Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:29Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after Party.
- 0:31Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:33Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to gave from one full episode
- 0:35Speaker 1: of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig into
- 0:38Speaker 1: the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth and to
- 0:41Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:44Speaker 1: we reveal the murder from Allman Brothers band history that
- 0:47Speaker 1: didn't make it into this week's full episode. Plus your
- 0:50Speaker 1: take on the greatest Southern bands of all time, a
- 0:53Speaker 1: conversation on the greatest brother bands of all time, in
- 0:56Speaker 1: a preview of next week's new episode on Alice Bag,
- 1:00Speaker 1: front woman for LA Punk band The Bags Were Bags,
- 1:03Speaker 1: excuse me, and protector of an LA punk scene that
- 1:07Speaker 1: was being threatened by serial killers. Plus we get into
- 1:10Speaker 1: your emails, comments, dms, and as always a whole lot
- 1:13Speaker 1: of Rosie. This is the podcast for the musically obsessed,
- 1:15Speaker 1: the outsiders, the Independent thinkers who know that the best
- 1:18Speaker 1: history is the history that gets buried. Disgraceland is where
- 1:21Speaker 1: I tell the stories they didn't want told, the kind
- 1:23Speaker 1: you'll end up telling someone else. All right, just goes,
- 1:26Speaker 1: let's get into it. Touring in a band will literally
- 1:41Speaker 1: drive you crazy. Allman Brothers band attorney John Condon Junior
- 1:45Speaker 1: prove that in a court of law in nineteen seventy. Now,
- 1:48Speaker 1: I've toured in bands, and a lot of you have
- 1:50Speaker 1: as well, And most of you know people who have toured,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and you heard the stories. The road is tough. The
- 1:57Speaker 1: road won't just kill you, it will, like the man's said,
- 2:00Speaker 1: drive you crazy. Even the most successful artists get driven
- 2:04Speaker 1: into a state of isolation on the road. Even the
- 2:07Speaker 1: most disciplined are tempted. The healthiest succumb to unhealthy habits.
- 2:12Speaker 1: You know it's out. They're drug sex, bad food, and
- 2:15Speaker 1: a lack of suitable toilet options. It's enough to make
- 2:18Speaker 1: a rambled the man take up a straight job, I
- 2:20Speaker 1: tell you. But back in nineteen seventy, the Allman Brothers band,
- 2:25Speaker 1: like many before them and many after, they wanted their
- 2:28Speaker 1: slice of the rock and roll pie. And they weren't
- 2:30Speaker 1: going to be denied. So they were touring in a
- 2:34Speaker 1: shitty little Winnebago across the Midwest, and when they made
- 2:37Speaker 1: their way to New York they were well frazzled. The
- 2:41Speaker 1: bands that itinerary had them in Chicago one night, Long
- 2:43Speaker 1: Island the next, and then high tailing it west and
- 2:45Speaker 1: north again to play in Buffalo the next night. When
- 2:49Speaker 1: they got there, they went on late. In Buffalo. When
- 2:53Speaker 1: they did go on, they did burn the house down.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Not literally, the literal violence would come later that evening
- 2:58Speaker 1: when the band attempted to get paid by the promoter.
- 3:00Speaker 1: The promoter, a guy by the name of Angelo Aliota,
- 3:04Speaker 1: told Alman Brothers bassist Barry Oakley that the thousand dollars
- 3:09Speaker 1: guarantee that the band is supposed to get paid that
- 3:11Speaker 1: night was not going to happen, he said. The promoter
- 3:15Speaker 1: said that the band went on late, so he was
- 3:17Speaker 1: only going to pay them five hundred bucks. Now, Oakley,
- 3:21Speaker 1: the bass player, relayed this message to the Alman Brothers
- 3:25Speaker 1: road manager, a dude by the name of Twiggs Lyndon Junior.
- 3:30Speaker 1: You know the scrawny little road manager from almost famous,
- 3:32Speaker 1: the dude with the long hair, leather vest and cowboy hat.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Put some christ on, a cross muscle tone on that dude,
- 3:39Speaker 1: give him a Sam Elliott mustache and spram with an
- 3:42Speaker 1: air of I don't give a fuck, and you'll have
- 3:44Speaker 1: a picture of Twiggs. Lindon Junior, the Almonds road manager.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Twiggs was, in a word, badass, a nineteen seventies road
- 3:53Speaker 1: managing badass. Twiggs had come up looking after other Georgia
- 3:58Speaker 1: artists like Otis Redding and Little Richard, and they'll make
- 4:01Speaker 1: them crazier than Little Richard on or off the road. Okay, Now,
- 4:04Speaker 1: maybe all those one nighters that the Almonds were up to,
- 4:07Speaker 1: maybe they'd caught up to Twigs on that very night.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Or maybe he was just bloodthirsty, maybe he just needed
- 4:13Speaker 1: to blow off some steam. When the bass player Oakley,
- 4:17Speaker 1: told Twiggs that the promoter Aliota was stiffing them on
- 4:21Speaker 1: half their pay, Twigs confronted Aliota, and Aliota told Twigs
- 4:26Speaker 1: to go fuck himself. Twiggs pulled out the ten inch
- 4:29Speaker 1: fishing knife that he kept sheathed on his hip, and
- 4:33Speaker 1: Aliota rushed at him. The two then fell grappling to
- 4:36Speaker 1: the floor. They were on the club, rolling around, and
- 4:39Speaker 1: only one of them got up. Almand Brothers band Twiggs
- 4:42Speaker 1: Lyndon Junior. He's the one who got up Angelo Aliota,
- 4:46Speaker 1: the promoter. He remained bleeding on the floor. He was
- 4:49Speaker 1: stabbed by Twigs. Twigs sat on a barstool. Fuck him,
- 4:54Speaker 1: was what he was reported to have said, and he
- 4:56Speaker 1: watched Aliota then bleed out. He then said, let them
- 4:59Speaker 1: give me the electric chair. I needed to make my point.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I'm paraphrasing, but that's what's reported he had said. Within
- 5:09Speaker 1: an hour, the promoter was dead. Twigs didn't resist arrest
- 5:15Speaker 1: all my brothers. Attorney John Condon Jr. Gambled. When this
- 5:18Speaker 1: went to court, the attorney for Twiggs opted for a
- 5:22Speaker 1: bench trial, meaning that there would be no jury, that
- 5:25Speaker 1: the judge alone would decide his client's fate. I don't
- 5:30Speaker 1: even know this is possible, but it turns out it is,
- 5:32Speaker 1: or it was so the attorney then condon. This guy Condon.
- 5:37Speaker 1: He pleaded temporary insanity for Twiggs Lyndon Jr. He said
- 5:42Speaker 1: that the road manager was made crazy by the road
- 5:46Speaker 1: and that's why he killed that dude. Look at this
- 5:50Speaker 1: group of long hair, drug addicted freaks. My client has
- 5:52Speaker 1: to look after your honor. You'd go crazy too, Like literally,
- 5:55Speaker 1: this is this is the argument he didn't say. This
- 6:00Speaker 1: is exactly what he did argue a version of this.
- 6:03Speaker 1: He even brought in Almonds bassist. I have a hard
- 6:06Speaker 1: time saying Almonds Almonds bassist, very Oakly, the guy we
- 6:11Speaker 1: were talking about earlier. He brought him up on the
- 6:13Speaker 1: stand to discuss his dope habit. Okay. The lawyer also
- 6:18Speaker 1: produced a list of age of consent for minors in
- 6:21Speaker 1: each state. It's nineteen seventy year, honor. The age of
- 6:25Speaker 1: consent in some states is only fourteen years old. How
- 6:29Speaker 1: am I going to keep these guys sane? Are you're
- 6:32Speaker 1: fucking kidding me? This happened like literally arguing that the
- 6:39Speaker 1: age of consent is less than eighteen in some of
- 6:42Speaker 1: these states that they're traveling in. So the thirty seven
- 6:45Speaker 1: year old road manager is driven crazy. I mean that
- 6:50Speaker 1: that's crazy enough. But the crazier thing here, guys, is
- 6:52Speaker 1: it worked. Okay. The judge ruled that Almond Brothers road
- 6:56Speaker 1: manager John Condon Junior was temporarily insane when he killed
- 7:01Speaker 1: Angelo Aliota Twiggs. Lyndon Junior was not guilty by reason
- 7:06Speaker 1: of temporary insanity, thus proving that touring in a rock
- 7:11Speaker 1: and roll band can literally make you crazy. Twigs did
- 7:15Speaker 1: six months in a psych ward as his punishment, and
- 7:18Speaker 1: then he got out and he once again hit the
- 7:19Speaker 1: road with the Almond Brothers. He died in nineteen seventy
- 7:22Speaker 1: nine in a skydiving accident when his shoot failed to open.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Maybe Twigs was crazy after all, because only crazy motherfucker's skydive.
- 7:30Speaker 1: This story was not in this week's episode on the
- 7:33Speaker 1: Almond Brothers band, but I wanted to share it with
- 7:34Speaker 1: you guys, because it's, well, you guessed it crazy, all right?
- 7:39Speaker 1: Speaking of crazy, why are bands with brothers in them
- 7:44Speaker 1: the craziest Oasis? Black Crows, Almond Brothers, Zeth and I
- 7:49Speaker 1: are diving into the antics and craziness from brother bands
- 7:52Speaker 1: and the great music that these brother bands have made
- 7:54Speaker 1: throughout music history. Coming up in the exclusive section of
- 7:57Speaker 1: this podcast, got to talk about my ever bros guitar
- 8:01Speaker 1: all right. Go to Disgray sampod dot com to sign
- 8:04Speaker 1: up to get exclusive content like this plus ad free
- 8:07Speaker 1: listening in your feed. Right now, guys, we have our
- 8:10Speaker 1: Almond Brother's band episode that I've been talking about. The
- 8:12Speaker 1: story deals with more than just Dwayne Almon's incredible guitar
- 8:16Speaker 1: playing also gets into the Dixie gangs the band crossed
- 8:20Speaker 1: and had to survive, but it also delves into the
- 8:22Speaker 1: efforts that the band made in getting a peanut farmer
- 8:25Speaker 1: elected president. Here's what I mean. In nineteen seventy five,
- 8:30Speaker 1: an Almond Brothers band concert helped elect the next president
- 8:33Speaker 1: of the United States. Greg Almon couldn't believe that this
- 8:37Speaker 1: dude in jeans and T shirt, sipping scotch and listening
- 8:40Speaker 1: to blues records was actually the governor of his state.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And Greg Almon almost spit out his drink when that man,
- 8:46Speaker 1: Jimmy Carter, told him that he was running for president. Now,
- 8:50Speaker 1: Greg knew that the idea that was crazy, but he
- 8:52Speaker 1: told Carter he'd do anything he could to help his campaign.
- 8:55Speaker 1: By late nineteen seventy five, Jimmy Carter's campaign was in trouble.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Carter was runrunning out of money ahead of the must
- 9:01Speaker 1: win Iowa primary. At that same time, the Almond Brothers
- 9:05Speaker 1: were falling apart after the death of two of its
- 9:08Speaker 1: members and news of the band's hard drug fueled living
- 9:11Speaker 1: in the press. But Jimmy Carter did not turn his
- 9:14Speaker 1: back on the Almond Brothers. He turned to the Almand Brothers.
- 9:18Speaker 1: He told people that if they didn't think an Almand
- 9:20Speaker 1: Brothers fans should be president, then they should vote for
- 9:22Speaker 1: somebody else. The Almonds then agreed to host a benefit
- 9:26Speaker 1: concert for the Carter campaign ahead of the Iowa primary.
- 9:29Speaker 1: The concert turned Almonds fans young voters into Jimmy Carter fans,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and created a cash windfall for the campaign. Carter was
- 9:37Speaker 1: then able to flood the airwaves with ads and squeak
- 9:40Speaker 1: into a first place finish in Iowa, a primary win
- 9:43Speaker 1: that sparked Jimmy Carter's successful run for president, America's first
- 9:49Speaker 1: rock and roll president. All Right, I love that story,
- 9:53Speaker 1: regardless of your politics. Who gives a shit rock and
- 9:58Speaker 1: roll helping a dude get elected to president in the
- 10:00Speaker 1: nineteen seventies. It's totally different story.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Now.
- 10:02Speaker 1: We've obviously come a long way in society and cultural norms,
- 10:06Speaker 1: but back then that was a big fucking deal. And
- 10:09Speaker 1: I like how, you know, say we look again, I
- 10:11Speaker 1: don't care what anybody's politics are. I like how Carter
- 10:14Speaker 1: was like, you know what, I like all Myond Brothers fans.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You got to understand how fucking conservative it was still
- 10:19Speaker 1: back in the nineteen seventies and for you know, the
- 10:22Speaker 1: guy running for president to put his balls on the
- 10:25Speaker 1: line about his musical taste. I think that's fucking awesome
- 10:28Speaker 1: when anybody does that. I love that, all right. So
- 10:30Speaker 1: let's see Allman Brothers in this week's full episode. Coming
- 10:33Speaker 1: up right after this bonus episode, our rewind episode on
- 10:36Speaker 1: r Kelly, and then next week our new episode on
- 10:39Speaker 1: Alice Bag from the Bags. Shit, man, I'm just realizing
- 10:43Speaker 1: it's not the bags. It's bags. I've been calling her.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I've been calling it the bags for way too long.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Forgive me, Alice. When you're listening to the Alice Bag episode,
- 10:53Speaker 1: be thinking about underground music scenes. Okay, there have been
- 10:58Speaker 1: some incredible underground music scenes throughout the history of rock
- 11:01Speaker 1: and roll. This is almost too broad of a question,
- 11:04Speaker 1: but the LA punk scene in the eighties one of
- 11:07Speaker 1: the most influential music scenes of all time, and there
- 11:11Speaker 1: have been some incredible ones, and the La one at
- 11:13Speaker 1: that time was was very underground. Okay, we want to
- 11:16Speaker 1: know about some of the bands that were essential to
- 11:20Speaker 1: a scene. Okay, now, this might be some scene only
- 11:23Speaker 1: you're familiar with a band. You you know, it's like
- 11:25Speaker 1: you think of the Berkeley you know, Berkeley, California. If
- 11:30Speaker 1: you think of that scene, right, Green Day and Rancid
- 11:32Speaker 1: came out of that scene, they wouldn't have come out
- 11:35Speaker 1: of that scene without a band that not many people
- 11:37Speaker 1: know about called Operation Ivy. All right, that's what I
- 11:41Speaker 1: mean by essential. Okay, the DC scene, the Washington, d C.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Hardcore scene. Okay, everyone knows Minor Threat, everybody knows Fugazi, everybody,
- 11:51Speaker 1: you know what I mean. But what about what about
- 11:54Speaker 1: rights of spring? Okay, that's what I'm talking about. The
- 11:57Speaker 1: essential bands that we may have overl looked, looked from
- 12:01Speaker 1: from some of the most influential underground scenes. Doesn't have
- 12:04Speaker 1: to be punk. Rock can be, blues, can be jazz.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I was reading about this this jazz flutis the other
- 12:09Speaker 1: day that I'd never heard of before. It is the
- 12:11Speaker 1: first flute solo in modern music that wasn't classical. That
- 12:15Speaker 1: type of thing. Hit me up six one seven nine
- 12:17Speaker 1: oh six six six three eight. Essential bands from underground music.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Let us know who you got, who you're listening to.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Leave me a voicemail six one seven nine oh six
- 12:27Speaker 1: six six three eight, Send me a text six one
- 12:29Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight. Email me
- 12:32Speaker 1: Disgrace Sampod at gmail dot com. Hit us up on
- 12:34Speaker 1: the socials at Disgrace Lampod, and you might hear your
- 12:37Speaker 1: answer on next week's after party. I said, I got
- 12:40Speaker 1: to take a quick break. Be back right after this
- 12:42Speaker 1: with your voicemails, text, dms and more. All right, guys,
- 12:58Speaker 1: you want to be a rock and roll star, then listen.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Now I'll hear what you say, not what I say.
- 13:02Speaker 1: What you say, I'm in the phone booth. I'm not
- 13:04Speaker 1: going to repeat it. You know how it goes. You
- 13:06Speaker 1: know where it is. It's across the hall. The numbers
- 13:08Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Last week's question of the week relative to our Disgrace
- 13:13Speaker 1: Slad episode on The Alman Brothers was who is your
- 13:17Speaker 1: favorite Southern rock band? Hey, let's go to Patty in
- 13:22Speaker 1: the nine to seven.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Oh, Jake, it's Patty in the nine seven oh residing
- 13:28Speaker 2: in the three h three, aspiring the four one five.
- 13:32Speaker 2: I wanted to bring up a specific Southern rock band,
- 13:37Speaker 2: the Aquarium Rescue Units with some pretty heavy players for sure.
- 13:42Speaker 2: I mean, you've got Jeff's Sipe apartment to two fifty eight,
- 13:47Speaker 2: one of the greatest, if not the greatest drummer name
- 13:49Speaker 2: of all time. Do you have, of course, Jimmy Herring
- 13:52Speaker 2: later of Weds Britannic. I hope he's getting better. And
- 13:57Speaker 2: we have o'tell the man from Egypt to Otil Burbridge,
- 14:01Speaker 2: probably the greatest story of ever meeting a musician in
- 14:04Speaker 2: my life. I'll save that for another day. And of
- 14:07Speaker 2: course the ultimate Colonel Bruce Hampkin. Thanks all the disc
- 14:12Speaker 2: goes up there for supporting this guy, and thank you
- 14:15Speaker 2: Jake for giving us some amazing programming over the years.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Keep going, keep crushing it.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And roll it all right, Patty, listen. I want to
- 14:24Speaker 1: hear that story, man, I want to. I want you
- 14:26Speaker 1: to call back, and I want you to tell me
- 14:28Speaker 1: that story. I also would like I would. I would
- 14:31Speaker 1: prefer if you can, if you can. I know you're busy,
- 14:34Speaker 1: I get it, but you know you've mentioned these these bands.
- 14:37Speaker 1: I don't know who the fuck you're talking about here, man,
- 14:40Speaker 1: and that's because I have a gaping hole in my
- 14:44Speaker 1: understanding of music. I don't know that I've even ever
- 14:47Speaker 1: heard a widespread panic song. When I hear when somebody
- 14:50Speaker 1: mentions widespread panic, you know what I think of I
- 14:52Speaker 1: think of Eastbound and Down. I think it's the pilot
- 14:55Speaker 1: episode when Kenny goes back home and he's doing blow
- 14:59Speaker 1: with is buddy Clem in the in the back of
- 15:01Speaker 1: the bar, and uh, I think there's snorting lines off
- 15:04Speaker 1: of Burned Widespread Panic CD and Kenny's like he doesn't
- 15:08Speaker 1: know the band, and Clem's like, I'll get I'll make
- 15:11Speaker 1: you a mix, man, I'll just get you the choice snugs.
- 15:13Speaker 1: One of the funniest scenes I've ever seen in any
- 15:15Speaker 1: television show ever. And I don't think they're dising widespread panic.
- 15:20Speaker 1: I think they're actually, you know, into widespread panic. But
- 15:23Speaker 1: I've never heard widespread panic. So for me to fully
- 15:25Speaker 1: appreciate the Aquarium Rescue Unit, I gotta I gotta, I
- 15:30Speaker 1: gotta know where this all goes too, or come or
- 15:32Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So hit me up and
- 15:34Speaker 1: just tell you one song, Patty, one song to start with.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Give me a widespread panic song, one of those, and
- 15:40Speaker 1: then give me one more, actually two songs the Aquarium
- 15:43Speaker 1: Rescue Unit. Just give me a starting point. Okay, all right,
- 15:46Speaker 1: appreciate you all. Let's check out John and the eight
- 15:49Speaker 1: oh five.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Hi, Jake really like to enjoy the podcast. It's great stuff.
- 15:55Speaker 2: And this is John from the eight oh five the
- 15:57Speaker 2: Central Coast to California. Anyways, my favorite sound in a
- 16:01Speaker 2: rock band. I was never really big and the Almond
- 16:03Speaker 2: Brothers or definitely not like a Skinner, although it's in
- 16:07Speaker 2: my age group. But I really liked the popish side,
- 16:12Speaker 2: which is thirty eight Special and currently the newest one.
- 16:16Speaker 2: I go crazy with Yesty Trucks. That's so good stuff.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Seeing them a couple of times live, They're great and
- 16:23Speaker 2: I still want to know what year is the mellotron
- 16:26Speaker 2: you're playing? All right, Thanks Jake, keep it up, great stuff.
- 16:30Speaker 1: John, what's up, my man? I gotta say our tastes
- 16:33Speaker 1: are pretty aligned on this. I like the poppier stuff too.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I did not grow up an Almond Brothers fan or
- 16:39Speaker 1: even you know. I had a brief Linyard Skinner moment
- 16:42Speaker 1: when I was really young and getting into guitar, but
- 16:44Speaker 1: it was fleeting, and whenever I hear thirty eight Special, man,
- 16:48Speaker 1: I am fucking reaching for that volume. Knob. I've had
- 16:51Speaker 1: the pleasure of seeing Tedesky Trucks live and having my
- 16:55Speaker 1: face melted and good stuff. Appreciate the call, John, appreciate it.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Nine oh seven rights in on this subject, Hey, Jake.
- 17:02Speaker 1: The southern rock band that popped into my mind first
- 17:05Speaker 1: was thirty eight special. Well there you go, another thirty
- 17:07Speaker 1: eight special. My friends and I spent many a night
- 17:09Speaker 1: at the roller skating rink listening to their tunes as
- 17:11Speaker 1: we circled the floor, and as I transitioned into early adulthood,
- 17:14Speaker 1: my allegiance transferred to the Black Crows, especially Shake Your
- 17:17Speaker 1: Money Maker, and for a modern take on the sound,
- 17:19Speaker 1: you might want to check out BlackBerry Smoke. A colleague
- 17:22Speaker 1: at work has their tunes playing in his classroom before
- 17:25Speaker 1: and after school, as well as any time students are
- 17:27Speaker 1: not in his room. Lisa from the nine oh seven Lisa,
- 17:31Speaker 1: I think we got a rock and roll high school teacher. Lisa?
- 17:34Speaker 1: Is that what you are? I like it? Dig it
- 17:37Speaker 1: eight one six rights in, Hey, Black Crows Southern rock,
- 17:42Speaker 1: and they're my favorite and it's not even close. I
- 17:44Speaker 1: love those guys. The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion is
- 17:47Speaker 1: an all time great album. It really is. It's really great.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Speaking of Southern bands, Frank Beard from Ziezi Top died yesterday.
- 17:58Speaker 1: I got news of that. Rest in peace, mister Beard,
- 18:03Speaker 1: Pma to your family. You know, Zzy Top obviously an
- 18:08Speaker 1: incredible band. People are gonna say a lot of great
- 18:11Speaker 1: things about the band and about Frank Beard. You know,
- 18:17Speaker 1: it's funny. They're from Texas, obviously, and I don't think
- 18:19Speaker 1: of Texas bands as Southern bands. I think of them
- 18:22Speaker 1: as Texas bands. Like Texas has its own thing, and
- 18:27Speaker 1: that is in part because of Frank Beard and Zazy Top.
- 18:32Speaker 1: They've defined their own complete niche inside of a niche
- 18:37Speaker 1: I don't even know. Niche is the wrong word for
- 18:40Speaker 1: anything from Texas, because Texas is just big and figuratively
- 18:44Speaker 1: am literally, There's just something about Texas that makes it
- 18:47Speaker 1: fucking Texas and rest in peace. Frank Beard, one of
- 18:51Speaker 1: the great drummers from one of the greatest rock and
- 18:53Speaker 1: roll bands of all times, Easy Top seven to to
- 18:56Speaker 1: oh Rima, writes in Rima from Joshua Tree Southern rock bands,
- 18:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna stretch to the classic definition with a few
- 19:02Speaker 1: of these, but here's my short list. Rema Arizona is
- 19:06Speaker 1: not the South, It's the Southwest. She does mention flat
- 19:12Speaker 1: duo jets. I'll accept that. Steve Earl ah Tennessee, So yeah,
- 19:20Speaker 1: Tony Joe White, Yeah, definitely Southern. We send to Williams yep, yeah,
- 19:25Speaker 1: the Meters okay, all right, The Oblivions I don't know
- 19:29Speaker 1: enough about, nor do I know enough about the Grifters. Uhrima,
- 19:33Speaker 1: right back. Let me know about the Grifters and the Oblivions.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Thank you appreciate the text six one seven nine oh
- 19:38Speaker 1: six six six three eight. Guys, hit me up voicemail
- 19:41Speaker 1: and text for next week's after party, right, hit me up.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Let me know what are the seminal bands from the
- 19:48Speaker 1: different underground scenes throughout music history that we need to
- 19:51Speaker 1: know about. Okay, someone just called reference in here. Text
- 19:55Speaker 1: two five zero doesn't leave her name from Vancouver, refers
- 20:00Speaker 1: to herself as a Vancouver right, and says she wants
- 20:03Speaker 1: to hear us dive in on the slits. This is
- 20:05Speaker 1: kind of what I'm talking about. The Slits. Give us
- 20:07Speaker 1: the seminal bands from underground scenes that we should know about.
- 20:10Speaker 1: All right, let's get that conversation going. Six months seven
- 20:12Speaker 1: nine o six six sixty three eight voicemail and text.
- 20:15Speaker 1: All right, So back to the subject of the Almand Brothers,
- 20:17Speaker 1: one of the most famous guitar solos in rock history.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Exists because a black soul singer and a white hippie
- 20:22Speaker 1: guitar player were not allowed to eat lunch together. In
- 20:26Speaker 1: nineteen sixty eight, Dwayne Allman was recording as a session
- 20:30Speaker 1: guitarist at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with the
- 20:33Speaker 1: legendary R and B artist Wilson Pickett, But when lunchtime came,
- 20:37Speaker 1: Alman and Pickett were told to hang back at the
- 20:39Speaker 1: studio because the diner that the rest of the band
- 20:42Speaker 1: was heading to was still segregated. Now not only were
- 20:45Speaker 1: blacks not allowed, but long haired hippie guitar players were
- 20:48Speaker 1: frowned upon as well. Allman in Pickett used their time
- 20:52Speaker 1: alone in the studio when they weren't at lunch to
- 20:54Speaker 1: record the beatles Hey Jude. Dwayne Almond nailed the tune
- 20:58Speaker 1: in one take, and Eric Clapton heard Dwayne Almonds playing
- 21:02Speaker 1: on Wilson pickets Hey Jude. Eric Clapton enlisted Dwayne Almond
- 21:06Speaker 1: to join his new band, Derek and the Dominoes. The
- 21:09Speaker 1: band's one and only album features the legendary track Layla,
- 21:12Speaker 1: which features Dwayne Almon in one of the greatest and
- 21:15Speaker 1: most recognizable guitar solos of all time, A solo that
- 21:19Speaker 1: wouldn't have happened had Dwayne Almond and Wilson Pickett not
- 21:23Speaker 1: been forced to miss out on lunch that afternoon. Thought
- 21:26Speaker 1: you guys to dig that little piece of music history.
- 21:28Speaker 1: We'll be right back after this. All right, welcome back.
- 21:43Speaker 1: As we've been talking about Southern rock brother bands, Dwayne Almon,
- 21:50Speaker 1: Eric Clapton, Jimmy Carter. I guess heard Jimmy carter solo album.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I haven't. I heard. It's good though. I heard that
- 22:00Speaker 1: was his wife's name, not Linda Carter. Fuck was his
- 22:06Speaker 1: wife's name. I can't was the sex thing with her?
- 22:10Speaker 1: There was something. I don't know what it was. It's
- 22:12Speaker 1: a big deal. Wouldn't be a big deal now, but
- 22:14Speaker 1: it was a big deal then. Anyhow, we're talking about
- 22:16Speaker 1: a lot disgrace. Lampod at gmail dot com. You want
- 22:20Speaker 1: to email us Rosalind Carter. She said something about sex

- 24:34Speaker 1: asking to do an episode on Tory Amos, but My
- 24:39Speaker 1: dad was the grandson of Ty Cobb and went to
- 24:43Speaker 1: high school with Greg Almon and Daytona Beach, and I
- 24:47Speaker 1: heard some stories. My dad, Charlie passed away from cancer
- 24:51Speaker 1: a few years ago multiple melanoma agent Orange Vietnam. Never
- 24:54Speaker 1: talked about it. He loved, loved, loved, loved, loved the
- 24:57Speaker 1: Almond brothers and generally any and all Motown. I don't
- 25:01Speaker 1: think I can listen to this episode yet because there's
- 25:03Speaker 1: a shit ton of history here that my family. I'm adopted.
- 25:07Speaker 1: No really, Catholic School Services nineteen eighty three isn't willing

- 25:21Speaker 1: thanks for emailing us. I'm gonna go through this first
- 25:24Speaker 1: of all. Thy Cob. Wow, that's just incredible. I recently
- 25:29Speaker 1: watched three quarters of the Tay Coob movie and it
- 25:36Speaker 1: was one of those things where I found the movie
- 25:37Speaker 1: to be entertaining. I liked it super hollywoodized biopic. I
- 25:45Speaker 1: think there's lots of Ty Cobb's story that I don't know.
- 25:49Speaker 1: It just struck me as like, well, this is interesting.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I see where they're getting this. I think this is
- 25:54Speaker 1: probably worse than they're saying slash more revelatory, or we're
- 26:01Speaker 1: not getting the whole picture. Maybe we're getting a lazy
- 26:03Speaker 1: take on this. I don't know. I was compelled to
- 26:05Speaker 1: dig further, but I ran out of time and energy.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Fascinated by Ty Cobb obviously a very complicated past there,
- 26:13Speaker 1: but one of the greatest ball players of all time
- 26:16Speaker 1: and wild that I guess you're his great granddaughter. That
- 26:21Speaker 1: makes sense, Yeah, do I get that right? Sorry to
- 26:25Speaker 1: hear about your father passing away, Laura, that is sad
- 26:27Speaker 1: and Yike's agent Orange Tory Amols and Rain. We're going
- 26:32Speaker 1: to get to it. I don't know how. I don't
- 26:34Speaker 1: know when, but I love the angle and I appreciate
- 26:38Speaker 1: I appreciate it, appreciate you you suggesting it, and it's
- 26:41Speaker 1: something we will do at some point. I just don't
- 26:44Speaker 1: have it quite nailed down yet. Thank you for the email, Laura.
