- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. Lapress is reporting that a new agreement
- 0:04Speaker 1: on Churchill Falls has been reached between this province and Quebec.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Richard Duggan reports.
- 0:11Speaker 2: The Quebec media outlet broke the news last night. It
- 0:14Speaker 2: says production capacity of the new hydroelectric facilities in Labrador
- 0:18Speaker 2: will be greater, which means both provinces can obtain more
- 0:20Speaker 2: energy than what was initially agreed upon in an MoU
- 0:23Speaker 2: reached in December of twenty twenty four. That increase made
- 0:26Speaker 2: the agreement possible, according to Lapress. Otherwise it remains largely
- 0:30Speaker 2: the same. The publication cites a source indicating that the
- 0:33Speaker 2: new agreement will also breathe new life into the so
- 0:36Speaker 2: called Atlantic Loop project, which would essentially connect the Atlantic
- 0:40Speaker 2: provinces to the Quebec grid. Lapress says the federal government
- 0:43Speaker 2: played a facilitating role in the deal and offered financial
- 0:46Speaker 2: incentives to Newfoundland and Labrador, including the possibility of extending
- 0:49Speaker 2: the Clean Energy Investment Tax Credit, which has a fifteen
- 0:52Speaker 2: percent refundable tax credit to be used to finance major
- 0:55Speaker 2: energy projects. A formal announcement on the deal is expected
- 0:58Speaker 2: to take place next week.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Charges laid against a seventeen year old boy for making
- 1:04Speaker 1: possessing and distributing child sexual abuse and exploitation material by
- 1:09Speaker 1: altering pictures using AI is a stark reminder of the
- 1:13Speaker 1: seriousness of the crime. RNC is emphasizing the importance of
- 1:18Speaker 1: getting the word out and making sure that young people
- 1:21Speaker 1: in particular know the consequences of altering and sharing images
- 1:25Speaker 1: of a sexual nature. Constable Steph Meyers says the Constabulary
- 1:29Speaker 1: has been working with Thriving getting out to schools and
- 1:32Speaker 1: spreading the word about the consequences involved. She says it's
- 1:36Speaker 1: also important for parents to speak with children and teens
- 1:39Speaker 1: about the responsible use of technology and social media.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Certainly, while parents and characters to have conversations at home
- 1:46Speaker 3: with these in their lives about responsible technology use, you know,
- 1:50Speaker 3: the subject of consents and then the consequences of online behavior.
- 1:54Speaker 3: This isn't to get mad at youth or to punish them.
- 1:57Speaker 3: It's to ensure that they feel comfortable having those conversations,
- 2:00Speaker 3: they're comfortable coming forward and reporting, and also to recognize
- 2:04Speaker 3: if they are a victim of a crime through ALINE
- 2:08Speaker 3: and social media. So we want to make sure that
- 2:10Speaker 3: they know how to report, where to report, and who
- 2:13Speaker 3: to speak to if they should find themselves in a
- 2:15Speaker 3: similar situation.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Officers with the Canada Border Services Agency at Saint John's
- 2:20Speaker 1: International Airport recently sees more than twenty six kilograms of
- 2:25Speaker 1: an illegal stimulant from a flight that arrived from London, England.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Kat or Bushman's tea is a type of plant native
- 2:32Speaker 1: to Africa and is usually chewed to get its desired
- 2:35Speaker 1: stimulant effects. It's considered a controlled substance in many countries,
- 2:40Speaker 1: including Canada. The CBSA says one hundred and thirty six
- 2:44Speaker 1: bundles of the illegal stimulant was discovered in two check
- 2:48Speaker 1: bags belonging to a passenger. The traveler was denied entry
- 2:52Speaker 1: into Canada and the sea's goods were transferred to the
- 2:55Speaker 1: RCMP's Atlantic Serious and Organized Crime Division. Some eight hundred
- 3:00Speaker 1: and twenty five pounds of cod and fish processing and
- 3:04Speaker 1: packaging equipment was seized by DFO as part of an
- 3:07Speaker 1: investigation into the illegal sale of fish caught in the
- 3:11Speaker 1: recreational food fishery. Officers from the Bay Roberts DFO Detachment
- 3:16Speaker 1: searched a home and business in the Trinity Bay area
- 3:19Speaker 1: on July thirtieth as part of the investigation. DFO says
- 3:23Speaker 1: it is illegal for fish caught in the recreational fishery
- 3:26Speaker 1: to be sold, traded, or bartered, and any sale of fish,
- 3:30Speaker 1: including process fish and fish products outside the licensed commercial
- 3:35Speaker 1: fishery is illegal. No further information is being made available
- 3:39Speaker 1: at this time as the investigation continues. Snoopers beware. The
- 3:45Speaker 1: Privacy Commissioner is recommending that the name of a person
- 3:49Speaker 1: doing the prying be released to the person they've been
- 3:52Speaker 1: snooping on. Linda Swain reports.
- 3:54Speaker 4: The recommendation comes after someone notified NLHS of a privacy breach.
- 3:59Speaker 4: It turned out that curiosity got the better of an
- 4:02Speaker 4: employee who accessed the private health information of a patient.
- 4:05Speaker 4: The Privacy Commissioner says NLHS took the appropriate action, but
- 4:09Speaker 4: she recommends going a step further and releasing the name
- 4:12Speaker 4: of the snooper to the person affected. Her argument is
- 4:15Speaker 4: that the person involved knows the full impacts of the
- 4:17Speaker 4: privacy breach and they should know the identity of the snooper.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Carrie Hatfield recommends that NLHS released the snooper's name and
- 4:25Speaker 4: the discipline they receive to the person affected, and that
- 4:28Speaker 4: the health authority consider implementing a policy to inform affected
- 4:32Speaker 4: people of the names of those who intentionally and wrongly
- 4:35Speaker 4: access their personal health information.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Atlantic Lottery is waiting for the province's latest millionaire to
- 4:42Speaker 1: come forward. Some lucky person who purchased a ticket in
- 4:46Speaker 1: last night's Lotto six forty nine draw won one million
- 4:49Speaker 1: dollars on the gold Ball Guaranteed prize draw. More details
- 4:53Speaker 1: will be shared once the winner presents the tickets. That's
- 4:57Speaker 1: your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
