Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Now I've had a great morning because I've gotten to
- 0:03Speaker 1: talk about sport a.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Lot today and joining me in the studio right now to.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Tell us a little bit more about a couple of
- 0:10Speaker 1: young AFL teams heading away for well for the Nationals.
- 0:15Speaker 1: So the under twelve teams for both the girls and
- 0:17Speaker 1: boys heading away for the Nationals a little bit later
- 0:20Speaker 1: this year and in the studio to tell us a
- 0:21Speaker 1: bit more is Jeff Cameron, also known as Sharky. Good
- 0:26Speaker 1: morning to you, Sharky, good morning, good having you in
- 0:28Speaker 1: the studio.
- 0:29Speaker 2: And Cam Eilers. Well, everybody around the territory knows Cam,
- 0:33Speaker 2: don't they just about how are you mate?
- 0:37Speaker 3: Very well?
- 0:37Speaker 1: Thank you, great to have you both in the studio now. Cam,
- 0:40Speaker 1: you'd contacted me a couple of weeks ago and said
- 0:42Speaker 1: that there's both the girls and the boys teams about
- 0:45Speaker 1: fifty young girls and boys heading away to represent the
- 0:48Speaker 1: Northern Territory at the Under twelve AFL Carnival and said any.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Chance we can have a chat to you about it.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I love this stuff.
- 0:54Speaker 1: I love hearing about young people that are doing really
- 0:56Speaker 1: good stuff, particularly heading into state competing at whatever sport
- 1:02Speaker 1: they're you know, they're choosing, but particularly in something like
- 1:04Speaker 1: the AFL, so absolutely was keen to have you both
- 1:07Speaker 1: in the studio. Now when do they go away?
- 1:11Speaker 3: Firstly, fifth of August we had head off to Aubrey
- 1:14Speaker 3: were longer and Aubrey in South Wales.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Wonderful stuff. And so is there fifty of these.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Kids forty six kids two that are playing two umpires, yeah,
- 1:27Speaker 3: and then six staffs.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Oh how great, So a couple of umpires as well.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Are they the same age group.
- 1:32Speaker 3: A little bit older teenagers, so they're part of AFO
- 1:35Speaker 3: and t umpiring.
- 1:36Speaker 1: It's a massive amount of kids to be taking away
- 1:39Speaker 1: nearly fifty of these young people, and no doubt like plenty,
- 1:44Speaker 1: like plenty of training going into it.
- 1:45Speaker 2: When do you start the training?
- 1:47Speaker 3: Training starts next week Monday at Palmerston and then Wednesdays
- 1:50Speaker 3: in darn at Tripstone Middle School.
- 1:53Speaker 1: And so plenty of training obviously, you know, bringing the
- 1:56Speaker 1: teams together, making sure that they that they're working easimply
- 2:00Speaker 1: as a team when they go away and play. But
- 2:02Speaker 1: also it's pretty expensive to take away that volume of kids,
- 2:07Speaker 1: like that's a massive team. When you actually look at
- 2:09Speaker 1: it logistically, cam you are sort of looking at doing
- 2:13Speaker 1: some fundraising efforts as well, aren't you.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely, Look, obviously it's a great opportunity, you know
- 2:19Speaker 4: for all these young boys and girls to represent the
- 2:21Speaker 4: NT and obviously playing sport, and we all know how
- 2:25Speaker 4: important sport is, you know, the development, you know, the
- 2:28Speaker 4: team building, the socializing, you know, the well being, all
- 2:31Speaker 4: of that aspect. And now the great thing about this
- 2:33Speaker 4: team as well, obviously you mentioned it's the NT team.
- 2:36Speaker 4: It genuinely is an NT team. So we've got players
- 2:39Speaker 4: and Jeff knows exactly where they're from, but Ellis springs
- 2:43Speaker 4: from Catherine, from TenneT Creek, from arnhem Land and then
- 2:47Speaker 4: also Darwin as well.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So taking that into account and I will go back
- 2:52Speaker 1: to that fundraising in a set camp. But taking that
- 2:54Speaker 1: into account, mate, how hard is it to actually.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Train them all when they're from everywhere?
- 3:00Speaker 3: So we've done. I've done like a training program that
- 3:03Speaker 3: I send to the parents and caregivers and teachers that
- 3:07Speaker 3: are at the schools with these kids in Alice and
- 3:09Speaker 3: Elliott and Tenant and Baranga Nolan boy, so they're on
- 3:14Speaker 3: the same page as knowing what we're doing in the city. Yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 3: but obviously we've got to come together just before we
- 3:21Speaker 3: go away and hopefully snag a couple of victories when
- 3:24Speaker 3: we go down.
- 3:25Speaker 1: How many days they're going to have to actually train
- 3:28Speaker 1: together though before before you go away and start competing
- 3:31Speaker 1: against other teams one day. That's so Northern territories, Like
- 3:37Speaker 1: all these other teams from other states, they have been
- 3:39Speaker 1: training together for months. You know, you'll get these new
- 3:43Speaker 1: South Wales teams that play and train together all the time.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And then for us here in the territory, it's just
- 3:47Speaker 1: so different, but it's so unique and it's really what
- 3:50Speaker 1: makes us special as well, isn't it.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I toutally agree.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Now, Cam going back to that fundraising, particularly then when
- 3:58Speaker 1: you're talking about kids from places like Elliott, Barunga, bringing
- 4:03Speaker 1: them all together and getting them interstate for this carnival,
- 4:07Speaker 1: it's going to be pretty expensive processes Nash.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, Look it's you know obviously to take that
- 4:13Speaker 4: many young boys and girls away into state is not
- 4:18Speaker 4: a cheap exercise. So what Sharky and I sort of
- 4:22Speaker 4: got together and how can we ensure that no matter
- 4:26Speaker 4: where these players are coming from, you know, there's no
- 4:29Speaker 4: financial burden. So for them, they've done the hard work
- 4:32Speaker 4: by getting selected, so we want to get together and
- 4:35Speaker 4: try and raise as much money as we can to
- 4:37Speaker 4: make sure that you know, whatever we raise, the overall
- 4:41Speaker 4: cost will get reduced. Therefore the individual cost will be
- 4:44Speaker 4: reduced as well. So we just want to make sure
- 4:47Speaker 4: that no player is going to have a burden of
- 4:49Speaker 4: worrying about finances. So you know, we've been very, very
- 4:53Speaker 4: lucky so far. We've got a number of different organizations
- 4:56Speaker 4: and people that have contributed money, which is which is great,
- 5:00Speaker 4: so you know, and I suppose it's accessing your allies,
- 5:04Speaker 4: So that's why I've reached out to.
- 5:05Speaker 2: You, Katie.
- 5:06Speaker 4: You know, I called them a good mate Joel Bowden,
- 5:09Speaker 4: and he said absolutely, cam lock me in for some
- 5:12Speaker 4: contribution there. And he's also going to donate a guernsey.
- 5:15Speaker 4: So we're going to run an auction night and have
- 5:20Speaker 4: a whole heap of different auction items that will run
- 5:23Speaker 4: raise more money. And it's for such a brilliant opportunity
- 5:28Speaker 4: for these young kids, you know, to see them go
- 5:30Speaker 4: away represent where they come from, be super proud. And
- 5:34Speaker 4: you know, others even like ours is spending some time
- 5:37Speaker 4: with Tash Files yesterday and she's happy to contribute as well,
- 5:40Speaker 4: which is great. Nicole Brown or have done a fair
- 5:43Speaker 4: bit of work with as well. She's going to contribute
- 5:45Speaker 4: to this as well. So it's great to see that,
- 5:49Speaker 4: you know, when you do reach out and a great
- 5:52Speaker 4: opportunity people really want to get behind some real positives.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Now, if there is anybody out there listening this morning
- 5:57Speaker 1: that thinks, hey, we'd love to be involved or we
- 6:00Speaker 1: would love to, you know, to try and support these
- 6:02Speaker 1: young people, they can get in contact with us here
- 6:04Speaker 1: at the station or is there something else that they
- 6:06Speaker 1: can do.
- 6:07Speaker 3: They can contact your contact sport of ed YEP the
- 6:11Speaker 3: head office there and speak to Jen Jennifer and she
- 6:15Speaker 3: will do up a whatever amount they want to donate
- 6:17Speaker 3: or sponsor and do an invoice up and send it
- 6:20Speaker 3: out and then go from.
- 6:20Speaker 1: There now to really I guess make it hit home
- 6:24Speaker 1: for people that are listening. This is for these young
- 6:27Speaker 1: kids in the under twelve age group. The reality is
- 6:29Speaker 1: it's the first time for a lot of them that
- 6:31Speaker 1: they're going to be going away. And then when you
- 6:33Speaker 1: look at the fact that they're coming from some of
- 6:35Speaker 1: those more remote areas of the Northern Territory or even
- 6:38Speaker 1: you know, even if they're coming from Alice Springs, Catherine,
- 6:41Speaker 1: even Darwin. Your first time away in a lot of
- 6:43Speaker 1: cases without your parents as well, going away for a carnival.
- 6:48Speaker 2: It's such an enormous opportunity for them, is Nash.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yeah totally. It's pretty cool they get the opportunity to
- 6:54Speaker 3: do that. But like Cam talked about before, I really
- 6:57Speaker 3: wanted the kids that got selected to you because they
- 7:00Speaker 3: can go. Yeah, because they can't afford to go. So
- 7:03Speaker 3: that was the whole idea of promoting it and trying
- 7:06Speaker 3: to build it up. Ye. Yeah, everyone to go.
- 7:08Speaker 2: It's such an important point to make.
- 7:10Speaker 3: You know.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I was a girl who grew up in Mount I,
- 7:12Speaker 1: so we'd go away on our troops and you'd have
- 7:14Speaker 1: kids going from Djara, Dumage, Bullia, all different types of
- 7:18Speaker 1: locations and in some cases, you know, if you didn't
- 7:21Speaker 1: get that support, they weren't able to go. And for
- 7:24Speaker 1: some of us, you know, they're going up the escalators
- 7:26Speaker 1: for the first time in their life when they're arriving
- 7:29Speaker 1: in Brizzy, and it's an incredible opportunity for kids, and
- 7:33Speaker 1: I just think it's really important that they get the
- 7:35Speaker 1: chance to do that. Hey, before I let you both go,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I know that there was a game yesterday as well.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Tell us what that was all about.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Yeah, so yeah, we had a ripping football match yesterday
- 7:45Speaker 4: against the Saint Pat's College down in Ballarat. So what
- 7:48Speaker 4: happened was we had a klontaf N t Rep side
- 7:54Speaker 4: come together and again it was a sign that was
- 7:56Speaker 4: from players from Alice Springs, TenneT Creek, East Arnham, Landry,
- 8:00Speaker 4: Good Millennia and Dale. So we brought to our year tens,
- 8:03Speaker 4: elevens and twelve lads together and they all sort of
- 8:09Speaker 4: well met yesterday then jumped on a footy field and
- 8:12Speaker 4: played against Saint Pat's yesterday afternoon. It was an absolutely
- 8:16Speaker 4: brilliant occasion, terrific outcomes for everyone and you know for
- 8:20Speaker 4: the boys to represent obviously quantat Nty as a whole,
- 8:24Speaker 4: but then also for the Saint Pat's lads to be
- 8:27Speaker 4: a part of, you know, a great top end experience
- 8:31Speaker 4: involving some footy. But the other really good aspect to
- 8:35Speaker 4: that whole immersion camp for them was that they actually
- 8:38Speaker 4: got involved in our Quontaft academies as well, so giving
- 8:41Speaker 4: back and going to our primary programs and doing some
- 8:44Speaker 4: big buddy mentoring activities with them. So it's really building
- 8:49Speaker 4: the capacity of their students, but also the opportunities for
- 8:53Speaker 4: our students as well to mingle, get to know them,
- 8:56Speaker 4: and I suppose playing footy yesterday. They operate at a
- 9:00Speaker 4: pretty high level down there at Saint Pats and for
- 9:02Speaker 4: our boys to sort of test themselves.
- 9:04Speaker 3: It was a really good.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Experience, wonderful.
- 9:06Speaker 3: They were very talented.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Ah, good stuff, Well, good on you.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Thank you so much for joining us in the studio
- 9:13Speaker 1: this morning, Jeff Cameron and also cam iileank. Great to
- 9:15Speaker 1: have you both in here and we'll catch up again
- 9:18Speaker 1: before the kids head away.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Awesome, thank you, good stuff, Thank you.
