- 0:00What's up guys? Welcome to Three Up Three Down,
- 0:03our first post season show. As always, I am Jackson McNeil
- 0:08on the Charlie Marlow YouTube channel and on TikTok.
- 0:12We're going to talk ups and downs.
- 0:14As always, we're going to talk a little bit about this mysterious
- 0:17press conference the Cardinals are having tomorrow.
- 0:19That's actually not that mysterious.
- 0:20I can tell you what's probably going to happen, at least my
- 0:23guess we can. We're going to recap the season.
- 0:27We're going to talk a little bit about some of the roster
- 0:28decisions they need to make this next season and, and where I
- 0:32think they're headed. So let's start with the downs.
- 0:34As always, my first down and I'm going to try and kind of get
- 0:37these to be more of a macro topic, but I'm going to talk
- 0:39Alec Burleson. Alec Burleson OPS 479 in
- 0:42September. If you thought it was bad, you
- 0:44were right. It was worse than that.
- 0:47I do think this is really interesting because I think most
- 0:50of us knew and and understood that they were going to move on
- 0:53from Goldschmidt, Katie Wu to reported.
- 0:55I think today that that's going to happen, which duh.
- 1:01So first base can be really interesting position for the
- 1:04next year cuz I do think Burleson is going to get the
- 1:07lion's share of the bats. But I am curious to see if they
- 1:11try to platoon him with say Herrera or Baker, Oregon, some
- 1:16combination or Contreras. You know, Contreras when he was
- 1:19a Cub played all over the field for a little bit.
- 1:21I know he kind of ended up honing in on catcher, but he's
- 1:23an athletic guy. I can see him playing first
- 1:25base. So it'll be really interesting
- 1:27to see what they do there. That I don't know, man.
- 1:32I Burleson, I just, I'm not sure He had a really good first five
- 1:35months, but that last month was so bad.
- 1:36But maybe I'm being unfair. It's only one month.
- 1:38His first five were a lot better.
- 1:40I thought the whole second-half was bad.
- 1:41It was really just September, so TBD on that.
- 1:46I I am interested. Also, my second down is how
- 1:49they're using Herrera. I I, I just thought it was funny
- 1:51he didn't play today. Like I thought this paw haze
- 1:54thing was over. I thought we were going to be
- 1:56done with it. We're not even though these
- 1:57games don't count and we need to get Herrera catching refs.
- 2:01Who cares? We got, you know, pitchers like
- 2:03throwing the paw haze or whatever.
- 2:04We've got to move past that. Herrera needs to catch or he
- 2:08needs to. He needs to be in the lineup UPS
- 2:10800 this year. So, yeah, I'm, I'm curious to
- 2:14see what they do with Herrera. I can see him being a trade
- 2:17piece. You know, I know he can't really
- 2:19handle the running game and, and in the past they were worried
- 2:22about his preparation level. But I think he needs to play.
- 2:24I think he needs to be on this team.
- 2:25He can hit and they they need bats.
- 2:27So I don't know, it felt like a little bit of a lost season for
- 2:30him spending about half the year in Memphis.
- 2:33But we'll see my third down payroll because it's going to go
- 2:38down. I think Bob Nightingale reported
- 2:41that they would look to move on from Sonny Gray.
- 2:43I think they are totally open for business.
- 2:46I would not be surprised if they, I would not be surprised
- 2:50if they like really look at their options all all up and
- 2:54down the roster, both to add and subtract.
- 2:56But you know, one thing I want to preach, and I preach this all
- 2:59the time is Sonny Gray, Wilson, Contreras, Nolan Moronado, they
- 3:02all have no trade clauses. So they can't just go anywhere.
- 3:05They got to, they got to say yes to the trade or you got to pay
- 3:08them to, to, to say yes to the trade.
- 3:09So it's going to be really interesting to see what they do,
- 3:13what they try to do, what they're able to do with those
- 3:16guys because those guys are all good players still.
- 3:18You know, Nolan Arenado had an up and down year, but he still
- 3:21put up 2 1/2 WAR. It's not nothing.
- 3:23And I was down on it, but he did have a good second-half.
- 3:27Contreras obviously can hit. He just needs to stay on the
- 3:29field. And, and really his accident,
- 3:30his injuries were kind of freak accidents with Gray.
- 3:34You guys, I mean, we we beat Sonny Gray to death on this as a
- 3:38topic this year. It was all over the place, you
- 3:40know, did he throw it off innings?
- 3:42But he's really good. I think they keep him.
- 3:46I don't think he moves. You do need like pitching.
- 3:48I don't think they have a lot of starters coming up.
- 3:50I was really happy to see how Mcgreevy pitched today.
- 3:52Thought he was great. I think he you can pencil him in
- 3:56next year. I think you're looking at for
- 3:58guys that are like going to legitimately compete for spots
- 4:01in the rotation. Assuming they do the buyouts
- 4:04that I think they'll do. I think it'll be Gray.
- 4:07I think it'll be Michaelis. I think Max will compete for a
- 4:09spot. That doesn't mean he'll get it.
- 4:11I also wouldn't be shocked if they're like, we just can't do
- 4:13the Steven Matts experience anymore.
- 4:15I wish they wouldn't do the Miles Michaelis experience
- 4:17anymore, but that's $32 million of payroll that they're not
- 4:19going to get rid of. Mcgreevy will get a chance to
- 4:23compete. I really hope Libertar gets a
- 4:24chance to compete for a starting spot.
- 4:26Zach Thompson is still in the organization, believe it or not.
- 4:30So I don't know. It's going to be really
- 4:31interesting to see what they do with the starting pitching.
- 4:34Kyle Gibson, I think is going to be back as well.
- 4:36I do think they're going to pick up that option.
- 4:37I think they were going to pick up.
- 4:38I always kind of thought one of Lynn or Gibson would be back.
- 4:41Gibson had a better year. He stayed healthier.
- 4:43I think Gibson comes back. That's just my gut feel with the
- 4:46payroll too. It's going to be really
- 4:47interesting to see what they do with Helsley because he's going
- 4:50to get paid in arbitration. And they are kind of at the
- 4:54point now where if if they don't think they're going to like
- 4:57really, really contend next year, I think they need to move
- 4:59him because there's not a ton of value in having like an elite
- 5:02closer on a team that doesn't see themselves as major
- 5:05contenders. So get value for him.
- 5:08And I think you could get more for him in the offseason than
- 5:10you could in July because you're giving another team a full
- 5:12season of Ryan Helsley as opposed to two months of Ryan
- 5:15Helsley. And with him being, you know, he
- 5:17has had a lot of injuries in his career, It would be nice to just
- 5:20see if they could get some value for him.
- 5:22If they don't think they're going to compete next year, they
- 5:23think they're going to compete, keep him, ride it out.
- 5:26I wouldn't extend him. I pain relievers is just so
- 5:30tricky And and that would just make me nervous with his injury
- 5:34history, especially. Let's talk UPS.
- 5:38Mason win 15 homers. Just like I told you guys on the
- 5:41very first episode from this same office of three up three
- 5:44down. I told you he was going to hit
- 5:4515 homers and he did. He played 150 games this year.
- 5:48He played through a lot of like ailments.
- 5:50He dealt with his back in the first half.
- 5:51Sounds like he was dealing with some elbow stuff in the
- 5:53second-half. I thought he had a great rookie
- 5:56year. He's not going to win Ricky of
- 5:57the year. We talked about that earlier.
- 5:59But I do think he is a bona fide piece for the future.
- 6:02If I'm in the Cardinals, he's really the only guy that I'm
- 6:04just saying, no, we're not. We're not moving.
- 6:05Mason one period, full stop. Half of his hits were two strike
- 6:09hits. He swings to contact.
- 6:12He's fast, he's got a heck of an alarm.
- 6:13And heck, if the short something doesn't end up working out,
- 6:15we'll just we'll have him pitch my second up.
- 6:19Ryan Helsley. I think it's really cool that he
- 6:21broke the saves record. I was a the 2015 Cardinals are
- 6:24my favorite Cardinals team ever. Those that know, know.
- 6:28And that was the Rosenthal 48 save season.
- 6:31So breaking that record is no joke.
- 6:33And they really needed Helsley this year.
- 6:35I mean, he was nails. I know he blew his save I think
- 6:38the first night of the season. And then I think the only two
- 6:41others he blew, he blew one in Chicago that was bad.
- 6:43And then he blew 2 in Milwaukee. But those were his 22 inning
- 6:48outings where he would come back the next inning after the
- 6:50Cardinals would take the lead and he'd slam the door.
- 6:52I was super impressed. They kept him healthy.
- 6:54He had, he had more innings this year than in 2022 when he was
- 6:57unreal. So happy for Helsley.
- 7:01I think he's going to get paid in arbitration.
- 7:02Like I said, I would move him. That's just my opinion because I
- 7:07think you can get real big league talent for a guy like
- 7:09that. You know, you look at the
- 7:10Orioles, for example, who are going to the playoffs and I, I
- 7:12don't think their bullpen is super set.
- 7:13They DFA Ed Craig Kimbrel 2 weeks ago.
- 7:16They could use a guy like Ryan Helsley.
- 7:18A lot of teams could. And if you're not going to
- 7:20compete, let's talk Paul Goldschmidt and Matt Carpenter
- 7:27and Matt Holiday. So I've been thinking a lot
- 7:29about the Cardinals Hall of Fame because this team doesn't have
- 7:32any real Hall of Famers. It it probably does.
- 7:34I'm being I'm being dramatic. But I do think it's really
- 7:37interesting to see what's going to happen with Goldschmidt and
- 7:40Carpenter, to a lesser extent, getting into the Cardinals Hall
- 7:42of Fame. Last week I put up a graphic on
- 7:44Twitter kind of comparing those three guys and Carpenter,
- 7:48Holiday, Goldschmidt and Holiday was inducted in 22.
- 7:53He made, he got in. So it's I, I'm just really
- 7:56curious to see what happens with, with Carpenter and
- 7:59Goldschmidt because I think those guys are both Cardinals
- 8:00Hall of Farmers. If you compare Holiday and
- 8:03Carpenter, they had very similar stat lines.
- 8:06They both played about 1000 games.
- 8:07You know, they both put up about 25 WAR.
- 8:11They what's funny is all three of them hit between 150 and 160
- 8:15homers as Cardinals. Carpenter hit 159 as of last
- 8:20week, Goldsman had 152 and Holiday hit 156.
- 8:24I just think it's really interesting because the
- 8:27Cardinals all thing like matters to me and those guys are all,
- 8:29they were all like, I mean, Goldsman won an MVP and
- 8:34Carpenter was an MVP level player.
- 8:35I mean, people are going to get mad that I say this.
- 8:37Carpenter was a top ten player in the National League in the 20
- 8:40tens period. Full stop.
- 8:41Matt Carpenter's 2013 is like one of the 10 best seasons of a
- 8:46Cardinals infielder like ever. He had like 80 double s.
- 8:49He hit like 3:30. He and and remember if you guys
- 8:53remember, he wasn't even the starter at the beginning of the
- 8:55year. They made him play second base
- 8:57just to get his bat in Atlanta, but he was not leading off.
- 8:59And then one day they were like, let's just give it a shot.
- 9:00It never ended. He's on Cardinals Hall of Famer
- 9:03to me. Goldsmith's interesting because
- 9:04he's not been a Cardinal as long.
- 9:06He's played 800 game, 800 ish games, but I still think he's a
- 9:10Hall of Famer. 2022 MVP takes the cake for me.
- 9:13He also had two huge home runs against Atlanta and the 2019
- 9:16LDS. He had the one in game one to
- 9:18make it a one run game and then he had the he he and Ozuna went
- 9:22back-to-back in game four off Keichel.
- 9:25He's had some really good moments.
- 9:26The 2022 season was like so much fun because they had the Albert
- 9:30thing going and like Goldie the first five months was like he
- 9:32was like the the guy walking in the flames GIF.
- 9:36It was unbelievable. All he did was Homer.
- 9:38It was like insane. And he he kind of was like the
- 9:42guy that came back in 19 and like really made the org feel
- 9:45like legit again. You know, Ozuna was back in 18,
- 9:48but like he wasn't as good. But Goldie came back and was
- 9:50like, no, like this team has like a dude and Goldschmidt was
- 9:52a dude period. Full stop.
- 9:54Goldie's 19 to 22. Like you got to go back and look
- 9:58at the numbers. He was awesome.
- 9:59He fell off in 23 and then this year we, we, we hammered it to
- 10:02death. He was bad.
- 10:04But that guy, the first five years he was here was nails.
- 10:08So I really think they should both be in.
- 10:10I'll be curious to see what happens with both of them next
- 10:12year. I don't think either of them
- 10:13comes back. I think I would hope this team
- 10:15kind of values the roster spot for young guys.
- 10:17Let them develop. But yeah, overall it was a fun
- 10:21season. My first season creating content
- 10:2483 and 79 obviously would have been a little more fun if
- 10:27they've made the playoffs. There were points in the year.
- 10:30I definitely thought that was possible up until like a week
- 10:32ago. I think they were mathematically
- 10:33eliminated, and I was thinking, whoa, maybe one of the teams
- 10:37gets disqualified and they can make it so 83 and 79.
- 10:42I know a lot of people are drawing parallels to the 2006
- 10:44team. While that team went 83 and 78,
- 10:46they didn't actually play their last game, which they would have
- 10:48won because Carpenter would have pitched.
- 10:51Not a big deal. They would have gone 84 and 78.
- 10:53So yeah, the offseason content is going to come in hot and
- 10:56heavy. We might even do podcasts, who
- 10:59knows? I got to figure that out.
- 11:01Anybody that knows anything about podcasts, let me know.
- 11:04But yeah, thank you guys for watching.
- 11:05Thanks for the support all season.
- 11:06Shout out to Charlie for letting me get on the channel the last
- 11:08couple weeks. Really looking forward to the
- 11:11offseason. I think it's going to be really
- 11:12interesting. It's probably going to be the
- 11:13most interesting one we've had in a long time.
- 11:15So yeah, thank you guys.
