- 0:08Welcome to Running: A FEVER.
- 0:11My name is Michael Davis.
- 0:12This is a show about fitness, diet, and
- 0:14medicine.
- 0:15My goal, today, is to live a long,
- 0:18healthy, happy, active life right up to the
- 0:22very end.
- 0:24It's all about livin' long and lovin' life.
- 0:26Well, today I am back at the Lake
- 0:28Fayetteville Trail,
- 0:31starting at the parking lot near the Botanical
- 0:35Gardens, and I'm taking a walk
- 0:44in one of the classics of Running A
- 0:49Fever venues today. Lake Fayetteville, it's a beautiful
- 0:53day,
- 0:55and Lake Fayetteville, a bit warm.
- 0:58It is the middle of summer in the
- 1:01middle of the United States.
- 1:04Today, that means it's about 93 degrees, and
- 1:08I'm breathing a little bit harder today.
- 1:11I'm
- 1:12263 pounds, and it's been a few weeks
- 1:19since I've been out exercising anything other than
- 1:24yard work. So, I'm glad I'm out here
- 1:30today, but it's going to be, I don't
- 1:34know,
- 1:35we'll play it by ear, but I am
- 1:38not promising anything more than a mile today.
- 1:44We will see how it goes.
- 1:48I made a little life decision, somewhat health
- 1:51-related, since my last
- 1:56episode that I recorded. I had probably mentioned
- 2:03briefly that I was
- 2:05considering going back and exercising the privileges of
- 2:11my pilot license.
- 2:13I have a pilot license, which I got
- 2:17back in the early 90s.
- 2:20I am a private pilot,
- 2:23and I really enjoyed it back then.
- 2:25I really wanted to get back into it.
- 2:29So, I investigated what it would take to
- 2:33do that. You have to have a,
- 2:35the license itself doesn't ever expire, but you
- 2:38have to have a current medical certificate
- 2:42and also be checked out by the FAA
- 2:46or a designated examiner every two years to
- 2:50make sure you're
- 2:50proficient. So, I looked into that, and the
- 2:59crux of the matter is, the FAA doesn't
- 3:16just
- 3:1660 years old. It's been 30 years since,
- 3:19been actually 32 years since I got my
- 3:22last
- 3:23medical certificate, and a lot has happened since
- 3:25then. There have been some misdiagnoses and
- 3:29various things, diseases I have recovered from, and
- 3:36things like that.
- 3:38But we're going to require a lot of
- 3:42investigation and revealing of some things that I
- 3:50didn't want to reveal private medical information.
- 3:56And so, I decided not to apply for
- 4:00a new medical certificate. Now, that doesn't mean
- 4:04I can't fly,
- 4:07but it does kind of limit my options
- 4:10a little bit. They have a new, something
- 4:15I didn't have back
- 4:16when I was flying in the 90s called
- 4:23sport pilot rules. Under sport pilot rules, you're
- 4:32restricted
- 4:33in a number of ways, but the most
- 4:35important thing to me right now is
- 4:41you don't have to have a medical certificate.
- 4:47You just have to have a driver's license.
- 4:51They figure that for these purposes, if you're
- 4:57physically qualified to drive a car,
- 5:00then you are physically qualified to fly an
- 5:03airplane, which kind of makes sense to me.
- 5:10Again, it's not about the technical proficiency, it's
- 5:14only about your medical fitness.
- 5:19So, there you go. That's what I'm going
- 5:24for now.
- 5:26And I do have a driver's license, and
- 5:30so I've got a lot of catching up
- 5:33to do in terms of
- 5:36efficiency and knowledge. A lot of things have
- 5:38changed since the 90s.
- 5:40They really weren't using GPS very much in
- 5:44aviation.
- 5:47There wasn't even, I don't even know if
- 5:50there was a complete,
- 5:54or not complete, but sufficient GPS network of
- 6:01satellites. I've been reading about the first
- 6:06flight around the world nonstop without refueling in
- 6:12an airplane.
- 6:13This happened in the late 1980s, I believe,
- 6:20and they used something similar to GPS then.
- 6:29But I know for a while it was
- 6:29only available to the military,
- 6:32and then the accuracy was not that good
- 6:34because they didn't have enough
- 6:36satellites to provide the accuracy that you get
- 6:38today, where you can actually
- 6:43navigate through a building with GPS.
- 6:47I think you can only get within a
- 6:50few yards or something.
- 6:51I don't know. Anyway, that's just one of
- 6:54the things that has changed.
- 6:58Different classes of airspace, radio calls, and things
- 7:03of that nature. So,
- 7:05got a lot to relearn and a lot
- 7:06to learn, things that I've forgotten, things that
- 7:08have changed.
- 7:11But my medical history is not going to
- 7:16hold me back. The limitations are I can
- 7:20only fly under
- 7:21visual flight rules, which means I can't fly
- 7:26in weather where I can't see, right?
- 7:32Using instruments only. So only VFR and only
- 7:40during the daytime. And you can only fly
- 7:44certain
- 7:45slower aircraft, although they've just expanded that quite
- 7:51a bit. So,
- 7:54the types of aircraft are pretty reasonable that
- 8:00you can fly. And I can only carry
- 8:03one passenger
- 8:05at a time. So, that's how I have
- 8:16made my decision with regarding the FAA and
- 8:22medical
- 8:25qualification. And I got somebody coming behind me
- 8:31on a lawnmower. A driver
- 8:35wearing a t-shirt that just says parks
- 8:37on the back. So, it's probably a department
- 8:41that he's in
- 8:43from a city or something like that, maybe
- 8:46Fayetteville, possibly Springdale. If you know it's right
- 8:50in the border here between Fayetteville and Springdale.
- 8:56Walking for 12 minutes. Not doing too bad
- 8:59here. E-bikes, e-scooters, I saw a
- 9:03whole fleet of them
- 9:06when I drove up and parked.
- 9:14Started on the trail. Never tried one of
- 9:18those. I think,
- 9:20I would hope they have some sort of
- 9:22battery indicator on them. So, you know when
- 9:28you're halfway out,
- 9:30halfway down, you can get back to your
- 9:32car. It's kind of shady.
- 9:37I'm on the south side of
- 9:39Lake Fayetteville. Shady on this side.
- 9:42It's good. Didn't wear sunscreen today.
- 9:46I have been
- 9:46when I go out to mow and things
- 9:49like that. Just got to be aware of
- 9:52sunstroke and or
- 9:56heat exhaustion. I'm not trying to break any
- 10:04records today. Just one of those times where
- 10:07it's been a while. Not in great shape.
- 10:13I don't mean it when I say Lake
- 10:16Fayetteville is beautiful. You
- 10:19have some nice woods here.
- 10:20I can see a little bit of the
- 10:23lake through the trees. It's the middle
- 10:27of summer so all the leaves are out.
- 10:31Not like winter time and you can see
- 10:34all kinds of water.
- 10:38But it's nice. Nice to be out here
- 10:41in the shade with a canopy of trees
- 10:44overhead and they kept it
- 10:48pretty nice. You can see where somebody has
- 10:52been trimming limbs and leaving them on the
- 10:56side of the
- 10:57trail. So far today I haven't seen any
- 11:01graffiti. I have seen it in the past
- 11:02but not today.
- 11:08So it's good. So far people are respecting
- 11:14the open spaces available to a community of
- 11:21human beings.
- 11:22I can understand wanting to speak your mind
- 11:25and publish your thoughts and I think if
- 11:29you want to
- 11:31do that in a way where people can
- 11:33seek you out and find you.
- 11:36That's one thing but if you
- 11:39invade a public space and force it upon
- 11:42people that's another thing entirely.
- 11:44Humans I think are communal by nature and
- 11:50for the most part I think
- 11:55we do a good job of respecting each
- 12:01other. There's always struggles here and there
- 12:07and it's always the hope that someday we'll
- 12:14all live in peace together but
- 12:16it's not the way things are now but
- 12:21for the most part we do.
- 12:28Really what you hear these big world
- 12:30events are really on the outskirts of humanity.
- 12:37I know it's easy for me to say
- 12:38that as an American
- 12:38American in this well-protected country all places
- 12:52are like that but I don't know I
- 12:56just
- 12:57I was watching this show called Star City
- 13:00which is about the it's an alternative version
- 13:03of the
- 13:05space race you know 1960s and 70s when
- 13:12Russia and the United States were trying to
- 13:15beat each other
- 13:16to various milestones and of course that was
- 13:21Soviet Russia and things have changed a bit
- 13:29I think.
- 13:32I don't know much about it which is
- 13:33why I went searching and
- 13:36found some people were kind of they were
- 13:43obviously bilingual and I think they were
- 13:47dual citizens as well but they spoke British
- 13:52English and they also spoke rutish russian
- 13:56and they were you know showing some of
- 14:00the you know regular life of Russians when
- 14:04they live
- 14:04you know where they shop for food and
- 14:09all that stuff and there was a some
- 14:14good examples of
- 14:14Soviet era housing there it's actually in the
- 14:26show Star City is was filmed mostly in
- 14:30Lithuania
- 14:32where they have a lot of this Soviet
- 14:36style architecture from the 1960s and 1970s
- 14:46got a mile in 114 which is definitely
- 14:55around where I'm supposed to be when I'm
- 14:58exercising at
- 15:0060 years old I believe 112 is the
- 15:02number got it on my fridge one mile
- 15:08in 22 minutes not too
- 15:10bad considering the state that I'm in right
- 15:13now but one of the things they said
- 15:16was that
- 15:16uh there's very little crime in Russia and
- 15:22uh something I didn't know I can walk
- 15:28around the
- 15:29cities apparently without fear being robbed or having
- 15:34violence done upon you so at this point
- 15:39in time the United States is at war
- 15:42and Russia is at war but there are
- 15:44probably the vast majority
- 15:48of Russians and Americans are not directly involved
- 15:53in it we're just getting along
- 15:57standing in line yielding the right of way
- 16:05not defacing community
- 16:10areas with graffiti and so forth that's a
- 16:15good thing too bad about the war but
- 16:21uh
- 16:22I think that you know shows that there
- 16:26is a bit of hope for mankind and
- 16:30that at our cores
- 16:33we are able to get along I just
- 16:38need to work on those fringes yeah I
- 16:40mean this is gonna be
- 16:41a pretty decent workout today and it's kind
- 16:42of sad but you know what can I
- 16:46say I didn't make it
- 16:54so uh got a little hope for myself
- 16:56as well individually on my own health if
- 17:01I can get out
- 17:01of here today and I can get out
- 17:04of here the next time I'm available next
- 17:09time I have
- 17:10an opening in my schedule possibly Thursday you
- 17:16shall see but uh
- 17:19uh other than that my body's doing pretty
- 17:23good I recently had one of those don't
- 17:30know what I did
- 17:31things you ever have that you wake up
- 17:33and you're just in pain and you don't
- 17:35know what you did to
- 17:35cause it some weird muscles under my arm
- 17:44my armpit it's kind of weird never really
- 17:48had that kind of
- 18:02heat and rest and that did the trick
- 18:06a couple days of heat and rest and
- 18:08it was good as new
- 18:12didn't help that I exacerbated it a little
- 18:14bit but uh I recovered nonetheless so back
- 18:27to the
- 18:28parking lot here you can hear the traffic
- 18:29so I'm going to sign off I'll say
- 18:37thanks for being
- 18:38with me today and listening and traveling along
- 18:42this journey of health and fitness and uh
- 18:47I hope you are having a beautiful day
- 18:50wherever you are and remember if you got
- 18:53the fever keep
- 18:54it burning if you don't catch the fever
- 18:56and I will see you next time on
- 19:01Running: A FEVER
