Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: What's going on Hurdler's Emily a body here. I feel
- 0:05Speaker 1: like it's been forever since the last episode, but in reality,
- 0:09Speaker 1: it's just been a couple of really crazy weeks. I
- 0:13Speaker 1: got back from Los Angeles Thursday after recording podcasts with
- 0:16Speaker 1: a bunch of outstanding guests, and I can't even convey
- 0:20Speaker 1: to you how amped I am about all of it.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I definitely am excited to share some rad content with
- 0:26Speaker 1: you guys over the next few months, and I'm feeling
- 0:28Speaker 1: so crazy inspired and really hopeful. And I know I
- 0:31Speaker 1: say this all the time, but a lot of these
- 0:34Speaker 1: episodes and the guest connections that I got out in
- 0:36Speaker 1: LA were made possible through friends or even social media.
- 0:40Speaker 1: So please, if you know someone with a great Hurdle
- 0:43Speaker 1: moment story, take the time to email me Emily at
- 0:46Speaker 1: Hurdle dot us. Enough about me, though, let's talk about
- 0:50Speaker 1: Gunner Peterson. I totally geeked out, like total understatement when
- 0:54Speaker 1: Gunnar made the time for me in his crazy schedule
- 0:57Speaker 1: while visiting New York earlier this month for the Pro collabs.
- 1:01Speaker 1: This guy is a big deal, and he made fun
- 1:04Speaker 1: of me for saying it that way in the episode
- 1:06Speaker 1: because I quote unquote sounded like his mom, but it's true. Seriously,
- 1:10Speaker 1: you've probably heard of him for his work with a
- 1:13Speaker 1: list clients past and president, including Chloe Kardashi and Jennifer Lopez, Angelina, Jolie,
- 1:18Speaker 1: Hugh Jackman. I feel like this list is never ending.
- 1:22Speaker 1: He's also the director of Strength and Endurance for the
- 1:24Speaker 1: Lakers and has an unbelievable gym located in Beverly Hills.
- 1:29Speaker 1: We talk about a lot of things in this episode,
- 1:32Speaker 1: like how he got started in the health and fitness
- 1:34Speaker 1: industry on a whim after college, and how taking some
- 1:36Speaker 1: time for himself in the gym back after his divorce
- 1:39Speaker 1: helped him get through some tough times. Also what it's
- 1:42Speaker 1: like to be a father of four, including a two
- 1:45Speaker 1: and a half year old that's constantly on the move.
- 1:48Speaker 1: He also shares a bunch of super smart career advice
- 1:51Speaker 1: he received from none other than Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I told you this guy is the man. I also
- 1:58Speaker 1: want to say, I'm always thinking about how I can
- 2:00Speaker 1: make this better for you guys. I want to know
- 2:03Speaker 1: what you want from me, what you want from Hurdle.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Do you want more content? Do you want more social connection.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Do you want more Q and A opportunities with the
- 2:11Speaker 1: guests or maybe in person panels? And on that note,
- 2:14Speaker 1: I can confidently say that the next Hurdle Live will
- 2:17Speaker 1: be in September, so stay tuned for updates on that. Anyway,
- 2:21Speaker 1: let me know I want to connect with you. I
- 2:24Speaker 1: can't say that enough. Emily at Hurdle dot Us, hit
- 2:27Speaker 1: me up, at Hurdle podcast at Emily Abody hit me up.
- 2:31Speaker 2: And that's it.
- 2:32Speaker 1: With that, Let's get to hurdling today. I'm sitting here
- 2:51Speaker 1: with Gunnar Peterson. He is kind of a big deal,
- 2:54Speaker 1: arguably the biggest trainer to the stars. He's also the
- 2:59Speaker 1: director of Strength and Endurance for the Lakers. He has
- 3:02Speaker 1: worked out with a ton of people, the Kardashians, Matthew McConaughey,
- 3:07Speaker 1: The Rock, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Nick Lache I feel
- 3:10Speaker 1: like this could go on forever.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Well, let's be clear. First of all, I'm a big deal,
- 3:14Speaker 2: sound like my mom and Dwayne the Rock. He's been
- 3:20Speaker 2: in my gym. He trains himself. I don't ever want
- 3:22Speaker 2: to be one of those guys just so I trained him.
- 3:24Speaker 2: He trains himself. He does his own thing. You know,
- 3:27Speaker 2: it would just be my role would be, hey, DJ,
- 3:31Speaker 2: you want to towel. That's about it. He does his
- 3:34Speaker 2: own thing in the JIM. I do not train him,
- 3:37Speaker 2: let's be clear.
- 3:37Speaker 1: But you guys are buds.
- 3:39Speaker 2: But you know, Hollywood, Hollywood, you know that's hard to say.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I think he's the man. I think what he's done
- 3:46Speaker 2: in this industry is phenomenal. Hats off to him and
- 3:49Speaker 2: way to raise the bar every day. I just look,
- 3:53Speaker 2: the guy's tireless, and I mean, it's just I think
- 3:56Speaker 2: he does great stuff and I think he sets a
- 3:58Speaker 2: great example well.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Also been featured in what feels like every publication from
- 4:03Speaker 1: the Wall Street Journal to People magazine. It's a lot.
- 4:06Speaker 1: It's pretty impressive.
- 4:08Speaker 2: I've just outlasted people, right, And that's how I was
- 4:11Speaker 2: in the gym this morning at the hotel and I'm
- 4:14Speaker 2: looking at my phone and I said, is it like
- 4:18Speaker 2: two am in La? This is funny. So I texted
- 4:20Speaker 2: the kid to normally chains with me at five and
- 4:22Speaker 2: I said, wake up, you little wuss. And I think,
- 4:27Speaker 2: you know, there's something about that routine of get up,
- 4:30Speaker 2: get after it, and then get out, and it just
- 4:33Speaker 2: sets the tone for your day. And then you look
- 4:36Speaker 2: back and that's been a month, and it's been a year,
- 4:37Speaker 2: and then it's been ten years it's been and you go, wow,
- 4:41Speaker 2: So am I doing the right thing by sticking with it.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It's funny. It's one of the only professions where people say, hey,
- 4:47Speaker 2: still doing that training thing? Because you I mean, yeah,
- 4:51Speaker 2: what else might this is what I do. It's a career,
- 4:53Speaker 2: it's not a job.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And there's I loved it. Yesterday on the phone you
- 4:56Speaker 1: said you would never ask a lawyer. Are you still
- 4:58Speaker 1: doing that lawyering thing?
- 5:00Speaker 2: Right day? Bob? You're still in trial this week, so
- 5:03Speaker 2: you still mess with that lost stuff. It's just it's
- 5:05Speaker 2: not a conversation here. You don't You don't say to
- 5:08Speaker 2: your contractor, hey Joey, you're still doing contracting. What else
- 5:11Speaker 2: is he doing? Yes, that's what he does.
- 5:14Speaker 1: I love it.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny.
- 5:15Speaker 1: We have a lot of ground to cover here. I
- 5:17Speaker 1: find it interesting because I think there are so many takeaways.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I think that you can give my audience because of
- 5:24Speaker 1: your wealth of knowledge in this industry and so knowledge tennis.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Knowledge just knowledge that you accumulate by being somewhere for
- 5:33Speaker 2: periods of time. You start to go, oh, I know
- 5:35Speaker 2: how to do that. Yeah, it's like things you do
- 5:38Speaker 2: in your car. You just jump in and you know.
- 5:40Speaker 2: But if somebody else drove your car, they might not
- 5:42Speaker 2: know how to do also, but you've been in that
- 5:43Speaker 2: car for so long. You know where all the buttons are,
- 5:46Speaker 2: you know where the hazards are, you know how to
- 5:48Speaker 2: pop the trunk, you know where the song that you
- 5:50Speaker 2: just know because it's because it's the world that you
- 5:52Speaker 2: live in. And that's how I feel about I mean,
- 5:55Speaker 2: I wouldn't claim to be the in the fitness world up,
- 5:58Speaker 2: but definitely fitness in my zip code, I've got this.
- 6:01Speaker 1: I love that you're a little humble about that. I
- 6:04Speaker 1: think that's great.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Humble about it. I'm real about it. Said, that's faul humility.
- 6:08Speaker 2: First of all, you can't spell foe. Second, well, it's not,
- 6:11Speaker 2: it's not. It's real. You can't claim to know. Look,
- 6:14Speaker 2: I do a branding presentation for trainers, and I'm smart
- 6:17Speaker 2: enough to know what I don't know. And I'm smart
- 6:20Speaker 2: enough to know that my branding presentation what I know
- 6:24Speaker 2: about the fitness world doesn't translate to everyone. I can't
- 6:27Speaker 2: necessarily give that speech with any with any thrust with
- 6:32Speaker 2: any validity, with any takeaways to people in different markets.
- 6:35Speaker 2: But if you're in the nine o two one zero,
- 6:37Speaker 2: you could probably take something away from.
- 6:39Speaker 1: This, right right, Okay, so obviously you didn't just build this.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I should have brought a water in here. So actually
- 6:46Speaker 2: I should have brought a Propel because I could hydrate
- 6:50Speaker 2: electrolytes would help.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Me in Well, that's what you're in town. You're in
- 6:53Speaker 1: town to work with them this weekend, right.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah, of course I am. I go anywhere that Propell
- 6:58Speaker 2: wants me to go to. It's a quality it's quality products,
- 7:01Speaker 2: quality company and quality people, and I try to keep
- 7:04Speaker 2: everything top tier quality.
- 7:06Speaker 1: What are you and Propel doing this weekend.
- 7:08Speaker 2: We're doing a fitness collab and they do them in
- 7:11Speaker 2: the early They started in the early part of the
- 7:14Speaker 2: summer and they go through the summer and it's great.
- 7:16Speaker 2: It's a great exchange of information. It's a great way
- 7:18Speaker 2: for people to share. I think it's what the fitness
- 7:20Speaker 2: industry should be about. It should be about building up
- 7:24Speaker 2: your peers, people who have different fitness disciplines and different
- 7:28Speaker 2: fitness takeaways, and the people who pause and take the
- 7:32Speaker 2: time to write negative stuff on people's post. I just
- 7:37Speaker 2: think what you weren't held enough as a baby? Why
- 7:42Speaker 2: would you do that? How do you look at a post?
- 7:44Speaker 2: And by the way, how dare you criticize someone's form.
- 7:48Speaker 2: You're taking something out of context. You're taking something that's
- 7:50Speaker 2: a that's a one off slide, even if it's a video.
- 7:54Speaker 2: You don't know how they got to that point or
- 7:56Speaker 2: why they may perform that that way. I mean, I
- 8:00Speaker 2: don't know that the negative stuff is so I see
- 8:03Speaker 2: a lot of it. I actually asked, I said, do
- 8:05Speaker 2: you guys get that in your in your hydration beverages,
- 8:10Speaker 2: counterparts and the and the competition. Do people just bash
- 8:13Speaker 2: you or is it? Are those you know, head to
- 8:15Speaker 2: head comparisons kind of going nowadays and people just talk
- 8:17Speaker 2: about their own stuff. And in fitness, I see a
- 8:20Speaker 2: lot of bashing. And I think the propelled collabse is
- 8:24Speaker 2: the other side of that, which is so great and
- 8:27Speaker 2: it's positive. And that's a long answer to your question.
- 8:31Speaker 1: But I like you.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I like being part of that. I have no you know,
- 8:33Speaker 2: I'm not trying to. I would never knock anybody else.
- 8:35Speaker 2: If you're doing that, that's your thing.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Yeah, totally, And I think what's great about what Propels
- 8:41Speaker 1: doing with the collabs is that they're making fitness pretty
- 8:44Speaker 1: accessible for a wide group of people. You know, in
- 8:47Speaker 1: our day and age, where fitness classes one offs can
- 8:50Speaker 1: cost anywhere upward to fifty dollars, and then obviously working
- 8:53Speaker 1: with the personal trainer so much more than that. It's
- 8:56Speaker 1: great to put together a big environment where you can
- 8:58Speaker 1: get a lot of people together.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I know a guy here in New York City and
- 9:02Speaker 2: this is going back. I've been in this for I've
- 9:04Speaker 2: done this for twenty nine years. I know a guy
- 9:08Speaker 2: in New York City who did this twenty years ago,
- 9:12Speaker 2: and I think he was four hundred or four hundred
- 9:14Speaker 2: and fifty dollars an hour, and somebody was not bragging,
- 9:17Speaker 2: but they were definitely excitedly telling me how they went
- 9:21Speaker 2: to this guy. And I said, wow. At some point,
- 9:25Speaker 2: I think if your trainer costs more than your legal counsel,
- 9:31Speaker 2: you should you should pause and think about that.
- 9:35Speaker 1: It's the world we live in, though, don't you think
- 9:37Speaker 1: at this twenty years ago that look, I mean, that's insane.
- 9:40Speaker 2: That's in the CUDFS right. If I say to you,
- 9:42Speaker 2: would you borrow buy a car for a million dollars
- 9:46Speaker 2: and it's a no. And then I say what about
- 9:47Speaker 2: halfway dollars? And it's a no. And then I say
- 9:49Speaker 2: what about two fifty no, one hundred, no? Fifty yeah, eighty.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I don't know. So your number somewhere, your soft spot
- 9:57Speaker 2: somewhere beteen fifty and eighty on a car right or
- 10:00Speaker 2: wherever it is for you. Ye, Other people have different,
- 10:04Speaker 2: different cutoffs, and I don't know. I think it's it's
- 10:07Speaker 2: a perception of value. It's personal value. It's where you
- 10:09Speaker 2: put it. And I wouldn't again, I wouldn't bash right.
- 10:13Speaker 2: If you can afford that and that works for you,
- 10:15Speaker 2: then you should do that every day.
- 10:16Speaker 1: It's also interesting. I was I was in your seat
- 10:19Speaker 1: on a podcast a couple of weeks back, and we
- 10:21Speaker 1: were talking headphones. I did have headphones on. They were
- 10:25Speaker 1: but I'm just so you all know at home, I'm
- 10:27Speaker 1: sitting here wearing headphones and Gunner isn't. And I apologize
- 10:30Speaker 1: to him because I felt like I wasn't giving him
- 10:32Speaker 1: an opportunity.
- 10:33Speaker 2: I feel left out.
- 10:34Speaker 1: That's just not how it works in this booth.
- 10:35Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I well, I was wearing headphones and talking on the
- 10:39Speaker 1: podcast and they asked me what I thought one of
- 10:41Speaker 1: the biggest problems was right now in the fitness industry,
- 10:45Speaker 1: and I said, it's scary that a lot of people
- 10:49Speaker 1: that don't have possibly the right credentials are building these
- 10:53Speaker 1: brands and so many people follow them and the information
- 10:58Speaker 1: they're dealing out on social media exactly is it's scary?
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I see it, and I think, and maybe because
- 11:06Speaker 2: I've lived in this world for so long, I just
- 11:08Speaker 2: literally I just keep scrolling or I look and I think,
- 11:10Speaker 2: is there something I can take away from that. I
- 11:12Speaker 2: don't like where her knee is going on that movement,
- 11:14Speaker 2: but I do like how she combined that movement with
- 11:20Speaker 2: that That's an interesting combination. So I try to find
- 11:23Speaker 2: the you know, I'm not trying to be Pollyanne on this,
- 11:25Speaker 2: but I do look at it and I think, not
- 11:27Speaker 2: for everybody, or maybe she should put a little asterisk
- 11:30Speaker 2: and say, you know, be careful of your knee on this,
- 11:33Speaker 2: watch your ankle stability on this. But but they don't.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Then you go, it's just we process so much information
- 11:39Speaker 2: every day, so many images. You know that hopefully it's
- 11:42Speaker 2: not doing any real harm.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Hopefully, I h I want to backstrack a little bit
- 11:48Speaker 1: because obviously this level of knowledge working with these clients,
- 11:54Speaker 1: it didn't happen overnight. You graduated college in nineteen eighty five. Correct, Correct,
- 12:00Speaker 1: I did my homework, a little bit of it. Anyway,
- 12:02Speaker 1: graduated college in nineteen eighty five with a degree in
- 12:06Speaker 1: physical fitness, psychology, and nutrition.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Oh, French and Spanish, but those were the concentration.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Your majors were really French and Spanish.
- 12:16Speaker 2: So here truth be told. I got a not good
- 12:20Speaker 2: grade in statistics in psychology and I was one credit
- 12:24Speaker 2: short of that as my major. And my this is
- 12:28Speaker 2: too long for your podcast, but i'll tell you. My
- 12:31Speaker 2: counselor said you have to retake that class, and I
- 12:33Speaker 2: said I can. I got that grade with a tutor
- 12:36Speaker 2: and I'm not doing it. And it was statistics, and
- 12:38Speaker 2: I said, it's numbers. I can't. You know, I should
- 12:40Speaker 2: have said I'm going to be a trainer. I'm going
- 12:42Speaker 2: to count on my fingers. And she said, then you
- 12:44Speaker 2: have to you can't, And I said, well, let's change majors.
- 12:47Speaker 2: She goes, you can't do that because you're a junior.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And I said, what am I clothes in? I just
- 12:53Speaker 2: want to graduate. At that point, I wasn't like you know,
- 12:55Speaker 2: a lot of kids, you know, the Doogie houses of
- 12:57Speaker 2: the world, they knew they wanted to be doctors when
- 12:59Speaker 2: they were eight years old. I didn't have that. I
- 13:00Speaker 2: just knew I wanted to graduate and have a degree
- 13:02Speaker 2: and move out into the world and then figure it out.
- 13:06Speaker 1: So I switched majors and you became a.
- 13:09Speaker 2: French and Spanish so it was easy.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 13:12Speaker 2: But I grew up overseas, so I had the languages. Again,
- 13:14Speaker 2: you're a product of your environment, I believe so. And
- 13:18Speaker 2: I liked that I had great professors that I was
- 13:20Speaker 2: at Duke, and I had great professors there, and it
- 13:22Speaker 2: was just such a The whole environment, the whole college.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Experience was a ten for me where overseas.
- 13:27Speaker 2: My parents were in Saudi Arabia and I was in
- 13:29Speaker 2: boarding school in Switzerland.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Wow. Interesting. Okay, graduated from Duke French and Spanish. Interesting
- 13:37Speaker 1: that you didn't pick French or Spanish.
- 13:38Speaker 2: By the way, I was one credit away from both.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Why not bang knock them both out? So you knew
- 13:45Speaker 1: when you graduated.
- 13:46Speaker 3: That you wanted to be in I wanted to graduate, Okay,
- 13:51Speaker 3: at Czech and then I moved down to New Orleans,
- 13:54Speaker 3: and I was on my way out here, but I
- 13:56Speaker 3: sort of sidetracked and stopped in New Orleans with friends
- 13:58Speaker 3: and I loved it, and I was there for two
- 14:00Speaker 3: years and I started an ice.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Business of all things, I business, I know, retail ice delivery,
- 14:07Speaker 2: and I had I had a business there that did well.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And I have so many irrelevant questions, but I'm gonna
- 14:14Speaker 1: let you keep going.
- 14:17Speaker 2: And I realized that for a guy I was making
- 14:22Speaker 2: you know, you think you're making money at that age
- 14:24Speaker 2: and you have cash in your hands, are like, I'm wealthy,
- 14:27Speaker 2: and it's just a great and a fun city. And
- 14:30Speaker 2: I thought, if I stay here, bad things are going
- 14:32Speaker 2: to happen. So I left and I came out to
- 14:35Speaker 2: LA and I did. I came out there for what
- 14:39Speaker 2: I wanted to do was working out and cool people
- 14:42Speaker 2: like great Weather. And then my mom said you have
- 14:45Speaker 2: to get a job. And I started dabbling in the
- 14:49Speaker 2: entertainment industry, production assistant work, just little stuff here and there,
- 14:54Speaker 2: just to keep that life going. And you look down
- 14:56Speaker 2: and you go, WHOA, I'm twenty five, now twenty four,
- 15:00Speaker 2: I can't keep doing this and uh. And I was
- 15:04Speaker 2: working at a management company and working out in the mornings,
- 15:07Speaker 2: and somebody asked me to train them and I did,
- 15:09Speaker 2: and and it just took off. And I was not certified.
- 15:13Speaker 1: I was going to ask you because I know you're
- 15:14Speaker 1: a certified strength and conditioning specialist.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Now, I was not certified at the time. And I
- 15:20Speaker 2: did it for a few months, and I thought I
- 15:22Speaker 2: should probably get certified. And then I looked around at
- 15:25Speaker 2: the field and I thought, if I pushed this, if
- 15:27Speaker 2: I just amassed as much knowledge as I could, if
- 15:30Speaker 2: I just kept knocking out these certifications, I could crush this.
- 15:35Speaker 2: And and I just that's all I did. Sol.
- 15:38Speaker 1: So what did you start to knock out?
- 15:39Speaker 2: Oh? I took any seminar I could I fly to
- 15:43Speaker 2: I'd fly to Arizona, I fly to Chicago, I fly
- 15:45Speaker 2: to Miami, a flight at Orlando, anywhere I could for
- 15:49Speaker 2: a seminar, you know, a day, two day, three day,
- 15:51Speaker 2: and it was you know, one Carlos Santana, Paul check, Vernegham,
- 15:55Speaker 2: Beta Mark Forsteagan. I'd go anywhere and listen to anybody.
- 15:59Speaker 2: And sometimes it was just for the continuing education credits.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Sometimes it was just for the education. Sometimes it was
- 16:05Speaker 2: just to get out for a weekend.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I think something that's interesting. A it's really impressive that
- 16:11Speaker 1: you were willing to travel that kind of way for knowledge.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I know, I think that's awesome, And I think that's
- 16:16Speaker 1: what I was going to say, is I know I
- 16:19Speaker 1: saw some posts on your Instagram feed that you were
- 16:21Speaker 1: at Ideal World.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Yeah, but I go to anything I can fit in.
- 16:26Speaker 2: There are a lot of trainers, I think who think
- 16:27Speaker 2: they're like two steps away from a doctor. Like you're not. Okay,
- 16:31Speaker 2: I mean most of you or not. Some of you
- 16:32Speaker 2: may be, but you're not a doctor. You're a trainer
- 16:35Speaker 2: and there's nothing wrong with that, and you should just
- 16:36Speaker 2: be a great trainer. But look, doctors have to take
- 16:39Speaker 2: seminars in continue education. There are new developments in the field,
- 16:43Speaker 2: there are new understandings, there are new protocols, and that's
- 16:46Speaker 2: the same in our field. And if nothing else, it's
- 16:49Speaker 2: worth taking. It's worth learning about a discipline that you
- 16:54Speaker 2: don't know about because it is a business approaching and
- 16:57Speaker 2: you can take things back and hone your own system,
- 17:00Speaker 2: can try it on yourself, and you can, you know,
- 17:01Speaker 2: make your clients your guinea pigs. There are ways to
- 17:04Speaker 2: do it where you become better and there's an exchange
- 17:06Speaker 2: of information, circle back, segue people. This is what propelled
- 17:11Speaker 2: us right there. There are people who have a CrossFit background.
- 17:15Speaker 2: There people who have a pilate's background, a powerlifting background,
- 17:17Speaker 2: a running background, a dance background. And if you take
- 17:20Speaker 2: a little bit from all these, there are a lot
- 17:22Speaker 2: of great things out there. You don't have to just
- 17:24Speaker 2: you know, paint yourself into a corner. I only do this.
- 17:26Speaker 2: You can learn from all these, and I think you should.
- 17:30Speaker 2: I think you should. I stay open. I mean I've
- 17:32Speaker 2: done I've done everything, pilates, yoga, martial arts. I've spent
- 17:38Speaker 2: time with the powerlifting guys. That's fairly humbling, and dance
- 17:42Speaker 2: that's super humbling. And you just you take away something
- 17:46Speaker 2: from everything and then eventually you find either what works
- 17:48Speaker 2: for you or what works for certain people. Or when
- 17:50Speaker 2: you when you run into a wall with a with
- 17:53Speaker 2: a with a client, you go, wait, hang on, let's
- 17:56Speaker 2: try this, because you've had that experience or you've seen
- 17:59Speaker 2: that demonstrate, and it's great to be able to bring that.
- 18:03Speaker 2: It's great to do the problem solve for people who
- 18:05Speaker 2: don't have the knowledge that you've taken the time to
- 18:07Speaker 2: a mass as a as a.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Trainer, definitely. So follow up question, do you have like
- 18:13Speaker 1: a favorite way to work out for myself?
- 18:16Speaker 2: Yes?
- 18:17Speaker 1: No, no, no, for yourself?
- 18:18Speaker 2: First, yeah, I do, and and of course I do.
- 18:20Speaker 2: What do you think now, I'm winging it every day.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I do, and and a lot of it translates to
- 18:29Speaker 2: I started honing it when I started working with athletes
- 18:31Speaker 2: because I needed more of a regimented system. And then
- 18:36Speaker 2: I realized that everybody's an athlete, and everybody you know,
- 18:41Speaker 2: you know, I'm not trying to be a cliche here,
- 18:44Speaker 2: but life is a sport. Everybody's an athlete. The if
- 18:47Speaker 2: you look at movements in real life, they're not that
- 18:51Speaker 2: different from what you see on the field or on
- 18:53Speaker 2: the court. And if you can can take movements and
- 18:58Speaker 2: put them under load and apply them unevenly in multiple
- 19:03Speaker 2: planes of motion and play with heart rate protocols, you
- 19:07Speaker 2: can create a system that works for the majority of
- 19:13Speaker 2: the people coming to you. Obviously not the ones on
- 19:14Speaker 2: the far left of the spectrum, on the far right
- 19:16Speaker 2: of the spectrum, because that's going to be a different
- 19:18Speaker 2: Like if you're training for mass that's different. If you're
- 19:21Speaker 2: training for endurance, that's different. But nowadays What I use
- 19:27Speaker 2: here is I want to be people want to be leaner,
- 19:29Speaker 2: and they want to see separation between muscle groups, is
- 19:33Speaker 2: how I describe it. Really, what they're talking about is
- 19:35Speaker 2: being leaner, and then as they get leaner and they
- 19:39Speaker 2: start to see the muscle that's there, then they see
- 19:41Speaker 2: what they want more over less of, and then you
- 19:43Speaker 2: can kind of skew the program that way. If it's
- 19:46Speaker 2: for a particular sport. If you if you if you
- 19:48Speaker 2: ask the right questions and you find out that they
- 19:50Speaker 2: play pickup basketball on the weekendswer that they are competitive
- 19:55Speaker 2: tennis and they play three times a week at their
- 19:57Speaker 2: tennis club, you know there's there are different you know,
- 19:59Speaker 2: energy systems that come into play with different sports, so
- 20:02Speaker 2: you push the training to match those sports. You know,
- 20:05Speaker 2: I've worked with boxers. It's a three minute round with
- 20:09Speaker 2: one minute down, So why wouldn't I train them eventually
- 20:14Speaker 2: what it to look like is probably three and a
- 20:16Speaker 2: half minutes, four minutes and then forty five seconds or
- 20:20Speaker 2: thirty seconds down, so that when they get into the
- 20:22Speaker 2: actual about even though there's it's going to be different
- 20:25Speaker 2: intensity wise when somebody's actually swinging at you as well,
- 20:28Speaker 2: when you're playing defense, not just offense. Your body goes,
- 20:31Speaker 2: I've been here before, right, If you know the fight
- 20:33Speaker 2: could go twelve rounds, why would you train them for sixteen, eighteen,
- 20:36Speaker 2: twenty rounds so that when they get to the twelve
- 20:38Speaker 2: front golf forbid, right, they go, I'm not tapped out right,
- 20:42Speaker 2: They're not. They haven't peaked. So you like to strength train,
- 20:46Speaker 2: strength train, would hit intervals.
- 20:49Speaker 1: I also think it's interesting because in that regard in
- 20:52Speaker 1: the boxer example, that's like a different type of endurance.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Like some people hear the word endurance and they think
- 20:57Speaker 1: strictly I've got to go run twelve miles, but that's
- 21:01Speaker 1: not always the case. Yeah, And I think that's I
- 21:03Speaker 1: think that's a really good point.
- 21:04Speaker 2: I'm a big fan of strengthening. If you look at it,
- 21:06Speaker 2: people say, oh, your metabolism starts to drop when you
- 21:09Speaker 2: get older. So what drives metabolism Lean tissue? Right, muscle,
- 21:12Speaker 2: it's active tissue. It requires it's burning at a higher
- 21:16Speaker 2: rate than inert tissue fat. So if you have lean tissue,
- 21:20Speaker 2: stands to reason that your metabolism is going to be
- 21:22Speaker 2: burning A trained don't add hit intervals, don't tax your cardiovascularism.
- 21:26Speaker 2: But strength train. You want to maintain lean tissue and girls,
- 21:31Speaker 2: women are not going to get too big. You're not.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I mean I lay that challenge out there. If you
- 21:35Speaker 2: don't change your caloric intake and you add strength training,
- 21:39Speaker 2: you will not build size. Period. You can't. I challenge you.
- 21:44Speaker 1: I think that's definitely a huge misconception.
- 21:46Speaker 2: You don't mean your body doesn't you in this booth,
- 21:51Speaker 2: one of us has. I mean, the numbers are out there.
- 21:57Speaker 2: You guys have one tenth to one twenty is the
- 22:00Speaker 2: testosterone that we have, which is necessary for building lean tissues.
- 22:03Speaker 2: So you're starting off, you know, way back right, you're
- 22:08Speaker 2: starting off behind the eight ball on that. Plus, you're
- 22:12Speaker 2: probably not going to reach technical failure on your lifts
- 22:16Speaker 2: between the eight and twelve rep range, which is proven
- 22:19Speaker 2: to create hypertrophy, you know, growth and muscle tissue scize,
- 22:23Speaker 2: blah blah blah. You're not. You're just not going to
- 22:25Speaker 2: train like that. You're can sleep enough, You're not going
- 22:27Speaker 2: to reduce your stress enough. You're not going to get
- 22:31Speaker 2: your calories adequately timed out through that. It's a process.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Getting big is a lifestyle. If you're getting big, chances
- 22:38Speaker 2: are you're eating too much.
- 22:40Speaker 1: I want to touch on something you said because you
- 22:42Speaker 1: mentioned you're not sleeping enough. You you told no, no, no,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I just I mean you were referencing about about hypertrop
- 22:49Speaker 1: and you.
- 22:50Speaker 2: See how I got defenses like I'm trying. I know,
- 22:52Speaker 2: I don't. It's the worst aspect of you.
- 22:55Speaker 1: You told Stelf earlier this year that the two lifestyle
- 22:58Speaker 1: factors that are most overlaw our hydration and sleep, and
- 23:02Speaker 1: that they're the two easiest things to fix.
- 23:04Speaker 2: I stand by that, I know, so I'm my ask.
- 23:07Speaker 1: My ask of you is how much how much should
- 23:10Speaker 1: I how much should someone be sleeping? And how much
- 23:14Speaker 1: should someone be hydrating?
- 23:16Speaker 2: So there are different There's a lot of information out
- 23:21Speaker 2: there right right. What's doctor Moss's book. James Moss is
- 23:25Speaker 2: a power sleep Sleep, Power power Sleep, I think, and
- 23:28Speaker 2: I've worked with him. I should know. No disrespect sir.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I mean, eight hours is eight hours is the rule?
- 23:33Speaker 2: Can some of you get by with a little less sure?
- 23:35Speaker 2: Do some of you need a little more sure? But
- 23:37Speaker 2: if you you'll find it right, you're probably sleeping too
- 23:41Speaker 2: little most people on average, and hydration people don't take it.
- 23:45Speaker 2: And you know where you see the hydration fall short
- 23:49Speaker 2: and colder climates because they don't see themselves or feel
- 23:53Speaker 2: themselves sweating, and they don't think, well, I don't I
- 23:54Speaker 2: don't need it anymore. And people who drink a ton
- 23:57Speaker 2: of caffeinated beverages, you have to hydrate caffeines and diary.
- 24:00Speaker 2: You just have to compensate for what you're doing bad.
- 24:03Speaker 2: And add more, what about hype and the treatment. You're
- 24:06Speaker 2: not gonna drown. You're not gonna drown. I challenge you
- 24:08Speaker 2: to drown yourself. If you do, sorry, apologies to your family.
- 24:14Speaker 2: But have a little more. When you think you've had enough,
- 24:17Speaker 2: have a little more.
- 24:18Speaker 1: And it's interesting because these are things you know, people
- 24:21Speaker 1: always say you can't over exercise a bad diet. You
- 24:24Speaker 1: also need to do these things. You need sleep, you
- 24:28Speaker 1: need hydration. It's all part of the puzzle.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so the pillars right, strength, cardio, hydration, nutrition,
- 24:38Speaker 2: rest and recovery, supplementation, if you want to touch on that.
- 24:44Speaker 2: And then and to me, it's it's a game, right,
- 24:46Speaker 2: It's a long it's a long game. So if you're
- 24:49Speaker 2: you don't have to be obsessive with it. Mean, it's
- 24:51Speaker 2: my world. I live in this, so I think about
- 24:53Speaker 2: it probably too much or more than the average. But
- 24:56Speaker 2: if you just look at what you're not doing and
- 24:59Speaker 2: try to improve that, it's like you're playing a little
- 25:01Speaker 2: game of ketchup, but don't do it with any stress.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Just do it with It's fun, right, It's like it's
- 25:06Speaker 2: like keeping a bunch of balls in the air. It's
- 25:07Speaker 2: like spinning plates on a thing. You just just go
- 25:09Speaker 2: for the one that looks like it's going to fall,
- 25:11Speaker 2: and you're playing that game. I like that. Yeah, it's
- 25:14Speaker 2: it's what am I not doing? Right? What am I?
- 25:17Speaker 2: What am I not doing well enough? If my nutrition's
- 25:19Speaker 2: on point, my training is on point, my hydration's on point,
- 25:21Speaker 2: but I'm not sleeping today. I'm going to focus at
- 25:23Speaker 2: them more on sleep. I get my sleep under control.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Then I realized, you know what, my sleep's under control,
- 25:27Speaker 2: my eating has fallen off a bit. I gotta get
- 25:29Speaker 2: back on that, right. And it's a little game and
- 25:31Speaker 2: is making it fun. Don't make it stressful, and don't
- 25:34Speaker 2: don't be a jerk about it. Don't put it on
- 25:36Speaker 2: the people in your inner circle, or you're gonna be
- 25:38Speaker 2: very lonely because no one wants to hear about how
- 25:40Speaker 2: much you're not sleeping, how much you're not exercising, how
- 25:42Speaker 2: much you're not not not No one cares. I really
- 25:45Speaker 2: don't care.
- 25:46Speaker 1: There's like so much advice to be had. I do
- 25:49Speaker 1: want to take a second to kind of rewind a
- 25:51Speaker 1: little bit and hear about from the get go, you
- 25:53Speaker 1: building your business a little bit, kind of backtrack to
- 25:56Speaker 1: opening your first gym. So tell me about that experience,
- 26:00Speaker 1: sad time in your life for you.
- 26:02Speaker 2: I was training out of I started by doing a
- 26:06Speaker 2: little cat and mouse thing, working with a couple of
- 26:08Speaker 2: people in a gym where I wasn't certified, I wasn't
- 26:10Speaker 2: a trainer there and I had been asked to train
- 26:12Speaker 2: them and I did. And then I had to, like,
- 26:14Speaker 2: I had to look like they were training with me
- 26:16Speaker 2: or we were working on whatever it was. And I
- 26:18Speaker 2: probably shouldn't have done that, and I don't encourage that,
- 26:20Speaker 2: And now, as someone in a gym, I would I
- 26:24Speaker 2: would not like to see that, but anyway, that's what
- 26:26Speaker 2: it was. And then I did a lot of in homes.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I had a terrific friend he's since passed away as
- 26:32Speaker 2: a chiropractor, who sent me a lot of in home people,
- 26:35Speaker 2: and I spent a lot of time driving around La
- 26:38Speaker 2: going from house to house to house, working with anybody
- 26:42Speaker 2: and everybody, because you know so passionate. Hey, this is
- 26:46Speaker 2: so great, we can do this. And also I was
- 26:49Speaker 2: a fat kid, so seeing people who struggle with their
- 26:53Speaker 2: way and knowing I had, I don't want to say
- 26:55Speaker 2: overcome it because I think in your mind you're kind
- 26:56Speaker 2: of always a fat kid once you're a fat kid,
- 26:58Speaker 2: and but you know you can control it, and it's
- 27:02Speaker 2: it is on you. And to be able to share
- 27:04Speaker 2: that with people I was, you know, tell you all right,
- 27:06Speaker 2: when you're in your twenties.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I was a fat kid. What I was?
- 27:10Speaker 2: Wow?
- 27:11Speaker 1: I lost seventy pounds in college.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Wow. And that's that's going the other way right right.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure I gained like ten to fifteen
- 27:18Speaker 1: freshman year, but from the moment I stepped on the scale,
- 27:21Speaker 1: saw two oh four.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Wait a minute, two oh four. I think my highest
- 27:25Speaker 2: weight ever was two to eight.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Wow. I'm glad that we're on the same page.
- 27:28Speaker 2: You're gonna we could have fought if we were boxing,
- 27:31Speaker 2: we could have we.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Could have rustled. Yeah, I'm gonna ask you a question
- 27:35Speaker 1: about that in a little bit. But I don't want
- 27:37Speaker 1: to deviate from this track of you talking about building
- 27:40Speaker 1: your business, but now that we know this about each other.
- 27:42Speaker 2: So I did that, and then I realized it was inefficient. Right,
- 27:45Speaker 2: I'm driving, I was going from I don't know how
- 27:47Speaker 2: well you know La. I'm going from Malibu, Palisades, West, Hollywood,
- 27:50Speaker 2: Beverly Hills, brent with bell Air Bank, Bank Bank, and
- 27:52Speaker 2: I'm putting on a gajillion miles and I'm on my
- 27:56Speaker 2: car and I'm eating chick and breast and yams and
- 28:02Speaker 2: distilled water out of me. It's like you'd be. It's
- 28:04Speaker 2: a weird existence, right, It's you're operating in this vacuum.
- 28:07Speaker 2: And I and I realized I had to I needed
- 28:10Speaker 2: to have a home base, and so I went to
- 28:12Speaker 2: a bunch of the gyms within ex mileage of my
- 28:16Speaker 2: home and I and in LA that's a lot like right.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Somebody could say, what do you mean? There are four
- 28:21Speaker 2: gyms that I know of in my city, but there
- 28:23Speaker 2: are so many in La, right. And I could have said,
- 28:27Speaker 2: you can't swing a cat, but then the cat people
- 28:30Speaker 2: would yell at me. I didn't mean that, I've never
- 28:31Speaker 2: swung a cat, So relax on that, okay. And I
- 28:36Speaker 2: found one that was there, and the guy was the
- 28:38Speaker 2: guy was cool, and he expanded and grew and I
- 28:40Speaker 2: was able to, you know, to nest there and find
- 28:44Speaker 2: a home. And I started just backing up the hours
- 28:47Speaker 2: just bang, and I was doing what part of LA
- 28:49Speaker 2: was then it was in West Hollywood. I don't lost again,
- 28:51Speaker 2: and I was nine, ten, eleven, twelve hours a day.
- 28:56Speaker 2: A couple of days I did fifteen. That was the
- 28:57Speaker 2: most I had done on a day. It was right
- 28:59Speaker 2: looking back and I'm like, that's insanity.
- 29:01Speaker 1: And what time is your day starting?
- 29:04Speaker 2: Well, my day, I always get up between three.
- 29:06Speaker 1: And four okay, yeah, so but back then as well,
- 29:09Speaker 1: three and four same okay. So wow, fifteen hour days
- 29:13Speaker 1: starting at three am.
- 29:14Speaker 2: When I wrote my book, and uh, I wrote it
- 29:18Speaker 2: in four, came out in five. I got up at
- 29:20Speaker 2: three fifteen instead of three forty five four, And that
- 29:25Speaker 2: there was that was the cutoff for me. Three fifteen
- 29:28Speaker 2: wake up was really crazy.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Do you know that there's a copy of your book
- 29:31Speaker 1: right now going for four thy, four hundred and three
- 29:34Speaker 1: dollars on Amazon. Do not buy that.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that's over.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I just wanted you to know that I was looking
- 29:40Speaker 1: into your book that's over, I would say, so you
- 29:44Speaker 1: don't think it's four thousand dollars worth of.
- 29:46Speaker 2: I'm very proud of that book. But whoever it is
- 29:48Speaker 2: that's going to buy that, please email me. I will
- 29:51Speaker 2: send you. Don't do that.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I was just thinking, is this like an exclusive sign special?
- 29:58Speaker 2: So I'm going to post that.
- 30:01Speaker 1: I saw that earlier.
- 30:03Speaker 2: But again, what value you take from that? I can't
- 30:07Speaker 2: put a price on that. It's like the trainer for
- 30:09Speaker 2: that much. I don't know what to sort of like,
- 30:11Speaker 2: watch it. You see it's the car thing? Yeah, how
- 30:13Speaker 2: much is it worth to you?
- 30:14Speaker 1: It's the car thing? Quick question about your morning routine?
- 30:18Speaker 1: Everyone's got one. What does yours look like at three fifteen,
- 30:22Speaker 1: three forty five.
- 30:22Speaker 2: In the morning. No, no, it's three forty five four now.
- 30:26Speaker 1: In the morning.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I wake up and I do. This is going to
- 30:30Speaker 2: sound like such a plug and it's not.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Do it?
- 30:32Speaker 3: I do?
- 30:33Speaker 2: I drink a whole bottle of the Propel unflavored okay,
- 30:38Speaker 2: because I want to get my water started the day,
- 30:40Speaker 2: because I know I'll probably fall behind, and if I
- 30:42Speaker 2: feel like I get a jumpston on that, then I
- 30:45Speaker 2: have a product called Split which is half almond butter
- 30:49Speaker 2: half preserves or jelly because my nutritionist, doctor Philip Goldie,
- 30:54Speaker 2: is like, you can work out on the anti stomach
- 30:56Speaker 2: al you want, but you're better off having this just
- 30:58Speaker 2: for what my metal type. That's a whole nother story,
- 31:01Speaker 2: but that works for me. And then I shower because
- 31:05Speaker 2: I can't do anything without having a shower. And then
- 31:07Speaker 2: I go to the gym and I work out from
- 31:10Speaker 2: five to six forty you work out, just you. I
- 31:14Speaker 2: work out with a kid named Brad Siskin who's a
- 31:16Speaker 2: trainer in my gym. Terrific guy, Like his instagram is
- 31:19Speaker 2: BSD Workout. I'm not plugging, but you should know.
- 31:21Speaker 1: No, you should know.
- 31:22Speaker 2: And he doesn't workouts, and he's the kid's never in
- 31:25Speaker 2: a bad mood and he's hilarious.
- 31:26Speaker 1: And you say, kid, how old is he?
- 31:28Speaker 2: He's probably forty five. I don't know.
- 31:31Speaker 1: I'm envisioning like some twenty one year old young end.
- 31:34Speaker 3: No.
- 31:34Speaker 2: No, no, he's a great guy, great trainer, and and
- 31:37Speaker 2: he helps me a lot at the gym. So we
- 31:39Speaker 2: do that and then I see my first person at seven,
- 31:41Speaker 2: and then when I'm finished with that person at eight,
- 31:45Speaker 2: I drive down to the Lakers and I'm there till
- 31:48Speaker 2: one and I come back to the gym, and I
- 31:50Speaker 2: am there and I start. I start people at one thirty,
- 31:53Speaker 2: and I go one thirty, two thirty, three, thirty four
- 31:55Speaker 2: to thirty and sometimes at five thirty. And I will
- 31:57Speaker 2: tell you at this stage each of the game, the
- 32:01Speaker 2: five thirty client is tough. I like you it once
- 32:05Speaker 2: or twice a week. It's tough. So usually I've done
- 32:07Speaker 2: at five thirty. I'm home by six, six ten.
- 32:10Speaker 1: And you have a little a little kid. Now.
- 32:13Speaker 2: I have four kids, I know, but you have a
- 32:15Speaker 2: very young Yeah it's two and a half.
- 32:19Speaker 1: How old are your other kids?
- 32:20Speaker 2: I think you voted this year. I have twenty almost
- 32:24Speaker 2: nineteen fourteen and two and a half.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Got it?
- 32:26Speaker 2: Yeah? How is that to be the best thing ever?
- 32:29Speaker 1: A dad is a little guy.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Again, if I have more free time and more money,
- 32:33Speaker 2: I'd have more kids. It's the best thing ever.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I was kind of surprised in your morning routine.
- 32:41Speaker 2: The I couldn't do that without my wife. Just let's
- 32:45Speaker 2: be let's own that. She runs the house, she runs
- 32:49Speaker 2: the business, she runs the little guy. She's a ten.
- 32:53Speaker 1: She's a ten.
- 32:54Speaker 2: She's a ten.
- 32:54Speaker 1: It's good to surround yourself with tens.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got a lot of them. But I mean
- 32:58Speaker 2: I've been through I've been through the fire.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I know.
- 33:01Speaker 3: I know.
- 33:01Speaker 2: It's not like I stepped into the world at tends.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Don't we always just step into the world.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Somebody said to me, Wow, you're so lucky, and I go, whoa, whoa.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I am. I own that, no question. But there's also
- 33:16Speaker 2: been a process of elimination, and there's you know, you
- 33:19Speaker 2: go through certain things to get where you are. And
- 33:21Speaker 2: I'm not going to be one of those Instagram philosophers,
- 33:25Speaker 2: but the Plato of Instagram. I see some people like, dude,
- 33:29Speaker 2: you can't keep with the deep thoughts. Just stop, just
- 33:32Speaker 2: stop stop it.
- 33:35Speaker 3: No.
- 33:36Speaker 2: So it's a process elimination, right. You start to weed out,
- 33:38Speaker 2: and you start to realize what you deserve, you start
- 33:40Speaker 2: to realize what you will won't tolerate, and you make
- 33:44Speaker 2: some you make them hard and fast decisions and you
- 33:46Speaker 2: got to stand by.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Them, definitely. And when we were talking yesterday on the phone, Uh,
- 33:51Speaker 1: everybody that comes in here, you know, there's so many
- 33:53Speaker 1: different hurdle moments we all have in our life. And
- 33:55Speaker 1: you said that after your divorce in two thousand and six.
- 33:59Speaker 1: You really lean into fitness, maybe even more than you
- 34:02Speaker 1: had before I did.
- 34:06Speaker 2: It's funny. Go back to Dwayne Johnson when he spoke
- 34:10Speaker 2: at the Lakers last year. It was powerful. You can
- 34:13Speaker 2: find that online. You can find that on YouTube or
- 34:15Speaker 2: on his somewhere. But he the way he said it,
- 34:19Speaker 2: it was something I'm like, yeah, I know, but I
- 34:21Speaker 2: hadn't put it into words. So when he said it,
- 34:23Speaker 2: it was pretty powerful. He backed up in the room
- 34:27Speaker 2: in our film room, and he leaned against the wall
- 34:31Speaker 2: and he slammed the wall with his open palm.
- 34:33Speaker 1: And he goes, it makes me nervous just thinking about it.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Yeah, like so startling. Yeah, and he banged it hard,
- 34:39Speaker 2: and he goes, I feel like my back is always
- 34:42Speaker 2: against the wall. This is how I face life. And
- 34:46Speaker 2: what's there for me that I can always count on
- 34:49Speaker 2: as the weight room, the gym is always there, the
- 34:52Speaker 2: weights are always there. It gets me through, It gives
- 34:55Speaker 2: me perspective, It keeps me strong, and I know that
- 34:58Speaker 2: I can always count on them. He goes, can't count
- 35:00Speaker 2: on other things, but this, whether I go through a success,
- 35:04Speaker 2: a failure, a good day, a bad day, this is
- 35:07Speaker 2: always there for me. And it sets me on the
- 35:09Speaker 2: right track. And I'm paraphrasing because he was far more
- 35:12Speaker 2: eloquent on that than I was. But his message is
- 35:17Speaker 2: has been it's the same for me, and that's probably
- 35:21Speaker 2: the only parallel I will draw between us, but his
- 35:25Speaker 2: that's the message. So for me, Yeah, the weight room
- 35:28Speaker 2: was there. And even if it wasn't, you know, Fire
- 35:30Speaker 2: and Brimstone personal records, best workout of my life kind
- 35:33Speaker 2: of thing, it was definitely there. And it's good to know,
- 35:40Speaker 2: what do they call it, your bolt hole? It's good
- 35:41Speaker 2: to know that you have that place to go to,
- 35:43Speaker 2: and I encourage anyone and everyone to find that place.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Yours may not be the weight room. It may be
- 35:48Speaker 2: it may be your peloton bike, it may be your
- 35:51Speaker 2: soul cycle class, it may be your CrossFit, whatever it
- 35:55Speaker 2: is for you, but find that, lean on it, lean
- 35:59Speaker 2: into it, and trust it.
- 36:01Speaker 1: And I feel like this might be the answer to
- 36:03Speaker 1: the question I'm going to ask you next. As I mentioned,
- 36:06Speaker 1: I was over two hundred pounds in two thousand and eight,
- 36:08Speaker 1: and so what is something that you would tell that
- 36:12Speaker 1: person who like kind of is at the beginning of
- 36:15Speaker 1: what could be either a weight loss or maybe it's
- 36:17Speaker 1: just a fitness journey. But they're at the beginning and
- 36:19Speaker 1: they feel so overwhelmed.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Start, yeah, start, Start. There's no fitness anniversary. There's no
- 36:28Speaker 2: I mean you may have one. Oh you know in
- 36:29Speaker 2: this two thousand and this I did. Okay, fine, but
- 36:32Speaker 2: that's for you. No one really cares. They're looking at
- 36:35Speaker 2: you today. They're looking at you as they see if
- 36:36Speaker 2: they're even looking at you. Most people are really looking
- 36:38Speaker 2: at themselves. It doesn't matter where you're And I would say,
- 36:44Speaker 2: don't worry about the scale at the beginning of your
- 36:46Speaker 2: of your air quotes journey. Just just start, just do
- 36:51Speaker 2: something you know, and once you get started, it's about
- 36:55Speaker 2: it's it's a brick, right, You're just acting bricks. You're
- 37:01Speaker 2: just putting brick on top of brick on top of brick,
- 37:03Speaker 2: and you're building this foundation that will be unshakable. And
- 37:08Speaker 2: if you keep doing it and you keep I think
- 37:11Speaker 2: the word grind is overused, But if you just keep grinding,
- 37:14Speaker 2: you just keep pushing, you're gonna pull back one day
- 37:17Speaker 2: and exhale them look and you're gonna go, wow, I've
- 37:20Speaker 2: laid a hell of a foundation, and now I've built
- 37:22Speaker 2: a beautiful building, how structure on it, and you're gonna
- 37:26Speaker 2: see what it comes from. And it's not that bad.
- 37:29Speaker 2: I mean, people say, you just spent two hours a
- 37:31Speaker 2: day working out?
- 37:32Speaker 3: Do I?
- 37:32Speaker 2: I don't know. It's yeah with a probably total time
- 37:36Speaker 2: in start to finish to clean up to go is
- 37:39Speaker 2: two hours. What is that eight percent of my day? Right? Again?
- 37:43Speaker 2: The math thing a seven to two out of twenty
- 37:46Speaker 2: four using your hands, Yeah, I got too.
- 37:48Speaker 1: I also failed. I didn't fail, but I got to
- 37:50Speaker 1: see in statistics. I just thought you should know.
- 37:52Speaker 2: I got a D in statistics and that was a tough.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Another tough moment when my kids said did you ever
- 37:57Speaker 2: have a bad grade? And I looked at him. I thought,
- 37:58Speaker 2: this is that moment you lie to sound great to help,
- 38:01Speaker 2: so they set their standards higher and I just said,
- 38:04Speaker 2: yes I did.
- 38:06Speaker 1: I love it. Okay, So good advice for someone that's
- 38:09Speaker 1: kind of at the beginning. You are training with this
- 38:13Speaker 1: guy in one gym you like it. When does being
- 38:17Speaker 1: in that gym translate to having your own spot?
- 38:21Speaker 2: When I was uh oh, when I left the end
- 38:24Speaker 2: homes and started a gym?
- 38:25Speaker 1: Right, so when did when did you effectively start?
- 38:28Speaker 2: So I was working at a gym and I was
- 38:30Speaker 2: there for eight years and I was the hours were
- 38:32Speaker 2: just you know, it was I took all comers, right,
- 38:36Speaker 2: can you can work out yet? Yep? Yep, yep, yep.
- 38:38Speaker 2: I just you know, probably to my own detriment whatever,
- 38:41Speaker 2: but it was I loved it there. I don't have
- 38:43Speaker 2: a bad memory of that at all. And uh, the
- 38:47Speaker 2: gym owner and I just were different on it. He
- 38:49Speaker 2: said one day something was broken and I was, you know,
- 38:53Speaker 2: cranking out so many people, and he had sort of
- 38:57Speaker 2: loosened the reins on who could and could not come
- 39:01Speaker 2: in there, and the gym was a little more crowded
- 39:03Speaker 2: than I would have liked. And I was bringing in
- 39:05Speaker 2: a higher level of clientele than was there. And not
- 39:09Speaker 2: to say not to judge people, but meaning higher profile people.
- 39:13Speaker 2: So I couldn't. I didn't want to have them in
- 39:15Speaker 2: a spot that was so jam packed. And this one
- 39:19Speaker 2: piece of equipment that was the centerpiece and you could do,
- 39:23Speaker 2: you know, twenty thousand things on it was broken and
- 39:26Speaker 2: it was still broken, and it was broken again, and
- 39:27Speaker 2: it was broken for like three weeks. And I said
- 39:30Speaker 2: some once and he snapped on me, and he said,
- 39:33Speaker 2: if I have the number three gym in town. I'm
- 39:37Speaker 2: fine with that. And I didn't look at it like
- 39:40Speaker 2: number one gym, number three and it when I'm on
- 39:42Speaker 2: the podium here, I just looked at it like, don't
- 39:44Speaker 2: you want your stuff to be better? If I get
- 39:46Speaker 2: a dent in my car, I'm fixing the dent. I
- 39:48Speaker 2: just I don't want to be I don't want my
- 39:50Speaker 2: car to look like that. I don't want to be
- 39:51Speaker 2: that guy. So I don't know. Something, did something click?
- 39:56Speaker 2: Was it a moment, I don't know, but I just thought,
- 39:58Speaker 2: I'm not okay.
- 40:00Speaker 1: With that, right, And I left and you left.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Yeah, So there you go. It's a big undertaking. We
- 40:06Speaker 2: touched on this, you know, to go from trainer to
- 40:09Speaker 2: gym owner and then to straddle the two and be both.
- 40:14Speaker 2: They are too. Those are two very different jobs. And
- 40:18Speaker 2: I said this to you before. If I can do it,
- 40:19Speaker 2: anyone can do it. But you have to go. I'm
- 40:22Speaker 2: going to be working, You're going to be wearing a
- 40:24Speaker 2: number of different hats, and you have to You can't
- 40:27Speaker 2: resent that. You can't put that off on your circle.
- 40:30Speaker 2: You can't come home and be a jerk because you
- 40:33Speaker 2: have used the word jerk twice now, because I'm trying
- 40:35Speaker 2: not to say swear words. Look at me.
- 40:37Speaker 1: I'm impressed with you.
- 40:38Speaker 2: I know, I know, self control, restraint, push away from
- 40:41Speaker 2: the table gunner. So you just have to know that
- 40:46Speaker 2: that you're putting a lot on your plate when you
- 40:49Speaker 2: do that. You can handle it, for sure, you can
- 40:50Speaker 2: handle it, but you have to be aware that you're
- 40:52Speaker 2: handling a lot, and you have to make sure that
- 40:54Speaker 2: people around you don't suffer because of that.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. So you get your own gym, mm hmmm.
- 41:00Speaker 2: And then you say, I'm going to do it perfectly,
- 41:03Speaker 2: nothing's going to be wrong. And then you think of
- 41:05Speaker 2: every gym you've been to, what you liked and what
- 41:07Speaker 2: you didn't like, and then you you try to weed
- 41:10Speaker 2: it out, and it's hard. It's it's an ongoing thing.
- 41:12Speaker 2: It's I mean, but it's a it's a it's a
- 41:15Speaker 2: passion project.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Your gym right now in Beverly Hills obviously not not obviously,
- 41:21Speaker 1: but I've never been there. I've seen it, you know, photos, videos,
- 41:25Speaker 1: reality television, whatever you want to say. Uh, it looks
- 41:29Speaker 1: like a playground.
- 41:30Speaker 2: It's full, it's full.
- 41:31Speaker 1: There are pieces of equipment in there. I don't know
- 41:34Speaker 1: if I've ever seen before.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I have some interesting prototype stuff. I also we uh.
- 41:39Speaker 2: I don't want to say I'm a gym equipment designer,
- 41:42Speaker 2: but I definitely modify and customize pieces of something. I
- 41:45Speaker 2: had a guy write me this morning on my website
- 41:47Speaker 2: and he said, where do you get the hooks on
- 41:49Speaker 2: the back of your dumbbell racks where you hooked your kettlebells?
- 41:54Speaker 2: And I said, I made them. I had a guy
- 41:56Speaker 2: make them for me because he said, because he has
- 41:58Speaker 2: a gym space issue. Well, I mean, I think a
- 42:00Speaker 2: lot of germ owners understand that I do too. And
- 42:05Speaker 2: I had no place for the kettlebells. And so I
- 42:08Speaker 2: looked and I said to the guy who I had
- 42:11Speaker 2: was a terrific machinist, I said, could you put a
- 42:14Speaker 2: hook on this that could support the weight of a kettlebell?
- 42:16Speaker 2: And so on the back of my dumbo racks are
- 42:19Speaker 2: hooks and the kettlebells racked right up there.
- 42:21Speaker 1: That I should probably start selling those hooks.
- 42:23Speaker 2: I'm sure he doesn't now he knows that there's a
- 42:27Speaker 2: gunner hook get yours now.
- 42:30Speaker 1: So you said you started working before opening your own
- 42:33Speaker 1: spot with a lot of higher profile clientele, would you.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Say for that, that's also something.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Now I don't do you want to know?
- 42:40Speaker 3: Man?
- 42:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to I want to work with celebrities.
- 42:42Speaker 2: First all, why do you want to work celebrities? What
- 42:44Speaker 2: are you trying to do? What's your end goal? I mean,
- 42:47Speaker 2: do you want to be in the movies? Do you
- 42:48Speaker 2: have a do you have a song you're trying to
- 42:50Speaker 2: get produced? Or do you have a script? Is your
- 42:53Speaker 2: cousin a model and trying to transition this? You have
- 42:56Speaker 2: to have the right and look, whatever it is is fine,
- 42:58Speaker 2: but you have to be honest with yourself about it.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Why do you do it?
- 43:03Speaker 2: Because I have a platform and fitness, and I have
- 43:06Speaker 2: ideas about how to make fitness doable for people. And
- 43:13Speaker 2: if I'm not working with higher profile people, it's harder
- 43:16Speaker 2: to get my message out. And it was way harder
- 43:18Speaker 2: back then to get it out. Now there are definitely
- 43:20Speaker 2: ways where even if I didn't have even if I
- 43:23Speaker 2: weren't linked or attached to certain people in the public eye,
- 43:28Speaker 2: I could still get it out now, right, there are
- 43:30Speaker 2: ways to blast it. But then you needed to have
- 43:35Speaker 2: an association with somebody who was already in the public
- 43:38Speaker 2: eye or who was climbing and if you were approached
- 43:42Speaker 2: or someone asked you, then you could say, yes, it's
- 43:45Speaker 2: great to work with this person, and here's what we do,
- 43:48Speaker 2: and then someone else might pick that up, and then
- 43:49Speaker 2: you have to find a way to parlay that into
- 43:53Speaker 2: your message.
- 43:55Speaker 1: I walk into the gym, Chloe walked into the gym.
- 43:59Speaker 1: Do you work out with us the same way?
- 44:01Speaker 3: Not?
- 44:02Speaker 1: Well, I mean, not based on body type. But would
- 44:04Speaker 1: you say that you work out a little bit differently
- 44:06Speaker 1: with someone who may be of that big name.
- 44:10Speaker 2: I write, you don't write the workouts based on their name.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Take notes. I write a different workout for every person
- 44:17Speaker 2: every day the night before. It's like my little homework thing.
- 44:20Speaker 2: And when my kids were younger, i'd sit with them
- 44:22Speaker 2: and we do homework together. And I still do it now.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Every night I write it and my wife will say
- 44:29Speaker 2: how much work do you have? And sometimes it's fifteen minutes,
- 44:32Speaker 2: sometimes it's an hour and fifteen minutes. It just depends.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Would the workout be the same, No, she has a
- 44:39Speaker 2: different focus than you, have different goals. She's coming off
- 44:43Speaker 2: of something different than you're coming off of. Right where
- 44:46Speaker 2: you're headed is probably different. You have different body types here.
- 44:49Speaker 2: I mean you factor in that. Are there going to
- 44:51Speaker 2: be certain moves that everybody does for sure, probably in
- 44:55Speaker 2: a different sequence, maybe for different duration, different intensity, different
- 45:00Speaker 2: a different load. All those things are factored in, but
- 45:03Speaker 2: it definitely won't be the same. I had so many
- 45:06Speaker 2: years ago trained me and said, I've been with you
- 45:08Speaker 2: for ten years. We've never done the same workout. And
- 45:11Speaker 2: I said, thank God, could you imagine how bored I
- 45:13Speaker 2: would be? I mean, I'm glad you're not bored, but
- 45:15Speaker 2: I would. I can't do that. I have to and
- 45:18Speaker 2: you don't just it's not just put together like hey,
- 45:21Speaker 2: let's slap this onto this or this is next to this,
- 45:24Speaker 2: so we use it. But my gym is laid out
- 45:26Speaker 2: in a way that there's a flow to it. There's
- 45:29Speaker 2: a sequence to it. There has to be a rhythm
- 45:30Speaker 2: that goes with it, and you set a pace which
- 45:33Speaker 2: creates an intensity and all that stuff has to be
- 45:37Speaker 2: You can't wan that.
- 45:39Speaker 1: That's smart. It's true though, And I mean people like
- 45:41Speaker 1: it's a service as well, you know, so someone's showing
- 45:44Speaker 1: up to work out with that.
- 45:45Speaker 2: That is a whole other podcast. I go into a
- 45:47Speaker 2: whole thing on this is a service industry. You better
- 45:52Speaker 2: be serving your clients and if you are not, you
- 45:55Speaker 2: need to get out of this industry.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Right And I opinion, well, I think that's what's so
- 45:59Speaker 1: great about here, that this is what you do, because
- 46:02Speaker 1: I'm sure you know there are so many people that
- 46:05Speaker 1: would love to show up at your gym and have
- 46:06Speaker 1: the opportunity to work out with you, and they would
- 46:10Speaker 1: just be probably be happy to be in the room.
- 46:12Speaker 1: But that doesn't mean that you're not going to provide
- 46:16Speaker 1: a service for them.
- 46:18Speaker 2: And when you come in, it's all handled. We have
- 46:20Speaker 2: everything in the bathroom at the Genify, the towels, the soap, shampoo,
- 46:24Speaker 2: Q tips, all that stuff is there. The towels and
- 46:29Speaker 2: water is all out for you. The recovery drinks are
- 46:33Speaker 2: there for you. That's just show up and work out.
- 46:35Speaker 2: The rest is provided. That's what you're trying to do.
- 46:37Speaker 2: It's also you know, that's the kind of service we
- 46:40Speaker 2: want to provide. Some gyms aren't like that, and that's
- 46:41Speaker 2: not wrong I'm saying. In terms of the training, you
- 46:44Speaker 2: have to be I believe, a step ahead of their
- 46:47Speaker 2: needs and wants right physical and emotional. Sounds like you're
- 46:52Speaker 2: getting into the shrink thing, which I'm not into but
- 46:55Speaker 2: you have to be available to them because that's what
- 46:58Speaker 2: they're coming to you for. You have to have the answer,
- 47:00Speaker 2: so you don't have to have the answer to everything,
- 47:01Speaker 2: and you should. You should be quick with I don't
- 47:03Speaker 2: know when you don't know, and then look it up.
- 47:06Speaker 2: But you know, put the towel on the piece of
- 47:08Speaker 2: equipment before they're on it. You know, hand them the
- 47:11Speaker 2: water when you know they're going to need it, not
- 47:14Speaker 2: where they have to ask for it. That's those are
- 47:15Speaker 2: little service things, and there are certain gyms that don't
- 47:17Speaker 2: do that. The guy may just yell out hydrate. You know,
- 47:20Speaker 2: everybody gets on water and that's fine too, but you're
- 47:22Speaker 2: still serving, got it, you.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Said before you quoted Duran Johnson and you were talking
- 47:28Speaker 1: about what he said in front of the Lakers. That's
- 47:31Speaker 1: probably just one of the many lessons that your clients
- 47:34Speaker 1: not necessarily drained being your client, But the people that
- 47:36Speaker 1: you work with have taught you tons.
- 47:40Speaker 2: And that's why I work. That's why I love. Not
- 47:42Speaker 2: that you can't learn from everybody, because I think you can,
- 47:44Speaker 2: and everybody has a different path and you can't fault
- 47:46Speaker 2: someone for not knowing something that is so basic or
- 47:49Speaker 2: innate to you because they've learned something else that's basically
- 47:51Speaker 2: innate to them. So you take that. You have to
- 47:55Speaker 2: be respectful of that. That's one. The other thing is
- 47:58Speaker 2: I love being around achievers and doers and people who
- 48:04Speaker 2: overcome and and and there are people from different socioeconomic
- 48:09Speaker 2: backgrounds who overcome. Right, it's not just people who don't
- 48:12Speaker 2: have a lot who get who who become successful financially
- 48:18Speaker 2: or otherwise who have overcome. There are people who are
- 48:20Speaker 2: born with, you know, the silver or platinum spoon in
- 48:23Speaker 2: their mouth who have to overcome too. And you might
- 48:27Speaker 2: be rolling your eyes at that, but it's true. They
- 48:30Speaker 2: they have that. They have their own struggles and battles
- 48:34Speaker 2: and expectations put upon them, or even expectations of other
- 48:38Speaker 2: kids gonna fail because he was born with everything he
- 48:40Speaker 2: doesn't know how to work for. There's that, or there's
- 48:43Speaker 2: he was born with everything he should he should hyper achieve.
- 48:47Speaker 2: That's another. You know, everybody has their own stuff, so
- 48:50Speaker 2: but I like being around the people who achieve and
- 48:51Speaker 2: who push and the people who have. You know, I
- 48:54Speaker 2: worked with Jennifer Lopez for years and it was just
- 48:58Speaker 2: so eye opening and and the level the work ethic
- 49:01Speaker 2: and the achievement. And I was with her when she
- 49:04Speaker 2: had the number one song and the number one film
- 49:06Speaker 2: at the same time, and that had never been done.
- 49:09Speaker 2: That's just cool. You know, you can't do She was filming.
- 49:14Speaker 2: We were in Philadelphia for months and she was filming
- 49:18Speaker 2: a movie and on the weekends was was taking a
- 49:22Speaker 2: helicopter to New York to film music videos for the album.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Coming back filming Monday Morne and it was just go,
- 49:28Speaker 2: go go. I'm working out and working out every day,
- 49:31Speaker 2: working out every day, and it was beautiful to see. Yeah.
- 49:36Speaker 2: I worked with Bruce Willis for a number of years,
- 49:39Speaker 2: one of the best guys I've ever met. And we
- 49:43Speaker 2: were filming in Boston and the weekends back to New
- 49:46Speaker 2: York to do other just bang bang bang, and there's
- 49:49Speaker 2: just no downtime. And people think, oh, they're just kicking it,
- 49:51Speaker 2: they've got all this downtime. No, No, not the ones
- 49:55Speaker 2: who are achieving, right, Sylvester Stallone's it's writing, painting, acting, directing,
- 50:03Speaker 2: and it's all just back to back to back to back.
- 50:06Speaker 2: And the athletes is the same, you know, that's the
- 50:08Speaker 2: there's a parallel there. There's no off season anymore. There
- 50:11Speaker 2: just isn't. And he said, well, if a team in
- 50:14Speaker 2: the NBA doesn't make the playoffs, they're done mid April
- 50:16Speaker 2: and they don't start up till October. Right now, what
- 50:18Speaker 2: do you think they do? Lie on the beach for
- 50:19Speaker 2: five months? They're they're back in the gym five, six, seven,
- 50:26Speaker 2: eight days later a week lare two weeks later, they're doing.
- 50:30Speaker 1: What's been one of the greatest lessons you've learned working
- 50:34Speaker 1: with the Lakers.
- 50:38Speaker 2: It's been learning there's there's a corporate side to that
- 50:41Speaker 2: that I not that I didn't respect, but I didn't
- 50:43Speaker 2: know the corporate minefield you just have. It's a different
- 50:49Speaker 2: operation than having your own business. I've watched like the
- 50:54Speaker 2: coaching style there. Luke Walton's our head coach and he's
- 50:59Speaker 2: I'm a huge fan, and I did not know him
- 51:01Speaker 2: going in. I knew a lot of the other powers
- 51:02Speaker 2: that be before I got there, but I did not
- 51:04Speaker 2: know Luke. And watching him run this young, overly talented
- 51:11Speaker 2: teams again, it's being around high achievers, right, These young
- 51:17Speaker 2: guys that come in, our young draft picks, our vets,
- 51:22Speaker 2: who weren't you know, It's not like they were ten
- 51:24Speaker 2: fifteen year vets. But the guys who've been there for
- 51:27Speaker 2: a few years, the day in, day out work ethic,
- 51:31Speaker 2: and you go, these guys just do this every single day,
- 51:34Speaker 2: every single night. And that's that's from the top right,
- 51:37Speaker 2: that's from our owner to our GM to our VP
- 51:40Speaker 2: of Basketball Ops to our team president. Those guys are
- 51:42Speaker 2: there every single day. There's not a day off. There's
- 51:46Speaker 2: not there's days where they don't you know, leading up
- 51:48Speaker 2: to the draft where they don't sleep and they're watching
- 51:51Speaker 2: and studying, comparing, and then that goes down and on
- 51:54Speaker 2: the court, those guys are breaking down film and then
- 51:56Speaker 2: creating strategies on the court for for that game and
- 52:01Speaker 2: then the next game and then the next game, and
- 52:03Speaker 2: there's a lot of shape shifting that goes on. And
- 52:06Speaker 2: it's I love to see it. I love to be
- 52:07Speaker 2: part of what these guys are doing and their work ethic.
- 52:12Speaker 2: It's it's cool to see that that translate. Right, nothing's
- 52:15Speaker 2: by accident. None of these successful people, none of these
- 52:18Speaker 2: successful franchises, Nobody falls into that. Nobody backs into that.
- 52:22Speaker 1: You've been doing this for almost thirty years, now, what
- 52:25Speaker 1: would you say is one of the greatest pieces of
- 52:27Speaker 1: advice you've been given since you started.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Wow, two things from two very big movie stars. One
- 52:40Speaker 2: of them said to me, you.
- 52:42Speaker 1: Can't just say that and not tell me who's giving
- 52:44Speaker 1: you these pieces of advice.
- 52:46Speaker 2: I can. Sylvester Sloan was one, and he told me
- 52:51Speaker 2: years ago, don't ever work with anyone for free, don't
- 52:54Speaker 2: ever devalue your service if you If you do that,
- 52:58Speaker 2: they won't respect what you bring and you bring a
- 53:01Speaker 2: lot to the table. And I don't know if that
- 53:04Speaker 2: was just he was saying that in a broad stroke
- 53:07Speaker 2: or he meant me personally, I gonna bring a lot
- 53:09Speaker 2: to the table. Whatever, that's how I took it, and
- 53:11Speaker 2: I think about that a lot.
- 53:12Speaker 1: I'm an entrepreneur here. I don't have a typical nine
- 53:15Speaker 1: to five and there are things I want to do
- 53:17Speaker 1: that I haven't really broken into yet. I just started
- 53:20Speaker 1: doing more moderating of panels around the city and I
- 53:23Speaker 1: love doing it, and it's usually health and fitness related,
- 53:26Speaker 1: but I'm just starting out. And sometimes they're like, well,
- 53:28Speaker 1: we don't have the budget to pay the moderator, and
- 53:31Speaker 1: so do you do it because you want to get
- 53:32Speaker 1: into it more or do you take a step back
- 53:34Speaker 1: and you say, well, I'm more valuable than that. I
- 53:37Speaker 1: don't know the answer.
- 53:38Speaker 2: Or do you say I'm going to learn from this?
- 53:41Speaker 2: I can't believe I get to learn for free. I agree,
- 53:44Speaker 2: I don't have to pay to do it. I would
- 53:47Speaker 2: do that for free. Yeah, I mean that's maybe just
- 53:49Speaker 2: a mind gaming. Just now, we're just semantics. I don't know.
- 53:52Speaker 2: But and I'm not saying, you know, if you're not
- 53:54Speaker 2: someone's handy, you cash for something that it's not worth it,
- 53:57Speaker 2: because sometimes there's a learning experience, so you get paid
- 54:00Speaker 2: that way, and that's not you know, being weak and saying, well,
- 54:03Speaker 2: I couldn't stand up for my money. But yeah, you
- 54:06Speaker 2: decide what's it worth to you? What are you going
- 54:09Speaker 2: to get out of it, whether it's money, connection, entre experience,
- 54:14Speaker 2: that's that's on you to decide how you're getting paid.
- 54:16Speaker 1: I don't think it's always that number one, that's the
- 54:18Speaker 1: number two.
- 54:20Speaker 2: This was at a super tough time for me, and
- 54:24Speaker 2: it was a big, big, big movie star Bruce Willis,
- 54:28Speaker 2: and he said to me, when you stop worrying about
- 54:32Speaker 2: the thousands, the millions will come. And my dad goes,
- 54:37Speaker 2: don't tell him that he's he's just gonna start blowing
- 54:41Speaker 2: money now, And that's not how it was, Matt. It's
- 54:44Speaker 2: like if some the way I took it, My interpretation
- 54:48Speaker 2: was when there's something that is going to cost you something,
- 54:54Speaker 2: you know, and I see this for gym owners, right, well,
- 54:56Speaker 2: I want that piece of equipment, but you know it's
- 54:58Speaker 2: not in our budget to spend forty six hundred do
- 55:00Speaker 2: a certain leg press. Just buy it. And I'm not
- 55:03Speaker 2: saying be be frivolous with it, but just get it
- 55:06Speaker 2: and it's going to pay back. It's gonna I've never
- 55:08Speaker 2: had a problem with the equipment. Just put it in
- 55:11Speaker 2: the gym. It pays back. People see that you're paying
- 55:13Speaker 2: into your own environment and they're going to benefit from
- 55:16Speaker 2: and they're going to talk about it, and then that's
- 55:17Speaker 2: going to bring you another client eventually that I think
- 55:19Speaker 2: pays for itself before you know it.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Would you say that also translates kind of on a
- 55:23Speaker 1: on a human level, like someone that's willing to give
- 55:25Speaker 1: back to themselves then also better for the people that
- 55:28Speaker 1: they're around.
- 55:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and I hadn't. I was thinking I had my
- 55:32Speaker 2: gym owner had on. But yeah, I do think that's true.
- 55:34Speaker 2: Just stop worrying about all those you know, Tip the
- 55:38Speaker 2: person when you're when someone gives you a service, don't
- 55:41Speaker 2: be don't be cheap. It's super unattractive. The money is
- 55:45Speaker 2: going to come back, right, it's if you're a karma
- 55:48Speaker 2: person or energy all that, it's going to come back.
- 55:51Speaker 2: Don't be. Don't be Scrooge McDuck. That was a that
- 55:55Speaker 2: was a cartoon that wasn't real. Don't bring that to life.
- 55:59Speaker 2: I mean, I said too. But it's the people that
- 56:01Speaker 2: say you can do more. It's the people like the
- 56:04Speaker 2: and these and some of these people. I know, some
- 56:06Speaker 2: I don't. But if you think about people in Hollywood,
- 56:10Speaker 2: if you think about people in sports, Bo Jackson playing
- 56:13Speaker 2: two sports, Deon Sanders two sports, right, guys who were
- 56:16Speaker 2: capable of able women also to play multiple sports, and
- 56:20Speaker 2: they just you can't do that, Yes you can. You know,
- 56:23Speaker 2: you think about the guys. Look at Bob Saggett, look
- 56:26Speaker 2: at Ello cool J. Look at Chloe, look at Dwayne Johnson,
- 56:29Speaker 2: look at these people who have won two three shows.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Look at Lebron James. What he's doing now, he's playing basketball,
- 56:36Speaker 2: he's producing shows. I just saw yesterday he sold a screenplay.
- 56:39Speaker 2: I mean, do it. You can, just you can do
- 56:44Speaker 2: it if you want to go after it. And that's
- 56:46Speaker 2: not a pitch, that's not the raw raw. I'm not
- 56:49Speaker 2: that guy. But oh I can't do this, Yes you can.
- 56:53Speaker 3: You can.
- 56:53Speaker 2: You are probably not using your time as efficiently or
- 56:59Speaker 2: judiciously as you could be using your time.
- 57:03Speaker 1: You look back at the guy who's building his own gym. Now,
- 57:10Speaker 1: what is one piece of advice you would have offered
- 57:13Speaker 1: yourself back at the beginning.
- 57:17Speaker 2: Take care of your family. Pay attention to your kids,
- 57:23Speaker 2: spend time with your spouse, Try to get them to
- 57:27Speaker 2: understand what you're doing instead of feeling like you're on
- 57:30Speaker 2: an island and only you can handle your little gym problems.
- 57:34Speaker 2: And I do use that in a pejorative way, because
- 57:38Speaker 2: really they are little gym problems. I stressed out before.
- 57:42Speaker 2: I probably snapped at my kids. I probably got over
- 57:46Speaker 2: excited about the internet going out or a piece of
- 57:49Speaker 2: equipment not working, and I should have maybe taken it
- 57:53Speaker 2: more in strive. But maybe that comes with the desire
- 57:55Speaker 2: to have it all be perfect, to give that experience,
- 58:00Speaker 2: institute the clients that come in that I feel like
- 58:02Speaker 2: are paying for that and deserve that experience. Holy shit,
- 58:06Speaker 2: I feel like I'm in a therapy session. I gotta
- 58:08Speaker 2: lie down on a couch. Well.
- 58:10Speaker 1: Sadly, our therapy session is coming to a close, Gunnard,
- 58:13Speaker 1: thanks so much for coming in today.
