- 2:05Speaker 1: welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian and joining me this week.
- 2:08Speaker 5: Is Steve Vessel of the Louisville Gore Club.
- 2:14Speaker 1: We're coming to you live via digital recording from outside.
- 2:18Speaker 5: It's weird. I made him do it.
- 2:20Speaker 1: It's a little strange, but I was, I mean, it
- 2:22Speaker 1: was kind of like, I forget about these times going
- 2:24Speaker 1: back hundreds of years when I was in school and
- 2:26Speaker 1: it's like, Mr. Meltdown, can we have class outside today?
- 2:30Speaker 1: And I'm like, You kids settle down. We've got a
- 2:32Speaker 1: lot of work to do. We'll stay right in here.
- 2:34Speaker 1: But I'm not Mr.
- 2:36Speaker 5: Meltdown. So I don't have to do that. Professor Meltdown. Doc,
- 2:40Speaker 5: I go by.
- 2:41Speaker 1: But anyway, I was like, yeah, actually, it's not bad out. Now,
- 2:47Speaker 1: for being our creepy Halloween episode, you'd think it'd be chilly.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But it's been like, I don't know, pushing 90 today.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So it once again proves that the scariest thing this
- 2:59Speaker 1: October is that The world is ending. So, I think
- 3:03Speaker 1: we're slowly grinding to a halt on this planet.
- 3:05Speaker 5: It's okay. It was green and bowling green in Halloween.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Well, it is interesting on the, actually, this has got
- 3:14Speaker 1: to be true because it was on a commercial, but
- 3:15Speaker 1: it was an insurance commercial that was like, it's talking
- 3:17Speaker 1: about the fact that those things, those giant like horrible
- 3:23Speaker 1: catastrophes and like natural disasters that only happen like once
- 3:28Speaker 1: every 500 years, this perfect whatever would come together to
- 3:32Speaker 1: be this horrible thing and kill a bunch of people.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Every couple of months we have one of those now.
- 3:37Speaker 5: I love raptures.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, we might. Yeah, end of days, people.
- 3:41Speaker 1: That's all I'm saying.
- 3:42Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 1: But that will not stop us from creepily hanging out
- 3:47Speaker 1: here in the creepy outside where there could be murderers
- 3:51Speaker 1: and killers about and talking about horror movies.
- 3:54Speaker 5: That's okay. I've got a knife.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I carry a blade at all times.
- 3:59Speaker 5: I carry a blade. Just in case. Yeah.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So I was thinking as I was walking outside to
- 4:05Speaker 1: get here.
- 4:06Speaker 5: Fucking sun.
- 4:07Speaker 1: It gives me time. Well, thank God the sun's going down.
- 4:09Speaker 5: It's going down.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I would burst into flames. I'm not allowed to go
- 4:12Speaker 1: out in the sun. Creature that I am. But I
- 4:16Speaker 1: was trying to think as we were, I was like, okay,
- 4:18Speaker 1: we're going to go to some sort of crazy horror
- 4:20Speaker 1: talk like we do most of the time when I
- 4:22Speaker 1: see you. I was trying to think like what was
- 4:26Speaker 1: my initial reaction and or like what was my experience
- 4:33Speaker 1: my exposure to horror? Do you actually remember the first
- 4:36Speaker 1: horror thing, if not that you saw, that you remember
- 4:40Speaker 1: seeing that made an impact on you?
- 4:41Speaker 5: Film or just period?
- 4:43Speaker 1: Let's go with both.
- 4:45Speaker 5: Okay.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Whichever you want to start with.
- 4:47Speaker 5: I remember distinctly, actually. My mother and father were very open,
- 4:52Speaker 5: and cable was new. Ah, that kind of open. Yeah,
- 4:56Speaker 5: we were always the first family to have cable. I
- 4:58Speaker 5: remember all that. I remember the countdown for MTV and
- 5:02Speaker 5: all that crap. But Terror Train was the first film
- 5:06Speaker 5: they let me actually sit in the room with them,
- 5:08Speaker 5: besides sneaking down the... Of course, of course. But I
- 5:10Speaker 5: vaguely remember that, kind of like sneaking down and hiding
- 5:13Speaker 5: underneath the sofa, because you could fit back then.
- 5:16Speaker 7: And they didn't have a motorized unit.
- 5:19Speaker 5: Right, right. Terror Train. And I remember trying to get
- 5:24Speaker 5: back under the sofa.
- 5:25Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Away from the train.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Oh, my God. It freaked me the hell out. And
- 5:31Speaker 5: on top of that, like I said, they were awesome parents.
- 5:34Speaker 5: And so my dad liked to hide in the closets. Nice. Hallways,
- 5:38Speaker 5: doorways with his mask on.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Tormenting children, sure.
- 5:40Speaker 5: And they were ready for me when that happened. They
- 5:43Speaker 5: were like giggling away like little kids, watching me squirm.
- 5:46Speaker 5: probably cry if i i don't remember that but i'm
- 5:49Speaker 5: pretty sure my mom said i was a cry baby
- 5:50Speaker 5: for a little bit.
- 5:51Speaker 1: This was the same terror train night where this was
- 5:53Speaker 1: this was the exact same night okay okay.
- 5:56Speaker 5: So they did all that stuff anyways but then they
- 5:58Speaker 5: were like you know have a seat this is gonna
- 6:00Speaker 5: be fun for you.
- 6:01Speaker 7: The setup oh my god yeah yeah it.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Was brand new on cable at that time you know
- 6:05Speaker 5: it took almost a year for it to come out
- 6:07Speaker 5: yeah on cable back then and uh Yeah, they were
- 6:11Speaker 5: just waiting and waiting and waiting, which unbeknownst to me,
- 6:13Speaker 5: my father goes to get his mask and hide in
- 6:16Speaker 5: the closet, and I'm trying to run away. My mom's
- 6:19Speaker 5: just giggling away, and then here comes my father.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Bam!
- 6:22Speaker 5: I'm like, well, I hate you now. But that's the
- 6:29Speaker 5: one that I remember the most, because it's the first
- 6:31Speaker 5: film they allowed me to watch, and I thought, this
- 6:33Speaker 5: is going to be great. Popcorn. Yeah. You know? Milk,
- 6:36Speaker 5: because that's what I drank.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Well, you are crazy. That explains your crazy, out-of-control lifestyle now.
- 6:43Speaker 5: And, yeah.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Milk.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Milk.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Hit me, bartender.
- 6:48Speaker 5: Milk. Milk me. Oh, my gosh. That's Back to the Future.
- 6:52Speaker 1: That's going on in the park over here, but it's
- 6:55Speaker 1: over there. Yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Oh, my gosh.
- 6:57Speaker 1: So, yeah, I don't have... I kept thinking. I was like,
- 7:03Speaker 1: I've always been into horror, and I don't... I kind
- 7:06Speaker 1: of remember my first movie that I attached to, but
- 7:09Speaker 1: I think it's every standard kid that grew up in
- 7:12Speaker 1: our age range or every age range after that. I'm like,
- 7:15Speaker 1: I saw Star Wars in the theater. So I remember that.
- 7:18Speaker 1: You can almost, I guess, say, like, cantinas, and those
- 7:21Speaker 1: are creatures and Wookiees.
- 7:23Speaker 5: Werewolf was in there.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, there's definitely a werewolf in there. There's a
- 7:26Speaker 1: couple of demons. So I remember that, but I was
- 7:28Speaker 1: trying to think of, like, years later, I remember really
- 7:31Speaker 1: being fascinated by horror, and I'm trying to think, what
- 7:33Speaker 1: was the first stuff? And it may... Again, it may
- 7:37Speaker 1: be as classic as Universal stuff, because I do remember
- 7:42Speaker 1: we were one of those that, much like you, had
- 7:46Speaker 1: cable before most other people, which I think I've brought
- 7:48Speaker 1: it up on the show before. We had something called
- 7:51Speaker 1: Super Channel first. Do you remember Super Channel?
- 7:54Speaker 5: I remember.
- 7:56Speaker 5: If I remember correctly, it was the first cable box
- 7:58Speaker 5: that we ever got. It may have been Super Channel,
- 8:00Speaker 5: but I remember it being cable, which was an eight-button
- 8:04Speaker 5: box with a switch going from top to bottom of
- 8:07Speaker 5: the row. We had that.
- 8:08Speaker 1: This, I think, was pre-official cable because it was almost
- 8:14Speaker 1: like a dish.
- 8:15Speaker 5: They got a budget.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Well, no. I don't even know. Again, they don't have
- 8:18Speaker 1: any money. They don't have any money now. They're as
- 8:20Speaker 1: poor as I am. But I think it was one
- 8:23Speaker 1: of those, like, this is our expense. Shut up. We're
- 8:25Speaker 1: watching this movie or whatever. So at some point, they
- 8:29Speaker 1: had decided to get Super Channel, which was this new
- 8:32Speaker 1: brand new thing in the town that we still live in.
- 8:35Speaker 1: And it was basically just a giant ass antenna. Because
- 8:39Speaker 1: I remember as a kid looking at it, I'm like,
- 8:41Speaker 1: nobody else in the neighborhood had it. And we had
- 8:42Speaker 1: this giant antenna mounted on the top of our house.
- 8:45Speaker 1: And like it got one channel. Like again, it was
- 8:49Speaker 1: all channel. It was super channel. And it got, I guess,
- 8:51Speaker 1: whatever first run to cable. Again, none of these things
- 8:56Speaker 1: meant anything at the time because there was no straight
- 8:58Speaker 1: to cable. There was no first run to the theater
- 9:00Speaker 1: and then cable. They just started figuring this crap out. Yeah.
- 9:03Speaker 1: But I guess at that point they were doing like
- 9:06Speaker 1: whatever they got a hold of, whoever they signed to
- 9:08Speaker 1: a deal. So it was much like those early days
- 9:11Speaker 1: of like the movie channel that you got like 12
- 9:13Speaker 1: movies and it just looped them. And for a month,
- 9:16Speaker 1: you had those 12 movies, which is probably why I
- 9:18Speaker 1: watched as many dumb things as I always watch. So, yeah,
- 9:21Speaker 1: we had that initially, but I barely remember specifics of
- 9:25Speaker 1: stuff I saw on there. We pretty quickly, because again,
- 9:29Speaker 1: I think that wasn't great, and I think we got
- 9:31Speaker 1: rid of it within that first year or so. I
- 9:33Speaker 1: don't know if there was a binding contract involved, but
- 9:36Speaker 1: pretty quickly, I think we switched to, by then, Cable
- 9:39Speaker 1: had moved in. And we, I'm trying to think of
- 9:42Speaker 1: the first one. The first one, I think, still had
- 9:44Speaker 1: the buttons.
- 9:45Speaker 5: The push buttons. It was the push button, like four
- 9:47Speaker 5: buttons on top and bottom, and then like a little switch,
- 9:49Speaker 5: they went from top to bottom.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Shortly after that, I knew somebody else, and I went
- 9:52Speaker 1: over to their house, and they had the slide.
- 9:54Speaker 5: Do you remember that was after well before that was
- 9:57Speaker 5: the big knob the.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Big knob well we i we had the knob forever
- 10:00Speaker 1: yeah like we had the for years and years we
- 10:02Speaker 1: always had the knob but i think maybe it was
- 10:04Speaker 1: just different neighborhoods.
- 10:05Speaker 7: Because they had a slide happened it was a big
- 10:07Speaker 7: deal box they had the slide yeah it would light
- 10:09Speaker 7: up still had like the line to it but they
- 10:12Speaker 7: had that before we had the knob i feel like
- 10:13Speaker 7: i feel like we still had just gotten away from
- 10:15Speaker 7: push buttons And then they had the slide and we
- 10:17Speaker 7: got the big ass knob that just that's the way
- 10:20Speaker 7: it was for like 15 years.
- 10:22Speaker 1: After that, like until they finally went, hey, everybody's stealing cable.
- 10:25Speaker 1: We got to make this more difficult.
- 10:27Speaker 5: Yeah, then you use a butter knife and then get
- 10:28Speaker 5: whatever channels.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Or you jam that screwdriver into the box trying to
- 10:32Speaker 1: get the special channels to come in. The money channels.
- 10:35Speaker 1: The channel that I'm like, but there's a stupid wavy
- 10:38Speaker 1: line in the middle and I can't see boobs. This
- 10:40Speaker 1: is terrible.
- 10:41Speaker 5: Oh, you would eventually.
- 10:42Speaker 1: My, yeah. Which again is why. But that's what I
- 10:45Speaker 1: was going to say. I really did kind of. I
- 10:47Speaker 1: think about it now, and I almost want to question them.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I need to have an episode where I just sit
- 10:52Speaker 1: my mom down and go, why? Why was I just
- 10:55Speaker 1: allowed to watch whatever the hell I wanted?
- 10:56Speaker 5: Oh, my God.
- 10:57Speaker 1: But I did. I don't ever remember them going... Not
- 11:01Speaker 1: by the time I was... even like not like less
- 11:04Speaker 1: than 12. I don't ever remember there being like rules. No,
- 11:07Speaker 1: I don't watch it. Like when I was really little,
- 11:09Speaker 1: I feel like there was, they're not horrible parents, but
- 11:11Speaker 1: like they're got it to a point where I was,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I was self sufficient. It was, I mean, that was
- 11:15Speaker 1: the days nobody parented like they do now. They weren't,
- 11:19Speaker 1: they weren't.
- 11:19Speaker 5: You hope.
- 11:20Speaker 1: There weren't helicopter parents. There weren't even glider parents. It
- 11:23Speaker 1: was just like, go do your shit. I got to
- 11:24Speaker 1: go to work.
- 11:25Speaker 5: That reminds me of the incident we had a family
- 11:27Speaker 5: reunion or a birthday. I cannot remember. And I was
- 11:29Speaker 5: talking about the movie Porky's.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Sure.
- 11:31Speaker 5: And my cousin freaked out and ran into the kitchen
- 11:35Speaker 5: in front of all my aunts and uncles and said,
- 11:37Speaker 5: Aunt Gail, I cannot believe you let Steve watch Porky's.
- 11:42Speaker 5: And I was like, what?
- 11:44Speaker 1: Again, like when you're a horse, you don't know the
- 11:47Speaker 1: difference though.
- 11:48Speaker 5: I may have been eight.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I didn't think about it myself until I think it
- 11:52Speaker 1: was when we started doing this show and other people
- 11:54Speaker 1: were talking about, I don't know, I wasn't allowed to
- 11:55Speaker 1: watch that. And I was like, wait, was there a
- 11:57Speaker 1: time I wasn't allowed to watch anything on cable? And
- 11:59Speaker 1: I'm like, No, like I just.
- 12:01Speaker 5: No, mom worked nights and dad ran a video store
- 12:04Speaker 5: and a convenience store. Remember those convenience?
- 12:06Speaker 1: Like combo?
- 12:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Okay, that's what I was going to say. It was
- 12:09Speaker 1: a convenience store.
- 12:10Speaker 5: With a video store in the back with like, yeah.
- 12:13Speaker 1: I was going to ask because you mentioned it recently
- 12:15Speaker 1: when I saw you at an event that we can
- 12:17Speaker 1: go into later. But you mentioned that and I kind
- 12:20Speaker 1: of wanted to go, wait, which one? So, like, did
- 12:22Speaker 1: it have a cool name, or was it just like
- 12:24Speaker 1: a generic convenience?
- 12:25Speaker 5: It was a convenience. It was convenience.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Convenience, the actual... Yeah, I do remember those.
- 12:30Speaker 5: Remember those?
- 12:30Speaker 1: I do remember those.
- 12:31Speaker 5: That's what it was, yes.
- 12:33Speaker 1: And that came shortly after the fun that was the,
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know, 7-Elevens of the rest of the world, but
- 12:38Speaker 1: we had a convenient March.
- 12:39Speaker 5: You could still rent video players, and they came in
- 12:42Speaker 5: big plastic suitcases.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I mean, in the beginning, you just had the convenience store,
- 12:45Speaker 1: and then they got on the bandwagon pretty quickly of like, oh...
- 12:49Speaker 1: People are coming here anyway, and this movie thing might
- 12:53Speaker 1: just take off. So they were probably one of the
- 12:55Speaker 1: first places I saw that weren't meant to be that,
- 12:58Speaker 1: that like latched onto it.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Because as time went on, then it became like the
- 13:02Speaker 1: tanning salon video store was so... Like, you saw that
- 13:06Speaker 1: in so many knockoffs.
- 13:07Speaker 5: It's in trancers.
- 13:09Speaker 1: It's okay. It's like both businesses. You don't really have
- 13:12Speaker 1: to have anything but enough money to buy the equipment.
- 13:15Speaker 1: You don't have to be trained in how to run
- 13:16Speaker 1: a tanning booth. That's why people got, like, cancer and died.
- 13:19Speaker 5: What level of death?
- 13:20Speaker 1: They're just like, here, crank this. It's the same knob
- 13:22Speaker 1: that the old cable box, I think. They just crank
- 13:25Speaker 1: it up and lit people on fire. And the same
- 13:27Speaker 1: thing with, like, you didn't have to have training to
- 13:29Speaker 1: run a video store. If you were a mom and
- 13:31Speaker 1: pop and you were like, I think that looks like
- 13:33Speaker 1: a thing that could make money. Because half of them
- 13:34Speaker 1: weren't even, like, into movies. It was just, like, a
- 13:36Speaker 1: business opportunity.
- 13:38Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 13:38Speaker 1: That sort of popped up in the 80s. It was like, hmm,
- 13:41Speaker 1: do you have a little disposable income? Would you like
- 13:43Speaker 1: to be your own boss? And you just went out and, like,
- 13:46Speaker 1: rented a local place and, like, loaded up on as
- 13:49Speaker 1: many as you could afford to get. Which some of
- 13:51Speaker 1: those little ones... little tiny ones.
- 13:53Speaker 5: But they found some of the most specific movies. It's
- 13:56Speaker 5: where I got to see Re-Animator, Phantasm II, things like that.
- 14:01Speaker 5: Make Them Die Slowly. I was like, what is that box?
- 14:03Speaker 1: It is. I mean, it is one of those and
- 14:05Speaker 1: that's the more I keep thinking about it. It's like,
- 14:07Speaker 1: I remember, because I jumped away from my, I remember
- 14:10Speaker 1: as a kid watching.
- 14:11Speaker 5: It was before Roadrunner and all of that. They were
- 14:14Speaker 5: like huge. Oh yeah, the chains. Those were great because
- 14:17Speaker 5: they had the dark rooms.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Everything. Oh, wow.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I rarely went in there.
- 14:22Speaker 5: I don't know what you're talking about. Of course, yeah.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Okay.
- 14:25Speaker 1: It's probably true. I think it's an intimidating room. You
- 14:29Speaker 1: have to go through the curtain. The beads are really
- 14:31Speaker 1: cool when the beads, you know.
- 14:33Speaker 5: Those little gas stations that started doing that are the
- 14:35Speaker 5: same little gas stations that started dying out that you
- 14:38Speaker 5: could buy, you know, a dollar VHS box of them.
- 14:41Speaker 5: I was like, oh, my God. And you did. Hell, yeah,
- 14:44Speaker 5: I did. All right.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Found a few reasons. I don't even have a player anymore.
- 14:48Speaker 5: What is the first VHS you ever were able to
- 14:50Speaker 5: either still money or save up or whatever to buy?
- 14:52Speaker 1: The for real pre- because I bought, I have both.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I have the first blank one I bought specifically to
- 14:58Speaker 1: tape a movie on.
- 14:59Speaker 5: You still have it?
- 15:01Speaker 1: Yeah, in a box somewhere. I guarantee, I still have so, again,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I've talked about it a lot lately. I've been moving
- 15:07Speaker 1: for years now and I've moved my stuff so many
- 15:11Speaker 1: times over the umpteen years it's been going on now.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And like, I've got boxes big ass square oddly shaped
- 15:18Speaker 1: like ones that vhs tapes used to come in in
- 15:20Speaker 1: suncoast i have the actual boxes loaded with vhs tapes
- 15:24Speaker 1: because i had so many like pre-recorded ones that the
- 15:27Speaker 1: funny thing is.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Not our push record did all the commercials was like
- 15:31Speaker 5: yeah when amc was amazing to eight.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Hours worth of nonsense yeah and like the sad thing
- 15:36Speaker 1: is number one i don't have a functioning vcr at
- 15:39Speaker 1: this point Number two, I don't think any of those
- 15:42Speaker 1: would work. Towards the end, they've made them where they
- 15:44Speaker 1: didn't even have adjustable tracking. That auto-tracking bullshit didn't work.
- 15:49Speaker 1: So anything I had from that first run, when I
- 15:51Speaker 1: would still play it, even 20 years ago, it wouldn't
- 15:54Speaker 1: work anymore. You could kind of make... Again, I had
- 15:57Speaker 1: the wavy line in the middle. I still couldn't see
- 15:59Speaker 1: my naked girl. But it still wouldn't play right. So
- 16:03Speaker 1: I'm still lugging these things around in boxes, and I'm going,
- 16:06Speaker 1: I can't even use these for anything. So I finally
- 16:08Speaker 1: found something to do with my pre-recorded ones.
- 16:10Speaker 5: So what was the very first one?
- 16:11Speaker 1: But the very first one, once I realized, hey, we've
- 16:14Speaker 1: got cable. Hey, we bought a VCR. This is amazing.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I can record a movie. And again, I always went
- 16:20Speaker 1: to movies because I'm a dork. And as much as
- 16:22Speaker 1: I eventually would tape some TV.
- 16:24Speaker 5: That's why we know each other.
- 16:25Speaker 1: It was mostly movies for me. So like my initial one,
- 16:29Speaker 1: Misty Will Be So Proud, I specifically bought my first
- 16:32Speaker 1: blank VHS tape to record Beastmaster. Whoa. My very first...
- 16:37Speaker 1: thing that I pushed record and kept for my very
- 16:40Speaker 1: own and it's still sitting in a box somewhere.
- 16:42Speaker 5: To be goofy, which station did you get it off of? Showtime?
- 16:45Speaker 1: We had Spotlight. Do you remember Spotlight? At some point
- 16:49Speaker 1: before it went under. I know because I had a
- 16:51Speaker 1: Spotlight t-shirt at one point. It was like their promo.
- 16:54Speaker 1: It was just little lights that spelled out. I need
- 16:57Speaker 1: to find that again and just put it in a
- 16:59Speaker 1: case like a geek.
- 17:01Speaker 5: Don't touch that.
- 17:02Speaker 1: That's a 30 year old movie t-shirt that nobody knows
- 17:05Speaker 1: what it is.
- 17:06Speaker 5: What's that? Don't touch.
- 17:09Speaker 1: But yeah, so I do specifically remember we had movie
- 17:12Speaker 1: channel most of the run of us having cable when
- 17:15Speaker 1: I was still living there.
- 17:16Speaker 5: That was the very first one I remember. Then HBO,
- 17:18Speaker 5: and I thought the Spotlight became Showtime, but I could
- 17:21Speaker 5: be wrong.
- 17:22Speaker 1: I don't know, because I thought Spotlight came and went
- 17:25Speaker 1: pretty quick. I thought it was something.
- 17:26Speaker 5: Well, that's just it. I don't remember. It might have
- 17:27Speaker 5: been transitional. Maybe we just replaced it with Showtime. It
- 17:30Speaker 5: may have been transitional, and then Showtime moved in. And
- 17:32Speaker 5: then Skinamax.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Showtime's still on, so. Yeah, eventually. But yeah, that and
- 17:37Speaker 1: movie channel was also one of the I can't keep
- 17:40Speaker 1: skipping the very first one. But because I used to
- 17:43Speaker 1: watch even outside of the cable, we had cable. But
- 17:45Speaker 1: I remember like our local I don't even know if
- 17:49Speaker 1: it was the local channel or even like the wave
- 17:51Speaker 1: three like network. on like Friday nights or something would
- 17:55Speaker 1: run like old horror movies.
- 17:56Speaker 5: So I do remember. The anticipation.
- 17:59Speaker 1: We had the Fright Night guy that did it on 41,
- 18:01Speaker 1: but we also, I thought at one point they did
- 18:02Speaker 1: it on.
- 18:02Speaker 5: That's the one I'm talking about where the guy would
- 18:04Speaker 5: walk the streets and then he would talk to you.
- 18:07Speaker 5: You never saw his face. And then he just disappeared
- 18:09Speaker 5: at the desk.
- 18:10Speaker 2: And watch.
- 18:11Speaker 5: And his whole thing was the anticipation. Anticipation. The anticipation.
- 18:14Speaker 5: And the title of that show escapes me, but my
- 18:18Speaker 5: mother would sit me down and she'd call them, let's
- 18:20Speaker 5: go watch The Spookies.
- 18:21Speaker 1: The Spookies.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Yes, and that's when I saw Creatures from Black Lagoon
- 18:24Speaker 5: in 3D and House of Wax and all of that.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking might have been the early
- 18:31Speaker 1: ones because I do remember watching those. And even as
- 18:33Speaker 1: I got older, I would seek it out because I
- 18:35Speaker 1: remember specifically trying to get away from my sisters and
- 18:40Speaker 1: hide in my room so I could go watch The
- 18:42Speaker 1: Mummy's Hand. It was like a horrible prepubescent girl slumber
- 18:48Speaker 1: party going on. And they were trying to torment me
- 18:50Speaker 1: because I was there. And like, so I was trying
- 18:52Speaker 1: to escape and I took my tiny, and again, kids
- 18:55Speaker 1: out there, this will blow your mind. Like my TV
- 18:58Speaker 1: that I had in my room at the time was
- 19:01Speaker 1: five inches. Like it's literally like this big on my
- 19:04Speaker 1: jam box, mind you. And that's how I was watching
- 19:07Speaker 1: the mummy's hand in the dark, laying on the floor
- 19:10Speaker 1: in my room.
- 19:11Speaker 5: I've tried to explain to people, like when you are
- 19:13Speaker 5: a kid at that point and you watch black and
- 19:15Speaker 5: white television, somehow your brain makes it color. And you
- 19:18Speaker 5: don't realize it until either you go into the living
- 19:21Speaker 5: room or go to a friend's house. That's how I felt.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I just watched a lot of it because we... I
- 19:25Speaker 1: didn't even notice it. I think we had. Yeah, I
- 19:27Speaker 1: think we had. We always... from most of my memory,
- 19:30Speaker 1: had a color TV. But we had like a 13-inch
- 19:33Speaker 1: black and white one that sat in the other room.
- 19:35Speaker 1: We were obviously very rich with two televisions.
- 19:38Speaker 5: We had the console and the TV on top of
- 19:40Speaker 5: the console.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Eventually, we had that.
- 19:42Speaker 7: I think every poor, dumb American family.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like we had the big giant, which I
- 19:47Speaker 1: wish we had that now. Like, I'm the kind of
- 19:49Speaker 1: dork who never... goes back and wants to get old
- 19:51Speaker 1: TVs I went to a farm recently and they had three.
- 19:54Speaker 7: Of them well I was like holy crap T and
- 19:57Speaker 7: J have like five in their living room.
- 19:59Speaker 5: Oh my gosh it was a farm party for a
- 20:01Speaker 5: birthday Yes, we're in Kentucky. And I was like, holy crap,
- 20:06Speaker 5: you've got three console televisions with stereos in them.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yeah, so every poor family, that's what you did. You
- 20:12Speaker 1: had the console. And then like, what, are you going
- 20:14Speaker 1: to go buy a TV stand? No, you got a
- 20:15Speaker 1: console sitting right there. So when it goes out, which
- 20:18Speaker 1: ours eventually did, we then parked the same size television
- 20:23Speaker 1: on top of the console unit. And, oh. What a
- 20:26Speaker 1: bunch of losers we were.
- 20:28Speaker 5: Man.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I mean, I don't, I wouldn't trade it for anything.
- 20:30Speaker 1: I don't want to talk about it. But it's so lame. Yeah.
- 20:32Speaker 1: When I think about it now, I'm like, how trashy
- 20:35Speaker 1: is this? And there's another thing.
- 20:37Speaker 5: Do you remember, maybe I'm remembering wrong because my memory sucks.
- 20:40Speaker 5: It really does.
- 20:42Speaker 1: It's all that milk.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Wasn't Movie Macabre Elvira's show in the middle of the
- 20:45Speaker 5: week at one point? Like on a Wednesday? It was
- 20:48Speaker 5: before like the silk stockings things when they would do
- 20:51Speaker 5: like the sexy night TVs. They had Elvira and I
- 20:53Speaker 5: remember seeing her in the middle of the week. You know,
- 20:56Speaker 5: at midnight and, you know, had a.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Again, it's one of those.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Before they moved her to a different station.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I don't... That's the thing. I'm trying to remember the
- 21:04Speaker 1: same thing of, like, when was the first time? Like,
- 21:06Speaker 1: Elvira was kind of always around, but I don't... I
- 21:10Speaker 1: didn't see a ton of it. Like, I think I
- 21:12Speaker 1: knew of her as a personality. I knew that she hosted,
- 21:16Speaker 1: but I think... I feel like for a while we
- 21:17Speaker 1: weren't getting it in this city.
- 21:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 21:20Speaker 5: I saw her every day at the convenience store next
- 21:22Speaker 5: to the Coors Light.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a different thing.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Five foot standee, I'm like, okay.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Shortly after, I was wearing my Elvira t-shirt, which I
- 21:29Speaker 1: still have because I'm a dork. And yeah, so I
- 21:33Speaker 1: was totally like on board with Elvira. But I do
- 21:35Speaker 1: feel like there was a, I didn't get a lot
- 21:37Speaker 1: of the Elvira hosting that a lot of people grew
- 21:39Speaker 1: up with.
- 21:40Speaker 5: I just couldn't remember if it, maybe I'm remembering it wrong.
- 21:43Speaker 5: I was maybe trying to get confirmation.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Again, I feel like it maybe came and went. Because
- 21:47Speaker 1: it is one I feel like there was a long
- 21:48Speaker 1: period where we just didn't get Elvira here.
- 21:51Speaker 5: Right.
- 21:51Speaker 1: The dry county.
- 21:52Speaker 5: That we are. We did get Joe Bob on the
- 21:53Speaker 5: movie channel, though.
- 21:54Speaker 1: That's what I was going to say. That I've referenced
- 21:57Speaker 1: many times over the years.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Everyone remembers Monster Vision, but if you got those early days.
- 22:02Speaker 1: I was driving theaters.
- 22:03Speaker 5: It was even better.
- 22:04Speaker 1: I was, yeah. The early run. And it was one
- 22:06Speaker 1: of those. I still reference that with my... my autographed
- 22:10Speaker 1: Joe Bob photo that I got granted. I saw him
- 22:12Speaker 1: like a few weeks ago at a convention, but like,
- 22:15Speaker 1: I didn't get anything. Then I have mine from when
- 22:17Speaker 1: I was, I don't know, 12 and I wrote you
- 22:19Speaker 1: and I was like, your show is awesome. Like, and
- 22:22Speaker 1: he sent it back and I've still got that same one.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I don't think I've gotten one since then.
- 22:26Speaker 5: Cause I'm like, I've got that.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I got mine. Like that one's more important. Like, so
- 22:30Speaker 1: it's him on the old movie channel set for, for
- 22:32Speaker 1: drive in theater. And it's, it is one of those, like,
- 22:36Speaker 1: I do remember the first time I saw that and
- 22:39Speaker 1: it was just like, what is not just the movies
- 22:43Speaker 1: but i think that's another one of those key moments
- 22:45Speaker 1: of what led me to this right of like hosting
- 22:48Speaker 1: horror films what was it it was a whatever it
- 22:51Speaker 1: was a guy who sat around and talked about movies
- 22:53Speaker 1: and i don't think i realized it at the time
- 22:56Speaker 1: but when i think back now i'm like that's one
- 22:57Speaker 1: of the it's like right around that same time i'm
- 23:00Speaker 1: getting into joe bob and like middle of the damn
- 23:03Speaker 1: night for some reason is when they ran Siskel and Ebert.
- 23:06Speaker 1: So it's like those three guys, like I remember just
- 23:08Speaker 1: being fascinated with watching those two argue amongst themselves about movies.
- 23:13Speaker 1: And then Joe Bob would find the weirdest shit and like,
- 23:16Speaker 1: and have all these facts about it yeah and would
- 23:19Speaker 1: sit there and just talk about it like it was
- 23:21Speaker 1: normal and like normal people in the world didn't do
- 23:23Speaker 1: that so.
- 23:24Speaker 5: I'm like who made you want to be knowledgeable about
- 23:25Speaker 5: films before the Tarantino effect took place in the 90s
- 23:28Speaker 5: that was the guy that made me think I want
- 23:30Speaker 5: to know who did the lighting I want to know
- 23:32Speaker 5: all that stuff Cinefantastic that kind of stuff did too
- 23:34Speaker 5: but Joe Bob made me like, wow, it's cool to
- 23:36Speaker 5: be a nerd, even though there's like four of me
- 23:38Speaker 5: in the whole neighborhood.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I don't remember anybody like that. When I think back,
- 23:42Speaker 1: I'm like.
- 23:43Speaker 5: I hated Siskel and Ebert because they hated every movie
- 23:44Speaker 5: I liked, but I mean, a couple they did.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Even at the time I liked them, even when I
- 23:49Speaker 1: knew I didn't agree with a lot of their stuff,
- 23:51Speaker 1: but I was just like.
- 23:51Speaker 5: What else do you have?
- 23:53Speaker 1: But I'm like, I think I was just fascinated. I'm like,
- 23:55Speaker 1: they're so freaking smart. like I was a dumb kid
- 23:58Speaker 1: so I was just like listen to the way they
- 24:00Speaker 1: talk about this stuff I'm like they're so schooled in
- 24:03Speaker 1: it and I'm like there was but.
- 24:04Speaker 5: Those three cats made me want to be knowledgeable it's.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Planting that seed that I was just like I want
- 24:09Speaker 1: that like I don't know how exactly little did I
- 24:11Speaker 1: know all it took was devoting every moment of my
- 24:14Speaker 1: life to watching crap.
- 24:15Speaker 5: And like Well, like picking up your very first Fangoria. Yeah.
- 24:18Speaker 5: Starlog was cool, all that, but Fangoria.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Fangoria?
- 24:21Speaker 5: I picked it up in another convenience store at the
- 24:23Speaker 5: top of my street. A different one? It was totally different.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Does your dad know about this?
- 24:26Speaker 5: Yeah, because my mother and my father are split, so
- 24:28Speaker 5: it was totally different.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Well, then it was like, screw you, Dad.
- 24:30Speaker 5: Different ends of town.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Buy my magazines wherever I want.
- 24:33Speaker 5: Well, I would borrow money from my mother, and she would, whatever. Yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 5: But I remember that first episode.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Again, I.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Issue of a fangle that I ever picked up.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Dragged, digging.
- 24:46Speaker 5: What the hell is this?
- 24:47Speaker 1: Digging through all my crap, because I did have... I
- 24:49Speaker 1: had some Starlogs pretty early on. The one I remember
- 24:52Speaker 1: that was, again, kind of a weird formidable as this
- 24:56Speaker 1: level of movie geek that I am, there was one that...
- 25:01Speaker 1: I'm trying to think. I think it was like Cinefantasia.
- 25:03Speaker 5: Cinefantastic was great. If you could find them, I could
- 25:05Speaker 5: only find them at the Dun Dun Dun Great Escape.
- 25:07Speaker 1: I feel like it was, yeah, that's the first place
- 25:09Speaker 1: I think I ever saw one.
- 25:10Speaker 5: I used to take the bus down there to get it.
- 25:12Speaker 5: When it was next to the Erexus-y, when they were
- 25:14Speaker 5: like side by side.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, the tiny little spot that Erexus-y was.
- 25:17Speaker 5: That was a golden place for like magazines was Erexus-y
- 25:19Speaker 5: had like the metal health and all, or mental, whatever
- 25:21Speaker 5: the hell it was called. Metal maniacs and all that stuff.
- 25:24Speaker 5: And then, you know, and then. Freaking Great Escape had
- 25:28Speaker 5: all of the nerd magazines. I would have to like sucker.
- 25:31Speaker 1: My parents into taking me there because I've been going
- 25:34Speaker 1: to Great Escape, which is just a comic book shop
- 25:35Speaker 1: for you guys. Before it was the most common thing
- 25:39Speaker 1: in the world for, first of all, there to be
- 25:41Speaker 1: geeks and nerds who like comic books and places to
- 25:44Speaker 1: go by them that were like successful and well lit
- 25:48Speaker 1: and chains. And like, instead it was just like a
- 25:50Speaker 1: weird little hole in the wall kind of a place.
- 25:52Speaker 1: And you, you know, dorks like us would wander in
- 25:55Speaker 1: and be like, Oh my gosh, look at all. Like
- 25:57Speaker 1: it would blow your mind. So like, yeah, it was
- 26:00Speaker 1: one of those, that was the only place I knew
- 26:02Speaker 1: of as a kid. And I had to like, it
- 26:04Speaker 1: would be like a yearning in me. Like I hadn't
- 26:06Speaker 1: been in like a month because again, I didn't, I didn't,
- 26:09Speaker 1: I guess I just didn't take the bus that young.
- 26:11Speaker 1: And like, I didn't, live close enough to hit it
- 26:14Speaker 1: with the bike so I was just like shit I
- 26:16Speaker 1: have to convince somebody to drive me to this place
- 26:19Speaker 1: and like it was always such a chore when you're
- 26:21Speaker 1: a kid because then I'm like I don't even want
- 26:23Speaker 1: to tell them where because then they're going to think
- 26:24Speaker 1: I'm stupid because I want comic books and they're stupid
- 26:26Speaker 1: because comic books are cool we.
- 26:28Speaker 5: Were in 6th or 7th grade and we would take
- 26:30Speaker 5: the bus and go to the Great.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Escape eventually I would just be like I would bug
- 26:34Speaker 1: them enough they were like where the hell do you
- 26:36Speaker 1: want to go and I'd be like I want to
- 26:37Speaker 1: go to the comic book store so I would go
- 26:39Speaker 1: there and then again that's where I first saw Cinema
- 26:42Speaker 1: Fantastique And then there was like an offshoot one, though,
- 26:45Speaker 1: that I got at Walden Books. So it was a
- 26:47Speaker 1: little more readily available. So I can't remember if it
- 26:50Speaker 1: was them or it was the same publisher. Oh, believe me,
- 26:53Speaker 1: I did more than enough mall time. Thank you. Basher
- 26:56Speaker 1: Manor is no more. But I hung out there quite often.
- 26:59Speaker 5: Aladdin's Castle or whatever it was.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Oh, man. Yeah.
- 27:01Speaker 1: I was playing my spy hunter. It was so awesome.
- 27:04Speaker 1: But they had like an offshoot version.
- 27:07Speaker 5: You're fucking old.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Very.
- 27:09Speaker 5: I'm old.
- 27:09Speaker 1: You're fucking old. Thousands of years old. But they had
- 27:13Speaker 1: an offshoot that was like a full size. It wasn't
- 27:16Speaker 1: like the squatty version that was. But it was a
- 27:18Speaker 1: specific behind the scenes... not just like how they make movies,
- 27:23Speaker 1: but how you can make stuff that was like, yeah,
- 27:26Speaker 1: way more than like the, cause the other one was
- 27:28Speaker 1: like fancy high end studio. Like this is how they
- 27:31Speaker 1: made this monster. And like, this was, here's this terrible
- 27:35Speaker 1: Roger Corman movie. His stuff already looks relatively bad, but
- 27:39Speaker 1: if you get like some cardboard tubes and some duct tape,
- 27:41Speaker 1: you can make your version that looks only slightly worse.
- 27:45Speaker 1: So I do remember seeing that and going, wait, you
- 27:49Speaker 1: can make this stuff? Again, I knew it wasn't real,
- 27:52Speaker 1: but it hadn't occurred to me that I could make
- 27:54Speaker 1: this crap. So I then remember getting them and going like, okay,
- 27:58Speaker 1: here's this effect where you can make it look like
- 28:00Speaker 1: you got shot with an arrow in your movie. And
- 28:03Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't really have a camera, but let's
- 28:06Speaker 1: pretend like I do and use this. So we technically
- 28:08Speaker 1: had a Super 8, but I did little, I had
- 28:10Speaker 1: some experiments with Super 8, but it wasn't until I
- 28:12Speaker 1: got a VHS years later. And even that was never...
- 28:16Speaker 1: I need to be more focused on my.
- 28:18Speaker 5: Filmmaking, I suppose.
- 28:19Speaker 1: But I do remember as a kid, I bought an
- 28:22Speaker 1: arrow specifically to saw it in half and work it
- 28:24Speaker 1: into a belt so you could put it through a
- 28:26Speaker 1: shirt and make it look like there was an arrow
- 28:27Speaker 1: sticking out of you. I had that some... I probably
- 28:30Speaker 1: still have that arrow somewhere.
- 28:31Speaker 5: Oh, that'd be great.
- 28:33Speaker 1: I also was... There was one where you could build
- 28:35Speaker 1: that creature from one of the terrible sci-fi corpsman movies
- 28:40Speaker 1: of the knockoff Star Wars at that time. And so
- 28:44Speaker 1: I do remember starting to make that like I got
- 28:46Speaker 1: pieces of cardboard and was like and I don't think
- 28:49Speaker 1: I ever got far enough. So like eventually years later,
- 28:52Speaker 1: I would be like, oh, yeah, this was going to
- 28:53Speaker 1: be the eyeball for that creature I was building. So
- 28:56Speaker 1: this is the level of dorky movie geekiness that goes on.
- 29:00Speaker 5: I found I found the cast because I was going
- 29:02Speaker 5: to do the final crawl in our credits for our film.
- 29:05Speaker 5: did it all on paper so we were just gonna
- 29:07Speaker 5: like crawl down this long and it was like a
- 29:10Speaker 5: fucking scroll and of course everyone had to have name
- 29:12Speaker 5: changes a la like John Carpenter or whatever so you
- 29:15Speaker 5: know It was great.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Did you bill it as Steve's? Did you possession it
- 29:20Speaker 1: first like John Carpenter's?
- 29:21Speaker 5: So it wasn't mine. It was all of ours.
- 29:23Speaker 1: But you should have claimed.
- 29:24Speaker 5: Oh, my God. It was called Nightmare Forest, and there
- 29:27Speaker 5: was five people working on this thing as actors, and
- 29:29Speaker 5: it was like Evil Dead kind of like.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Nice.
- 29:31Speaker 5: But I looked at it, and I was like, wow.
- 29:33Speaker 5: that's you know I love that and I hope people
- 29:35Speaker 5: are still doing that now.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Good evening.

- 30:48Speaker 6: We should have our coffee.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I know you like coffee.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Oh my god, is this a segue to something?
- 30:57Speaker 5: What?
- 30:58Speaker 1: You don't want to run out to Heine Brothers right now?
- 31:00Speaker 3: Actually, now that you mention it, I'm drinking some fine
- 31:03Speaker 3: coffee here, but I feel like enjoying a nice hot
- 31:06Speaker 3: cup from my local Heine Brothers might actually be an
- 31:09Speaker 3: even better idea.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Well, really, you don't even have to leave the house.
- 31:12Speaker 1: You could just have it ordered right to your doorstep. Really? Yeah.
- 31:16Speaker 5: I can do that now?
- 31:17Speaker 1: It's not just something you can do. You can also
- 31:20Speaker 1: get a deal from your friends at Movie Meltdown.

- 31:28Speaker 3: Hey, insert a sound of me kicking over this table
- 31:30Speaker 3: with this substandard coffee.
- 31:32Speaker 6: There.
- 31:32Speaker 5: There. Right there.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Yeah, you heard it. And then let's run out, jump
- 31:37Speaker 3: in the car, and then screech sound effect as we
- 31:39Speaker 3: head on down to our local Heine Brothers.
- 31:43Speaker 1: There. Man, subtle.
- 31:49Speaker 5: Subtle segue.

- 32:43Speaker 5: I like your friends.
- 32:43Speaker 4: You know, things have obviously changed for us.
- 32:50Speaker 1: I have to help Charles finish his movie. It'd be
- 32:55Speaker 1: good for you to spend some time with kids who
- 32:57Speaker 1: don't run around with cameras and monster makeup. Uh, could
- 33:00Speaker 1: you close your eyes, please?
- 33:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:07Speaker 1: And action! An eastbound freighter derailed what the cargo was
- 33:31Speaker 1: on that freighter.
- 33:32Speaker 2: We don't know.
- 33:34Speaker 1: We can't tell anyone. I know. I understand you have
- 33:38Speaker 1: concerns about our cargo. Colonel, there isn't anything else that
- 33:40Speaker 1: I should know, is there?
- 33:41Speaker 6: I can assure you the answer is no.
- 33:43Speaker 1: We've gotten calls from people who have found local dogs,
- 33:46Speaker 1: but the calls coming in aren't local. Lucy! It's like
- 33:49Speaker 1: they all just ran away.
- 33:50Speaker 5: I've got property damage.
- 33:56Speaker 6: I've got theft.
- 33:58Speaker 2: I've got nine people missing now. Look at the things
- 34:00Speaker 2: happening around here that I can't explain.
- 34:03Speaker 1: We have to find this thing. I don't feel good.
- 34:22Speaker 4: About this.
- 34:26Speaker 6: Go!
- 34:27Speaker 1: I saw it. No one believes me.
- 34:29Speaker 5: I believe you.
- 34:37Speaker 1: What the hell?
- 34:40Speaker 3: Somewhere between where you are and where you're going, there's
- 34:46Speaker 3: a Super 8.
- 34:46Speaker 1: See you along the way.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Save your battery and your disposition.
- 34:52Speaker 4: When it rains, you can still enjoy the movie with
- 34:55Speaker 4: a Drizzle Guard Rain Visor. Simply press suction cups to
- 34:58Speaker 4: the windshield as shown in the detail on your instruction sheet.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Drizzle Guards are on sale now at the concessions.
- 35:21Speaker 1: So, you guys know we're broke, right? We're always broke.
- 35:26Speaker 1: I know. And yet we're trying to put this show together.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Now how the hell can we keep the show rolling
- 35:32Speaker 1: if we're broke and we can't do this? Sell special
- 35:35Speaker 1: fiddle fowl. Oh. Or instead, murder people. Are you just
- 35:43Speaker 1: taking random money out of their pockets?
- 35:44Speaker 5: Well, yeah.
- 35:45Speaker 1: Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Hopefully it
- 35:48Speaker 1: won't come to that. Especially if they're peeping. Some people
- 35:50Speaker 1: will get on board with this. Get on board with what?
- 35:54Speaker 1: The new Movie Meltdown Patreon page. And what is this?
- 35:58Speaker 1: If you go there, you can sponsor the show itself. Basically,
- 36:02Speaker 1: you just join the club. You join the Meltdown Club.
- 36:05Speaker 1: You become a milketeer. Do you get a special decoder ring?
- 36:08Speaker 1: We already sent those out, but those people, nobody cares.
- 36:10Speaker 1: I didn't get a decoder ring. You're not part of
- 36:12Speaker 1: the club.
- 36:13Speaker 4: I'm never part of the club.
- 36:16Speaker 1: You're part of the secret circle, though.
- 36:17Speaker 5: It's okay.
- 36:18Speaker 1: But if you become a milketeer, you can get special
- 36:21Speaker 1: episodes that only come to you.
- 36:24Speaker 6: I think you should do it right now.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Right now? I'm just saying. It's maybe a couple of bucks.
- 36:29Speaker 1: There's other levels you can kick in and get fancier.
- 36:32Speaker 5: Maybe a couple bucks.
- 36:32Speaker 1: You don't know. Fancier stuff. But really, just a couple
- 36:35Speaker 1: of bucks will keep things rolling. What'll get me a pony?
- 36:40Speaker 1: That's a really high level. I'll have to figure out
- 36:44Speaker 1: exactly what.
- 36:44Speaker 5: That's platinum membership right there.
- 36:46Speaker 1: That might be above platinum.
- 36:48Speaker 6: We'll have to see.
- 36:49Speaker 5: What is above platinum?
- 36:51Speaker 1: Titanium. Titanium.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Really?
- 36:55Speaker 1: Maybe that's a step below.
- 36:56Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 36:57Speaker 5: We'll have to see.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Aluminium level.
- 36:59Speaker 5: That's way below.
- 37:01Speaker 1: Not if you say it fancy. Yeah.
- 37:04Speaker 6: Unobtainium.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:08Speaker 5: Good luck with that.
- 37:09Speaker 1: But for the rest of you, go kick in a
- 37:10Speaker 1: couple bucks. Keep the show rolling. Go to patreon.com slash
- 37:14Speaker 1: movie meltdown. And if you don't know how to type
- 37:17Speaker 1: all that in, go to the movie meltdown.com page. And
- 37:19Speaker 1: the link's right there. And you can save this show.
- 37:23Speaker 1: And help me get a pony. Damn them, man. Save
- 37:26Speaker 1: the meltdown.
- 37:28Speaker 6: Get Missy a pony.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Yeah, priorities.
- 37:43Speaker 4: Raise your right hand.
- 37:45Speaker 1: And repeat after me.
- 37:48Speaker 3: We are drive-in mutants.
- 37:53Speaker 6: We are not like other people.
- 37:57Speaker 2: We are sick. We are disgusting.
- 38:01Speaker 1: We are disgusting.
- 38:03Speaker 6: We believe in blood.
- 38:04Speaker 1: We believe in blood. In breasts.
- 38:07Speaker 5: In breasts.
- 38:08Speaker 1: And in beasts.
- 38:10Speaker 5: And in beasts.
- 38:10Speaker 1: This is Joe Bob Briggs and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 38:13Speaker 4: As long as one drive-in remains.
- 38:15Speaker 1: As long as one drive-in remains. On the planet Earth.
- 38:19Speaker 1: On the planet Earth.
- 38:21Speaker 5: We will party like jungle animals.
- 38:23Speaker 7: We will party like jungle animals.
- 38:25Speaker 3: We will boogie till we puke.
- 38:27Speaker 1: We will boogie till we puke.
- 38:28Speaker 4: The drive-in will never die.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Amen. All right. It is one of those, I think,
- 39:02Speaker 1: because I said at the time we didn't have a
- 39:04Speaker 1: camera or we weren't doing it. I do remember about
- 39:06Speaker 1: that same age. Like I was pretty damn young. I
- 39:10Speaker 1: hung out with, again, the closest thing to like friends
- 39:13Speaker 1: a weirdo like me had was just the kids that
- 39:15Speaker 1: happened to live around me. And we were all just
- 39:17Speaker 1: kind of forced together. Like when I think back, I'm like,
- 39:18Speaker 1: we didn't have a lot in common, any of us.
- 39:21Speaker 1: But we were just like, whatever, you live next door
- 39:22Speaker 1: to me. This is who I play with. So I
- 39:25Speaker 1: do remember at one point we had got this idea
- 39:27Speaker 1: that we wanted, again, it was the times of storm.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Wars so like we wanted to make a sci-fi epic
- 39:33Speaker 1: and her dad next door had a Super 8 camera
- 39:37Speaker 1: that I don't think had sound so who needs sound
- 39:41Speaker 1: well this was probably my genius idea because I had
- 39:44Speaker 1: a tape recorder So we were going to take the old, again,
- 39:48Speaker 1: I'm describing it for you, the flat one that you
- 39:50Speaker 1: push record and play at the same time. I had that,
- 39:53Speaker 1: that every kid I think was issued at that era.
- 39:55Speaker 1: And I think we were going to run sound on
- 39:57Speaker 1: that and we're going to shoot it with the Super
- 39:59Speaker 1: 8 and I'm sure it was going to sync up
- 40:01Speaker 1: and look great. Thinking about that now, that's such a
- 40:04Speaker 1: ridiculous idea. But we did like come up with like this,
- 40:07Speaker 1: I'm trying to think if we even scripted it or
- 40:10Speaker 1: we just like play acted it so much for like
- 40:13Speaker 1: weeks on end that we remembered our parts. So we
- 40:15Speaker 1: did have some version of costumes and one of them
- 40:18Speaker 1: was supposed to be like an alien. And of course,
- 40:21Speaker 1: I was some sort of Luke knockoff trying to think.
- 40:24Speaker 1: I think I named your robe again. I think. Well, no,
- 40:27Speaker 1: I probably had a vest of some sort.
- 40:29Speaker 5: OK, you were old enough. OK, OK.
- 40:30Speaker 1: But yeah, I was I was old enough to have
- 40:32Speaker 1: production to what I'm trying to think we had. I
- 40:37Speaker 1: don't think we had much in the ways of special effects.
- 40:39Speaker 1: I think it was just like in the leaves in
- 40:41Speaker 1: the front yard of her yard next door. And where
- 40:43Speaker 1: the kid from across the street was the alien. And
- 40:45Speaker 1: then he like jumped in at the wrong moment and
- 40:47Speaker 1: screwed it up. And we didn't get extra takes. So like,
- 40:50Speaker 1: I remember like we all were yelling at him some
- 40:52Speaker 1: point for ruining the take. But the thing is, I
- 40:56Speaker 1: don't either like it got messed up. Like, I don't
- 40:58Speaker 1: think the video ever even survived. Like, I don't think
- 41:00Speaker 1: it ever came out the other end. But I had
- 41:03Speaker 1: the tape because that's why I think that was my
- 41:06Speaker 1: idea because it was my tape recorder because I had
- 41:08Speaker 1: the tape and I had the tape forever. So you
- 41:11Speaker 1: could go back like years later. I would be like,
- 41:13Speaker 1: what the hell?
- 41:14Speaker 5: Oh yeah.
- 41:14Speaker 1: And you could hear like whatever dumb dialogue we'd come
- 41:17Speaker 1: up with. And then us yelling at that kid.
- 41:21Speaker 5: I was lucky enough to live in an apartment complex
- 41:23Speaker 5: with a bunch of nerds and a few of us
- 41:26Speaker 5: got together and we, we couldn't have, we didn't have
- 41:28Speaker 5: a camera at the time. So what we did is
- 41:30Speaker 5: we did our own audio versions of things. we would
- 41:33Speaker 5: do our own version of Siskel and Ebert because we
- 41:36Speaker 5: hated them. So we did. It was like Rick the
- 41:37Speaker 5: Razor and Eric Steele. And instead of playing the film pieces,
- 41:42Speaker 5: like clips, we would literally play, because we all collected soundtracks,
- 41:46Speaker 5: we would play the piece of the soundtrack as if
- 41:48Speaker 5: you're watching the movie. And then we would review it
- 41:50Speaker 5: and we did commercials. I still have those tapes. Oh,
- 41:53Speaker 5: my gosh.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Again, this is all leading.
- 41:55Speaker 5: And we had two tape recorders. We'd push record on
- 41:57Speaker 5: one with the music going and have an intro and
- 41:59Speaker 5: the other guys. And we're ready to go.
- 42:01Speaker 1: And we could edit it as long as we wanted.
- 42:04Speaker 5: This is production value, man. For 1987, I think it was. Yeah,
- 42:08Speaker 5: it was great.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Again, I think I brought this up on the show.
- 42:13Speaker 1: This is like domino effect of all the dumb things.
- 42:15Speaker 5: That led to this. All we did was collect things
- 42:18Speaker 5: that we loved, so we had to act like we
- 42:20Speaker 5: didn't like certain movies.
- 42:21Speaker 1: Well, sure.
- 42:22Speaker 5: So nobody liked, say, Phantasm, too.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Phantasm, stupid.
- 42:25Speaker 5: Or Hellraiser. Oh, my gosh. And of course we loved them,
- 42:28Speaker 5: so we would flip a coin or do.
- 42:29Speaker 2: You know.
- 42:30Speaker 1: You're the one that hates it.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Right, exactly.
- 42:31Speaker 5: You're the stupid one. One time I screwed up and said,
- 42:33Speaker 5: I hate this movie. Ha, wait, I know I don't.
- 42:36Speaker 5: Because I couldn't remember.
- 42:37Speaker 1: And then they yelled at you for doing it.
- 42:38Speaker 5: Who I was, yes.
- 42:39Speaker 1: We have to do another take. This is terrible.
- 42:42Speaker 5: No, we just kept it.
- 42:43Speaker 1: See, I remember, again, this is maybe another most direct
- 42:48Speaker 1: link to this nonsense you're listening to right now. This
- 42:51Speaker 1: was myself and my cousin, and she was a few
- 42:55Speaker 1: years older than me, but she was a, I say was,
- 42:58Speaker 1: and currently still is a showbiz kind of a gal.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Like she knew it from day one. She went into
- 43:03Speaker 1: like dance classes. She moved into like teaching dance there.
- 43:07Speaker 1: She opened her own dance studio for God's sake. So
- 43:10Speaker 1: she knew showbiz.
- 43:11Speaker 5: So the seed was there.
- 43:12Speaker 1: So it was in her already. I was like the
- 43:15Speaker 1: dorky kid that didn't know how to do that stuff.
- 43:17Speaker 1: Like again, she was like, let's get on stage. And
- 43:19Speaker 1: I'm like, can I run the lights? She really would.
- 43:21Speaker 5: I would do the exact same thing.
- 43:23Speaker 1: She would literally, at my grandmother's house, she'd be like,
- 43:26Speaker 1: I'm going to put on a show. And I'm like,
- 43:27Speaker 1: I'm going to hold this lamp towards you.
- 43:28Speaker 5: I've got the lamp.
- 43:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I've got this. Don't you worry. If we had ropes,
- 43:32Speaker 1: I'd be pulling them. But we didn't have a fancy,
- 43:34Speaker 1: I couldn't be a grip, much as I wanted to.
- 43:37Speaker 1: But again, I think there was the technical aspect there
- 43:39Speaker 1: that was already laying the groundwork. So ours became more of,
- 43:43Speaker 1: when I think about it now, it was somewhere between
- 43:45Speaker 1: a variety show and a.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Infomercial wow or just like a skit comedy thing because
- 43:53Speaker 1: we again i'm using the same tape recorder i believe
- 43:56Speaker 1: so it became an audio show and that's why i'm
- 43:58Speaker 1: like what's the same dumb thing i'm doing now right
- 44:01Speaker 1: only this was again i try not to do bits
- 44:04Speaker 1: on here because it feels so and and it bothers
- 44:07Speaker 1: me when i see other shows that like that's their
- 44:08Speaker 1: whole thing is some sort of fake bit that they're
- 44:12Speaker 1: doing and they're putting on accents and i i can't
- 44:15Speaker 1: handle it i just i guess it is like i'm
- 44:19Speaker 1: fine with it in in the movie end of it
- 44:21Speaker 1: but somehow i'm leaving that's true but this but maybe
- 44:25Speaker 1: it's just me revolting against my younger self because that's
- 44:28Speaker 1: more or less what we were doing we were taking
- 44:30Speaker 1: like you know it was the early days so there
- 44:32Speaker 1: was still variety shows and crap on tv so i
- 44:35Speaker 1: think there was a little of that because i wanted
- 44:36Speaker 1: like my own theme song for everything So which I
- 44:39Speaker 1: think I just stole the Rocky and Bullwinkle like in
- 44:41Speaker 1: theme because that is a great fucking song. So there's
- 44:44Speaker 1: the first that and then I think we were just
- 44:47Speaker 1: kind of mimicking all the others. So this SNL was
- 44:49Speaker 1: already a thing. So I think we're kind of ripping
- 44:51Speaker 1: that off. I remember directly ripping off jokes from I
- 44:54Speaker 1: Love Lucy, which shows you the kind of dorky kid
- 44:56Speaker 1: I was. But yeah, and then we would do like
- 45:00Speaker 1: little segments and it would be like, here's two minutes.
- 45:03Speaker 1: And sometimes it was like bad commercials. So it really
- 45:06Speaker 1: was just like our own bad SNL thing. Only in
- 45:10Speaker 1: audio form. And we were dumb kids. And again, for
- 45:14Speaker 1: years I had that tape. And if I found that now,
- 45:16Speaker 1: it would probably be the most horrifying thing I would
- 45:19Speaker 1: ever have to listen to.
- 45:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:20Speaker 5: Let's go back to first. What was the first Halloween
- 45:22Speaker 5: costume you had? Tis the season.
- 45:24Speaker 1: That is.
- 45:25Speaker 5: Was it Ben Cooper?
- 45:27Speaker 1: I believe I have discussed it on the show in
- 45:29Speaker 1: the past.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Oh, damn.
- 45:30Speaker 1: But for you guys, you probably have died since then.
- 45:33Speaker 1: Those people don't listen anymore. So for anyone new, I
- 45:39Speaker 1: think the very first time that... It doesn't really count
- 45:42Speaker 1: when you have no say in it. When you're a
- 45:44Speaker 1: little kid... Because then it's like some sort of hobo
- 45:48Speaker 1: or some shit. I don't know. They just put me
- 45:49Speaker 1: in the... As if I wasn't wearing enough god-awful stuff
- 45:52Speaker 1: when I look back at old photos of me.
- 45:53Speaker 5: Or one that you thought was cool.
- 45:54Speaker 1: How about that? Yeah, the first one that I remember
- 45:57Speaker 1: having a hand in picking was kind of that same era.
- 46:02Speaker 1: And I said it before. I bounced back and forth
- 46:04Speaker 1: between what became probably the two biggest influences in my life.
- 46:08Speaker 1: Star Wars characters and... Old school monsters. So I had
- 46:12Speaker 1: the one that was the most awesome of the store-bought ones.
- 46:16Speaker 1: I had the Creature from the Black Lagoon that I
- 46:18Speaker 1: hung on to forever because it was that awesome mask
- 46:21Speaker 1: that if I see them now, they're a fortune. So
- 46:24Speaker 1: I wish it wouldn't have gotten smashed in our attic,
- 46:25Speaker 1: which is where I saw it last many years ago.
- 46:28Speaker 5: And the plastic.
- 46:29Speaker 1: And the vinyl-y outfit that probably said Creature from the
- 46:32Speaker 1: Black Lagoon on it. I don't even remember what the
- 46:33Speaker 1: hell it said on the chest. Usually they had words
- 46:35Speaker 1: on the chest, which was the dumbest thing.
- 46:36Speaker 5: I think it was almost yellow.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it was pretty generic.
- 46:39Speaker 5: Mine was Casper.
- 46:40Speaker 1: All right, Casper's cool.
- 46:42Speaker 5: I thought that was cool as hell. I was that tiny.
- 46:45Speaker 5: And then, of course, Dark Vader. Dark Vader.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Was this a knockoff version?
- 46:48Speaker 5: I didn't know what the hell Darth Vader. Because I
- 46:51Speaker 5: was a child. And that's what Darth Vader did. That's
- 46:54Speaker 5: who he was.
- 46:55Speaker 1: I'm constantly like, do I correct?
- 46:57Speaker 5: I didn't have a VHS to watch at the time.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Well, none of us did.
- 47:00Speaker 5: It wasn't an option.
- 47:02Speaker 1: And for 17 years, you were like, this is the
- 47:05Speaker 1: only way I have to remember it. I have collector's cards.
- 47:08Speaker 5: Remember when he would take your child by the throat,
- 47:12Speaker 5: by the jawbone, and pick them up.
- 47:14Speaker 1: There's no way that would happen nowadays.
- 47:16Speaker 5: Huh?
- 47:16Speaker 1: Did he sign a photo? Yes. I still have.
- 47:19Speaker 5: Yes, me too. I do. I just moved.
- 47:20Speaker 1: I wonder if this was the same one. I think
- 47:22Speaker 1: they did it different times.
- 47:23Speaker 5: Mine is like a white production still, and he's doing,
- 47:25Speaker 5: he's got his hands on his belt line, which he
- 47:29Speaker 5: never does in the films until obviously the damn prequels.
- 47:32Speaker 5: And he's standing there, and I'm like, as of now,
- 47:34Speaker 5: I'm like, wow, that's a prequel pose. But he did
- 47:38Speaker 5: it for production still at that time. I still have it.
- 47:40Speaker 1: When I look back, mine is like so much worse,
- 47:44Speaker 1: but yet kind of, so much more awesome. Because I'm
- 47:48Speaker 1: pretty sure, at least that was a production still. Or
- 47:50Speaker 1: something like 20th Century Fox probably made up.
- 47:52Speaker 5: Yeah, it looked professional as hell.
- 47:54Speaker 1: This one may have just been the dude they knew
- 47:57Speaker 1: that had the suit. Some guy probably just spent all
- 48:00Speaker 1: of his money to buy a suit. Because it's not
- 48:02Speaker 1: like you could go get them in a store like now.
- 48:04Speaker 1: You can just throw down a couple thousand dollars and
- 48:06Speaker 1: have a stormtrooper hanging around in your house. But back then,
- 48:10Speaker 1: you had to go get that level. Because it really
- 48:14Speaker 1: did look good, what little I can remember of it.
- 48:17Speaker 1: But I remember he was at the Basher Manor Mall,
- 48:20Speaker 1: which is now turned into a parking lot and now
- 48:22Speaker 1: has like a Lowe's there and some shit. But like
- 48:25Speaker 1: at the time it was a mall and they were
- 48:27Speaker 1: doing their big signing. So like I got this photo
- 48:30Speaker 1: and I stood there and it was super cool. But
- 48:32Speaker 1: then when I looked at it like years later, it's
- 48:35Speaker 1: him outside.
- 48:37Speaker 5: Oh, I don't remember that at all.
- 48:38Speaker 1: It's a guy in a Darth... I'm assuming it's not
- 48:40Speaker 1: David Prowse. No. It's a guy in a Darth Vader costume.
- 48:43Speaker 5: Empire Strikes Back actually came out when I went and
- 48:45Speaker 5: saw him at the Batch from Animal.
- 48:46Speaker 1: It might have been, yeah. Because I feel like I
- 48:48Speaker 1: was a little older because I do remember this stuff.
- 48:50Speaker 1: So it was probably more like Empire. But when I
- 48:53Speaker 1: look back at it, it's like him standing in the park.
- 48:55Speaker 1: possibly this park right now it's him and there's like
- 48:58Speaker 1: trees behind it's like green it looks so surreal when
- 49:02Speaker 1: i look at it now because i'm like it's darth vader.
- 49:04Speaker 5: Who you know it's indoor but before.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Indoor completely in black yeah we weren't used and he
- 49:08Speaker 1: wasn't really hanging out much on indoor so like we
- 49:10Speaker 1: never really see him out outside of like cold metal
- 49:13Speaker 1: behind him you know it's like that's the only way
- 49:15Speaker 1: we know him is just like steel everywhere behind him
- 49:18Speaker 1: or like a Hoth scene or maybe yeah the Hoth
- 49:21Speaker 1: scene was so freaking awesome because it's just white and
- 49:23Speaker 1: this big black badass walking in and you're just like
- 49:25Speaker 1: oh my god this is the coolest thing ever so
- 49:27Speaker 1: when I look back on it and I'm just like
- 49:30Speaker 1: what the hell is this And he's got his arms
- 49:34Speaker 1: out almost like he's flying. He's almost doing the rose
- 49:37Speaker 1: on the front of the Titanic.
- 49:38Speaker 5: Maybe he's enjoying his cape.
- 49:39Speaker 1: He's holding his cape out. That's what it was. They
- 49:41Speaker 1: were trying to do more of a Dracula, like, hold
- 49:43Speaker 1: your cape out. I'm sure some idiot, probably from the
- 49:46Speaker 1: Olin Mills at the mall, was like, let's go take
- 49:49Speaker 1: some pictures outside in the parking lot. It's so bad.
- 49:53Speaker 1: And he, no, now that I think about it, it
- 49:55Speaker 1: has to be post-Jedi because when this guy signed it,
- 50:00Speaker 1: I think I have previous meetings with Darth Vader when
- 50:02Speaker 1: I was younger.
- 50:02Speaker 5: You've met a lot of Darth Vader.
- 50:03Speaker 1: Because I have a poster somewhere that he signed that
- 50:06Speaker 1: it just says Darth Vader. What the fuck? Which I'm like,
- 50:08Speaker 1: that's not really how autographs, never mind. But you signed
- 50:12Speaker 1: a character, dude. But this one was kind of the
- 50:14Speaker 1: same thing on that photo. Because I remember now when
- 50:17Speaker 1: I think back, it said Darth Vader on the top.
- 50:20Speaker 1: But then it also said Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back,
- 50:23Speaker 1: and Return of the Jedi. So he just wrote the
- 50:26Speaker 1: random names of the movies on there. And at the bottom,
- 50:29Speaker 1: underneath his feet in the grass, it says, May the
- 50:32Speaker 1: Force be with you. So I need to find that
- 50:35Speaker 1: and put it back in a frame.
- 50:36Speaker 5: That's not very Sith-like, but okay.
- 50:37Speaker 1: No, it's not. Well, I mean... oh my goodness it's
- 50:41Speaker 1: a spiral the sith then that they just they neither
- 50:44Speaker 1: of them make any sense the jedi and the sith
- 50:46Speaker 1: they're weird.
- 50:47Speaker 5: Those first uh halloween costumes those first vhs those first
- 50:51Speaker 5: time picking up a movie.
- 50:52Speaker 1: So i but we got sidetracked i did have the
- 50:54Speaker 1: darth vader costume that was one of the ben cooper
- 50:56Speaker 1: ones i had so of my bouncing back and forth
- 50:59Speaker 1: i had creature we i had a I had a
- 51:02Speaker 1: couple of my mom made some really good costumes. So
- 51:04Speaker 1: she made an awesome, like to this day, if I
- 51:07Speaker 1: find it, it's an awesome Dracula cape that was black
- 51:10Speaker 1: on the outside, like shiny satiny red on the inside.
- 51:14Speaker 1: So it was like a nice blood effect inside. So
- 51:16Speaker 1: that you could be kind of like totally covered up
- 51:19Speaker 1: in black and then throw your arms out and it's
- 51:21Speaker 1: creepy red.
- 51:21Speaker 5: I made a Lydia cape for my daughter once. That's
- 51:23Speaker 5: what I'm saying. Like the cartoon one. It was double.
- 51:26Speaker 1: But she even put in a really awesome like pop-up
- 51:28Speaker 1: collar that like is the only time in the 80s
- 51:31Speaker 1: I was popping my collar. But I was Dracula, so
- 51:33Speaker 1: it was okay. But yeah, I remember doing that with
- 51:36Speaker 1: like tons of like white creepy makeup and blood on
- 51:39Speaker 1: my fangs and probably my bad pop-in plastic fangs. I'm
- 51:44Speaker 1: pretty sure that's what I did.
- 51:45Speaker 5: Those are so good though.
- 51:46Speaker 1: They're awesomely terrible because they just cut the inside of
- 51:49Speaker 1: your mouth. They were so terrible.
- 51:51Speaker 5: I recently went through pictures while moving and I found
- 51:54Speaker 5: an old picture of one of my Christmas gifts and
- 51:56Speaker 5: it was the original Universal Dracula. Where you push the
- 51:58Speaker 5: button on the back and his arms would come together. Nice.
- 52:01Speaker 5: Remember they came with the Frankenstein monster and the table?
- 52:04Speaker 1: I didn't. Yeah, I didn't.
- 52:05Speaker 5: Oh, those were amazing. They came with claws. They weren't Mingo.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Again, the things I wish I had. They may have
- 52:09Speaker 1: been Mingo.
- 52:10Speaker 5: I don't remember. I wish I still had it, but
- 52:11Speaker 5: I don't remember. It didn't come in like a bubble.
- 52:13Speaker 1: So much of my crap I do still have, but
- 52:15Speaker 1: there are specific things that I think back and go,
- 52:17Speaker 1: where the hell did that go?
- 52:18Speaker 5: Oh, I have one friend and we'll just name off stuff.
- 52:20Speaker 5: He's like, I still got it. I still have it. Well,
- 52:22Speaker 5: his parents are still together. Lucky guy. And they still
- 52:24Speaker 5: live in the same place. They've lived forever. So it's like,
- 52:27Speaker 5: you know, a museum in his attic.
- 52:28Speaker 1: I mean, I didn't know it because that term.
- 52:29Speaker 5: Unlike us, we moved like every six months.
- 52:31Speaker 1: That term didn't exist at the time, but I was
- 52:34Speaker 1: and became a weird semi hoarder. The amount of stuff
- 52:37Speaker 1: that I have that makes no sense that I look
- 52:40Speaker 1: through these boxes that I keep shuffling around. I'm like,
- 52:42Speaker 1: what the hell do I have this? And like, I
- 52:44Speaker 1: don't throw it away, God forbid.
- 52:46Speaker 5: No, I have every movie ticket I can remember ever keeping.
- 52:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I still, I mean, from, I mean, I've showcased
- 52:51Speaker 1: cinema wins from years and years.
- 52:52Speaker 5: Yeah, well, you saw me at the Rocky documentary filming.
- 52:54Speaker 5: I still have the very first Vogue ticket for Rocky
- 52:57Speaker 5: that I ever went to.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I have, I think all of those for mine too.
- 53:00Speaker 1: There were a few I would like, because back then
- 53:03Speaker 1: it didn't print out what it was. So I think
- 53:05Speaker 1: there were a few I would take a pencil and
- 53:06Speaker 1: write like whatever the hell happened that night. I'm like,
- 53:09Speaker 1: the first time this dude I know played Riff Raff
- 53:12Speaker 1: and like this was the first.
- 53:13Speaker 5: Piece from the newspaper and put it next to the ticket.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Still have that this is the level of.
- 53:19Speaker 7: Dorkiness oh man dorkiness yeah I appreciate we were crafting
- 53:23Speaker 7: we just didn't think about it that.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Way I appreciate finding other people that are this level
- 53:27Speaker 1: of dorky and specifically like movie related it's so yeah
- 53:34Speaker 1: more Halloween fun of my movie tie-ins we did another
- 53:38Speaker 1: like weird sort of homemade but again i i realized
- 53:42Speaker 1: how much they were all just classic horror and you
- 53:45Speaker 1: to me universal monsters but i mean universal just stole
- 53:48Speaker 1: them from classic folklore and or novels anyway so this
- 53:51Speaker 1: was a werewolf one which was one of the few
- 53:53Speaker 1: rubber mask i got a it's a pretty thin rubber
- 53:55Speaker 1: mask that i got it probably kmart or whatever but
- 53:59Speaker 1: i wanted to like up the ante so like my
- 54:02Speaker 1: Grandmother at some point had made some sort of furry costume. Again,
- 54:06Speaker 1: probably- Making costumes is so great. Probably hand me down
- 54:09Speaker 1: from my cousin because I did get a couple of
- 54:11Speaker 1: weird versions from her that I then doctored into like,
- 54:15Speaker 1: mine's going to be a cool monster.
- 54:16Speaker 5: We didn't have Michael Myers masks. And one of my
- 54:18Speaker 5: best friends just painted a mask and everyone.
- 54:21Speaker 1: Knew who it was.
- 54:22Speaker 5: Or a freaking hoodie. And I was like, it's Michael
- 54:24Speaker 5: Myers because there was nothing else to reference it to.
- 54:27Speaker 1: You couldn't buy it in the store. Hell no.
- 54:29Speaker 5: Well, the 88, it didn't come out yet.
- 54:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:31Speaker 1: So- Spencer's gift hadn't taken over the world. Oh, man. Man,
- 54:36Speaker 1: that's another one of those October memories.
- 54:38Speaker 5: Go to Target and be like, oh, there it is.
- 54:39Speaker 5: I'm going to go.
- 54:40Speaker 1: But for a long time, people, it's funny now how
- 54:44Speaker 1: bankable Halloween is that they just totally get into it.
- 54:47Speaker 5: That's why finding those old tin lunchboxes that are vintage
- 54:51Speaker 5: is different from saying, no offense, a NECA one.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that I bought at the store next to 48
- 54:57Speaker 1: others that look just like it with different pictures on
- 54:59Speaker 1: the front.
- 55:00Speaker 5: I just sold my original Gremlins... Yeah. A thermos and everything.
- 55:04Speaker 1: I was.
- 55:04Speaker 5: I had a yard sale a couple years ago.
- 55:06Speaker 1: I was.
- 55:06Speaker 5: Or no, last week.
- 55:07Speaker 1: One of the few that I had and.
- 55:09Speaker 5: I cried.
- 55:09Speaker 1: It kept in good.
- 55:11Speaker 6: I did.
- 55:11Speaker 1: I feel for you. I feel like... I was surprised
- 55:14Speaker 1: it was in as good a shape as it was.
- 55:17Speaker 1: I have my Clash of the Titans lunchbox.
- 55:20Speaker 4: Whoa.
- 55:21Speaker 1: I was, again, one of the handful of dorks that
- 55:23Speaker 1: thought that was cool at the time.
- 55:24Speaker 5: Which one was it? Which one was on the front?
- 55:26Speaker 1: It's got... It had a different on each side. It
- 55:28Speaker 1: had one that was... I think it's Hamlin when he's
- 55:33Speaker 1: holding Bubo, maybe? It's kind of a close-up of him.
- 55:35Speaker 5: I remember that one.
- 55:35Speaker 1: And then the other, I think, was maybe a shot
- 55:38Speaker 1: of him flying in to go attack the Kraken.
- 55:40Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the one I remember.
- 55:42Speaker 1: I remember that on one side, but I feel like
- 55:43Speaker 1: the other had like a... It's kind of that puzzled
- 55:46Speaker 1: look of him going, what the hell is this metal bird?
- 55:48Speaker 1: There's that weird look that he gets of like, what
- 55:50Speaker 1: the hell is this? And I think that's the shot
- 55:52Speaker 1: they chose for the front of it. And it did
- 55:54Speaker 1: have like an artwork on the thermos that had him...
- 55:57Speaker 1: This was different. It was him... With the helmet on,
- 56:01Speaker 1: which he has the helmet for so little of the movie.
- 56:04Speaker 5: Wow.
- 56:04Speaker 1: But I feel like the artwork had him with the
- 56:06Speaker 1: helmet and holding the sword up or something. And it
- 56:09Speaker 1: was like a weird variation artwork that like I almost
- 56:12Speaker 1: never see now. So I need to dig this out.
- 56:15Speaker 5: The thing about this time of year for us is
- 56:16Speaker 5: like nostalgia and people seem to be hating on nostalgia
- 56:19Speaker 5: right now. That's fine. But I love the memories of
- 56:22Speaker 5: going trick-or-treating when it's zero degrees outside and almost snowing.
- 56:26Speaker 1: Not the 90 it is today. And your hands are turning.
- 56:28Speaker 5: Blue holding onto that damn pillowcase.
- 56:30Speaker 1: And it was annoying because you were still a kid,
- 56:32Speaker 1: so you still kind of had to abide by dumb
- 56:34Speaker 1: parental rules. So I'm just kind of like, I'm like, man.
- 56:37Speaker 5: We trick-or-treated until the party stopped at 1 a.m.
- 56:40Speaker 1: But there's still basic rules like it's freaking cold outside,
- 56:43Speaker 1: get your coat. I'm like, fuck, Yoda doesn't wear a coat. Nope.
- 56:47Speaker 1: Because I was Yoda one year.
- 56:48Speaker 5: Oh, that's awesome.
- 56:49Speaker 1: And I specifically, in my walk home from school, cutting
- 56:52Speaker 1: through the creek, which I did pretty much every day,
- 56:55Speaker 1: I found this giant ass leg. It was about as
- 56:58Speaker 1: big around as my fist, this log that I referred
- 57:01Speaker 1: to it as, which became my Yoda stick.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh.
- 57:03Speaker 1: Because Yoda had to have a stick. So when I
- 57:05Speaker 1: walked around the neighborhood, in addition to my pumpkin, I
- 57:07Speaker 1: also had a giant freaking log because it was my
- 57:10Speaker 1: Yoda walking stick because Yoda had a freaking cane.
- 57:13Speaker 5: You had to accessorize.
- 57:14Speaker 1: I had to be authentic. I had to add stuff.
- 57:17Speaker 1: Which I got sidetracked. So that was my werewolf, too.
- 57:21Speaker 1: I took that one up a couple of notches. The
- 57:23Speaker 1: first one I just got, which, again, probably had been
- 57:25Speaker 1: some sort of fancy fur coat for my cousin that
- 57:28Speaker 1: I then turned into a bastardized werewolf coat, which looked
- 57:31Speaker 1: cool when I remember. And then, again, I think I
- 57:34Speaker 1: suckered my grandmother into doing this because I had those
- 57:38Speaker 1: kind of gloves, like all your generic Halloween gloves. But
- 57:40Speaker 1: this one was at least sort of a tan color.
- 57:43Speaker 1: And then someone, I'm assuming my grandmother... glued fur onto
- 57:46Speaker 1: the back of the hand, so I actually had furry hands.
- 57:49Speaker 5: Thank you, Grandma.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Yep, shout out. She was an awesome grandma. But that's
- 57:55Speaker 1: what the costume was supposed to be. Again, I took
- 57:59Speaker 1: it up a notch. I had to accessorize, being the
- 58:01Speaker 1: dork that I was. At that same time, don't know
- 58:04Speaker 1: if you had these, they had these, I don't even
- 58:06Speaker 1: remember what the hell they were called. They were just
- 58:08Speaker 1: like plastic glasses, but they had little light-ups, like two
- 58:12Speaker 1: LEDs in the eyes that lit up red. Whoa. I
- 58:15Speaker 1: got the brilliant idea of like, okay.
- 58:17Speaker 5: That was high tech for me.
- 58:18Speaker 1: I'm going to put, well, it just had a nine
- 58:19Speaker 1: volt battery and a trigger. Oh, okay, yeah. You just
- 58:21Speaker 1: hit it with your thumb and lit up whenever you
- 58:23Speaker 1: wanted to, which again, I just wore it around the
- 58:25Speaker 1: house because I was a dork, and I thought that
- 58:27Speaker 1: was really cool that I had light up eyes. That Halloween,
- 58:31Speaker 1: the genius thing, like a bolt of lightning, I was like,
- 58:34Speaker 1: I'm going to put those on first, then put my
- 58:36Speaker 1: mask on, and the werewolf is going to have light
- 58:38Speaker 1: up red eyes.
- 58:39Speaker 5: Oh, wow.
- 58:40Speaker 1: Holy shit. I will say that's one of the few
- 58:43Speaker 1: times I remember- Usually, people wait on their porch and
- 58:48Speaker 1: try to freak out the kids. The parents would be
- 58:50Speaker 1: sitting on the porch, and I would come up, and
- 58:52Speaker 1: my eyes would start going. They'd be like, whoa. I
- 58:54Speaker 1: remember catching parents off guard with like, what the hell
- 58:57Speaker 1: is that?
- 58:58Speaker 5: That's amazing.
- 58:58Speaker 1: That kid is possessed. What the hell?
- 59:00Speaker 5: The only thing that I remember, the level of trying
- 59:03Speaker 5: to make things different, adding to a costume. I took
- 59:07Speaker 5: when the very first Freddy Krueger deluxe masks came out.
- 59:11Speaker 5: I bought one of those. They had two different ones.
- 59:13Speaker 1: I'm trying to think back. Did it even look that good?
- 59:15Speaker 5: Oh, it was awesome. I feel like the first- It
- 59:17Speaker 5: was based off of the, I believe, the third one.
- 59:20Speaker 5: Which is an awesome movie. Which sucked, but whatever. But
- 59:24Speaker 5: I took that mask. Because it was bald head and
- 59:27Speaker 5: added the hatchet scar and made mine into a Friday
- 59:30Speaker 5: the 13th. Yeah. I was like, oh, I'm leveling up.
- 59:34Speaker 1: That is taking it.
- 59:35Speaker 5: To the next level. And I painted my own hockey mask.
- 59:37Speaker 5: And I got, yeah. And I went to, there was
- 59:41Speaker 5: a mall in the middle of an industrial park called
- 59:44Speaker 5: Bluegrass Parkway. And I cannot remember what it was called.
- 59:46Speaker 5: But you could hit every store.
- 59:48Speaker 1: That wasn't Raceland?
- 59:50Speaker 6: No, no, no.
- 59:51Speaker 1: There was Westland and Raceland, and both of those are
- 59:53Speaker 1: like a nightmare mall when I think about them now. No.
- 59:56Speaker 5: No, it's like, you know, where the softball fields are.
- 59:58Speaker 1: But yeah, I kind of remember that.
- 59:58Speaker 5: Not too far from J-Town.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: It doesn't matter, but it's all gone. It's all torn down.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Everything's gone. All of our childhood is torn away.
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: It's ridiculous. Now it's probably a climbing wall place.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: But yeah, and I still have the, they took a
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: Polaroid picture of me and I looked like shit. but
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: uh only now i look back at the time you
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: look just my dad's plaid shirt that i cut the
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: arms off because they were too long you know that
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: you know god but that was my idea that was
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: my leveling up of a.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: Costume at that time i do remember i.
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: Didn't start making them making them until i would say
- 1:00:31Speaker 5: almost like the late late.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: 80s yeah i didn't make a ton until i was
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: like grown like I feel like I got to that
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: point where I was like I guess I'm not gonna
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: have stuff anymore so I kind of stopped a little
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: bit for a few like the high school years I
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: think I didn't bother and then like once I was
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: like I had a freaking job I remember like oh
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: now I've got dorky friends that work with me again
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: we're all gonna dress up and then I think maybe
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: one other person dressed up I don't know I think
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: I did it for like two years and went it
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: really sucks going to work in a costume it's bad
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: enough I have to go to work I don't want
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: to go to work but it sucks having to go
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: in a costume as well so I think, yeah, there
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: was a big dry spell during those high school years
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: of like, it's not cool to dress up in costumes anymore.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: Which now I'm just too lazy.
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: I never did that.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: It's just too much work.
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: I never went through that phase. I'm so glad.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: And again, it might have just been like, eh, it's
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: too much trouble. Which I still, I've landed on that now.
- 1:01:20Speaker 5: No, we trick-or-treated until, what, 10th grade? And I remember
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: one of the last costumes.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: So you could drive yourself around?
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: Yeah, I was one of the misfits walking around the city.
- 1:01:32Speaker 5: And we went to every door and they said, aren't
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: you kind of big? I'll kick your ass.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: You're right, I am. That's why I can kick your ass.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: That's why you.
- 1:01:41Speaker 5: Need to hit apartment complexes. So that you could get
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: double the candy. I was like, I'm old enough. We're
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: going to do this easy.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Did you have, were you dragging around, like most of
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: the old kids were dragging around with a pillowcase at
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: that time.
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: Oh yeah, we had to change it. We had to
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: go back and get more pillowcases. Change out the pillowcase.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I was a dork because I always stuck with my pumpkin. Again,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: dork that I am. Not only do I still have it,
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: it's sitting in my room at home right now.
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: Oh, that's amazing.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Like when I moved, I was like, I've got a
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: spot right here. What can I... Oh, man, I need
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: to see that pumpkin every day. So it is one
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: of those old plastic formed. Mine is so weird. It
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: has a hat on. Like it's not even the standard
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: round one. It's round pumpkin, but he's also wearing like
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: a weird hat. And like he's got almost like reverse
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: faces on each side. Like it is one of those
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: that they only made like in the freaking 70s. And
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I was just like... When I look at it now,
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: I'm like, who would buy this weird thing for their kid?
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: But again, my parents were just like, what do you want,
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: that one? All right, good enough. Get your weird pumpkin
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: and let's go. So yeah, it is sitting in my
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: bedroom right now. So that's, again, the level of Halloween
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: dork that I am.
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: Oh, that's amazing. No, I wish I still had my
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: old pumpkins and jack-o'-lanterns.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: See, they got kind of generic after that because I
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: remember my sisters were younger and the ones they got
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: years later were way more generic. It wasn't that same
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: level of like, art history that I feel like when
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: I see those from that era now, they're selling them
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: for like a hundred dollars because they really are like
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: a weird thing that they only made for that span
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: of a decade or so. And then they became more
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: generic plastic and a little more prefab and they cranked
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: out thousands of them. But like, I feel like those
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: ones that came out earlier are like super weird and
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: like personalized because they only made limited runs of them.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: So I'm, I am glad I hung onto that.
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: But do you remember trick or treating until after midnight?
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: We did. Again, I think we were dorks, so I
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: didn't do that.
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: We would go in the apartment complexes and we would
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: hear the party. It's like that scene out of Trick
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: or Treat. Like, you want anything? Do I?
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03:43Speaker 5: Oh, man. It was great, but they weren't trying to
- 1:03:46Speaker 5: change the day. If it fell on a Tuesday, I
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: didn't care if I went to school the next day
- 1:03:51Speaker 5: or not.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: You weren't at the mall? No.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: You weren't in a parking lot trunk-retreating.
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: We did. We did get looped into that one scare
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: where we took the candy to some place and had
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: it x-rayed. It wasn't the hospital, but it wasn't that.
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: They did that. I remember that. I don't think we
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: ever did that. Because somebody got poisoned. Some asshole poisoned
- 1:04:07Speaker 5: his son. I forgot. It's like a family thing.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: I remember that.
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: Like the reality of it. I remember that.
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: Gosh.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: The more sad version because in reality it never happened.
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: The way that they mythized it. No, no, no.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: They just blew it up.
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: They blew it up to kill the Samhain. There's a
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: little sound in all of this.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Try to destroy Halloween. But it didn't work because it
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: came back and it is the biggest money maker ever.
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: They put it out. People complain about Christmas decorations coming
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: out in October. Halloween comes out in July.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: That's why I start bitching when I'm like, no, no,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: you keep your Christmas out of my, November, whatever. You
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: can put that shit out. I mean, Thanksgiving gets screwed anyway.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: It never has anything but some random turkey stuff. But like,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Keep your Christmas bullshit out of my Halloween.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: I totally understand until about a year ago when I
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: started doing the Krampus celebration.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: That's its own bastardize in between spots.
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: Because right now I can go and buy jingle bells
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: and blood at the same time.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: That is a magical time of year.
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: We just did the Louisville Halloween parade. And I was like, well, okay,
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: I got to put something together. I got to put
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: something that's Krampus. So let's do that. Here's blood and
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: some jingle bells. That's exactly what we did. We did
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: that last year.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: It was great.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: And that giant log I was dragging around to hit
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: children with.
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: Oh, my God. Yeah, Yoda blood. Yoda blood on your log.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: But that's what I was getting to earlier, too.
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: I totally understand people's hate towards Christmas when it comes early.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the thing. I don't hate it.
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: What the hell?
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: I just want it in December.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: I celebrate Yule anyways, damn it.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like I want my Festivus in December. I
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: don't want it crossing over and messing with my Halloween.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: But I do remember the– that's what I was saying earlier.
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: Like, it was– The thing about now is at least
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: people now, in this day and age, they extend Halloween afterwards.
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: There will be parties afterwards because they know there's so
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: many going on.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: Especially if it falls in the middle of the week. Right.
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: I have a friend that's doing an event like a
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: week or two later. A few haunted houses stay open.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:53Speaker 5: You know, if they're smart guys, hello.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: I feel like, yeah, I feel like it is, a
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: lot of it's just because it became a moneymaker, but
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: it is sort of like that celebration that people are like, oh, no,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: this is awesome. I feel like it was kind of
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: dying there in the 90s, like they were sucking the
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: life out of it, and then they got the adult-themed
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: version of it.
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: Well, they really dumbed it down with the really oversized,
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: you know, swords made out of plastic and putting the
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: orange caps on the guns and all that.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: But I think that's what saved it was the adult parties. Like,
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: they started, like, when your Halloween stores started opening up
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: and adults went, Oh, we can have our own adult
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: wink wink party, which means every girl can just dress
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: slutty and then guys can get drunk. Or both. Again,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: I get it. I appreciate it in its own weird way.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: But it's also there's a level of creepiness that I
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: don't appreciate. So I don't know. It's a very confusing
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: time for my male brain. I'm like, I don't want
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: to be that dude that most drunken dudes at a
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: party are. But I appreciate that costume. So I fall
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: somewhere in between. I don't know what to do with it.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: But I was going to say, at the time before that,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: growing up, it was one of those. You did get
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: your airway. I would say Target. Your airway had its
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: cool couple of aisles of costumes. Kmart was, yeah, Kmart
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: and Zare, they would kind of deliver. But most places,
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: like now you can find stuff everywhere.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: Everywhere.
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: As I referenced earlier, the one for me was like
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: October 1st would roll around and I would hit the mall,
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: dork that I am, but freaking Spencer's Gifts. Now, Spencer's
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: now is kind of a joke. But Spencer back in
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: the day, like the entire store would almost.
- 1:07:29Speaker 5: Have you been to Spencer's recently?
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: I have.
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: Okay. They've upped their game again.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: I mean, they still try, but now I feel the
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: corporate hand. I feel the we have to compete with
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: Hot Topic-ness.
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: Oh, absolutely.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: That like didn't used to be there because there was
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: no Hot Topic. It was just a weirdo store in
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: the mall for back in the day for like. for
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: fake poop and like you know magic tricks and then
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: the naughty corner in the side like it really was
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: just like weird shit that nobody knew what to do
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: with back in the day but when october rolled around
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: like the whole store got transformed into almost like its
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: own makeshift mall haunted house oh yeah it's like there
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: were cobwebs everywhere strobe lights every mask was on its
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: own little head sitting up there on display and it
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: was just like it was the coolest thing in the
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: world And I just remember like... Well, you worked at
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: the mall.
- 1:08:12Speaker 5: Didn't you work in Suncoast?
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: I did.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: That was the mecca for.
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: This was pre... Yeah, this was pre-Suncoast. This was before
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: we even had one. We had... Spencer's is pretty much
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: all I had to go look at dorky stuff.
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: Greatest thing about Suncoast was the widescreen section. What people
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: still made funny. You're like, oh, I don't want to
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: watch the movies with the bars.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: You probably have to explain that to people because now
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: it doesn't even make sense. Now, either everything comes that
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: way and people don't even acknowledge it or your TV
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: readjust itself because your TV smarter than people.
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: Now, if it doesn't come that way, people get upset. Yeah.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: As they should.
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: And they'll chop the tops and bottoms off of old
- 1:08:46Speaker 5: movies to make people happy. I'm like, you just fucked
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: up the movie, man. Don't do that to Return of
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: the Living Dead.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: It wasn't made that way. Yeah, you need to learn
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: aspect ratios. I still don't fully, I'm still like the
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: least geeky about that stuff. I just know the way
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: it is. supposed to be.
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: I am not a format nerd. I never have been.
- 1:09:02Speaker 5: I still like VHS. I appreciate when people try to
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: make films look like crap.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: For nostalgia reasons, yeah.
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: I still appreciate high def, too. Yeah.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: And I think, yeah, it has... appeal in both areas.
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: Watching 3d at home on high def is just amazing.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: I feel like trying too hard to make it look
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: bad you cross a line into like what if i'm
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: watching like but if you're if it if.
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: That's the deep i don't care what it looks like
- 1:09:28Speaker 5: i care about the special features.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: Again that's fine yeah but but like the new when
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: people shoot stuff now like when the grindhouse thing got
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: over out of control And like everybody went out of
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: their way to make things look like shit. I'll watch them.
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: I'll take it.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: I like it for the cheesiness. But if they started
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: doing everything like that, I'd be like, wait.
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: It loses its show.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: What the hell? Yeah.
- 1:09:47Speaker 5: It does lose its special.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: So for the gimmick of it at the time, I
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: saw it and went, okay, this is fun. But then
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: it kind of like they started beating that horse a
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: little too much. So then I'm kind of like, that's fine.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: Put it in high def.
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: I don't care.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: So, like, yeah, I'm not.
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: Watching Star Trek, the original series in high def, is weird.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: It messes with it.
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: It does. I have to turn off the... I have
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: to turn it.
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: Yeah. There are things that need to be.
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: The settings. I'm like, oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: There are things that need.
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: The refreshing rate is way too much.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: To be the way they did it.
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: Now, watching King Kong? Holy crap.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: It's a different... Yeah. I don't know.
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: That looks really amazing when they can take those old
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: silver classics like that.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: They can clean it up.
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: And put them in high def. That's fantastic. I'll still
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: watch it on VHS. I don't care.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: Yeah. It is amazing when they salvage stuff.
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: Because they're saving it. They're preserving it too.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: It really is like. And a lot of them were
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: supposed to look like that.
- 1:10:35Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: They just got played a million times and got shipped
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: around the country and beat to hell and missing pieces.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: So the nostalgia thing that the Tarantino crew, it's not
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: supposed to be like that. It just ended up like that.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: Whereas the guys that made those old silent movies and
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: early King Kong and stuff, they were supposed.
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: To look good. You were watching a movie with lines
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: going through it. You didn't care as long as you
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: could get the gist of what was going on. Nowadays,
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: you don't have that.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: No.
- 1:11:02Speaker 5: A younger generation would understand that, and if they do,
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: that's pretty awesome. Yeah. But they're like, oh, I can't
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: see it. They're like, are you kidding me? You don't
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: know what a tracking line is.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Why can't you see it? Is your internet out? Why
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: can't you see it?
- 1:11:14Speaker 5: So when I talk to people, because I see them
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: every damn day at the Gore Club and things like that,
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: but I understand. I can see the look on their
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: face like, oh, you have no idea what I'm talking about.
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: But they want to know, except just like me. When
- 1:11:27Speaker 5: I was younger, my dad hated Hammer Films. oh this
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: is horrible this is garbage I'm like you don't understand
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: how amazing this is so but to him it was
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: a remake you're remaking my childhood and that's when I
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: I'm like holy crap now I'm at this age and
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: I totally understand what he's saying so I'm not gonna
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: try to have that mentality but he hated Christopher Lee
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: and Peter Cushing I'm like what the hell Barbara Steele
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: no no these are amazing these are great but that's
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: you know remaking my childhood.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: I think you also turn a corner where you just
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: get to be grumpy old man cause.
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: My I had a friend of me tell me that
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: the other day I'm like wow it's finally happening.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: Well, I'm halfway, but I don't want to get that, like, again,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: the artistic part of it, I don't want that to
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: happen to you. I am a cranky old bastard. I'm fine.
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: I acknowledge that in many aspects of my life.
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: Oh, we're sitting here bitching about everything right now. For
- 1:12:10Speaker 5: the last hour, we've been bitching.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: About everything new. We're just sappily nostalgic. Not as much bitching.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: And that's what I try to do. It's like I
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: try to look at it from a different... from a
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: different perspective like i try to be open-minded toward new
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: stuff that they're making i'm like you know just but
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: don't your death grip on your nostalgia isn't right it's
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: the way you like it that's fine that mentality you
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: can acknowledge like my dad yeah you can acknowledge it
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: i like it.
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: This way 25 stop sounding like my dad but.
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: Don't think that it's right or wrong that's good yeah
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: come on that's the kind of stuff that i see
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: my dad and like or he had it's a weird
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: like in between point of like that's stupid but he'll
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: watch this that's i'm like that's the same thing you're
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: watching the same like It's weird dividing lines of like,
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: I'm an old man and I get to decide this
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: is stupid. So I'm like, I'm trying not to go
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: down that road as time goes on.
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: Well, absolutely. The remade Poltergeist, which is not good, by
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: the way, but.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: At least I don't think it is. But there's ones
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: that are fun.
- 1:13:04Speaker 5: It took them 30 years to do it.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:13:06Speaker 5: Back in my dad's day, they did it every five years.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: With a lot of that stuff.
- 1:13:09Speaker 5: Cat Canary, Dracula. How many times has that been remade
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: before the 60s?
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: Well, we just got a new Star is Born. And
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: they were like, that used to come out every 20 years.
- 1:13:17Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: Literally.
- 1:13:18Speaker 5: We're ready for another jazz singer.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: Yeah. There had been three before the one. Like, we
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: skipped the 90s. We should have had a 90s version
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: of a Star is Born. We skipped that.
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: There are holy grails that you don't want to touch. But,
- 1:13:28Speaker 5: I mean, it's going to happen. You're going to see
- 1:13:30Speaker 5: a thing remake eventually.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: And I. always say well we already yeah.
- 1:13:34Speaker 5: And there's some good stuff in that there is i
- 1:13:37Speaker 5: mean is the best part where he leads right into
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: it i don't yeah i i like seeing all there's
- 1:13:41Speaker 5: that's where the axe comes from.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: The problem yeah i think that stuff is genius that
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: they bothered to tie all that together the problem with it.
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: He wants them all just to speak norwegian and not
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: be anything other um but that's.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: What i'm a dumb american so i'm like but i
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: want you to speak what i speak.
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: Right i know but make your own damn movie lord
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: kaufman says.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: And people should And I'll get out my Super 8
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: and I guess I'll try again. But, yeah, I think
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: there's also an aspect to it that I don't want
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: to be so close-minded that I can't like new stuff
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: and I can't appreciate new stuff.
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: I'm not there yet. I'm not that person yet.
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: But, again, it took a while. I feel like even
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: during the show, like, I remember us all being cranky
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: about remakes in the beginning. And there's like a slow
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: period of me doing this every week.
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: Oh, of this show.
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: Of doing just this show. Yeah. Just like in the decade.
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: I think you realize you're trying a lot of your
- 1:14:30Speaker 5: own like, fuck, I'm not.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Being like that.
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: I think back.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Well, I remember like everyone else in the group hating
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: all the remakes that were coming out. Oh, wow. And
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: I feel like all of them still do.
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: I understand that.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: But I've like slowly.
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: I always wanted to have that Todd-like look at movies.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: Even if it's new and brand new and polished and
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: made by somebody I don't like. It's not a Uwe
- 1:14:48Speaker 5: Boll movie. But you know what I'm saying?
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: I don't.
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: I try to be like. I'm going to watch this
- 1:14:52Speaker 5: and not think about everything that's come before.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: And I've started trying to get like.
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: I'm going to watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 17 and go,
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: you know what? Let's see what I like about it.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: I try to get as artist as I can with
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: all of this stuff because I think it is an
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: art form. It doesn't get the respect that a lot
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: of finer art forms get.
- 1:15:09Speaker 5: Plus being angry and grumpy and ripping things down gets
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: more attention than being positive about it.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: Which I think that does rub people the wrong way sometimes.
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: But.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: I think it is something that as long as they
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: bring something new, that's what I'm always saying about remakes.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: I'm like, don't do the exact same story. We've seen that.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: But if you take that concept that was a cool idea.
- 1:15:28Speaker 5: And do your own thing, it's.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: Just a different version. And they found really cool stuff
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: to do that isn't. possible in the old one you
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: know it's like the the stuff that came up in
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: that new evil dead i'm like these are cool additions
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: that like nobody would have thought or had a way.
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: To like tom savini's not a living dead i went
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: and saw the theater and i was like the guy
- 1:15:46Speaker 5: in front of me he was like oh shit this
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: is the remake i was like this is amazing shut
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: up it's in color but i know they didn't want
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: it that way originally but Man, you watch it now
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: and you're like, fuck, this is an amazing film.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: But they fixed the one thing. Like, the only thing
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: that's a weak point, because I think the original Night
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: of the Living Dead is genius. But the thing that's
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: a weak point is Barbara's so useless.
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: She snaps out of it and becomes a badass.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: And she's so useless. And you finally see someone who
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: deals with it. Now, granted, she just became weird and catatonic.
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: And I guess some people, that might be how they
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: respond to it. But it was great getting, and it
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: sucked making it the woman. Whereas this, we get a
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: woman who snaps out of it, becomes like one of
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: the more useful people who learns to deal with within
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: a few hours. It's like, okay, here's the world we're
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: living in now. Let's deal with this. Let's do it.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: And becomes a full-on badass by the end of the movie.
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: Well, I had met her and I talked to her
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: about that. And this was, I think she was doing
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: like a Babylon 5 tour or whatever for the Slanted
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: Fedora convention. Remember those? That's me.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: What are you talking about?
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: I know. And she focused on that. She's like, no, no, no, no.
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: We're updating the characters as well.
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: If you're going to, yeah. Why would you have somebody
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: in our... Even the 90 that it was, it's like.
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: I'm killing Cooper, and that's how it should be.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: Women shouldn't be shoved into that little corner. It was
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: bad enough you were doing it in the 60s.
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: That was early 90s.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: Yeah, that was early 90s. But it was already to
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: the point of like... That's the part that's weak. Everything
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: else still holds up amazingly in that first one. I
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: still feel like as good as I like the new remake.
- 1:17:19Speaker 5: It's a product of his time, except for even though
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: they were far ahead when it came to race and
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: all that, he still had.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: The gender role. He was pushing the envelope a little
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: bit in some of that. But I also feel like
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: some of the stuff shot in that first one is
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: a little creepier. And it may be the black and white.
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: It may be my weird nostalgia. I don't know. But
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: I look at it and go, this other stuff holds up.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: And I love what was going on in the other one,
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: but I'm like, if I have to pick between the two,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: I'm still probably going to go with that.
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: Plus, you're a tech nerd. You know that you're looking
- 1:17:46Speaker 5: at that lighting and go, they didn't have pinpoint lighting
- 1:17:49Speaker 5: back then. They had this freaking 4K over here in
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: the corner.
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: That's a camera.
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: They had to cut a hole in a piece of
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: fabric to make these lines go across their faces or whatever.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: A camera he borrowed from his work job probably.
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: That makes it a little bit different from your perspective
- 1:18:02Speaker 5: and mine is because a lot of people who are listening,
- 1:18:05Speaker 5: they understand the tech that goes into it. They understand
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: the background.
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: Which nobody at the time, like back when they were
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: making that, nobody. There weren't, well, there had to be
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: a few, but it was such a minimal amount of
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: tech geeks.
- 1:18:17Speaker 5: You still had Martin Scorsese going, this is pretty awesome.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it was like, ooh, I wonder how they did that.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: You know, there were the handful, but I feel like
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: all of those people went into film. Like that was
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: that first several waves.
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: There's still filmmakers that did that. What was it, James
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: Cameron was like, get in, nerd. We're going to go
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: see Evil Dead 2.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's how we're going to do it.
- 1:18:30Speaker 5: Talking to Bill Paxton. Yep. So there's still those guys.
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: I mean, and you look at Evil Dead 2, technically
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: it's awful. But to us, it's one of those grail films.
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: Don't ever remake it. It's gone.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: Well, it is its own remake.
- 1:18:42Speaker 5: You see the garden hose sticking out of the neck
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: with the shooting blood. doesn't matter man to me that
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: movie is a groundbreaker and I've always said.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: That about the special effects too like even going back
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: to those homemade films I'm like as long as you're
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: getting the point across, it's working. Like, as long as you,
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: if you look at the screen and go, I don't
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: know what's going on, you failed. But if you understand
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: what that garden hold is that's spewing out red liquid,
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: I'm like, it worked. You made your scene work. It
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: may not look realistic, but you got your point across,
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: which is what you, as the filmmaker, need to be doing.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: It doesn't matter how good it looks. Granted, you're going
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: to get some snickers, the worst it is. But I'm like,
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: to me, anybody, because I look at those 80s sci-fi,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: Corman-level of like sci-fi stuff that I'm just like oh
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: that all looks terrible realistically but do I love them
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: yeah because I'm like you you took no money and
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: made a sci-fi epic That's impressive. No matter how bad
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: it looks. If you made the story come together, you
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: got the point across. That's a spaceship flying through space.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: I'm like, you made it work. That works. Points to you, man.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: That's an awesome thing that you created, no matter how
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: cheesy it looks.
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: I screened Escape from New York not too long ago,
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: and people were talking about the effects. I was like,
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: you know, that's actually a cardboard box with reflective tape
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: that they filmed. to make it look like it was
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: a computer screen. That's not a real city. That's not
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: like an Atari thing. That's not even that. That's James
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: Cameron sitting there with a reflection.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: That was the original, yeah.
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: And they took a camera over it, and it's a cityscape,
- 1:20:13Speaker 5: so shut the fuck up. I didn't say it like that,
- 1:20:15Speaker 5: because I wanted them to appreciate it. I didn't want
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: to jade them, but then they're like, oh.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: That's different. Even like the titles, like you with your role.
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: But that still happens. Look at like the Carpenter thing.
- 1:20:25Speaker 5: It still happens.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: That thing tearing open was like a sheet. It was
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: like a piece of material tearing open.
- 1:20:32Speaker 5: There's a film being made every week. Yeah. Somebody's still
- 1:20:34Speaker 5: doing that, but you know.
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: And that's, I think what makes those better sometimes is
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: like it makes you creative. I was actually just listening
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: to a dorky audio show about with a filmmaker. And
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: he was just like, I did this weird alternate reality
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: in this scene. And the reason I did it this
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: way is because we had no money to put any
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: effects together. Right. And the guy talking to him was like, well,
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: that was my favorite part. He was like, it makes
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: it its own weird. And I'm like, that's, that's the point.
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: It's like that necessity makes you so creative.
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: It creates the film and makes it.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: A better art.
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: Usually it's late, right?
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: Which one?
- 1:21:11Speaker 5: Harvest Lake. It's a Scott Charmer film. It's low budget.
- 1:21:14Speaker 5: It's pretty much an erotic horror film. In the end,
- 1:21:17Speaker 5: they had no money and they made this huge creature
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: out of bubble gum and latex and semen because it's
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: a sex movie.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: Again, the raft, it's plastic bags in the water. And yet,
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: it scarred children for generations.
- 1:21:29Speaker 5: And he did beat it, sort of. Yeah.
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: Oh wow we've been rambling we have hit many many and.
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: That's well i love halloween by the way as we sat.
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: Down i knew i was like i was like well
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: and that's what all of like this whole month has
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: kind of become that i'm like let's talk about halloween
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: and horror and all of it and see where we go.
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: Yeah and we totally turned these last couple.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: Of episodes i'm like that's what we i.
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: Think you knew what you were doing when you asked
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: me to do this i kind of did okay all
- 1:21:55Speaker 5: right i don't feel so bad now I thought we
- 1:21:57Speaker 5: had a focus, and boy, we went off that. I

- 1:22:35Speaker 1: can keep the death grip on your old VHS tapes,
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: that's fine, but give yourself a chance to experience new,
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: cool stuff.
- 1:22:43Speaker 5: Everyone hates us.
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: Everyone hates us. I don't care. I am true to

- 1:23:21Speaker 3: Things are creeping and crawling all around.
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: Night's coming on and my bony legs are shaking. I
- 1:23:27Speaker 5: can't understand how I got.
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: To turn around. Yeah, I know I better run.
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: I think I better go.
- 1:23:35Speaker 5: My mind's moving fast, but my feet are moving slow.
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: I'm laughing and.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: I'm giving out a breath.

- 1:24:11Speaker 5: Oh, that bird, I didn't see that tree.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: Man, that's smart. Thank goodness I'm getting out of here.
- 1:24:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I know I better run.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: I think I better go.
- 1:24:34Speaker 5: My mind's moving fast, but my feet's moving slow. I
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: hear some laughing and I'm giving.
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: Out of breath.
- 1:24:40Speaker 5: I don't know what it is that's got me.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: Scared half to death. We are two dudes hanging out
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: at the park. I mean, a lot of crazy things happen.
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: Yeah. I just watch people run. There's nothing creepy about that.
