- 0:15Speaker 1: you're new to this channel and you haven't subscribed yet,
- 0:18Speaker 1: which by my numbers is about 50% of you, make
- 0:21Speaker 1: sure you hit that subscribe button right now. I want
- 0:24Speaker 1: to see how fast we can grow this channel during
- 0:26Speaker 1: this college football season. Okay. So we've had a little
- 0:30Speaker 1: bit of time to digest Florida's season opening win over FAU.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And on Monday, Coach Summerall got back in front of
- 0:37Speaker 1: the media after having the opportunity to really sit down,
- 0:41Speaker 1: watch the film, and evaluate what happened. And I thought
- 0:45Speaker 1: his press conference was actually really interesting. There was plenty
- 0:50Speaker 1: that Summerall liked about what Florida did offensively. He really
- 0:53Speaker 1: liked Aaron Filo. He really liked the offensive line, I
- 0:57Speaker 1: think maybe more than some people expected. He loved the
- 1:01Speaker 1: way the receivers and the tight ends blocked. But defensively,
- 1:05Speaker 1: he was really clear that there is a lot of
- 1:07Speaker 1: work left to do. So I want to take today
- 1:10Speaker 1: to give you my biggest takeaways from Summerall's press conference,
- 1:15Speaker 1: what I think was important, what maybe got overlooked. And
- 1:19Speaker 1: what some of these answers tell us about this Florida
- 1:22Speaker 1: team moving forward. So my first takeaway, I think this
- 1:26Speaker 1: was easily the biggest thing that stood out to me
- 1:30Speaker 1: at the entire press conference, was that Summerall went back
- 1:33Speaker 1: and watched the defensive film and said repeatedly, his guys
- 1:37Speaker 1: played hard. That's important. He didn't come out and say
- 1:41Speaker 1: Florida was loafing. He didn't question whether guys wanted it.
- 1:46Speaker 1: He didn't question their effort or their desire. What bothered
- 1:50Speaker 1: him was their situational awareness. He gave the example of
- 1:54Speaker 1: third and one and Florida having a corner playing nine
- 1:57Speaker 1: yards off. That can't happen. He talked about understanding down
- 2:01Speaker 1: and distance, formation, splits, spacing, handling tempo, knowing when to
- 2:06Speaker 1: challenge receivers, and when to play off. Basically, Florida's defenders
- 2:10Speaker 1: need to understand not just what the call is, but
- 2:14Speaker 1: why the call is being made and how the situation
- 2:17Speaker 1: should change the way that they execute it. I think
- 2:21Speaker 1: the quote that he had really summed up his frustration.
- 2:23Speaker 1: He said Florida was either young or in his words,
- 2:27Speaker 1: untrained at certain spots. And that's fascinating to me because
- 2:31Speaker 1: Summerall's essentially saying, I think we have some guys capable
- 2:35Speaker 1: of doing this, but right now they haven't been trained
- 2:37Speaker 1: well enough, i.e. coached well enough to react correctly in
- 2:41Speaker 1: every situation. So that's putting it on the coaches too.
- 2:46Speaker 1: He said, we have to coach better. That wasn't Summerall
- 2:49Speaker 1: throwing his players under the bus. It was him saying
- 2:51Speaker 1: the entire operation defensively has to become sharper. And Campbell
- 2:56Speaker 1: is actually going to give Florida another test here. because
- 2:59Speaker 1: they play with tempo too. So if you watch one
- 3:03Speaker 1: thing on Saturday, forget the final score for a minute,
- 3:07Speaker 1: watch how quickly Florida gets lined up. Watch the cushion
- 3:12Speaker 1: in the secondary. Watch whether guys seem to anticipate what's
- 3:16Speaker 1: coming based on formation. That's where Summerall wants to see
- 3:20Speaker 1: the biggest jump. Takeaway number two, he thinks Florida may
- 3:25Speaker 1: have gotten a little too comfortable. And I thought this
- 3:28Speaker 1: was another interesting answer. After the game, Summerall hinted that
- 3:32Speaker 1: maybe some guys thought they were a little further along
- 3:34Speaker 1: than they actually were. He did clean that up a
- 3:37Speaker 1: little bit on Monday, but he didn't exactly walk it back.
- 3:40Speaker 1: He said he doesn't think Florida has players walking around
- 3:43Speaker 1: thinking that they're the best players in America, but he
- 3:46Speaker 1: does think that maybe they've been too relaxed. And I
- 3:49Speaker 1: love the way that he phrased this. He said every
- 3:52Speaker 1: seven days, you're either going to be promoted or exposed.
- 3:57Speaker 1: That's going to become one of those Sumrall-isms that we
- 3:59Speaker 1: hear over and over again if I'm a betting person.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I'm going to take a quick break from this video
- 4:04Speaker 1: to give some love to our partners over at Alumni Hall. Guys,
- 4:07Speaker 1: the season is upon us. We are in it, and
- 4:11Speaker 1: I know you guys are just like me, and you

- 4:41Speaker 1: Peter Millar, Jordan, Cutter & Buck, everything you could possibly
- 4:45Speaker 1: imagine all at one place. So either visit them in
- 4:47Speaker 1: Archer Road when you head to Gainesville or shop online, alumnihall.com.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Make sure you tell them I sent you. We appreciate
- 4:53Speaker 1: Alumni Hall for all their support. His point of view
- 4:57Speaker 1: is basically you don't get to carry anything over from
- 5:01Speaker 1: one week to the next. You don't get to assume
- 5:04Speaker 1: that you've arrived. You don't get to say, well, we're
- 5:07Speaker 1: Florida and they're FAU, or this week we're Florida and
- 5:10Speaker 1: they're Campbell. If you aren't locked in on the details,
- 5:14Speaker 1: somebody is going to expose it. And we did see
- 5:17Speaker 1: a little bit of that on Saturday. Now, Florida won comfortably.
- 5:20Speaker 1: But some of the things that you can survive against
- 5:23Speaker 1: FAU are going to get you absolutely killed when the
- 5:27Speaker 1: SEC schedule starts. And Summerall knows that. And I think
- 5:30Speaker 1: he's trying to fix the mindset before Florida reaches the
- 5:34Speaker 1: portion of the schedule where those mistakes become losses. My
- 5:38Speaker 1: takeaway number three is Summerall was extremely pleased with Aaron Filo.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And you know, think this whole coaching staff walked away
- 5:49Speaker 1: from the opener feeling good about our quarterback situation. So
- 5:53Speaker 1: everyone said Philo made some really good decisions. He said
- 5:56Speaker 1: the interception was not on him and should have been caught.
- 6:00Speaker 1: He praised the way Philo communicated at the line of scrimmage.
- 6:03Speaker 1: He praised his leadership. He praised his decision-making as a runner.
- 6:06Speaker 1: And he specifically pointed out multiple downfield throws that he
- 6:11Speaker 1: thought were really good. That is the part that stood
- 6:14Speaker 1: out to me. Coming into the season, we talked so
- 6:16Speaker 1: much about Philo having, you know, to avoid feeling like
- 6:20Speaker 1: he needed to be Superman. Get the offense in the
- 6:23Speaker 1: right play. Make the right decision. Take the easy completion.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Use your legs when it's there. Take the shot when
- 6:29Speaker 1: you get the matchup. That's pretty much exactly what Summerall described.
- 6:33Speaker 1: He even used the word clean. Now, was it perfect? No.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Summerall pointed that out a couple of times. He talked
- 6:40Speaker 1: about a few shorter throws that came out a little funky.
- 6:44Speaker 1: But overall, he said Philo operated at a high level.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And that is about as good of a week one
- 6:52Speaker 1: review that you could ask for from your head coach.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Takeaway number four, the offense is designed to make life
- 6:59Speaker 1: miserable for defense. He gave us a really good explanation
- 7:04Speaker 1: of what Buster Faulkner's offense is trying to accomplish. He
- 7:08Speaker 1: said the offense wants to, quote, threaten every blade of grass,
- 7:13Speaker 1: both vertically and horizontally. I love that description. Because one play,
- 7:18Speaker 1: you can have run action going one direction and a
- 7:21Speaker 1: passing option going the other direction. So now that linebacker
- 7:24Speaker 1: or safety has a problem. What are you reading? Where
- 7:28Speaker 1: are your eyes? Do you fit the run? Do you widen?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Do you carry something vertically? That is the conflict this
- 7:34Speaker 1: offense is trying to create. And when you combine that
- 7:38Speaker 1: with Aaron Filo making good decisions and Jaden Baugh in
- 7:41Speaker 1: the backfield and speed on the perimeter, suddenly you understand
- 7:45Speaker 1: why Florida looked so efficient offensively. Florida didn't punt Saturday.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Think about that. Not one time. And Summerall even joked
- 7:54Speaker 1: that he loves Alec Clark, but he'd be perfectly happy
- 7:56Speaker 1: to never see his punter play. He actually joked about
- 7:59Speaker 1: how he's a great holder and that's all he really
- 8:01Speaker 1: needs to see. Obviously, that is not going to happen
- 8:04Speaker 1: all season, but it tells you just how consistently Florida
- 8:07Speaker 1: stayed ahead of the chains and kept drives alive in
- 8:10Speaker 1: that opener. Takeaway number five. This one stood out to
- 8:14Speaker 1: me because offensive tackle was one of the biggest question
- 8:17Speaker 1: marks entering the season. And the offensive line may have
- 8:21Speaker 1: been better than we thought it was going to be.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Summerall's assessment was pretty positive. Now, he definitely did not
- 8:28Speaker 1: call the offensive line elite. In fact, he almost went
- 8:31Speaker 1: out of his way not to. But he did say
- 8:33Speaker 1: they looked organized and prepared and cohesive and well-coached. I
- 8:38Speaker 1: think his word was competent. And that may not sound
- 8:42Speaker 1: like the biggest compliment in the world, but considering where
- 8:45Speaker 1: the conversation around this offensive line has been, Competent football
- 8:49Speaker 1: is a pretty darn good starting point. He thought the
- 8:52Speaker 1: tackles played well. He thought Bryce played well. He thought
- 8:56Speaker 1: a Gorgie played well. He thought dice played well when
- 8:58Speaker 1: he entered the game and some all gave Buster Faulkner
- 9:01Speaker 1: credit for helping those tackles. Florida isn't planning to drop
- 9:05Speaker 1: back 50 times a game and let defensive ends tee off.
- 9:09Speaker 1: They're going to run the football. They're going to use
- 9:11Speaker 1: play action. They're going to get the ball to the perimeter.
- 9:14Speaker 1: That's protecting your tackles. That's coaching around what your personnel
- 9:18Speaker 1: does well. Now, the obvious negative was the snapping issue.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Summerall said Harris had five bad snaps and four of
- 9:26Speaker 1: those came on the exact type of block. That makes
- 9:29Speaker 1: it a little less alarming to me because it gives
- 9:32Speaker 1: you something very specific to fix. We already spoke to
- 9:37Speaker 1: an offensive line expert earlier in the week, too, who
- 9:39Speaker 1: said that every bad snap was high and right and
- 9:42Speaker 1: that that's something... that's easier to correct than if it's
- 9:45Speaker 1: kind of all over the place. So this wasn't five
- 9:47Speaker 1: completely random breakdowns. They identified the common denominator already. And
- 9:52Speaker 1: Summerall made it pretty clear to everybody involved that he
- 9:55Speaker 1: was furious about it and he expects it to be corrected.
- 9:58Speaker 1: So the offensive line is not a finished product, but
- 10:01Speaker 1: I came away from this press conference more encouraged about
- 10:04Speaker 1: that group than I was going into week one. Takeaway
- 10:08Speaker 1: number six is maybe my favorite part of the Summerall
- 10:11Speaker 1: era so far. He was asked about how decisive Florida
- 10:16Speaker 1: appeared on fourth downs, and he basically said, yeah, that's me.
- 10:19Speaker 1: He makes the decision. They use analytics. John Donovan helps
- 10:23Speaker 1: with the situational information. But Summerall made it clear that
- 10:26Speaker 1: he isn't blindly following some analytics sheet. He uses the information,
- 10:31Speaker 1: then combines it with game situation, matchups, the opponent, his defense,
- 10:35Speaker 1: the kicking game, and his own instincts. And his instincts
- 10:39Speaker 1: are aggressive. He said, if Florida is outside its own
- 10:42Speaker 1: 40 and it's fourth and one, you're betting on whether
- 10:46Speaker 1: Florida will go for it? Bet yes. That is a
- 10:49Speaker 1: pretty strong statement. But what I found even more interesting
- 10:53Speaker 1: was how much communication goes into the decision before fourth down.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Summerall's telling Buster Faulkner early in that drive, hey, if
- 11:01Speaker 1: we get into fourth and two here, we're going. Now,
- 11:04Speaker 1: why is that important? Because now Buster can call third
- 11:07Speaker 1: down differently. Third and four doesn't necessarily mean you need
- 11:11Speaker 1: four yards. You can call something designed to get you
- 11:14Speaker 1: two or three knowing you have another play. That impacts
- 11:17Speaker 1: the entire offensive sequence. Summerall also said something that I
- 11:21Speaker 1: think tells you a lot about what he wants this
- 11:23Speaker 1: team to become. If you coach aggressively, eventually your players
- 11:27Speaker 1: are going to play aggressively. If you coach passively, they'll
- 11:31Speaker 1: play passively. He wants Florida to have an attacking mindset,
- 11:36Speaker 1: and he's willing to live with the times that the
- 11:38Speaker 1: aggression fails in order to establish that identity. Takeaway number seven. Listen. Listen.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Jaden Baugh is becoming exactly the runner Summerall wants to be.
- 11:51Speaker 1: We all saw what he did on Saturday. But I
- 11:54Speaker 1: thought Summerall's explanation of why Baugh looks better was very interesting.
- 11:59Speaker 1: He called him powerful, sudden, violent. But he also said
- 12:04Speaker 1: Baugh has become more decisive. When Summerall first got to
- 12:07Speaker 1: Florida and watched last year's tape, one of the things
- 12:10Speaker 1: he told Baugh was missing essentially is that you've got
- 12:13Speaker 1: to stop trying to make everybody miss. You are a
- 12:16Speaker 1: big physical dude. Sometimes you just need to put your
- 12:20Speaker 1: foot in the ground, get north and south, and make
- 12:22Speaker 1: somebody deal with you. And Summerall thinks Baugh is doing
- 12:26Speaker 1: that now. One cut and go. That makes him scary
- 12:30Speaker 1: because Baugh still has the ability to make people miss.
- 12:33Speaker 1: We saw that on that long run. But when you
- 12:35Speaker 1: pair that with a willingness to get downhill and punish defenders,
- 12:40Speaker 1: now other teams have a problem. And one other nugget
- 12:43Speaker 1: Summerall gave us, Florida plans to throw him the football.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Baugh didn't have a catch against FAU, but Summerall said
- 12:51Speaker 1: specifically that was not by design. So don't be surprised
- 12:55Speaker 1: if that becomes another wrinkle of this offense very soon.
- 12:59Speaker 1: And finally, do not... expect Summerall to let this team
- 13:04Speaker 1: look ahead. Florida plays Campbell this week, and we all
- 13:08Speaker 1: know what's coming down the pipeline after Campbell. But Summerall
- 13:12Speaker 1: wanted absolutely nothing to do with looking ahead. His phrase
- 13:16Speaker 1: for this week is, be where your feet are. And
- 13:20Speaker 1: I think Campbell is actually a useful opponent for where
- 13:23Speaker 1: Florida is right now. They're playing fast offensively, Summerall said
- 13:27Speaker 1: they look dramatically improved from last season. They're averaging more
- 13:30Speaker 1: than 500 yards per game, and he believes their quarterback
- 13:33Speaker 1: is playing a really high level of football. So Florida
- 13:36Speaker 1: gets another opportunity to work on exactly what hurt them
- 13:39Speaker 1: defensively against FAU. Communication, tempo, spacing, situational awareness, and attention
- 13:46Speaker 1: to detail. That may be the story of Saturday more
- 13:49Speaker 1: than whether Florida wins by 30 or 40 or whatever
- 13:52Speaker 1: the number ends up being. Can this defense look more connected?
- 13:56Speaker 1: Can they get lined up faster? Can they play with
- 13:58Speaker 1: better awareness? Can the pass rush actually finish when it
- 14:02Speaker 1: gets home? Because Summerall said something else that I think
- 14:06Speaker 1: we should remember. There is a difference between playing hard
- 14:10Speaker 1: and straining. He wants another level, and he clearly does
- 14:15Speaker 1: not believe Florida reached that level in week one. So overall,
- 14:19Speaker 1: after listening to Coach Summerall, I actually think that there
- 14:21Speaker 1: are reasons to feel pretty good about where Florida is offensively.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Aaron Filo looks comfortable. Jaden Baugh looks like a star.
- 14:29Speaker 1: The offensive line was functional and maybe even encouraging. The
- 14:33Speaker 1: scheme appears to fit the personnel, and the head coach
- 14:36Speaker 1: is going to be aggressive. Defensively, there's talent there. But
- 14:39Speaker 1: there is also clearly a gap between how Summerall and
- 14:42Speaker 1: Brad White expect this defense to operate and what we
- 14:45Speaker 1: saw on Saturday night. And that is what I am
- 14:47Speaker 1: going to be watching this week. Not whether Florida beats Campbell.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Florida should beat Campbell. I want to see whether the
- 14:54Speaker 1: things Coach Summerall was frustrated about on Monday actually look
- 14:58Speaker 1: different on Saturday. Eventually, Florida is going to have to
- 15:02Speaker 1: face teams where being a step late, playing nine yards
- 15:05Speaker 1: off on a third and one, or failing to communicate
- 15:07Speaker 1: against tempo doesn't just make the film look ugly. It
- 15:11Speaker 1: loses you football games. I need to see that growth
- 15:16Speaker 1: that happens generally between week one and week two. Let
- 15:19Speaker 1: me know what your biggest takeaway was from Summerall's press conference.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Are you more encouraged by this offense? Are you concerned
- 15:25Speaker 1: about the defense? What is the number one thing you
- 15:28Speaker 1: want to see Florida clean up against Campbell? Let me
- 15:31Speaker 1: know down in the comments. Big thank you, as always,
