Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So the Trump was speaking of was real. Cannie's won
- 0:02Speaker 1: the Canadian election. Insult to injury this morning for Pierre Pogiev,
- 0:07Speaker 1: the guy Cannie beat. He's projicted to lose his seat
- 0:10Speaker 1: in the House of Commons too. He's held it for
- 0:12Speaker 1: twenty years now. Some Liberals going to take it off him.
- 0:15Speaker 1: He's lost the chance of becoming prime minister, end his seat.
- 0:18Speaker 1: That is a bad day at the office. Feature Storing
- 0:20Speaker 1: News political analyst Nick Harper's with us this morning. Nick,
- 0:22Speaker 1: Good morning, Good morning Ryan. That's pretty embarrassing for him,
- 0:26Speaker 1: isn't it.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Oh, a complete disaster, Like you say, he has been
- 0:30Speaker 2: and then being for a very long time. He's been
- 0:32Speaker 2: there and he's been going through a lot of things.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And he thought three months ago that he was going
- 0:37Speaker 2: to be leading Canada into the foreseeable future. But then
- 0:41Speaker 2: we saw this tremendous turnaround in the polls. The Conservatives'
- 0:45Speaker 2: double point lead suddenly completely fell away, and going into
- 0:48Speaker 2: the election the Liberals were leading it. As we saw
- 0:50Speaker 2: on the light, the Liberals took a fourth term, Mark
- 0:54Speaker 2: Carney remaining as the Prime Minister. He was there for
- 0:56Speaker 2: a few weeks ahead of the election after he took
- 0:58Speaker 2: over from Justin Trudea, so he will now be serving
- 1:02Speaker 2: a full term as Prime minister. Before Donald Trump came
- 1:05Speaker 2: into office, this seemed unthinkable because Canada was quite simply
- 1:09Speaker 2: fed up with Liberals, fed up with Justin Trudeau at
- 1:13Speaker 2: the head of the party. He stepped down at a
- 1:15Speaker 2: time when he was particularly unpopular, and the thinking was
- 1:18Speaker 2: that this was going to be a referendum on Justin
- 1:20Speaker 2: Trudeau and therefore the other party, the Conservatives, would have won.
- 1:24Speaker 2: That's not what happened, largely because of the Trump effect
- 1:27Speaker 2: and everything that he's been saying about Canada over the
- 1:29Speaker 2: last few.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Monthsick obviously an incredible feat for him, But is this
- 1:33Speaker 1: I just wonder, is this the high tide mark for
- 1:36Speaker 1: Matt Canney. You know, sure Trump helped unite Canada, but
- 1:39Speaker 1: all of those problems that had Polly of twenty five
- 1:43Speaker 1: points that here just a few weeks ago haven't gone away.
- 1:45Speaker 1: The cost of living, the crime and you've had a
- 1:47Speaker 1: decade of liberal rule. Now he's got a hell of
- 1:50Speaker 1: a job, doesn't he He has.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, there are plenty of problems that many Canadians were
- 1:55Speaker 2: unhappy with, housing, the cost of living, problems with the
- 1:58Speaker 2: healthcare system, immigration. All of those problems are things that
- 2:02Speaker 2: Mark Carney needs to tackle while also trying to unite
- 2:05Speaker 2: the country around Donald Trump. We could see tariffs potentially
- 2:09Speaker 2: disappear overnight. We know that Donald Trump likes to change
- 2:12Speaker 2: things really day by day with one tweet or another.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Of course, if those all disappear suddenly, this reason why
- 2:19Speaker 2: he was elected as Prime minister vanishes, and those big
- 2:22Speaker 2: problems that Canadians really want to be dealt with something
- 2:25Speaker 2: that he will then have to tackle. I mean, it's
- 2:27Speaker 2: going to be a tough time for him. He has
- 2:29Speaker 2: a tremendous to do list to try and work out.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And that's not without mentioning the fact that he will
- 2:34Speaker 2: have to deal with his nearest neighbor, the United States,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and try and work out a trade policy in a
- 2:39Speaker 2: way that the two countries can move forward together. Yeah.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Hey, just quickly thing that one hundred and seventy two
- 2:43Speaker 1: the magic number for a majority with no idea yet
- 2:46Speaker 1: whither they've got.
- 2:47Speaker 2: The yet no, not quite there yet, And it could
- 2:50Speaker 2: be that, you know, he will need to scrabble around
- 2:53Speaker 2: for some other parties to be able to build that coalition.
- 2:56Speaker 2: It could be difficult for him to do, and of
- 2:57Speaker 2: course that reduces his ability is mandate to lead the country. Certainly,
- 3:01Speaker 2: if he hasn't got quite the majority, then he needs one.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Nick appreciate your time. Great to have you on feature
