- 0:00Well, today's story is one that I get asked all the time.
- 0:04I have race car drivers that come up to me and say, Herman,
- 0:09what's them, Dan Spring Smashers and all them load sticks all
- 0:14about. We are in a new era and there
- 0:17are still a lot of race car drivers that don't understand
- 0:20load, load sticks and things of this nature.
- 0:24So let's go through the history of how we've sat cars up or set
- 0:29them up and where we're at now. All right, Charlie's working the
- 0:33camera. And let's start from the
- 0:37beginning. Years ago, we had four scales,
- 0:42All right? Now these are considerably real
- 0:45nice electronic scales. Mike Midler made them back in
- 0:49the day. We lost Mike, man, we sure do
- 0:53miss him. But Mike, you know, sold these
- 0:57scales. These are electronic scales.
- 1:00So the car, this would be the left front, this would be the
- 1:03right front, this would be the right rear, this would be the
- 1:06left rear. And these wires would go to each
- 1:11corner and we would read all the weights right here.
- 1:14And all of you old guys, you love this except Scott
- 1:18Bloomquist and my brother Rusty and Mark Martin and even me.
- 1:22We grew up on the legendary grain scales.
- 1:25The big old scales are cars way up in the air, and we'd set the
- 1:29car up for hours. Well, the problem with this is
- 1:33you can't take these big grain scales on the road.
- 1:38You know, some some thought they could.
- 1:40And boy, there were Montrocities back in the day.
- 1:44To this day, nobody likes taking scales on the road.
- 1:48You look at the World of Outlaw light models, You look at a
- 1:50Lucas Oil light models. Where are you going to set it
- 1:54up? You're going to find a Walmart
- 1:55parking lot. You're going to borrow a guy's
- 1:57garage. So we still have these.
- 2:01And let me tell you what the purpose of these scales are for
- 2:04now, your overall weight of your car left to right and there are
- 2:09still some old school guys that love setting their cars up on
- 2:12scales. However it is AI was going to
- 2:16cuss. It is a lot of work.
- 2:18You got to Jack the thing up, Jack this whole car up, put it
- 2:22on, take the left or axle out, take the left front, the right
- 2:27front, the right rear, shocks off, and it is just a ton of
- 2:31work. So how do we go on the road?
- 2:35How do these traveling racers go on the road and adjust their car
- 2:39from track to track? We're at El Dora.
- 2:42Well, then the next night we got to go down here to Macon
- 2:45Speedway. You're going for more of the
- 2:48world's the fastest dirt tracks to one of the world's slowest
- 2:51tracks. How are they changing the
- 2:53chassis on these cars while they're on the road?
- 2:57Now remember, you're running your local track every week.
- 3:01No problem. Use the scales if that's what
- 3:03you want to do. But it's still a lot of work
- 3:05because you got to Jack the car up, you got to pull the axle.
- 3:09I got to take everything off except the left rear shock and
- 3:12whatever have you. I'm going to show you something
- 3:16that is old, but still very new. And yes, I know you have one,
- 3:19right? Let's check it out.
- 3:21Come on. So instead of you putting your
- 3:28car on the scales, this is what we call load.
- 3:34What does your right front weigh?
- 3:37What does your left front weigh? Right rear and left rear.
- 3:41We're going to go to the rear of the car right now.
- 3:43This is a rear spring with a rubber in it, obviously a blue
- 3:49rubber. Right now we got all types of
- 3:53rubbers. You're not checking nothing very
- 3:57secretly out right here. And here's why.
- 4:00Charlie, let's show them the legendary rubbers.
- 4:04Do you want a blue rubber right here?
- 4:07Black, green, yellow, purple. OK, now the purpose are rubbers
- 4:16are adjusting how much your spring smashes as you go in the
- 4:20corner. You're looking good.
- 4:21You go through the middle, you're starting to transfer more
- 4:24weight to the right rear. We want timing.
- 4:28Timing as we go in the corner, we're getting loose.
- 4:31Then it sinks. So let's go to the For all you
- 4:34erasers that that are afraid and you're embarrassed, the
- 4:37herminator's here to help you. Check it out.
- 4:40We want to help my buddy here. This is the Ultra force.
- 4:43This is by Chad Weirs. So we just turned it on.
- 4:48Let's watch it. OK, Herman just pushes.
- 4:52All right, now we're going to go to manual.
- 4:54We're going to do manual, we're going to 0 it hold your finger
- 4:58down 00 means that now the machine's going to work all
- 5:04right, so here's what we're going to do instead of you
- 5:06scaling your car, Charlie, right rear.
- 5:10This is the right rear scale this.
- 5:13If the car's here, this is where it's going to be.
- 5:15You're going to you're going to get the right rear weight, but
- 5:18you don't want to Jack the car if you want to do all that work.
- 5:20So let's just do it here on the Spring Smasher, all right, The
- 5:25herminator going to push this baby up, going to put her in.
- 5:31I can do this in my sleep. All right, So what we're going
- 5:37to do is we're going to use 2121.5 O 21 1/2.
- 5:44If you're like me when I grew up, it's like 125 zero .1250.
- 5:50What is that? It's an eighth of an inch.
- 5:52I'm not real smart. I'm a lot redneck, and to this
- 5:56day, I still don't know a lot. I think 0.75 is 3/4 of an inch,
- 6:00something like that. I don't know.
- 6:03All right, Charlie, let's zoom in here.
- 6:05We're going to go to 21. Let, let's go.
- 6:08Let me see where we go to. Let's go.
- 6:10All right, Let's go to 21 inches.
- 6:13All right, we're going to go to 21 inches now.
- 6:17Now, I like doing things manual because I'm not very smart.
- 6:22I want 21 OO. Right, Let's go.
- 6:25Right. OK, let's just use that.
- 6:28That's close enough. All right, now, center to
- 6:32center, 21 inches. OK, now your chassis builder is
- 6:36going to tell you that number. OK, now come here.
- 6:39C21 point OO is 34 lbs, Right? OK, well, I want, I want 60 lbs.
- 6:51Now, these numbers are way off to protect the chassis builders
- 6:56information. So we're going to take this,
- 7:00we're loosen this up, we're going to take a little load out.
- 7:04All right, right, all right. Now what we're going to do is
- 7:13we're going to screw down to turns.
- 7:15Remember our number was 34, right?
- 7:17Now, watch, watch. I'm going to come around 1/2 a
- 7:21turn. One turn.
- 7:26I didn't go down enough. All right, So here we go.
- 7:29I went two turns. All right, I've smashed the
- 7:34spring. Two turns.
- 7:37Now, these are big threads. So when somebody says go down a
- 7:40half a turn, that's a lot. That's a lot because they're
- 7:44coarse threads. Charlie, let's zoom in on these
- 7:46threads. See how these threads are very
- 7:48coarse? They're very coarse.
- 7:50So if you just do a half a turn, that's a lot.
- 7:53All right now remember 21 inches was 34.
- 7:57We went down to turns, right, All right, 21 inches.
- 8:07OK, 20.99, that's close. Look, 80 lbs.
- 8:10Thirty 4445460474, 40 something pounds with two turns.
- 8:18So there is so many things you can do with rear load, but this,
- 8:22that is load. That's all there is to it.
- 8:25I know a lot of you old racers are afraid.
- 8:27I know a lot of races that they're pretty decent racers and
- 8:31they talk like they know what load is, but they really don't
- 8:34know what it is. And I, I, I can detect it right
- 8:36away. So what we're doing is going to
- 8:38take the take this off. OK, go down here.
- 8:42OK, now here's what I want to say to you.
- 8:46This this rubber is, is a blue rubber, right?
- 8:49It's a blue rubber. And what that rubber does is it
- 8:54catches the car. So when the spring is weak, it
- 8:57starts to fall over. We put that rubber in that
- 9:01rubber will catch the car in the middle of the corner.
- 9:03Look, car goes in, starts to fall over, starts to go over,
- 9:07rubber catches it. But what kind of rubber do you
- 9:10want? Do you want that rubber I got in
- 9:14there or do we want to come over here and Hibach sells all these
- 9:17rubbers? These are different, different
- 9:19type rubbers, right? What?
- 9:23What do you want? What do you want in your race
- 9:27car? If you're so damn smart.
- 9:31But I see people that get mad at the chassis builders.
- 9:36Damn it, I know I can drive if you would just tell me what to
- 9:39do. It's very complicated and it's
- 9:44not that easy. It's up to you.
- 9:46You might drive differently. Do you go down the straight away
- 9:49and let off the gas and your car falls down or do you go in the
- 9:53corner and you let off 90% start dragging the brake?
- 9:57Do you have a stiff left rear shock on?
- 9:59Now you're saying Kenny, that's the rear springs.
- 10:03What about the front? All right Charles, let's go
- 10:05right underneath the table here. So once again, I have my let's
- 10:11move the rubber down the way. Let's go to the front of the
- 10:13car. I want to put one turn in the
- 10:16front of my car. Here once again is my Weir's
- 10:19load stick. That's the part number.
- 10:22All right, so I I keep all my information here, so I'm going
- 10:30to hide it because I don't want nobody getting mad at me.
- 10:34All right now look at this beautiful unit.
- 10:38All right, So what I would do is I would take this off right and
- 10:45this is my right front shock top and bottom.
- 10:49Here's the sensor. Now usually I'm putting the car
- 10:52on the Jack stands are on the scales and it's just too much
- 10:56work. So I take the shock off.
- 11:00What I do is I, I put this on, I've got this bad ass bolt nut
- 11:06combination that I've made. I take the shock off, I screw
- 11:11this in and then I put on my measuring device which is right
- 11:17here. It bolts in here like this.
- 11:20It goes in there and this this measures it.
- 11:24So let's say I want my right front say 20 inches and I want
- 11:30it to be 700 pounds, 20 inches, £700.
- 11:38Well, right here, Charlie, this, this area right here, this is
- 11:44going to light up. Let's see if it's it's got any
- 11:46charger. Yeah, there you go.
- 11:47It's loaded. So we would we would press load,
- 11:51it would neutralize it. But anyway, I don't have our
- 11:54zero. We wouldn't have it hooked up.
- 11:55So anyway, this will tell you, this is the front load stick.
- 12:02This is the rear spring smasher. We're checking the rear spring
- 12:06loads with this machine. We're checking the front loads
- 12:11with this load stick and this sensor.
- 12:14So hopefully for a lot of you great racers, the local racers
- 12:20that don't know what load means, load sticks is for the front,
- 12:26load smashers for the rear. You're going to find this
- 12:30machine. You're going to find this
- 12:32machine in Dean Hoffman's trailer, your local racer.
- 12:35You're going to find it most of your local racers now, because
- 12:39if you want to run here on Friday night and you want to go
- 12:433 hours up the road on Saturday, you don't want to have to guess
- 12:47where your car's at. Oh no, we need to put our car on
- 12:50the scales because I think we're off.
- 12:52And boy, let me tell you what that is happening awful lot.
- 12:55So what I just showed you is just a real quick education on
- 13:02putting the car on the scales like we did back in the day.
- 13:05Now listen, I still put my car on the scales to see what the
- 13:08weight is and what the rear weight is and what the left
- 13:11weight is. My car hasn't seen a set of
- 13:15scales. Well, I ran my car two years and
- 13:18I think I might have put it on the scales one time just to see
- 13:21where my rear weight was. But this is what all racers live
- 13:25on now. Rear Spring Smasher and the new
- 13:30load stick. And once again, this is nothing.
- 13:35This is nothing to make fun of because it makes life easier on
- 13:39you. That way you don't have to spend
- 13:41your nights out in the garage while your wife is going to get
- 13:44in here for dinner. You can do this at the racetrack
- 13:47if you want. No more crazy nights on the
- 13:50scales.
