- 2:09South Main Street, tell them Curtis frying and Robbie sent
- 2:13you. Bobby.
- 2:15How you doing tonight, man? I won't know why I'm doing well,
- 2:21doing well hanging out in my, in my high school team opposite.
- 2:26Talk a little bit hokey Pokéballs.
- 2:28Yes, we are mad now, Robbie show you shirt, they're just so
- 2:31everybody can see who you do coach.
- 2:34So, here's what I'm going to say and why we love having Robbie on
- 2:37the North will football team. In 2020.
- 2:43Under coach with techy. Who's one of your best friends
- 2:46in the football world? He came in struggling program.
- 2:49They won one game. You joined him last year?
- 2:54And y'all want three games? Yeah that's 30 percent
- 2:58Improvement. Robbie.
- 2:59Why don't you tell them what y'all did this year man?
- 3:03We made a pretty good turnaround this year.
- 3:06We had 73 overall, during the season, only lost one game at
- 3:11home loss to the arguably, best kick to 8:18 and he's Siri,
- 3:19you'll know them, there's a couple of young men in
- 3:22Blacksburg right now from East 3rd.
- 3:25The gosh male voice and really good program, but we went into
- 3:31our first playoff game here. A week before last their first
- 3:36playoff game since 2013, I think it was.
- 3:39Wow, I did not know that you have been that down.
- 3:43Wow, I've been told seven and three regular season was
- 3:47possibly one of their best records.
- 3:49One of the top 5 best records in school district.
- 3:52Well dude, making some improvements building some
- 3:56building, some guys, and hoping to build something good.
- 4:01Well, first of all, it's awesome, it's in the turnaround.
- 4:03Y'all made there so quick. I know y'all, we mentioned that
- 4:08there was a kid across town there.
- 4:10That's currently committed to State and was heavy on the heavy
- 4:14on the heavy on the Hokies radar.
- 4:17So on but also I'm that you all turned around in in case
- 4:21anybody's wondering where Brian is Brian's currently riding
- 4:24Space Mountain around Disneyland and Disney World right now.
- 4:30He goes to Disney World, he'll get the front of the line stuff,
- 4:33but I'm sure he's having a blast.
- 4:35I know he mentioned a grilled cheese.
- 4:37Exactly. I mean, probably just spending
- 4:40some time in Germany and Epcot just drinking all day, whatever.
- 4:44But be honest, truth is the reason.
- 4:47This was a day that the Court stays open, late bronze.
- 4:49Obviously down there with his family, and Brian hit up, Robbie
- 4:52last week and said, hey, Robbie season's over for you to do you
- 4:55want to keep looking at some tape and Robbie, Lee has
- 4:59graciously, Looked at a lot of tape between the do gaming.
- 5:05You've been up with two weeks before watch cake?
- 5:07I needed something to do. You need is some, you didn't
- 5:09like a fix. I need to fix him.
- 5:11Shaking him shaken. He between the Duke game and
- 5:14the, and then scouting on Liberty.
- 5:17So, Rodney's got a ton of us. So, Robbie, you know, you looked
- 5:22at the film of this game, particularly, and I want you to
- 5:25coach, to give me what you're feeling, what can be done
- 5:29differently, what's on the right?
- 5:30Because we're going to look at this a little different, you
- 5:33know. Usually, it's me and Brian in
- 5:34here. Here's a big play.
- 5:35There's a big play. But having someone like yourself
- 5:39on here, it's a different set of eyes.
- 5:41It's where we can ask you different questions.
- 5:43You've been with us before. It's always been great.
- 5:45We've, if y'all want to know how long me Robbie and Brian have
- 5:48known each other Middle School, Middle school.
- 5:53So Napoli with each other and against each other.
- 5:55Since we were young pop against each other but we've roughly
- 6:01known each other 25 plus years. So it's easy to have them on
- 6:05here. No.
- 6:06Robbie I know you said before you started today you you did
- 6:10want to give a disclaimer so nobody screaming and manage you.
- 6:14Well, I mean, as a coach I look at things a little differently
- 6:18than some people do You know, you deal with players and other
- 6:25coaches and things every day, and there's some critique,
- 6:29there's some ways you go about business and people just
- 6:33understand that the more I'm going to be going tough in some
- 6:36areas on coaches and players as well.
- 6:39But it's all in, it's all in improving things and it's just,
- 6:45it's the way I go about things. The way I see things.
- 6:50I got it, I got it. Make sure I continue to write
- 6:53relationships to four kids of our future and everyone I've
- 6:57ever known. But Robbie, Robbie is basically
- 7:02saying Rob. He's basically saying if, if
- 7:06coaches watches thing, I gotta make sure we're doing everything
- 7:09right here. Coach Holton, backyard.
- 7:12So I can't be, I can't be messing around too much.
- 7:15There you go. There you go.
- 7:17Alright, so Brian. You see me Robbie and we'll see
- 7:20how many times I'm going to do that.
- 7:21Tonight will Well, I am watching a matching bag company for a
- 7:24month worse as you have and maybe buy me a couple of times.
- 7:29We got Maxine going on back here, Toledo versus other heck
- 7:32of a catch by the kid Toledo versus Bowling Green.
- 7:35It's like 28 is snowy at the glass bowl.
- 7:39Yeah. All right.
- 7:40But let's flip it to this. Let's recap 24/7 lost by the
- 7:43Hokies, and we're going to start on offense Robbie.
- 7:47And, you know, let's take a look at You know, let's take a look
- 7:53at Grant Wells and, you know, you know, the background on
- 7:57Wells, he played at Marshall for two years, but the Duke game,
- 8:03you know, it was kind of more of the same in basically, as we
- 8:07look at it here, let me get the stat lines up because for some
- 8:12reason I did not have those pulled up.
- 8:14This is what happens when you have to do this part of the
- 8:16show. You forget crap, but but Wells
- 8:19was 16 to 28, he only threw for 77 yards, one touchdown one pic
- 8:25and the ball eight times for 11 yards, did have a long and 15.
- 8:28So obviously he got hit numerous times in the backfield.
- 8:31Yeah. And and Robbie at me and you
- 8:33were talking earlier this week and you know, for the year he's
- 8:37under 60% Completion. He's at like, 58.
- 8:42What did you notice in this game?
- 8:45And maybe some of the other game, I know you've kind of
- 8:47caught some games off and on, you know what have you noticed
- 8:51in this game that he does to maybe help that are Islington
- 8:55towards being under that 60% in? Is there anything you think
- 8:59they're trying or potentially he could do different Honestly
- 9:05watching a lot of film and I watch several games, you know,
- 9:09just TV wise. And I made sure, I checked out a
- 9:13good number game, especially the ones where it look like a
- 9:16struggle. A little more offensive ly,
- 9:18understand Scout stuff. In when you see pretty
- 9:23consistent in staying right around that 58 to 60 percent
- 9:29completion. He the biggest thing I see in it
- 9:35is a lot of times he's throwing in the rain because he's not
- 9:39getting a lot of really good protection and he's having to
- 9:45move around. I don't know if it's a if it's
- 9:48all protection wise if they build in a lot of the rollouts
- 9:52and Sprint out to things like that but there's a couple times
- 9:56I know gets Duke, they get some pressure and he tries to step.
- 10:00Away from depression and he gets forced away from where his
- 10:03receivers are working and he ends up having there's at least
- 10:06twice, he had to throw the ball away against do.
- 10:10And as we know, throwing it away, that's cool.
- 10:12Bring down that completion, percentage always will.
- 10:14But when you say step away, but is that a football IQ thing?
- 10:18Because if you're, if, you know, if you're on left hashing,
- 10:23everything's going back towards the right, hash and that side of
- 10:26the field, nothing. I know the inclinations get away
- 10:29from pressure, but isn't that the wrong way to go?
- 10:33Shouldn't you be stepping up or stepping towards?
- 10:36Where your guys are? You would think so?
- 10:38Yes, sometimes Park is dictating and try to roll a certain way
- 10:43and then there's even more pressure in that place, you know
- 10:46he is he is a quarterback, do we know will take off and gain what
- 10:50he can when he came. And so sometimes going I feel
- 10:54like going away from it. He's just like, okay well I can
- 10:57pick up what I can because That's not bad.
- 11:02He does have some instances where he makes pretty good
- 11:05decisions. Pretty good throws and I don't
- 11:07feel like this receiver is helping, sometimes it's fate.
- 11:10Okay? Foxy is sometimes, especially
- 11:14when he's trying to make check Downs quickly.
- 11:18And it's almost like they're unexpected.
- 11:19Sometime, got you got you? And we're going to and we'll get
- 11:23into that out and we'll get into that a lot because we're going
- 11:26to, we're going to look at the pass game and, you know, wide
- 11:28receivers in the sky. All positions.
- 11:30But is there anything you'd ask him to do different?
- 11:34Like, you know, he's working with Brad Glenn which I think,
- 11:38you know, Brad, right. Because when you were at
- 11:41Greenville, he was at Western Carolina.
- 11:44Aram. I may have met him once or twice
- 11:48okay maybe I'm confusing you with somebody else.
- 11:51Have a conversation with but is there are some exactly?
- 11:57But is there any defensive coordinator at the high school
- 12:02level? But is there anything that you
- 12:04would be like you're you feel that some offensive quarterback
- 12:09coaches would be saying to him about some of those things where
- 12:14he is, you know, rolling away with some experience coaching
- 12:19offensive line. I played offensive line is
- 12:23sometimes I would look at stress the pocket, You know, I know the
- 12:28protection is not great, but sometimes just a little bit
- 12:32longer, instead of immediately rolling out moving unless that
- 12:36is their scheme and they're trying to rolling up, you know,
- 12:39Step Up make, you know, make Little Steps, move your feet
- 12:44enough and stay focused on what you need to downfield and not
- 12:49fake them as much about the pressure.
- 12:51I know it's tough because he probably started getting hit a
- 12:54lot of ways but he runs. I mean, He's not he's not a guy
- 12:57that seems to just they're all out of bounds or you know that
- 13:04which leads to another one sometimes.
- 13:06Sometimes you don't have to take it every point you know that
- 13:09that's the half yard may not be worth the huge shots.
- 13:12You don't take it kinds but you know what I mean?
- 13:17I think those things make a lot of difference in.
- 13:21I know we talked about it is in the sections and things like
- 13:23that. Yeah, where was it?
- 13:2730 and 32 games, he's played down 30 and 32 games in eight
- 13:31this season. Do you want to go?
- 13:33That is But a lot of what I've seen in interceptions he's
- 13:38thrown. It's, you know, there's been a
- 13:41couple balls and hit receivers and bounced out and somebody
- 13:44else catches, there's a lot of errant throws on the road.
- 13:49Things like that. And I think a lot of that can be
- 13:51fixed if he would just settle a little more in the pocket.
- 13:55Now, by no means am I quarterbacks coach?
- 13:58And they made they may have that set up a certain way, but those
- 14:01are the little things that I would be telling my defensive
- 14:04players, if we can get him, moving the ball is not going to
- 14:07be thrown quite as accuracy. They got chance, putting it
- 14:11bounces off hands without a shot.
- 14:13Take it. So let me ask this next then you
- 14:18talk. We just talked about the
- 14:19interceptions. He's now started three seasons.
- 14:23He started over 30 games, and I know we've mentioned it, some
- 14:29are off the hands, some are airing on the runs.
- 14:32But how much of his do you think it's mental now?
- 14:35And how much is mental? What do you think has been said
- 14:40to him about those throws? Because obviously 8 this year,
- 14:45obviously significantly better after game.
- 14:48One through twenty through quite a few.
- 14:51Go to you, but will become free. And that game, right?
- 14:57I thought it was more, but but but let's let me look that up,
- 15:00let me but after that. But what do you think, mentally
- 15:03when you when it's somebody that it's like you said want to gain
- 15:06how do you how do you coach to that?
- 15:08How do you make that regress to where it's not there anymore?
- 15:13While we look at that like you look at that and you think,
- 15:16okay, 30 and 32 games that looks like a game How many of you go
- 15:22back? How many of those games has?
- 15:24He had three or so in the game that'll cut that number of way
- 15:29back. You take that one game away from
- 15:32government school, like he allows it to bothering but so
- 15:34much which is a good thing. As long as he's paying attention
- 15:38to what's happening and learning why that happened?
- 15:43I've dealt with coached a lot of a lot of players I've seen some
- 15:48quarterbacks that have that short memory and it's Wonderful
- 15:51Faith, but I've had some quarterbacks who had a short
- 15:54memory and didn't think about why that happened and allowed it
- 15:58to happen again. So that's a big thing that I
- 16:03think you'd look at. I didn't spend too much time
- 16:05looking at that, but that would be a thing.
- 16:07I would tell him to focus on is looking at why these why they're
- 16:12happening, not necessarily criticizing that they are.
- 16:15But in a game like ODU, we're, we're pretty sure he had
- 16:18multiple intersections. You know what?
- 16:22What was something that was going on there?
- 16:24It was he moving us over the Lions, their long hair passes,
- 16:27that way. Well, there were couple
- 16:30progression from those well I remember that game there were a
- 16:33that game. It was like to on him.
- 16:38One on somebody else and one was a Hail Mary at the end of the
- 16:41half that don't I don't count that.
- 16:43We're all aware of that. So he had for that game and he's
- 16:46had this he's got nine this year total not a he's nine touchdowns
- 16:50nine interceptions. Now he can't even look in ten
- 16:56games and with a team that has a razor in with the team that has
- 17:01a razor thin margin. Like Virginia Tech this year
- 17:05that I can turn over a game does not help either.
- 17:07Want a game. And he's also, you know, we look
- 17:09at the Georgia Tech game. He had to he had three total
- 17:13turnovers to or fumbles. And three of those were in Prime
- 17:19field position where it was time to score.
- 17:22And one was, at the end of the game, when Tucker Holloway had
- 17:26set the team up, almost near Midfield, where you think it's
- 17:3025 yards and 35 seconds? You can get it feel a little
- 17:33Ranger in this game. Yep.
- 17:35All right, so give me this is your Honest assessment.
- 17:39In your opinion, are the Hokies bringing in another quarterback
- 17:43through the portal. Next year, I would I would think
- 17:48they need to be looking for something.
- 17:51Look, look for an upgrade. I'm not saying that you have to
- 17:56okay but you look for it if there if there's an obvious
- 18:00upgrade their then you have to consider it Wells has another
- 18:04year left, correct? Is it just one year left?
- 18:08You got two years left to your right?
- 18:10That he's got two years left. Yeah, he continues to show some
- 18:14improvement. See what another spring does.
- 18:16See how we really go. It's the brown kids done after
- 18:19this gear, right? Brown is done after this year,
- 18:22correct Brunson. After this, you see how he
- 18:26continues to progress, maybe bringing somebody into gives
- 18:29them a little more competition, will force them to improve a
- 18:33little bit more. He may improve more with with
- 18:36Little bit better protection in front of that.
- 18:41That's a big thing. He may have brewed with a solid
- 18:45Run game. One thing, I really noticed in
- 18:50that Duke game the other day, the first their first
- 18:53possession, their first place from school.
- 18:57They score, they run a play action and throw it down inside
- 19:01and noren coverage. And I mean, beat a man
- 19:05one-on-one coverage. Because everybody was so focused
- 19:07on that play action right from the beginning, the thought of
- 19:11that run game and getting it started froze them up long
- 19:16enough. To get enough separation.
- 19:20When you find out later that there's not a really big
- 19:23presence in their own game, then you can focus on what they're
- 19:26going to try to take away and that's putting pressure on him
- 19:28and making him throw it when he's not ready to put out.
- 19:32And I mean, I think there's several aspects that can be
- 19:35improved that they Grant Wheels may be fine in that position.
- 19:41But if there's an obvious way to upgrade then I don't see why you
- 19:45wouldn't get it. Nice.
- 19:51Just going to say Lavar, we appreciate you watching tonight.
- 19:53Good evening to you, sir. All right, let's go next.
- 19:57Let's look at the wide receivers and tight end and some of the
- 19:59pass game Concepts. Now, a lot of people are
- 20:02complaining about Tyler bones, lack of creativity.
- 20:07Now, hold on, I know what you're going to say, but let's just
- 20:11we'll get to that. Next, let me pivot it here but
- 20:14just from what you see, as far as the passing Concepts go, is
- 20:19he being creative with some of the The play designs out there.
- 20:25I can see and I see things that and I don't want anybody take
- 20:29this the wrong way. I see things that normal people
- 20:32watch the football, don't see 1000%, I wouldn't see it.
- 20:35That's why I talk to you about all the time.
- 20:40You can see certain ways they run for certain things that are
- 20:48ruined when they make a run play, things like that.
- 20:52So it's surveyor. But are you getting enough in
- 20:57other situations that you want them to go after that?
- 21:02Okay. Are you getting enough in the
- 21:04Run game to Warrant the pressure to come to it?
- 21:08So you can pull and throw the RPO and make it a packet okay?
- 21:11Okay I think your creativity is there okay but I don't think
- 21:17they can get to it yet. They're standing at the door
- 21:20trying to get in but the key won't go into lock on.
- 21:23No way. So so when you looked at the
- 21:26concepts and stuff, you say, well that's a creative play.
- 21:29That's your creative play. And I think it's going to go to
- 21:31what I'm going to ask next is probably why we don't see it.
- 21:35Someone like me or laymen that I look at it and say, well,
- 21:38thousand stupid play. We got - four yards and that's
- 21:41his. Do you think it is For him in to
- 21:46be creative to show the creativity.
- 21:48In the way I said it is basically the bread and butter
- 21:51is molded and the cheese is melted and butters melted.
- 21:55Yeah. we're at right now we're coming, you know, we got the
- 22:02butter on the bread, but the toaster heated up, Not to me.
- 22:08We wish you put that with you put the butter on the bread but
- 22:12if it ain't If we can't put the heat to it we can't toast
- 22:16anybody with it. It's true.
- 22:18And that's a big thing. I think we scrounged up here
- 22:22ingredients, but now we've got a now, we've got to put it all
- 22:25together to be ready to use it. And you have two bonds that all
- 22:32the time. You have to have something that
- 22:34you can sit on, you have to have that bread and butter that you
- 22:37can count on. And when you get it's different,
- 22:41it's a different business when you're sitting here watching the
- 22:43team and Go, they do this well and we got to stop it.
- 22:50And you're so focused on stopping that.
- 22:52Now all of a sudden that's sweet.
- 22:55Become even while we were running that power turns into we
- 22:59can pull it from that power because they figured out, they
- 23:02have to stop it. And I concur that slant off.
- 23:04Yo, and it back because that's a few, throwing down, hard and run
- 23:08kit and run, help, run support, and then that slant gets under
- 23:12that corner and we can break it for a 17, instead of two or
- 23:16three is No, that's a that's a good week that we do without
- 23:22asking. What do you think?
- 23:26Do you think that's what happened on Saturday that being
- 23:30one of the first plays, Randy knew the Duke safety, he is
- 23:33going. If he sees it early, he is going
- 23:35to crash and as soon as he crashed, it was Loft and wide
- 23:41open for a massive 50 plus yard touchdown, where it doesn't look
- 23:47even, even though the Hokies Run game is not, What?
- 23:50I mean to me it's it's the worst I've ever seen and I've been a
- 23:54fan close to 2 over 25 years but they still said well they're
- 23:58going to run it and usually you know what second down or early
- 24:01in the game they are going to run it they're not going to take
- 24:04a shot this early they don't ever do that and then all of a
- 24:06sudden route and that's what you're saying.
- 24:10Feels like we seen it game in and game out that try to
- 24:15establish the run early and it doesn't work out well.
- 24:19And we start with the Quick Pass and throwing the ball and doing
- 24:23things like that. Now, it doesn't help that you
- 24:25playing from behind and it's it's quicker to score his ways.
- 24:29Yeah. Rather than counting the outdoor
- 24:31yard at a time, but you have to, you have to focus on that run
- 24:36early. And I think Duke had the idea
- 24:39that what we see from their Scout take that if we can shut
- 24:43down that run early, they're going to make adjustments, to go
- 24:45to something else. And so, when they ran, that play
- 24:48action right there. Vancouver Tunes but the slow one
- 24:51down name and they took that shot and it was great.
- 24:55And then after that do kind of adjusted back and was like okay
- 24:58well we know they know they will go over its out, we've got to
- 25:01take control of that and maybe, you know, one guy difference.
- 25:05Maybe we can stop the run without that one guy to get this
- 25:09infection still Hill and and I think that was a big thing.
- 25:15All right, let me ask this, you know, watching the tapes and
- 25:20everything as far as the wide receiver tight in room goes, do
- 25:25you see any issues with lack of talent and does inexperience
- 25:30show to you? I think, I think the
- 25:36inexperience shows in ways, okay?
- 25:41I think, I don't know that there's a lot of talent.
- 25:44I see some Talent there, I see the way with some of those
- 25:47receivers move, there's definitely some Talent there,
- 25:52but there's some of its being taken away from those guys
- 25:58because It's focused on being now because there's nothing.
- 26:03There's no one thing that a defense have to sit down and go
- 26:06we got to take away and it turns out to be, okay, we don't know
- 26:13who's you would think, if you have any idea, if you don't have
- 26:16any idea who it's going to go to that, it would be easier to move
- 26:19it around. But the receivers don't know
- 26:22what either? And it's more of a big, it's
- 26:26kind of a, not a, that's what your dysfunction.
- 26:29But I mean there's an issue there, when you know, there's a
- 26:35tality behind those receivers. Hey, I've got to be here.
- 26:39I've got to make this point to do this or what we're getting
- 26:42and the hitting If you never know when it's coming, whether
- 26:46he's going to roll one way or the other, you'll have to check
- 26:49down things like that. It's hard to get that Rhythm.
- 26:52And that's a big thing. People also assume that you're
- 26:56so I see what you're saying by that, that you see the
- 26:59inexperience but what you also see is there's some guys that
- 27:04can do some stuff but because so much is not going the right way.
- 27:09Like if I told you, if you told me this team was averaging four
- 27:14and a half, Have a carry everything would look completely
- 27:18different because it would be like those teams are going to be
- 27:22so much worried about to run where you said you could just
- 27:24because you could just stood and Duke still.
- 27:29I'm assuming they lay guys back the rest of the game where they
- 27:32weren't in the picture, but they were still able to hold the
- 27:35Hokies to a minuscule minuscule amount of rush yards.
- 27:39Yeah. But you knew they had what to
- 27:42good linebackers. Yeah.
- 27:45You defensive interior lineman that can shut down Run game.
- 27:50And you know, you have to add an extra guy to those guys.
- 27:54You know, you trust it opens up something somewhere else.
- 27:58Once they knew that they could handle it with those interior
- 28:00guys, they could put the other guys in position to help other
- 28:05places and it makes it that much harder and I was not sure but
- 28:11I'm assuming to at the end experience too because Like I
- 28:15look through it the most experienced, guys, Caleb Smith.
- 28:17He's a six-year who was a walk-on.
- 28:18He got his, he got his papers three years ago, but lofton's a
- 28:23second-year guy, right? Who's who played it tight end as
- 28:27a true freshman out there. Making place that there's
- 28:30probably things that I can't see, you can't see but that
- 28:37linebacker. That corner knows exactly what
- 28:39to do. Say, if you know exactly what to
- 28:40do, where someone that young of the college level, it's a slow
- 28:44building block to, knowing he's doing this.
- 28:48I'm going to counter with this and it's not one second.
- 28:53I can do this. It's years.
- 28:55It's two or three years versus unless unless, unless they're
- 28:58special, let's just special. Yeah.
- 29:02I think I think they got two good upside with plenty of
- 29:08talent in blue and gospel but they're coming in from other
- 29:13programs so it's not I mean if you really look at it you got
- 29:18kids that have been there for a year or two or three freshmen.
- 29:22You got these kids even though they played years before
- 29:25somewhere else, still coming into this system and almost puts
- 29:29them back to the same level of learning everything.
- 29:31And as your pressure, and I mean that there wasn't a lot of time
- 29:37before handed to you got to spring with some of those guys
- 29:40coming in. And as you told me with with
- 29:43blue, there's been some other issues not, you know, some
- 29:48personal issues and that way that has cost them a little bit
- 29:51of time as well. And I mean, I completely
- 29:54understand going through some of that stuff myself, not in that
- 29:59aspect, but yeah, you know, So, it's focused back on those
- 30:05things, 100, 100 percentage and it stinks for him, because he
- 30:09did show out three years ago with temple.
- 30:11And I think a lot of us expected a lot of him, but considering
- 30:14the circumstances, it's amazing that kids play in this year.
- 30:18It's amazing. He's playing in them with
- 30:19Gosnell and let me ask that especially going and I didn't
- 30:25miss something. I didn't throw on there but I'll
- 30:27ask you. You introduced a new defensive
- 30:31scheme last year at your school. Now, this is, how long does it
- 30:37take in this is at any level of football, but luckily, you've
- 30:42coached High School Robbie close to 50 over 15 years now.
- 30:46Like, I remember you started 06, but you've also had players go
- 30:49to the college level and play. And I know you've had
- 30:52conversations When you had those conversations with those two
- 30:57guys who went to D1 programs, did you have?
- 31:00What did they ever say to you coach?
- 31:02I don't know if I'm gonna be able to get this because it's
- 31:05that level Stephen and I think a lot of us is me as a fan.
- 31:11I'm blessed. I got Siegel who played D3.
- 31:14I got you who've been coaching for our.
- 31:16I can I pick you all these years.
- 31:18So to me it's like when you say it's like this ain't no
- 31:22six-month fix because Talent update in skiing all this.
- 31:28But how long can you say you really want results?
- 31:31Check back here. From my expect to things, we put
- 31:38in a new defense this year. It's not tremendous amounts of
- 31:44different from what we ran last year.
- 31:47And just moving one guy around. Really, we went from we went
- 31:52from pretty much a for 25 to 33, so it's just moving one guy down
- 31:57the step. Just really all will change a
- 32:01lot of the same aspect. The way I took in when I had the
- 32:06young men who wanted with the NC State, when they sit his first,
- 32:09when he got his first Playbook there, he looked at me like how
- 32:13am I going to learn all those since you guys simplified me?
- 32:19I was like, you look at that thing and they've got 15
- 32:22different calls for you to go basically, two three different
- 32:27spots. That's all these.
- 32:31Okay. I mean you going to go see Gap.
- 32:35Be? Yeah.
- 32:36Maybe eight. Yeah.
- 32:39So make it that simple in your own mind and then you can feel
- 32:44the pain that now for me for our kids, I can start day one and I
- 32:50can have these three things I want to get done and if we get
- 32:54those three things done in a week, then I can move over there
- 32:57before. If we don't get those three
- 33:00things done is that week, then I continue to work on the next
- 33:04week. But the difference in what I do
- 33:08it compared to, to division one college football.
- 33:11I don't pick my guys. Now, I love my guys.
- 33:15Don't get that wrong, but I don't get to pick.
- 33:17They come out and they choose us.
- 33:19They choose the complaint. You know, what your scheme is?
- 33:23You know what you're looking for.
- 33:25You got to find a place to fit that, and you have to go by the
- 33:30same concept that I do in. If it's not here that we can't
- 33:34add more to it. But your leash is a little bit
- 33:37tighter, you know that. Oh yeah caller calling a little
- 33:40bit tighter so you feel a little bit more pressure that that
- 33:45makes a big difference. But I think I think all of them
- 33:52being in the these scheme and a new team and different things
- 33:57like that. And that doesn't that would
- 33:59explain any of them. None of them were on this thing
- 34:01right here. They were in Virginia Tech but
- 34:04this is a different Anything and everything from last year.
- 34:09So, I mean, it takes a little while to breathe and honestly to
- 34:12be to do some of the things as successful as they have,
- 34:16especially this week. I think it's a great thing that
- 34:19they work towards that and offense will catch up.
- 34:22Offense is a little offensive, a little more.
- 34:25Technically you have to do these paintings defense, you react got
- 34:30it, when it's right go to quickly react.
- 34:34Well, let's let's let's take. Continues on the offensive side
- 34:36of the ball and talk about the position you coached it goes up
- 34:40against every time and let's talk about the running back, the
- 34:43offensive line, the Run game concept.
- 34:45When you look at the struggles of the offensive line this year,
- 34:48especially in the Run game, the past Pro game has been, it's
- 34:52okay at times. Good.
- 34:53Sometimes bad with the Run game has not been good.
- 34:56What are you seeing? Especially you saw the Duke
- 35:00with. You was really ugly.
- 35:04My personal opinion, the way, I see it.
- 35:07And I see these offers environment, they do good
- 35:09things, don't get me wrong. Several of them, have good, some
- 35:13decent footwork. Some hand placement stuff is
- 35:17good. They're not quitting, which is a
- 35:21great thing in situations like this.
- 35:25That's what you really have to look at.
- 35:28When you really think about, okay?
- 35:31You think about the coaches that are on that staff and a type of
- 35:34offense, you know, that they're looking to run.
- 35:38It's really hard for me to see most of these offensive linemen
- 35:42fit you into that program. A couple of the younger ones may
- 35:47fit the mold and look a little a little more into it.
- 35:52But some of these older guys, you can really tell that there
- 35:57There is zone-based blocking scheme kids and they were
- 36:04recruited in zone-based blocking kids, which means they probably
- 36:08been playing in zone-based Rocking skis for years.
- 36:14And what we do is pouches for some muscle memory and it's hard
- 36:19to break it when it's been put in so long and to put them in
- 36:23something of a power scheme and the things that they're trying
- 36:25to do now it's very difficult to change some of those things up.
- 36:30So is that. So so that's affected are more
- 36:33than anything upfront. Which in fact, any and affects
- 36:37the running backs because walking is not bad And maybe the
- 36:42boss. Maybe the running backs are a
- 36:43little more, you know, zone-based, right stuff trying
- 36:47to find these when it's really not going to open in flow the
- 36:51same way that it used to be. All right, it's definitely your
- 36:54broom transition. So you kind of answer my
- 36:57question. I was last next about how much
- 36:58is it affecting Personnel. But I mean you know the name Joe
- 37:02Rudolph. You know how long he's had a
- 37:04house and you seen players, I mean heck you might have ran
- 37:07into him at some of the conference's you went to in the
- 37:09past but if I mean what can be done as a coach though because
- 37:13you walk in and you see Like, two guys are really three guys
- 37:22are really good for my scheme. One is green, he ain't will ever
- 37:25see the field one. Can see the field a little bit.
- 37:28One's Gonna Be on the field all the time, but what can you do
- 37:30behind closed doors? Because my assumption is, I
- 37:35can't change what I teach because these older guys are
- 37:39going to be gone in likely a year, but it wouldn't, you can
- 37:44you? Because you what you're saying
- 37:45to me is it's muscle memory and that's how we teach it.
- 37:49But rip it. Rip it, rip it.
- 37:50Rip it. You only get so much time in the
- 37:52spring. You only have so much time in
- 37:54the fall and then you're playing football games.
- 37:56Like what can eat? What do you think he's doing?
- 37:58Is it just the same old, same old or is he?
- 38:01You have two options when it really comes down to it, my
- 38:05mind, you have two options, you adjust your scheme, a little bit
- 38:09fit, what you have. Or you look at your personnel
- 38:14and go. These guys are going to be
- 38:16around long enough that they have to learn this.
- 38:20They weren't going to continue to use any college football.
- 38:24I think he's more into his school and they're going to,
- 38:28they're going to try to get these kids to understand that
- 38:30you learned that ski. So he's going to continue to
- 38:33pack. Okay.
- 38:35There's just like an old saying you talk about pounding the
- 38:39rock. Yeah okay he hit it.
- 38:41In the same spot is what he's doing.
- 38:44He's teaching his skiing and teaching his feet.
- 38:46He's, he's talking to them about their effort, continuing to make
- 38:51the noodle days, little progress, okay?
- 38:55And eventually that rocks, go squid, keeping it in the same
- 38:57product or you to go the route of.
- 39:00Well, this is what I got. I've got a five pound hammer and
- 39:04a chisel so I could try to make cracks in different ways and see
- 39:09if I can break it that way. But when you get the new guys
- 39:12either you really want to focus on your ski.
- 39:15Did you improve the guys that are going to be around for a
- 39:17year or so, It's one of those double-edged swords.
- 39:22You can keep forcing it in these kids go.
- 39:25Well, I don't see myself doing that and then they hit the
- 39:28portal in their out. Got it.
- 39:31You don't want to alienate those kids but you won't get continue
- 39:36to work with them when they're that.
- 39:38You have to love the ones that I got.
- 39:40And I got you. All right.
- 39:43Next thing, let me ask this just from a coaching perspective.
- 39:47Um obviously you know Malachi Thomas was out got hurt in Camp
- 39:51came back significantly late in the season, the primary spell
- 39:55gotten the guy who stepped up in his role Keeshond in probably
- 39:57the most explosive running back is now banged up.
- 40:02How does that affect think? I'm going to go Malik at the
- 40:05beginning of the season. And then losing king or King to
- 40:11come in your primary. How does that affect your
- 40:12playbook in your play calls? Because you saw Malachi Thomas
- 40:16running. Some of that tape.
- 40:17We're like okay, wow, he's good. And then it's like, well you
- 40:22don't get to have him for six and a half games.
- 40:24The smaller Blazer guy, he's going to have to be your
- 40:28primary. Like how does that change?
- 40:30And how does that how does it affect mentality of an offense
- 40:33to when, you know, you know? Hey, we're not playing with
- 40:36these guys, absolutely right? Mama's Little Things Can, you
- 40:40know, you can have a point one particular point, you know you
- 40:44want to be really good at you know, you want to do with, okay?
- 40:48There's 11 people out there that have to work together to make
- 40:51that play work. Where you take one back and it's
- 40:55been ruined this way and everybody gets used to that, it
- 40:58goes back to that muscle memory. Then suddenly that particular
- 41:02players, my bad, the next guy that comes in to run it as a
- 41:06step bastard. So he's a yarn ahead of this,
- 41:11put, you know, he's a half of your head of his puller.
- 41:15If he's a step slower, he's a half of urine behind this pole.
- 41:18So to pull the hits where the last the first guy might have
- 41:21hit right behind me puller. Now all of a sudden they pull
- 41:23her hits and a Defender has time to recover and squeeze back and
- 41:29people don't think about those little things like that.
- 41:32But the difference in the speed, the difference in the patient's,
- 41:35the difference in the pad level from running back to running
- 41:39back to change a lot of those things.
- 41:42Okay? And I'm going to hit the big
- 41:44deal. So I think that's what a lot of
- 41:46things. Okay, well, I've never heard.
- 41:50I mean, Brian, like I said it, but I've never heard someone say
- 41:52something like that. Basically, this guy, it takes
- 41:56four steps to get there. This guy is 3, but if the block
- 42:00isn't there well, everything changes and with Thomas he got
- 42:06banged up the end of spring but he was there for most of spring,
- 42:08he was there for most of all and I think it was about two weeks
- 42:11is what they're seeing before it happened two weeks before your
- 42:14first game. Mmmmm, he's out and I know that
- 42:16you start the game installation but if that's all you've been
- 42:19practicing with, I get what you're saying.
- 42:22Let's flip over to defense because you mentioned it a few
- 42:24minutes ago, when you're 100% right?
- 42:26The defense has taken strides this year, 59th and scoring 58th
- 42:31and total. Now where they really struggle,
- 42:34this Force turnovers 129, and only in only sacks where they're
- 42:39leading up to 80th in the country.
- 42:42And I want to look at the D line, you know?
- 42:44The leading for on the interior have only accounted for two and
- 42:47a half sacks this year. What do you see?
- 42:50They do well? And what do you think needs to
- 42:53change for those guys? I don't know how it was this big
- 42:59show, but it looks like they play well on your own up front.
- 43:05They can they can they can hold ground.
- 43:09Several of them take on double T's fairly well, they hold
- 43:13ground. They don't get blown way out of
- 43:15things. Now, they try to make a push for
- 43:19pass eruption. And things like that.
- 43:22You got one or two, that look like they make some pretty quick
- 43:24steps here and there, but there's not a lot of heavy
- 43:29penetration, not a lot of hard rushing to get, you know, to
- 43:37make things in the offensive Back Field.
- 43:39Change course, rush to get balls out.
- 43:43Things like that. And I think that's big upfront
- 43:47and by no means of that. Is that not a pretty cat?
- 43:50Talented group, Icy Tower middle, they just don't have the
- 43:57elite level high-end level, you know, penetration Rush type
- 44:03thing. They don't have this speed there
- 44:05it's it would pressure on the backfield so what you're saying
- 44:08is they're missing if that group had one Elite guy, just want to
- 44:13leave guy. He would make that group I would
- 44:16make them good to potentially Elite.
- 44:19Yeah, because you because what you're because what I'm hearing
- 44:21is they do good. They do things.
- 44:23Well, I'm assuming when you talk about like holding the runs and
- 44:27stuff, they play with leverage, they play in their gaps, they're
- 44:31not getting out of control which is sine of JC price doing good
- 44:34things? Absolutely.
- 44:36Okay, let's let's look at the edge real quick in, you know,
- 44:41garbage definitely the best Edge Defender.
- 44:43They've got he and After going after this year.
- 44:48Now, you've got Nelson in McRae, who were two younger, guys, have
- 44:51played a ton in 2023, a ton. How's that going to help them?
- 44:57But if it's two guys that, I mean, don't get me wrong.
- 45:01They're both their babies. McRae came in, from our sure,
- 45:05he's a freshman Nelson's of. They're both red shirt, freshman
- 45:09they're getting incredibly valuable.
- 45:12Experience at this point when it's in is something that you're
- 45:17not going to get from a brand new recruit.
- 45:21I mean, we're, we can, they could recruit 54 star defensive
- 45:26lineman, but they're not going to be able to match that
- 45:28experience of these kids are getting right now.
- 45:32And that to me, that's a big thing because there there is a
- 45:39difference and what these four and five-star recruits were
- 45:43seeing an offensive line and high school where one out of the
- 45:46five might be pretty good to where they're going to college.
- 45:51And now, all of a sudden, I'm getting double team by two of
- 45:54the best lineman I've ever seen in my life.
- 45:56Everybody against OB you. You know what I'm saying?
- 46:02Yeah, I mean we're not talking about Alabama Clemson.
- 46:05You do these big teams that you could run into.
- 46:08We're talking about the game during the schedule when people
- 46:11look at and go you should dominate them.
- 46:15To Lyman and we'll come back to this probably will be better
- 46:17than any two you've ever seen in high school.
- 46:21So that experience makes a world of difference, but adding
- 46:26something to that adding that ability to speed rush to get a
- 46:35guy that comes down the line flat and forces you to make that
- 46:40zone, read hand off quicker, things like that changes.
- 46:46The entire complexity of what you're going to see up front.
- 46:49If you got the time to take three steps Mometasone read
- 46:52before you pull it or hand it, then it makes it even easier
- 46:57than that decision is going to be correct.
- 46:59Or that could get decision will be more effective.
- 47:02If you got somebody screaming off that edge, that tackle.
- 47:04Can't block. Now I can take, but a step and a
- 47:07half, and I've got to make that decision now, and it better be
- 47:10the right. I got you a face make, most
- 47:14people only think of that of that rush in the pass game.
- 47:19But in the Run game, it's just as effective.
- 47:21But let me ask this, you know, the scheme pretty well, you know
- 47:26the scheme pretty well. McRae, Nelson getting their
- 47:31reps. If the pain kid who came from
- 47:33Nebraska's allowed a extra season, if you are defensive in
- 47:39at one of those bigger schools and you are stuck behind a James
- 47:43you know you're stuck behind and Will Anderson you're stuck
- 47:46behind some of the guys and even some of the smaller schools.
- 47:50Does this scheme defensive end wise?
- 47:54If Brent pry and JC pricing crif, more of called you, and it
- 47:58was one of your former students and said, I really think he
- 48:01could come here, do you think it lends itself to getting someone
- 48:07out of the portal to play that position next year for
- 48:12potentially a game changer cry? I think you, I think you could,
- 48:18because I think you're going to have a better chance of finding
- 48:20somebody that's going to make. An immediate impact there.
- 48:27Then you will trying to bring somebody in immediately.
- 48:31Now, don't get me wrong. I'm all for developing the young
- 48:33guys and up until recently. I've not been paying whatsoever
- 48:38before, but it's one of those things it's not going away.
- 48:43So we got to learn how to got to learn how to use it.
- 48:47And if it's going to benefit you, then you've it.
- 48:52Now, I'm not saying go out there and find that the kids as you
- 48:56know, he's in his fifth year, he redshirted once he's got one
- 48:59year, but to give us nine sacks this year.
- 49:04You could be losing development on somebody else with that.
- 49:08If there's a kid that's got three years left and you think
- 49:11he can really be affected that. Absolutely, I think it's a great
- 49:16thing to look at but they definitely need to go on that
- 49:19defensive front. Putting some pressure in that
- 49:22backfield and making things happen quicker than what's
- 49:25happening and it will change the entire complexity of those of
- 49:30those things. Also, let's flip now Now to a
- 49:33room that you had huge expectations for, that's a
- 49:37linebacker room. Are they meeting your
- 49:40expectations for this year? Meeting them?
- 49:46Some of them are exceeding them. There's guys, like we said, when
- 49:52we talked about this months ago in that preview, you know, we
- 49:56had guys that I thought were shoe into certain places and
- 49:59things, and I've seen several of them move around and play
- 50:02multiple different one. Several these guys at 40
- 50:06positions that I didn't think I didn't think they would put them
- 50:10in and have done pretty well with what they've been asked to
- 50:13do. I think hollifield has
- 50:18drastically improved, what is shown even more of what he can
- 50:23do? Maybe at the next level?
- 50:25That's going to open these up more for you.
- 50:29We know, he can faculty. I mean what's he got 5,000
- 50:32gallons in there? Seven years he's been in
- 50:34Blacksburg, so I'm like that but I think we we see him receiving
- 50:42coverage more. Now I feel like then we saw him
- 50:44before and he's pretty good. He's running harder to the edge
- 50:53showing some ability. Not trust me.
- 50:55I saw some of that when he was in high school he's a good
- 50:59friend of mine had to play against them and and state
- 51:02championship game at one point and that kid was they breast and
- 51:07I was excited that he was going to buy spread but I mean, you've
- 51:10got other guys back there and you've got I'm getting with
- 51:15these ladies, the artist. Get artist, who's the backup,
- 51:19Mike. He's done some good paint
- 51:22good-looking things when he's out there and I think there's
- 51:27some young guys that have been in and out at different places.
- 51:31I think the linebacker group has done well and I think part of
- 51:35what they've done, well is because they know up front, that
- 51:39they can hold things against the Run game and allow them to play
- 51:43free. There's times where I think we
- 51:47could use the linebackers a little more.
- 51:51Good to rush that back to you and make those points but that
- 51:56they they focused on using them the way that they have no
- 52:01feeling whole scraping over those kind of Concepts, and it
- 52:04may just be a part of the way they're trying to progress their
- 52:08defense and teach it is get those basics in first.
- 52:12Then we can get a little more exotic.
- 52:14We bringing things because we saw prop do some, some different
- 52:19Blitz looks and is it can state with a lot of linebackers
- 52:25Michael Parsons and in, but that doesn't have that kind of guide
- 52:30you And so I think he's they're focusing very much on working.
- 52:35The good fundamental Basics and it's really shown at linebacker.
- 52:39Okay, toes and then makes a lot of sense this year, especially
- 52:45you got dachshund Tisdale right there.
- 52:47The old guys Tisdale was out for a well, Tuesday.
- 52:53I was doing well. You heard what happened, right?
- 52:55You had heard the story. Yeah, which is the stupidest
- 52:58thing turns himself in, let's give you five games up.
- 53:02Okay, well, yeah, he might come back.
- 53:06Maybe he leaves. Maybe he doesn't because he does
- 53:08have a year of covid Eligibility, but I'm wondering
- 53:11what you're saying is, is what happened this year?
- 53:14I think artists has eligibility still doing, Ferguson has Ellen.
- 53:17There's a lot of guys who Jaden Keller, who are young and in
- 53:22those positions in is what your feel like what you're saying is
- 53:26he's not going crazy. Is he sending them sometimes on
- 53:29a blush? Yes.
- 53:30But it's like I'm If I drill the fundamentals, I don't need to
- 53:34worry about that next year. That'll be ingrained then I can
- 53:37take the next step. Now let me ask this feels like
- 53:40that group. Fundamentally is going to get
- 53:44better every week and a lot of them have the potential to still
- 53:47be there next year. Yep.
- 53:49Oliver really don't know what he's gonna get.
- 53:51He's the only one gone. He's the only one going.
- 53:54Now let me ask those the the saying the, the Sam linebacker
- 53:59group and we've seen Lawson Jenkins and Walker.
- 54:06They've all done. Really good things down there.
- 54:08Yes. How to now just you as a coach
- 54:11when you see they're doing really good on this outside.
- 54:14Linebacker spot. Do you want to say and your the
- 54:19DC? But I know you've got to talk to
- 54:20Dave where it's like listen they all three play.
- 54:22Good that can I fool somebody to backer?
- 54:24Can I pull some to them? How tough is that?
- 54:30And do you think At least one of those guys next year, if not
- 54:36competing will be a death piece at another linebacker spot in
- 54:39the way from the same position. I think what you're seeing now
- 54:44is just being three, very good players that that position in
- 54:48the future. And if they turn out to be
- 54:52three, very good football players.
- 54:55That are very good above several others.
- 54:58Then you find a way to put all three of those on the field at
- 55:01the same time. If two of them turned out to be
- 55:06really good football players in that position, maybe you have a
- 55:09good rotation of that position. There's all kinds of different
- 55:13ways. We always look at things is we
- 55:16want the best 11 men on the feet.
- 55:19And if that means I've got three of them at one position and
- 55:23there I put those three on the field.
- 55:26It's better than other two. That I have, then I find a way
- 55:29to get into that position in the assembly.
- 55:31Help. Got it, got it, got it.
- 55:35Let's put the same body. Let me flip the safety.
- 55:47When you start checking out the tape on this is this room
- 55:51playing like and I know there's some experience there but
- 55:53there's some young guys there. But is that room playing?
- 55:55Like it's the first time. A guys ever coached in Khalid
- 55:58college football in Pearson Prelude, I think in some ways a
- 56:07little bit okay they're being very cautious with some things,
- 56:12they're allowing him, I hate to learn along with those safeties.
- 56:16Okay? It's undoubtedly.
- 56:19The DVD section of that defense in the youngest group of all
- 56:24correct. Safety.
- 56:29No Corner. Yes, definitely.
- 56:31The one of the corners. Yes.
- 56:33For Sure, we'll talk about him in a moment.
- 56:35Like you said, you have a, you have a first-year coach at that
- 56:39level. Now he played a lot of years and
- 56:43he was considered a times. I considered him to be a, kind
- 56:48of a coach on the field working with what Pro players anyway,
- 56:53but he's learning. He's burning powder, turns right
- 56:56along with them, learning how to beat those to that position.
- 57:01And I think there is a bond and chemistry that's coming with
- 57:06that and you can see progression from the beginning of the
- 57:09season. The map there are still some
- 57:12things that probably need to be cleaned up and worked on but
- 57:15there's plenty to be cleaned up and work going from top to
- 57:18bottom. Both sides are football.
- 57:20Absolutely absolutely it's just a progression that we're seeing
- 57:27both of them at the same rate as making it.
- 57:31A lot. Yep.
- 57:33In Fort Pierce. The next year, only one guy's
- 57:35not coming back. That probably is that's
- 57:37tomorrow, Connor who it probably is, you know, his that guy, his
- 57:40best safety, but I get to your point likely next year when he
- 57:46speaks because he went through this year with all those guys.
- 57:49They're gonna listen. They're going to do what he says
- 57:51which is awesome. All right, now he's running,
- 57:54he's running defensive stuff from coach Frey.
- 57:58He's learning his defense of stuff for from more.
- 58:02Yeah, he's burning stuff from. I guarantee you coach, Jose is
- 58:08helping them with some things and how to coach, I mean, that's
- 58:11a process in itself is learning how to coach me down?
- 58:15Because one of the biggest things, and we tell our coaches,
- 58:19which coach with Becky. And I do a lot of coaching of
- 58:22our coaches, because some of our coaches were young and
- 58:25experienced, come over older and Since they're just willing to
- 58:29help but we have to coach them on how to coach, you know, they
- 58:34may have clean anything. We tell guys all the time,
- 58:37especially some of our former players going to get into
- 58:40coaching. Listen these guys that you're
- 58:44coaching may not be as good as you.
- 58:48So you have to teach them, the fundamentals.
- 58:51Participates, no one helped, most of them every play.
- 58:55I've hated so far and probably be better than what I was.
- 58:58Because I was not a very good point.
- 59:01There's not a lot of athletic ability here.
- 59:04There was a lot of intellectual ability for the game.
- 59:07I'm not a lot of athletic ability.
- 59:10And I have to learn how to teach those guys, the pieces that I
- 59:15know, well and related to what they do well and I think he's
- 59:20learning how to do that. And it does, the more coach
- 59:23Prelude, learns, how to do that. The more he'll be able to relay
- 59:27and the quicker, you'll be able to see that progression.
- 59:29Take place. Got it.
- 59:31Let's talk about Derrick Jones room here.
- 59:33And let me talk the cheetah, the cheetah, the cheetah, someone
- 59:38you've had some run-ins with when he coach down at Duke and
- 59:41he, I think he had your territory, but from a defensive
- 59:44coordinator standpoint first, when you lose a number one
- 59:48corner, like Dorian strong and Dorian strong is a well rounded
- 59:52corner. Is he extra athletic?
- 59:54He's got some athleticism. Is he graded out?
- 59:58But it's like there is no one weak point in door in Strong's
- 1:00:00game. When a guy like that goes down,
- 1:00:04and you're sitting there Robbie, and you're getting those game
- 1:00:07plans together. How much does that hinder?
- 1:00:09What it is? Of coordinator, can call. hey,
- 1:00:13it's big when you when you got a guy you know you can count on
- 1:00:17and you know I don't have to worry about I can take me down
- 1:00:23away from the office with this and I don't have to think about
- 1:00:28that again. So now I don't have that piece
- 1:00:33and now that's another thing that I got to take from the
- 1:00:36offense and figure out how to take it away.
- 1:00:38Now I have been very impressed with watching the young man that
- 1:00:44they brought in for him and Monsour delayed.
- 1:00:48Oh, you ain't Delaney. Delaney He has been pressure.
- 1:00:56But there were some, there was the moment, especially the Duke
- 1:01:00game. He still shows that he is a true
- 1:01:02freshman, he's like 90 years old, he gets, he Gap.
- 1:01:07There. There's, there's definitely
- 1:01:10things that come into that progression.
- 1:01:12I was just talking about, but the patients and the things like
- 1:01:16that because in high school, you could be the best player on the
- 1:01:21field and you can make a mistake and make up for it real quickly.
- 1:01:24Because the Prosper, music was not the Four Star Property when
- 1:01:30you get to this college level everybody across from you.
- 1:01:33The best gal. Dirty.
- 1:01:35So, even those little mistakes look, big herbs and I mean he's
- 1:01:41going to get better with those things in here, but he's shown
- 1:01:45enough fundamental things for me, as a true freshman that
- 1:01:49they've got somebody in the next year or so that they're going to
- 1:01:54be upset. He's on that.
- 1:01:57We don't have to worry about that for the love it.
- 1:02:00Love it. Love it.
- 1:02:04You mentioned it a few minutes ago and I'm going to just kind
- 1:02:07of get your take on the portal and you gave me your take.
- 1:02:12Just this is just your guess, this is just what you seen and
- 1:02:17you know, I know you don't know the roster as good as Brian and
- 1:02:20I do because you've got your own roster, you've got two minutes,
- 1:02:23I'm like yeah and it's not fantasy.
- 1:02:25It's all right. But just looking at what you saw
- 1:02:32on the field, knowing it's a lot of young players coming through
- 1:02:36that kind of impressed. You the most yeah how many how
- 1:02:41many how many Guys in the portal.
- 1:02:42Do you think Tech should take? Not will take but should It's
- 1:02:51going to sound very neat but I think you take as many as you
- 1:02:55need to to improve in areas that you have to and I know that
- 1:03:02sounds very cliche very. Let's go speaking.
- 1:03:07Yes, unless somebody's visited North world's tomorrow, that's
- 1:03:09why he's saying that tonight Yahoo's visit sometimes.
- 1:03:11Visit you are more than welcome come.
- 1:03:14See us it's gonna be cold. Bring a coat.
- 1:03:22If there's five pieces there that there are people in their
- 1:03:27portal, that feel five needs and can get on that field in the
- 1:03:32spring and next fall and play and make a difference.
- 1:03:36Then you take five if there's eight, there is three of them
- 1:03:42can make a difference immediately and then five, Could
- 1:03:47possibly feel some death row for us.
- 1:03:50Maybe you take six. It's good.
- 1:03:53Eh it's I really feel like and we were talking about it before
- 1:04:00we went on about the recruits and the class and the things
- 1:04:04like that if they feel very strongly about the recruiting
- 1:04:08class and the guys going to bring it in focus on those guys.
- 1:04:13But if you still feel like you have a hole there, use that for
- 1:04:17again, like I said, I wasn't a huge fan of it to begin with,
- 1:04:21but it's not going anywhere. So we might as well we're not.
- 1:04:25It will jump in and take what we came.
- 1:04:28And I mean, if it makes it any better, it makes the team medic.
- 1:04:33Awesome. Alright.
- 1:04:35Okay. For about 45, 15.
- 1:05:03Robbie before we get deep and we get into Know, The Enemy

- 1:05:31forward slash free Dash website, Dash report.
- 1:05:34Now back to the episode All right, and we are back and now
- 1:05:39it's time for Know The Enemy Liberty.
- 1:05:41Let's start on the offensive side of the ball Robbie and
- 1:05:44let's start with Jonathan Bennett the quarterback.
- 1:05:48He was a three-star composite when he came out of Somerville
- 1:05:51High School in Summerville South Carolina.
- 1:05:54Primarily mostly G5 offers from him kind of took over the role.
- 1:05:59When Charlie Brewer went down early in the season and he's
- 1:06:02excelled thus far this year, you know, over 1,300 yards, you
- 1:06:06know, 12 touchdowns to nine interceptions, 154 yards,
- 1:06:11rushing, what are you seeing? When you looked at his tape?
- 1:06:18For this game. He's he is a, he's very
- 1:06:24noticeable. I would say the quarterback
- 1:06:27position and and seeing would coach breathe and Liberty has
- 1:06:32done in many other areas. He a lot of things run through
- 1:06:38that quarterback and especially what he done in Liberty with
- 1:06:41Malik Willis last year and who's I think with the Titans mail,
- 1:06:46which I know, Jason was more than excited.
- 1:06:48They were talking about the Titans right here.
- 1:06:53The big thing was he had an uncommon amount of experience
- 1:06:57playing behind Willis last year in filling, in some games and
- 1:07:03playing some with some of the research and stuff.
- 1:07:05I did looking at it, he played in nine different games last
- 1:07:09year behind the week Willis. So those are big things and he's
- 1:07:17got, he's got a very wild arm moves around very well in the
- 1:07:22pocket. He can make things happen with
- 1:07:25it, with his feet, with his, with his throwing ability, that
- 1:07:29there was a one-point on them. There was one point in the game
- 1:07:35against UConn, he's running towards the sidelines from
- 1:07:40pressure. He sees the guy in front of him,
- 1:07:43he just flips it over in front of it and they gained 67 yards
- 1:07:47out of what he was, just trying to get the sidelines and not
- 1:07:49lose anything. I mean now as a quarterback
- 1:07:53sometimes that can be a little advice.
- 1:07:57Not everybody can do with Patrick Holmes, doesn't switch
- 1:08:00hands and throw it and it just for fun.
- 1:08:04But those are the kind of things that he does offer and you have
- 1:08:07to watch out for the. One thing I did notice is a
- 1:08:121-point difference. Score on his, you car and he
- 1:08:14gets hit, he gets taken down one time and I don't know what they
- 1:08:18call on the ball or what, but he comes up breathing hard, he's
- 1:08:22holding his ribs, he comes out and they bring in another
- 1:08:25quarterback. Number seven.
- 1:08:28And I'm going to tell you what. It's been, it's a really good
- 1:08:34quarterback and really got. You got to keep an eye out.
- 1:08:38It's not what happens to him. And Stephen comes in that man's
- 1:08:42a threat. He throws the ball.
- 1:08:44Well he runs well, and I didn't want to get a lot of use to him
- 1:08:48because I think Bennett is the guy that they're they're using
- 1:08:51and going with. But if you see that next
- 1:08:54quarterback, come in. There's a reason behind it.
- 1:08:57Is that kids got some athletic ability.
- 1:08:59Yeah it's probably Kate on Salter.
- 1:09:00You're talking about there. That's what it was.
- 1:09:03Yeah salty. Yeah he's definitely more of a
- 1:09:05running thread to and Bennett and Probably their quarterback
- 1:09:09of the future. Honestly, probably the
- 1:09:11quarterback of the future. Unless unless Hugh decides to go
- 1:09:14to Auburn. Liberty's basically in her
- 1:09:21backyard. True.
- 1:09:23We all know that it Liberty wants to keep him back.
- 1:09:27And as long as he's not chasing, the national championship
- 1:09:30Liberty, keep paging him just as much as all the did he?
- 1:09:34That's true. But it's the lawyer man.
- 1:09:35Is the Lord. Let's talk about the running a
- 1:09:38little bit next. Let's, um, I know you mentioned
- 1:09:40to me, she drove Louis is out. He was out against UConn, likely
- 1:09:44going to miss this week. But you know what?
- 1:09:46And he'd been their primary backup.
- 1:09:48But when him out with the, the primary guide a day, Honor, who
- 1:09:53is absolutely tearing it up before he got hurt against
- 1:09:55Arkansas. Yeah, they bring in a third
- 1:09:58string, running back, third string running back.
- 1:10:01TJ, green, TJ, green and originally committed to Utah.
- 1:10:06Out of Chandler, High School in Chandler.
- 1:10:08Arizona was a three-star composite 3, star overall 247
- 1:10:14Sports. And to me, I like how in him.
- 1:10:17If he kicks the guy, you normally feel good about the
- 1:10:19guy. And I tell you, I mean, Robbie,
- 1:10:23I mean he put up numbers, he put up numbers against.
- 1:10:28He was the first string running back.
- 1:10:29There are strong and he goes up and goes from 119.
- 1:10:34He was believed rusher for the team last year.
- 1:10:37Running back. He was one of their best options
- 1:10:41at running back. Last year, what does that say
- 1:10:43for the other two? If you're leading rusher for
- 1:10:46last year, on a team to did, as well as they did is now the
- 1:10:49third option that don't play well that don't play well for
- 1:10:54Keys, got to figure out how to shut down the road, not at all.
- 1:10:57So what are you seeing from? What are you seeing from him?
- 1:11:00Just as far as playing he give you.
- 1:11:04He has an explosive dual threat out of the backfield.
- 1:11:08He can hit holes, he take off. He gets to the second level
- 1:11:11quickly. He'll attack your safeties in
- 1:11:15the hole opens enough but he can he can be the guy out today.
- 1:11:20Is that you step down and, and make moves and get out of here.
- 1:11:28He's a DJ Greener. Is going to be a guy to watch.
- 1:11:32He's going to be a guy to keep your eye.
- 1:11:33I don't it. Every every chance the big thing
- 1:11:36is they He runs the ball. Well, he's quick, he hits hole.
- 1:11:43He finds his scenes but it almost looks like Liberty
- 1:11:47doesn't use it as much as they could.
- 1:11:50They could literally hand that ball off and grind that guy and
- 1:11:56and be very similar to what we saw at pit and hit it, hit it,
- 1:12:01hit it, then it breaks huge. But it's like it's Ricky gets
- 1:12:08difficult for you seven or eight or nine, and they go, okay, that
- 1:12:11was good. Let's try to swing it out to a
- 1:12:14receiver and see what Get out there in space.
- 1:12:17Well, it's you'll find out minute.
- 1:12:18It's not a bad option either. Well, I was getting ready to
- 1:12:21say. There is a reason why they don't
- 1:12:24do that and he is name is Demario, Douglas.
- 1:12:28He is only five foot eight. He is only 165 pounds.
- 1:12:33He was not rated coming out of high school down in
- 1:12:36Jacksonville, Florida. He had some offers from
- 1:12:38Gardner-Webb UAB Florida Atlantic and he finally landed
- 1:12:42at Liberty Robbie before I get into the that's I'm going to let
- 1:12:46you break down. Exactly what you see on him.
- 1:12:51You could you can see our notes. I know you've been looking at.
- 1:12:54What's the very first thing I have on their notes about this
- 1:12:56guy now the old dr. Dre song, explosive explosive.
- 1:13:02This Gap is there. Do.
- 1:13:04What? All they can throw it to and
- 1:13:07down field? They can throw it to him on
- 1:13:09strings. He's better return me this.
- 1:13:13This young man is, Very tough to take down his face.
- 1:13:20He moves in and out of things. Well, he moves his, he he's very
- 1:13:24quick on his routes. He adjusts his Route, 12, and
- 1:13:29once he catches the ball, that's just half of it.
- 1:13:32But I mean, you've got to be, you got to be ready to take care
- 1:13:35of him after that or he should return five yard, catch into a
- 1:13:4125 year old passenger hurt. I mean, he's exposed quickly,
- 1:13:47he's not very big. It looks like he's been wrapped
- 1:13:50in butter. There's some teams over the
- 1:13:52season they have had a very hard time keeping hands on you well
- 1:13:58and it shows two men. It shows cuz I mean in 10 games,
- 1:14:02he's got eight hundred thirty yards, he's at over 14, half
- 1:14:06perception, he's got six touchdowns and last week, they
- 1:14:09got involved in the running game where he broke a huge one for a
- 1:14:12touchdown. And with their style office.
- 1:14:18And I mean, they're running, they're running a pretty Pretty
- 1:14:22high tempo. Power spread right deal.
- 1:14:27You know, they can hit you hard with the with the Run game
- 1:14:29inside. Do you get a guy like this?
- 1:14:32You can pop out and throw it to him and with their Tempo, the
- 1:14:36way they don't line up and run for you move quickly.
- 1:14:39You got to try to find it every foot.
- 1:14:41It will seize it. You know, when we call the wire
- 1:14:45dizi, the outside the car outside guy.
- 1:14:47Now the next point he's in, it's locked, you know, he's number
- 1:14:51three in a trip. Next thing, you know, He's the
- 1:14:54backfield, he's on it, on the receiver side and empty
- 1:15:01formation and he jetting across. I mean, you got to find it for
- 1:15:05you in and play out. He's moving around.
- 1:15:08It makes it tough. Makes it really tough on the
- 1:15:11defense to have to find somebody that explosive while you're just
- 1:15:15trying to get everybody lined up.
- 1:15:17Because of their Tempo that it's going to be a big thing.
- 1:15:20It's going to be tough. All right.
- 1:15:23I know you wanted to hit two more players on the offensive
- 1:15:26side of the ball. For we talk about the scheme and
- 1:15:28that's the tight ends, Austin, Austin, Henderson number. 83
- 1:15:33Jerome Jackson. Number 88 Henderson was
- 1:15:35originally a Minnesota commit in Jackson, is at a Fort Worth
- 1:15:40Texas. Basically super under the radar.
- 1:15:45Exactly? Like what do you like they do?
- 1:15:47Do they do they are they on the field?
- 1:15:48The same time or they kind of interchangeable?
- 1:15:52but me, when you look at them, you know, looking at Virginia
- 1:15:58Tech they both have kind of a blue brick kind of feel.
- 1:16:04Okay, thank God won't reach. You can line them up in the
- 1:16:07backfield as the HVAC like block, very well, both of them
- 1:16:11walk very well, but they've also got the leaked inability to line
- 1:16:15up out wide as a receiver. And the biggest thing with that
- 1:16:19is they're blocking well then field for those screens that the
- 1:16:24throne Douglas, they're blocking well, inside to help the Run
- 1:16:28game but suddenly okay. And we're talking about a
- 1:16:33defense is looking at personal mail, okay?
- 1:16:35We got two tight ends on the field.
- 1:16:37Well, as, as a defensive coordinator, they got two tight
- 1:16:43ends on the field. They're probably going to run
- 1:16:45something powerful inside. Well they do, they line up two
- 1:16:49tight ends, they run a power look, well then they Tempo.
- 1:16:52Get back to the ball and then they didn't change your body on
- 1:16:55the field which means I can't rotate anybody off the field or
- 1:17:00onto the field defensively and that Tempo.
- 1:17:02But now they're 5y well what happened to those two tight
- 1:17:05ends? Well they're split out wide or
- 1:17:08just get a receiver that there is what we need.
- 1:17:12That's a big thing. When you can take two guys that
- 1:17:16you're set with your defense to go against the power and next
- 1:17:19thing, you know, they're out wide and they're on a five or
- 1:17:22Seaver set and things like that. That make sense Tempo a lot more
- 1:17:26dangerous when you can make that many different formations with
- 1:17:29the same, guys that look like a power set.
- 1:17:33Now, I've got, you know, four defensive linemen and three true
- 1:17:37linebackers in there. I've got two linebackers.
- 1:17:39Trying to cover receipts I don't work.
- 1:17:42It ain't it. You better work.
- 1:17:44So what else is it about this? What else is it about?
- 1:17:48The scheme of Hugh, freeze, obviously, it's the up-tempo
- 1:17:51spread its the having these. I wouldn't say interchangeable,
- 1:17:54but guys, he can take from being at a church or being on a wing
- 1:17:59to pulling back. What else do you see on this
- 1:18:01offense? Those things that they do and
- 1:18:05they and they do well, they have the guys that can play well in
- 1:18:09space and they can move they can run.
- 1:18:11It back out to one side, have Douglas on the other.
- 1:18:14You have to respect that on both sides.
- 1:18:17You have to find those guys in that Temple process in turn that
- 1:18:22makes your Defense Act to simplify a little bit more to
- 1:18:26make sure that those calls are easily transferable easily
- 1:18:32translatable and set up quickly so that you can you sound as
- 1:18:37possible and I think that's I think that's good present.
- 1:18:41Quite a challenge is some aspects and how many now it
- 1:18:47allows them to be up-tempo and it allows them to put some
- 1:18:52yardage on the field quickly. And in many ways it's happened
- 1:19:01to me before it can also turn against you very quick because
- 1:19:05if you get into that Tempo and that defense finds a way to kind
- 1:19:10of shut those squeeze down. Then all of a sudden your
- 1:19:13offense is on the field for about 17 seconds of game clock
- 1:19:17and your defense is on the field.
- 1:19:19You know 100 please and it away ioudiy pants down.
- 1:19:24Got it. When we talk about a defense,
- 1:19:26I'll talk a little bit more about about that but thank you.
- 1:19:30If Virginia Tech and find a way to slow that Tempo even though
- 1:19:34they're turned to run it or shut down the things that they like
- 1:19:39to do with that Tempo, it's going to put more pressure on
- 1:19:42their defense which in turn will help that softens.
- 1:19:44I think I got it. All right, no matter what they
- 1:19:47can get that done. All right, well, let's flip over
- 1:19:50to defense and let's let's talk about a couple of these guys
- 1:19:53over here. Let's talk about the guy who's
- 1:19:55been absolutely lighting up. The A statistical data this
- 1:20:00year. And that is the defensive end.
- 1:20:03Darrell Johnson, 64 235 pounds. A Juco out of a sa College up in
- 1:20:08new, in Brooklyn, New York. And I'm sure you had a fun time
- 1:20:12watching this kid. Robbie seven sacks ATM half
- 1:20:16tackles for loss or T3. Total tackles.
- 1:20:20He's also forced a fumble, multiple pass deflected.
- 1:20:25Multiple fumble. Recoveries Tell me, tell me how
- 1:20:29fun was it watching this kid and what stood out for you?
- 1:20:32He's back disruptor that I've talked about the tech needs to
- 1:20:35look for He's he's an athlete but he's not Elite World.
- 1:20:42Beaten, is Scott's really good? He's not a, he's not somebody
- 1:20:49that people are looking at right now going.
- 1:20:53Will consider him with a top 3 round bracket.
- 1:20:58But statistically, he's putting up numbers.
- 1:21:00Yes, he is. He's a disruptive, he's forcing
- 1:21:03backfield to make decisions quickly, whether it's throw the
- 1:21:07ball, when they're not ready, whether it's the hand that zone
- 1:21:10read or the or the different things there, before they're
- 1:21:13ready having to pull it and make it throws on the rpos quicker
- 1:21:17than they do. That's why he's getting class,
- 1:21:20deflections, he's in there, they make the wrong read on his own.
- 1:21:24He's there to tackle it. That's where the top.
- 1:21:27Tackles for loss or coming from, I mean he's a disruptive, he's
- 1:21:31doing things fundamentally way. He sets The Edge tremendously,
- 1:21:36well, which helps them with those tackles for losses.
- 1:21:39Well, I mean, he'll he'll stick your stick your hand in there in
- 1:21:43a hurry and nobody's getting outside of his shoulder.
- 1:21:47If you try to run his own or stretch to his age, he's got it
- 1:21:53covered. That's your type of player that
- 1:21:55he had, he's got some very long arms, got a good reach and those
- 1:22:00things helped him a lot. It's helped him a lot with
- 1:22:06knocking balls down to the going to check downs and things like
- 1:22:09that as well. So I mean he's definitely going
- 1:22:12to be a niche, you on that edge. But the good part is I don't
- 1:22:16think Virginia Tech's, not a team that looks to be running.
- 1:22:20A lot of ads, run plays a lot of stretches and, and wide zones
- 1:22:26and things like that. So his outside shoulder ability,
- 1:22:30which is going to help him. Most when Wells, Trying to roll
- 1:22:34out the pro bowls. I think that's where he'll
- 1:22:38you'll cause some trouble in enforcing Grant could try to
- 1:22:43throw snowballs. Maybe a little sooner than he
- 1:22:45looked for having to adjust his arm angle and make those balls,
- 1:22:49go around a little bit and that we know that can happen with
- 1:22:52Grant, the way this year's going.
- 1:22:54And Brian, let's talk about his running mate.
- 1:22:56They're on the defensive line as well Dennis.
- 1:22:59Oh, so jitta from Missouri City Texas.
- 1:23:02Originally a commit to you. A mass way back in 2000 and
- 1:23:092017. So he enrolled in 2018.
- 1:23:15So he's played Collegiate football, quite a few years.
- 1:23:18And so, really, he's 22. 23 years old came through here,
- 1:23:23obviously via the portal 61 about 300 pounds, good size,
- 1:23:30what's the tape showing on him? He is, he is a crawl.
- 1:23:36Disrupt full force the double team's defensive interior
- 1:23:42defensive linemen. They like the volume up in a
- 1:23:48gap. Over the guard, enforce the
- 1:23:51center, to have to help with him.
- 1:23:55Because obviously, the tackle has her hands full opposite of
- 1:23:59that. With, with Vicki Johnson, makes
- 1:24:03he forces double team, which allows has Linebackers to move
- 1:24:08freely and make tactics make points.
- 1:24:12Both of their defensive tackles do pretty good job of forcing
- 1:24:16the attention of the offensive line and that makes it a lot
- 1:24:21easier for for your linebackers to move freely.
- 1:24:24That's one thing that I feel like we did well here this year
- 1:24:28was that defensive line Force? Double teams and places of our
- 1:24:31linebackers wrapped up fact and I that's a good fundamental to
- 1:24:35do with With the defense and I think they're pretty good at it.
- 1:24:40But but 90 I'm not even trying to put that last name out there.
- 1:24:47Dennis, Dennis, Dennis, Dennis, the Menace.
- 1:24:51That is a good way to put it, he plays low, he plays with good
- 1:24:56pad level, it's hard to move out of the Gap even with a double
- 1:24:59team. So if you're trying to pound it
- 1:25:02into a gap, then He's spilling it and your linebackers are
- 1:25:09coming on, either side of it to shut other things down.
- 1:25:13And with offensive line that has not shown a lot of consistency
- 1:25:18of making push and clearing things out in some of those
- 1:25:23areas. He's going to be, he's going to
- 1:25:25be some trouble up front and those linebackers will be coming
- 1:25:29pretty quickly. There's no reason why they have
- 1:25:31it in tackles for loss and playing a lot of people's Back
- 1:25:34Field that they do. Oh yeah.
- 1:25:36And he himself I mean he's got ten and a half tackles for loss,
- 1:25:3966 saxo you. You're talking about him being
- 1:25:42disruptive and being able to hold the gaps in He's obviously
- 1:25:45giving up in there, making plays as well.
- 1:25:48And you know, let's flip and talk about the linebackers
- 1:25:50because you wanted to kind of talk about all three of them.
- 1:25:53You got, you got Mike Smith, he was a Juco transfer from
- 1:25:57Mississippi Gulf Coast hiring Dupree enrolled in Liberty way,
- 1:26:01back in 2018. So he's a fifth year guy and
- 1:26:04then I'm Ed Walker at a Warner Robins Georgia.
- 1:26:08I mean, the kid was a two-star coming out of high school, he's
- 1:26:13the class of 21. One is his only his second
- 1:26:16season, he's a redshirt freshman.
- 1:26:18And this group in general, I know you talked about Robbie
- 1:26:21made mentioned like all these guys have 40 plus tackles
- 1:26:24playing linebacker Robbie, they got 21 and a half tackles for
- 1:26:28losses group. Yeah, I mean and a Lobby
- 1:26:31laughing these three guys. A lot of that comes from, they
- 1:26:36have protection. A lot of people don't think
- 1:26:39about protection difference, it would that have a lot of
- 1:26:41protection up front and those defense bombing Those two guys
- 1:26:46interior-wise free them up because they take the blockers
- 1:26:51and they look the field, it and ruin and they do they do well at
- 1:26:57it. I will tell you the honest
- 1:26:59truth. I mod Walker reminds me a lot of
- 1:27:04a mr. Edmonds, and you should play in
- 1:27:07the burgundy and orange. Thank you his size, he plays
- 1:27:13very similar game and that way he's having a pretty good career
- 1:27:19I think with Buffalo. So just a little bit his style
- 1:27:24reminds me, a lot of that and The fact that he's in his second
- 1:27:29year is going to be a name that here for a while.
- 1:27:34Hundred percent of side Mike Smith is that slate he didn't
- 1:27:41play against you. If he do quizzes, you found me
- 1:27:43with minimally. I don't remember seeing him but
- 1:27:47his stats before self when you go back and look at a lot of the
- 1:27:51other games, you see him a lot. I mean he's in place and a lot
- 1:27:57of that. Ben's opening in front of them
- 1:28:01because of that defensive front because of the, the deacons
- 1:28:05Devine and those two tackles when you have five Ramen that
- 1:28:09are there to block and you have to use all Vibe over the block
- 1:28:12two or three it, frees up the linebackers, to really make
- 1:28:16plays and and all three of them. Excuse me, do very well with
- 1:28:22that. So they should be very
- 1:28:23appreciative of those monsters up front that are helping them.
- 1:28:28But Bobby EG speak. Broadly speaking like a true
- 1:28:32defensive line coach. Right?
- 1:28:33There are going to be in the amount of tackles for
- 1:28:49loss. They've got which I want to talk
- 1:28:50about when we talk about the keys but it's helping that back
- 1:28:54in. And probably the guy that's
- 1:28:56benefited the most is Is the sixth 385 pounds safety and
- 1:29:01Robert Ray me out of San Antonio, Texas.
- 1:29:05I mean Robbie, we looked at we take a look at his stats.
- 1:29:07I mean, I mean solid you know, tackle numbers for safety but
- 1:29:12that kids got five picks and yeah, I am assuming probably.
- 1:29:16What you see is the linemen are forcing the ball earlier.
- 1:29:21The linebackers are coming up fortunate earlier, and he's and
- 1:29:25he's and he's taking full advantage of it.
- 1:29:27He benefiting over 100 percent. He he's a lot of he's in the
- 1:29:33middle of the field a lot. Now I wouldn't say that there.
- 1:29:38Their past defense, their corners and things like that are
- 1:29:42the strong point of that defense.
- 1:29:44Okay. But this efficient enough
- 1:29:47because of the pressure and the things that they're getting up
- 1:29:52burnt from the rep, from the linebackers from the defensive
- 1:29:57end that balls are getting out of there quickly and sometimes
- 1:30:00they getting out of that inherently and the DVDs are
- 1:30:04really benefit from that here more so than a lot boss.
- 1:30:08He's coming over to Middle ball deflected and he's picking
- 1:30:13things up that way. He's actually very good against
- 1:30:16the run to me. If they get through the other
- 1:30:19parts. As you said, with the tackles,
- 1:30:22he's getting those. They're not a lot of long
- 1:30:26Pursuit on big play tackles it's oh they squeezed by somebody and
- 1:30:31now he's there to help out. He's a he's a very patient
- 1:30:38safety. I would say and that's when a
- 1:30:41lot of those other secular picks and things off of balls, that
- 1:30:47probably shouldn't have been thrown when they were hit balls,
- 1:30:51things like that. So, watching him in several
- 1:30:56games, he's obviously a very vocal leader of that group as
- 1:31:00well. Okay, and follow him.
- 1:31:04And he's the, he's a very motivational inspirational.
- 1:31:08No part of that defense in the whole thing.
- 1:31:12So I thought we would be doing them a disservice if we didn't
- 1:31:17mention it, in many of those ways.
- 1:31:19Also, what do you see on this defensive scheme?
- 1:31:22And what you do we've talked about some of the players and
- 1:31:25you've been mentioning kind of throughout.
- 1:31:26But what are a few other things to look for in this scheme that
- 1:31:31their space? My man, those guys up front, eat
- 1:31:35you eat your your interior space up.
- 1:31:38He's going to be Hard to squeeze power runs in there because of
- 1:31:41the way, they clog things up and a lot of linebackers to run
- 1:31:44free. They rely a lot on those double.
- 1:31:48Tees up front and allow those linebackers playing your
- 1:31:51backfield. They force you to play the game
- 1:31:56horizontally. Okay, from side to side, instead
- 1:32:00of getting too much down bill. Now if you can find a protection
- 1:32:04and you can get the ball out, Think Tank and take some
- 1:32:07Advantage with some decent receivers.
- 1:32:11If Grant can stay poised enough in that pocket to get balls out
- 1:32:15quickly, I think they can take advantage of the dbe's not being
- 1:32:20the best, but he's got to be, you got to be ready for that.
- 1:32:24First week, will take some shots.
- 1:32:26Got to realize that we're going to have to make some Some
- 1:32:29extraordinary push up front to make that run game work or else
- 1:32:33they're just gonna they're gonna pressure you all night?
- 1:32:38All right. Well, let's flip we got, we've
- 1:32:40talked players. We taught skiing only just talk
- 1:32:42about a couple Keys here. I looked at Robby and I will
- 1:32:44talk. The first one is Hokies tackles
- 1:32:47for loss. Liberty, they can give up some
- 1:32:51on their offensive line. I mean they're 115 thin.
- 1:32:53The country they're given up about 80 game. 24 yards in the
- 1:32:58Hokies are roughly a top 50 getting about six.
- 1:33:01So slightly above average in after hearing you mentioned
- 1:33:05about this offense in the chunk plays and how quick they can go
- 1:33:08out if we aren't, if we don't at least hit their average, it's
- 1:33:14going to even longer day than I think it's already going to be.
- 1:33:18If you're telling me we're down to what we normally average,
- 1:33:21it's not going to be good at all, if we can live in that
- 1:33:23backfield. Yeah.
- 1:33:26And it's going to go back to what I was talking about.
- 1:33:29If you can, if you can play in that back, you can play in their
- 1:33:31backfield and forth that Tempo to run them off the field.
- 1:33:37Weekly then tax defense is going to be on the field last time.
- 1:33:44And Virginia Tech's going to have to control things office.
- 1:33:49If Virginia Tech can't control, things offensive ly and the
- 1:33:54Defense Forces Liberty in on and off the field quickly and you
- 1:33:59know, 345 play drives and getting the ball back.
- 1:34:03Then both of these defenses are going to be wiped out by the end
- 1:34:06of oh I don't I don't doubt that whatsoever.
- 1:34:10I don't know if that but but you've already mentioned it.
- 1:34:15With Liberty to about tackles for loss.
- 1:34:16I mean, they're the best team in the country at getting tackles
- 1:34:19for loss. They are and and now the Hokey
- 1:34:23our approaches, but they're not atrocious.
- 1:34:27They give up a little. They actually give up less than
- 1:34:29Liberty, they're not as bad as you think.
- 1:34:34I think a lot what goes on with that offensive line is what you
- 1:34:37seen is not being able to either missing a step or get in there
- 1:34:42and not making the push where they're not.
- 1:34:44Driven back but when you plan A Team like Liberty and you see
- 1:34:48them, you know, 9/10 times a game on top of potentially, what
- 1:34:52they do is sacks. I mean if they hit that average
- 1:34:58it's again going to be a long day.
- 1:35:00So you you've said it they make you play horizontally and I
- 1:35:06think in some ways it's okay to play horizontally because going
- 1:35:10into a wall 40 times and getting 1.6% Per carry ankle and do
- 1:35:16anything to you. At least horizontally, at least
- 1:35:19horizontally. If you can miss a tackle get
- 1:35:25eight yards. Exactly perfectly set up a
- 1:35:28screen, get 20 a you're going to probably see the safeties move
- 1:35:34it's going to slowly start moving the box where you can say
- 1:35:36Grant we're about to take the shot you said it three or four
- 1:35:40times P Poise standing there because Dwayne or Caleb can beat
- 1:35:44These Guys. These aren't Ali Corners.
- 1:35:47We're going to, it's going to be pushed, but you're probably
- 1:35:49going to get hit as you finish your throat.
- 1:35:52There's no problem. Robbie's like guaranteed, he
- 1:35:58gets hit 12 times. Are you gonna be the other
- 1:36:02thing? I'm going to say something on
- 1:36:05this to my next Point. I've never seen a 9 when team be
- 1:36:11this bad in. Turnovers blueberries, turned
- 1:36:14the ball over 21 times this year that adds to win nine games.
- 1:36:19And I know what people will say is, we'll look at the look at
- 1:36:21the competition. You know?
- 1:36:24Yep, they did beat Arkansas, but they've also played some of the
- 1:36:28worst teams in the country and I think we talked about how low
- 1:36:33Tech was this year and forcing turnovers, one of the worst in
- 1:36:36the country to have a chance in this game Tech has to be at
- 1:36:40least plus 2 absolutely plus 2. And if they if they can't if
- 1:36:49they can't force Bennett and Bennett shown a propensity to
- 1:36:52throw the ball away. Like you said, you said he'll
- 1:36:55get Rattle and he'll make stupid decisions you'll advise prove
- 1:36:59ill-advised. So if they can take advantage of
- 1:37:01that, there's a chance. But they've got to make that in
- 1:37:04the last piece. And I didn't put this on here
- 1:37:06because I couldn't think of a third one, but you mentioned in
- 1:37:08t.o.p and them somehow Liberty, even when they lose, they, when
- 1:37:14they have the So good games they're still at EOP of 30
- 1:37:18minutes I think protect and after what you said when they
- 1:37:24get them off the field they have to figure out ways to extend
- 1:37:27drives and it's not been pretty, it's not text, one of the worst
- 1:37:32in the country at it. But if you can find a way, they
- 1:37:37have too many. If you know, to me, this should
- 1:37:41be the game. If you're Tyler bone empty, the
- 1:37:44clip. Don't absolutely.
- 1:37:48There's nothing to lose right now.
- 1:37:50There's nothing to lose as long as you aren't in danger in the
- 1:37:52players, nothing to lose. All right.
- 1:37:56And and you know, we talked about it a little bit at the
- 1:38:00very top of the show and we haven't really mentioned another
- 1:38:05part of this could very well be the last game of the season.
- 1:38:08It's true. Very well that there aren't some
- 1:38:11questions about whether you be able to finish their feet.
- 1:38:14So just put that out there. This may be it.
- 1:38:17So, why not put it all out there?
- 1:38:19Why not? It's very true.
- 1:38:23All right. Well Robbie, it's the fun.
- 1:38:26I'm right now. It's prediction time.
- 1:38:28You are the guest I get to lead just the way Tex played this
- 1:38:32year. The stuff we've mentioned at the
- 1:38:34top of the program, how Liberties play it on both sides
- 1:38:37of the ball? I do think the games competitive
- 1:38:40but I think is what we've seen all year with the tech defense.
- 1:38:43I think that third quarter comes and they're they're probably
- 1:38:47down 2010 2013 and like we saw against West Virginia against
- 1:38:52pit against NC State and it It's Georgia Tech eventually the
- 1:38:57defense in your defensive coach. They see it and they it's Wiley
- 1:39:03Coyote they get to the end and it's like And probably ready for
- 1:39:08your old lady and where you got them.
- 1:39:13All right, I'm saying like you say they're half first half,
- 1:39:19you're probably looking at a 1714 ball game.
- 1:39:24You know, I've been going to be close to that point.
- 1:39:27I think, Liberty pulls away the end.
- 1:39:29I think Tempo gets to be a little too much, just don't have
- 1:39:34enough Rush enough, pressure in the backfield.
- 1:39:39The force them to make decisions too quickly and that they put a
- 1:39:45couple on the board at the end after they wanted out a little
- 1:39:48bit. I'm gonna go 31:17 with all
- 1:39:51right and I did text in his he is also going Liberty.
- 1:39:55And I think what we all see here is he's going 27:16 and knowing
- 1:39:59Brian, he's probably thinking similar to us.
- 1:40:02It's going to be a fight in then and you mentioned it a couple
- 1:40:05times. Liberty's got some, the Liberty
- 1:40:06has depth. They have some players you can
- 1:40:08step in and so yeah. All right, so one more thing and
- 1:40:13we brought Robbie into doing a big screener and Robbie, I'll
- 1:40:17let you lead the way cuz what other than the tech gain.
- 1:40:20What games will we be watching this week?
- 1:40:22When Robbie kind of your second free weekend to watch football
- 1:40:27and not have to think about what happened on Friday night.
- 1:40:29What game are you watching and why bother?
- 1:40:32I think a lot of people are gone.
- 1:40:33A lot of people that listen in are going to be like what is he
- 1:40:37might be my big game. I want to see, I want to watch
- 1:40:41Wisconsin and Nebraska and I know both teams have been
- 1:40:45through their been through the wringer.
- 1:40:48This year. Both looking already into works
- 1:40:51of finding the next head coach. Coaches and all of those things,
- 1:40:55but it's the thing that I like to see of the coach, you got two
- 1:41:01teams, basically right now, they got your back against the wall
- 1:41:04and then we'll swing with everything that and Nebraska has
- 1:41:07been doing it longer than Wisconsin has.
- 1:41:10We're trying to figure out exactly, you know, whether the
- 1:41:14guy that they have their the interim right now is the guy
- 1:41:17that they need to stay with, they need to move around.
- 1:41:20And all of those guys that are on both of those teams, have a
- 1:41:24lot to fight for and they will they get the respect and they're
- 1:41:31going to fight through everything and the fact that
- 1:41:35Nebraska is the 12 and a half Point Underdog.
- 1:41:39I guess it seems that really hasn't you know, dominated
- 1:41:44anybody at any point. I I said I'll take Nebraska with
- 1:41:48the 12 and a half. and, The big thing is though, I think they're
- 1:41:53going to stay under that 39. There's going to be a big
- 1:41:58scoring output by either side, but while the line flavor but
- 1:42:07it's going to be a as ESPN reporters would say.
- 1:42:14It's going to be a slobberknocker, the flower,
- 1:42:16they're going to go at each other.
- 1:42:18You know, forehead down power through everything they can and
- 1:42:23you go see some good football out of both of them.
- 1:42:25All right. I'm actually going to be in the
- 1:42:28Big Ten as well. Completely different reason
- 1:42:31though. I'm taking I'm going to be
- 1:42:34watching Iowa, Minnesota late in the afternoon after the tech
- 1:42:37game because I actually want to see an under 32 and a half.
- 1:42:42He's hit because I honest to God.
- 1:42:44I think it will because Iowa is dread Offensive ly they actually
- 1:42:50make Tech and occasional good, which is really bad.
- 1:42:55But Minnesota is also really good defensively.
- 1:42:57And they're not the greatest offensive output.
- 1:42:59I honestly think they're. I want to see if that game can
- 1:43:02stay under 32 points and I think also be a 13-game there.
- 1:43:08You could be right there under. What you can see is 1716 game
- 1:43:13and make 33 points, and make a whole lot of people Bank.
- 1:43:15Oh, buddy. Matchup.
- 1:43:29So this is the Big Ten big screener.
- 1:43:31The USC UCLA Battle of l.a. UCLA.
- 1:43:35A one and a half Point, dog. The over-under is 73 and a half.
- 1:43:40Brian basically USC to winning cover and he's going to take you
- 1:43:45heard it. I'm going to agree with him on
- 1:43:48that. So on, you know, that's going to
- 1:43:51be a fun game. What time is it game Saturday?
- 1:43:54If it's the ten o'clock game I was mostly both of those teams
- 1:43:58on the west coast has got to be a nine eight nine, ten o'clock
- 1:44:01game. Well ain't I can live with an
- 1:44:048:00 a.m. I can live with a 10 o'clock
- 1:44:06game. That's an 8:00 Cape.
- 1:44:08I might actually, why is it that I can't do?
- 1:44:10Yeah, I don't know if I can do that.
- 1:44:12I had to go home after school today, take a nap so I could be
- 1:44:14up this late. Robbie, I'm going to say this
- 1:44:19man. I really appreciate you taking
- 1:44:22the time brother to look at this tape to step in for us on a
- 1:44:27tough week. Goes when he told me his listen,
- 1:44:32we are here we are. Looking at wind to book you for
- 1:44:35next year, at least twice. Maybe three times.
- 1:44:39Maybe I'll take a break and you and you and Brian can enjoy.
- 1:44:44Maybe. I can go to Disney World kids.
- 1:44:59Look at that, it'll scare you, it'll scare you.
- 1:45:02I'm not too worried about it, don't have three kids, I know.
- 1:45:05See what will happen is your entire defensive unit want to
- 1:45:07go. And it'll take like 60 kids.
- 1:45:11Yeah yeah man. Alrighty.
