- 0:00So patterns are everywhere in the world, and we think in
- 0:02patterns and we actually understand the world when we see
- 0:05the patterns around us. And I want to share with you a
- 0:09word that you're all familiar with, but may have not seen it
- 0:12in the way that we're going to talk about.
- 0:14So I do a lot of writing and I use a software called Word.
- 0:18And in Word, it actually has templates for types of different
- 0:22writing projects I might want to use.
- 0:24And those templates are patterns that guide me to do things in a
- 0:28certain way and to actually avoid mistakes that might be
- 0:31very common in a particular project.
- 0:33A template is a pattern that shows us a model for how to do
- 0:38something, and I love that the Word template comes from the
- 0:43same word, temple. And a temple is a place where we
- 0:48go to experience God's patterns for life.
- 0:52He shows us how we can live and how we can align our lives to
- 0:56what he's expecting so we can find our way back in the
- 0:58presence of of him. So when you go to the temple,
- 1:01when you think about the temple, think about what is God teaching
- 1:04me? What patterns is he revealing?
- 1:06How can I put my life into alignment with the template that
- 1:09he's putting there? Tyler's going to walk through
- 1:12these chapters with us and show how Nephi teaches us the gospel
- 1:17through patterns through a temple pattern.
- 1:19In second Nephi 31, we are told by Nephi that he's basically
- 1:27done. I'm finished, I can only write a
- 1:29few more things and everything that I've written up through
- 1:33chapter 30 right before this. In our our current version 30.
- 1:37He says it suffices me verse two, save it be a few words
- 1:41which I must speak concerning the doctrine of Christ.
- 1:46You'll notice he says I I'm done.
- 1:48I've I've written everything that I need to write except for
- 1:51I need to write a few more things concerning the doctrine
- 1:53of Christ. Now if you pop down to verse 21,
- 1:57turn the page over, you'll notice that halfway through that
- 2:01verse he says he's basically given you the doctrine of
- 2:05Christ. About 5 lines from the bottom,
- 2:07he says, behold, this is the doctrine of Christ and the only
- 2:11and true doctrine of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
- 2:14Ghost, which is 1 God. Amen.
- 2:16So if you connect these, it becomes this, this neat little
- 2:22bookend technique that ancient writers used all the time when
- 2:27they were giving you definitions or clarifying something.
- 2:31So a lot of people are familiar with the word chiasmus because
- 2:34Jack Welch made that famous about 50 years ago in the Book
- 2:38of Mormon. And it's that literary, ancient
- 2:40literary structure that is shaped like this because it's
- 2:46shaped like part of an X, which chi is the Greek letter for X.
- 2:50So it's chi asmus. Most are familiar with that.
- 2:54Here is another one of those kinds of ancient literary
- 2:58techniques that's all over the place in the Bible and in the
- 3:00ancient world, but you'll also find it all over the place in
- 3:04the bookwormon. They call it inclusio, which is
- 3:07the same meaning for inclusion. And what that technique is, is
- 3:11if you're going to give a definition, make sure that you
- 3:14clearly demarcate where you're starting your definition and
- 3:17where you're ending it. Jesus is going to do this in 3rd
- 3:21Nephi 27. Nephi does it here, You're going
- 3:25to find it these these inclusio bookends in all kinds of
- 3:29different places where they start things and end things.
- 3:33So if you want to know what the doctrine of Christ is, you'll
- 3:35look in here ironically. Actually in this particular case
- 3:40Nephi is going to give you a little sub extension to the
- 3:45closing in chapter 32 verse 6 where he says behold, this is
- 3:51the doctrine of Christ. So you get 2 closers and one
- 3:55opener. So there you go.
- 3:57Now with that foundation, let's dive in and look at the doctrine
- 4:01of Christ. But Nephi tells you he's going
- 4:03to speak in plainness, so he's he's going to just lay it out in
- 4:07plainness. We're not going to cover all of
- 4:10the details He describes in chapter 31 Why Jesus, the Lamb
- 4:14of God, would have to be baptized because he was holy.
- 4:19He gives you that description. You can look for all of the
- 4:21reasons that he gives down through verse 10.
- 4:25Now something fascinating happens in verse 11.
- 4:29And the Father said, repent ye, repent ye, be baptized in the
- 4:33name of my beloved Son. That's interesting because
- 4:36Nephi's sitting here writing and all of a sudden he says, oh, and
- 4:39the Father said so. Does that mean he's quoting the
- 4:42Father from some scriptural source?
- 4:45Look at verse 12. And also the voice of the Son
- 4:49came unto me, saying, He that is baptized in my name to him will
- 4:54the Father give the Holy Ghost the opening part of the doctrine
- 4:59of Christ? Is Nephi getting words from both
- 5:02the Father and the Son. If that's all we got, we would
- 5:06say, OK, I think he's listening to both the Father and the Son
- 5:09speak to him, But look at what happens as you turn the page
- 5:11over. Look at verse 14.
- 5:14But behold, my beloved brethren, thus came the voice of the Son
- 5:18unto me, saying, So now he's going to hear the voice of the
- 5:21Son again. And then verse 15.
- 5:23And I heard a voice from the Father saying, yeah, the words
- 5:28of my beloved are true and faithful.
- 5:30He that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.
- 5:33Brothers and sisters, Nephi has spent his whole life here.
- 5:36He is towards the end of his life.
- 5:37He's old. He knows he's done writing after
- 5:40these these concepts are finished.
- 5:43And he's been listening to the voice of the Spirit his whole
- 5:46life. And now here towards the end,
- 5:49he's being able to distinguish the voice of the Son speaking to
- 5:53him, and the voice of the Father and recording those, Oh, and by
- 5:58the way, the voice of the Father in scriptures.
- 6:02If you look at all of the times when we know for sure that it's
- 6:05the Father speaking, and especially when he's introducing
- 6:08the Son, there's one word that is more commonly repeated in all
- 6:13of those scriptures than any other that I can find.
- 6:17And that word is Beloved. He's a God of love, and he, as
- 6:22he introduces His Son, he introduces him in every case as
- 6:24the Beloved Son. We know that Jesus is fully
- 6:28aware of the fact that Heavenly Father loves Him, but how do you
- 6:31think it makes even Him feel when he hears the Father
- 6:34repeatedly tell people how much He loves the Son of His?
- 6:40If we want to be more like the Lord, we might want to spend
- 6:43more time verbalizing that love for others.
- 6:46That's just a little side note. Let's play a really quick game
- 6:51of Pictionary. I'm going to Draw Something on
- 6:54the board. I can't play because I know what
- 6:55the answer is, right? OK, yeah, you can't give any any
- 6:59cheat here. A window.
- 7:04Any guesses yet might help if we do that.
- 7:19OK, what we have here is the ancient Tabernacle.
- 7:22This is an insight that I first heard shared in an in service
- 7:27many many years ago up at the Logan Institute by Brother Shank
- 7:30and I've loved this ever since and and thought through it and
- 7:34and it's just a gift that just keeps on giving.
- 7:37Nephi is going to teach us the doctrine of Christ, but he's
- 7:40coming out of a context of Jerusalem with Solomon's temple
- 7:45up on Mount Moriah. And Solomon's temple is built
- 7:49after the manner of the Tabernacle in ancient Israel
- 7:53with Moses. So watch what happens, as Taylor
- 7:57was saying there. The word temple is a template,
- 8:00there's a pattern, and you fit all these symbols into this
- 8:03pattern. The Gospel of Jesus Christ fits
- 8:07all together. Its teachings aren't different
- 8:09than its practices. If you figure out how they're
- 8:13they're all coming together, and symbolically, they find
- 8:17beautiful manifestations. So watch what happens here just
- 8:21really quickly. Orientation wise, the outer
- 8:23courtyard is a nice symbol for the telestial Kingdom, the inner
- 8:31court, which in the temple is different than the Tabernacle
- 8:35because this is a tent. This part right here is an
- 8:38enclosed tent. This is called the Holy Place.
- 8:41This is called the Holy of Holies.
- 8:43So this is a nice symbol representation for a terrestrial
- 8:48Kingdom. And here is the presence of God
- 8:51with the ark of the covenant, the mercy seat.
- 8:55And so you get this progression in the gospel of Jesus Christ
- 8:59that is taking you from the world in through progressively
- 9:04ascending and increasing capacities until you can walk
- 9:07back into the presence of the Father.
- 9:09That's the whole point of a temple experience, The temple.
- 9:14The template is how to become like God and how to come into
- 9:19His presence. Look now at chapter 31, verse
- 9:2413. Wherefore, my beloved brethren,
- 9:26I know that if you shall follow the Son with full purpose of
- 9:29heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but
- 9:32with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the
- 9:36Father that you're willing to take upon you the name of Christ
- 9:39by baptism, by following your Lord and your Savior down into
- 9:43the water, then you shall receive the Holy Ghost.
- 9:46Then come with the baptism of firing of the Holy Ghost.
- 9:48And then can you speak with the tongue of angels as you look at
- 9:51this, anytime you get into symbolism again it's layered and
- 9:55and this isn't intended to close your mind off to only one
- 9:59interpretation, and nothing else is valid.
- 10:01It's to say this is 1 angle to look at the doctrine of Christ.
- 10:05There are many other wonderful and valid angles as well, so
- 10:09we're just going to work with this one for a minute.
- 10:11The altar of sacrifice is a beautiful symbol in many
- 10:15respects of what it means to really repent, to sacrifice
- 10:20something and consume it on this altar, the Laver.
- 10:24I get it that it's not a A in the Tabernacle context.
- 10:28It's not a baptismal font, but it's a place where the priests
- 10:32could wash and become clean in order to enter into the Holy
- 10:38Place and perform their priestly functions.
- 10:41Now you're noticing that repentance and baptism then
- 10:45cometh the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 10:47Well, the light of the seven candles on the menorah, the
- 10:52Candelabra, is in many respects a nice analogy to the lamp unto
- 10:58our feet, the Holy Ghost being this light that is given to us.
- 11:02So we can now enter the tent and get that the gift of the Holy
- 11:06Ghost. As we've worked through this
- 11:07process, you're noticing that we're missing faith in the Lord
- 11:11Jesus Christ in the first principles and ordinances.
- 11:14I would say there's a nice symbol for that right here.
- 11:17Faith in Christ is what brings us to the altar to repent.
- 11:23Notice we have faith in Christ. We don't check it at the door.
- 11:27We bring it from that outer gate, We repent.
- 11:29We get baptized, then we get the gift of the Holy Ghost.
- 11:33Notice this. Go to verse 17.
- 11:35Wherefore do the things which I've told you that I've seen,
- 11:38that your Lord and your Redeemer should do for this cause?
- 11:40Have they been shown unto me that you might know the gate by
- 11:43which you should enter? For the gate by which you should
- 11:46enter is repentance and baptism by water.
- 11:50Then cometh the remission of your sins by fire and by the
- 11:54Holy Ghost. Often I think we put so much
- 11:57emphasis on the cleansing nature of water that we get this idea
- 12:01that we are baptized and now we're fully cleansed and we're
- 12:05fully forgiven. Nephi seems to be telling us
- 12:08here that after we've repented and gotten baptized, then cometh
- 12:14the remission of your sins by fire and by the Holy Ghost.
- 12:20It's the two stage cleansing process and you need both of
- 12:23them in order to be completely forgiven.
- 12:27Now notice verse 18 then Are ye in this straight and narrow path
- 12:31which leads to eternal life? Brothers and sisters, I don't
- 12:34know about you, but in the English I learned as a kid
- 12:37growing up, I would have never in a million years used the
- 12:40preposition in when referring to a path.
- 12:45If I'm on my way somewhere, I would never say I'm in the path.
- 12:49To the why. Up on the mountain here in
- 12:51Provo, I'm in the path. I would never say that.
- 12:54I would say I'm on the path. So makes you wonder if if
- 13:00there's a mistake here, right? Notice verse 19.
- 13:03And now, my beloved brethren, after you've gotten into this
- 13:08straight and narrow path, so it looks like it wasn't a mistake,
- 13:13it looks like Nephi's serious about this word, that it's in
- 13:17and into a path, not on and onto the path.
- 13:23Now, the only way that in my mind I can reconcile that is if
- 13:28the path is symbolized by something that is actually
- 13:34inside something. The gate by which you enter into
- 13:38the path, Then are ye in the path, brothers and sisters, the
- 13:44holy place is the straight and narrow path.
- 13:48In this symbolic interpretation, when you get baptized, you are
- 13:54entering into a covenant with God, and you're entering into
- 13:57the Kingdom of God on the earth. This room right here, it's
- 14:01totally enclosed in the Tabernacle.
- 14:04You are in the straight and narrow way.
- 14:08You're in this path, and when you get baptized today, you
- 14:13enter into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the
- 14:16Kingdom of God on the earth. This Holy place is a nice symbol
- 14:21for the church itself. So people who say no, I can go
- 14:25and connect with God better in nature than going and gathering
- 14:27with the Saints. It's this idea of there is
- 14:30something that takes place in the holy place that is the
- 14:35covenant path. It's the straight and narrow
- 14:37path. And I have to gather here in
- 14:40order to really keep progressing.
- 14:42Here's the problem for some they they have faith, they repent.
- 14:47They get baptized, they get the gift to the Holy Ghost.
- 14:49They come up to the veil. This curtain, this veil is
- 14:53covered with angels. It's here at the altar of
- 14:57incense, where they pray, They knock.
- 15:01You knock on at the veil to try to get in to the presence of
- 15:05God. You make your requests.
- 15:07The smoke is ascending off of that.
- 15:10That altar of incense in front of the veil, symbolic of all of
- 15:13the prayers and the desires and the and the heartfelt goals of
- 15:17these people ascending in front of the presence of God just on
- 15:23the other side of that curtain. Now you've said your prayers,
- 15:27you're pleading, you're knocking, you come over to the
- 15:29table of showbread, and it's there where you have 12 loaves
- 15:33of unleavened bread. Rabbinical tradition says that
- 15:35there's also a pitcher of wine there, and this gets replaced
- 15:38every week. You feast on the words.
- 15:42You, you read your scriptures, you read your patriarchal
- 15:45blessing, You listen to general conference.
- 15:47You feast on the words of the Lord wherever they can be
- 15:51brought into your life. Then you walk by the light of
- 15:54the Spirit, seeking His guidance.
- 15:55You pray, you read your scriptures some more.
- 15:58You go to church and you keep going.
- 16:00And after a while, some members of the church feel like they're
- 16:04just going in circles and they feel like, Why do I have to have
- 16:10another lesson on this topic? Why do I need to go to the
- 16:13temple again? I don't get anything out of it.
- 16:16Some people will say, what happens if you take your camera
- 16:20angle from here and go down to here and watch what's happening.
- 16:24People come. They repent with faith.
- 16:28They get baptized. They receive the gift of the
- 16:31Holy Ghost. They enter into the Holy Place,
- 16:35the straight and narrow path, the Church of Jesus Christ of
- 16:38Latter Day Saints. They then begin this process.
- 16:44And yes, they are indeed going in circles.
- 16:50They're definitely going in circles.
- 16:51But the point, brothers and sisters, is you're having
- 16:55another lesson on faith, or you're having another lesson on
- 16:59charity, or you're having another lesson on temple work.
- 17:02For the 100th time, you're having a lesson, but you're
- 17:06having that lesson now from a higher level, a higher
- 17:09perspective, More life experience, more trials and
- 17:13tribulations you've passed through and learn from, more
- 17:15mistakes you've made and grown through.
- 17:17And you can understand them and participate at a different level
- 17:21than you could the first few times you had those kinds of
- 17:24lessons, and you can help encourage others to stay on the
- 17:27covenant path. Look at verse 20.
- 17:30Wherefore ye must press forward with a steadfast faith in
- 17:33Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope and a love of
- 17:36God and of all men. Wherefore, if he shall press
- 17:39forward, feasting upon the words of Christ, and endure to the
- 17:43end, behold, thus saith the Father, ye shall have eternal
- 17:47life, and this is the way. Now notice, as you shift over
- 17:51into verse or into chapter 32, he says.
- 17:55Now behold, my beloved brethren, I suppose that you ponder
- 17:57somewhat in your hearts concerning that which you should
- 18:00do after you've entered in by the way.
- 18:03But behold, why do you ponder these things in your hearts?
- 18:05Just because you're in the church?
- 18:07You've done all these things. Now you're in the Church, and
- 18:09now you're like, OK, now what do I do?
- 18:12Do you not remember that I said unto you after you'd received
- 18:14the Holy Ghost? You could speak with the tongue
- 18:16of angels. How could you speak with the
- 18:19tongue of angels? Save it.
- 18:20We're by the Holy Ghost. When you are in the Holy Place,
- 18:24the Holy Ghost is slowly teaching you the tongue of
- 18:27angels. You're learning to communicate
- 18:30in a tongue that you weren't born with.
- 18:32You're not native, the tongue of angels.
- 18:35There are angels all over the veil, separating and guarding
- 18:39the way into the presence of God.
- 18:43And so he tells you in verse 3, Angels speak by the power of the
- 18:45Holy Ghost. Wherefore they speak the words
- 18:47of Christ. Wherefore, I said unto you,
- 18:49feast upon the words of Christ. Now notice this verse. 6 Behold,
- 18:54this is the doctrine of Christ. And there will be no more
- 18:57doctrine given until after. He shall manifest himself unto
- 19:01you in the flesh. If He's manifesting himself unto
- 19:05you in the flesh, you're now in His presence.
- 19:08You've made it through the holy of holy earth, through the veil
- 19:11into the holy of Holies. You're now in His presence.
- 19:15Nephi has been talking about all these other things.
- 19:16Now we finally get into the presence of God.
- 19:19Watch this. There will be no more doctrine
- 19:22given until after ye shall manifest himself unto you in the
- 19:24flesh. And when he shall manifest
- 19:25himself unto you in the flesh, the things which ye shall say
- 19:28unto you shall ye observe to do Now.
- 19:30Here we go. He's going to describe this holy
- 19:32of Holies. Experience verse 7.
- 19:34And now I, Nephi cannot say more.
- 19:38The Spirit stop with mine utterance.
- 19:40And I am left to mourn because of the unbelief and the
- 19:42wickedness and the ignorance and the stiff neckedness of men.
- 19:45For they will not search knowledge, nor understand great
- 19:48knowledge, when it is given unto them in plainness, even as plain
- 19:50as word can be. Nephi was apparently ready to
- 19:54tell us some things about what it's like to be in the presence
- 19:57of the Lord. We know he has been back in
- 19:59first or second Nephi. 11 He tells you this and and you see
- 20:02the great vision from first Nephi.
- 20:05And he was probably ready to share some things, and the
- 20:08Spirit stopped him. No, Nephi, don't write that.
- 20:12So Nephi's left mourning, saying, Oh no, I I was kind of
- 20:17building up and wanting to share this.
- 20:18Now I can't. So what is his conclusion?
- 20:21Verse 8I perceive that you ponder still in your hearts, and
- 20:25it grieve with me that I must be concerning this thing.
- 20:27For if you would hearken unto the Spirit which teaches the man
- 20:29to pray, you would know that you must pray, for the evil spirit
- 20:33teaches not a man to pray, and so then he tells us to pray.
- 20:35Always you just keep praying and praying and praying and pleading
- 20:41your way through this process until that day comes for you
- 20:44that the that the veil opens up. This is a beautiful pattern.
- 20:49We hope that as you look at what Tyler's laid out here on the
- 20:52board, you can see Nephi's words afresh, and then you can see the
- 20:56temple experience and you can see where you're at on this
- 20:59path. And I love what we've read here
- 21:01in verse 18 of 2nd ephi 31 then are ye in the straight and
- 21:07narrow. And it reminds me of Nephi and
- 21:11Lehi both seeing the tree of life.
- 21:13There's a straight and narrow path that leads to the tree
- 21:17where you fully partake of the fruit of the atonement.
- 21:21And this is that straight and narrow path.
- 21:23The temple is the template or the pattern.
- 21:26And so as you read the scriptures, you can see these
- 21:29patterns happening throughout scriptures, and this just
- 21:31reveals in plainness what Nephi was trying to convince us of.
- 21:36Now, one other thing to add to this little over layer.
- 21:40This template, so to speak, is a realization of what it means to
- 21:45live. I'll just redraw those What it
- 21:48means to live in the dispensation of the fullness of
- 21:52times in Jesus's day, in Nephi's day, in Moses's day, there are
- 22:00very clearly delineated and and marked off boundaries.
- 22:06If in the time of Jesus, if you're a Gentile in in Herod's
- 22:12Temple, there is a a fenced latticework sore egg that you
- 22:18are not allowed to pass. If you're a Gentile, that's as
- 22:21close as you can come to the presence of God.
- 22:23If you're a Gentile in Jesus Day, if you're a woman, you can
- 22:27come into the court of the women.
- 22:29That's as far as you can go in Jesus's day.
- 22:32If you're a man, you can come into the court of the men, which
- 22:35is just a little bit further. If you're a priest, you can come
- 22:39into the court of the priest. And if you're assigned to do one
- 22:42of the functions inside of the Holy Place, you can go in and do
- 22:46that. But only one person gets to go
- 22:49into the Holy of Holies one time a year on Yom Kippur, the Day of
- 22:53Atonement. Now today, everyone, all are
- 22:57alike unto God. Black, white, bond, free, male,
- 23:00female, Jew, Gentile, all of these.
- 23:04Jesus has broken down all of these boundaries.
- 23:07The veil has been ripped open from top to bottom, which means
- 23:11heaven ripped the veil. Mankind did not.
- 23:14Heaven opened wide the gate and made open the path.
- 23:20But there's only one path. There's no back door in.
- 23:23There's one path to come in, and it is a straight and narrow way
- 23:27that brings us into him. All of these Gentiles, these
- 23:30women, these men, these priests, everybody is welcome to come
- 23:34into the celestial room of the temple today.
- 23:37And that is what we're walking through in a beautiful template
- 23:42way at one level when we go and do an endowment session in the
- 23:46temple of our God today as we're learning how to walk back into
- 23:49the presence of Father. Oh my gosh, this is so awesome.
- 23:52So exciting. This is why I love the
- 23:54scriptures. I love the gospel.
- 23:55I love Revelation. It's just so exciting to see
- 23:58that God has a plan and it's just everywhere.
- 24:01And sometimes we just need to peel a bit of the layers of our
- 24:05fallen world to see the patterns that God has revealed.
- 24:07So this is really exciting, Tyler.
- 24:09It's really fun to see this. OK, last chapter.
- 24:12And then we have to say farewell to Nephi.
- 24:15Look at verse one, chapter 33. Now I, Nephi, cannot write all
- 24:19the things which were taught among my people, neither am I
- 24:23mighty in writing like I'm just speaking.
- 24:25Now. How many times have you read the
- 24:27books of first and second Nephi and thought to yourself, this is
- 24:32so painful. Nephi is such a a bad writer, I
- 24:35wish I could listen to him speak because his words are kind of
- 24:39kind of weak. How many times have you had that
- 24:41experience? If you're like me, you're saying
- 24:44man, this guy is phenomenal with words.
- 24:48But look what he says here. When a man speaketh by the power
- 24:52of the Holy Ghost, the power of the Holy Ghost carries it unto
- 24:56the hearts of the children of men, just like back when we were
- 24:59talking about the path on versus in.
- 25:03Another funny preposition here. If a man or a woman is speaking
- 25:09by the power of the Holy Ghost, the power of the Holy Ghost
- 25:10carries it unto the heart of the children of men, he says.
- 25:16If you are doing your job as a speaker, the power of the Holy
- 25:20Ghost is going to carry it unto the hearts of your listeners.
- 25:24The word we would have probably preferred that he used there
- 25:29would be into. And this is a fascinating little
- 25:35word play going on in English. It it doesn't work in other
- 25:38languages, what's the only difference between those?
- 25:42You'll notice that it comes down to you and I.
- 25:46Let's play this out a little bit further.
- 25:49If you do your job as my teacher and I'm sitting in your Gospel
- 25:53Doctrine class, we're in a sacred meeting where you're
- 25:55speaking. If you've done your job and you
- 25:58have prepared by the power of the Holy Ghost, you've you've
- 26:01prepared your heart, your mind. You come and you present, he
- 26:04says when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost, the
- 26:06power of the Holy Ghost carries it unto you did your job.
- 26:11I have to do my job as a learner to let it in.
- 26:15Now what do you notice? Look at the word heart.
- 26:21It begins with hear. You actually have an ear in your
- 26:27heart, and it happens to be in the middle of your heart, not on
- 26:30the wings. Which means your heart has to be
- 26:32softened. It has to be opened in order for
- 26:34that ear to hear. And by the way, it is he to whom
- 26:38you really listen. Not us, not, not the people at
- 26:42the pulpit, not the the people sitting in the couches around
- 26:46you. You listen to the to the voice
- 26:49of the spirit. And it is somewhat of an art
- 26:51form. It'll get easier, like a
- 26:54language that is foreign to you at first, an art form that gets
- 26:59easier over time the more you soften and ask God to soften and
- 27:04open your heart. Then you can actually get to the
- 27:08point where even if the speaker is awful and has not prepared,
- 27:14you can still have the Holy Ghost come and teach you.
- 27:17Because the most important truths that you're going to ever
- 27:19learn in life aren't going to bounce off of your eardrums.
- 27:23They're going to be truths that are felt deep in your heart.
- 27:25That's where lives. Change is down in this level,
- 27:29not at the eardrum level and at the retina level of the eyes.
- 27:35People don't change because of things they see and hear.
- 27:39They make lasting changes because of things they feel, and
- 27:42I think Nephi is lamenting the fact that he can't force this
- 27:46message in, but if he could speak to us, we would at least
- 27:50have the message carried on to. But at the end of the day,
- 27:52brothers and sisters, it's our job to open up these scriptures,
- 27:56and not just open the scriptures, but open our heart,
- 27:59because we've opened the scriptures and let that message
- 28:03distill on our on our souls. We're going to invite you now to
- 28:07spend time with those that you love looking and pondering and
- 28:12searching the scriptures, and listening to Nephi's final
- 28:14testimony puts it right here in verse 10.
- 28:17If you shall believe in Christ, you will believe in these words,
- 28:22for they are the words of Christ, and he hath given them
- 28:24unto you, and they teach all men that they should do good.
- 28:28And after all the things that Nephi has written, that's what
- 28:31he wants us to focus on. Tyler and I have spent a lot of
- 28:33time studying and teaching scriptures.
- 28:35There's a lot of amazing things to talk about, but what really
- 28:38matters is Jesus. You know, can we talk about the
- 28:41transmission history of scriptures, the translation
- 28:43process, symbolism, on and on and on.
- 28:48I mean, I spent years in Graduate School.
- 28:50In fact, one of the graduate schools I was in had 500,000
- 28:53books just on scripture. OK, that's a lot of books.
- 28:56In fact, I once did it. I figured out it'd take me years
- 28:59just to read the titles, not even the books themselves.
- 29:01Nephi's just being really focused.
- 29:02Like, look, it's all about Jesus.
- 29:04Don't get distracted. Stay on the straight and narrow
- 29:07and believe in Christ. If you do those things, you will
- 29:10have the joy and the prosperity that He has promised.
- 29:14So let me finish with with one other quick concept here, the
- 29:17very, very last testimony from Nephi.
- 29:20He says, For what I seal on earth shall be brought against
- 29:24you at the judgment bar. For thus hath the Lord commanded
- 29:27me, and I must obey. Amen.
- 29:31If you can think of one phrase that would be the most
- 29:34appropriate way for Nephi to sign off, what word would you
- 29:39expect him to use in there? I think most of us would think
- 29:42obey is a pretty good last word. Besides the word Amen that
- 29:46defines Nephi, I must obey. So as you embark on this study
- 29:53and you, you keep in mind that all the doctrines you're
- 29:56learning tie into the same template as what we've talked
- 29:59about with the temple and this journey that we're making back
- 30:03to the presence of God. And we do it symbolically every
- 30:06time we go to the temple. I just need to share one quick
- 30:09experience with you from the temple.
- 30:11Years ago, my wife and I were sitting in the bountiful UT
- 30:14temple in the ceiling room that we actually had been sealed in a
- 30:17few years before, and her sister Tamara was getting married to
- 30:22our soon to be brother-in-law, Greg.
- 30:25And they walked in and their sealer walked in in front of
- 30:28them and stood on one side of the altar while they sat on the
- 30:32sofa. And the sealer was right in
- 30:35front of me and my wife where we were sitting.
- 30:37And he said to us, my wife and I, I don't remember all the
- 30:40details because I wasn't paying that close attention.
- 30:42At that point he said something like my wife and I just returned
- 30:46from the Holy Land. And he, I think he talked about
- 30:49some things that they had seen in Galilee and down in Jerusalem
- 30:52and how significant that was for him.
- 30:54But then he said this part, and I'll never forget this.
- 30:56He said it is a holy thing to walk where Jesus walked, but it
- 31:02is a holier thing to walk where Jesus walks.
- 31:07Welcome to the temple, brothers and sisters.
- 31:10He had my attention. Sometimes we wait to experience
- 31:15joy and to experience light and and heavenly things for the next
- 31:21life. Brothers and sisters, we'd
- 31:23invite you to experience the plan of happiness today as you
- 31:26dive into the book at deeper levels than you've ever done
- 31:29before. Tread on those pages and walk
- 31:34where Jesus walks by visiting the temple, and keep keep this
- 31:38process moving and growing. And yeah, it might feel like
- 31:41you're going in circles, but if you're doing it right, those
- 31:43circles are taking you to a pretty, pretty sacred space.
