Is McMenamins Edgefield Oregon's Most Haunted Hotel? · Eerily Beloved

0:00
SPEAKER_00: We went into this long room with a bunch of closets, and when we turned on the light, I saw a person peeking out from the closet.
0:07
SPEAKER_00: It was definitely male and not too old.
0:09
SPEAKER_00: He had his hand on the closet door, but when I looked closer, he was gone.
0:14
SPEAKER_00: I asked my friend if he saw it, and he agreed that there was a strange feeling in the room, so we got out of there as quickly as we could.
0:21
SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the podcast.
0:23
SPEAKER_00: And Ely beloved, we are gathered here today with Gedward's mom.
0:29
SPEAKER_00: And they have no idea what we're talking about this week, I don't think.
0:33
SPEAKER_00: So as we go through this, I want you to guess what you think this is.
0:38
SPEAKER_00: It should be pretty clear, like at least part part way through the history part, but I guess we'll see.
0:45
SPEAKER_02: Again with the closets.
0:47
SPEAKER_01: It's always the closets, dude.
0:49
SPEAKER_01: So something always bad in the closet.
0:51
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
0:58
SPEAKER_00: When settlers arrived in Oregon via the Oregon Trail, the state's population exploded rapidly in a short amount of time.
1:04
SPEAKER_00: As the population increased, so did the number of what was considered chronically poor.
1:09
SPEAKER_00: People flocking to the area for gold, mines, railroad construction, or seasonal farm work would find themselves without working on the street if a mine was fruitless, a railroad grant didn't go through, or if a farm was unable to produce.
1:21
SPEAKER_00: By 1854, territorial legislation considered the poor laws were passed, requiring counties to financially support the destitute.
1:29
SPEAKER_00: The idea was that those who were able-bodied were able to perform manual labor at a poor farm in exchange to have their basic needs met.
1:37
SPEAKER_00: This was not a great system, as it was up to the county to decide who was considered worthy of financial support rather than standard government assistance for those that needed it.
1:46
SPEAKER_00: Prior to the existence of Social Security and Welfare Services, there were few resources or ways that orphaned, elderly, sick, widowed, or mentally ill people could receive food, shelter, and medical care.
1:57
SPEAKER_00: While in theory able-bodied people would perform manual labor, poor farms were a last resort for many, as if you could work, you would be able to support yourself otherwise.
2:06
SPEAKER_00: Some poor farms offer operated in good faith with the residents cared for, others unfortunately did not.
2:13
SPEAKER_02: Well, of course.
2:14
SPEAKER_02: I'm sure it was skewed one way and it wasn't the good way.
2:19
SPEAKER_00: Do you have any guesses yet?
2:22
SPEAKER_01: No.
2:23
SPEAKER_00: Do you have any guesses?
2:25
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
2:26
SPEAKER_00: In 1868, Multnomah County opened the hillside farm located in southwest Portland, which is now Washington Park.
2:33
SPEAKER_00: This isn't what we're talking about today.
2:35
SPEAKER_00: This is just what this other place used to be.
2:37
SPEAKER_00: An article from OPB states that newspaper reports from 1877 detailed deplorable conditions with headlines like filthy conditions at the poor farm shock Portland.
2:46
SPEAKER_00: Despite numerous reports of neglect, by the 1880s, the Hillside Farm had cared for over 1,500 residents.
2:53
SPEAKER_00: Inadequate and even life-threatening conditions after the tuberculosis ward was found to be in deplorable condition, led to the building being condemned in 1910.
3:02
SPEAKER_00: Little to no records of the farm and those who retreated there exist.
3:06
SPEAKER_00: And allegedly, actually, this isn't allegedly, this is true.
3:10
SPEAKER_00: Construction at the Oregon Zoo occasionally unearthed bodies believed to be those of former farm residents.
3:15
SPEAKER_00: What?
3:16
SPEAKER_00: What did the Oregon Zoo?
3:18
SPEAKER_00: When they like do expansions?
3:20
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because it's right at the bottom.
3:21
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, in like 2013, they unearthed like nine and unmarked graves.
3:26
SPEAKER_01: Mmm.
3:27
SPEAKER_00: Yep.
3:28
SPEAKER_00: Any further guesses now?
3:30
SPEAKER_01: No, but it's gotta be something closer to us.
3:32
SPEAKER_01: So is it the zoo hauntings?
3:34
SPEAKER_00: No.
3:34
SPEAKER_00: Is the zoo haunted?
3:36
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
3:37
SPEAKER_02: Do we have like primates coming out of the closets?
3:39
SPEAKER_00: Maybe.
3:40
SPEAKER_00: No, just men.
3:41
SPEAKER_00: Following the closure in 1911, the Multnomah County Poor Farm opened in Troutdale, Oregon, with the intention to replace the hillside farm.
3:49
SPEAKER_00: Nine buildings resided on the 330-acre campus, which included the main residential building with a two-story infirmary wing that included a tuberculosis ward, a cannery, a greenhouse, an admin building, a cemetery, and additional duplexes.
4:04
SPEAKER_00: So this was like a massive property.
4:06
SPEAKER_00: Are we going to be talking about the Salem farm home, the children's farm home?
4:10
SPEAKER_00: While the poor farms were being phased out, still many institutions established during this period focus on self-sufficiency through inmate or resident-based farming occupations.
4:19
SPEAKER_00: Institutions in Salem, like the training school, Fairview, the State Hospital's cottage farm, and even the prison adopted this method.
4:27
SPEAKER_00: Additional farm welfare locations for children and minors were supported during this time, such as the Children's Farm Home Ray Corallis, which we're not talking about today, but it will have its own episode in the future.
4:40
SPEAKER_00: No, as it is still in operation.
4:42
SPEAKER_00: But that's like a privately, privately funded home as opposed to a local.
4:47
SPEAKER_01: Well, you've given us really no clues yet.
4:49
SPEAKER_01: Except for the zoo.
4:50
SPEAKER_00: It's in Trottdale.
4:51
SPEAKER_00: The Multnomah County Poor Farm was significant because it was the largest locally sponsored welfare institution in the state and seemed incredibly more successful than its predecessor.
5:00
SPEAKER_00: When opened in November 1911, 211 residents moved in, and three years later, this population grew to 302, of which the able-bodied managed dairy cows, hogs, chickens, hundreds of chickens, not just like a small group of chickens, and a variety of crops on the farmland that was then shared with the local jail.
5:21
SPEAKER_00: Those unable to do physical outdoor labor helped in the kitchens with laundry and in the hospital.
5:26
SPEAKER_00: In the 1920s to early 30s, the Muloma County poor farm started shifting away from housing what they considered vagrants and those on the streets, and instead focused on providing care for sick and unhoused elderly populations.
5:39
SPEAKER_00: The job market boom in 1935, created in part due to World War II, led to an able-bodied person to leave the farm.
5:46
SPEAKER_00: Those who stayed were elderly or physically uncapable of being without constant care.
5:52
SPEAKER_00: By 1950, there was little community need for a poor farm as they didn't have people who could do physical labor anymore, and the institution was becoming more of a financial liability.
6:02
SPEAKER_00: In 1964, it was reopened as a rehabilitation and medical center called Edgefield Manor until its complete closure and abandonment in 1984.
6:11
SPEAKER_01: Oh, we're going to be talking we're we're talking about the Edgefield.
6:14
SPEAKER_00: Uh-huh.
6:15
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
6:18
SPEAKER_00: In 1990, the campus was purchased by Brian and Mike McMinneman.
6:25
SPEAKER_00: And over the next few years, the grounds were renovated and repurposed with the original structures of the poor farm buildings used as a skeleton for what we now know as their Edgefield locations.
6:35
SPEAKER_00: Hundreds of people had called the poor farm home either temporarily or for longer periods of their life.
6:41
SPEAKER_00: For some, it became their final resting place.
6:44
SPEAKER_00: Many of those who died here from tuberculosis, old age, or poor treatment were buried in unmarked graves on the property.
6:51
SPEAKER_00: Some were even transferred to the Oregon State Hospital and recovered in 2004 along with thousands of other unclaimed ashes.
6:57
SPEAKER_00: So we're talking about the McMiniman's Edgefield location.
7:05
SPEAKER_00: I don't think I've been there actually.
7:07
SPEAKER_00: It kind of sounds cool.
7:10
SPEAKER_00: With such a fraught history filled with decades of emotional turmoil, it's not surprising that strange and spooky things started happening before the buildings were even fully restored.
7:19
SPEAKER_00: The story from the beginning was an account from John Flannery who did work on the building in 1989.
7:25
SPEAKER_00: A year later, he was invited back for the grand opening and asked about the room with the closets.
7:30
SPEAKER_00: Instead of brushing him off like he assumed, they said that they had hired priests, shamans, and others to cleanse the place before opening.
7:38
SPEAKER_00: During refurbishment in what's now room 215, many say that workers discovered a pentagram made of animal bones.
7:46
SPEAKER_02: Come on now.
7:47
SPEAKER_00: After opening, ghostly encounters became so common that a guest book filled with former staff and patron experiences sits at the front desk.
7:55
SPEAKER_00: Like the lighthouses.
7:58
SPEAKER_00: Edgefield embraces the unexpected guests.
8:00
SPEAKER_00: McMinneman's marketing writer slash editor, Carrie Beaker, said, I wouldn't say that we use it to draw people in, but we kind of have fun with it.
8:07
SPEAKER_00: It's such a subjective science.
8:08
SPEAKER_00: We have a historical side we like to focus on more than the speculative side.
8:12
SPEAKER_00: You've been to Edgefield?
8:14
SPEAKER_00: Yes.
8:15
unknown: Have you been?
8:16
SPEAKER_01: And it's a little bit spooky.
8:17
SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's a it's a gr it's a great place if you're just like there for the day.
8:20
SPEAKER_01: You know, they have a restaurant, it's fun, they have events there, but to stay the night, I'm not a fan, uh especially if you have to stay where there's only the community bathrooms.
8:29
SPEAKER_01: I was gonna say, yeah, is it the place?
8:31
SPEAKER_01: Yep.
8:32
SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
8:32
SPEAKER_01: Not my favorite, but you know, um being there in 1993, um, right after said Mr.
8:44
SPEAKER_01: Flannery, you know, was there.
8:46
SPEAKER_01: I mean, just just a few years later.
8:49
SPEAKER_01: It was creepy, and I did not get sleep there at all.
8:52
SPEAKER_01: I didn't I did not like there's there's a lot of noises that were going on, and and I'm not like typically like scared or thinking that those types of things are happening, but it was just a very odd place.
9:03
SPEAKER_00: Well, and the the murals and stuff don't help either because they're all yeah, distorted and you know, McMinniman's art.
9:11
SPEAKER_01: I mean it's definitely a vibe, right?
9:13
SPEAKER_01: It's and so it's a McMiniman's vibe, I get it, but it's just like like I said, fun for a day or an event, but I won't be staying the night there.
9:24
SPEAKER_00: The second floor, specifically room 215, is considered the most haunted and is also the most requested.
9:30
SPEAKER_00: It's uncool because people want to have the spooky.
9:33
SPEAKER_02: I don't want I don't want people coming out of my closet.
9:35
SPEAKER_00: I don't know what room we stayed in.
9:37
SPEAKER_00: I think it's called the Amazing Grace Room.
9:40
SPEAKER_02: That's creepy on its own.
9:42
SPEAKER_02: I'm so good.
9:43
SPEAKER_00: Because I think every room has a has a name.
9:46
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
9:46
SPEAKER_00: It's unclear why this is a why exactly this is a hot spot for paranormal activity, but according to many stories, this room even has a ghost furry friend, which I'm good.
9:56
SPEAKER_00: Isn't that bad.
9:57
SPEAKER_00: Ghost report having a wet nose being shoved in their faces.
10:00
SPEAKER_02: Nope.
10:02
SPEAKER_02: That's so gross.
10:04
SPEAKER_00: Like a cat nose or a dog nose.
10:07
SPEAKER_01: You hope.
10:08
SPEAKER_01: No, no nose, no nose, no.
10:12
SPEAKER_00: Temperature drops, flickering lights, footsteps, and even voices can be experienced in this room.
10:18
SPEAKER_00: Allegedly, a medium stayed here after guessing it was the most haunted room.
10:22
SPEAKER_00: She liked in the hotel.
10:24
SPEAKER_00: She walked down the hallways and was like this room.
10:26
SPEAKER_02: I'm sure, yeah.
10:27
SPEAKER_00: And when she tried to sleep, something whispered, get out in her ear.
10:31
SPEAKER_00: One of the most reported encounters on the second floor is a lady in white, potentially wearing a hospital gown, silently wandering the hallways at night.
10:40
SPEAKER_01: I mean, at least she's quiet.
10:42
SPEAKER_01: We should have dad stay there.
10:43
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we should.
10:44
SPEAKER_02: Hey, dad, go have fun.
10:45
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
10:46
SPEAKER_02: Is there a golf course up there?
10:47
SPEAKER_02: Maybe dad and Paul.
10:48
SPEAKER_01: There is a golf course.
10:49
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, maybe dad.
10:50
SPEAKER_01: Hey, Dad, Paul, go golf.
10:51
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, maybe they'll go stay there.
10:52
SPEAKER_00: I was thinking of all like scary places.
10:54
SPEAKER_00: I feel like this is one we could actually go to.
10:57
SPEAKER_00: As opposed to like the dam the side of damish or something where you can just there's nothing there.
11:03
SPEAKER_00: This you could actually go have dinner.
11:05
SPEAKER_02: I'm alright.
11:06
SPEAKER_00: Despite its history and reputation, most go ghostly encounters at Edgefield are not malevolent and seem to be former resident staff or patients during its time as a poor farm.
11:15
SPEAKER_00: A young child who is said to have died of chicken pox was buried in an unmarked grave, can be heard being comforted by his mother, who was also buried on the property.
11:24
SPEAKER_00: Guests and staff report hearing nursery rhymes being sung to the child nearly every night.
11:28
unknown: Come on.
11:29
SPEAKER_02: Bro, malicious or not, I'm so good.
11:33
SPEAKER_02: Dude, no.
11:34
SPEAKER_00: Whips of floral perfume floral perfume and cigar smoke lingering in the empty hallways and rooms have been encountered as well, with many believing they're from elderly patients who died on the property.
11:46
SPEAKER_00: A McMinnaman's blog post about entries from the guest ghost book relays this guest experience.
11:52
SPEAKER_00: So this person said, I felt a quick breeze and the strongest sweet scent came over me.
11:56
SPEAKER_00: It smelled like flowers, kind of perfume-like.
11:58
SPEAKER_00: I lay in bed for an hour and saw shadows dancing on the walls, the ceiling, and the window.
12:03
SPEAKER_00: Spirits were flying around the room.
12:04
SPEAKER_00: It was a great encounter.
12:06
SPEAKER_02: Dude, I would pay you to stay there.
12:08
SPEAKER_02: You would not.
12:09
SPEAKER_02: You would not.
12:10
SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think I would.
12:11
SPEAKER_00: I don't think I would.
12:12
SPEAKER_00: Because also people have said, like, haunted or not, it is an old building, and so it's constantly creaky.
12:18
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's really noisy.
12:20
SPEAKER_00: There's people like walking down the hallways in the middle of the night to go to the bathrooms.
12:24
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like in most cases, there's like community bathrooms.
12:28
SPEAKER_01: So you have to you get up in the middle of the night, you have to leave your room to go to the bathroom.
12:32
SPEAKER_02: That's worse than a cruise ship cabin.
12:34
SPEAKER_00: I think Heather said that she had stayed there with her niece or something.
12:38
SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it's not like and some of the rooms have their own restrooms, you know, and bathroom facilities.
12:43
SPEAKER_00: I think only a few.
12:44
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but there's like community showers and because that's what that's what I had to do when I when I was there.
12:51
SPEAKER_01: You pay for the dorm experience.
12:53
SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
12:56
SPEAKER_00: Another commonly encountered apparition is a small child darting past guests in the hallway, and when they ask where his parents are, he vanishes.
13:04
SPEAKER_00: Additionally, it's reported that in some areas a heaviness or intense melancholy can be felt by those who have a sick sense.
13:12
SPEAKER_00: Which makes sense considering Yeah, well it's a hospital.
13:15
SPEAKER_00: I mean, well, after and and it was for Well, and it was like a they had a turb tuberculosis ward, like that was poor and needy.
13:22
SPEAKER_02: The old dudes with TB were puffing cigars.
13:24
SPEAKER_00: Not probably not those guys, but just old people who couldn't live by themselves and didn't have any family left.
13:34
SPEAKER_00: As I said before, most encounters were not malevolent.
13:38
SPEAKER_01: However.
13:39
SPEAKER_00: But they're having a few experiences that probably don't land in the I'm a happy ghost category.
13:48
SPEAKER_00: Many have felt watched or followed throughout the buildings and even in their rooms.
13:52
SPEAKER_00: Once, when a guest reported this to staff, they both they both heard a voice scream, get out at them.
13:58
SPEAKER_00: Some have felt hands touching them or have experience being shoved.
14:02
SPEAKER_00: An entry from a housekeeper says, I was doing housekeeping about a month ago and I was standing at the foot of the bed when suddenly I felt something firmly grab my ankle and not let go until I jumped away.
14:13
SPEAKER_00: I looked under the bed and there was nothing.
14:15
SPEAKER_00: Freaked me out a little.
14:19
SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's absolutely unacceptable.
14:22
SPEAKER_02: Not malicious.
14:24
SPEAKER_02: You got hands grabbing you.
14:25
SPEAKER_01: Calling HR.
14:27
SPEAKER_01: Getting pushed.
14:28
SPEAKER_01: I wonder if they have special insurance for that.
14:30
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, can I get a refund if if someone screams get out of me?
14:33
SPEAKER_02: Like, okay.
14:35
SPEAKER_00: Some have said like I walked to my room, walked straight out, and left, like, said, sorry, I'm not staying here, and drove away.
14:42
SPEAKER_01: I'd probably do the same.
14:43
SPEAKER_01: We've done that before.
14:45
SPEAKER_00: That's true.
14:47
SPEAKER_00: And that wasn't even like a a haunted place.
14:50
SPEAKER_00: That was.
14:50
SPEAKER_02: That wasn't even supernatural.
14:51
SPEAKER_02: It was just grimy.
14:53
SPEAKER_00: Well, and this place probably has a certain level of grimy.
14:56
SPEAKER_00: It isn't McMinimans.
14:57
SPEAKER_00: So that kind of adds to the Yeah.
14:59
SPEAKER_01: I mean, like I said, it's nice, but there's yeah, a lot of a lot of paintings on the wall.
15:03
SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of things.
15:03
SPEAKER_01: It's like um, you know, more like it's maximalist.
15:07
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
15:08
SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's it has Tchotchkies that you can sneak into your suitcase.
15:14
SPEAKER_01: No.
15:15
SPEAKER_00: No.
15:16
SPEAKER_00: There's like faces plant painted on the pipes that are exposed, but like every once in a while, so if you look up, there'll just be like a face looking at you.
15:26
unknown: Yeah.
15:26
SPEAKER_00: They definitely will eat into the spookiness.
15:30
SPEAKER_02: I like the Corvallis location better.
15:31
SPEAKER_02: You just have like sinks and toilets on the call.
15:33
SPEAKER_00: I was gonna say the toilets on the wall.
15:34
SPEAKER_00: The toilets on the wall.
15:36
SPEAKER_02: That's way cooler than whatever that is.
15:37
SPEAKER_00: Well, guests might have an encounter during their stay.
15:40
SPEAKER_00: Staff are the ones that experience a number of explain unexplainable happenings, obviously, because they're there all the time.
15:48
SPEAKER_00: Allison Berliner, a wine server, claims she encountered a nurse.
15:52
SPEAKER_00: I was just walking with a bucket and I saw this sixties styled woman.
15:56
SPEAKER_00: I could tell she had a little hat on.
15:58
SPEAKER_00: I also could tell that she had panaho pantyhose on and that's how that's how clear she was.
16:02
SPEAKER_00: And she was just walking and you couldn't see the keys, but looked like she was holding keys and she was and she was coming this way, and then she kind of turned and she looked like she was going to open the door and then she just vanished.
16:13
SPEAKER_00: The location of the winery where this lady saw this nurse was where the infirmary used to be.
16:18
SPEAKER_00: Every once in a while, McMahon's will do a blog post about the ghost, and the comments are flooded with encounters that didn't make it into the the ghost book.
16:28
SPEAKER_00: Aubrey Lynn on July 8th, 2019, said the lamps flickered repeatedly at 2 a.m.
16:34
SPEAKER_00: after they unplugged them.
16:36
SPEAKER_00: Her sister and her mom.
16:38
SPEAKER_00: I came into the room from the bathroom and they told me about it.
16:41
SPEAKER_00: And as they were telling me, the alarm clock started flashing at 2.03 a.m.
16:45
SPEAKER_00: repeatedly.
16:45
SPEAKER_00: No alarm set.
16:46
SPEAKER_00: We unplugged it and turned it off, laughed about it, and then it started flashing at 2.03 a.m.
16:51
SPEAKER_00: again.
16:51
SPEAKER_00: We checked for batteries and there were none.
16:54
SPEAKER_00: My partner came in and hid the clock and convinced my mom it was something else, so she'd go to bed.
16:58
SPEAKER_00: Not on first encounter here, but her it was hers and the deaf spooked her.
17:05
SPEAKER_01: I mean, okay, so they decide to go back and they just think it's like they think it's fun?
17:12
SPEAKER_01: I guess.
17:13
SPEAKER_02: Hey, let's bring a mom who doesn't know what's going on here.
17:15
SPEAKER_02: She'll have a great time.
17:17
SPEAKER_00: Tom on April 6, 2025, said, Sata Edgefield on the first floor, fell asleep around 11 p.m.
17:24
SPEAKER_00: At first I was awoken by the sounds of partying guests, but by 12 all voices subsided.
17:28
SPEAKER_00: I was having trouble sleeping and got a heavy feeling as if someone was outside our room.
17:33
SPEAKER_00: I began hearing loud banging and then a plastic bag being opened, followed by footsteps and wheels of a cart being pushed down the hall.
17:40
SPEAKER_00: Midnight housekeeping?
17:41
SPEAKER_00: I still couldn't sleep, and again the same sounds of metal clinging with a housekeeping cart continued.
17:47
SPEAKER_00: I fell asleep and am woken up again by the sound of whistling and sweeping, all in a three-step, four-sweep, whistle while you work pattern.
17:55
SPEAKER_00: Can't sleep, and down the hall is the sound of an old phone ringing.
17:58
SPEAKER_00: There is a hall phone, but the ring sounded like the days when phones rang with the bell.
18:02
SPEAKER_00: The ring stops and there is running footsteps.
18:05
SPEAKER_00: The footsteps stop outside my door and I hear a female voice speaking, but has a strange echo to it, devoid of a tone, like a hum.
18:12
SPEAKER_00: After one more visit from housekeeping, the sound of a ticking clock not in my room is heard, only to go silent a minute later.
18:19
SPEAKER_00: I managed to get a few winks of sleep, and in the morning I told my wife of the bizarre sounds, thinking she'd slept through them all.
18:25
SPEAKER_00: Turns out during the few moments of sleep I got, she heard strange wooden tapping up and down the hall.
18:30
SPEAKER_00: Seems like someone is still on duty around there.
18:35
SPEAKER_00: That reminds me of Dad's Italy housekeeper.
18:38
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
18:39
SPEAKER_01: But wouldn't you go look in the hallway?
18:40
SPEAKER_00: Like see if there's noise like some people have like gone up to look because they're like, what is going on in the hallway?
18:46
SPEAKER_00: And there's no one there.
18:48
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you pack your shit and go.
18:51
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
18:52
SPEAKER_02: Or you just blind fire through the door next guy next time it gets knocked on.
18:57
SPEAKER_00: Mick and Minimans can either confirm or deny that their Edgefield location is haunted, but it's spot in the top ten most haunted hotels in the US speaks for itself.
19:06
SPEAKER_00: If you aren't brave enough to stay overnight, you can enjoy one of the ten restaurants and bars on the property, go wine tasting in their tasting room, relax in their soaking pool, or play 18 holes on the golf course that's on the property.
19:18
SPEAKER_02: Oh.
19:19
SPEAKER_02: Okay, maybe we should go.
19:22
SPEAKER_00: I really wish that they had the ghost log updated digitally.
19:27
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I could not find any entries or even like pictures of entries, which sucks, but yep, that's uh make a minimum's edge field.
19:40
SPEAKER_00: And I didn't know that it used to be like an old infirmary.
19:44
SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
19:45
SPEAKER_01: Or a farm home farm.
19:47
SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
19:48
SPEAKER_01: Poor farm.
19:49
SPEAKER_02: With a TB ward.
19:51
SPEAKER_02: With a TB ward.
19:52
SPEAKER_02: Okay, so like dozens of people died then.
19:53
SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
19:54
SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, people yeah, people definitely died there.
19:57
SPEAKER_00: Like that's there's no argument.
20:02
SPEAKER_02: I guess if I had T B maybe I'd be puffing on cigars too.
20:05
SPEAKER_01: No my no you wouldn't.
20:08
SPEAKER_02: No?
20:09
SPEAKER_01: I just think at this point, I mean, especially since you haven't been, you you should probably go and um you know, check check it out for yourself and you wouldn't go?
20:19
SPEAKER_01: I mean, like I said, I'll go there for an event or I'll go there and have dinner or to the winery.
20:24
SPEAKER_01: I'm not staying the night.
20:26
SPEAKER_01: No.
20:27
SPEAKER_01: Why would I subject myself to that?
20:28
SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't like that.
20:29
SPEAKER_01: That wouldn't be fun.
20:30
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, let's get sleep deprived.
20:33
SPEAKER_01: Plus, you know, when you look for things like that, they rarely come.
20:37
SPEAKER_01: So that I mean, I just feel like that would, you know, that wouldn't be in the spirit, no pun intended, of of how this, you know, supposed to work.
20:46
SPEAKER_01: So but looking in the through their ghost log book would be interesting.
20:51
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
20:52
SPEAKER_01: But I'm not I'm not compelled to stay there now.
20:57
SPEAKER_02: I feel like it's the opposite.
20:58
SPEAKER_02: I think if you're looking for it, it comes.
21:00
SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's it.
21:01
SPEAKER_02: Because your mind just plays tricks on you and like that one guy probably just had insomnia and he knew that it was like a haunted place, so it was just doing whatever.
21:08
SPEAKER_00: People don't know until afterwards and they're like, Yeah, this weird experience.
21:12
SPEAKER_01: I didn't know before I went there and stayed there.
21:14
SPEAKER_01: I don't, yeah.
21:15
SPEAKER_02: That was only three years after it opened.
21:16
SPEAKER_02: Like that couldn't have been that haunted.
21:18
SPEAKER_01: I don't I think it's kind of like widely I think it was haunted by then because it's haunted from the things that happened in previous years.
21:25
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
21:26
SPEAKER_00: Also, it's kind of widely known that McMinimans choose their location space.
21:30
SPEAKER_01: Right, based on if it's creepy or strange.
21:32
SPEAKER_00: They have a weird history.
21:35
SPEAKER_01: You should ask Aunt Jill, because um, that's why we were there.
21:39
SPEAKER_01: We were there for her first engagement party.
21:42
SPEAKER_01: That's why we stayed there.
21:44
SPEAKER_01: So she might actually know about some of the history, and that's why she likes it.
21:48
SPEAKER_02: Isn't there a McMinwins and Bend that was built on like a a mental institution or something like that?
21:54
SPEAKER_02: The one with the um the like spa, the baths or whatever.
22:00
SPEAKER_00: There's a few that have baths.
22:01
SPEAKER_00: There's like the Kennedy School in Portland.
22:03
SPEAKER_00: That one has a bath.
22:04
SPEAKER_00: They have deadline.
22:06
SPEAKER_00: They do?
22:07
SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
22:08
SPEAKER_01: They recently this one in my bag.
22:09
SPEAKER_00: I think they also have a whiskey.
22:11
SPEAKER_00: I think they have a whiskey distillery on property now, too.
22:15
SPEAKER_01: Well then we absolutely are going.
22:17
SPEAKER_00: They have like a ton, they have a movie theater.
22:19
SPEAKER_00: I was like, geez.
22:21
SPEAKER_00: I have a million things to do there.
22:22
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, how many restaurants?
22:24
SPEAKER_02: Nine, like 13?
22:25
SPEAKER_00: I think 10 restaurants.
22:26
SPEAKER_00: Bars and restaurants.
22:28
SPEAKER_00: There's 10.
22:29
SPEAKER_00: That might not be.
22:31
SPEAKER_02: Oh, this is like a whole campus then.
22:33
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
22:34
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
22:35
SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's a large property.
22:36
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they hold they hold outside events like at an amphitheater.
22:41
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's that's like a music venue.
22:43
SPEAKER_02: Well, how big is the hotel?
22:45
SPEAKER_01: Um, it's like uh big estate.
22:48
SPEAKER_01: Like it's like an estate.
22:49
SPEAKER_01: And then there's I think some side houses.
22:51
SPEAKER_00: I was gonna yeah, I was gonna ask, do they have rooms in the other side?
22:55
SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, it wasn't true.
22:57
SPEAKER_02: Can you like buy a place there?
22:59
SPEAKER_01: Like is it like resonance is at No no, it's it's uh it's its own, it's its own property.
23:04
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's also it's also on like the National Registry of Historic Places.
23:10
SPEAKER_00: Because it was almost torn down before the McMinnan brothers bought it, but then like the city petitioned and said this did a lot for people, it has quite a lot of history and it should be saved.
23:24
SPEAKER_01: No.
23:25
SPEAKER_01: So Angelle said she heard about something about a lady in a rocker on the porch.
23:29
SPEAKER_01: She said from the working farm days.
23:31
SPEAKER_01: She responded really fast.
23:35
SPEAKER_02: It's about Edgefield, come on.
23:39
SPEAKER_02: She had a sixth sense the text was coming through.
23:42
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:43
SPEAKER_02: She anticipated that she was gonna be probably had a dream about it last night in preparation.
23:49
SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I guess believability and creepy level.
23:53
SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'll do believability first.
23:55
SPEAKER_01: Like I mean, do I do I believe it?
23:58
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
23:58
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm I I'm sure I'm sure.
24:00
SPEAKER_01: I mean, we know the history of it, though.
24:04
SPEAKER_01: And much like the lighthouse, the personal accounts, you know, that we that we know people have said, like I there's no reason to dispute that.
24:14
SPEAKER_01: Um, the first story you read about the person in the closet, like that, that would have been an absolute no.
24:20
SPEAKER_01: Like, yep, call the cops.
24:21
SPEAKER_01: Would have been leaving.
24:23
SPEAKER_01: What are the cops gonna do?
24:24
SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
24:26
SPEAKER_02: The cops are gonna arrest the guy.
24:27
SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
24:28
SPEAKER_01: So I'll give it a 10 out of 10 for believability, Garrett?
24:32
SPEAKER_02: I would give it a seven believability.
24:43
SPEAKER_01: Billy, you think that it's it might not be believable, or you mean just the types of stories?
24:48
SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's a creepy place.
24:50
SPEAKER_02: I think that people might be overdoing it.
24:53
SPEAKER_01: Embellishing.
24:54
SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
24:54
SPEAKER_01: Okay, I could see that.
24:56
SPEAKER_02: Doing it for the story.
24:57
SPEAKER_02: I mean, McMinimans leans into it, like, yeah, this is a creepy haunted place.
25:01
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, everybody hyping or doesn't it?
25:03
SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think it would just be a creepy place, period, regardless of what it's haunted or not.
25:07
SPEAKER_02: That's what I mean.
25:07
SPEAKER_02: That's why my creepy level is gonna be higher than believability, but we're doing believability.
25:11
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
25:11
SPEAKER_01: Okay.
25:12
SPEAKER_01: Okay, so okay, do creepy.
25:14
SPEAKER_01: You go first, creepy.
25:17
SPEAKER_02: Oh, ten out of ten.
25:19
SPEAKER_02: I mean, this is a like hundred and some year old building.
25:22
SPEAKER_02: Uh, if it creaks and groans, I'm good.
25:25
SPEAKER_00: Uh and who knows what happened in there?
25:27
SPEAKER_01: Just because we don't really have records of well, we know.
25:30
SPEAKER_01: I mean, while good things may have happened at some, you know, at some point.
25:35
SPEAKER_02: A lot of people were dying then.
25:36
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's a lot of bad things that happened over all these years, years and years and years.
25:40
SPEAKER_01: I agree.
25:41
SPEAKER_01: Creepy, I'm more than ten out of ten.
25:45
SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna pull a Friday bears again, but I'll I'll save that for something egregious.
25:49
SPEAKER_02: But I'll 1300 out of ten.
25:52
SPEAKER_01: So ten out of ten.
25:54
SPEAKER_01: And I think it is creepy.
25:55
SPEAKER_01: I mean, just being there, I had no idea of the history of it when I stayed there the first time.
25:59
SPEAKER_01: You know, I just didn't know I didn't nor did I did I even probably care.
26:03
SPEAKER_01: I just knew that we were going to a place and I thought, um, I I just I just did not like it at all.
26:10
SPEAKER_01: And from the from the creaks in the floor to the oldness of it to the lack of, you know, like public or just private private private bathrooms, yeah.
26:20
SPEAKER_01: I I just I just really didn't like any of it.
26:22
SPEAKER_01: And it's you're far away from things, you know, it's it's not super close.
26:27
SPEAKER_01: So it I'm you know, I'm just a I'm a city girl.
26:32
SPEAKER_00: Mom, it's like 20 minutes outside of Portland.
26:35
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it feels longer.
26:37
SPEAKER_01: It does, it feels far.
26:40
SPEAKER_01: And I and I know it's not, but at the time it did, you know.
26:42
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I was in 20 something.
26:44
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess that's so it it just felt like where are we going?
26:47
SPEAKER_01: This seems far away.
26:49
SPEAKER_01: We could have been someplace in downtown Portland instead.
26:52
SPEAKER_01: We go to this place where we're having dinner and then staying the night.
26:55
SPEAKER_01: It just felt like a lot.
26:59
SPEAKER_02: I want to add that to my creepy level too.
27:01
SPEAKER_02: Imagine getting bubble guts, you get the runs, have to use the bathroom.
27:06
SPEAKER_02: There's someone in there in the middle of the night.
27:07
SPEAKER_02: And there's someone in there.
27:08
SPEAKER_02: It's a ghost in there, or it's locked.
27:10
SPEAKER_02: I mean, it could be like locked from the inside, nobody in there.
27:12
SPEAKER_01: Like I mean, thing is it's a ghost, so it's not just going only gonna be in the closet or in the something, right?
27:17
SPEAKER_01: It's me.
27:18
SPEAKER_01: It's all over.
27:20
SPEAKER_02: Like, imagine you go to like waffle stomp it down the drain in the shower, or you got a ghost coming up grabbing you.
27:26
SPEAKER_00: Actually, there was a story of someone, their towel got grabbed while they were in the shower.
27:29
SPEAKER_00: Oh, give me a break.
27:30
SPEAKER_02: See, yeah, no, thanks.
27:32
SPEAKER_02: See, that could just be some bum who went in without a towel and was like, Yeah, you know what, let me grab this.
27:38
SPEAKER_00: No, I just I don't I don't think so.
27:42
SPEAKER_00: But so I think we'll have to go there.
27:45
SPEAKER_00: If we can go to the lighthouse, this is a little bit closer.
27:49
SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's way closer in the lighthouse, yeah.
27:51
SPEAKER_01: Uh like I said, I'll go there and eat, and I'll go to the you know, yeah, we can go there and have the line afternoon wine tasting the boys can play.
27:56
SPEAKER_01: The boys can play golf, but we're not staying the night.
27:59
SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
27:59
SPEAKER_01: Great, let's go.
28:00
SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
28:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm pretty sure Heather said that she had gone here before, but I don't remember what her story was, so we'll have to ask.
28:09
SPEAKER_01: Well, we'll get it scheduled.
28:11
SPEAKER_00: We will get it scheduled.
28:13
SPEAKER_00: All right.
