- 1:32I'm doing great. Thanks.
- 1:33Mike, thank you for having me today.
- 1:34Pretty excited about doing this today with you.
- 1:38This is fun, you know, half about half of our guests.
- 1:42I know in some capacity, whether it's working with them, with
- 1:45equipment, through Gill, or my former Our coaching life, the
- 1:49other half are sometimes brand-new.
- 1:51I've never met them outside of an email or something.
- 1:55I feel like you and I kind of fit in the middle.
- 1:59We've done some work at Gill and things like that but you're not
- 2:01a complete stranger, we it's interesting.
- 2:04Social media actually is how we kind of met and started talking
- 2:08and things like that. So that's this will be a lot of
- 2:10fun to learn more about you and what you do and how you do it.
- 2:14I tell you, you know, we always do a little pre-interview if
- 2:17you're listening. And for the first time, we
- 2:18always do a little pre-interview that's not recorded just to get
- 2:21to know the guests a little bit, get some flow and Direction.
- 2:24Let me tell you. If you have any affinity for the
- 2:27state of Arkansas, you've got the right guy right here, man.
- 2:32Cedric is Arkansas through and through.
- 2:35So citric, take us back, born in Arkansas.
- 2:39Ran track, tell us a little bit about the, the background there
- 2:42as it relates to track. Yes, sir.
- 2:44So I'm of course, going in Little Rock Arkansas.
- 2:47The high school here. So went the Seven Hills High
- 2:50School and I've always known the University of Arkansas was
- 2:55always had the best track program whatever.
- 2:58So once I got into track, I think I got a track maybe around
- 3:02seven grade but you know, I knew that if I was going to school, I
- 3:05actually like the University of Kentucky basketball program, but
- 3:09if I wanted to run track Arkansas with the place
- 3:12Universal arcs, I wasn't playing.
- 3:13Yeah, I still didn't believe that I got into it.
- 3:17Absolutely, I have been at Arkansas, all alike, not ramped
- 3:21up to place. The course.
- 3:22Good Arkansas was is the place where I love and we're having to
- 3:27be situated now. So, growing up in Little Rock
- 3:30and through high school and you ran track since 7th grade.
- 3:33It's amazing what Drew you to track and what events did you
- 3:36do? And how, how did High School
- 3:38career go? Where, I mean, you went to a
- 3:40spoiler, you went to the University of Arkansas, you must
- 3:42have been pretty good, but how does a house like this through
- 3:45High School directly interested in?
- 3:47The so I grew up in Little Rock Arkansas, but I grew up in an
- 3:52area that was challenged with balance and gangs and things
- 3:55like that. So at the time, I was in seventh
- 3:58grade and some older kids at a high school, we're trying to
- 4:04jump me at the time, I outran, like these 10th graders and 11th
- 4:09graders and I was in seventh grade and, and one guy he see me
- 4:13at school, the next day, he's like to, you should run track.
- 4:17And so is crazy as it is. Whatever.
- 4:20You know, he was, it was one of those, you know, kind of born
- 4:23out of necessity type deals where I mean, I literally have
- 4:26my backpack and I was booking and I think it was no maybe a
- 4:31two or three city blocks or something like that, but they
- 4:34will valves on my heels and I was like, look I can't I can't
- 4:37do this today and I ran and I outran them and in fact, how did
- 4:41he outrun us? And that's the kind of thing
- 4:43that introduced me to track. So I mean, I know we're
- 4:46laughing. About it and I can't help but
- 4:50draw the parallel, love you outran, those kids and got into
- 4:54track and went to college and doing what you do now.
- 4:56But you also outran. He'll look, I know a little bit
- 4:59of that Little Rock's, you know, it's got some some troubled
- 5:01areas and to be economic issues and gangs and things like that.
- 5:07But you also outran you know, that you could have easily.
- 5:10I don't want to easily you could have fallen into that life but
- 5:14instead you chose a different path.
- 5:16I love that. That Elegy for track.
- 5:18Actually, you know, in doubled the case it was it was I don't
- 5:24know if your hair is long time ago, to have like banging A
- 5:26Little Rock stuff like this. I was kind of born right there
- 5:28in the middle of that born before that.
- 5:31But I was growing up through elementary and middle school or
- 5:35Junior High, my time of whatever through that time.
- 5:38And so, you know, you had a choice, you know, you have to
- 5:40street life and you, if you didn't want the street like you
- 5:44had to do something extra to get out of it.
- 5:47Whatever, you know, you know, I had, you know, had a great poem
- 5:50structure of my mom and dad was there and everything like that,
- 5:55it was still there. You know, you couldn't couldn't
- 5:57escape, you know, it just just about.
- 6:00Okay, I'm just gonna go to school.
- 6:01You had to do something outside of it.
- 6:03And so, I literally, you know, that after that day, that I
- 6:07outran. Those guys, I had to walk a
- 6:09mile, a different way to school to school.
- 6:13Come on. She end up doing an Indian what
- 6:15we call into him. In this was what we call a
- 6:19minority to majority in so the programs are geared toward
- 6:23getting your inner city, maybe black kids to a more rural white
- 6:27school so on. So it's kind of we have a and I
- 6:31think it's still your now where we had a bill in arts that where
- 6:35you were trying to even out the schools.
- 6:37And so the in the end was a part of that program to where, you
- 6:41know, I could go from the inner city and I literally went 30
- 6:44miles from school where I actually, Guarded by track head
- 6:48as if Neil whatever a little bit later.
- 6:50So and that's actually how I ended up like you said running
- 6:54away from that, that life and doing something better with
- 6:58myself in that amazing. You're telling a story you're
- 7:00fairly young guy. You're telling the same story
- 7:04that, you know, people that were born in the 40s and 50s and 60s.
- 7:07I mean, I know we've made some progress but I mean man come on
- 7:14right? That's amazing.
- 7:16We could have a whole podcast just on redlining and that just
- 7:22ridiculous or dick this stuff. So what so obviously you did you
- 7:26maybe got introduced to the Sprints when you started track
- 7:30is that where you kind of navigate it towards or do any
- 7:32jumps and hurdles know? So, of course, there's a program
- 7:37that I've never had any of that. I kind of like I said, we want
- 7:41to see Heels, which was a you will it will.
- 7:45They predominantly white school with a whole bunch of black
- 7:49athletes wintertime or whatever. So obviously, you know, we got
- 7:53put into Athletics and putting the strength and athletic
- 7:56positions and which was a pretty cool thing.
- 7:59I started out actually kind of running like I 800 400 and ended
- 8:02up going on down further into your strengths.
- 8:05As I moved up through High School, of course, you know we
- 8:09back then which I still do. Today, I carry style used to
- 8:13play every different sport but we play football in the street.
- 8:16Yeah, the school goes, things like that.
- 8:18So I played all three Sports, it just ended up by the time.
- 8:21I got to high school. I love actually running track.
- 8:25Hmm. So not steal played all three
- 8:27Sports throughout all the way through my senior year track and
- 8:31field was where my heart just kind of landed it.
- 8:34So what was it? Because, you know, you name
- 8:36three great Sports. They're obviously I'm a little
- 8:38biased. I think track is the best sport.
- 8:40What was it about track that? Like yeah, you know, I loved all
- 8:42the sports but my heart was in track, you have control, you you
- 8:50is something that you literally can make and it's nothing wrong
- 8:54with team sports, and love team sports the love, the support of
- 8:57it. But if you've been in track and
- 9:00field, we could literally be at a sec meet, you still friends
- 9:05with the people. You ran against.
- 9:07It's so deep, detract world, in the still like that all the way
- 9:10down. Into middle school or a you and
- 9:12so on, you can run against someone to still be friends and
- 9:15or you could, you know, will be attracting mates.
- 9:17And, and I remember when we was young, we would mix and mingle
- 9:20with different schools and things like that.
- 9:22So, so track brings about a family.
- 9:26It also brings about, you know, a sense of hey, you know, you
- 9:30got to lead this thing. I think I'm a team captain maybe
- 9:33in like tenth grade, which I had no idea.
- 9:35Like, you know, it wasn't that I was just that good.
- 9:38It was just, I guess how I work with the other kids and things
- 9:41like Like that. And so, I mean it just feels
- 9:44something. I remember I had a friend from
- 9:46Cabot which was, you know, I mean, we just, we should have
- 9:49been friends just from where he's from and so on.
- 9:52But we literally raced each other all the time, whatever.
- 9:56We got to a point where like, hey man, how are you doing?
- 9:58So we built a friendship on just racing, I don't, you know, I
- 10:01don't know, you know where else you can do that.
- 10:04So yeah that's true you talk about a family.
- 10:09A lot of times with football and basketball teams, you know, it's
- 10:11considered a family, you know, depend you know how it goes and
- 10:14what you do to me, what you're describing is a sense of
- 10:17community because it comes outside of your school now and
- 10:21it is interesting to track right?
- 10:22Because it's one of those Sports where.
- 10:24Yeah certainly your lined up against the next guy and who
- 10:27gets to the Finish Line as first.
- 10:28But you're you're really that I don't want to say You're really
- 10:30but you're a big part of it too. Is, can I stop that stopwatch
- 10:34faster than I ever have? Can I stretch that measuring
- 10:37tape farther than I? I ever have you're really up
- 10:40against this, you know, this universal photo, which is time
- 10:43and distance. That's so cool.
- 10:50Truly, you know, I guess equality type sport.
- 10:54Everybody has to compete against that bar or everybody gets that
- 10:58same line, you know, everybody gets the same distance so it's
- 11:02truly, you can come from anywhere and you could be
- 11:04anybody, everybody competes on the same playing field.
- 11:09Whatever. So, I will, you know, I thought
- 11:10that was a pretty good quote, you know what you, right,
- 11:13everybody does conduct compete against the same poll ball pole,
- 11:17you know, everything is pretty much the same across the board.
- 11:19Yeah, Alex heacock. He's the head coach at William
- 11:24and Mary that recently made a terrible decision to drop their
- 11:27men's indoor and outdoor track teams.
- 11:30And he made some really interesting statement that kind
- 11:35of like you to what you just said right there.
- 11:36Like oh like we live it so we sometimes Forget it one of his
- 11:40tweets and I would encourage you to go on Twitter and find Alex.
- 11:44He got one of his tweets was about inclusiveness that, you
- 11:48know, we have so many different event areas from throws jump
- 11:52Sprints distance at cetera that we take everybody tall, short,
- 11:57big small, it like there is a place for you in track and field
- 12:03and then it's his next tweet was the diversity.
- 12:08It's like, Again, black brown white age, I mean it literally
- 12:14does not matter. We have some place where you can
- 12:18achieve success compete in something.
- 12:21Absolutely. Yeah, I mean the barrier entry,
- 12:25I mean when you talk about tennis and golf and swimming, I
- 12:28mean, boy, you're buried in trees, pretty high.
- 12:31The expense of coaching expensive facilities.
- 12:34I was talking to someone the other day.
- 12:35We were come out swimming. I'm from I'm from rural Alabama.
- 12:39Do you know similar ish to literally Rock bigger city than
- 12:42what I grew up in? But, you know, my school didn't
- 12:44have a swimming pool. So there there would have been
- 12:46no way for me to become a champion swimmer.
- 12:48Not at all. But we had a track and even I've
- 12:52heard of places that you don't even have a track.
- 12:54I think a few years, say a few years ago, I think it was in the
- 12:5790s that that's how old I'm getting such a few years ago,
- 13:00was in the 90s. I think it was Jasper Texas.
- 13:04Remember when I was in high school, I remember reading in
- 13:06Sports Illustrated, they won the Texas.
- 13:09The championship without a track and I was like holy cow like
- 13:13like that's pretty impressive. Like you mean first of all in
- 13:16the state of Texas even but like you're able to coach the sport
- 13:20with the kids that are available in your school without a proper
- 13:23facility just it literally is the greatest sport in the world
- 13:26you know it I say it all the time I just need to feel you
- 13:32know you know you know that's right.
- 13:37So you go through silver. And he'll it's Sylvan Hills and
- 13:40do a great job. It seemed like, maybe you were
- 13:43always destined to go to the University of Arkansas, or did
- 13:47you choose are like, well, I chose for the, I'm not literally
- 13:51walked on our universe Arkansas. I mean, you gotta think the
- 13:54level in which Universe are copper.
- 13:57I think, matter of fact, you know, great names like Daniel
- 14:00Lincoln and Samuel glug. All alone walking on at the
- 14:03time, I whatever. So I chose Universe art style
- 14:06based on how good they were in track.
- 14:08Like I said, Love University of Kentucky but they were the best
- 14:11about school at the time. I just knew that if I that I was
- 14:16dead, passionate about track. I should go there.
- 14:18That's why I enrolled. Oh I applied and got accepted my
- 14:21senior year and so on. And I was showing people to my
- 14:25acceptance or I think we got acceptance letters back in the
- 14:27day, we didn't have social media.
- 14:42So, we had to kind of work my way in there, but it was just
- 14:47because I wanted to be there. I mean, I, you know, I ended up
- 14:52in a kid in there and still not knowing because I came from a
- 14:57track program, but it wasn't even like we know.
- 15:00Now, you know, I, if I had a question, I can say, Hey, you
- 15:04know, Mike, what would you do about this or something?
- 15:06Like, we just didn't have that, it will just run.
- 15:09You know? And so one of the big things and
- 15:11you know later is I try to tell people, hey, this is what
- 15:15running is about and it's why you do it.
- 15:17Well, I didn't know any of that stuff.
- 15:19I was just going and I got up there and Olympia.
- 15:55I think about yourself though. So first of all you accept the
- 16:00challenge to walk on at, you know, as a former coach at
- 16:04Mississippi State, this is a little hard to say but it is the
- 16:07truth. You choose the challenge of
- 16:10walking onto one of the greatest College Programs we have.
- 16:14You were there during a very special time.
- 16:15It's interesting. You and I time overlap while you
- 16:18were on the Arkansas Team, I was coaching at Mississippi State,
- 16:23so you took that challenge and then when you got there, you
- 16:26didn't make it the first time. You try it out.
- 16:28You could have easily talked about paths earlier, right?
- 16:31You could have easily quit and just become a student and, and
- 16:33had a great why? I mean, that's not a bad path to
- 16:35choose. It's the majority path, right?
- 16:37Most people go to school and Don't do try you.
- 16:40Try it out again and then when you make it, you know, during
- 16:44this whole time you're realizing like, oh my Olympian.
- 16:46Oh, my All-American. Like, you know, again there's a
- 16:49choice. You'd be like, well, wait a
- 16:50minute, I'm not. What am I doing here or like?
- 16:55Okay, I may not be an Olympian but I'm gonna give it my best
- 16:58and let's see where the chips fall on this thing.
- 17:00So, I love that you're telling us something pretty important
- 17:02about your attitude towards achievement like the trying
- 17:06aspect of it. I think it's a testament to our
- 17:10sport of track and field in Denison Testament to character,
- 17:16always try to push people like dude, just set a goal.
- 17:20Setter drink, you know? Just believe in something and go
- 17:24after it spoke. It's supposed to look
- 17:27impossible. That's what makes it, you know,
- 17:29you know, if it looks impossible and it looks hard, that's what's
- 17:32going to make it work. It, you know.
- 17:34So so it's supposed to look that way and even supposed to feel
- 17:37them. But that's what's going to make
- 17:40when you get there so much more better so much more important.
- 17:43That's what the, that's where the glory comes from, you know,
- 17:46when it, when it doesn't look like the right.
- 17:49And so now, I'm saying that now, in hindsight, I didn't, I didn't
- 17:56know that. So, talk to me during this time
- 18:37there at Arkansas. Again you know, I'm a little
- 18:40close to it. I think it's one of the greatest
- 18:42times for the University of Arkansas, even though boy,
- 18:46that's a hard one to do because the Arkansas has so many
- 18:48national champions but this time period specifically, your last
- 18:51couple of years ago for and 05, I was coaching Sprints and
- 18:54hurdles and jumps over at Mississippi State.
- 18:56So, and I actually most people, I think know, by now, I actually
- 19:00came from the Juco side. I was a junior college coach in
- 19:03Kansas. So I recruited actually, I
- 19:06recruited Tyson Gay as well. Well, I don't know why he didn't
- 19:09choose me. Okay, whatever he went to, Lance
- 19:11Brahman, whatever, whatever Tyson if you're listening, he
- 19:15knows I've talked to before. So bitter, it just had Destiny
- 19:19Ivy just got Steve moves and Mississippi State.
- 19:23That's right. Exactly.
- 19:24Right. And what a great kid, Man - fact
- 19:28that we're trying to stack and pouted year or whatever.
- 19:31And so we I think they meant something went to Auburn and I
- 19:34think another key was somewhere sleeping with her.
- 19:36Yeah, yeah. So we just Such a great time and
- 19:40now you bring it back so many different memories.
- 19:43But, yeah. So so, of course, I was there a
- 19:46little bit earlier than so cool. Grandma got got their 2002-2003
- 19:51season one indoor. One indoor we didn't do a triple
- 19:59crown so so, yeah, we didn't do trip breath again.
- 20:01When I do, I think it was maybe our affordable, but the
- 20:05greatness was really starting to build.
- 20:07Now, course it was. It was a triple crown back in
- 20:092000 or back in 1999 or whatever.
- 20:12So dealt those seniors and those other people always teased us,
- 20:16you don't got ripped around whatever so that's how great
- 20:19their house all day. That's the level they're at.
- 20:38But at the time we were, I think we're building that he had
- 20:45coached. I say he cooks Madonna had just
- 20:47hired code brahminy and I had no idea.
- 20:51I wonder where the junior college see it.
- 20:54So I had no idea how good coach Brian was or how good he did it
- 20:57Bart. Of course you had a coach boobs
- 21:00and I think Brian Wellman was up there.
- 21:02Practicing like we still had be, Rock was still running, just a
- 21:06lot of grateful still up there. Are around and kind of hanging
- 21:10around placing things like this. You got to see people.
- 21:13So, of course, I didn't have any idea of the magnitude that was
- 21:17going on, but it was still a great environment.
- 21:19Yeah. Kenny everything.
- 21:21All your jumper. So every day, when we practice
- 21:23in the indoor facility, everybody would be in there.
- 21:26Maybe not the distance runs all the time, but they would be in
- 21:29there. So so a lot of my knowledge came
- 21:32from just kind of being around people.
- 21:34So I would be up there and I remember Melville is And all the
- 21:38great job just literally sounded like a track meet watching them
- 21:43practice. I mean it was you know, they're
- 21:45being they're talking noise each other.
- 21:47I mean practice was it was intense so that's going over
- 21:51there to Jumping kid. You know you got something going
- 21:54on at the high jump here. Oh everything you, you know if
- 21:58we won running I think maybe the distance got to get it there
- 22:01beforehand and so you would have maybe coach Mac if he got them
- 22:05in the he didn't like running them on the bank or whatever
- 22:07which what do you know, reason what they would kind of be hard
- 22:10on that ride on their legs and feet?
- 22:12And at the time we it's a track underneath the bank track and so
- 22:16we were running outside of it. So it's a so a lot of times they
- 22:20would put us on the outside when the weather wasn't good for us
- 22:22here in Fayetteville Arkansas, but I sounded to say to kind of
- 22:25give you a picture. Yeah.
- 22:27Of all of these people and all of these great people kind of
- 22:31running and training and things like that, that's going on.
- 22:35I mean I mean just just just greatness.
- 22:38Everywhere in even in that, you know, Coast gold.
- 22:42You got to think he I think at that time he still had, you
- 22:45know, maybe eight guys, you know, lazing.
- 22:48I haven't had already been to the Olympics or whatever.
- 22:51So even the greatness that was coming in behind him.
- 22:54Behind them were, you know? They were good.
- 22:55They were out there to be good. It's like you get to experience
- 22:59that on a day-to-day basis when it came time, I think when coach
- 23:03Brahma came and he brought a couple athletes with him, but
- 23:06Tyson gave her on camera. And then we'll come in in the
- 23:09next year. And so I was fortunate enough to
- 23:12the kind of recruit them and LaShawn.
- 23:14Merritt course, you know, he went there, he Carolina walk
- 23:17dicks. All those people, you know, I
- 23:18kind of have a host and bringing it was really cool.
- 23:21So so you got to think even, you know, no, they ran against us,
- 23:27we ended up just being friends, only just be a recruiting.
- 23:31So they spent the weekend with, you know, you know, we were
- 23:34literally just kind of hang out and you know you go to a party.
- 23:38Heather, but we stay friends. We didn't have social media back
- 23:40and so we kept each other strong stuff like that.
- 23:43And then we see each other attract mates, you know, that
- 23:46would kind of develop. But it was, it was always an
- 23:49awesome, awesome time. Specially, you got to our indoor
- 23:51meats and our SEC Meats, which, you know, it was still a great
- 23:55meet up and I'm pretty sure the coaches had the same type of,
- 23:59you know, it may be some type of arrival, but it still was a
- 24:02mutual respect going on or whatever.
- 24:04You know, I remember That's what it was, 2005.
- 24:09I think was 2005. When when Sonny Richard broken
- 24:12record, Quran Clement broken record but the 2005 endure that
- 24:17sound right. Yeah, they do, right?
- 24:20Yeah, I think walls would 2010 at last and I want to share two
- 24:26isn't your 2005 or 2004 it? I think 05 we were at Kentucky
- 24:33for scc's indoors and Vanderbilt for outdoors.
- 24:36Yes. If I remember, right?
- 24:38Well, what about? I'm thinking of nasty.
- 24:41Oh, I'm doing an imitation Arkansas.
- 24:45Yeah. This limitation at the you 2004
- 25:09he said, hold on. He's just hold your horses.
- 25:11I got something for you and this is a Tyson Invitational become
- 25:16back to Nationals quranic. Let me go, 40, 45 better.
- 25:20Hey I mean so you got coach miles which is which is total
- 25:23away or whatever saying, hey just wait just wait, I got
- 25:27something for you. I remember you say it there and
- 25:30literally come back with two, three weeks later at Nationals
- 25:33and and crunch time it breaks, you know, he goes 40 45 ever.
- 25:38So, so, I mean, so to, you know, greatness and things like that
- 25:44there was around, so it was, it was definitely a, you're
- 25:47literally bringing back the memories that you're talking to
- 25:50me. So that's why I'm kind of, I
- 25:51remember about that. I was at Ball State University
- 25:55coaching the women when I got the opportunity to come to
- 25:57Mississippi State. And I, and my whole career was
- 26:00to get to the SEC. Because, I mean, I have some non
- 26:03SE see people on here. Sometimes I'm like, you just
- 26:05don't know that Cece. You grow up in.
- 26:07It is the conference. Okay, I'm so sorry.
- 26:10I love all the other conferences now, but it was all about the
- 26:13SEC, so my whole career was to get to the SEC.
- 26:16And I remember when Al Schmidt told me, you know, hey, you
- 26:20know, you got the job and everything and I remember
- 26:22thinking, oh man, life just got easier like recruiting.
- 26:28No one knows what I'd call ball. Stay pure like a who's where's
- 26:30balls? They discussed up as like
- 26:32everybody's Gonna Know, Mississippi, State and SEC and
- 26:35then I get there. And I remember, One of the first
- 26:37people I recruited was LZ Coleman.
- 26:39Headley, who is from New York's at the end or High School
- 26:41National Record holder, and the 400 and we signed him spoiler,
- 26:46we signed him at Mississippi state, but I remember talking to
- 26:49LZ and I was like so LD, who else are you considerate?
- 26:52And he was like, yeah, you know, Florida and I was like, oh, oh
- 26:55yeah Mouse. He was like Texas.
- 26:58I think was one Arkansas, it was all Baylor because he's a
- 27:03quarter mile, ER, and I was like, I was like, wait a minute,
- 27:06wait, I've got to beat Mouse Holloway for a kid.
- 27:09I've got to be lanced. Brahmin who I went to battle
- 27:12with and Juco ranks. I'm like wait a minute, life
- 27:15didn't get easier, life just got harder.
- 27:31It's terrible, it's terrible. Let me tell you, every I should
- 27:36say. Everybody.
- 27:36You know, a lot of people dream like again that was me.
- 27:38I was the dream where I was like man I want to coach SEC and then
- 27:41you get in there and it is the literal blood bath.
- 27:46I mean, we at Mississippi State, you know, we ran three flat 301
- 27:50in the 4 by 4 and we have new pretty good, right?
- 27:53I don't think we finish better than fifth in the conference in
- 27:55the 4 by 4. Most of the time we didn't even
- 27:58run it. We were, we weren't even in it
- 27:59for the team title. So we would rest them for
- 28:01Nationals my last year. This, this is literally was part
- 28:05of why I got out of coaching. I'm the opposite of you.
- 28:07You were like a challenge. All right.
- 28:09I'll run with Tyson, whatever. Yeah, I was like, man.
- 28:11I'm probably not cut out for this get 2005.
- 28:14We're at Nationals. I can't was it Sacramento.
- 28:18I came here was they all again. They all, you know, I'm so old.
- 28:22They all blend together a little bit but we yeah, we ran three
- 28:26flat .8. I think, was just over three
- 28:29flat but you know, when you run three flat, you're supposed to
- 28:31win, I mean, seriously, three flat, and for before you're
- 28:35supposed to win, we Were fifth at Nationals, Ellis you set the
- 28:41National Record Xavier Willie? Yep.
- 28:44Maybe Benny was on that. Yep.
- 28:46Yeah, they set the National Record.
- 28:49I think Texas Tech was up there. Minnesota, who?
- 28:53I mean we got it, we ran three flat, we got fit subject, dude.
- 28:58I was like, I'm an I don't know that I can do any better of a
- 29:01job for me. They with me so bad, they ran
- 29:07me. I quit coaching to move to Vegas
- 29:08and play poker for a living. They wouldn't be so bad.
- 29:10All those guys had Henry and Dennis and Lance Brahman.
- 29:16Thank you. I know, Lance Brockman listens,
- 29:17Lance, thanks. You just ran me right out of
- 29:19coaching my friend. I tell you what.
- 29:24Brahman is such a legend in his own, right?
- 29:29And I mean like he just knowledge.
- 29:32I think to me just to me was before his time, I was literally
- 29:37took just memories because I was recording it.
- 29:40And so I still actually I wish I would have got him but I got all
- 29:43my workouts from 2002. He used to put them on like a
- 29:49little counter that I T. So from that's why we used to
- 29:52all keep but I literally got them all and so it just I had no
- 29:58idea. I just keep the workout that the
- 30:00time and I some reason I just kept him for the next 20 years
- 30:03or whatever, but his workouts were just like, I don't know,
- 30:08like golden, whatever. I had no idea how good they were
- 30:11reading and so on like that. And so when I got into coaching,
- 30:15of course, I was nowhere near coach's kid type of athletes
- 30:18that he was coached by modify them all and kind of changed it,
- 30:21but just Information that that, that that he would give, you
- 30:25know, that's literally how I started coaching, you know.
- 30:29It B I remember also coach McDonald which I don't you know
- 30:33I don't I don't want to praise them but literally parts to me
- 30:37came from coach you know, McDonald Coke, Brahman and Coke
- 30:41Greendale and so I will watch watch coach Mac.
- 30:44He would coach the kids, you know, the distance problem and
- 30:47so at the time we didn't really get to see him a lot but when we
- 30:50did we'll just pretty neat. I think I was tired one day.
- 30:53Maybe I was over to the side and he was coaching them and I just
- 30:56remember him talking. I think maybe they're doing like
- 30:58a like repeat that out into something and and it taught me
- 31:03something and they had to hit a certain time so maybe they would
- 31:06do it thousands. And I think they had to maybe
- 31:09knockout 27 seconds or Twenty twenty six point five it was
- 31:13something pretty accurate and I think one kid got off and I
- 31:17heard him talking to him hey you know you know it is it is
- 31:20average. I said yeah.
- 31:23You gotta stay there, you're getting off and there's no way
- 31:26you'll get the time and I'm like, that's why we got to hit
- 31:30these laughs at this Earth. I mean, you just a little bit of
- 31:32knowledge. Now I understand, I totally
- 31:34understand it. I mean, I think he may have got
- 31:36off and maybe one kid ran too fast and so it which it made
- 31:40sense and I don't know it at the time, but he would eat this one.
- 31:43Kid would run and he would die off, maybe his to lapse into
- 31:47left before the fantasy. And another kid will be trying
- 31:50to kick, but he would run out of time.
- 31:51Time and just hearing him explain that, they have to go.
- 31:54Maybe I'll see Craig and maybe someone else or whatever Mo
- 31:58Vania or a couple of the kids are really good and they had to
- 32:02sit there and have to listen to him.
- 32:04He once told him he was explaining this time whatever so
- 32:09just that type of knowledge and you don't know what this is
- 32:12group. I still based it you know in my
- 32:14Sprite use the same type of thinking.
- 32:18I'm not saying this, right? And if it's everybody, by you
- 32:20the same type of thing, Thinking, you know, I need you
- 32:22to do this, you know, based on that.
- 32:24So you were with some just I mean it's it's weird to call
- 32:30someone a legend, right? I mean, you know, but but you're
- 32:34with some Legends here, man. I mean, you know, Lance is
- 32:36amazing. Dick is amazing.
- 32:38Lonnie is just that to me is a legend because not only is
- 32:43coaching, but his personality in optimism is just Through the
- 32:49roof coast. Of course, coach Mack your
- 32:51Woodson, these Legends, where were you?
- 32:54In your thought process? As far as becoming a coach
- 32:57yourself where you studying? I don't know, something to
- 33:01become a coach or what were you thinking for profession?
- 33:05So so, so, I never did. I thought, you know, I don't
- 33:08know, you know, it at the time, the universe are so really good
- 33:11engineer, so I'm thinking maybe like a good sign for something
- 33:14like that. I'll go back the hands of time I
- 33:16would have, you know, got a degree Green.
- 33:18I don't know teaching them something I would or whatever,
- 33:21but at the time I it will just you just got to think if you
- 33:25know a lot about cars and you just know racing, I hang around
- 33:28you. I'm just, you know, I'm going to
- 33:30know a little bit more than the average person just because I
- 33:32hung around someone that new stuff.
- 33:34And so I got into coaching because I like working with
- 33:38kids, to be honest, which I never thought I was going to be
- 33:40a coach, actually, you know, had moved back to Little Rock or
- 33:43someone's like, man, my kid makes this and I just started
- 33:46repeating some of the solid phase.
- 33:48Go to college? Yeah, some stuff already.
- 33:51Kind of knew it that I have learned.
- 33:53So being around them, I was just punch but I did not know.
- 33:56I was just calling, I was just trying to do what they said.
- 33:58Kind of your natural state is just a listen and learn and
- 34:03yeah, because I think there were people like Tyson Gay and got
- 34:12all these great psychos. Burma literally brought a
- 34:15championship, not saying that coach Mac and I won.
- 34:18He literally recruiter and brought his championship team
- 34:21Kraken barred and brought it to Arkansas, whatever, soda level
- 34:24of talent that he brought was, you know, you know, just
- 34:27amazing. And so the, the coaching had to
- 34:30be amazing. And so I would be at the back of
- 34:34the pack learning gain in my way up, just because of the fact
- 34:38that I was introduced to new information introduced, the how
- 34:41to breed introduced to this and so on and so just by me wanting
- 34:44to just get better. And then I became friends with
- 34:47people. Will they want you to get
- 34:49better? So the environment was was was
- 34:52don't get me wrong. There was people truly there,
- 34:56you know, like working with the time we reported the number one
- 35:00guy out of Ohio. I think you have to state record
- 35:03at the time or whatever and he didn't do well so so you can
- 35:07make your choice. You know, you could you could
- 35:09you could say hey I'm going to do whatever I can to be great or
- 35:11I'm going to get called in to whatever else is going on in the
- 35:15college or whatever. So I think I would just Is
- 35:18blessed in a way that I was able to pull in put out information,
- 35:22kind of make the right choices to keep me in line with going
- 35:25forward. And so I ended up starting
- 35:28coaching way after leaving University of Arkansas just
- 35:32based off the knowledge of hanging around young people, you
- 35:35know, so it was never something that I sought after never
- 35:38something that I thought about what, especially, at that time,
- 35:41you know, it was interesting. It was just having fun for me,
- 35:45whatever, but what do they say, if you If you do what you love,
- 35:50you'll never work a day in your life type of thing.
- 35:52I hear that a lot from coaches but then I'd like to remind them
- 35:55of that when they're doing their paperwork and stuff and like oh
- 35:57yeah you do you're doing what you love because it ain't all
- 35:59about being on that track baby it ain't for me but and husband
- 36:12and father would that person become what type of you know
- 36:15mother would she be what type of woman would be after?
- 36:18Matter of fact, what is your relationship with them after?
- 36:20Do they invite you to the wedding invite you and say, hey,
- 36:23you know, coach come to my graduation?
- 36:25I would rather, I would rather them invite me to family events,
- 36:30you know, you know didn't say, hey I made the run fast or
- 36:33whether it's cool, run fast and good.
- 36:35But I think at least you know in my knowledge now I love seeing
- 36:39my kids. They success I say kids I need
- 36:41to stop thinking because they're adults now but I love seeing a
- 36:43big more successful off the track you know just well On the
- 36:48track. But most people, you know, what
- 36:50are you coaster? My clothes from oppose Brown,
- 36:52whoever it was gonna end up being fast anyway or being good.
- 36:55You know, if they applied herself, what I try to look for
- 36:58is the character, you know, I think what brahmos?
- 37:01Always honest, coach Mac coachline agree on, hold on,
- 37:05with just great me and Coach big boots.
- 37:08I mean I just remembered them always being honest, I think, 10
- 37:11years ago, well not 10 years ago outside, maybe eight or nine
- 37:15years ago, coach Mac a Costa Rica I don't think I went back
- 37:19to bed, but to do something and I was in a bank and I was having
- 37:21trouble getting something done and Coach Mac, I just remembered
- 37:25it for today. Hope Matt came up behind me.
- 37:27I didn't realize it behind me said, you know, I helped this
- 37:30young man out, you know, and now telling around his Coke back
- 37:33behind me and he's like, whatever you need.
- 37:36Let's make it happen. Just how coach Mac was.
- 37:38I mean, just remember me, like, me has had thousands of athletes
- 37:43come up behind me like I'm wearing Arc.
- 37:45So good, anything like that? I mean, you know, a bank on The
- 37:51Cordon Fabian. I don't know why I came in there
- 37:53but he just stands there and and make sure I get whatever I get
- 37:57done and everything like that and so that, you know, that's
- 38:01the test whether they carry. Yeah.
- 38:04Prominent and so long. Like I could literally, you
- 38:06know, I try not to cut those God to be the things like that, but
- 38:09I could literally go with in-text a call Coach brahmana
- 38:13stunt like that and he would give would give you information.
- 38:16Yeah. So I like I said, I think
- 38:18they'll be great. Great people to be around.
- 38:21So if we're talking about me, you talking about Coach green
- 38:24and all of them, are you talking about all of those people?
- 38:26Yeah, no, I think you're right. You know, we, we are a product
- 38:30of the people around us and again, going back to, you know,
- 38:33how you got into track, we can surround ourselves with people
- 38:37who do bad, not bad people. People who do bad, or we can
- 38:40surround ourselves with people who do good and people who have
- 38:43integrity and Care Charisma and character and that To you seem
- 38:49to have surrounded yourself with and certainly, you know, having
- 38:51known a lot of the guys coaches and a few of the athletes and I
- 38:56consider Wallace and friend as well that you know, men of
- 39:00character women of character that you know, are always
- 39:03working to do the right thing at at all the time.
- 39:05So that's that's amazing and I love that you're exemplifying
- 39:09that in your your coach and your interaction with young men and
- 39:12women on a daily basis. So tell me about Arkansas,
- 39:16Baptist College, I admittedly I don't know much about that
- 39:19school. Unfortunately.
- 39:20Well well, so so Arts. Are Baptist College.
- 39:23Is is a four-year institution, I but it's junior, colleges
- 39:28Sports. Who is two years.
- 39:30And so my kids are come here. Most of the time, I'm recruiting
- 39:34me, and I really actually don't approve, but there are coming in
- 39:38and there's been two years here graduate with an associate's
- 39:42degree, and then they will end up at the editor different
- 39:46college, or whatever, you know. So, You know, D1, colleges or D
- 39:49to whoever will come in recruit the kids and I will move on.
- 39:52So that's kind of how that works.
- 39:54So, is it so that, that's interesting.
- 39:57So if I go to school at Arkansas Baptist, I could say all four
- 40:01years and receive a bachelor's solutely.
- 40:04You can have fun, but yeah. Okay, all the way through
- 40:07Masters, right? Yeah, I'm from Alabama, I don't
- 40:11really Masters, I don't know that bad.
- 40:12I'm lucky that I got an undergrad degree man.
- 40:14Come on now. Come on.
- 40:20And if you're right, exactly, and if you're an athlete, you
- 40:24can only go two years. There is no junior, senior
- 40:27Athletics. You sophomore?
- 40:29You receive your just like a, the junior?
- 40:31Yeah. I coached in the Kansas, junior
- 40:33college ranks and things like that you and you move on to a D3
- 40:36D2 NAIA D1 program after that. Yeah, exactly.
- 40:41So I actually got some kids and not everybody's going to move on
- 40:46and Trey So I actually got some kids that is graduated from our
- 40:50subchapter, your four-year degrees and I'm just as proud of
- 40:52them as I am for all of my young people that got their a degree
- 40:56and they went on, you know, I've had several kids, go to art
- 41:00style course. I've had certain, you know,
- 41:02people go to Mississippi State. I've had kids at Florida State
- 41:06and Texas Tech and and different places.
- 41:08So I got I mean I got kids at different schools as small as
- 41:12Western Kentucky even smaller school and so even my local,
- 41:17Rules around here. Recruited a lot of my kids.
- 41:19Not flannel Smith and and I think University of Arkansas at
- 41:23Little Rock to all of the schools have recruited my kids.
- 41:28I think I've had some kid to go to a state reason.
- 41:30I bring up a state I think they just ordered two pole vaulting
- 41:33maybe two years ago on a really cool looking.
- 41:36I love walking in there. Yeah, jiajia Athletics make them
- 41:40to Provost and this is the coolest thing ever to get
- 41:43graphic on there anyway. So that's funny.
- 41:46Please keep going. Keep going.
- 42:17That young man, a young lady in that wants to get better and I
- 42:21have no prayers to soak. So I'm in a program where I'm
- 42:24not trying to win the NJCAA, junior college national title.
- 42:30I just want you to get better now I have I got nothing and had
- 42:33a lot of success. I'm doing cause program.
- 42:35Yes, I have, but most of the time it's my one percent
- 42:39graduation rate that I would rather sell to you.
- 42:42Then you get it faster. It's the hey, you're a better
- 42:45person. Hey, you Got a job here.
- 42:48So I've had kids that I even got cases coaching now, whatever,
- 42:52so, which is really cool. And so, I guess he said a
- 42:56coaching, young people that are that got great careers and so
- 43:00on. And so I kind of like it that
- 43:01way, it definitely benefits me and I ended up, you know, I end
- 43:05up getting some really, really talented kids I or Ivor, I say
- 43:09that I've had some kids that were maybe passed up by your D1
- 43:13program today. Two programs, I think I had a
- 43:15kid, Mike It washed it, I think. I mean like 52 seconds in the
- 43:20400 which is totally on, recruitable by a four-year
- 43:23school, you know, left outgoing, 46:10 20-point 40, holy crap, in
- 43:30three, you know, and so then dick goes into my development
- 43:36mindset. It was always, I never had the
- 43:39talent that I had at, you know, that the Universe was always,
- 43:44you know, what can I do with this?
- 43:45Young lady who runs the minute. Can I get You down the
- 43:4755-second, you know? And that's how it happened.
- 43:50I've never you know not my kid Kennedy, now with 20 point but
- 43:54I've been coaching, it's not great.
- 43:56But I've never had, you know, recruiting in a 21 Low kids or
- 44:00anything like that. I just have to take time and
- 44:03take you from a 22 to 21 1 to 20 point, you know, you know,
- 44:08Haiti, you know that type of deal?
- 44:10Yes, I've had success that way. Well, I love the uniqueness of
- 44:14that college because you're right, especially in the Junior
- 44:16College route. You know, not everybody is going
- 44:18to go on to compete, athletically at a 4-year.
- 44:22So I love that option that. Okay, if my career is my
- 44:26athletic career is over, I stayed the same school.
- 44:29I keep going like the continuity there and you know the academic
- 44:34success there. That's super unique is right
- 44:36now. If you go to a traditional
- 44:38junior college and you don't go on, athletically, will you still
- 44:41if you're going to go on, academically got to transfer
- 44:43schools and all that. That's that's super unique.
- 44:46How long have you been there now?
- 44:47Now, so so, dr. Fitts he'll hide me on, is the
- 44:51first track coach. So we, I started to track
- 44:53program back into that taking are starting to thousand solder.
- 44:57Trying to 2009 for the 2010 season in 2010 to.
- 45:01Now, I've been the head coach there and so dr.
- 45:04Fitch Hill, which was the president, at the time, it's not
- 45:06the president anymore. He hired me on and gave me.
- 45:10My first coaching position. I was a trainer before but I was
- 45:13never a coach. So my first coaching position,
- 45:16was a head coach. Um, Baptist College and which I
- 45:21literally can't. So, this was 2009-2010.
- 45:26I literally had kids from like 2007 2008 and so graduates.
- 45:33So what you what you know you're not dealing with first high
- 45:35school after he dealing with maybe some kids that didn't run
- 45:38the first year and so on at the time.
- 45:41So Katrina, I think Hurricane Katrina happened in two
- 45:44thousand, five, two thousand. Five.
- 45:47So I literally had kids from Louisiana, like that and 2010
- 45:53and so the deal it's helped me to to not judge.
- 45:59It taught me to kind of look at people a little bit different
- 46:03and it helped develop me because you're dealing with kids that
- 46:06came from just a bad situation. And so you know because at the
- 46:11time you know a lot of the key people from from from from New
- 46:14Orleans area, Peter went to Dallas to Houston and Rock
- 46:17things like that. So I had a lot of kids from that
- 46:20area, you know, from the area there.
- 46:22And so it helped develop me to become some of the coaches,
- 46:26helped me develop some characteristics that didn't make
- 46:29me want to focus on just running fast.
- 46:31Hey, young men, are you all right?
- 46:33Young lady. Do you need anything?
- 46:35And so that's kind of how I ended up going.
- 46:39I ended up staying that way. You know, I've never, you know,
- 46:42I just was never too caught up into how fast you could run and
- 46:46so When I ended up with Talent, it will just like, just a
- 46:49byproduct. We want something.
- 46:51Like I had to just totally focus on all my fast kids, so, it's
- 46:56some kind of glad, I mean, no coaching probably won't start
- 46:59out their way. But I'm glad I went through it
- 47:01because it actually helped me out That's interesting what you
- 47:05said you don't recruit or you don't recruit much or most of
- 47:08your kids coming from Arkansas. Or I would assume at the worst.
- 47:12It's coming from the regional area, you know.
- 47:15Well so so now this is kind of where I think Social Media stuff
- 47:19will get into or or just people looking online.
- 47:23I think I have one kid, you know, it's Arkansas, Baptist
- 47:25study just went down the list and they seeing the age, you
- 47:29know, you know. And so that's how I ended up,
- 47:30you know. Whatever.
- 47:34So I do recruit, I ended up having, I started out with just
- 47:38me and at first. And so I just ended up getting
- 47:42kids who couldn't get in school and they were just looking for
- 47:45somewhere. And so what I did is just make
- 47:48the best out of those kids and Dad success.
- 47:51I think my second year coaching Junior College.
- 47:54We got second in the 4 by 1. So, so my first year in college,
- 47:59we didn't even go to Nationals my second year.
- 48:02I took a chance. Then we got like, second in the
- 48:04for ball. One fourth in the or fourth, or
- 48:07fifth in the 4x4. I never been never been to a
- 48:11junior college, national debt, and so was in Hutchinson Kansas
- 48:15at the time. Yeah, bitch.
- 48:17Blew back up on me. And so more kids, more kids
- 48:21can't let what I mean? I had no idea about recruit.
- 48:23I never decided to be a coach. All right.
- 48:26So true. Right, right?
- 48:27Right. And then been an HBCU College,
- 48:30we didn't have a budget to go with group.
- 48:33Maybe I could go talk to the local kid at the local track
- 48:35meet, but I ended up just taking what I had.
- 48:39I literally took. Yeah, it was like four kids from
- 48:43maybe three or four kids from Mark's that one kid from
- 48:45somewhere else and I just made them deck, made the we train to.
- 48:51We got good enough to get second at junior college national and
- 48:55so from there, I just started believe in you know, like, you
- 48:58know that I took another chain like two years later took a
- 49:01group of fresh snow, The Freshman a year.
- 49:03Then I, you know, the next year, I took over the next year, we
- 49:05went back. I think we got like feel and
- 49:08then the next year I had another team that would really good and
- 49:11God freshman. And so, I kind of got this thing
- 49:13in my mind. Like to let me get High School
- 49:15freshman and, and those people that did nobody warn give me the
- 49:1911 second guy, you know, give me the, give me the guy.
- 49:21That ran 50 point, and let me, let me train them, you know, and
- 49:25give him everything I have. And that's what development came
- 49:28in and stuff like that. And it was really fun because
- 49:31you get, if you just believe you could Anything.
- 49:34You know it. So I just believe didn't we just
- 49:37went and did it Cedric? You're a weird guy.
- 49:41Now let me explain that so you don't get mad at everybody
- 49:43listening right now is like, oh my God.
- 49:46Here's what I mean. You know, I talked to, you know,
- 49:48I've coached for 10 years and then I've been here.
- 49:50Gil nailed going on my 15th year.
- 49:52So yeah, this is all I do. I talk to coaches around the
- 49:55country mainly college, but you know, high school and Etc, you
- 50:00know, most coach most coaches there, Ego.
- 50:03And by the way, guilty as charged I'm this guy a lot of
- 50:08coaches. The ego is well, I want to get
- 50:10to the University of Florida, the University of Arkansas
- 50:14because I want to work with 10 flat.
- 50:16Kids. 10 one I want to recruit the tend to kid out of high
- 50:19school you know messing around with those 11 flats and things
- 50:24like that. You're describing the almost
- 50:29exact opposite. You seem to be challenged by oh
- 50:31no, I want that. And second kit so I can work
- 50:35with them and see if they can become a 9:50 flat kid.
- 50:39Yeah, yeah. So you know a lot about Trey a
- 50:45lot of times you just kind of my observation, a lot of time like
- 50:49Tyson Gay was 10-5 out of high school.
- 50:51He wouldn't hurt anyone. It was kid that ran faster than
- 50:54my high school. So a lot of times when you got a
- 50:57kid that ran fast dead early, they end up kind of doing, you
- 51:01know, this type of deal. Where is the kid?
- 51:04That didn't know anything. They just did not know.
- 51:06That monster did not know how to do this.
- 51:08They do know how to run. Run, they're not a breed they
- 51:10did not to put their feet in the ground.
- 51:12If you could teach them that they seem to do this, you know
- 51:16how you didn't live. You know, we'll let me teach you
- 51:18how to live your looking like a football player.
- 51:20Let's lift explosively not heavy, you know, all the
- 51:24different things. So I think you know at least for
- 51:26me and what works for me is I can take 11 second kid that has
- 51:30potential. Oh man you know I said is if you
- 51:34run ugly if I fixed it. Now, what happens, you know, owe
- 51:38you Just breathing issue if I fixed it now.
- 51:41Where are you? And so it wasn't so much to me
- 51:44looking for the 11 second kid as opposed to.
- 51:46Hey, do you love running track? I love running tracks.
- 51:49So let me help you and let's let's both do this.
- 51:53So you know more or less. You know you love doing this as
- 51:57long as you. Okay with me killing you and
- 52:01bring you back to life whatever you know, you know, let's do it.
- 52:08But you quit and where you going to be upset and mad at me and
- 52:16that's okay. You should have a coach that
- 52:18challenge you like it. You should have a coasters
- 52:21always on your butt about school, things like that.
- 52:24So my conversation was more or less.
- 52:26Not what I could do for you. But it was like, hey, let me
- 52:29tell you about life and let me tell you what this life is going
- 52:32to look. Like if you want to pursue this
- 52:34dream and they were there where I will get that commitment or
- 52:37they would get their commitment to The cell phone like you don't
- 52:39even need to run fast for me, this is for you.
- 52:42But I just want to tell you the challenges that it's going to
- 52:44take to get there. And so it just ended up being,
- 52:48you know, I think I had a kid that, you know, never ran 21,
- 52:52you know, about 22 something and I coach Eric Jenkins.
- 52:56He was at Western Kentucky at the time and I guess for the now
- 53:032090, his his freshman year and you got to think we 22, cycle
- 53:09Kid, the last meet we had, I think, was at Mississippi State
- 53:13Mississippi, not Mississippi State.
- 53:15I'm sorry, mr. Stay with wholesome that time.
- 53:17Oh, miss was hosting me or whatever.
- 53:19There was hosting me and his last regular season meeting when
- 53:2224.93 whatever. Now, I mean, we were both
- 53:26ecstatic. We run around the track were
- 53:27happy and everything like that. Well, that type of success and
- 53:31confidence, what is what built me and say.
- 53:34Hey, we can do more, we can do more and so having the kids to
- 53:37never run, And any arrests are have to get down to 21 and then
- 53:42dropped 20 points. What's going to point?
- 53:44Ninety is nothing these days. I mean just not but it was big
- 53:47for us it was big for him and and so it was just such a great
- 53:52deal for me. And so I know that, you know, if
- 53:55you put your mind to our food you can get there.
- 53:58So and I'm not saying I'm a great coach but I still had, you
- 54:01know, think of it. You know, tranquillus of code,
- 54:03green corn, into a Brahmin porn in me.
- 54:06So you got all those stuff then all of the limp.
- 54:08Has everything like that. So I think I kind of maybe, you
- 54:11know, a lot of their greatness blade into me and it just
- 54:15allowed me to be character building with the kids and then,
- 54:18you know, to run. It took care of yourself.
- 54:20It sounds like, you know, the coaches are very the wide thing
- 54:26to Define, right? You know, the X's and O's as it
- 54:29relates to track, that's more trainer esque, right?
- 54:33Is, you know, the Reps to fly 30s the, you know, the building
- 54:36out the prescription for the workout.
- 54:39Coach involves all these other things and whether you're a
- 54:43professional level College High School, you know, this stuff
- 54:48does not own your payroll check. Yeah, right.
- 54:51Yeah, that's good way of putting it?
- 54:54Yeah, cuz I hear you talking about.
- 54:56When you go looking for kid, you're not looking.
- 54:59You're number one, characteristic is not 0.
- 55:02Is he or she talents at its do they have passion, when, when
- 55:06things get bad, do they have perseverance?
- 55:08It's maybe humility. We haven't said that word, but
- 55:12the description you're giving is like, oh, okay.
- 55:14Well, I'm not doing so good today, but I better suck it up
- 55:17and get after it and coaches yelling at me.
- 55:19I can either say, woe is me, coaches, mad?
- 55:22Or I can say, all right, he's doing it because he loves me and
- 55:25wants me to get better. That's good coach.
- 55:29And I you know, I never thought about the word humility, but I
- 55:34think that, you know, Nana's you say it and literally, that's
- 55:38what I've been coaching with maybe 12 years.
- 55:40I never thought that think of it that way, but you got to think,
- 55:43you know, your coach and we're actually going man, a young lady
- 55:46to do something to push their body.
- 55:49You know, 90% every day. You got to have some humility to
- 55:54let someone wish you to that point you know, on a date.
- 55:57Basis you know you not in season so you probably are actually six
- 56:01days a week. What are doing something?
- 56:03Some type of training plus recovery six days a week.
- 56:07Well that's someone pushing you better have some type of ability
- 56:10to do it and so I mean it's interesting that you said that I
- 56:13never heard it that way. But yeah, I guess though, I
- 56:16guess you do need her music. Well it came to me because first
- 56:19of all, I think humility and humbleness is, you know,
- 56:22critical characteristic for us as adults in life for, in our In
- 56:27our personal life, Etc. But honestly, I really was
- 56:30thinking about it with you as you're telling your story of
- 56:32going to Arkansas and walking on that that in itself is a humble,
- 56:36you know, having humility Act Right.
- 56:39Your ego could have said I'm going to go to I won't name
- 56:44School whatever you. I'm going to go to someplace
- 56:46where I'm going to be one of the best right off the bat and we've
- 56:49all you know, there's coaches listening right now they have
- 56:51recruited kids that said, wait a minute, I'm going to be your
- 56:53your fifth best quarter mile. ER I don't want to There because
- 56:57they don't have the humility to say.
- 56:59Okay. Well, if we work together coach,
- 57:01I'll become your best quarter mile, ER, right?
- 57:04And there's other places that there's other kids, and these
- 57:06are kind of the typically. These are the stories you would
- 57:09hear of the kids that make it big.
- 57:11They were like, yeah, I'm pretty good.
- 57:12I got talent. But, you know what?
- 57:14I wanted to go to a place, Baylor University is a great
- 57:17example of quarter mile or you, right?
- 57:19They got so many quarters, they had quarter milers.
- 57:21That would have been full rides at 99% of other schools and they
- 57:25took nothing because they're like, oh yeah, but I want to
- 57:27make that 33 flat team, like, and no way I'm gonna make it as
- 57:30if I'm their training with other 44s and Michael Johnson and
- 57:35Jeremy Warner, and Michael forming.
- 57:37Yeah, that could be a list right there, just quarter milers from
- 57:40from Baylor. But so yeah, just that humility
- 57:42and humbleness like okay, you know what, I, what is the
- 57:46statement? Act like number one, but train
- 57:50like number two. Is that something like that?
- 57:52That's kind of the thought. Like okay, yeah, I want to be
- 57:54number one. Well, then I better.
- 57:56I better act like I'm Number Two that I'm always chasing somebody
- 57:59which you know it's great for track and field.
- 58:02Yeah and I think you actually point out something so I call it
- 58:06a killer attitude and I was explaining my parents live.
- 58:10What I'm calling a kid a killer is not you know in that in that
- 58:13aspect is it I need you to so so you know I'm Archive Beth but we
- 58:20were running against the University of Arkansas and all
- 58:22of, you know, change that are Baptists and so you can't be
- 58:26scared. You cannot, you know, you just
- 58:28can't, we got the train, you got to go hard and we don't have the
- 58:31recovery room. We don't have the ice.
- 58:33You know room, we don't have trainers, you know, I've never
- 58:36had a trainer a day in my life with, you know, in our club
- 58:38after whatever, like we're having to do everything.
- 58:41So we got to work twice as hard. So you still gotta have a I'm
- 58:46supposed to be here, attitude. Humble, but I can do it.
- 58:51So what deserve it? The kind of develop that much.
- 58:55And I think I probably talk a lot more about the mindset and
- 58:58character and everything else that I do actually running the
- 59:00stuff. But once I get that, I can do
- 59:02attitude once when we literally train at 1 p.m. in the daytime,
- 59:06for 1 p.m. the like, you know, 3:30 4:00 who trained in the
- 59:10hottest part of the day and Little Rock Arkansas for.
- 59:13But if I can feel it in here to you, you know, you know if you
- 59:16get back it back and push you in.
- 59:18And grinded into you, when we get to The Big Meet Your Home,
- 59:23you know, it's just they always say they're going to breathe the
- 59:26same air you breathe. They're going to bleed the same
- 59:28way you bleed. You want to get tired of going
- 59:30to get tired to stay awake, and their line is the same distance
- 59:34as the other line, you know, whatever, you know.
- 59:37So what do you mean Lange, one? You can beat somebody.
- 59:39Like, I had a kid beat, you know, a kid.
- 59:41I don't like, you know, beat some of the big schools out of
- 59:43like, what I've been in late night or line 8, you know.
- 59:46It doesn't matter. You just got to run your race
- 59:50and you got to train everyday, like we're trying to beat them,
- 59:52you know, you know. And so this kind of attitude
- 59:54that I have with them. It's not, you know, this little
- 59:58small school so I should probably be like, in the slow
- 1:00:01heat, no put that key. I used to, you know what, you
- 1:00:03know that I get on Direct Athletics and put my name on and
- 1:00:07putting his name up there and then I run it, you know?
- 1:00:11And so, I don't be a bit but I'm like, we running with them, you
- 1:00:16know, we get busted, we get busted.
- 1:00:17But if not, you know, Yo, we showed up who we are, so I get
- 1:00:21it now. You know who it is?
- 1:00:22I want the fast even today. I called coaches blade.
- 1:00:26Listen, I'm coming to your me, I win the last Heat The Bad Seed
- 1:00:31or you know, what are we in? You know, they don't like nah,
- 1:00:34I'm good, I'm good. Great.
- 1:00:57They had to host a great meat, but Rose College in the colleges
- 1:01:01that their hosts are not listening, Sprint Heaven.
- 1:01:04Okay. But it's a great, great meat.
- 1:01:06I want to make sure to make that clear, well, we went there and
- 1:01:10dominate what that built the confidence up and at the time we
- 1:01:14would always I kind of have this sense scared so it didn't really
- 1:01:17change. We will go Oh, miss the next
- 1:01:20year, the next meet. And so, by us going there doing
- 1:01:23everything we did their winning Offspring spaces in there for
- 1:01:26about 120. 120 forward. 100 200 million for about, for the next
- 1:01:30step was to go to Ole Miss and run.
- 1:01:32Their will who would get maybe two or three SEC schools, but a
- 1:01:35bunch of kind of all kinds of schools around the same level
- 1:01:39and then we will get there and compete.
- 1:01:41That's all we needed to do is compete or whatever to help us
- 1:01:44out there. We may go to a little smaller me
- 1:01:46or whatever then we'll go back to the bigamy.
- 1:01:48Together. So so I say that I want to make
- 1:01:52it look like we just kind of ran the table, that's not the case.
- 1:01:55I was okay with losing when I was actually getting better.
- 1:01:59I caught it really winning, you know, we can lose and run
- 1:02:02faster. Rightly we asked one, you ran
- 1:02:07fast, we PR that type of Deal or you actually did the rate plan.
- 1:02:11Like, I told you to, you know, you I said, hey, you know, let's
- 1:02:14run the 400 but I need you to make sure you come out the first
- 1:02:1715. Let's go.
- 1:02:18Scooter has come to our first dose of 20, 19.
- 1:02:21You know, you actually ran 20 19 through the deuce.
- 1:02:24Good job. We did it.
- 1:02:25Well, I kind of still die my last 50.
- 1:02:27Well now we know what we need to work on, right?
- 1:02:30Executed the race, the way I need you to run and so now we
- 1:02:33know hey, we're going to do some heels, you know, we're going to
- 1:02:36do some 350 heels and so that last 50, you know, you know, you
- 1:02:40know, you run flat but the last 50 run up a hill.
- 1:02:42I'm going to work on just your finish and I called my finishing
- 1:02:45Grace drill, you know, stuff like that, I would counter, you
- 1:02:48know, Yeah, you do. I execute, you know what the
- 1:02:52Kotex you to do have you have you always been such a planner.
- 1:02:57I don't know if you recognize that in yourself, but you're
- 1:02:59just you seem to always have a plan.
- 1:03:02At least, least always seemed to have a plan that you're
- 1:03:04executing towards. Well, after this, a big goal
- 1:03:08mind. And I guess I would say, I don't
- 1:03:10know that I playing it because I could get up today, you know,
- 1:03:14and plan on let's say, you know, using those speeds princely And
- 1:03:19so, I will say to them going to use them and you know, I don't
- 1:03:24know, maybe they may be struggling.
- 1:03:25I'm like, well, we're going to use the sleds on the hill now
- 1:03:29you still. So so I think I'm a kind of have
- 1:03:32a general idea what I want to do, but I don't know that I'm a
- 1:03:35planner because I always see, well, this is the goal, this
- 1:03:40didn't work out today, so let's do this.
- 1:03:42And so, you know, you know, I mean, kind of speak up like
- 1:03:46those layers and so I'll do different things.
- 1:03:48Things work well. Well, I'm a plan on doing 30
- 1:03:52meter starts with him, you know, with slaves.
- 1:03:55But I hamstrings is dying cool. We still going to use the
- 1:03:58slaves, but we're going to put a 45 on and check all the way up
- 1:04:01with 40 files on their hook, them up.
- 1:04:03We're going to do backwards backwards wrong.
- 1:04:05So we can kind of loosen up those hamstrings.
- 1:04:07So I so I guess playing it. I know coaches who like today
- 1:04:12it's on paper. You stick to it me.
- 1:04:14I'm more like how do y'all feel today?
- 1:04:17We heard. There's planning and then
- 1:04:20there's rigid planning and I agree.
- 1:04:24I do sometimes he coaches who think that you know they wrote
- 1:04:27down the workout. They think it was you know it's
- 1:04:29the Ten Commandments like this ain't written in stone man and
- 1:04:33then there's planning having a, you know, a vision of where you
- 1:04:36want to go, whether it's that day at practice or my career or
- 1:04:39my schedule of meat that I'm going to and realizing that,
- 1:04:44okay? I still have to be flexible
- 1:04:45because you know the world is still the world.
- 1:04:47It could rain one day. Hamstring for tree?
- 1:04:50Yeah, yeah, exactly, absolutely. So, talk to me outside of
- 1:04:55Arkansas, Baptist, you've done or are doing some, like a, you
- 1:05:00and usatf Club coaching as well. Okay, so, so I got in the
- 1:05:04coaching. I got to kind of take you back a
- 1:05:07little bit me too. So I got into coaching because I
- 1:05:11was a triangular, okay, and I love working with kids.
- 1:05:15So I worked at a place called. Do you want Sports train?
- 1:05:18Hmm, around 2008, 2009 without would work, the kids and things
- 1:05:23like that. And then later on 2009 course,
- 1:05:25fish here hired me to be the head coach Dark Side, Baptist
- 1:05:28College, but I just love teaching speed is for I ended up
- 1:05:32working, like a youth group, like, think of maybe 5 to 12 or
- 1:05:357 to 12, or something like that. So, you got to think those kids
- 1:05:39are not developed at all, right? Or whatever.
- 1:05:41So, I literally cut my teeth on non-athletes, like a party kids.
- 1:05:47What? But it was a step above the
- 1:05:50yeah. Basically, I did it literally
- 1:05:53took stuff that I have from the University of Arkansas and I
- 1:05:56taught myself how to break it down to teach those kids stuff.
- 1:06:00So, I want to say t: make sure you that were so I learn how to
- 1:06:03teach them, how to do this, a skilled, all of different
- 1:06:09things. And so, then our trainer at D1
- 1:06:13Sports training, I ran into all the different athletes.
- 1:06:15I even had a couple special needs kids Couple kids, I, you
- 1:06:19know, I would get young ladies. Like, you know, my girls would
- 1:06:22have bunch of HCL and cl, you know injuries.
- 1:06:25And I was just trying to named Josh Jocelyn's, what you kind of
- 1:06:28talked me coming. Hey girls have this issue and
- 1:06:31this issue it bands and so it made me think well, how can I
- 1:06:35strengthened if I cannot do so? So my outside life began to as a
- 1:06:39trainer like well how can I do injury prevention.
- 1:06:42And so a lot of drills you see now is really people like oh
- 1:06:45that's the speed drill. Well it's really Ah, from injury
- 1:06:49prevention. I had a bunch of young ladies
- 1:06:51that would have in CL and HL issue.
- 1:06:53I had a bunch of guys that would have a hamstring issue.
- 1:06:56And so I have to come up with different drills and things like
- 1:06:59that. So my coaching from my training
- 1:07:02from D1 developed me into a, just a, or help me become a
- 1:07:07developmental trainer and development coach.
- 1:07:10And so, from that whatever, I grew, of course, I naturally
- 1:07:14grew a track group in, so I ended up with a lot of kids.
- 1:07:18I mean just just no knowledge whatsoever you know which how we
- 1:07:21grew up probably you know not knowing how to do a skip not
- 1:07:24right right and it and I ended up going a track group or track
- 1:07:28following that D1. Well well it got big.
- 1:07:32I mean it just I don't know how to say it but it got you know
- 1:07:35ended up with maybe like five kids.
- 1:07:37So you know one day I think I had like 25 kids and known as
- 1:07:4160-yard field and I'm taking up the entire field.
- 1:07:44You know 60-yard field we run parachutes down, I'm doing
- 1:07:47everything I can Aunt where I have literally exhausted, you
- 1:07:51know, all of my running, you know drill and it made me be
- 1:07:54creative but it's just no more room in there or whatever.
- 1:07:57So I would move that group out and eventually you know new
- 1:08:00ones, great place. I'm glad that the Army got me on
- 1:08:02my feet, different things like there, but I ended up starting
- 1:08:06my own training, CCV training in 2005.
- 1:08:09So I was already kind of doing a little bit of training outside
- 1:08:12of D1. Probably from about twenty
- 1:08:15twelve. I'm get to know time blank.
- 1:08:17My kid needs help. And they couldn't afford to go
- 1:08:20to D1, D1 of training, at the time, how to, you know, how to
- 1:08:23price range in. So if you couldn't afford to get
- 1:08:26in there, do this kid is really good.
- 1:08:29I just don't want to, you know, you caught in between.
- 1:08:32So I ended up kind of like let me just meet you on the Sunday
- 1:08:34after church or something like that.
- 1:08:36And so they got big to and so between those two I ended up
- 1:08:41leaving D1, it was kind of like a fake thing.
- 1:08:43I mean, it was It was kind of scared you leaving the job or
- 1:08:46whatever doing this leaving. Leti.
- 1:08:50Yeah, so at the time I would have Arkansas Baptist.
- 1:08:54I would literally go to school. Go to campus in the morning.
- 1:08:58Kind of do coaching stuff, or whatever, go to practice.
- 1:09:01And then, or, you know, maybe I may even go to D1, if I had a
- 1:09:04class in the morning, but then I will stop, do coaching stuff.
- 1:09:08Do work out for with my with my Arkansas, Baptist kids from like
- 1:09:12lunch all the way to like 3:30. And then I will have to like
- 1:09:16literally run across town, get to be.
- 1:09:18Wanted in our coach, a D1 from like, for to 8:30, 9:00,
- 1:09:23whatever the case was and those my everyday lifestyle, or
- 1:09:25whatever, that did kind of take a toll on my family, my wife and
- 1:09:30things like this. So at some point in time I had
- 1:09:32to, you know, you know, it's kind would be so driven that you
- 1:09:36kind of forget the personal life and in the journey.
- 1:09:41And I hate cut it off the home, you know, you you this kid, you
- 1:09:46know, you know, they're going to be fine.
- 1:09:48Fine. But is your wife going to be
- 1:09:50there when you get there? So I did I had to kind of, get
- 1:09:52through that Journey where I'm like, okay, you know what, let's
- 1:09:55be wise and of course I had good counselor.
- 1:09:57I have people like old green and stuff like that.
- 1:10:00So, doing all the trying time, for whatever it was like, hey,
- 1:10:03you need to do these young man, you need to do this.
- 1:10:04So I had to have some type of accountability in my life.
- 1:10:07I got a assistant coach, Barry Brown.
- 1:10:10You've been with me since I think 2011 and then another coke
- 1:10:14coke booze. Dirty was convincing is called,
- 1:10:16so you probably met him through the gate.
- 1:10:18Unranked. But but those are older men that
- 1:10:22are married and they kind of spoke a little bit into my life
- 1:10:24and they helped me out, which helped me kind of divided and
- 1:10:28cut it off because, you know, like me and you, we could
- 1:10:31probably go home and watch more track stuff whatever.
- 1:10:35So, so, so, it was so him bread in it into me, but I kind of,
- 1:10:39you know, I'm talking, like I got it, you know, all worked
- 1:10:42out, but doing the time and that was what I was waiting for you.
- 1:10:45To give us the secrets, man. Come on.
- 1:10:47You got it all. I worked out to where I could
- 1:10:51divide it up and things like that at one point in time would
- 1:10:59be, you know, Arkansas Baptist. Do you want Sports training
- 1:11:03there, maybe a little bit of training on the side around to
- 1:11:072015, it was kind of like and I got a, you know, you know, I got
- 1:11:10to do something different and so God kind of led me.
- 1:11:13Hey starts a business. I have a couple people in there
- 1:11:16which I just found my train. It was really The last mode of
- 1:11:19transition than what I thought it would be as far as financing
- 1:11:22things. Like I had a couple of pants
- 1:11:24that's why I say characters everything.
- 1:11:26I had a couple of paints that was like look we're not even
- 1:11:29going to make training but here's $500, let me get you
- 1:11:32started for the next month. You know.
- 1:11:34I had people like whirring. Wow.
- 1:11:36Yes, I had. I got a, I got a one young man.
- 1:11:41Who is a young, man, but he's no older gentleman him and his
- 1:11:44family. They sponsor it was.
- 1:11:45I'll tell you about in a little bit.
- 1:11:46Literally sponsored me. And the program and the school.
- 1:11:50So very sure I'm not missing, great, people, black white,
- 1:11:54whoever some great people. But then once I got started, it
- 1:11:59just began to grow. You know, I've had some great
- 1:12:02friends of the, hey, you got to do this because when I first
- 1:12:04started, I was like, you know, I don't care if you can't pay, um,
- 1:12:10you know, just come on cuz I don't want you to get.
- 1:12:12You got to think I came from a straight life and so I didn't
- 1:12:14want to get my young people caught up into there.
- 1:12:17And so what I would do is I would try to save everybody but
- 1:12:20I have some kind of people like, hey, you got to have a cut-off
- 1:12:22and and I found developed a balance it ad and it's like,
- 1:12:25hey, you got a charge this price in order for you to make money,
- 1:12:28because when she make money, you could save people which I had to
- 1:12:32get that concept or whatever. So that's, I'm finally like,
- 1:12:35okay well, you know once I actually got my price has said
- 1:12:38and things like that which is, you know, kind of get into the
- 1:12:40business side of it. But it actually helped me out,
- 1:12:43you know, my family out of things like that almost grass
- 1:12:46and it actually became a blessing listen because you got
- 1:12:49to think my working for a company like D1.
- 1:12:52Well, I'm making the company out of money and I love D1.
- 1:12:55And I mean, it's be great to help me out.
- 1:12:57But, you know, just like a hundred thousand dollar
- 1:12:59difference, you know, you know, by stepping out on your own and
- 1:13:03doing it, not have no red calls from all over.
- 1:13:05As I say, yeah. You talk about the overhead.
- 1:13:07They had that they have a building and Brandon you're
- 1:13:09right. Yeah.
- 1:13:10You're thinking right though, I didn't have to do.
- 1:13:17I'm not Again I think I was just good at what I did really good
- 1:13:21at what I did and I cared enough about what I did everybody
- 1:13:25really, you know, you know, you know, I know my mic is the guy
- 1:13:29you need to go to. It was kind of one of those
- 1:13:30things. So I had a lot of people sending
- 1:13:33me people, right? Whatever.
- 1:13:35Even when I was, when I left, he won people from Duomo, still
- 1:13:38sending me people whatever. So that kind of grew up with was
- 1:13:41the blessing. So I was able to kind of
- 1:13:44simulate, you got to think I started doing this in 2008-2009.
- 1:13:48I was able to kind of settle my stuff down around 2, 2013.
- 1:13:51I really am a lot of steps and I saw bathroom but I still dealing
- 1:13:55with all the challenges and stresses of job and then all the
- 1:13:58kids and things like that. So by 2015, I started CC be
- 1:14:01training, you know? Like I say knows that clientele
- 1:14:06mainly was trapped but I had, you know, I had a I had a, you
- 1:14:09know, a young lady with a ACL and she literally came in and
- 1:14:14they see got released or whatever you know I got it back
- 1:14:18on. You know, and she's real sweet
- 1:14:19girl. Appearances, awesome.
- 1:14:21I love the fact that they gave me an opportunity to work with
- 1:14:23her. You know, we started out doing
- 1:14:25some small stuff, I got to jump it over box like you literally
- 1:14:29got this girl going there. So people kind of heard about
- 1:14:33that. And so you know, and I just
- 1:14:34believed in the young let her listen you don't you're not an
- 1:14:37ACL tear your not that you know you're better than that, we can
- 1:14:40recover right? You know, I think I could think
- 1:14:42about stores, you know like all kind of athlete that overcame.
- 1:14:46And so what ended up happening is course.
- 1:14:48She brought more softball. So, my, you know, I think I had
- 1:14:50at one point in time. I had one saw Parker that we
- 1:14:53ended up going like the University of Tulsa, something
- 1:14:55from there. I ended up with, like 12 or 13,
- 1:14:58softball girl. And then, I had a coat came in,
- 1:15:01and he kind of watched me one time and he brought his
- 1:15:04basketball girls. And so, I ended up, you know,
- 1:15:06you know. And so that kind of expand, of
- 1:15:09course, I would always have football player because
- 1:15:12everybody wants to fix their 40-yard dash, but I don't like
- 1:15:18More today and until like, you know, just a lot on the sofa
- 1:15:34progressed from 2015 and things are going pretty good to 2017.
- 1:15:39And I've grown, you know, I've got an established at this time
- 1:15:43in between that I would buy any house.
- 1:15:46So, I'm leaving D1, I'm buying a house.
- 1:15:48House. Well, I was coaching and this
- 1:15:52one man, you know? If and I won't name you probably
- 1:15:54don't want anybody to notice whatever.
- 1:15:57But he was hey do you need anything?
- 1:15:59But you know humbled and didn't want to say anything now you
- 1:16:02know, and I mentioned I mentioned to him that I was
- 1:16:06trying to do some things that are so bad for you and let's
- 1:16:09see. I know he gave me a card to say
- 1:16:11it's 85 thousand dollars on here and so, I mean this this is how
- 1:16:15hey I'm sorry Cedric obviously The Bluetooth speakers and
- 1:16:19stuff, it must have disconnected because it sounded like you said
- 1:16:2485,000 he's been he's been he gave me a and I had no idea what
- 1:16:31to do. It was the first time I seen a
- 1:16:33black car and it's called an American Express, he was kind of
- 1:16:36a mix, you know, I had no idea what they make scar mail away.
- 1:16:39So he sponsored that team of whatever and so that all the
- 1:16:44equipment every listen. So this this my mind says Let me
- 1:16:48just get your understanding Mikey with me.
- 1:16:52Yeah I can hear you keep going. Okay.
- 1:16:54Okay, so I didn't know that he would help me out again.
- 1:17:00I bought a quid meant to last like the next six years.
- 1:17:05Whatever. So I ended up spending.
- 1:17:07You got to think I'm a small team.
- 1:17:09I have maybe 20 25, but I bought equipment, I got smart with it,
- 1:17:13you know, I at the time I met a god, a rep from Mikey, but I met
- 1:17:19a couple other people and so I was like, hey, what can I get?
- 1:17:24I mean, I want to be able to get, you know, 300 t-shirts,
- 1:17:28this minute since I do. I mean, I got really smart but I
- 1:17:31really can't believe it man. And he did that.
- 1:17:34He turns around, he found out. I was buying a house, he put
- 1:17:37the, put the pavement down for the house.
- 1:17:39So I mean, and that was well over, you know, eight thousand
- 1:17:42dollars or whatever, you know. So I was blessed with people
- 1:17:47that They came in and you know, and I'm telling you this on the
- 1:17:51back half of it, there were more, you know.
- 1:17:54I was like man what I what I got to do to earn this, you know,
- 1:17:58but he just seeing what I was doing now.
- 1:18:00I know this now it's like, you know, like I see what you've
- 1:18:04done for my kids, I see what you're doing for the other kids
- 1:18:07or whatever. And you know, when you when you,
- 1:18:11when you bless, you want to give to people who are who are doing
- 1:18:14stuff. And so I'm saying that now, but
- 1:18:15I didn't know it at the time. Anyway.
- 1:18:17So he Me, he dies and things. I had a couple other parents to
- 1:18:20do something significant like that and so it helped me helped
- 1:18:26the other. So and I got to a point where I
- 1:18:28feel like he'll understand, you know, this doctor told me a long
- 1:18:31time ago, said me, you got to take care of this part and then
- 1:18:34you can tell you save, everybody was kind of one of those things
- 1:18:36where, you know, if you're drowning and they're drowning
- 1:18:39and you're trying to say them but you're not saving yourself
- 1:18:42how can you know, save anybody else.
- 1:18:44So once I figured that out and with I live by that concept now
- 1:18:47are you telling my God? Young people like listen I just
- 1:18:49need you to take care of this then we can go back and take
- 1:18:52care of that and so now that's what helps ECB trying to get off
- 1:18:56the ground. It also helped Parks, I baptize.
- 1:18:58You got to think we're a small HBCU so we didn't have the
- 1:19:01funding and so and then I didn't recruit but we ended up when
- 1:19:05you're good and cost money or whatever, would you would, you
- 1:19:08probably understand that. And so we got really good but it
- 1:19:11costs money to go to Nashville or you know, we, you know, now
- 1:19:15we can no longer compete at the local meat.
- 1:19:17We got To the universe starts August and hotel.
- 1:19:20We got to go down in Louisiana like a clean.
- 1:19:23Once you get the kids that good, they deserve more, you know, you
- 1:19:26know, you can't just have them running, you know, we're all
- 1:19:30running 10 lows and everybody at this meat is running 10th
- 1:19:33serving it up, right, right. It's not right by the kids and
- 1:19:36so it understood that that was going to be a cost to being good
- 1:19:42or whatever. I'm not bragging.
- 1:19:43Anything like Timber want some cat good?
- 1:19:45I like okay there's the cost there plus now you got I have
- 1:19:48better spikes better, this better so on and so you know I
- 1:19:52think I may have and no not towards any company but after a
- 1:19:56while you realize like just company here, spikes or whatever
- 1:20:01fit this group of kids but they don't fit this group of kids.
- 1:20:04So I didn't have any Allegiance. I just like needed to write
- 1:20:08spikes for the right kids. So we were literally have to go
- 1:20:10and get New Balance because these spikes fit a certain way
- 1:20:13that I like to go. Maybe do a deed has another
- 1:20:15time. So what you, cause you to Life
- 1:20:18is like, why can't you just do these Nikes B OD, right?
- 1:20:21Well, that's Spike, literally hurts their foot.
- 1:20:24I need a different plate and so it's not that, you know, not the
- 1:20:27kind of throws, you know, company names out there, but but
- 1:20:30but I just need a different equipment.
- 1:20:32Once you know, once I got into my ladies are whatever we needed
- 1:20:36different equipment. So I would have to get maybe
- 1:20:41which, you know, at a big school they just have people come out,
- 1:20:45you know, whoever, you know, unarmed, whatever.
- 1:20:47But I I got to make sure that these girls have on the right
- 1:20:51tank tops. The right, this, the fit.
- 1:20:54And so, you know, I would eventually got the pumpkin sigh.
- 1:20:57Hey, I need to go get these. I need to go get these and so
- 1:21:00people will step up and sponsor me in those areas whatever.
- 1:21:03Talking get the proper because it's you know, you can run fast
- 1:21:06but not how to proper equipment on it.
- 1:21:07I think I've been to meet where people are running and girls are
- 1:21:10trying to pull Fools pranks. Just went up like man that's so
- 1:21:14disrespectful. That is so you know.
- 1:21:16So so not right by their kids. And our in our equipment is
- 1:21:20malfunctioning. Well I mean I guess it's the
- 1:21:22best way I can kind of see it so I hate it you know I never
- 1:21:25wanted to have a kid running from me feeling that type of way
- 1:21:29right? But I was able to reach out and
- 1:21:31get some people and they are. I mean into this day you know
- 1:21:35people still you know kind of pour into the school and so when
- 1:21:39I make sure you dissolve them properly write a check don't
- 1:21:41write a check to me don't let me check the CCTV training.
- 1:21:44I just checked Arkansas, Baptist College and then I go and go to
- 1:21:47the bid. His office and and, and, and get
- 1:21:50it from damn well, you know, and I'll spend it out their way.
- 1:21:53But I've had people not even tax write-off, but he did you know
- 1:21:58that that, you know because normally, you know, you kind of,
- 1:22:00you know, I guess no business like, you want to text so that
- 1:22:05kind of got me into CC, be training which day and I ended
- 1:22:09up starting a club. And so I had I was originally
- 1:22:12coaching, that's our programming and I'll let me know you're good
- 1:22:15man, I love it. The I was training kids, you
- 1:22:20know from from 2014 and maybe 2016 and what happened, you
- 1:22:26know, those kids will be on other teams and I would get into
- 1:22:30a polar, we will run into conflict.
- 1:22:33You know, you know, this kid would be really fast.
- 1:22:35I would do all this work and then the coach like whoa, you
- 1:22:37know, I don't have any more positions.
- 1:22:39I'm gonna put you in 800 like to we spent all this week working
- 1:22:42on the 100 and the 200 and you're trying to minute and I
- 1:22:45course you always teach my kids. Just not your place to argue
- 1:22:49with the coke. You know, you have a
- 1:22:51conversation with your parents or with me and let me speak to
- 1:22:54the coach. I never sending it to be
- 1:22:56disrespectful or anything like that.
- 1:22:58He's, I don't think it's right. I think everybody has their
- 1:23:00place now you can actually Force the coach a question, but you
- 1:23:03don't go any question to come callenge them, right?
- 1:23:06Right. And so always, you know, where I
- 1:23:10ran into, make me some Egos, and little bit of, and I was by
- 1:23:14myself as a supplemental training.
- 1:23:16I always thought that I was Subcommittee.
- 1:23:19You know so you don't know block starts I'm kind of good at
- 1:23:22blocks Farms. Let me work on your kids block
- 1:23:24starts and I send them back to you but it became you know at
- 1:23:28least locally you know like you're taking my kids or
- 1:23:31something like that. And so in 2017 which I hated, I
- 1:23:36just threw. Why can't we just work together
- 1:23:37and feel. So in 2016 from parents,
- 1:23:43approached me about starting a club and so the kids was already
- 1:23:46kind of running with Shmi unattached.
- 1:23:50I ended up starting to Club. I don't know why I did.
- 1:24:18He went 100, we outdoor in the USA.
- 1:24:22In Kansas, we went one the 101, 400, and the 200 all in that.
- 1:24:28Wow, if they meet then we turned around and went to a, you would,
- 1:24:32you know, note that all coaches never run, six Championship
- 1:24:36races lesson learned. If they called Bruce and couple
- 1:25:19of people helping the good but I like the teats and if I can't
- 1:25:23really focus on every ride so it's not on the lead on the
- 1:25:27best, just one of those things like I can't give you a kid, the
- 1:25:30best of the best training and so even to make my team, you had to
- 1:25:34sign of a cc be trying was there two separate entities.
- 1:25:37But if I could train you you could probably make my team.
- 1:25:42What have I don't want? You know, I know how to have
- 1:25:44some people do. They wait till the summer going
- 1:25:47to get on the chair? Team and I'm such a potent
- 1:25:50trainer. I'm like, I want to fix stuff,
- 1:25:52but I can't fix you doing the season.
- 1:25:54It's right way. And so, you know, I kind of knew
- 1:25:58like, now we need to train. And then if you're good enough
- 1:26:00to get on my team and you can find out because I take my
- 1:26:03chain, like, I took a 10 year old to a school, but because he
- 1:26:06was just a good anymore. And so, I, you know, I've kind
- 1:26:11of gotten to that point. So everything, all my college
- 1:26:13experience, and all my experience in the universe, Mark
- 1:26:16sighs. Now, Is for Dale, like even the
- 1:26:20things like I said, with the slaves and things like that.
- 1:26:22Like I literally was looking for a slave and this kind of poured
- 1:26:26back into the club thing. When you're teaching younger
- 1:26:30people, they don't know how to do things.
- 1:26:31So the block push the stuff like that.
- 1:26:33I had to come up with a drill first within the jump off the
- 1:26:36block. So this were, like, I would do.
- 1:26:38One of the time you send me put a whole bunch of cushion.
- 1:26:40Got a video where I literally got my whole bunch of Christians
- 1:26:44off the wall. You know what?
- 1:26:45People will run into the wall. Yep.
- 1:26:47All off and put them on. The ground.
- 1:26:48I said just jump off the block. I'll make people stand on the
- 1:26:51Block. Just jump as far as you can.
- 1:26:53And so I started that drill and it will literally just the teeth
- 1:26:57people. Look, stop using one foot to get
- 1:27:00out the block. You don't have one pedal.
- 1:27:02You got two pills. So I had some old, you blocks
- 1:27:05with you. I mean, you're probably
- 1:27:06recognize them something. You your first blog called old.
- 1:27:18Eastern to jump out the block with both feet.
- 1:27:22And then I'm like, well and now I need to teach them to get that
- 1:27:24free up and down, you know, and so, you got to think I was
- 1:27:28dealing with kids. And so, I would take some of my
- 1:27:32high school, my college drills and bring it down to them.
- 1:27:35And that's where I really started looking for that sleigh.
- 1:27:38And I thought, you know, 2007, when I think I got it, whatever
- 1:27:42your 2007-2008 not look for that sled forever.
- 1:27:46Because I was like, am I going to have to be R1 or whatever.
- 1:27:48And it worked, perfect, because of the key, the group of kids, I
- 1:27:51had didn't know how to get that. One, two, three, or four steps
- 1:27:55down, coming out the blocks. Well, I need to put some type of
- 1:27:59resistors on its they came out. I think I may have done one
- 1:28:02thing and I put a long strap on there because some of my kids
- 1:28:05are shorter and Halloween to not, you know.
- 1:28:09So if anybody want to go get State, get to stay at his
- 1:28:11perfect. I put long straps on there.
- 1:28:14Yeah. Whatever.
- 1:28:14Just so, so, so it'll, it'll stay smooth as you can.
- 1:28:18Down the track. So just hit, it's interesting,
- 1:28:20you've had it since 07. So I started working here in 06
- 1:28:252017. 2017. 70. Okay.
- 1:28:27Okay, as I say, because I started working, I was six and I
- 1:28:30remember shortly after I started working in August.
- 1:28:34So maybe by that spring you we have pretty regular Rd meetings.
- 1:28:38You know why are our whole culture is about, you know,
- 1:28:43creating better Innovative Equipment, so coaches can go
- 1:28:46coach, you know? So I remember one day and that
- 1:28:49first year are now former VP of R&D brings out the sled and I
- 1:28:55was like oh what is this? Well yeah, just let it go.
- 1:28:59There were starting blocks. I was like, dude, I coach for 10
- 1:29:02years and look for something like that.
- 1:29:04Like you know, we used to at one point we were tying string to
- 1:29:08the blocks so you have a regular sled as soon as the kid cleared
- 1:29:12the blocks, we drip the blocks out of the way.
- 1:29:14So the sled wouldn't demolish it.
- 1:29:17I mean, I was just Hot, where's this been my whole life?
- 1:29:20You know, it's amazing and I tell you, you know, it is been,
- 1:29:26it literally on fire every year. You know, it's the Sprint
- 1:29:28starts, Leo, goes over the starting block.
- 1:29:30Its it really a whoever I was before me, so I wish I could
- 1:29:34take credit, but whoever came up with that idea.
- 1:29:38It's pretty stinkin amazing. So you brought us some cool
- 1:29:42things that I wanted to make sure we talked about here as we
- 1:29:45start to wrap up today. So, you know, if you've listened
- 1:29:49to the show at all and if you know me at all, I'm a huge
- 1:29:54proponent of social media. I just I think it's I love
- 1:29:57communication and I think that's what social media is about.
- 1:30:01That's how you and I started I created all of the Gila flooding
- 1:30:05social media, our Twitter, our Facebook, and our Instagram and
- 1:30:09was running it. That was I was completely
- 1:30:12control social media about a year or so ago but that's how
- 1:30:15you and I touched base somehow. Probably followed you first.
- 1:30:19And so, I remember those videos of the jumping onto the old
- 1:30:24pole, vault, and high jump mats. And then I remember you were, I
- 1:30:27don't know if that was if it wasn't even there some indoor
- 1:30:29facility or at you'd have wood behind the box so they could
- 1:30:33jump out. And yeah, this is amazing and so
- 1:30:38I don't remember who I'll give you the credit.
- 1:30:41I don't remember if you reached out to me or I reach.
- 1:30:43I really think I reached out to you to say, hey, thanks man.
- 1:30:45I appreciate the videos of our Sprint starts It's LED, but what
- 1:30:49was amazing to me is you responded.
- 1:30:52It always irritates me when people have social media and
- 1:30:54they don't, they don't respond. You've got something on your
- 1:30:58Instagram, which is tell everybody.
- 1:31:01What is your Instagram handle? It is it coatsy bone?
- 1:31:06So coach C and then Vaughn, right?
- 1:31:10Yes. Yes.
- 1:31:12So you've got something like 20,000 followers on.
- 1:31:18Instagram. That's I mean, come on, man.
- 1:31:20Let's be real here. That's Pretty stinking cool.
- 1:31:23I feel like I'm a big social media guy and I don't get 28,000
- 1:31:26people, talk to us about, like how you started Instagram.
- 1:31:30Why, and how did this growth occur?
- 1:31:33Okay, yeah. So now forth, the me of us
- 1:31:38reaching out to each other with when I got to slay, his people
- 1:31:43were asking about it and I was like, man, the only Way I could
- 1:31:48do it is tag. Yes, that's right.
- 1:32:18Somebody you can actually talk to it, so I like you but I'm
- 1:32:23telling you man, you got to beat this guy, is that I never really
- 1:32:33wanted to do social media. It's the first thing.
- 1:32:37I think I started with is maybe a Facebook account, I didn't
- 1:32:40want that or whatever and a Twitter account and I'll start a
- 1:32:43Twitter which is all the same handle, same name.
- 1:32:47It's because my kiss was on Twitter and and one of the guys
- 1:32:51was like, hey, you need to start Twitter so you can kind of watch
- 1:32:54the kids and say all that stuff. So I ended up starting Twitter
- 1:32:57and then and I would I would record my kids on camera.
- 1:33:01But when I tried to send the video that would be built it,
- 1:33:05there was you know you got to think this back 2009-10, you do
- 1:33:09no such thing as 4K. And so I would I was trying to
- 1:33:13figure out how to get the videos to the kids.
- 1:33:15And so in kids at that time, On wasn't really on Facebook at the
- 1:33:22time and I just wasn't really familiar with Twitter.
- 1:33:25So Instagram came out and I figured out you know?
- 1:33:28Okay well hey I can post videos on this G so it all started by
- 1:33:31me trying to get the kids, huh? Listen, I need you to watch the
- 1:33:36video so you can learn how to do this.
- 1:33:38And so, you know, I couldn't send it to the parents, anything
- 1:33:40like that. I did you watch your video and
- 1:33:42it started out just that way. We're literally trying to get
- 1:33:47videos too. Those kids and you couldn't
- 1:33:49inbox that the time because you couldn't be in the video, don't
- 1:33:52be too big or something. Right now, I finally figured
- 1:33:55out, you know, okay, it's got to be because I used to be like 15
- 1:33:58seconds stuff like this. I both multiple videos.
- 1:34:01So, I had to kind of, I mean, I live, you have to evolve the
- 1:34:03way, I would get as much information to them in a small
- 1:34:07videos as I could. And so Indian, God literally put
- 1:34:10it up, I wouldn't put a name on anything like that, but I would
- 1:34:13just tagged them in writing titles on this.
- 1:34:16So I can kind of like, go to this.
- 1:34:18You're so on. Well, you know, I think one
- 1:34:21night I posted a video and we were doing like a, I have some
- 1:34:25some bands on them in a belt. I was literally just looking for
- 1:34:28anything. I got a bungee cord that was
- 1:34:31used with a something else I got.
- 1:34:33Bungee cords, hook them up, set, some micro hurtles down or
- 1:34:37whatever. I was trying to teach them to
- 1:34:38get out with some resistance and they literally, you know, I just
- 1:34:42had a couple kids, are you the Block Set?
- 1:34:44Boom. And anyway, there was a video on
- 1:34:46my Instagram. I woke up and it was like a
- 1:34:49thousand notifications on my phone and somehow I don't know
- 1:34:51you know I don't know how social me to work with the video got in
- 1:34:54the explore page and I had all these people following sorry I
- 1:34:58had maybe six seven hundred people maybe 1000 people calling
- 1:35:01look like 3,000 then I think you know and then like 6000 5000 and
- 1:35:10you know, I kind of had this thing about social media where
- 1:35:13where it's for the kids and, you know, maybe four coaches and
- 1:35:17stuff like that. But you know, you post notices,
- 1:35:19I want to follow, you know what, I'm not going to do any negative
- 1:35:22stuff for any. I don't need all the political
- 1:35:24stuff, right? It's not the wrong with
- 1:35:27whatever, but I just kind of wanted to be about information.
- 1:35:30And so I started kind of may be seeking out trainers and other
- 1:35:33athletes and things like that cause I just wanted to kind of
- 1:35:35wash them. And so it ended up growing, not
- 1:35:39won't stay overnight but maybe from 2012 to.
- 1:35:42Now I would it would just you know maybe a video will go you
- 1:35:45know, some people take the video they were reached.
- 1:35:47And reach there. Yeah, so you go I would have but
- 1:35:51it all started out because I was trying to let the kids watch the
- 1:35:55videos and then the other side of it is, hello.
- 1:35:58I'm a coach, there's a lot of coaches out there.
- 1:36:00They got social media, they can now watch my kids, you know?
- 1:36:04Yeah. It was kind of like, what we're,
- 1:36:15you know, what they keep will doing.
- 1:36:17Like, look how hard Working. It's not Outsider.
- 1:36:19We doing all these different drills is I'm getting a bit of
- 1:36:22pushback, all that stupid drill, or that's dead or why you got
- 1:36:25the hurtles down, I'll get a little bit of that, but it did.
- 1:36:28I will try to explain to some people, you know, I will try to
- 1:36:30respond back and say just why we doing it every now and then I
- 1:36:33would get some negativity. But the whole point of my social
- 1:36:37media was one just to get the videos back to the kids, you
- 1:36:40know, maybe get a sometimes you got to think I'm a new trainer
- 1:36:44but I'm also a college coach and most people can't see anything
- 1:36:47like Parents don't know what's going on and they're not able to
- 1:36:50stay at practice. Well, it gave them a window or a
- 1:36:53glimpse of what we going on. And so, I, you know, it was just
- 1:36:56the best way to do is I'll do the same thing on my Facebook
- 1:36:59with me. You are from Facebook, I don't
- 1:37:01know. So Facebook is more or less for
- 1:37:04the parents because most of my pants is on Facebook, right?
- 1:37:07And all the other stuff with mostly like Snapchat, I don't
- 1:37:11know. Maybe three, four, five years
- 1:37:12ago could kids on the. I literally just got to figure
- 1:37:15out a way to get your videos to the kid.
- 1:37:18All right, you know? So I think it may be at 20:20
- 1:37:23Point 120 points? Yeah.
- 1:37:24I pulled it up. Yeah.
- 1:37:25I wanted to look at it. Here's what's amazing?
- 1:37:27First of all? Well, take a step back.
- 1:37:30You're not on Tick-Tock, are you?
- 1:37:32No, no. I'm okay, yeah, it's getting
- 1:37:37ready to get banned or something, man.
- 1:37:38So we don't talk about that. But Instagrams, I'm looking at
- 1:37:41your Instagram right now 20-point 3,000 followers.
- 1:37:47That's Easing. But what I mean, there's just so
- 1:37:50much. I love about your Instagram
- 1:37:52here. You're following less than 400
- 1:37:54people. And what I mean by that, I like
- 1:37:56that is. It's not.
- 1:37:57You know, there's a, there's kind of a tradition if you will
- 1:37:59a follow back, right? If you follow someone, they'll
- 1:38:01follow you back. So some people have a strategy
- 1:38:03of, oh, I'll go follow every athlete.
- 1:38:05Every coach there is and then get the follow back.
- 1:38:10You're not, you're not getting that on purpose.
- 1:38:12But so, the reason you're getting followers is because of
- 1:38:15the content you're providing value.
- 1:38:18You to people people these 20,000, most of these 20,000
- 1:38:21people are following you because they see value in the content
- 1:38:24you're publishing. So I love that and then I go
- 1:38:27through. And I'm just, you know, I'm
- 1:38:29starting from you. Just push this one three days
- 1:38:31ago, 1300 reviews, 1500 views. 6500 this one was liked by 470
- 1:38:41people. There are some huge, I mean,
- 1:38:44it's interesting how consistent, you know, call it And then I
- 1:38:49remember I just saw one this morning.
- 1:38:51No. Where is it at?
- 1:38:53There's a 4000 this this video here was liked by nearly 1,000
- 1:38:59people. That's amazing.
- 1:39:03Where was the one? Gosh.
- 1:39:05Dang it. No, I just thought there's 85
- 1:39:06hundred views if you go back. Maybe about two or three rows,
- 1:39:10you'll see some videos, maybe like by 6,000 people.
- 1:39:13Oh no 12,000 731. And it's they're doing latter
- 1:39:19work with, they're not bungees, but they're the release belts or
- 1:39:23whatnot. Yes, sir, yeah, twelve thousand
- 1:39:26four thousand. I mean, this is again what I
- 1:39:30love about it. Ten thousand is most people
- 1:39:35think of social media as self-promotion, you started it
- 1:39:39as hey I've got to find a way as a utility.
- 1:39:42Like I've got to find a way to get video to my kids and even
- 1:39:45maybe their parents you're right back.
- 1:39:48Then it wasn't as easy. It is today.
- 1:39:49Would file sharing, even it's still not even super easy today.
- 1:39:52Let's be real. But you so it started out as a
- 1:39:55utility of like, hey, I need to serve my kids, my oath leitz.
- 1:39:59How do I figure out? OK, let's use this Instagram
- 1:40:01thing and then the value you brought with, you know, block
- 1:40:05start Innovation things that you do.
- 1:40:07And then even the recruiting aspect of seeing the kids for
- 1:40:10other coaches to see, I mean, it's no, it's no haphazard that
- 1:40:16you have 20,000 I mean honestly you know that doesn't just
- 1:40:19happen just because it happens there has to be value in there.
- 1:40:23So I'm just just so impressed with with that attitude of it
- 1:40:27man. And honestly again with that
- 1:40:29self-promotion piece like I don't I rarely see you in the
- 1:40:33video, you know, it's not like you are selfie and like, hey,
- 1:40:36watch today's, you know, practice it is, it seems to be
- 1:40:39so focused on the athlete and the training.
- 1:40:44Absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:40:45And so what I try I will literally, you know, got the
- 1:40:49clearest phone are could at the time because I was trying to I
- 1:40:54think I would maybe taking something I wanted people to see
- 1:40:57their steps in the ground, the sea.
- 1:41:00So you know I think I got a video something where Tyson Gay
- 1:41:03maybe it's often power couple of people jumping out the blocks
- 1:41:07you can see why I'm really track heavy on a lot of my stuff but I
- 1:41:10wanted them to see the distance that was covered on the first
- 1:41:13day of Well I think I had a video and you can't really tell
- 1:41:16what that first foot hear that. And so the everything you do,
- 1:41:21you know, I'm a record, you know, 20 videos in one practice
- 1:41:25and you may see a 30 second clip.
- 1:41:27I try to explain that the coaches, but the other content I
- 1:41:30was putting up with trying to show people things and
- 1:41:33sometimes, you're not, then I would put up a failure,
- 1:41:35something like that show people. Hey, this is what it was.
- 1:41:37That happens. Real life, real life.
- 1:41:43Try to explain to people. Hey, this is what we're going.
- 1:41:46Well, I started trying to explain to people maybe back in
- 1:41:492014, something like that because I would get a lot of
- 1:41:52inbox. Hey, why are you doing this?
- 1:41:53And so on? But at first, I was literally
- 1:41:55trying to just get information to my kids and so on like that.
- 1:41:59And so now what I'm you know I'll put a title on the video
- 1:42:03people are come asking me for stuff and you know things like
- 1:42:06that, I try to explain to them, you know, I got up, you know,
- 1:42:09maybe a drill, whatever running over my car and I try to explain
- 1:42:13it. Him.
- 1:42:14Listen we're doing this and this athlete is like this, this face
- 1:42:18might not work for you, but this is my base set up.
- 1:42:21And while I'm doing this for every micro heard bill has a
- 1:42:23different purpose, I try to explain to my look practice.
- 1:42:26We practice five days a week, okay?
- 1:42:29And and, and practices, at least two two, almost three hours.
- 1:42:33You seen a 30 second clip. I mean, that's like, you know,
- 1:42:37you watching me bake a cake and you see me take the cake out and
- 1:42:39says, 235 and I, hey, I need a break.
- 1:42:51So I try to explain to people like this and just, this is
- 1:42:54this, you know, I get a lot of people come in, man, that bike
- 1:42:57is not straight. That's the point.
- 1:42:59Like, its development. Like this is his first time
- 1:43:02doing a trio. I'm glad you noticed that they
- 1:43:03want doing something right now that actually gets to see the
- 1:43:07same thing that you did in the something like, oh okay.
- 1:43:09So I'm like, you know, I get a lot of people that are
- 1:43:12criticizing the kid for now. Not doing something right now.
- 1:43:14Wait a minute. Now listen that young man, a
- 1:43:17young lady is learning how to do something.
- 1:43:20I'm posting a video for educational purposes and I let
- 1:43:23him know. I kind of in boxing in something
- 1:43:25like there but I try to keep it respectful but I get more hey
- 1:43:29coach you know you know Banks or whatever and I try to respond to
- 1:43:33everybody what it be a - Commodore, father come here and
- 1:43:36try to tell them hey just what I'm doing and so on but it's
- 1:43:40more or less for those coaches to see the kids and morally.
- 1:43:43For the kid go back and see it now.
- 1:43:45Does it does it have a certain, you know, you know, does it
- 1:43:51doesn't recruit people and probably does I mean?
- 1:43:53And, and I, it's not it's not about that, you know, if I could
- 1:43:56go back down to 2,000 people, you know, that's fine, but I'm
- 1:43:59still going to kind of do the same thing or whatever, you
- 1:44:02know. So I do get a lot of people.
- 1:44:04Hey, I want to come to your school, I want to come run to
- 1:44:06your, I want to come to your club and things like that, but I
- 1:44:09explain to them, you know. Hey do you have a coach?
- 1:44:12Your coach is doing the best? They can, you know, you're going
- 1:44:14to have your coach to contact me or you guys, you don't want to
- 1:44:18show you coach some of the video, but don't think that that
- 1:44:21you see this little candy right here that there is other stuff
- 1:44:25to it. And so and I would like if you
- 1:44:27got someone that's working with you cherish that person because
- 1:44:31they don't have to, you know, if your coach is talking to you if
- 1:44:34he is she is working with you day care.
- 1:44:37You know what, you need to worry about is when they're not
- 1:44:39talking to you, that's when they when they stop talking to you.
- 1:44:41So I always try to make sure that they do.
- 1:44:44So caught up in what they see on the social media that they
- 1:44:47forget that you still got to leave one coat.
- 1:44:49I get people all the time because I need to come down
- 1:44:51here. Well no you got someone working
- 1:44:53with you. Look look, don't talk to them.
- 1:44:55So them new things or whatever in the most respectful way
- 1:44:58because I don't know that every girl that I got works for every
- 1:45:01asking, right? You know, I always tell them,
- 1:45:04you know, not to promote your product.
- 1:45:07But, you know, I talk about Slade all the time.
- 1:45:09I'll talk about the blocks out, I've had different blocks, I've
- 1:45:13had it Different hurdles, you know, I've had the hurdles, you
- 1:45:17know, you know, that has a bar on the outside up.
- 1:45:20So you got the little more hurdle and then I got like a
- 1:45:23little. I hate that hurdle because if
- 1:45:25they, you know, the kids to step on it but they do trip the back
- 1:45:28of the hurricane come back and hit them.
- 1:45:30So, it's a purpose. Why I pick out that Jill?
- 1:45:33Um, they they give a hurdle or whatever because I love, you
- 1:45:37know, when they fall. So it's not just the look of it,
- 1:45:40but if they hit her. Yeah, because utilities, We're
- 1:45:44supposed to and and we are okay. And so that's why, you know, I
- 1:45:50tell him to go get those type of hurdles.
- 1:45:52This guy, tell him to go get this leg, you know, I think
- 1:45:54there's someone else that may try to make it stay like that.
- 1:45:57I'm like, I'm never had an issue.
- 1:45:59You know, I never had a rusty issue.
- 1:46:00Anything like that? So, everything is for a purpose
- 1:46:03and on the carpet. Well, I tell, you know, when you
- 1:46:05put yourself out there like you do like, you know, the clinical
- 1:46:10exam, am I can't even say the word, the wait.
- 1:46:13That is to say this is you invite the haters, right?
- 1:46:17I mean, there's going to be a few ever, there's some people
- 1:46:19that just in honestly, you know, when ideal and see people who
- 1:46:24know a lot of it's Anonymous, of course, you know, they take the
- 1:46:27time to say something negative about any post but never talk
- 1:46:31about yours to me. I actually feel sorry for those
- 1:46:33people like man, your life is so bad.
- 1:46:36You took the time out there, you had the time to bash.
- 1:46:39Someone who's just trying to do work.
- 1:46:41You know, it's amaze me. But so you invite those, hey
- 1:46:43He's out there. But what I love about, I just
- 1:46:46another aspect of your specifically, the Instagram
- 1:46:49where I pay attention mostly to you is your connectivity with
- 1:46:54the audience. So every time someone replies
- 1:46:58and you get a lots of replies on these things, you respond, even
- 1:47:02if it's a simple thank-you or I've seen you do a heart emoji,
- 1:47:06you know, just there's always a reply back from you which to me
- 1:47:11again when we start talking about humbleness and Your
- 1:47:14character that that's what that is.
- 1:47:16You know, it's not responding on social media is like having a
- 1:47:20phone and not answering the phone or not answering a text
- 1:47:24like you would never do that. So if someone takes the time to
- 1:47:28reply on your post or send you a message, hate to say you owe it.
- 1:47:32But man yo something right I mean it's communication and you
- 1:47:35do such an outstanding job there.
- 1:47:38Yeah. Well I will say it so I you
- 1:47:40know, of course, social media is all over the world.
- 1:47:42So I get a lot of people from Don't know exactly America
- 1:47:44follow. Yeah like that.
- 1:47:46So I mean I mean I had to just let you into my inbox one day is
- 1:47:54looking for just you know hope or something whatever.
- 1:47:58And so when you when you realize that the other side of it even
- 1:48:01that young kid from, I don't know up in Michigan, who has no
- 1:48:05one to train them or, or, or from nowhere, Idaho, whatever.
- 1:48:09You know, it's crazy where you, where you meet people from and
- 1:48:12they're like, I don't have Any coach?
- 1:48:14I just love track. You are my coat.
- 1:48:18Wow. Hey, I acknowledge you.
- 1:48:39I don't know if anyone else in your world is acknowledging you,
- 1:48:42but I see you, you Thanks for supporting my try to do
- 1:48:45something to let him know. Hey, I'm oh, you know, I'm
- 1:48:47supporting you that type of deal because at the end of the day,
- 1:48:50we're here to serve and we're here to honor everybody else.
- 1:48:53That's grandma. Just one who led a way to do it.
- 1:48:56So, you know, the title of coach is a really especially guys like
- 1:49:00you and I who are in this and people listening right now, you
- 1:49:03know, that's a, that's a honorable title, right?
- 1:49:07Some people strive to have the title of CEO one day or judge,
- 1:49:13Judge a lawyer etcetera, that title of coaches, so special.
- 1:49:19And sometimes, you know, I've heard the negative side of it
- 1:49:22that, you know, anybody can hang a shingle and say, you're a
- 1:49:24coach and all that kind of stuff and certainly, that's true,
- 1:49:27you're right. But that title, when a kid when
- 1:49:30an athlete honors you with that term, whether they've chosen
- 1:49:35your college program. They've chosen to join your high
- 1:49:37school program. What's it like?
- 1:49:40Because you just talked about something.
- 1:49:42I've Don't think about very much that kid in Idaho and upper
- 1:49:47Michigan, who doesn't have a coach loves track and he calls
- 1:49:52you, he or she because of a connection they've made with you
- 1:49:55over social media says, hey, you're my coach, what does that
- 1:49:59feel like? Well, it makes you at least
- 1:50:05makes me want to make sure that I'm giving them my best.
- 1:50:10You know, you know, because you just, you just never know.
- 1:50:13Know what they may be. Needing you can't answer
- 1:50:15everything. I mean I've done Instagram
- 1:50:17called like you know where, which I think is pretty cool.
- 1:50:19I get on there and I will listen, I can't your videos
- 1:50:22fuzzy, just call me, call me at this time, pass on the
- 1:50:26videotape, you running and so. And I may be able to help them
- 1:50:30and so you know, you can't ask for everybody but I like look,
- 1:50:34send me video that type of. So so, so that deal.
- 1:50:37I guess you just automatically or I feel like I automatically
- 1:50:41like, well maybe I can help you The bit, you know, you know, let
- 1:50:45me see what I can do here. And so it works out for me
- 1:50:48because I get to meet someone. And there's someone is a little
- 1:50:52bit more successful. I actually showed up at a meet,
- 1:50:56we went, maybe the Indiana, someone with her meeting
- 1:50:59Indiana, and I met a girl from Minnesota.
- 1:51:02I'll follow her. And she took a picture of me in
- 1:51:04college, and she ran up to me, like, hey, I follow you.
- 1:51:06I said, I have no idea. You know, I didn't tell you
- 1:51:08that, I had no idea. I think we'll listen, I need you
- 1:51:11to inbox me so I can know who you are.
- 1:51:13To make sure I'm following in that type of deal.
- 1:51:15And once I met her, I kind of look.
- 1:51:17I think I'll name was the code or whatever.
- 1:51:19I need to go to you listening, I'm sorry.
- 1:51:21Yeah, whatever. So, but this young lady Dakota,
- 1:51:26I mean, like I said, I'd get people from every different
- 1:51:28races so you would have think that that that that she was.
- 1:51:34I mean, I mean, you would have thought that we known each
- 1:51:36other. You got to think we're in the
- 1:51:37middle of this track mate. She's got on a different
- 1:51:39uniform, that's young white girl.
- 1:51:41I'm a black guy was kind of love.
- 1:51:43Feels unit. Ran up to me.
- 1:51:45We're hugging. We're talking both pre covid and
- 1:51:47everything like that. He had to say it.
- 1:51:50It's like what are y'all doing out?
- 1:51:51Everybody's got to see why a psycho as before this stuff,
- 1:51:54man, I don't hug now. Small college program and she's
- 1:52:38gotten a lot better because of it.
- 1:52:41And so what I try to do is make sure You know, I go back and
- 1:52:45check on lot, go back and send messages to people and, and I
- 1:52:48try to, you know, even with your post, you'll see me go in and
- 1:52:52you put something. I try to put a little fire Mosey
- 1:52:54on into something like that because I want to show support
- 1:52:57to everybody. I can.
- 1:52:59So what I fall you're not I'll go in and try to show you
- 1:53:03support because you never know who was healthy.
- 1:53:06And so just like that young lady or the kids from India, I get a
- 1:53:09lot of people internationally, believed in life, whatever, from
- 1:53:12South Africa, south America Brazil and things like that, you
- 1:53:15know, I had to get my Google translator out and I never know
- 1:53:29what type of I don't know why it just admit.
- 1:53:45Yeah, I remember something right.
- 1:53:46Yeah, yeah, yeah. Used to be a belt.
- 1:53:50Actually got a Bluetooth speaker in the couple other things that
- 1:53:53I still got. I got a coaster?
- 1:53:55Yeah, I think. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:53:59Yes, I got the coast. We got the little loops on me
- 1:54:45all around the belt. Yeah the max don't with
- 1:54:47anything. I love that belt because I could
- 1:54:51put my piercings anywhere I want on the belt or whatever you
- 1:54:54literally found that belt for I think I was trying to describe
- 1:54:57the something I think. I think we're the only makers of
- 1:55:00that belt. To be honest with you.
- 1:55:02I don't think I think I could be wrong.
- 1:55:04Yeah, I think you are like I said you, you got there but I
- 1:55:09had to go get it, whatever I loved about like I use it all
- 1:55:12the time. I hate to leave. it out in the
- 1:55:13rain and what particular by my But she was able to give me the
- 1:55:44right belt and they like they like, hey just you know tell me
- 1:55:47your address whatever and so that worked really well.
- 1:55:50And so always, you know, probably send people your way
- 1:55:53that's because I'm like, listen. You see my videos of me?
- 1:55:55How I'm using a sled. You can actually talk to someone
- 1:55:58but I'm telling you it's well worth it.
- 1:56:00And so that's why I respond back on my social media just because
- 1:56:04of the fact that it may help someone.
- 1:56:05Yeah, I think you and I have the same kind of attitude towards
- 1:56:09that you know, I think we both do things not With an
- 1:56:14expectation of a return, you know, honestly, if I do
- 1:56:16something solid for you, and I totally forgot I sent you that
- 1:56:21goody bag of some into a, a stuff and yeah, you know, I do
- 1:56:26that. And I think you're in that same
- 1:56:27way with the videos and the communication, if I do it, and I
- 1:56:30expect something back, well, well, then I'm not really a good
- 1:56:33guy. It is my opinion, right.
- 1:56:35I expect if I have expectations and then also, it sets me up for
- 1:56:39failure, right? So if I expect you to do
- 1:56:41something for me and you don't do it.
- 1:56:42Well, then I get So all sad and everything.
- 1:56:45But if I do something like hey you know what, this guy's cool,
- 1:56:47he's doing some cool things, I got these cool things, let me
- 1:56:50see if he likes them. If he doesn't know well that you
- 1:56:51know, he'll have it, your belt messed up.
- 1:56:54Well, hey, doing the right thing is always the right thing.
- 1:56:57I should take care of them would zero expectations and I think
- 1:57:01you're that same way I love hearing that story about the
- 1:57:04girl from Minnesota. I mean that is you know we all
- 1:57:08have the ability. We don't all take the
- 1:57:11opportunity but we all have the ability.
- 1:57:13Tea to affect people's lives in a positive manner, and that and
- 1:57:17that Circle runs, sometimes as small as and it should run as
- 1:57:21small as your household, right? You're with your family, your
- 1:57:25network, your your neighborhood. It can that Circle can get
- 1:57:29bigger if you're in charge or work inside of a program, your
- 1:57:33own private business and then social media allows us to widen
- 1:57:37that Circle even more and then to your point worldwide, you
- 1:57:40know, from South America and Brazil and overseas.
- 1:57:43See, he's, you know, we all have that ability to make make
- 1:57:49someone's life better. And it here's the thing, as I
- 1:57:52think maybe we watch TV too much, we think it takes this
- 1:57:55Grand gesture. Like oh man, if I don't fly up
- 1:57:58to Minnesota, personally, work with that girl that I then what
- 1:58:01does it matter like? No, no, you just, you answered
- 1:58:03some messages, you put out some videos and that affected her
- 1:58:06life tremendously. That's so awesome.
- 1:58:10And I tell you it's such a jerk today as we Walk through High
- 1:58:15School, through college, through outside training and track and
- 1:58:19field, and things like that, and the club, there's a theme of
- 1:58:23giving with you and you know and and thank goodness because you
- 1:58:29have given, you have been given. So I yeah, I want to give a
- 1:58:33shout-out. I know we don't want to say the
- 1:58:35person's name for privacy reasons.
- 1:58:36I respect that in, by the way, it's not just this person,
- 1:58:40you've had others, but that person who, you know, took a
- 1:58:43leap of faith Faith saw, what you do, what you do for, no
- 1:58:47return. Like you weren't asking, you
- 1:58:49know, for anything, you know, people like that specifically in
- 1:58:52track and field as were, you know, inside this world here is,
- 1:58:57you know, so great for our sport, how much I hope that
- 1:59:00person knows how many kids and kids have kids that that money
- 1:59:06helped with equipment opportunity coaching etcetera,
- 1:59:12you know, chat. Out to that person, into the
- 1:59:14many people that have helped you along the way.
- 1:59:17And the other side of that is thank you for the opportunities.
- 1:59:21In the, the positivity, you've given to many many kids and
- 1:59:25here's the great thing man. You ain't even close to retiring
- 1:59:28my friend. So you've got me many many, many
- 1:59:31years. Show you this.
- 1:59:44This is a so-so. Do I get some type of return?
- 1:59:48I meet great people. You know, I met you.
- 1:59:51So I consider you a friend rocket to see you somewhere.
- 1:59:54We can go out. We can have lunch whatever, you
- 1:59:57know. So, so I get that.
- 1:59:58And then the other side of it is the young people that I worked
- 2:00:01with get to be successful. So I do so, I think there is a
- 2:00:04return. I'll be food store, or I'll be,
- 2:00:06you know, lying to say that I didn't get something out of it.
- 2:00:10I mean, seeing someone walk across the stage with a degree.
- 2:00:13Yeah, you got to think my first class to graduate, like
- 2:00:19everybody in the entire family. I mean, everybody there walk
- 2:00:23across the stage, nobody that family had a college degree.
- 2:00:26So I think goes back, 2011 or 2012 everybody who walked across
- 2:00:31the stage. It was the first time college
- 2:00:34graduate wind, so I stepped. I'm telling you like all the
- 2:00:38time, we run fast, all the things that we want, all the
- 2:00:40meats, all the races, nothing too.
- 2:00:43After the fact that those eight kids walk across that stage and
- 2:00:46got that thing. Last thing I still got that
- 2:00:48picture. So so so is there a is there
- 2:00:51like a benefit to me? I'm telling something like that
- 2:00:54right there, it's way more just am holding it up with pride like
- 2:00:57look Mom, I graduated from college or whatever, so so.
- 2:01:01So Bob we had eight National tie, you know, I don't, I would
- 2:01:04never be as great as. Yeah.
- 2:01:06I was supposed green or post Mak are opposed brahmana or any of
- 2:01:10those things. But but but my greatness.
- 2:01:13Or I feel like it's very much just those kids achieve
- 2:01:16something that I don't know that they ever believed it that they
- 2:01:18would say. Yeah I know your your humble
- 2:01:22enough that you won't allow this analogy, but I think of when you
- 2:01:26talked about Coach Mac in two different ways, one was the on
- 2:01:29the track coach Mac and working with the kids on their splits,
- 2:01:33the 26:5, and things like that. But also that other side of
- 2:01:36Coach Mac that he saw you in the bank immediately recognized that
- 2:01:40you were one of honestly I don't know if he recognizes you as an
- 2:01:43athlete. It might have just been like,
- 2:01:44hey, this kid needs help, so I'm going to tell them.
- 2:01:46But yeah, I've got influence on this Bank.
- 2:01:48Hey, help. This kid out, right?
- 2:01:49You are doing that same thing, you know, coach Mac was a 40
- 2:01:53year old coach once in his life, you know, long time ago, you
- 2:01:57know, and doing the things he had to build up to become coach
- 2:02:00Mac. You're doing that same thing
- 2:02:02right now with just as much influence to be real, real
- 2:02:05Frank, man. Every time you affect the kid,
- 2:02:07doesn't matter where they're from.
- 2:02:09That's a huge impact that you're making.
- 2:02:11You're just doing such a great job and I was just I'm so
- 2:02:14humbled and proud and honored that you would come on our show
