30:12Well,
- 30:12and they leave out enough details
- 30:13that you don't really know
- 30:15what any of these events are.
- 30:16That's the thing.
- 30:17You'll practice it one way
- 30:18and it'll be completely different.
- 30:20Like I said,
- 30:20that mile could be on messed
- 30:22up legs or it could be,
- 30:25you're right with a sandbag without like,
- 30:28whatever you train for,
- 30:29it's not how you're going
- 30:30to feel on day two of
- 30:32competition anyways.
- 30:34And we know Chad has a twist.
- 30:36Yeah.
- 30:37You know,
- 30:38the only thing I think we know is
- 30:39the run swim.
- 30:40True.
- 30:41Yeah.
- 30:42But then again,
- 30:42that's like a monostructural thing.
- 30:44Like you're not getting that much better.
- 30:47If you're not a good swimmer,
- 30:49you're not good.
- 30:50Like you're not going to be
- 30:51good in two weeks.
- 30:53It takes years.
- 30:55Yeah.
- 30:56Wadzomi says, I'd rather not know.
- 30:58Can't imagine the mental
- 30:59stress trying to prep if you know.
- 31:03Yeah.
- 31:03Yeah.
- 31:04And people,
- 31:05people will say like the people
- 31:07who are in week three of second finals,
- 31:09they'll be like, it's the worst.
- 31:11Like watching is worse too.
- 31:13We don't have to watch
- 31:13people do it at the games,
- 31:14but like just waiting and
- 31:16knowing and like how many
- 31:18variations and intervals
- 31:19and like different things
- 31:20that can you do in your training?
- 31:22Like I would argue that's
- 31:23not the best two weeks
- 31:25leading up to a comp, right?
- 31:28Right.
- 31:29Right.
- 31:29And you want to go in with
- 31:30your body feeling good, not trash.
- 31:34Yeah.
- 31:36So yeah, I get that totally.
- 31:39So what are your
- 31:40expectations this year or
- 31:44are you waiting to see what
- 31:45else is out there?
- 31:49Um, I'm not waiting.
- 31:52I have expectations, but I'll keep those,
- 31:55uh, between me and Kyle right now.
- 31:56Okay.
- 31:59But yeah, I want to come in healthy and,
- 32:02um,
- 32:03Yeah,
- 32:04I want to execute the way that I can.
- 32:09If I go into every event and
- 32:12come out and be like,
- 32:13that was the best I could do,
- 32:15whether it's a first or a 20th,
- 32:19that I got to be happy with.
- 32:22What's crazy is we did our top 40...
- 32:25rankings Sunday night, Carolyn Prevost,
- 32:28Jamie and myself, I think from two to 14,
- 32:35you could put in a hopper
- 32:37and it could come out any which way.
- 32:40Yeah.
- 32:41The field has gotten so much
- 32:43better as a whole.
- 32:46And then we don't know how
- 32:47people have improved over the year.
- 32:50Yeah.
- 32:52So it's crazy.
- 32:55Yeah, it could be.
- 32:56And especially with the games,
- 32:59so much variety and
- 33:01different events that you
- 33:02don't see throughout the year.
- 33:05So that's, that's the fun part.
- 33:09So what zombie has one final
- 33:10question for you and it's
- 33:11not games related.
- 33:13What is she doing outside work training,
- 33:15reading, binging, any shows?
- 33:18So what do you do?
- 33:20Compress.
- 33:22Um,
- 33:25not much I was telling
- 33:25someone else the other day
- 33:27like I feel like there's no
- 33:29energy to do anything in
- 33:30this last like month before
- 33:31the games you're just like
- 33:33all the energies into
- 33:34training and then eating
- 33:36and sleeping like it's so
- 33:38bad I was gonna sit down
- 33:40and play piano the other
- 33:41day because I play piano
- 33:42and I just couldn't didn't
- 33:44even have the energy like
- 33:45to sit there and play piano
- 33:47I was like I need to just
- 33:48veg and watch TV um
- 33:52So yeah, no shows.
- 33:53I watched the Simone Biles documentary,
- 33:55of course.
- 33:56But other than that,
- 34:00it's a very life in these
- 34:03couple months here.
- 34:04I'm looking forward to
- 34:06letting loose in August and
- 34:09doing some stuff.
- 34:12I've never heard the piano
- 34:13thing in all the times
- 34:14we've known each other.
- 34:15Yeah,
- 34:16I did Royal Conservatory all the way up.
- 34:21until uh end of grade 12 so
- 34:24wow elise says she would
- 34:28love to hear you play oh
- 34:31maybe one day after the
