- 0:02Welcome in to a very exciting episode of The Scene.
- 0:05I am your host, Bubba Starts, and with me today is my friend Nikki, who is the founder of Tokyo
- 0:10Tours.
- 0:10Welcome to the show, Nikki.
- 0:12Thank you for having me.
- 0:14I'm happy to be here.
- 0:16Well and I intentionally left your last name out because we found out that I couldn't
- 0:20pronounce it properly.
- 0:21Yes.
- 0:22My full name is Nikki van Ingen Schoenau.
- 0:25I'm a a poor Dutch nobility.
- 0:31How fun.
- 0:32But you are not not living in Europe anymore.
- 0:36Correct?
- 0:37Yes.
- 0:38I am.
- 0:38In 2011, I moved to Tokyo, and I lived there for ten years.
- 0:44And that's where I founded Tokyo Tours back in 02/2013 when I started to do guided tours on
- 0:53the advice of a friend of mine.
- 0:55And then in 2020, my business was supposed to have the best year ever because of the
- 1:03Olympics.
- 1:04So I was like, oh, okay.
- 1:06There's this COVID thing going on, but, I mean, they've poured so much money in the Olympics.
- 1:11They're not going to cancel the effing Olympics.
- 1:14Come on.
- 1:15And then they canceled it.
- 1:17And then they did.
- 1:18Yeah.
- 1:18Yes.
- 1:19So I was like, oh, okay.
- 1:21Well, I've been here for ten years.
- 1:23I'm kind of fed up with everything, and maybe this is a good time to go home.
- 1:27I'm starting to get broke.
- 1:28So at least if I go back to Amsterdam, there's still semblance of a chance that I might find
- 1:35some gainful employment and be able to dig myself out of this financial hole.
- 1:41So I did that.
- 1:42And since 02/2018, I have a partner for Tokyo Tours.
- 1:48I asked one of my guides that had been working for me since 2015, would you care to sell the
- 1:57business for me?
- 1:58And she said, no.
- 1:59That's terrible idea.
- 2:01I wouldn't dream about it.
- 2:02But would you consider having me on as a partner?
- 2:06And then I was like, that sounds good.
- 2:09What do you have in mind?
- 2:11So she lives in Tokyo, and she's married to a Japanese guy, has two Japanese kids or half.
- 2:19And she does all the planning and all the admin and all of that.
- 2:22So I don't necessarily have to be there to run the business because she does most of the
- 2:27operational stuff from Tokyo.
- 2:30So it's actually a benefit that I'm here because most of the travel agents that we work
- 2:35with are actually situated in Europe.
- 2:40So it's easy for me to hop on over and, like, how are things going?
- 2:44Are you guys still happy with our service?
- 2:47Is there anything we can improve on?
- 2:49Or if I have new ideas or new business ventures, I can talk to them like, oh, now we
- 2:55also offer private drivers.
- 2:58So if you guys want that instead of taking the subway or train, then we can do that as well.
- 3:05So, yeah, it it works really well.
- 3:07I'm so happy to be back in The Netherlands where everyone is like, I effing hate you
- 3:14instead of Japanese people just like, oh, And behind your back, you're like, look.
- 3:27After ten years of niceties, you were over it.
- 3:33Yeah.
- 3:33I don't ever wanna see a polite
- 3:35person again.
- 3:36Yes.
- 3:39I hate you too.
- 3:43You sound American.
- 3:44Yeah.
- 3:45Well, I'm more like, oh, we have the Dutch directness.
- 3:49Like, we'll just I mean, you can go up to your boss, and he can say, you know what, Ben?
- 3:55You're a fucking asshole.
- 3:56And then he's like, well, you know, you have a point.
- 3:59Let's talk about it.
- 4:02No wonder I get along with the Dutch so well.
- 4:05Yes.
- 4:06We tell it like it is.
- 4:07We get straight to the point.
- 4:10Like, in Japan, it's like, oh, the weather is slowly changing.
- 4:15The skies are becoming gray.
- 4:17I sometimes see a snowflake falling down, and they go on for, like, three hours.
- 4:22And then finally, okay.
- 4:24Well, maybe we should talk about business.
- 4:26I think we have five minutes left, or maybe we should schedule this for another time.
- 4:31Like, oh my god.
- 4:32What have I been doing here?
- 4:34Just a different speed on that island, aren't they?
- 4:37Oh, yes.
- 4:38It's all I don't know if you've seen that series, Shogun.
- 4:43No.
- 4:43I haven't.
- 4:44Oh, it's really good.
- 4:45It's on Disney plus, but it it the only thing I didn't like about it, there's one foreigner in
- 4:52there.
- 4:53And in one situation, he's talking in perfect Japanese with also good pronunciation, I must
- 5:00say.
- 5:00And then the next scene, he's like, you, not go, not write.
- 5:05And, like, what?
- 5:06You were just talking, like, full sentences.
- 5:09Get the other voice over guy back in here.
- 5:12Yeah.
- 5:13And suddenly, you're like, no go.
- 5:15No go.
- 5:15I'm like, what?
- 5:17That doesn't make any sense.
- 5:19But other than that, they really showed, like, one guy made a fool of himself.
- 5:24Sorry.
- 5:24This is a spoiler alert.
- 5:27And his entire bloodline had to be erased, which is a thing in Japan.
- 5:33So nowadays, they will not tell you to commit seppuku, so cut your stomach, pull out your
- 5:40bowels, and then someone chops your head.
- 5:43But instead, you need to shave off all your hair, and you need to bow down and, like, oh,
- 5:49post trades.
- 5:50I'm so sorry.
- 5:51Oh my god.
- 5:52Please forgive me.
- 5:53Oh.
- 5:54So yeah.
- 5:55I would never make it in that culture.
- 5:57I little backstory on me, Nikki.
- 5:59I did a couple years in prison for selling pot.
- 6:02You should have gone to Amsterdam.
- 6:06You never would have been arrested.
- 6:08Where are you,
- 6:09Well, the problem there, Nikki, is that I never would have left.
- 6:14Probably.
- 6:15Yeah.
- 6:15A friend of mine who's French told me that, apparently, a lot of French people, especially
- 6:22guys, come and live in The Netherlands for a while because it's part of the EU, so they
- 6:27don't have to apply for anything.
- 6:30And they do stupid call center work that just pays the bills.
- 6:36So on the weekends, they can be stoned the whole weekend long.
- 6:39And then come Monday, they try and sober up.
- 6:42And if not, they call in sick because you don't have sick days here in Netherlands.
- 6:47You can just say, oh, I think I have burnout and just stay home for six months.
- 6:54What a world.
- 6:56A world.
- 6:57Yeah.
- 6:58If you haven't had a burnout yet, you're not part of the club.
- 7:01Come on.
- 7:03My well, I guess I did have a I did have a burnout, and then I spent two years in prison
- 7:07just kinda hanging out, reading books.
- 7:09So it got me better.
- 7:11Oh, well, yeah, that works.
- 7:13Whatever is your process.
- 7:15Well, the year before that, Nikki, I was in Mexico on the run from going to prison and
- 7:22living essentially in a third world, playing my guitar to feed my family, making more doing
- 7:29that than I was doing construction on the highway.
- 7:32I was very humbled.
- 7:34Before I came back and went to prison, I was humbled further.
- 7:37So but it gave me a lot of perspective.
- 7:39It it allowed me to travel internationally.
- 7:42Right?
- 7:42I I can say that I've, you know, played music and I've traveled, and my son was actually born
- 7:48there.
- 7:48He's the palest, blondest haired, blue eyed Mexican you'll ever meet in your life.
- 7:54But I love it.
- 7:55I love all the people there were so nice to us and so and I mean, part of that was probably
- 8:01because we're the only white people they've ever seen in their lives.
- 8:04We were pretty far in.
- 8:06We weren't on the border or anything like that or in a touristy area.
- 8:10And it was an incredible experience that I would never, you know, trade for anything, but
- 8:14when it was time to go, it was time to go.
- 8:17Exactly.
- 8:18Yeah.
- 8:18Right?
- 8:19But that's what I feel about the whole Latin culture.
- 8:22You know?
- 8:22I've been to Brazil, and there were people that were working at the hotel.
- 8:28And they asked me, like, you wanna go out with us?
- 8:30I said, okay.
- 8:31Fine.
- 8:32So we went out.
- 8:33The we were just outside.
- 8:35They bought one bottle of beer, and there were, like, eight people, and we were all sharing one
- 8:40beer and just went around, and you take one sip.
- 8:43And I was like, oh my god.
- 8:45Please allow me to buy you all beers.
- 8:47This is crazy.
- 8:49Come on.
- 8:49He goes, no.
- 8:50No.
- 8:50No.
- 8:51You're here.
- 8:51You're our grass.
- 8:52You're not going to pay for anything.
- 8:54I'm like, this doesn't make any sense.
- 8:57I love you guys so much.
- 8:59It's beautiful.
- 9:01And, yeah, it's nice to hear that it extends through the whole of Latin America as well.
- 9:06Where that was just empty.
- 9:07How did you refill that?
- 9:08You didn't even move.
- 9:12Oh, yeah.
- 9:12I'm a total addict.
- 9:14I mean, that's my only vice.
- 9:17I rarely use drugs.
- 9:21I don't drink much, but if there's no Diet Coke in the house, the horns come out.
- 9:28I I definitely got addicted to coffee when I was in Mexico.
- 9:33It's the first time I really had good coffee.
- 9:36And then when I came back to prison, I mean, that's kind of all you got.
- 9:39Right?
- 9:39And it's all just, like, the ground up freeze dried stuff, instant coffee.
- 9:46But, man, when you're sober, right, and nobody's doing well, I mean, they shouldn't be.
- 9:51I didn't do any drugs in there.
- 9:52Other people may have, but that coffee's that little bit of something where you're like, I
- 9:57kinda got a buzz right now.
- 9:59Oh, wow.
- 10:00Yeah.
- 10:00I know what you mean.
- 10:02I mean, I was breastfeeding my daughter for three and a half years before.
- 10:07I was like, get off me.
- 10:09Go away, demon child.
- 10:11Three and a half years is a long time.
- 10:13Kudos to you.
- 10:14Yeah.
- 10:15Yeah.
- 10:16I thought, oh, at some point, she's going to say, like, oh, I don't need it anymore, mommy.
- 10:21But, no, she kept coming until I was like, no.
- 10:23No.
- 10:24Don't touch me.
- 10:25Those are my boobs.
- 10:26Give them back.
- 10:27Yeah.
- 10:28Get your own.
- 10:29And then finally, I drank coffee for the first time after, like, four years, including the
- 10:35pregnancy, and I was like, oh my god.
- 10:38What is this crazy, guys?
- 10:40Have we all been getting this high on this stuff the whole time?
- 10:44Yeah.
- 10:44Exactly.
- 10:45How incredible.
- 10:47How I don't even know where we're at in this conversation, Nikki.
- 10:50I am enjoying this so much.
- 10:52Yeah.
- 10:53Me too.
- 10:53It's like ADHD on coffee.
- 10:55Like, ah.
- 10:58How nice.
- 10:59Well
- 10:59Adderall is this.
- 11:00Yeah.
- 11:01Right.
- 11:01Well, yeah, you you forget.
- 11:04And that's what people you know, we have another show called Get Better Together where I
- 11:08share a lot more of, you know, the personal things that I've been through and kind of that.
- 11:14It became an outlet because a twenty minute conversation isn't enough to kind of tie it all
- 11:18together.
- 11:19Right?
- 11:19It takes a long time.
- 11:21But we forget that, you know, especially as Americans, we're so addicted to everything.
- 11:27Right?
- 11:28If it's not coffee or soda or beer, it's this stupid thing.
- 11:33Right?
- 11:33And it's, you know, it's it's just wild how and it's just the brain chemistry.
- 11:40Right?
- 11:40And and I don't think anybody understands that more than people who are, you know, especially
- 11:44in Amsterdam specifically, that you're surrounded by kind of a culture of that.
- 11:52And that's not necessarily you know, I'm in very rural South Dakota.
- 11:56I live in a town of about a thousand people.
- 11:58The next town over is a few hundred in in all directions, and it takes you a half hour to get
- 12:03to a town of 15,000 people.
- 12:06Right?
- 12:06Wow.
- 12:07Where if you're in Downtown Amsterdam, that could be 15,000 people on your block.
- 12:13By by bike.
- 12:14Right.
- 12:16Trying to run you over.
- 12:18Well, you guys have bicycle day, so bikes are very popular.
- 12:22Oh, yeah.
- 12:23Yeah.
- 12:23Yeah.
- 12:23There's more bikes here than there are people.
- 12:26Wow.
- 12:27There's more cows than there are people in South Dakota.
- 12:30Oh, wow.
- 12:30Do you tip them over, or is that just a legend?
- 12:33Cows are big, Nikki.
- 12:35You don't wanna go messing around with those.
- 12:38We got enough dangers.
- 12:39Yesterday, it was minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit with the wind chill.
- 12:44What is that in normal speak?
- 12:46I have no idea.
- 12:48What do you mean normal speak?
- 12:51Like Celsius, like the rest of the world does.
- 12:53Oh, I can tell you.
- 12:54Paradigm.
- 12:55That was the hardest part about traveling internationally.
- 12:58Right?
- 12:59Everything was in everything was in metric.
- 13:01And being American, right, we're so up our own ass that we don't even bother to learn it.
- 13:07Right?
- 13:07So you're having to convert in your mind everything, kilograms, the pounds.
- 13:11Luckily for me, I had been in the drug trade for a little while, so I
- 13:14don't how many one k.
- 13:18So funny.
- 13:19Oh my gosh, Nikki.
- 13:21I'm having so much fun talking to you, but I don't wanna keep you forever today.
- 13:26You said you have some new stuff coming up.
- 13:29Why don't we talk about your new ventures that you're hoping to have out this year?
- 13:34Yes.
- 13:35So I have two different projects coming up.
- 13:38Well, three, actually.
- 13:39So I'm almost done writing a guidebook for Japan.
- 13:44But what I noticed with the clients that come to Japan, even if their whole trip is planned
- 13:51out, is that they have no idea how long it takes to go from a to b even within Tokyo.
- 13:58Like, what can you do in one day?
- 14:00What's feasible?
- 14:01What makes sense?
- 14:04So we have this service where it's called meet and assist.
- 14:09And we pick them up at the airport, and most people have a Japan Rail Pass.
- 14:14So you have unlimited travel in Japan for, like, one week or two weeks, but you still need
- 14:20to reserve the seats.
- 14:22You don't have to pay for it, but you need the tickets or you might end up standing.
- 14:28So we go and help them to exchange the RailPlus voucher and then buy or reserve the seats, and
- 14:36then I have to translate for them.
- 14:39Like, okay.
- 14:41They're asking you what time do you wanna take the train to Osaka.
- 14:46And they're like, oh, I have no idea.
- 14:49Should I stay longer in Tokyo, or should I be early in Osaka?
- 14:54Like, well, that is all up to you.
- 14:56You know?
- 14:56Like, what kind of day do you want?
- 14:58Have you thought about what you want to do?
- 15:00So I saw so many people that were just in pure misery because they had no idea.
- 15:06Like, what should I do?
- 15:08I only have one chance in Japan, and I wanna make the most of it, but I don't know.
- 15:13So I decided to do something different.
- 15:16So this is going to be a three week itinerary.
- 15:20So from the moment you wake up until the moment you go to sleep, everything is planned out, and
- 15:25there's, like, a time slot for everything.
- 15:28So this is how long it's going to take.
- 15:31This is how much it's going to cost.
- 15:34This is how you get there.
- 15:36This is why it's fun.
- 15:38Here is where you can reserve the tickets, and then you go to the next one.
- 15:42And this is where you have lunch, and this is where you have dinner.
- 15:45So, of course, you don't have to keep to the plan exactly.
- 15:50And I also have some other recommendations, like three of the best cooking workshops in
- 15:55Tokyo or three of the best rooftop restaurants in Osaka or three of the best places to go
- 16:06dancing in Roppongi.
- 16:08So you can mix and match if you prefer.
- 16:11Right.
- 16:12You have options.
- 16:13Yeah.
- 16:14Yeah.
- 16:14Yeah.
- 16:14Exactly.
- 16:14But, I mean, the normal guidebooks are like, okay.
- 16:17So this is Tokyo, and these are all of the areas in Tokyo, and this is what you can do in
- 16:22each area.
- 16:23But then you still have no idea.
- 16:25Like, what am I going to do all day?
- 16:26Right.
- 16:26It's almost too many options.
- 16:28You so you you're a curator and a facilitator of people's vacations because
- 16:34Yeah.
- 16:35The last thing you wanna do when you spent all this money to get to this place and now are
- 16:41there a lot do people do Japanese people speak English there?
- 16:44Like, in Europe, pretty much it feels like everybody has English in their back pocket and
- 16:49and can meet you somewhere and at least kind of, you know, deliver a message.
- 16:53Right?
- 16:53Mhmm.
- 16:54I was in Mexico and nobody really spoke English.
- 16:56Right?
- 16:56So is it more like, you know, though where you show up and if you don't have Japanese in your
- 17:02back pocket or a tour guide, you're you're kinda lost.
- 17:06Well, it depends on, where you are in Tokyo.
- 17:09Because in Tokyo, there's, like, 36,000,000 people living there.
- 17:14So every area is kind of like a city in itself.
- 17:19So if you go to Shibuya or Azerbaijuban or Roppongi, there's a better likelihood that
- 17:26there's going to be people that can speak English.
- 17:29But in other cities like Kyoto or like Takayama, then sometimes even at the hotels,
- 17:37they're not even able to speak any English.
- 17:40I went to Koyasan.
- 17:41That's, the birthplace of Buddhism in Japan.
- 17:46I had two groups with me, and they couldn't speak any English.
- 17:49So I was just translating the whole time that the we were staying at this monastery, and this
- 17:54Buddhist priest was explaining all about Buddhism and about the food and about the
- 18:01morning rituals they do there.
- 18:02And I was just, oh, okay.
- 18:03Go.
- 18:04Go.
- 18:04Please let me explain.
- 18:07Slow down, man.
- 18:08But
- 18:08yeah.
- 18:08Slow down.
- 18:10How incredible, Nikki.
- 18:12I could keep you on for hours and hours and hours, and I feel like we could just talk and
- 18:16talk and talk.
- 18:18But why don't you go ahead and tell everybody where they can find you and how they can have
- 18:23you help them plan their next trip to Japan?
- 18:26Yeah.
- 18:26So, basically, on every social media platform, you can find me under Tokyo Tours, and Tokyo
- 18:35Tours is spelled the Dutch way.
- 18:37So Tokyo is T O I O, not with a Y, and tours, T O U R S, as one word.
- 18:46And I have my website, www.tokiotours.nl or tokiotours.com.
- 18:52And you can also follow me on Instagram on my personal page or my business page.
- 18:58Both is okay.
- 19:00That's Nikki, n I c k I, underscore Amsterdam.
- 19:05Well, Nikki, thank you so much for coming on the show today and really giving us some
- 19:11culture.
- 19:12Oh, thank you.
- 19:13Thank you for having me on.
- 19:14It was a blast.
- 19:15Yeah.
- 19:15Thanks for being part of the scene.
- 19:17Yeah.
- 19:18Thanks.
