Indiana Honors Civil War Veterans
In Fort Wayne, Indiana, two new memorials honor Hoosier Civil War heroes at the Veterans National Shrine and Museum — a granite bench donated by cemetery director Amber Gonzalez, placed beside the graves of 44th Indiana Infantry soldiers, and a plaque for the “Old Guard” who guarded the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, installed by the Sons of Union Veterans. Gonzalez’s tireless work includes restoring forgotten headstones and adding bronze markers for veterans buried in the Columbarium — all efforts to ensure these brave Indiana soldiers are never forgotten.
