- 0:00Hour number two welcome back Miller and Condon.
- 0:03It's the Iowa Sports Radio network headquartered here Des
- 0:06Moines sports station one O 6.3 KXNO momentarily Iowa State
- 0:12women's head basketball coach Bill Fennelly will join me
- 0:14coming up until just a little bit after 130.
- 0:17David Kaplan a little bonus Cappy here today with trade
- 0:21deadline coming up. We'll talk Cubs with cap
- 0:24centurion. Stone of eye makes that
- 0:26possible. We'll do Cappy here just past
- 0:281:30. Well, as we said early in the
- 0:30week, one of my goals this week was going to was to be to talk
- 0:34to some old guys still in sports in the market.
- 0:37Sam Burnaby year #42 talked to him earlier in the week and the
- 0:41only coach that's still at his post that predated the advent of
- 0:45a sports talk radio in Des Moines is my next guest, Bill
- 0:48coach. Bill Finley.
- 0:50Coach, this is Ken Miller, good to talk to you.
- 0:52How are you, Coach? How's your summer going?
- 0:55I'm doing well, Ken, thanks for having me on.
- 0:57It's been busy, but good. A lot of stuff going on and it's
- 1:01hard to believe it's almost August.
- 1:03Unfortunately, I don't have my Cardinals in the hunt.
- 1:07The baseball's kind of faded away from me but but it's been
- 1:11busy. But excited to to finish up our
- 1:14summer workouts and get the fall here.
- 1:17It's time for college football. Yeah, indeed.
- 1:19We'll, we'll obviously save some time for for that, just because
- 1:22Toledo has been so good to Iowa State as far as their coaches go
- 1:27with yourself and Matt Campbell. But trade deadline, Jay, how
- 1:30close are you watching it? Your hardcore Cardinals fan?
- 1:32It's not their year. You're paying attention to it at
- 1:35all. Yeah, I, I really am, Danny,
- 1:38because you know, I, I, you knew it was going to come.
- 1:42Obviously they they got rid of Helsley and Steven Batts and I
- 1:46think there's they're really made the decision.
- 1:49They're just going to literally got the thing and start over.
- 1:52And, you know, you start looking at and go, who are all these
- 1:55prospects that they're signing? And you know, they traded Steven
- 1:58Mats for a AAA infielder from the Red Sox, which the current
- 2:03general manager of the Cardinals came from the Red Sox.
- 2:05I'm hoping he drafted a good guy there.
- 2:07But you know, the Cardinals just, they just need a complete
- 2:11reset, which is kind of odd for for a Cardinal fan to say, but
- 2:15it needed to happen and we'll see where it goes.
- 2:18I want to go back to within the Wayback Machine 1995 when you
- 2:22get to Iowa State. And I know I've read stuff over
- 2:24the years about the you still got the box score in your office
- 2:28the very first game that you coached and there was, I don't
- 2:30know, hundreds or 1000 people in the building.
- 2:33Obviously times have changed. But when you think back, Bill,
- 2:36to to 1995, when you first get the job and you take over and
- 2:40your coaching, what did you think you were getting into back
- 2:44in the day? Did you think that this was in a
- 2:46perfect world going to be a a long time destination in Ames or
- 2:51were you looking at it as just this is just the next step up
- 2:54the ladder? What were you thinking back in
- 2:551995 when he took the job? Yeah, I don't know what I was
- 2:59thinking, to be honest with you when it happened.
- 3:01But you're right, I do have a box score.
- 3:04For all you older fans of my vintage, you know what a box
- 3:08score is? The young people don't know what
- 3:10that is, but it hangs by my door as I walk out every day.
- 3:14And the first game I coached at Iowa State, we had 310.
- 3:19That was the tennis. But no, Kenny, really when we
- 3:21got here, Gene Smith was our athletic director.
- 3:24He had a vision. We were getting ready to go into
- 3:26the Big 12. I, I was, I've been here so long
- 3:29that Colorado's back in the league.
- 3:32They were, they were in the Big Eight with us.
- 3:33But I, I really, I'm from Iowa, my eyes from Iowa.
- 3:38My, our parents were still alive at the time, obviously.
- 3:41And we just felt like this is where we wanted to live.
- 3:43We came here with a fifth and a first grader and I told my wife,
- 3:48I said let's come. We took a pay cut to come here,
- 3:52but we really wanted to live in the state of Iowa.
- 3:55And I told my wife, I said, babe, it doesn't work.
- 3:58You know, my brother owned a bar.
- 3:59I'll go 10 bar somewhere or something.
- 4:01That's kind of what happened. And we got really lucky that we
- 4:05had, we got a lot of good people early and a lot of people that
- 4:08invested in US and you know, it kind of grew from there.
- 4:12One of the things I I recall thinking back to late 90s, into
- 4:16the into the new century, I guess you call it, that was your
- 4:19your relationship with Dan McCartney.
- 4:21Still assumingly very close to this day, but both you and Coach
- 4:25Mack kind of arrive at the same time and you seemingly both
- 4:28gravitated to one another. Yeah, we did both crazy Irish
- 4:33guys and you know, I came in about 3 or 4 months after Coach
- 4:36Mack and we did, we spent a lot of time together.
- 4:40Truly one of the most amazing people I've ever been around.
- 4:45I tell people all the time. And I mean he's, you know, if he
- 4:48died with five true friends in your life, you're going to die a
- 4:50lucky person. And Dan McCartney is one of my
- 4:525:00. And if we would not have built
- 4:55this thing, built the attendance without Coach Mack, He he was
- 4:59so, you know, he's the most enthusiastic, positive guy ever.
- 5:02And he really helped me out a lot and helped helped us grow
- 5:07this. But you know, 2-2 guys that
- 5:11similar in age that came back home and tried to build
- 5:14something in a place that most people thought was impossible.
- 5:17And it just seemed like our personalities, our vision meshed
- 5:21and we became very good friends. I talked to him all the time and
- 5:26he is truly special and helped us do something that I think a
- 5:31lot of people didn't think that happened.
- 5:32And certainly what he did for our football program is going to
- 5:35be well documented forever. Yep, no doubt about it.
- 5:39The other thing, your staff, I mean Jody Starr, been there a
- 5:41long time, but the continuity in a coaching staff coach, what
- 5:46does that mean to a program? You know, Kenny, I think it's
- 5:49you. You know, it's really hard to
- 5:51do. We found the right people that
- 5:53fit. We fit each other on and off the
- 5:57floor. We've got a lot of people have
- 5:59been with us. Coach Dyer been with me forever.
- 6:01Coach Haven, we recruited and played for us at Toledo.
- 6:05Obviously my son Billy's on our staff.
- 6:07Josh Carper is an Iowa State guy, married one of my former
- 6:10players. So people who love Iowa State,
- 6:12love the Midwest, love the culture, love where they are,
- 6:15and we've been lucky. You know, I think that that over
- 6:18time we've we've managed to grow together and then through all
- 6:23the changes, but amazing people that have contributed so much to
- 6:28not just our program, but to the community.
- 6:30And that's been we've been blessed.
- 6:33It's they're tremendous people and I've never been around a
- 6:37staff that's that's more connected.
- 6:38And I think it shows in the kind of kids we recruit and the kind
- 6:42of and the way we've tried to build this thing.
- 6:44And those kids grow up to be adults.
- 6:46And it's it's not lost on me, coach, that when you guys have
- 6:49and you know, you honor a former team or there's an occasion that
- 6:53you want to get some of your former players to come back.
- 6:55How many of a show up and be with that coaching staff that's
- 6:59still been in place? I mean, they, they know that
- 7:01your staff, but it amazes me just how many of the women that
- 7:05you've coached make their way back to Ames when you put out
- 7:08the call. Yeah, they do.
- 7:10And we have a huge reunion every year and it seems just grow and
- 7:13grow. And, you know, when you go to
- 7:15college, you know, you make lifelong friends and we still
- 7:17have players that, you know, they graduated 20 years ago and
- 7:21they go on vacation together and have a girls weekend.
- 7:24And, and now we're to the stage of life where they all have
- 7:29kids. And, you know, so it's like,
- 7:31it's like a huge family reunion. There's more and more little
- 7:34little guys running around. And now you're starting to talk
- 7:38about recruiting the daughters of your players.
- 7:41It's like, OK, now, now we're getting to a whole nother level.
- 7:44But they love Iowa State. They love their time here.
- 7:47And that's, that's a big part to watch them grow and, and be
- 7:51successful in life. But yeah, they love to come back
- 7:54to Ames. We always try and do it where
- 7:56there's a men's and women's game, where there's a football
- 7:58game. So they all come back.
- 8:01And we're really blessed to have those people, not just in our
- 8:04life when they played here, but now that they're, you know,
- 8:08grown adults and, and being successful, we, we love to be
- 8:11reconnected. With them, Iowa State women's
- 8:13basketball coach Bill Fedley. Fedley joining me here on the
- 8:16Iowa Sports Radio Network. I want to go back 25 years or
- 8:21so. I remember that Bob Dyer and I
- 8:23are working together. You knew Bob well you I credit
- 8:25give him a ton of credit for my career.
- 8:28Just what he how he helped me. And I remember one of our
- 8:31conversation with Bob, but it would periodically would come up
- 8:33with paying the players, etcetera.
- 8:35And I always thought that there probably needs to be something
- 8:38come their way. I didn't know would get to this
- 8:40point. Do you like the NIL era that
- 8:43we're in now? Obviously, I believe the players
- 8:45deserve it. I really do.
- 8:47But just the fact that I mean, you, you essentially have to re
- 8:51recruit your roster some years, I'm guessing.
- 8:53I mean, I know that Audie Crooks had opportunities to leave.
- 8:56She stayed, which is great for you, but do you like this new
- 8:59layer of college sports? You know, Katie, I, I don't, I
- 9:03don't want to say that I like it.
- 9:04I do think you're right. I think the players deserve some
- 9:08compensation. You know, name, image and
- 9:11likeness has turned into pay for play, which is created a lot of
- 9:16anxiety. And then when you combine that
- 9:18with the transfer portal, it really is hard to manage.
- 9:22And you're right. We you spend a lot of time, you
- 9:25know, most coaches always talk about recruiting.
- 9:28I mean, when we were on the cycle Tailgate tour became a
- 9:31joke that, you know, if everyone took a drink from when a coach
- 9:35said retention, they'd all be, you know, hungover and sick the
- 9:39next day because, yeah, I mean, retention has become a huge part
- 9:43of it. And how do you do that?
- 9:44How do you manage the money? And now with the new system that
- 9:48the incident of life put in, it's going to create a whole
- 9:50nother level of, you know, trying to figure it out.
- 9:53What are the league's doing now? You have the federal government
- 9:56involved in legislation, and it's an ongoing thing.
- 10:00And I think there's ways to do it.
- 10:03There's going to have to be people a heck of a lot smarter
- 10:05than me to figure it out. But right now it's it's very
- 10:09volatile and I don't know the best way to figure it out.
- 10:13But there something has to be done unless we just go to they
- 10:18become, you know, they collectively bargain and you
- 10:22know, they, you know, the NCAA does not want them to be
- 10:24employees. And you know, everyone's got a
- 10:27different way of looking at it, But there's there's certainly a
- 10:30lot of issues. College college athletics is so
- 10:33special. And I mean, I'm a fanatical
- 10:35college football fan. And, you know, I just really
- 10:38hate that That could go away. The, you know, The Saturdays and
- 10:42all the college basketball that people love, March Madness.
- 10:45Those are things that make, you know, sports in our country.
- 10:48I'm not a hockey guy, Kenny. All right, that's fine.
- 10:51I can't comment on that the past, even though I do watch the
- 10:55Stanley Cup Playoffs, which is insane to me.
- 10:58But I hope, I hope they can come up with some kind of model that
- 11:01balances providing what the student athletes deserve and
- 11:06keeping some level of integrity in a collegiate situation.
- 11:10I want to talk about your athletic director, Jamie
- 11:13Pollard. You mentioned the Cyclone
- 11:14tailgate tours. I'm not sure who's that idea
- 11:17that was, but they've obviously just been a massive hit.
- 11:20I'll never forget the billboards.
- 11:22It was great for business, for what I do.
- 11:24It was just phenomenal. So Jamie Pollard and how he's
- 11:28changed things in your eyes at Iowa State since, you know, he's
- 11:31been running the athletic department.
- 11:33The tailgate Tour, Kenny was Jamie's plan.
- 11:38He we wanted to get away from what I've been here so long.
- 11:42It was, it used to be golf outings and basically it was a
- 11:46bunch of 40 to 60 year old white guys, play golf, hangout, tell
- 11:51stories. And he really wanted to get to
- 11:53the families involved and kids. And I think that's been the
- 11:56biggest thing is to see all the kids and those kids are going to
- 12:00be future students, future fans, future donors, hopefully.
- 12:05But Jamies vision was, you know, obviously our facilities have
- 12:09been great. You know, used to always say you
- 12:11can't change, you know, whether you can't change the amount of
- 12:15people. So you got to figure out
- 12:16facilities. How do you draw people into to
- 12:19what you're about? Hire the right coaches, you
- 12:22know, do it the right way. Now we have Saitown that he has
- 12:25been promoting and really pushing through, which is
- 12:28exciting for not just Iowa State but for our community for
- 12:31Central Iowa. But you know, I think Jamie will
- 12:34certainly go down in history as one of the greatest athletic
- 12:37directors in at any school. And I think his impact here will
- 12:41be felt for a long, long time. And he's done some really,
- 12:44really special things. There's still challenges
- 12:47obviously ahead for all of us, but you want great leadership at
- 12:50a critical time with Jamie and Doctor Winterstein.
- 12:53We're in good spot right now and a lot of stuff to go ahead, but
- 12:58I know they'll have a great plan for.
- 13:00Doctor Winterstein, of course, she's retiring.
- 13:03When you've had the presidents or chancellors, what you know
- 13:07leave, how important is it for you and your fellow coaching
- 13:11brother and to make sure that that you know who's ever going
- 13:13to sit in that seat likes enjoy sports and is into sports and
- 13:18realizes how impactful sports is to the campus.
- 13:22Kenny, that's a great, great question.
- 13:24Great point. It's critical.
- 13:25It really is. You know, Gene Smith used to
- 13:29always tell me that that athletics is the front porch of
- 13:31the house. There is a sports talk radio.
- 13:34There is. Well, I'm told there used to be
- 13:36a sports page that ever, but that was I've got my news, you
- 13:39know, read, get up, read your, read your local sports page.
- 13:42Or the. Don't you miss that?
- 13:44Oh, I miss the USA TODAY. Is huge.
- 13:47A must for me and, and I do miss that, but so sports is a part of
- 13:52it. It's, you know, there's 65,000
- 13:54people in a football game and men's basketball game and
- 13:57women's basketball games draw well.
- 13:58So yeah, you need a president who who values it.
- 14:02Doesn't mean it's the most important thing, obviously not,
- 14:04but it does draw eyes to the university.
- 14:08It does draw people who want to donate and be a part of it.
- 14:12So I think that that's absolutely critical that that
- 14:15our new president is a leader that values what the athletic
- 14:22department can bring to the university.
- 14:25There is, you know, on a national stage, because that is
- 14:28something that you know, you can't that, that marketing, it's
- 14:31hard. You couldn't pay for that, you
- 14:33know, to see what our football team did, see what men's
- 14:35basketball did, you know, the the names and faces.
- 14:38It's just a, a ridiculously important part of the the
- 14:42landscape of any university. And you know, it's been proven
- 14:45when when sports are good, enrollment goes up.
- 14:48I mean, that's a, that's a given admin applications go up and you
- 14:52see it at schools all across the country.
- 14:54And certainly we hope that the, the new leader falls in that
- 15:00thought process. And, and I'm, I'm hoping that
- 15:02that'll be the way that the the Regents look when they, when we
- 15:05try and hire a new president. What's it like to see the growth
- 15:08of the game that you've been involved in for so long?
- 15:10NCAA payments are going up for the tournament.
- 15:13Better television now for the term is still a ways to go.
- 15:16And hopefully you'll get to that point where it's even
- 15:18unbalanced. But, but that's something that
- 15:20you've had to watch very closely and you can see it, I believe at
- 15:23least I'm, I'm anxious to hear your take.
- 15:25Moving in the right direction. Equality with the men's and the
- 15:28women. No, it's definitely gotten
- 15:31better, obviously. And I think when you look at the
- 15:36television and the attention that it's getting, it's good.
- 15:39I mean, obviously it's not ever going to be on par with men's
- 15:43basketball, football, because that's where the money is
- 15:45generated. We all understand that, but I
- 15:47think it is something that's gotten better.
- 15:50And I think, you know, there's value when you look at
- 15:53sponsorships and television contracts.
- 15:55People are sitting in boardrooms saying, OK, there is an economic
- 15:59value to me, to our company, to our to our viewership to have
- 16:04women's sports on TV, especially in our world, you know,
- 16:08collegiate basketball, you see how big softball's gotten.
- 16:13So I think it's just going to continue to grow.
- 16:15And certainly it's something that we're excited to see.
- 16:19And then hopefully that that will continue to have a spot on
- 16:23a national spotlight. And I do think any it's going to
- 16:27be there and it's going to be more consistent and it'll find
- 16:31its level, you know, and certainly hope that will
- 16:34continue for the for the young people coming up that want those
- 16:37opportunities. You mentioned summer workouts.
- 16:39What kind of team you going to have this year, coach?
- 16:42I think we have a chance to be good.
- 16:44I really do. We're very junior dominated
- 16:47team. We added a couple of portal kids
- 16:49that needed. We got to get healthy like a lot
- 16:52of people. But I do think we have a team
- 16:55that can compete at a very high level.
- 16:57I like the demeanor of our team. I like the way they've done
- 17:01about their business and I do think we have a chance to be a
- 17:04really, really good team. And you know, who knows where
- 17:08that takes us? But you know, when you play in a
- 17:10league like our good league and you look at, you know,
- 17:13unbalanced schedules and all, you know, when you play them,
- 17:16where do you play them? How healthy are you?
- 17:18Those kinds of things all come up.
- 17:20Basketball is so different than football as far as the number of
- 17:24games, obviously, and opportunities.
- 17:26But I love our team. I love what they're about.
- 17:29I love the way they've gone about their business this
- 17:31summer. And I look forward to to get
- 17:33them all together and when we start practice end of September.
- 17:36A couple more minutes, I'll let you go.
- 17:38I want to go back to Audie Crooks.
- 17:39Her freshman year did. Did you think that she was going
- 17:42to have the impact as a as a freshman that she did because
- 17:45she got everybody's attention and did so very quickly.
- 17:48Were you expecting that, coach? No, OK, I'm not going to lie to
- 17:52you. No, I knew she would have an
- 17:54impact on our team. I knew she was unique.
- 17:57I knew she was an amazing kid, raised very well, was coached
- 18:02very well coming up. But but she made a big, big
- 18:05jump. We did a summer tour the year,
- 18:08that summer and I think we saw some things in her.
- 18:11And then obviously what she did last year is, you know, so I
- 18:14think anyone maybe besides audio said, oh, I knew she'd be this
- 18:18good. They're not telling the truth
- 18:20because I don't think anyone saw that.
- 18:23But she's a great kid, great player, great ambassador for our
- 18:27state and certainly for our program, but a very unique and
- 18:31special talent and we're we're proud of what she's accomplished
- 18:35and looking forward to what they had the next.
- 18:36Two years and War USA across their jersey earlier this
- 18:39summer. That's spectacular, coach.
- 18:42Nobody's pushing you out. Do you have a, I mean, how will
- 18:45you know when it when it's time? Obviously you sound like you're
- 18:48energized. You can't wait for this to
- 18:49happen. It sounds like it's not here
- 18:52yet. But you know if Father Time
- 18:54catches up with all of us, right?
- 18:55Have you given it any thought? Are you at that point yet?
- 18:59Yeah, OK, I have not. You know, you're right.
- 19:01Father time is undefeated is my father used to always tell me.
- 19:05But, you know, as long as I feel good and I feel like the
- 19:08university is is supporting us and we can continue to bring
- 19:12people into our building that represent Iowa State, central
- 19:15Iowa the way they should. I, you know, I don't know, I
- 19:18think I just turned 68, so I'm not young, but I got more.
- 19:24I have more yesterday's than tomorrow's, I guess.
- 19:28But I really look forward to the challenges ahead and seeing
- 19:32where this thing goes. You know, obviously the new
- 19:34president and where work, collegiate sport goes.
- 19:37It's been my entire life and I really wanted to see what
- 19:41happens next. But I'm ready to keep going.
- 19:44And hopefully, like you said, hopefully somebody doesn't knock
- 19:47on the door and say it's time for you to go.
- 19:49I'm not quite ready for that yet, but it's been fun and I you
- 19:53know how this sports is so unique and different and being
- 19:57around young people every day keeps you going and I'm excited
- 20:01about the future. I enjoyed this coach.
- 20:04Thanks for popping on. Give me a few minutes please.
- 20:05You look back at your career. Well done coach.
- 20:07Friendly appreciated. Many more to come.
- 20:09Thank you, Bill. Danny, thank you and tell PC
- 20:12thanks. You guys do a great job for all
- 20:14of us and we we love listening to you guys take.
- 20:16Care Yep thank you coach bill Fenley long time coach Iowa
- 20:20State women's basketball fun conversation with coach Fenley
- 20:23and hope he does have many more years ahead of him as he heads
- 20:26in now to year 31. I want to say 1995 was when he
- 20:31got the gig. Well done, coach Fenley.
- 20:33All right, we will hear from David Kaplan coming up next.
- 20:36Fingers crossed Kapi will join me.
- 20:39I'm watching the X and the ESPN trade tracker, if you will.
- 20:45Still waiting unless I miss something for the for the Cubs
- 20:50is are they going to make a move?
- 20:51Is Alcantra in their future? Mackenzie Gore?
- 20:53They're going to be able to get their starter at any point.
- 20:56We shall see. But Kathy, he's going to
- 21:00schedule to join me next. Hopefully he can pull that off
- 21:03when we come back. Miller and Conn again, thank you
- 21:05to coach Bill Finley. Enjoyed that a bunch.
- 21:07Miller and Conn, it's the Iowa sports radio Network.
- 21:10Hi Miller and Conn and then welcome back just past 130 on a
- 21:13Thursday. I'll take you until 2:00 coming
- 21:17up with two off the bench Lucas strain.
- 21:19I have not seen Lucas yet so I didn't forgot to ask him who
- 21:21he's working with who is Co hosting with today.
- 21:24Maybe I Colts back in he has been the last two days but we'll
- 21:27find out during the next break. But regardless whoever he's with
- 21:30it's coming up at the top of the hour.
- 21:33Speaking of coming up hopefully David Kaplan will have a few
- 21:36minutes. I do a lot of media in Chicago
- 21:39here today with the trade deadline.
- 21:40Although what the hell he's talking about because the Cubs
- 21:43have done squat. Not a damn thing.
- 21:46Kittridge yesterday, Nice player.
- 21:47Don't get me wrong, nice player, will fit into the bullpen just
- 21:50fine. But man, we were kind of
- 21:53expecting a splash, were we not? Mackenzie Gore, maybe Alcantra,
- 21:58who's been better as of late. But man, he's had a
- 22:00disappointing season. We'll, we'll see where it goes.
- 22:03We'll see if Hoyer's got something up his sleeve if he
- 22:05does, because the trade deadline is coming up at 5 o'clock 5:00
- 22:11Central Time. It all ends very light night of
- 22:14baseball tonight, and I have to believe it's in part A, because
- 22:18of trade deadline day, but B, maybe because football elbows
- 22:22its way into the conversation. The NFL is back tonight.
- 22:27It's the Hall of Fame game. Look, you won't glean very much,
- 22:31if anything, from it. I think Trey Lance is actually
- 22:35starting for the Chargers in the game.
- 22:37Boy, oh, boys, he fallen on some hard time, right?
- 22:40Never got that opportunity. He was, if memory serves, I
- 22:43think the COVID year really stunted.
- 22:46Not that he was sick, his progression, because obviously
- 22:50they lost a year of football at the FCS level.
- 22:54And you know, who knows what that would have meant to his
- 22:58career. And then obviously, he was
- 22:59drafted very highly by the Niners.
- 23:02In fact, I think they give up a draft pick of all things, they
- 23:04to move up and get him. And we know it turned out that
- 23:08Brock Purdy is now getting his mail there.
- 23:10And I saw he and his wife welcomed a baby girl.
- 23:13Brock Purdy did, but we'll see. It's the Chargers tonight.
- 23:15You won't see Herbert. I don't think you'll see very
- 23:18many of the guys on either side of the football.
- 23:20But you know what you're going to see the NFL and the brand is
- 23:23going to be back on our televisions.
- 23:25Brent Musburger apparently is going to be in the booth.
- 23:28He was or is this year's recipient, I think they call it
- 23:34the Pete Rozelle Media Awards. So they'll there's a wing for
- 23:37media and Brett Musburger's going in his last gig, I believe
- 23:44was the radio voice of the LA Charger, I beg your pardon, of
- 23:49the Las Vegas Raiders. So Musburger's going to be there
- 23:53and he'll be there. He'll hear his voice.
- 23:58And you know, he still reeks of college football to me.
- 24:01And I love that about him. I thought he was very good at
- 24:03it. But you know what?
- 24:03Fowler's grown on me. He has that's a pretty good duo
- 24:06in the booth, him and him and Kirk Kerb St.
- 24:09All right, David Kaplan momentarily, we'll recap what
- 24:12there is to recap with Cap. When it comes to the trade
- 24:15deadline, the Cubs have been very quiet so far, seemingly.
- 24:19What's going on behind the scenes?
- 24:20What is Cappy hearing? And the Cap man, he joins us.
- 24:24Let's get right to him. We'll save the music for
- 24:26Wednesday is his Wednesday music.
- 24:28But he's with us and cheering Stone of Iowa sponsors.
- 24:30Cap, thanks for giving me a few minutes.
- 24:32I know you're torn a lot, pulled in a lot of directions here
- 24:34today. What?
- 24:35What are you hearing? I guess I kind of think there's
- 24:40more to come. Is there more to come?
- 24:42Cap? Well, he's trying.
- 24:44I know he's trying hard on Mackenzie Gore and I know that
- 24:49he was trying on Eugenio Suarez. That did not work out because he
- 24:54was unwilling to part with what I think he wants to use in
- 24:58another deal. And then the other thing is they
- 25:01were in hard on Shane Bieber, but you would have to give up
- 25:05Jackson Wiggins in that deal. I'm not doing that because, and
- 25:09I love Shane Bieber. Shane Bieber hasn't pitched one
- 25:13throw at the big league level since having Tommy John.
- 25:16He's looked good in AA. So you want me to give you a 22
- 25:20year old who this is their words, not mine.
- 25:23They believe he will be at some point next season on the big
- 25:27league roster. OK, so if that's the case, if
- 25:30he's going to be pitching for the Cubs next year with let's
- 25:34say he comes up, let's call it May, like Kate Horton, and
- 25:38you're telling me that that dude then I have for the rest of next
- 25:42season and six more and you want me to roll the dice on a guy who
- 25:47I think he's healthy and back from Tommy John, but I'm not
- 25:52positive. Like if you said I got to give
- 25:54up Jackson Wiggins and I'm getting Mackenzie Gore, OK, I
- 25:58got two more years of control, I could probably extend him now.
- 26:02That probably has some merit to it.
- 26:06I wouldn't like to do it, but when you want to get a #1
- 26:09starter and try and win a World Series, like if I if 5:00 comes
- 26:13and they say we're done, we did nothing else than Mike Soroka
- 26:16and Andrew Kittredge. Jed's a really nice guy, but I'm
- 26:20going to blast him because I do not want to hear.
- 26:23The prices were just stupid and we couldn't rash.
- 26:27Then why did you trade for Kyle Tucker over the winter?
- 26:29That will be my question, because you said we're all in to
- 26:33try and win the World Series. So we're going to give up Cam
- 26:35Smith, we're going to give up this Hoc Paradis, we're going to
- 26:39give up five years or four years of control on Hayden Wisnetsky.
- 26:43Then why did you do that if you're not all in?
- 26:46Because your team's good enough to take a run at it.
- 26:49So either put on your big boy pants and trade somebody or do
- 26:53not make the Kyle Tucker deal because we're not serious about
- 26:56winning. Will you be shocked if own
- 26:59Casey's still down here in Des Moines after the trade deadline
- 27:02today? Well if they make a big deal
- 27:05I'll be shocked if own Casey isn't a part of it now.
- 27:07I just saw the Mark Fine Sand report a little while ago where
- 27:12he said, I don't know if you saw it.
- 27:14He said that rival teams are saying that the Cubs are
- 27:18refusing to put Moises by a sterile into a deal.
- 27:22And so that is why the Cubs haven't gotten anything done
- 27:26yet. OK, I was there yesterday.
- 27:28I was in Milwaukee tangling with Brewer fans.
- 27:30If you were watching my Instagram.
- 27:32And I love that he got a big bases clearing, bases loaded
- 27:37double. That was awesome.
- 27:39He's 21 years old. So is that the guy I want
- 27:43hitting against Mason Miller, potentially in the NLCS against
- 27:48the San Diego Padres? Again, maybe I'll be proving,
- 27:52you know, wrong and that that dude's going to like Mason
- 27:54Miller at 104.1 the other day? I don't think so.
- 27:59So why can the San Diego Padres keep adding and adding and
- 28:03adding and adding and the Chicago Cubs are going to give
- 28:07me Andrew Kittridge and Mike Soroka and that's it.
- 28:10I refuse to believe he won't do something else by 5.
- 28:13O'clock yeah, I got to believe it as well, Cap, but I'm with
- 28:15you on by Sterils. Look, he's a DH in the in the
- 28:18major leagues. He's not a catcher.
- 28:19He can't play on field. I doubt he can be first a first
- 28:22baseman. He's a designated here and it
- 28:24may workout, but I'm shocked when I saw that that same report
- 28:28that you did, I thought I just got, you know, put my head in my
- 28:30hands and couldn't believe that this is at least where they
- 28:34possibly were going. All right, let's talk about
- 28:36yesterday. We'll get back to the trade
- 28:37deadline. One of my concerns and you kind
- 28:39of not you brushed it off it for the most part and I think you
- 28:42were proven right yesterday was Imonaga.
- 28:44You just thought it was 1 bad start.
- 28:46I thought the velocity going in the wrong direction was kind of
- 28:49a not that not the best of signs.
- 28:51Thought he was really good. Only got through 5 but 8
- 28:53strikeouts. Cap Imonaga looked good
- 28:55yesterday. Your thoughts?
- 28:57Yeah, I mean, I thought he looked really good, but he's
- 29:00never going to be a guy at 97 that's going to blow you away if
- 29:04it's not who he is. That's not that guy.
- 29:07But he got 8 strikeouts. He did give up the two home runs
- 29:10to William Contreras, but other than that, I thought he made big
- 29:14pitches in big spots and I was super cool with how he pitched
- 29:19and. You know you've woken up.
- 29:22And had days just like I have in this business where I went yeah
- 29:26God, my throat or my voice just isn't as strong.
- 29:30I've had to record commercials and walked in by man I don't
- 29:34know how you can get through this thing commercial and it's
- 29:38it's a challenge that can happen to his art.
- 29:42You wake up and go I slept wrong on it.
- 29:44Oh my, velocity doesn't mean he blew on his rotator calf either.
- 29:49Palencia, if he is the closer cap, I've said this for the last
- 29:52month or so, I think he's fine. I do.
- 29:55I know he hasn't had the, you know, the experience of pitching
- 29:58a closing a game in the playoffs for you knows Mason Miller on
- 30:02one side and Palencia on the other coming in to to finish off
- 30:06the game. Would you be cool with Palencia
- 30:08if they if they don't find a closer and it doesn't look as
- 30:11though they're going to as seemingly most of the targets
- 30:13have found their way elsewhere. Yeah, I'm cool with him, but my
- 30:18question is it's the 7th or the 8th inning and here comes, let's
- 30:23pick a name killer comes Shohei Otani, the bat for the Dodgers
- 30:29and there's two men on and I've got a three to two lead.
- 30:33OK, I got Caleb Theobar. He's OK, he's fine.
- 30:37I don't have Mason Miller, I don't have Edwin Diaz, I don't
- 30:41have Helsley. Who's the other guy?
- 30:43They just got Ryan Helsley. I don't have Joan Duran.
- 30:46Like I'm looking at all the other teams are on baseball and
- 30:49going. They're serious about winning.
- 30:51They are all in to try and win. Now, if you told me the Cubs
- 30:55were a 500 team and they're 2 back of the last wild card, OK,
- 31:01You don't want to push all in because you don't believe your
- 31:04team's good enough. OK, I'm cool with that.
- 31:07Your team by the end of the first place again, I mean, you
- 31:11have a really, really good baseball team.
- 31:14So the fact that if if this is what it is, I again, I like Chad
- 31:19very much. I think he's a very good guy
- 31:21when he's a really smart guy. If they do nothing, that is a
- 31:25slap in the face of a great fan base.
- 31:28Speaking of that fan base, will they be cool with the match off?
- 31:31He's the third baseman going forward this year.
- 31:34Yeah, I think they absolutely will.
- 31:35And I don't think there's many Cub fans that would trade Matt
- 31:39Shaw. I don't care who you're getting,
- 31:41I'm not giving him up. I got this dude just came up
- 31:44this year. He's going to fall short of
- 31:46service time this year. And so here I've got six more
- 31:51years of control for a guy who I think is really good defensively
- 31:56and is going to be a really good hitter.
- 31:58He's starting to show flashes of it.
- 32:01And you want me to give that guy up?
- 32:03I'm not doing that. All right, I gave up Cam Smith
- 32:06already. I've traded away Paradis
- 32:08already. So who is going to be my third
- 32:11baseman? Where am I getting one?
- 32:13He's there. Matt Shaw, I'm with you.
- 32:15Matthew Boyd. First bad outing of the year.
- 32:18Just draw a line through it Cap. Yeah, I don't have any problem
- 32:22with it. I haven't heard anything in
- 32:24terms of a health concern. Yeah, I got no issues.
- 32:28They had one bad start. That happens.
- 32:31You know, I like Freddy Peralta. He was terrible.
- 32:33Yeah. He was, he was bad.
- 32:34Luis Robert. Is he going to move from the
- 32:36White Sox? It's from what the call I made
- 32:39about an hour ago to somebody who's over there, he said.
- 32:44Right now I would bet you that he stays.
- 32:47Now my question is, are you picking up his $20 million
- 32:51option? You must.
- 32:53Now they have as much payroll flexibility as anyone because
- 32:56they pay nobody. So if you're going to look at
- 32:59Luis Robert, who has had a really good month of July, if
- 33:02you're going to keep Luis Robert, now you have to pick up
- 33:06the $20 million option. Otherwise, what are you doing?
- 33:09Yeah, I agree. With you Not like you can get a
- 33:11qualifying offer. You either pick it up or he's a
- 33:13free agent. Yep.
- 33:13Walks out the door. Adrian Houser saw him pitch
- 33:16against the Cubs. Is he?
- 33:18Is he potentially? Could he be a Cub?
- 33:21Would you be floored? I would be floored because he's
- 33:25not good enough to start a playoff game in my opinion.
- 33:28He's a nice back end starter. That's it.
- 33:32So I just got Mike Soroka. Why do I need Adrian Hauser?
- 33:35Yeah, that fair. So the we're getting back Assad
- 33:38and I'm getting back Ty. Tyon, yeah.
- 33:41So I've got a plethora of mediocrity coming back.
- 33:44That's. Her mediocrity.
- 33:47Good stuff. Well, Cap, will you put a recap
- 33:49up at some point tonight if indeed we get the six O clock
- 33:52and there's nothing in the queue?
- 33:54There will be a live trade deadline show that my partner
- 33:58Ryan Mcguffey is doing at 4:30 on our channel, but I will do a
- 34:04baseball trade deadline, Cubs, White Sox recap that will be up
- 34:09tonight. I'm going to guess 7:30 or so.
- 34:13I'm going to put it up maybe 8:00 as soon as all the deals
- 34:16have been processed. You know how like 1/2 hour?
- 34:17Later takes a while there's. Another deal.
- 34:19So I'll wait for MLB to go. All right, we're done.
- 34:22Everything's been processed, then I will record and we'll put
- 34:25it up. And last thing for you, just
- 34:27because it was there was so much confusion around Ian, happy he's
- 34:30going to the IL. Well, he's not going to the IL,
- 34:31but he's going to miss some time.
- 34:33Well, he didn't miss. Any time he comes in, he hits a
- 34:35home run yesterday. Was that the media that ran with
- 34:38that or I mean, how was everybody so wrong on Ian
- 34:41happened? What?
- 34:42That was marquee. Is that what it was that out?
- 34:45Yeah, somebody at Marquee put out Ian Hap to the IL and The
- 34:49funny thing is I was at work today at radio and a friend of
- 34:51mine comes up to me and he said, you know why I was having drinks
- 34:55with the other night? I said who?
- 34:57Yes, two nights ago, yesterday afternoon I said who?
- 35:01He said Ian Haps brother and they were watching the game and
- 35:04he said the brother turned away for a second and then he said,
- 35:09dude, your brother just hit a home run.
- 35:10He's like what? No, my father's on the IL.
- 35:14No. That's unbelievable, Capra.
- 35:18Thanks for doing this, buddy. Appreciate the relationship.
- 35:20We'll talk to you next Wednesday.
- 35:21Thank you, Capra. What?
- 35:23You didn't even ask me. That's day of camp for Caleb
- 35:26Williams. Luther Burden, Colston level.
- 35:28Yeah, they were killing. It all of those youngsters, huh?
- 35:31The two Rook? I'd be the two rookies.
- 35:32Wow. Yep, and Caleb, best day of the
- 35:35camp. Good stuff.

- 37:20sitting in here with me today. It's been a lot of fun.
- 37:24We'll continue to monitor the trade deadline if indeed
- 37:26anything does shake. There's been another closer
- 37:31changing addresses Bednar, the talented closer from the
- 37:35Pirates. Not very busy closer, not needed
- 37:38a whole bunch. But he is now going to the, I
- 37:41think it's the Yankees where he's going to call home.
- 37:44So they're making some moves. The Cubs, you're up.
- 37:50Bednar Weaver and Devin Williams at the back of that bullpen for
- 37:54the Yankees. Boy, bullpen arms in high demand
- 37:59as the trade deadline now moves to three hours away.
- 38:02Hey, thanks for being with me. I really appreciate it.
- 38:04Miller and Con to talk sports with you every Monday through
