- 0:00Welcome back to the Yukadaky Coaches Show here on Learfield. We're live at Bear
- 0:03Smoke House Barbecue. This is just the first of three coaches shows this week.
- 0:07Tomorrow night at the Football Show with Jim Moore and Mike Crispino and myself
- 0:11as I interviewed Malik Dixon, Williams and Brett Buckman today for the show,
- 0:14and then Wednesday we get into basketball. The men's open practices Wednesday at Gamble
- 0:19and Mike and Wayne will be there from seven till eight on the Yukon Sports
- 0:23Network. First Gino show is next Friday, ahead of the hockey game at
- 0:28Vermonths, So we'll have coach and hopefully a player. Is it at the
- 0:32restaurant or no? No, no, no no. Some of them are
- 0:35recorded. I don't think the first one is till after the New year.
- 0:39I think we're gonna do like three or four from there. Yeah. Good,
- 0:42Yeah. Sarah Daris sets up the schedule. She determines what's what's too.
- 0:48Hey, Colin did a pretty good job. Hey, you guys are
- 0:51easy. You guys are easy to deal with, all right. One question
- 0:54from a listener. This is from Matthew and it's kind of what we been
- 0:56talking about here. During a game, how do you keep your teams confidence
- 1:00and positivity high even when things might not be going your way. Yeah,
- 1:06it's difficult. I think you know, it's a cliche and you hear it
- 1:10all the time that you just have to really focus on the process and not
- 1:15so much the result, even though at the end of the day you judged
- 1:19on your results. But you have to really stay strong to what you're trying
- 1:26to accomplish and how you're playing. And as I said, I don't think
- 1:29we've played poorly. Maybe the first game of the year, I don't know
- 1:33how well we played, like I'm not sure we played a real tight game
- 1:38like we're used to. And what I mean by that is we're not turning
- 1:42pucks over, we're not giving up odd man rushers. And I thought we
- 1:46gave up a few and had some really poor turnovers in the neutral zone on
- 1:49that first game in the year, and sometimes that's to be expected because you
- 1:53just haven't played. But since then, I thought, we've played, you
- 1:57know, really well, just about in every game, and we've played five
- 2:00of six of them on the road, and I've been happy with our effort
- 2:06and I've been happy with what we're trying to accomplish. We've just really struggled
- 2:08scoring goals. So you have to keep telling your team you're doing the right
- 2:12thing, stay with it, you know, be strong. Like you said
- 2:15earlier that the damn is going to break at some point, and it did
- 2:20on Saturday. I gave you guys a ration of garbage on the air on
- 2:24the football broadcast, like sure, I leave and you guys score. This
- 2:28is a true fact. In the three games that have not been on the
- 2:30radio, you've scored twelve goals. In the three games that have been on
- 2:34the radio, you have scored twice. So we're not doing radio this Friday.
- 2:38We're playing a little anyways, and goals are hard to come by in
- 2:40that series anyways. So I'm not taking the blame for that, all right.
- 2:46So maybe you know three is the threes. If you get three on
- 2:49Friday, you're good. Okay, you should be right, we know,
- 2:53just I know. Yeah, all right, Let's talk about some of the
- 2:54line changes that you made on Saturday. Let's start first, Chase, Samu
- 2:59and Jake were shared Rashard has scored in five of his six games so far
- 3:02at least a point he's been productive. But Chas and Sam who seemed like
- 3:06to be a pretty good, pretty good tandem, particularly with their size.
- 3:10Yeah, you know, actually those changes were made Friday going into the third
- 3:15period. We tried to mix some things up, and we played so well
- 3:19going into the third period on Friday that decided to stay with those for Saturday,
- 3:23and it seemed to work pretty well. You know. In talking with
- 3:27Jake, I interviewed him for the intermissions came up after practice on Wednesday.
- 3:31You can see the sense the hockey IQ just from talking to him. Because
- 3:37his dad was a GM in Florida with some of the junior hockey programs down
- 3:40there, and he's been a rinker at his whole life. Well that makes
- 3:43sense to get some of that IQ hockey IQ. Oh yeah, he you
- 3:46know, and sometimes you just it's not anything you really teach. Like.
- 3:51I don't think anybody taught Larry Bird his basketball IQ, right. I think
- 3:55sometimes you're just blessed and born with that. But he's only works at his
- 4:00game. He's on the ice all the time. I see it coming in
- 4:03the morning and he's out there at seven thirty eight o'clock in the morning working
- 4:06on different things. And after practice he's one of the last guys off all
- 4:11the time. He just he truly is a rink rat and just loves everything
- 4:15about the sport and everything that goes into being a great player. What about
- 4:19Samu now his first full year. I mean, yeah, he played a
- 4:23pretty good chunk of all last year, but he came in and boom,
- 4:25you're playing right away because kemean with the late October right about this time last
- 4:30year. Yeah, yeah, and now he's certainly comfortable and you can see
- 4:33the way he's playing. But he's a physical force and he hasn't even you
- 4:39know, maybe he's scratched the surface, but his ceiling is certainly a lot
- 4:44higher. He's going to continue to improve and get better and better as he
- 4:46stays with us. You move Matt to the wing with Hudson. Obviously he
- 4:50played with Hudson a lot last year. The other side was Pierson, a
- 4:56kid from Yale. Jake Percival now on that line, but I don't know,
- 4:59there's wings seemed like a better fit for Matt right now. I don't
- 5:01know if that's the case. It's just it was just that he had gone
- 5:05a few games without scoring, and I knew that he and Huddy had some
- 5:09success together and when he scored, when that line scored, I think they
- 5:13got two goals for US at Colgate to tie that game up, and Huddy
- 5:17had moved with Matt and Rashard. So I was just trying to, you
- 5:21know, put them back together because I know that they have played well together.
- 5:26Seem like, talking with Ryan Mashie, a big weight was lifted off
- 5:29his shoulders when he got the first one. It was a garbage goal,
- 5:31but you know, you get a lot of those garbage goals, but it
- 5:34seemed like a big weight was lifted on him. Just talking to him today,
- 5:38Yeah, I'm sure it was. He's been you know, Justin Pearson
- 5:41went through the same thing last year. I think he went six or seven
- 5:43games without a goal and when he finally did, it broke through. And
- 5:47you know, but he's been playing really well, Ryan, He's been finishing
- 5:50checks, he's been hard. He's been the power forward that we envisioned when
- 5:55he came here. Is this team more physical? Have the potential to be
- 5:59more physical than the team him last year with some of the makeup that you
- 6:01have with Chase and Nick. Yeah, Nick, he didn't even play this
- 6:05weekend. But yeah, I think you know, Ryan's physical, Tabor's physical,
- 6:11Tristan Frasier obviously, Nick Copone is, and Chases and Sam who can
- 6:15play a physical game if he has to. You know, Maddy Wood's not
- 6:20known as a real physical player, but he is. He's big and strong,
- 6:24and he's on pucks and it's hard to get it from him. So
- 6:27just because he might not hit guys like Chase and Nick do, he's still
- 6:30a physical player. He kind of reminds me, at least from a puck
- 6:34possession standpoint, because he's big. I mean, he's not Yack him Connolly
- 6:39size wise, but he still seems to use his body pretty well. He
- 6:44does, and he's learning, you know, every day, how to use
- 6:47it even a little bit better and how more efficient. So once he masters
- 6:53that, I think he'll be a really tough kid. He's tough now to
- 6:56handle. It's even gonna be tougher for him. And he's still eighteen,
- 7:00right, yeah, he was not nineteen, I don't think till February or
- 7:02so. And then you mentioned Tabor and Tristan. Which one is the Swiss
- 7:06Army knife Taber or Tristan that you've referred to in the past. Well,
- 7:10Tabor can be, but Tristan's playing great hockey for us right now, and
- 7:13he can play the wing or center like. It's nice having those two on
- 7:16the line because they both can take face offs, especially on their backhand,
- 7:19you know, so they're a lot stronger on your backhand. So if we're
- 7:23on the right dot and the defense of his own, Tristan will take it,
- 7:26and if we're on the left dot, Taber will take it. Jake
- 7:29Black has given you some good minutes too. Yeah, he played pretty well
- 7:31on Saturday. I thought he gave us some pretty good minutes. And you
- 7:36know we're going to need that from him because he has some offensive potential and
- 7:40when you're not scoring goals consistently, you need guys who have that offensive potential
- 7:46and who can create off the rush and snipe a goal by a goaltender,
- 7:49and he certainly has that ability from a puck movement standpoint, particularly on the
- 7:53special teams. Mike, what have you seen? I know this, You
- 7:57know, the production of the of the power play has not been what you
- 8:00hoped it would be. But did you even tweak that a little bit too?
- 8:01As far as personnel goes, not necessarily. I think the power play.
- 8:07Our penalty kill has been very good. Our power play has been slow,
- 8:11and it was slow last year getting out of the gate, and I'm
- 8:13not quite sure why, because we have some pretty good players and some good
- 8:18talent there. I think we probably got to move the puck a little quicker
- 8:20and we got to get more volume to the net, and that's something that
- 8:24I think we'll continue to focus on. Do you have a point where even
- 8:26guys are trying to do too much? Maybe? I think that. Again,
- 8:30that's another area where you press, you know, and it's hard because
- 8:33great power plays fail seven out of ten times. Yeah, it is.
- 8:37You know, it's sometimes even more. You know, if you have a
- 8:41twenty five percent power play, that's fantastic, and so that means you're failing
- 8:46seventy five percent of the time. So the big thing for us is to
- 8:50make sure that we're not losing momentum off our power play. You know,
- 8:54the other team Ice is a puck and then crowd starts getting into it because
- 8:58they're out working your power play. That's what really hurts. When you're in
- 9:01there zone the whole time and you're throwing bucks at the net and the goalie
- 9:03might be making some saves or you hit a post and that's going to happen,
- 9:07but at least you don't lose momentum, you know, off your power
- 9:09play. So that's something that we really focus on. You know. I
- 9:13enjoyed the student section at Union. They don't have stands behind the netminders,
- 9:18so we had the student sections of my right. That was a fun little
- 9:20place it was. I mean, I didn't notice it as much. You
- 9:24get so locked into the game, but yeah, the rink hasn't changed much
- 9:28since when I played there in the late eighties, so it's very similar.
- 9:33You know. Ben Darnell, my boss at our flagship, was trying to
- 9:37pronounce Boden one day and I said, that's where cav win. He goes,
- 9:39n I go, Yeah, you played football and hockey, Yeah I
- 9:43did so yep, So all right, well what's that you're going to say?
- 9:46No, it's a union used to be in the league. The trip
- 9:48used to be Hamilton Union. They used to be Division three, yeah,
- 9:50back in the eighties, and they went to two Frozen fours and actually won
- 9:54one. I know, it's incredible. Who are some of the guys on
- 9:56the team that won in fourteen. You know everybody, this kid got the
- 10:01spear. Shane got the spear, who was excellent defenceman. And then they
- 10:05had the defenseman body I think who went to the Rangers. I don't know
- 10:09if Daniel Carr was on that team. They had some really good players.
- 10:13We actually that was my first year at Yukon. We tied him at the
- 10:16freightest to two that year. Okay, and didn't you beat him the next
- 10:20year? We did? Yeah, we did, remember so we mentioned Bridgeport
- 10:24in the Christmas tournament. Okay, very good. All right, we're here
- 10:26with Mike Kavanaugh. A little later we'll hear from Ryan Mashey and defenseman Thomas
- 10:30Sineo. We'll come back with more with Mike Kavanaugh, The Yukon Hockey Coaches
- 10:33Show live from Bear Smoke House Barbecue in a moment here on Learfield
