- 0:35Speaker 2: and we are going to talk to our friend Jeff Legwald,
- 0:37Speaker 2: who's brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical
- 0:40Speaker 2: Workers ib W Local sixty eight. Start with a job
- 0:44Speaker 2: in with a career, Leggy, before we talk some broncos
- 0:47Speaker 2: Man and you are the balloon poppers. So we gotta
- 0:49Speaker 2: get some uh, gotta get some quarterback takes from you.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Of all the sponsors we've had for you, my blue
- 0:55Speaker 2: collar friend out of Chicago, I feel like the Brotherhood,
- 0:59Speaker 2: the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is maybe the most
- 1:02Speaker 2: perfect sponsor we could.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Have I've sp a little time doing a little of that,
- 1:08Speaker 1: so yeah, bring it on.
- 1:10Speaker 2: There we go, so please damn on board. There you go, Jeff,
- 1:13Speaker 2: there you go. All right, my man, I talked to
- 1:16Speaker 2: you a little bit Saturday out of practice. Hit me
- 1:21Speaker 2: just give it to us all you all know the quarterbacks.
- 1:23Speaker 2: What everybody's interested in? I thought, I thought both Zach
- 1:26Speaker 2: Wilson and in particular bone Knicks finished the practice strong Saturday.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I was hoping that was going to lead to better returns.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Today it sounds like that wasn't the case. But give
- 1:36Speaker 2: me the unbiased I have, Jeff Legwald, what'd you see
- 1:39Speaker 2: out there today? First day in patch from the QBS.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Well, I saw a pretty common occurrence for a young
- 1:46Speaker 1: quarterback like bone Nicks. It's first day in pads. It's
- 1:50Speaker 1: the first day. Uh you really had the uh where
- 1:54Speaker 1: the defensive lineman could buzz the tower as it were.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So it's the most traffic the quarterbacks have had to
- 2:01Speaker 1: deal with so far in training camp. So it is
- 2:05Speaker 1: only natural bo Nicks would have a little some struggle,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and he did. Frankly, this was easily of camp certainly,
- 2:16Speaker 1: and even OTAs I think this was easily the probably
- 2:20Speaker 1: the most frustrating practice for him since he got here.
- 2:24Speaker 1: It was not a very good day he had. He
- 2:28Speaker 1: had some struggles with line of scrimmage stuff. He had
- 2:31Speaker 1: some struggles with the you know, some line calls and
- 2:34Speaker 1: some cadence, so you know that coaches even back him
- 2:36Speaker 1: out of there a couple of times, and even under
- 2:40Speaker 1: center you could see in full pads and things ramped
- 2:44Speaker 1: up a little bit, some of the footwork, even getting
- 2:47Speaker 1: back into the handoffs and rollouts. You know, I thought
- 2:52Speaker 1: a few times he was too close to the back
- 2:54Speaker 1: and and those types of things. So you know, he
- 2:57Speaker 1: he isn't going to get the skiff any steps just
- 3:00Speaker 1: because a lot of people want him to be a quarterback,
- 3:03Speaker 1: the starting quarterback. He's gonna have to to go through
- 3:07Speaker 1: the you know, the labyrinth as it were. And today
- 3:10Speaker 1: was kind of the first day of really you know
- 3:14Speaker 1: what's waiting for him a little more. And I think,
- 3:18Speaker 1: you know, be interesting to see how the rest of
- 3:20Speaker 1: the week goes and into the preseason, but I think
- 3:23Speaker 1: today was probably the first day where he probably felt like, Okay,
- 3:29Speaker 1: there's there's some work to be done here.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Jeff has Sean Payton laid out how the competition is
- 3:35Speaker 3: going to work moving forward. Will will he Bownicks get
- 3:39Speaker 3: another opportunity with the ones tomorrow the rest of the
- 3:41Speaker 3: week or is he flip flopping days? What do we
- 3:44Speaker 3: know about that?
- 3:46Speaker 1: Well, Jo is always promised is that he's not making
- 3:50Speaker 1: any promises as it were. You know, he has essentially
- 3:54Speaker 1: reserved the right to change the rotation at any point
- 3:58Speaker 1: he wants to, you know right now, Well, uh, Jared Stidham,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I mean Zach, I'm trying to think that Saturday should
- 4:10Speaker 1: be Stidham's day. Tomorrow they're gonna be in full pads,
- 4:13Speaker 1: So it would make sense that Knicks would get a
- 4:15Speaker 1: full pad practice and and Stidham would and then eventually
- 4:19Speaker 1: probably he would like I would think he would like
- 4:22Speaker 1: Zach Wilson to get one after they you know, they
- 4:26Speaker 1: can't go on pads so many days in a row.
- 4:29Speaker 1: But I would expect Wilson to get a padded practice
- 4:32Speaker 1: to It's hard for me to believe he would narrow
- 4:36Speaker 1: the field before the preseason game in Indy, but uh,
- 4:41Speaker 1: he he has also said he's you know, at least
- 4:45Speaker 1: to me, he's hinted he would like to move quickly
- 4:48Speaker 1: in this, So I I could see after Indy if
- 4:52Speaker 1: nothing happens, you know before it. I could see right
- 4:55Speaker 1: after Indy, after all those off days, there's a couple
- 4:59Speaker 1: of players because it's a weird Sunday preseason game, and
- 5:03Speaker 1: they're going to give players a full day off on
- 5:07Speaker 1: Tuesday after the Sunday preseason game. So I could see
- 5:11Speaker 1: after that we see the most significant change in the rotation.
- 5:17Speaker 2: How did the skill guys do? Again? You know, I look,
- 5:20Speaker 2: you and I have had conversations at camp. Are we
- 5:22Speaker 2: all curious about the quarterback? Absolutely? But I was curious
- 5:25Speaker 2: how some of these guys are going to look when
- 5:27Speaker 2: all of a sudden the contact is in a lot
- 5:29Speaker 2: of people seem to be real impressed with what the
- 5:31Speaker 2: Broncos young secondary has done early on. How did that
- 5:35Speaker 2: go for the skill position guys today, finally having to
- 5:38Speaker 2: get some contact in their face.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I will say, you know, when people say you know
- 5:44Speaker 1: that stuff about the secondary, it really is a testament
- 5:48Speaker 1: to how goods or Can is because I can count
- 5:51Speaker 1: on one hand how many times he's actually been challenged
- 5:54Speaker 1: by any of the three quarterbacks. So he is dictating
- 5:59Speaker 1: things without even touching the ball. So uh, they challenged
- 6:03Speaker 1: him once today, and you know, he knocked it away
- 6:07Speaker 1: in completion. So I think the secondary has shown they've
- 6:12Speaker 1: they've got some you know, McMillan's are really good. Nickel Corner, Cirtanas,
- 6:18Speaker 1: Sir Tan, and I think, if you know, I think
- 6:22Speaker 1: the one guy that's stuck out to me and he's
- 6:23Speaker 1: gotten a chance to play more because Brandon Jones has
- 6:28Speaker 1: gotten hurt and Cayden Stearns is still working his way
- 6:32Speaker 1: back from the injury of last year. As jail skinner,
- 6:36Speaker 1: I think has really shown himself to be ready for
- 6:40Speaker 1: more when he's got a chance to work with the
- 6:43Speaker 1: with the Ones and he and he's gotten some good
- 6:45Speaker 1: snaps with the Ones in recent days.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Jeff, are there any other dramatic position battles brewing that
- 6:51Speaker 3: we should know about. I always liked those in training
- 6:54Speaker 3: camp man, who's gonna win, Who's gonna win the job?
- 6:57Speaker 3: Earn the job?
- 6:58Speaker 1: That's because you won your fair That's why you liked it.
- 7:02Speaker 1: But I think running back is I'm intrigued because they
- 7:06Speaker 1: sort of had They've got three big physical runners and
- 7:10Speaker 1: then they have Julia McLoughlin and last year. You know, look,
- 7:15Speaker 1: you know, year to year is no guarantee of how
- 7:17Speaker 1: many guys they're going to keep and all that at
- 7:19Speaker 1: each position. But last year they only kept three running
- 7:22Speaker 1: backs and a fullback. And if you do that this
- 7:27Speaker 1: year again, you know, sort of who's that odd man out?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Because I think Estimate really has a role in this
- 7:33Speaker 1: offense somewhere, whether it's red zone or just you know,
- 7:39Speaker 1: he's just too much of a tackle breaker to me
- 7:43Speaker 1: to not have any offense somewhere. And I may be wrong,
- 7:47Speaker 1: but you know, putting my draft hat on a little bit,
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think he can be impactful in the passing game,
- 7:55Speaker 1: you know, and he didn't get that chance really at
- 7:59Speaker 1: Notre Dame very much. But I think as a pro,
- 8:02Speaker 1: I think he could have some third down impact as
- 8:05Speaker 1: a you know, as a as an emergency option, you know,
- 8:09Speaker 1: a hot read or whatever. I just think he's got
- 8:12Speaker 1: it in him and I really like him as a runner,
- 8:14Speaker 1: So I like, I want to see all the running
- 8:16Speaker 1: backs thing it's gonna shake out as they moved through
- 8:19Speaker 1: the moved through the preseason. And that other corner spot.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I think Jamari Mathis and Levi Wallace have gotten the
- 8:28Speaker 1: most time with the first team defense, uh in the
- 8:32Speaker 1: first week and week plus in training camp, and I
- 8:36Speaker 1: think that's another spot that's open for, you know, for
- 8:39Speaker 1: a starter to win.
- 8:42Speaker 2: What about the pass rush legy? I mean, you know,
- 8:45Speaker 2: Joel was telling me he was excited about some things
- 8:47Speaker 2: Jonathan Cooper did today that he saw I practice. Jonathan
- 8:50Speaker 2: Cooper always seems to be in the mix. Judging by
- 8:53Speaker 2: the report from Mike Sandford. You had Benito trying to
- 8:56Speaker 2: guess snap counts and that got him in trouble. But
- 8:58Speaker 2: where do you think this pass rush is at?
- 9:01Speaker 1: Well, yeah, they all were guessing today because they got
- 9:03Speaker 1: it right early on. So they as soon as they
- 9:07Speaker 1: they got a couple right, they were all all over
- 9:11Speaker 1: it until they've they've offense finally switched things up a
- 9:15Speaker 1: little bit and they had to play it a little
- 9:17Speaker 1: more honest. But you know, I think they've got the
- 9:20Speaker 1: ability to mix and match. You know, I think they've
- 9:23Speaker 1: got productive guys who can who can have impact. It's just,
- 9:29Speaker 1: you know, are they gonna you know, are they gonna
- 9:31Speaker 1: have a double digit sack guy? You know, I don't
- 9:33Speaker 1: know that. Well, they have a lot of guys with
- 9:36Speaker 1: seven that's possible, I think, And I do think Cooper,
- 9:42Speaker 1: you know, he's such a the proverbial high motor player.
- 9:45Speaker 1: He's always gonna look good in these kinds of situations
- 9:48Speaker 1: because he he doesn't ever down shift, so uh, you know,
- 9:53Speaker 1: because that's how he's gotten to where he is as
- 9:56Speaker 1: a former seventh rounder. And you know, so so he
- 10:00Speaker 1: you know, he's given exactly what they expect him. I
- 10:04Speaker 1: think the wild card is two wild cards in the
- 10:07Speaker 1: pass rush and Benito who had some of the most
- 10:11Speaker 1: pressures of any player in the league last year not
- 10:14Speaker 1: named Micah Parsons, but can he turn some of those
- 10:17Speaker 1: into sacks? And I think Jonah ellis to me as
- 10:22Speaker 1: he's shown pretty well through the offseason program and in
- 10:26Speaker 1: my mind, and I think as a spot rusher he
- 10:29Speaker 1: could contribute right away.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Jeff, how comfortable are they with that tight end room
- 10:34Speaker 3: right now? A couple of times here throughout the course
- 10:37Speaker 3: of the offseason, I've heard Dawson Knox his name brought up,
- 10:41Speaker 3: and I'm a huge fan of this kid in Buffalo,
- 10:43Speaker 3: and it sounds like they might not need him in
- 10:45Speaker 3: Buffalo because they got this rookie, Dalton Kincaid who came
- 10:49Speaker 3: on last year. There was a conversation about Sutton me
- 10:52Speaker 3: and traded for Dawson Knox. Obviously that ship is sailed
- 10:54Speaker 3: now that they reworked that contract. There was conversation. I
- 10:57Speaker 3: don't know where I saw it. I think p Ryan
- 10:59Speaker 3: maybe potentially being part of a trade to Buffalo for
- 11:03Speaker 3: Dawson Knox. Is there any footing to any of those rumors.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Well, Joel, I think running back is one of the
- 11:11Speaker 1: few places they actually have a surplus, So if they
- 11:15Speaker 1: wanted to make a deal, you know, that's what I
- 11:18Speaker 1: was saying. If they keep three running backs again, that
- 11:20Speaker 1: leaves them quote unquote the extra back to do something
- 11:25Speaker 1: with if they want to try to make a deal
- 11:29Speaker 1: of some sort. I think right now in the passing games,
- 11:33Speaker 1: it's Greg Dulcic and that's it, you know, for me,
- 11:38Speaker 1: beyond you know, the short areas, the short quadrants of
- 11:42Speaker 1: the field. Dulcis has really been the only guy to
- 11:46Speaker 1: show any sort of impact down the field. And if
- 11:49Speaker 1: he's healthy and can play fifteen, sixteen, seventeen games, that's great,
- 11:56Speaker 1: But you know, he has not had that good fortune
- 11:59Speaker 1: very and if he is not available, they really haven't
- 12:04Speaker 1: shown yet that they have anybody else who can who
- 12:08Speaker 1: can stress a defense the way he can, and I
- 12:11Speaker 1: think in today's lead, if you don't have that player
- 12:15Speaker 1: at tight end, you're really hamstrung on offense because that
- 12:19Speaker 1: that is a matchup the good offenses are consistently winning.
- 12:24Speaker 2: It was funny, Jeff, I thought of you as we
- 12:26Speaker 2: had this conversation last segment. I asked Joel point blank,
- 12:29Speaker 2: you know the fans wanted to be nicked. Frankly, so
- 12:32Speaker 2: does this guy Nix or Wilson just for the sake
- 12:35Speaker 2: of something new when the season starts a quarterback. But
- 12:38Speaker 2: by all accounts, including yours, if you're talking about the
- 12:41Speaker 2: guy that's ready to run the offense the most fluid,
- 12:44Speaker 2: it's Jared Stindham. And Joel echoed what you said so
- 12:47Speaker 2: many times. You can't not start the guy that wins
- 12:50Speaker 2: the battle on the field because it'll divide a locker room.
- 12:55Speaker 2: So how big a problem might that be by the
- 12:58Speaker 2: time we're all said and done with this. From what
- 12:59Speaker 2: you said so far in the way that Stidham's performing.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Well, that's part of me why I think he makes
- 13:05Speaker 1: a quick decision. Uh, you know, the longer it goes,
- 13:09Speaker 1: the more opportunities those other guys have. So if he
- 13:13Speaker 1: really wants the rookie to simply be the starter. They
- 13:16Speaker 1: may just have to say it sooner than they would
- 13:19Speaker 1: have liked, because I mean, you know, you know, I don't.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I don't believe in the daily scorekeeping of and look,
- 13:27Speaker 1: I know the business. I've worked in the business. I've
- 13:30Speaker 1: participated and I participated in charting how players do it practice.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I understand all that, but I you know, I don't.
- 13:38Speaker 1: I don't like the turn every day into sort of
- 13:42Speaker 1: the pro wrestling you know, who won the day type
- 13:45Speaker 1: of thing. But if you did that today, you know,
- 13:49Speaker 1: it was Stidham by a mile. You know, he was
- 13:52Speaker 1: the guy running the offense. And it's Zach Wilson who
- 13:56Speaker 1: who is willing to challenge people down the field. You know,
- 13:59Speaker 1: it's not always the fessful, but he's got the arm
- 14:03Speaker 1: of the group and he he has been far more
- 14:05Speaker 1: willing to push the ball down the field. But just
- 14:09Speaker 1: running the offense and making plays. Uh, it was Jared
- 14:14Speaker 1: Stidham and you know everybody else today.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Jeff who's been the most impressive rookie so far?
- 14:22Speaker 1: Uh, you know, I like, I think I think Jonah
- 14:25Speaker 1: Ellis has really been a good rookie for me, and
- 14:28Speaker 1: I think if you're looking for a little bit of
- 14:31Speaker 1: a rookie, people may not be you know, an estimate
- 14:33Speaker 1: I think is an immediate fit. So you know, I
- 14:37Speaker 1: put him in that group too, but uh, you know,
- 14:41Speaker 1: he was a seventh rounder. But Devon Veley has shown
- 14:44Speaker 1: himself to be a physical receiver, a quality route runner.
- 14:49Speaker 1: He's in the right place, he's where he's supposed to be,
- 14:53Speaker 1: and he fights for the ball. And you know, you
- 14:57Speaker 1: guys know quarterbacks, They love guys who are gonna who
- 15:01Speaker 1: are gonna fight for it if they put it out there.
- 15:03Speaker 1: And I like what he's done so far. Now do
- 15:06Speaker 1: they have a place for him to squeeze in? You know,
- 15:10Speaker 1: I don't know the answer to that yet, because if
- 15:12Speaker 1: they only keep five, you can get to five pretty
- 15:14Speaker 1: fast and not have either rookie on. So it's hard
- 15:20Speaker 1: for me to believe they're gonna get rid of both rookies.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Are risk sending them both through waivers, But that's a
- 15:26Speaker 1: tight fit there a receiver. But I think Mele has
- 15:29Speaker 1: really shown well for himself.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Jeff always great to talk to you, man. We'll look
- 15:33Speaker 2: forward to talking to you at the end of the
- 15:35Speaker 2: week when we've seen another interesting week. Of camp at least,
- 15:38Speaker 2: I hope it's interesting. Have a good one.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I appreciate it. Guys. Thank you.
