Transcript
- 0:00You asked, I answer today we're doing again our monthly Q and AI
- 0:05went through the September comments on YouTube and the
- 0:07podcast and I picked out the top 10 questions and I'm answering
- 0:11them right here. These aren't just surface level
- 0:14questions. We're talking about eyes that
- 0:16won't stay open, swallowing problems, weird pains, cramps,
- 0:20fatigue, and even whether too much sleep is from the meds.
- 0:24And stick around because this is going to be real raw.
- 0:28It's sometimes a little funny at the very end.
- 0:30I'll share today's Bryce ISM, one that sums up why I love
- 0:33doing these Q&A episodes so much.
- 0:37Welcome to Living with Parkinson's, The Good, the bad.
- 0:40And the reality? Real talk, real life, real
- 0:44community with Bryce Perry. Let's begin.
- 0:50Hey everyone, welcome back. If you're new here, I'm Bryce
- 0:52and this is living with Parkinson's, The good, the bad
- 0:55and the reality around here. We don't just talk about
- 0:57Parkinson's. We live it.
- 0:59We laugh about it and when we can or laugh at when we can and
- 1:02we try to figure it out together.
- 1:04And to my regular viewers memberships, you know, inner
- 1:08circle, this whole episode is built from your questions.
- 1:12So if you don't already comment, make this month the month you
- 1:16start to do it. I read and reply to every single
- 1:19comment and drop a question below for October's Q&A and I
- 1:24might be reading your name next time out loud on the next one.
- 1:27OK, so let's get into our first question now.
- 1:29This one came from at Lion and Lamb 4754.
- 1:34Who asked, does anyone else have trouble keeping their eyes open?
- 1:38My eyes closed even when I'm not tired and I don't realize that
- 1:41they're even closed. Does anybody else have this
- 1:43problem? Well, Lion and Lamb, thank you
- 1:46for this question. And that's such a really, it's a
- 1:48great question. And yes, this is a real thing.
- 1:51And it's called eyelid apraxia. Basically the signal from the
- 1:55brain to the eyelids doesn't fire, right?
- 1:58Your eyes close even when you want them to open.
- 2:02You know, I've had a few moments where Carmen looks, looks at me
- 2:05across the room and says like, are you asleep?
- 2:06And I'm like, no, just sitting here, my eyes are shut mid
- 2:10conversation. Not great for convincing people
- 2:13that you're listening, but here's the science behind it.
- 2:16Parkinson's can affect the muscles that open and close your
- 2:19eyelids, and sometimes Botox injections help relax those
- 2:22muscles. Sunglasses also help in bright
- 2:25light. That's really exciting, isn't
- 2:27it? Big, big brain tip there.
- 2:29My tip, don't ignore it. Talk to your neurologist and let
- 2:33the people around you know it's a symptom and you're not being
- 2:36rude. OK, let's do a comment check if
- 2:38that has happened to you. Type me too below my me too in
- 2:42the comments if that's happened to you.
- 2:45OK, moving along. The next one is from at Mccarran
- 2:48who wrote I choke on saliva, water and pills.
- 2:51Is this another brain to body signal misfire?
- 2:55Well, Mccarran, thank you for this.
- 2:57And yes, it is a common problem called dysphyxia.
- 3:01Dysphyxia, Parkinson's can weaken or slow the muscles that
- 3:05help you swallow. So food and liquid don't always
- 3:07go down the right way, you know? Once I tried to swallow water
- 3:11and it shot right back out my nose, right?
- 3:13Kind of gross. Carmen laughed and I coughed for
- 3:15like 10 minutes and it turned into one of those moments where
- 3:18you laugh and you cry all at the same time.
- 3:22Tips. Well, work with a speech
- 3:24therapist who specializes in swallowing.
- 3:27They can teach you safe swallowing techniques.
- 3:29Take smaller bites, tuck your chin in when you swallow, and
- 3:33don't be afraid to thicken your liquids if it keeps you safe.
- 3:37Pills. Ask your pharmacist if they can
- 3:39split or be crushed or even given in liquid form.
- 3:44And if you ever had that awful cough choke combo back.
- 3:48Mccarran up in the comments said been there, been there, been
- 3:51there. OK, moving along.
- 3:54This one is from Knoll LIG 4152 who said you're all ahead,
- 4:01you're all thinking ahead for everything.
- 4:02How do you do it? Well, thank you.
- 4:06Another great question. The truth is, Parkinson's forces
- 4:09you to think ahead. I can't just wing it anymore.
- 4:13For example, if I've got a meeting or a road trip, I have
- 4:16to plan my meds, my snacks, even bathroom stops.
- 4:19Carmen has this just in case. Bag, meds, tissue, water, even
- 4:23snacks. It's like it's like being a Mary
- 4:26Poppins for Parkinson's tips. Keep a small kit with a kit with
- 4:30meds, water, and maybe even a protein bar.
- 4:33Build habits like always keep extra meds in your car or or
- 4:37your spouse's purse or your partner's purse.
- 4:39And don't be afraid to cancel or reschedule if your body just
- 4:42says not today. Now, if Parkinson's has turned
- 4:47you into a planner, type planner in the comments.
- 4:51And if you got a hack for planning ahead, share it in the
- 4:53comments so we can all steal it. OK, well here's a practical
- 4:57question from at Analga 5932 and Analga Analga 5932 who said
- 5:07looking for the tracker you mentioned.
- 5:09Oh my God, and thank you. If you're talking about the
- 5:12fatigue tracker I showed in the video, fatigue is one of the
- 5:14hardest things to explain because people can't see it.
- 5:18I built that tracker to help show the ups and downs on paper
- 5:22and people can see that one day I'm drained by noon, another day
- 5:25I'm making it till dinner. And it makes the invisible
- 5:28visible. So tips?
- 5:30I track my energy on a one to 10 scale a few times a day.
- 5:35Share it with your family or your friends or with your care
- 5:37team and it helps them understand why you have to
- 5:40cancel plans or why you need rest.
- 5:41And yes, I'll link the tracker in the description here so you
- 5:45can grab it because I totally forgot it in one of the videos I
- 5:47talked about it. And if you struggle with
- 5:50fatigue, type in always tired in the comments.
- 5:52Please see how many? Let's see how many of us are
- 5:55nodding along. Get it nodding along.
- 5:58OK anyway, next question, and this one is from new life.
- 6:03New life puppets six O 7. Who said I love the names?
- 6:06I love you guys, come with the great names, new life puppets.
- 6:08Anyway, I whistle words and sometimes use the wrong ones.
- 6:12Do you have something on that? Yes, the Sterthea and sometimes
- 6:18Apthea. Apthea, apstasia, dystarsia and
- 6:24apstasia Parkinson's affecting your speech and your word
- 6:26finding. Now one time I asked Carmen for
- 6:29a fork and instead I asked for a flashlight.
- 6:32She just looked at me and said well are you eating dinner or do
- 6:34you want to go camping or are we eating in the dark?
- 6:36What do you need the flashlight for?
- 6:37Ha ha ha. Well, science says this.
- 6:40Parkinson's affects the muscles that help you form words and the
- 6:43brain circuits that find the right one.
- 6:47So tips speech therapy. It helps.
- 6:49It helps especially programs like SVSLSVT loud practice
- 6:54speaking slowly and clearly. I'm going to I need to take my
- 6:57own lesson here, right? And don't be afraid to laugh
- 6:59when it comes out wrong. It's better than just getting
- 7:02embarrassed. OK, so let's hear it in the
- 7:06comments. What's the funniest word mix up
- 7:08you've had? Share it so we can all get a
- 7:11laugh. OK, moving along.
- 7:14This one's powerful. Now, this was Christine Miller,
- 7:172238. Who wrote this?
- 7:19I had random pains. Diagnosed as a fibromyalgia,
- 7:24Right? And I can't help but wonder if
- 7:26it was really Parkinson's. Well, Christine, thank you for
- 7:29that. That's such a real question.
- 7:31Like pain can show up years before diagnosis and sometimes
- 7:34it gets mislabeled as something else.
- 7:37I had shoulder pain that I thought was a pulled muscle.
- 7:39Looking back, maybe it was even early Parkinson's sign.
- 7:44There is a test for that though, and you can get it done.
- 7:46It's one of the things that they they actually ruled out
- 7:49fibromyalgia from me by taking what I call the shock test.
- 7:53It's not a fun test, but there is a test that you can get, you
- 7:56can get and you can check it out.
- 7:58OK. And and tips like just don't.
- 8:00Here's a tip for this one. Don't settle for it's just this.
- 8:04If it doesn't feel right, keep a symptom diary, push for answers.
- 8:09And if you're still in that wandering wondering phase, drop
- 8:12still wondering in the comments if you have something that
- 8:15you're not sure if it's Parkinson's or something else.
- 8:17The bottom line on this one, though, is talk to your doctor
- 8:20if there's a test that they can do to see if they can rule
- 8:23something out. That way you can get the best
- 8:25treatment for what it really is because if it's not due with
- 8:28your Parkinson's, then maybe there is something else you can
- 8:30do, whether it be physical therapy or some other type of
- 8:33medication that can help with that.
- 8:35Make sure you talk to your doctor.
- 8:37And if you didn't already and you're wondering if you have
- 8:39fibromyalgia, ask for the test. There is one.
- 8:43All right, here's another pain related question.
- 8:45This one came from Southwest Rush Gary.
- 8:48So like Southwest Rush Gary, who wrote weird pain in my palms and
- 8:52thighs plus Tremors and cog Wheeling, but no diagnosis yet.
- 8:56What do you think? Well, Gary, thank you for
- 8:59trusting me with this. Now, I can't diagnose, but
- 9:02here's what I can say. Unusual pain plus tremors and
- 9:05cog Wheeling is worth getting checked by a movement or
- 9:08disorder specialist. It really is.
- 9:11Here's my tip for you though, Write it down.
- 9:13Patterns matter. When it started, when it
- 9:15started, what triggered it, what makes it better and what makes
- 9:18it worse. That helps doctors piece it
- 9:21together. And Gary, I hope you push, keep
- 9:23pushing for those answers. And if you've ever been stuck in
- 9:26that, is this Parkinson's or not stage in the comments, How about
- 9:30waiting? Waiting.
- 9:32OK, here's the surprising one from at Hogan K9 B, who asked
- 9:36this Haven't you become extra sensitive to smells again?
- 9:41Now most people lose their smell, right?
- 9:43Their sense of smell with Parkinson's.
- 9:45Me, I've never lost mine yet. And sometimes it feels stronger.
- 9:49You know, there are days when Carmen's perfume hits me like a
- 9:52freight train. I love it.
- 9:54But wow. And and I've walked into a room
- 9:56and said, like, what smells funny when no one else even
- 9:59notices? Here's some tips.
- 10:02Pay attention to changes in your senses.
- 10:04They can be early clues and let your doctors know, even if it
- 10:07seems minor. All right, let's vote in the
- 10:10comments type. Lost it if you lost your smell,
- 10:14right, or super nose if it feels stronger.
- 10:17And let's see which champ, which camp wins.
- 10:21OK, lost it if you lost your sense of smell or super nose if
- 10:25it feels stronger. All right, here's the next one.
- 10:28This one is from Kirk Messick 1943, who asked.
- 10:32Pretty severe cramps on my calves, feet, and occasionally
- 10:34my abdomen, most of the time when my legs are elevated.
- 10:38Is anybody else having these? Well, Kirk, simple answer, yes,
- 10:42you're not alone. Cramps and and dystonia are
- 10:45common in Parkinson's. I've had calf cramps at night so
- 10:49bad that I thought I tore something.
- 10:51Carmen once found me halfway out of bed clutching my leg like I'd
- 10:54just run a marathon. So it's very, very common.
- 10:57Here's some tips to, to, to battle it.
- 11:00Stay hydrated, stretch before bed, try magnesium, the spray,
- 11:04if your doctor's OK with it. And, and most of them are, and
- 11:07there's nothing wrong with it. And talk to your neurologist.
- 11:11Here we go about whether medication timing can play a
- 11:13role. So very, very common, Kirk.
- 11:17And if you've had those middle of night cramps comment, Ouch,
- 11:21let's build a wall of vouchers together and then Kurt will know
- 11:24that he's not alone in that feeling.
- 11:26OK, here's our last one for September.
- 11:30And this one is from there at Sue Lee, 63 O four, who asked,
- 11:34Partner has Parkinson's. So much sleeping.
- 11:37Is it the pills? OK, Sue, thank you for asking
- 11:42this and thank you for caring enough to ask.
- 11:44Sleep changes are very common in Parkinson's.
- 11:47And yes, some medications do make it worse.
- 11:50I've I've dozed off sitting straight up on the couch.
- 11:53And Carmen has photographic evidence unfortunately.
- 11:56So some of the things you can do is keep track of your sleep
- 11:59patterns. If it's constant and extreme,
- 12:01talk to your doctor and sometimes a Med adjustment will
- 12:04just help. That and for care partners, give
- 12:07yourself grace. It's hard when your partner
- 12:09seems like they're always sleeping and so you just have to
- 12:12find give yourself grace and give them grace.
- 12:15And here's my ask if you're a care partner watching type care
- 12:17partner in the comments. Let's recognize you because you
- 12:20play such an important role and you deserve a great big thank
- 12:22you for that. You see what I mean?
- 12:25These questions are gold. They prove that we're all just
- 12:28trying to figure this out all together as we go.
- 12:30You know what I do have? I do have a price system for you
- 12:33on this one. With Parkinson's, the questions
- 12:36never stop, but neither do the answers.
- 12:39Not if we just keep talking about them together.
- 12:43There you go. Now it's your turn.
- 12:45Which of these 10 questions hits home for you?
- 12:47And what do you want answered in October's Q&A?
- 12:51Drop it in the comments. You never know, I might be
- 12:53reading your name out loud next month.
- 12:56All right, hit subscribe if you haven't already, because this is
- 12:58just the beginning. And if you're ready to go
- 13:01deeper, check out the inner circle, the links in the
- 13:03description below. And that's where we share our
- 13:05winds or wobbles and everything in between.
- 13:07And until next time, You keep showing up, you keep being real,
- 13:13and you keep doing life today.
