Chapter eleven, fines print of man's foot on the sand. It would have
0:11
made a stoic smile to have seen me and my little family sit down to
0:16
dinner. There was my Majesty, the Prince and Lord of the whole island.
0:23
I had the lives of all my subjects at my absolute command. I
0:28
could hang, draw, give liberty, and take it away, and no
0:33
rebels among all my subjects. Then to see how like a king I dined
0:39
too, all alone, attended by my servants. Paul, as if he
0:46
had been my favorite, was the only person permitted to talk to me.
0:51
My dog, who was now grown old and crazy and had found no species
0:56
to multiply his kind upon, sat always at my right hand, and two
1:03
cats, one on one side of the table and one on the other,
1:07
expecting now and then a bit from my hand as a mark of special favor.
1:14
But these were not the two cats which I brought on shore at first,
1:17
for they were both of them dead, and had been interred near my
1:22
habitation by my own hand. But one of them, having multiplied by I
1:26
know not what kind of creature. There were two which I had preserved tame,
1:33
and whereas the rest ran wild in the woods, and became indeed troublesome
1:37
to me at last, for they would often come into my house and plunder
1:42
me too, till at last I was obliged to shoot them, and did
1:48
kill a great many. At length they left me with this attendance, and
1:55
in this plentiful manner I lived. Neither could I be said to want anything
2:00
but society, and of that some time after this I was likely to have
2:06
too much. I was something impatient, as I have observed, to have
2:12
the use of my boat, though very loath to run any more hazards.
2:16
And therefore sometimes I sat contriving ways to get her about the island, and
2:23
at other times I sat myself down, contented enough without her. But I
2:29
had a strange uneasiness in my mind to go down to the point of the
2:32
island. Where As I have said in my last ramble, I went up
2:37
the hill to see how the shore lay and how the current set, that
2:40
I might see what I had to do. This inclination increased upon me every
2:46
day, and at length I resolved to travel thither by land, following the
2:53
edge of the shore. I did so. But had anyone in England met
2:57
such a man as I was, it might either have frightened him or raised
3:01
a great deal of laughter. And as I frequently stood still to look at
3:06
myself, I could not but smile at the notion of my traveling through Yorkshire
3:12
with such an ecuipage, and in such a dress. Be pleased to take
3:19
a sketch of my figure as follows. I had a great, high,
3:23
shapeless cap made of a goat skin, with a flap hanging down behind,
3:29
as well to keep the sun from me as to shoot the rain off from
3:32
running into my neck, nothing being hurtful in these climates, as the rain
3:38
might be upon the flesh under the clothes. I had a short jacket of
3:45
goat skin, the skirts coming down to about the middle of the thighs,
3:49
and a pair of open knee breeches of the same. The breeches were made
3:54
of the skin of an old he goat, whose hair hung down such a
3:58
length on either side like pantaloons, it reached to the middle of my legs.
4:04
Stockings and shoes I had none, but had made me a pair of
4:09
somethings I scarce know what to call them, like buskins, to flap over
4:14
my legs and lace on either side like spatter dashes, but of a most
4:18
barber shape, as indeed were all the rest of my clothes. I had
4:24
on a broad belt of goat skin dried, which I knew how to draw,
4:30
together with two thongs of the same instead of buckles, and in a
4:34
kind of a frog. On either side of this, instead of a sword
4:39
and dagger, hung a little saw in a hatchet, one on one side
4:44
and one on the other. I had another belt, not so broad,
4:47
and fastened it in the same manner, which hung over my shoulder, and
4:53
at the end of it, under my left arm, hung two pouches,
4:57
both made of goat's skin, two in one of which hung my powder,
5:01
and in the other my shot. At my back I carried my basket,
5:08
and on my shoulder my gun, and over my head a great clumsy,
5:13
ugly goat skin umbrella, but which after all was the most necessary thing I
5:18
had about me next to my gun. As for my face, the color
5:25
of it was really not so mulatto like as one might expect from a man
5:30
not at all careful of it, and living within nine or ten degrees of
5:34
the equinox. My beard I had once suffered to grow till it was about
5:40
a quarter of a yard long, But as I had both scissors and razors
5:45
sufficient, I had cut it pretty short except what grew on my upper lip,
5:50
which I had trimmed into a large pair of Mahometan whiskers, such as
5:57
I had seen worn by some Turks at Sali. For the Moors did not
6:01
wear such though the Turks did. Of these mustachios or whiskers. I will
6:06
not say they were long enough to hang my hat upon them, but they
6:12
were of a length and shape monstrous enough, and such as in England would
6:16
have passed for frightful. But all this is by the bye, for as
6:25
to my figure, I had so few to observe me that it was of
6:29
no manner of consequence. So I say no more of that. In this
6:33
kind of dress, I went my new journey, and was out five or
6:38
six days. I traveled first along the seashore, directly to the place where
6:43
I first brought my boat to an anchor to get upon the rocks. And
6:47
having no boat now to take care of, I went over the land a
6:51
nearer way of the same height that I was upon before. When looking forward
6:58
to the points of the rocks which which lay out, and which I was
7:01
obliged to double with my boat. As is said above, I was surprised
7:06
to see the sea all smooth and quiet, no rippling, no motion,
7:13
no current anymore than in other places. I was at a strange loss to
7:19
understand this, and resolved to spend some time in the observing of it,
7:25
to see if nothing from the sets of the tide had occasioned it. But
7:29
I was presently convinced how it was. That is that the tide of ebbsetting
7:35
from the west and joining with the current of waters from some great river on
7:41
the shore, must be the occasion for this current, and that according as
7:46
the wind blew more forcibly from the west or from the north, this current
7:53
came nearer or went farther from the shore. For waiting thereabouts till evening I
7:59
went up to the rock again, and then the tide of Ebb being made,
8:03
I plainly saw the current again as before, only that it ran farther
8:07
off, being near half a league from the shore, whereas in my case
8:13
it set close upon the shore and hurried me and my canoe along with it,
8:18
which at another time it would not have done. This observation convinced me
8:24
that I had nothing to do but to observe the ebbing and the flowing of
8:28
the tide, and I might very easily bring my boat about the island again.
8:33
But when I began to think of putting it in practice, I had
8:37
such a terror upon my spirits at the remembrance of the danger I had been
8:41
in, that I could not think of it again with any patience. But
8:45
on the contrary, I took up another resolution, which was more safe,
8:50
though more laborious, And this was that I would build, or rather make
8:54
me another periagua or canoe, and so have won for one side of the
9:01
island and one for the other. You are to understand that now I had,
9:07
as I may call it, two plantations in the island. One my
9:11
little fortification or tent, with the wall about it under the rock, with
9:16
the cave behind me, which by this time I had enlarged into several apartments
9:22
or caves, one within another. One of these, which was the driest
9:26
and largest, and had a door out beyond my wall or fortification, that
9:33
is to say, beyond where my wall joined to the rock, was all
9:37
filled up with the large earthen pots of which I have given an account,
9:41
and with fourteen or fifteen great baskets, which would hold five or six bushels
9:48
each. Where I laid up my stores of provisions, especially my corn,
9:52
some in the ear cut off short from the straw, and the other rubbed
9:56
out with my hand. As for my wall, made as before with long
10:03
steaks or piles, these piles grew all like trees, and were by this
10:07
time grown so big and spread so very much, that there was not the
10:11
least appearance to any one's view of any habitation behind them near this dwelling of
10:20
mine. But a little farther within the land, and upon lower ground,
10:24
lay my two pieces of corn land, which I kept duly cultivated and sowed,
10:31
and which duly yielded me their harvest in its season. And whenever I
10:35
had occasion for more corn, I had more land adjoining as fit as that.
10:41
Besides this, I now had my country seat, and I had now
10:46
a tolerable plantation there also. For first, I had my little bower,
10:52
as I called it, which I kept in repair, that is to say,
10:56
I kept the hedge which encircled it constantly fitted up to its usual height,
11:03
the latter always standing on the inside. I kept the trees, which
11:09
at first were no more than steaks, but were now grown very firm and
11:15
tall, always cut so that they might spread and grow thick and wild,
11:20
and make the more agreeable shade, which they did effectually to my mind.
11:26
In the middle of this, I had my tent, always standing, being
11:31
a piece of a sail, spread over poles, set up for that purpose,
11:35
and which never wanted any repair or renewing. And under this I made
11:41
me a squab or couch, with the skins of the creatures I had killed,
11:46
and with other soft things, and a blanket laid on them, such
11:48
as belonged to our sea bedding, which I had saved in a great watchcoat
11:54
to cover me. And here, whenever I had occasion to be absent from
12:00
my chief seat, I took up my country habitation. Adjoining to this,
12:05
I had my enclosures for my cattle, that is to say, my goats,
12:09
and I had taken an inconceivable deal of pains to fence and enclose this
12:15
ground. I was so anxious to see it kept entire lest the goats should
12:20
break through, that I never left off till with infinite labor, I had
12:26
stuck the outside of the hedge so full of small steaks, and so nearer
12:31
one to another, that it was rather a pale than a hedge, and
12:35
there was scarce room to put a hand through between them, which, afterwards,
12:41
when these stakes grew, as they all did in the next rainy season,
12:46
made the enclosure strong like a wall, indeed stronger than any wall.
12:52
This will testify for me that I was not idle, and that I spared
12:56
no pains to bring to pass whatever appeared necessary for my comfortable support. For
13:03
I considered the keeping up a breed of tame creatures. Thus at my end
13:07
would be a living magazine of flesh, milk, butter, and cheese for
13:11
me as long as I lived in the place, if it were to be
13:16
forty years, And that keeping them in my reach depended entirely upon my perfecting
13:22
my enclosures to such a degree that I might be sure of keeping them together,
13:28
which by this method indeed I so effectually secured that when these little steaks
13:33
began to grow, I had planted them so very thick that I was forced
13:39
to pull some of them up again. In this place, also I had
13:43
my grapes growing, which I principally depended on for my winter store of raisins,
13:48
and which I never failed to preserve very carefully as the best and most
13:54
agreeable dainty of my whole diet. And indeed they were not only agreeable,
13:58
but medicinal, wholesome, nourishing and refreshing to the last degree. As this
14:07
was about halfway between my other habitation and the place where I had laid up
14:11
my boat, I generally stayed and lay here in my way thither, for
14:16
I used frequently to visit my boat, and I kept all things about or
14:22
belonging to her, in very good order. Sometimes I went out in her
14:26
to divert myself, but no more hazardous voyages would I go scarcely, ever,
14:31
above a stone's cast or two from the shore. I was so apprehensive
14:37
of being hurried out of my knowledge again by the currents, or winds,
14:41
or any other accident. But now I come to a new scene of my
14:46
life. It happened one day about noon, going towards my boat, I
14:52
was exceedingly surprised with the print of a man's naked foot on the shore,
14:58
which was very plain to be seen in the sand. I stood like one
15:03
thunderstruck, or as if I had seen an apparition. I listened, I
15:11
looked round me, but I could hear nothing nor see anything. I went
15:18
up to a rising ground to look farther. I went up the shore and
15:22
down the shore, but it was all one. I could see no other
15:26
impression but that one. I went to it again to see if there were
15:33
any more, and to observe if it might not be my fancy. But
15:39
there was no room for that, for there was exactly the print of a
15:43
foot toes heel, in every part of a foot. How it came thither
15:50
I knew not, nor could I in the least imagine. But after innumerable
15:56
fluttering thoughts, like a man perfectly confus used and out of myself, I
16:02
came home to my fortification, not feeling, as we say the ground.
16:07
I went on, but terrified to the last degree, looking behind me at
16:14
every two or three steps, mistaking every bush and tree, and fancying every
16:19
stump at a distance to be a man. Nor is it possible to describe
16:26
how many various shapes my affrighted imagination represented things to me, how many wild
16:33
ideas were found every moment in my fancy, and what strange, unaccountable whimsies
16:38
came into my thoughts. By the way, when I came to my castle,
16:44
for so I think I called it. Ever after this I fled into
16:48
it like one pursued. Whether I went over by the latter as first contrived,
16:53
or went in at the hole in the rock which I had called a
16:56
door, I cannot remember no, nor could I remember the next morning,
17:03
for never frightened hair fled to cover or fox to earth with more terror of
17:11
mind than I to this retreat. I slept none that night. The farther
17:18
I was from the occasion of my fright the greater my apprehensions were, which
17:25
is something contrary to the nature of such things, and especially to the usual
17:30
practice of all creatures in fear. But I was so embarrassed with my own
17:36
frightful ideas of the thing that I formed nothing but dismal imaginations to myself,
17:42
even though I was now a great way off. Sometimes I fancied it must
17:48
be the devil, and reason joined in with me in this supposition, For
17:52
how could any other thing in human shape come into the place? Where was
17:59
the vessel that brought them? What marks were there of any other footstep?
18:06
And how was it possible a man should come there? But then to think
18:10
that Satan should take human shape upon him in such a place where there could
18:15
be no manner of occasion for it, but to leave the print of his
18:18
foot behind him, And that even for no purpose, too, for he
18:23
could not be sure I should see it. This was an amusement. The
18:30
other way, I considered that the devil might have found out abundance of other
18:34
ways to have terrified me than this of this single print of a foot,
18:41
that as I lived quite on the other side of the island, he would
18:44
never have been so simple as to leave a mark in a place where it
18:48
was ten thousand to one whether I should ever see it or not, and
18:52
in the sand, too, which the first surge of the sea upon a
18:56
high wind would have defaced entirely. All this seemed inconsistent with the thing itself,
19:03
and with all the notions that we usually entertain of the subtlety of the
19:10
devil. Abundance of such things as these assisted to argue me out of all
19:15
apprehensions of its being the devil. And I presently concluded then that it must
19:21
be some more dangerous creature, that is, that it must be some of
19:25
the savages of the mainland opposite, who had wandered out to sea in their
19:30
canoes, and either driven by the currents or by contrary winds, had made
19:34
the island and had been on shore, but were now gone away to see,
19:41
being as loath perhaps to have stayed in this desolate island as I would
19:45
have been to have had them. While these reflections were rolling in my mind,
19:52
I was very thankful in my thoughts that I was so happy as not
19:55
to be thereabouts at that time, or that they did not see my boat,
20:00
by which they would have concluded that some inhabitants had been in the place
20:06
and perhaps have searched farther from me. Then terrible thoughts racked my imagination about
20:12
their having found out my boat, and that there were people here, and
20:18
that if so, I should certainly have them come again in greater numbers and
20:22
devour me. That if it should happen that they should not find me,
20:27
yet, they would find my enclosure, destroy all my corn, and carry
20:33
away all my flock of tame goats, and I should perish at last for
20:37
mere want. Thus my fear banished all my religious hope, all that former
20:45
confidence in God which was founded upon such wonderful experience as I had had of
20:51
His goodness, As if he that had fed me by miracle, hitherto could
20:56
not preserve by his power the provision which he had made for me by his
21:00
goodness. I reproached myself, with my laziness, that would not sow any
21:07
more corn one year than would just serve me till the next season, as
21:11
if no accident could intervene to prevent my enjoying the crop that was upon the
21:17
ground. And this I thought so just a reproof that I resolved for the
21:22
future to have two or three years corn beforehand, so that whatever might come
21:27
I might not perish for want of bread. A strange, a checker work
21:33
of providence is the life of a man. And by what secret different springs
21:40
are the affections hurried about as different circumstances present. Today we love what tomorrow
21:48
we hate. Today we seek what tomorrow we shun. Today we desire what
21:55
tomorrow we fear, nay even tremble at the apprehensions of This was exemplified in
22:02
me at this time in the most lively manner imaginable, for I, whose
22:07
only affliction was that I seemed banished from human society, that I was alone
22:14
circumscribed by the boundless ocean, cut off from mankind, and condemned to what
22:18
I call silent life, that I was as one whom Heaven thought not worthy
22:26
to be numbered among the living, or to appear among the rest of his
22:30
creatures. That to have seen one of my own species would have seemed to
22:36
me a raising me from death to life, and the greatest blessing that Heaven
22:41
itself, next to the supreme blessing of salvation could bestow. I say that
22:49
I should now tremble at the very apprehensions of seeing a man, and was
22:55
ready to sink into the ground at but the shadow or silent appearance of a
22:59
man having at his foot in the island. Such is the uneven state of
23:06
human life, and it afforded me a great many curious speculations. Afterwards,
23:11
when I had a little recovered my first surprise, I considered that this was
23:18
the station of life. The infinitely wise and good providence of God had determined
23:22
for me. That, as I could not foresee what the ends of divine
23:29
wisdom might be in all this, so I was not to dispute his sovereignty,
23:34
who, as I was his creature, had an undoubted right by creation
23:41
to govern and dispose of me absolutely as he thought fit, and who,
23:47
as I was a creature that had offended him, had likewise a judicial right
23:52
to condemn me to what punishment he thought fit, and that it was my
23:57
part to bear his indignation because I had sinned against him. I then reflected
24:07
that as God, who was not only righteous but omnipotent, had thought fit
24:11
thus to punish and afflict me, so he was able to deliver me,
24:18
that if he did not think fit to do so, it was my unquestioned
24:22
duty to resign myself absolutely and entirely to his will. And on the other
24:29
hand, it was my duty also to hope in him, pray to him,
24:34
and quietly to attend to the dictates and directions of his daily providence.
24:41
These thoughts took up many hours of mine days, nay, I may say
24:48
weeks and months. And one particular effect of my cogitations on this occasion I
24:53
cannot omit. One morning, early, lying in my bed and filled with
24:59
thoughts about my danger from the appearances of savages. I found it discomposed me
25:06
very much, upon which these words of scripture came into my thoughts. Call
25:11
upon me in the day of trouble, and I will deliver Thee, and
25:17
thou shalt glorify me. Upon this, rising cheerfully out of my bed,
25:23
my heart was not only comforted, but I was guided and encouraged to pray
25:29
earnestly to God for deliverance. When I had done praying, I took up
25:34
my Bible, and, opening it to read, the first words that presented
25:41
to me were, wait on the Lord, and be of good cheer,
25:45
and He shall strengthen thy heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord.
25:52
It is impossible to express the comfort this gave me. In answer,
25:56
I thankfully laid down the book and was no more said, at least on
26:02
that occasion. In the middle of these cogitations, apprehensions, and reflections,
26:10
it came into my thoughts one day that all this might be a mere chimera
26:15
of my own, and that this foot might be the print of my own
26:19
foot when I came on shore from my boat. This cheered me up a
26:25
little too, and I began to persuade myself it was all a delusion,
26:30
that it was nothing else but my own foot, and why might I not
26:33
come that way from the boat as well? As I was going that way
26:37
to the boat. Again. I considered also that I could by no means
26:44
tell for certain where I had trod and where I had not, and that
26:49
if at last this was the only print of my own foot, I had
26:56
played the part of those fools who tried to make stories of specters and apparitions,
27:03
and then are frightened at them more than anybody. Now I began to
27:07
take courage and to peep abroad again, for I had not stirred out of
27:11
my castle for three days and nights, so that I began to starve for
27:18
provisions, for I had little or nothing with indoors, but some barley cakes
27:22
and water. Then I knew that my goats wanted to be milked too,
27:26
which usually was my evening diversion, and the poor creatures were in great pain
27:32
and inconvenience for want of it, and indeed it almost spoiled some of them,
27:37
and almost dried up their milk. Encouraging myself. Therefore, with the
27:41
belief that this was nothing but the print of one of my own feet,
27:45
and that I might be truly said to start at my own shadow, I
27:49
began to go abroad again and went to my country house to milk my flock.
27:56
But to see with what fear I went forward how often I looked behind
28:00
me, how I was ready every now and then to lay down my basket
28:03
and run for my life. It would have made anyone have thought I was
28:07
haunted with an evil conscience, or that I had been lately most terribly frightened,
28:14
And so indeed I had. However, I went down thus two or
28:19
three days, and having seen nothing, I began to be a little bolder,
28:25
and to think there was really nothing in it but my own imagination.
28:30
But I could not persuade myself fully of this till I should go down to
28:34
the shore again and see this print of a foot, and measure it by
28:38
my own and see if there was any similitude or fitness, that I might
28:44
be assured that it was my own foot. But when I came to the
28:48
place first, it appeared evidently to me that when I laid up my boat,
28:53
I could not possibly be on shore anywhere thereabouts. Secondly, when I
29:00
came to measure the mark with my own foot, I found my foot not
29:04
so large by a great deal. Both these things filled my head with new
29:10
imaginations, and gave me the vapors again to the highest degree, so that
29:15
I shook with cold like one in an ague, and I went home again,
29:18
filled with the belief that some man or men had been on shore there,
29:25
or in short, that the island was inhabited, and I might be
29:29
surprised before I was aware. And what course to take for my security I
29:33
knew, not, oh, what ridiculous resolutions men take when possessed with fear.
29:42
It deprives them of the use of those means which reason offers for their
29:48
relief. The first thing I proposed to myself was to throw down my enclosures
29:52
and turn all my tame cattle wild into the woods, lest the enemy should
29:57
find them, and then frequent the island in prospect of the same or the
30:03
like booty. Then the simple thing of digging up my two cornfields, lest
30:11
they should find such a grain there, and still be prompted to frequent the
30:15
island. Then to demolish my bower and tent, that they might not see
30:21
any vestiges of habitation, and be prompted to look farther in order to find
30:26
out the person's inhabiting. These were the subject of the first night's cogitations.
30:33
After I was home again, while the apprehensions which had so overrun my mind
30:37
were fresh upon me, and my head was full of vapors. Thus fear
30:44
of danger is ten thousand times more terrifying than danger itself when apparent to the
30:49
eyes. And we find the burden of anxiety greater by much than the evil
30:56
which we are anxious about. And what was worse than all this, I
31:02
had not that relief in this trouble that from the resignation I used to practice
31:07
I hoped to have. I looked. I thought like Saul, who complained
31:11
not only that the Philistines were upon him, but that God had forsaken him.
31:18
For I did not now take due ways to compose my mind by crying
31:22
to God in my distress and resting upon his providence as I had done before
31:29
for my defense and deliverance, which if I had done, I had at
31:34
least been more cheerfully supported under this new surprise, and perhaps carried through it
31:41
with more resolution. This confusion of my thoughts kept me awake all night.
31:48
But in the morning I fell asleep, and, having by the amusement of
31:52
my mind, been as it were, tired and my spirits exhausted, I
31:57
slept very soundly and waked much better composed than I had ever been before.
32:05
And now I began to think sedately, and upon debate with myself, I
32:12
concluded that this island, which was so exceedingly pleasant, fruitful, and no
32:16
farther from the mainland than as I had seen, was not so entirely abandoned,
32:22
as I might imagine. That although there were no stated inhabitants who lived
32:29
on the spot yet, that there might sometimes come boats off from the shore,
32:34
who, either with design or perhaps never, but when they were driven
32:38
by cross winds, might come to this place. That I had lived there
32:44
fifteen years now and not met with the least shadow or figure of any people
32:50
yet, and that if at any time they should be driven here, it
32:54
was probable they went away again as soon as ever they could, seeing that
33:00
they had never thought fit to fix here upon any occasion. That the most
33:07
I could suggest any danger from was from any casual accidental landing of straggling people
33:14
from the main who, as it was likely, if they were driven hither,
33:20
were here against their wills. So they made no stay here, but
33:24
went off again with all possible speed, seldom staying one night on shore lest
33:30
they should not have the help of the tides and daylight back again. And
33:35
that therefore I had nothing to do but to consider of some safe retreat in
33:40
case I should see any savages land upon the spot. Now I began sorely
33:46
to repent that I had dug my cave so large as to bring a door
33:51
through again, which door, as I said, came out beyond where my
33:54
fortification joined to the rock. Upon maturely considering them, therefore, I resolved
34:00
to draw me a second fortification, in the manner of a semicircle, at
34:06
a distance from my wall, just where I had planted a double row of
34:10
trees about twelve years before, of which I made mentioned. These trees,
34:15
having been planted so thick before, they wanted but few piles to be driven
34:21
between them, that they might be thicker and stronger, and my wall would
34:24
be soon finished. So that I now had a double wall, and my
34:30
outer wall was thickened with pieces of timber, old cables and everything I could
34:35
think of to make it strong, having in its seven little holes about as
34:39
big as I might put my arm out at In the inside of this I
34:45
thickened my wall to about ten feet thick, with continually bringing earth out of
34:51
my cave and laying it at the foot of the wall, and walking upon
34:55
it, and through the seven holes I contrived to plant the muskets, of
35:00
which I took notice that I had got seven on shore out of the ship.
35:05
These I planted like my cannon, and I fitted them into frames that
35:10
held them like a carriage, so that I could fire all the seven guns
35:15
in two minutes time. This wall I was many a weary month in finishing,
35:21
and yet never thought myself safe till it was done. When this was
35:28
done, I stuck all the ground without my wall, for a great length
35:30
everyway as full with steaks or sticks of the ossier like wood which I had
35:37
found so apt to grow, as they could well stand, insomuch that I
35:42
believe I might set in near twenty thousand of them, leaving a pretty large
35:47
space between them and my wall, that I might have room to see my
35:52
enemy, and they might have no shelter from the young trees if they attempted
35:57
to approach my outer wall. Thus, in two years time I had a
36:02
thick grove, and in five or six years time I had a wood before
36:07
my dwelling, growing so monstrously thick and strong that it was indeed perfectly impassable,
36:14
and no men of what kindsoever could ever imagine that there was anything beyond
36:20
it, much less a habitation. As for the way which I proposed to
36:25
myself to go in and out, for I left no avenue, it was
36:30
by setting two ladders, one to a part of the rock which was low,
36:36
and then broke in, and left room to place another ladder upon that,
36:40
so that when the two ladders were taken down, no man living could
36:45
come down to me without doing himself mischief. And if they had come down,
36:52
they were still on the outside of my outer wall. Thus I took
36:58
all the measures human prudence could suggest for my own preservation, and it will
37:04
be seen at length that they were not altogether without just reason, though I
37:10
foresaw nothing at that time more than my mere fear suggested to me. End
37:22
of Chapter eleven.
