- 0:05[SPEAKER_01]: I welcome back to the channel, others receiving votes on sportsillestratedside.com, I'm half-porting, and I am joined once again by Gene Wojahowski.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_01]: Let me tell you how the off-season worked here on this podcast.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: who had to walk through the minefield of Brendan Sorsby, who had to deal with Congress, who had to work through all the court mayhem.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: That was me.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_01]: Jean meanwhile was off playing golf in Scotland, writing a book promoting that, landing a gig with Big Ten Network.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_01]: Jean were thrilled to see you back, but what the hell have you been doing for the last several months?
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: You know what, I've been feeling very sorry for you in a way.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: I've listened to the podcast each week, but there was one, I think it was the August 10th one, where I think the main topics were the recent CFP meetings.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: the Protect College Sports Act, the FBI in the NCAA working together on something and I just pulled out the rosary and I just started saying how Mary's for you.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: I just, I just filled off for you.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was that kind of off season.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: Let me tell you, you know, we rarely talked any football.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: There were way too many dysfunctional things happening in the sport, which tends to be the case.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: And it is, I guess the chaos is part of the allure, but boy did the chaos get old.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: So we are thrilled to have you back.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think we might have it the end of last season promoted your book a little bit, but tell us about all carry that did publish in the spring here, correct?
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: It did.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_00]: It published shortly for the master's started and it's a golf novel and it's doing pretty well and I'm pleasantly surprised by the support.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: It's been it's been a lot of fun and was built around sort of the masters and a set of magical clubs and a father's son relationship and people seem to to enjoy it.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: So thank you for mentioning and I appreciate it.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, excellent.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: Look for it.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: Pick it up in jeans previous lives.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: He was an excellent golf reporter and Obviously worked on ESPN College Game Day and even wrote he typed for a living for a while for ESPN.com and various other outlets going back to prehistory I believe you did you did you actually cover a new rock near was that were you shortly after jacette by he
- 2:43[SPEAKER_00]: You know, just so you know, you're making fun of me and that's fine.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: You know, go ahead ages and you'll be hearing from HRson.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, he's from my area.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: And do you remember what his nickname was?
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: I don't.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: The weed nice man.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: we see that very famous photo of him.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: Well, he's from my town that I live in in Illinois.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: We know, no, I so I do have a little frame photo of him and he sort of the patron saint of football in my part of the Midwest.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: about that.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's the other thing.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: The other update on Gene's life as we all get reacquainted with him as he was he was he was in Knoxville last year teaching at University of Tennessee.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: Still going to be teaching there, but you're spending more of your time back at at home and sweet home Chicago, correct.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, actually here this week.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: We're doing it from the beautiful courtyard Mary on in downtown Knoxville.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_00]: So hey, you have it.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: It gets no better.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: There you go.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: I hope you're out.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: painting the checkered board end zones at some point on your stay there.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so this podcast, we're just we're going to do a bunch of prediction stuff.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: This is our our table center.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_01]: our chance to be wildly wrong and for everybody to take notes and come back and tell us exactly how wrong we were at the end of the season.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: This being called football will be wrong plenty.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: Matter of fact, actually, yes, that's one other thing I remember from last year.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: Jean was wrong the most in our picks.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: I believe Brian Fisher actually did the best job and I was in the middle and
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I did get the dumb bear finger.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: You got the bear.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's a bad bear week.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_01]: That was your second call.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: What is what the hat today?
- 4:36[SPEAKER_01]: All the hat.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: good call.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: I need to explain so I'm toying with the idea.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: We can crowd source this with the listenership viewership and I apologize to the viewers who have to look at us every week, but I'm toying with the idea of wearing a different college teams hat every week.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: And this week, Murray state racers.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we're starting big here.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: FCS scrappy bunch out of the far west corner of the state of Kentucky.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: So this week Murray you never know what could be next week.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_01]: I've got I've got I've got I think enough right now to get through the season, but if I need to buy a couple more late in the year.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be on the expense account.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: So who can I like it?
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 5:20[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's college colors time.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: Let's let's wear what you got.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: And so we're going to start in now with with a bunch of predictions.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_01]: We're all over the map here, but we're going to start with this, Gene, the AP top 25 made official what I had already seen kind of developing is that
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's these seven and then there's a drop off and apparently the minds of everyone, including sports illustrated with our preseason top 25 to eight to 25, but these seven teams in some order Ohio State Oregon Indiana Texas Georgia Notre Dame Miami
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: Some commonalities there, they all either have returning big time quarterbacks or landed a big time quarterback in the portal Miami and Indiana would be the ones that went into the portal and both have done that really really well a quarterback in the past.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: So we all know the preseason top 25s do not play out that way out of that group of seven which one flops.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: mean like, uh, implosion like, uh, what, I think I wrote some of them down.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: Number two Penn State last year.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: Number four Clemson, number nine LSU, number 13 South Carolina.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, are you just talking about total implosion?
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and I'm talking about the end up.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: outside of the title picture probably, you know, certainly outside of the top 10.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if you got a total implosion, we'll take that.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we're a band of crash scenes here.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: So, okay.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, well, I don't see.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, a flop in the classic sense, uh, out of those top seven.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, I said that last year that I did not see a flop out of the, out of the favorites and guess what happened.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_00]: So things always happen, but if you're making me choose between picking a flop or.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: attending a bellachick presser.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: I'll go with the flop thing.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: These are like, can hold concerns, okay?
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't want you to think, you know, they're doomed.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_00]: But if I had to pick,
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: three, and then I'll narrow it down to one, Indiana.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: And not because I have any doubts about Kirk's Agnetti and his idea, you know, we're going to hunt down complacency.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure they're going to do that.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: But it's so difficult.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, incredibly difficult.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: to repeat his national champions.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's only been three of them in the last what 31 years and they're going to take everybody's best shot.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: They are nobody's mystery team anymore.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody knows what they can do.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: two Texas.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: And I only throw Texas in there from the standpoint if they lose against Ohio State early again, does that just does all the negativity bubble instantly to the surface again with that program?
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: And then I think third is Miami.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: And they lost so many good players to the NFL.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: They do have another new quarterback.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: And yes, they have shown that they can put a new quarterbacks and not miss a beat.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: But they're still as a transition involved there.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm not big at looking at the schedule and saying this determines everything, but they are at Clemson, they are at Notre Dame.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: And those are potential landmines for them.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: So if I had to pick one, I would probably just say Indiana again, just from the standpoint of how tough it is to do what they've done in the past two years.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: I hear an unapologetic hater, that's what I hear.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk to coach SIG about this.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you go over and you just, you get the bloom into an entailment, please.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we'll stick him on you.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: No, I mean, look, your reasoning regarding Indiana certainly makes sense and they are,
- 9:50[SPEAKER_01]: you know, they are integrating another new quarterback three or can you can you absolutely hit it out of the park every single time, although saying that his history was in James Madison he did too.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they brought a new guy plug them in and they just did great, but the schedules really hard for them too.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, not the non conference, we know that they don't play anybody.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, but they've got Oregon, they've got Ohio State.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: Um,
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: So, no, actually, I don't think they do have Oregon this year, but anyhow, I get that.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna lean toward Texas.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I agree, pinhole concerns is a pretty good way to put it.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's not like you look and say, oh, man, they're in trouble.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: But I look at this Texas season a little bit like, I looked at Penn State last year, was like the eggs have piled high in the basket.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_01]: arched the way he finished last season gives everybody that optimism.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then I think that the best year in the portal of anybody in terms of adding talent around him and to help the offense.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then they added machine bios on defense, who I just absolutely adore at linebacker.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: So like I just get the feeling like the expectations and the pressure have ratcheted it up to the point
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: panic sets in or pressure or negativity and if that Ohio State game goes bad at home, look out.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_01]: And then two weeks after that, they are at Tennessee.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_01]: And as you know, teams go in there in the Nailin Stadium, good teams and they lose.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I've seen him storm the field the time or two after big wins.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: Then you got Red River.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: And if by then the wheels are coming off, look out.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_01]: That's that's my only concern there is.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_01]: I just think
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: a chance for early like mayhem to set in and for people to start losing confidence quickly.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: So again, by no means convinced that's going to happen, but if you make me pick one of those seven schools, which I did make you pay, I made the rundown.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_01]: I just made myself pick it.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: That's what we're going with.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Gene.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_01]: One second, Pat, you were right about Indiana.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_01]: They did not play Oregon this season.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_01]: All right, okay, thank you for correcting the record there.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: But still, the Ohio State Games and the Orange, they've got USC.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: I know coming to Bloomington, I think they're at Michigan.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: So they do have a lot still.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're right.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: You're getting a very good league.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: Have a lot at UW also.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, yes, which boy, that has been a tough place for teams to go.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_01]: Now, coming from outside of the top seven eight through 25 are unranked.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: Fine.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: Tell me who rises who you're looking at there.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: So are we, are we say I'm sorry to do this to you?
- 12:53[SPEAKER_00]: Are we trying to pick up the next Indiana here?
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: Or just tell me,
- 12:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we're going to get to the next in the app soon, but give me another team that's ranked that you think maybe it's just that second tier or third tier that crashes in there and is a contender.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_01]: I like BYU.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_00]: I have BYU, Michigan, USC, Bama, kind of in a cluster of teams that I thought were similar
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: But BYU really intrigues me this season.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: And they certainly don't play in the kind of conference that is going to provide the difficulties that USC is going to face or Bana is going to face in their schedule.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: And I think we can all agree.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: There's a reason why Taki is always on everybody's short list of replacement coaches.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: They have a deep roster this year.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: I just think they're a team that, you know, we could turn around and they're right there.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: I like it.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: I like it.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to stay in the same conference, uh, and say Texas tech, which didn't too far outside of that top seven, but I think everybody jumped off the bandwagon when source be, uh, imploded.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: But there's a lot of talent everywhere else.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_01]: And William and who's going to be the backup quarterback who's stepping in, uh, maybe not game one.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see he's recovering from an injury last season.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_01]: But they have a lot of talent and the schedule,
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: Holy moly.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's it's almost pathetic.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_01]: I just think they're going to pile up a lot of wins.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_01]: They don't play you talk.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: They don't play BYU in the regular season.
- 14:44[SPEAKER_01]: All of the teams that are picked to finish in the upper part of the big 12, they get at home.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: That's Houston.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's Arizona.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_01]: That's TCU.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's Arizona State.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: So if they get past Houston on September 18th, Gina,
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: when they get to a big 12-champage game again and where we're all accustomed to discussing that schedule others.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I have no problem with the choice.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_00]: I just happen to think the YU is at least an equal with Texas Tech, but again, you make a good point about the schedule.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just trying this here.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: I've just been fooled by the schedule arguments so many times.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_00]: I think everything you're saying is true.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, if it plays out that way, I don't think anyone will be surprised, but there's always just something that happens, something that we don't anticipate, and so I'm just trying to try not to make that such a huge part of the equation this time.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, that's, you know, that's the the biggest trap I guess in college sports and we all do it, you know, any time your team, your favorite team wins a big game, you start looking to schedule, oh, we can win that one, we can win that one, we can win that one, the schedule's easy and it turns out that way or the schedule's way too hard and then, you know, say teams.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: things happen.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_01]: That's why schedules change.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: That's why preseason predictions are worth what they are except for these.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_01]: These are probably the most valuable preseason exactly.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think that goes without saying doesn't it, right?
- 16:28[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: We've got to get to the the conference situation here, Gino, for the first time since 2015,
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: No SEC team got a number one vote in the preseason AP poll in 2015 Ohio State was returning champion and had everybody back and got all 61 votes and then of course did not win the big ten and did not make the playoffs.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: So what's that worth nothing also an SEC team won the championship that year Alabama.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_01]: But still given recent history.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: Big 10s one three straight SEC hasn't even played in the title game does this mean something nothing or everything about the state of the SEC Ohio State 41st place votes Oregon 14 Notre Dame six
- 17:22[SPEAKER_00]: Miami won.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm old enough to know a band called the who and they had a great song called won't get fooled again.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think the voters look at a team like Texas.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: And said, we're not going to get full of again on Texas.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: And we're just not going to vote.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_00]: We're not going to give a first place vote.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: Thing is, I don't blame any of the voters for choosing the teams that they did.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a little surprised at Georgia.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe didn't get one stray.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: First place vote.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: Does it mean anything?
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't mean a damn thing.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_00]: And so, I mean, I don't care if I'm Georgia, I'm using it as ammunition, I guess, as every other coach would try to do.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: But it's the AP preseason poll that barely means anything, and certainly who gets number one votes means even less to me.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, no, that, I mean, this is not written handed down on stone tablets by any means, things changed drastically.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_01]: We're all guessing in August here, but it is interesting.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I agree with you, the like Georgia got nothing and Texas got nothing and there might be some of that cynicism with Texas.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_01]: Georgia, this has got to be, I haven't looked, but it's got to be the first time maybe since 2020 they did not get a first, first place vote coming into the year.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_01]: But you know, that's they're just George has been consistently excellent.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like if if if you want a team that's not going to just absolutely crush your hopes and dreams for the last five straight years or six straight years, it's Georgia.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_01]: But I think after they
- 19:11[SPEAKER_01]: got beaten in the first round of the playoffs, so their first playoff game for the last two years and the quarter finals that people said, yeah, they might need a little retooling, and maybe they don't have the pieces to do it.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see, I think they're gonna be very good, but I would not pick them number one either.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: I agree, it means zero.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_01]: We will all be changing our minds after Labor Day.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll check, what is Georgia Ring?
- 19:36[SPEAKER_00]: Third, uh, Georgia,
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see, let me get the rankings here.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_01]: As always, I am super prepared.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_01]: I think they might be lower than that.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_00]: No, they're third, you're right, yes, they are.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: So they are fairly ahead of Notre Dame, just.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Notre Dame was below them and got what was it?
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: Six first six votes.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, make sense of all about their third to get no first place votes, teams below them got first place votes.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_00]: So, whatever.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: And that I'd be interested.
- 20:14[SPEAKER_01]: I need to go back and look at the voter by voter on Indiana, which had eight first place votes, but it's number six, which means there's a lot of gene.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_01]: What's your house keys out there?
- 20:24[SPEAKER_01]: Don't believe in the Hoosiers, aiding on the Hoosiers.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm wildly misinterpreting on you just for the time to say, you know what, if it increases listenership, I'm all for it.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: There you go.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_00]: You will you have to do exactly.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_01]: Well, speaking of this years in the Anna, who's it going to be?
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: Is there is there a team out there that you've looked at and says that could be the next I you?
- 20:53[SPEAKER_00]: Okay,
- 20:57[SPEAKER_00]: We have to start where I U was last year.
- 21:00[SPEAKER_00]: And they were number 20 in the APP preseason, which was okay.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: So that's where I started, right?
- 21:06[SPEAKER_00]: Now you may be above and that's fine, but for to do it the right way, the true way, the credible way.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_00]: You can do it your crappy way, but I'm gonna do it the real way.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna start at 20.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_00]: I actually looked at your hometown, Louisville Cardinals.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought, all right, there's a lot to like there.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_00]: Had Penn State been a little lower in the rankings, I would have thought about it.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_00]: But I went with our podcast namesake, others receiving votes, and that down there, and Paul Finebonds going to hate this.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm taking Clemson as this year's Indiana.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, look, if you're going to do it, take a big swing.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: I just think that program has enough of a foundation to get itself back where it was.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_00]: I also, I like Tom Allen as a deaf.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's a coordinator.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see them, they've had some troubles at Death Valley, and I think that worm turns.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_00]: And so yeah, I'm taking some leaves of faith here as far as what has to happen.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like it's not a bad bet for high odds, but Indiana, who saw that coming except maybe you, because you were on Indiana early last year, nobody can be in Clemson, but I like Clemson, and I don't think there's any way they go seven and six again.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: Well, suffice to say, we disagree on Clemson.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: I will get to them later.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: But we're not supposed to agree on everything.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: No, no.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_01]: We won't.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_01]: We don't.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: And we will have some Clemson discussion.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's for sure.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 23:13[SPEAKER_01]: I looked at this, I think, somewhat similarly to the way you did, except, I got like two two categories of the ways to look at this.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_01]: One is a program that is a historic loser that last year broke through and then takes that next step this year.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's because that's what Indiana did, right?
- 23:34[SPEAKER_01]: They were terrible and then they went 11 and 2 and then they went 16 and 0.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: The program that fits that profile, Virginia, which won the ACC last year, regular season, you know, came out of nowhere and did that with Tony Elliott.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: They replaced their quarterback as if he as Indiana did, may even get better at that position.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: I am not buying.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not saying that they're going to be Indiana, but if you're looking for somebody that fits that profile.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_00]: they fit that profile, but in terms of your same Virginia's fits the IU template for progression.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, the IU trajectory year one, well we're all of a sudden pretty good year two, oh my gosh we're very good.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: But the other team that you mentioned Penn State and I put Penn State in there, new coach brings over a bunch of his guys from his last school schedule.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: Really good schedule from a big 10 perspective where you don't play in the Anna and you don't play Oregon, you don't play Ohio State, which I think gives Matt Campbell a chance to get off to a great start.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_01]: I I'm not sure they have good enough players either, but but in terms of again what we're looking for of somebody who's who's going to rock it up.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: from somewhere else.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_01]: Now, my main thing is there is no next Indiana.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_01]: I think everybody has been sitting out there saying, yeah, who's going to be the next, this ain't happening again.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_01]: It was such a comet streak out of nowhere on one that I don't think is over because I'm I'm pretty bullish on the Hoosiers, but, uh, then the apologies to hate Northwestern keep trying.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_01]: Wake Forest, go, you know, everybody out there, your historic loser program.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: I hope it's you, it's not gonna be you.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_00]: So, just in review, first of all, no wide out jokes, please about Penn State, right now.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_00]: But you made me jump off the cliff with Clemson.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_00]: And then you do the, there's not gonna be a next Indiana thing.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: So that's right.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I got it.
- 25:45[SPEAKER_00]: Good.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: Well, and for full transparency, which we're all about here, this was Gene suggested topic.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: So, Mike, Mike, did you go first?
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: It wouldn't have been a short topic, if I just say it's not going to happen.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: So, I know, I love the discussion point.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I don't think this is replicable.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_01]: We'll find out.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_01]: Regina, we're going to go conference
- 26:14[SPEAKER_01]: Give me a serious pick who you think's going to win and then give me a flyer pick somebody from a little further down in the preseason pecking order that you think can can win it.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: Let's start with the SEC.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: Well, despite all of our can hold concerns on picking taxes and my flyer pick with Bama count as a flyer pick, not really.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, kind of.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they're ranked outside the top 10, which is unusual for them.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if that counts, I'm taking Bama.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_00]: If it doesn't count,
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel a lot better about this pick if they weren't losing some defense of players recently to injuries, I would say Tennessee would be the flyer flyer pick.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_00]: There you go.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_00]: If that one counts, that's what I'm going with.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Bama.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I'm going with Texas as well because I do think on paper, it's all there for them.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_01]: As mentioned earlier, if it somehow goes off, it could go way off.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's on.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_01]: My flyer pick is LSU.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_01]: You'll say, Kiffy, yes, it go on finally wins a championship of some kind.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_00]: Wouldn't that be something?
- 27:29[SPEAKER_01]: It would be something.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_01]: It would be something that come in rank number 11.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_01]: They did great work in the portal as well.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: Retain some very, very good players.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_01]: including DJ Pickett, where's number five, which of course turn Jaden Daniels into a bitter ex of LSU, once nobody to wear his number, that's a whole other story.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_01]: If you weren't, or such a long time there, DJ, he put in two entire seasons.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: at LSU, two years is kind of a long time by current college standards, you know, whatever.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_01]: That was hilarious.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I, you know, I'll take a flyer with LSU.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_01]: A flyer's a man for.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: Big 10. Who you got?
- 28:16[SPEAKER_01]: Who's your, your serious pick?
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: Who's your flyer pick?
- 28:19[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I know everyone's taken Ohio State and I
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: very close.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_00]: And just because I don't want to go chalk on everything, I'm going to take Oregon, won't be surprised if Ohio State wins, but I feel good about Oregon.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: My flyer pick would be Penn State.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_00]: I do think that Matt Campbell, the pedigree as a coach and the experience that he brought
- 29:00[SPEAKER_00]: But I think there's a lot to like about Penn State to come out of nowhere.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I can't dispute that.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_01]: And it's, I mean, like as far as my serious pick, I think you could be any of the top three.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_01]: It could be Ohio State, it could be Oregon, but I'm taking an in the end, man.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_01]: Somebody beat him until somebody beats them.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: I am rolling with the Hoosiers.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think they reloaded extremely well and I think that one of our, you know, only in college sports late developments with players being suddenly able to come back for a fifth year even if they were like in NFL training camps Indiana is.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: as big a beneficiary of that as anybody.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: They've got a couple really important defensive guys that are suddenly back in uniform and a tight end and tight ends in area of concern for them.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_00]: So go with the Hoesiers and then we don't know if they can, I mean, that's still up in the
- 30:03[SPEAKER_01]: The NCAA is asked for, you know, that it's on appeal or whatever in Colorado court.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: And they could get nuked today.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's, we are taping this Thursday at 9.38 AM Eastern as of now, those players are eligible.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: You'd like them even before they got them back.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah, no, I love them.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think it, yeah, I got no problem with the pit.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_01]: I am in the first few of the Church of Signatic, and I'm not leaving until I've been given reason to stop there.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: So my flyer, I'm taking Michigan, talk about a sudden coaching upgrade.
- 30:42[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think that it was, you know, terrible circumstances, what happened, and wildly embarrassing for Michigan with
- 30:51[SPEAKER_01]: on cost ward manual his job eventually into this year, but getting Kyle winning him you kidding with what he's done it yet you talk of all places.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's coming in energetic, rejuvenated kind of got pushed out there and he's playing here.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's an unbelievably town of quarterback and Bryce Underwood brings in maybe the best pass rusher in the nation
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: If Michigan's a flyer, they're coming rank number 16, I'll take, all right, big 12, you know, are you, are you, I'm guessing you're going to be why you here, but yeah, okay, in my flyer, if again, if it's not too high, I like the place, um,
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: and a lot of incentive to prove people that, hey, he was great coach, but we're still a great program.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_00]: So that would be my choice.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I'll be fascinated to watch that the Morgan Scally led youths there.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_01]: And they do, they retain their quarterback, Devon Dampier, who's
- 32:09[SPEAKER_01]: very, very good.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_01]: Excellent college level quarterback.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm I'm I'm going to go Texas Tech for the aforementioned reasons.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think they have loaded their roster and the schedule sets up very nicely for them.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_01]: For my flyer, I'm going with Arizona, which at a sneaky good season last year and brings back no off a feet to a quarterback who may be the most underrated quarterback out there.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's not a bad.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he said three really good years and Brent Brennan, I think got his feet under him last year after a bad first year.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: They're at BYU September 12th.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: Their at Texas Tech, October 31st, tough tough games there.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: So they probably have to win at least one of those to get to a big 12 title game, but that's a flyer with the Wildcats.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_01]: All right, ACC, Jeno.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_00]: All right, is it a big wassy move?
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: If I say, Clemson is the team that's going to be IU and then I don't pick him to win the ACC.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know what, Veronica?
- 33:21[SPEAKER_00]: Who needs consistency in that?
- 33:23[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, you know what?
- 33:24[SPEAKER_00]: It is a wassy move, so I'm going to stick with Clemson.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_00]: All right, my flyer pick is going to be Virginia Tech.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm tempted by them.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'm intrigued, right?
- 33:35[SPEAKER_01]: You know, with Franklin and bringing over some pretty good players from Penn State, their floor immediately raises, I think, Virginia Tech will see where the ceiling is, which has kind of always been the James Franklin thing.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 33:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm clearly, I'm taking Miami there.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: I think they are probably head and shoulders above the rest of the league, but we'll find out.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_01]: And then I'm taking Louisville from my flyer.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: You mentioned them earlier.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_01]: I think they have a great deal of talent.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: The weird thing, Jeff Brom, who's a great quarterback, coach has been hit and missed with his quarterbacks.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: He's gone.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_01]: Go on.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_01]: and probably one out of three has hit, but if Lincoln King holds from Ohio State comes in, couldn't win the job over say in there and plays well, and he's going to be a little more athletic, a little more dual threat than that elevates them and gives him a chance.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Gina, who's your group of six representative in the playoff?
- 34:42[SPEAKER_00]: This was tough.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_00]: I whittled it down to Boisey and Navy.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_00]: And I went with Navy not because of anything Boisey does wrong.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I just like, I mean, you, you talked about a signetty and trajectory and a template.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_00]: What Brian Newberry has done at Navy has just been so impressive to me.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_00]: And they, they continue to get better each season.
- 35:10[SPEAKER_00]: So, if I have to pick a team, I'm going with the midshipman.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_01]: Well, damn it, and he cheated off my notes here clearly, so that's all my, which I just don't want.
- 35:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, we will.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: For sure.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_01]: But wouldn't that be fun to have a service Academy in the plan?
- 35:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, that would be tremendous.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm I'm down with Navy.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_01]: I grew with you.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_01]: They built a program.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's very solid.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_01]: It lost a great quarterback, but they get the backup.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: Those now, the start of Braxton Woodson is very good.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: And they got almost their whole offensive line back.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_01]: And that is a line of scrimmage team.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm rolling with the middies.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_01]: All right, this is another gene, what you're asking special here.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_01]: This was his suggestion.
- 35:54[SPEAKER_01]: I like it.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_01]: What is your preseason prediction at Peeve?
- 36:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so sick.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_00]: of listening to fans, so-called experts who say the AP precies in top 25,
- 36:14[SPEAKER_00]: It influences the college football playoff selection committee.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_00]: Drive me out of my mind.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's absolutely wrong.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_00]: And here's how I know that.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_00]: Indiana was ranked number 20 last year.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_00]: Texas Tech was ranked number 23 last year.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_00]: If there was some sort of huge prejudice about teams that were ranked lower, those teams would have never made it to the playoff.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_00]: So you've got to quit taking the AP Top 25 poll so seriously, and I guarantee you, the people in that room who are making those decisions, I don't even think they look at the, at the poll, I don't even think there's a reason for them to look at the poll, so it just drives me out of my mind.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I know, I'm glad you brought that up because I swear to God, part, and it may be it's part of the fun, but it's also part of the annoyance of college sports is everybody gets so mad about everything.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think related, you know, and the August, so we got nothing else to do other than the wildly overreact to a pole that's going to be outdated as of like September 7th.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_01]: So everybody can chill.
- 37:26[SPEAKER_01]: It does not influence the playoff picture at all.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's fun to talk about.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_00]: It is.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_00]: Great to talk about.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's what we're doing on the show.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_01]: What's yours?
- 37:37[SPEAKER_01]: My peeve is brand name bias.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_01]: People like you that all of a sudden get down on Indiana.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_01]: Think they're float.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: I know the brand name now.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they aren't now.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_01]: No, but they're they're ranked number six preseason, which for a defending champion is low in the playoff era.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_01]: 10 of the 12 national champions were in the top five the next year a lot of more one or two.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_01]: The only two that weren't were Michigan, which had just lost their coach and LSU, which just lost a quarterback that, well, I will say, does resemble Fernando Mendoza in terms of winning the high school being the number one pick.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_01]: But that LSU team also lost your march ace and so many other great players.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_01]: Indiana, I think they are being slightly disrespected at number six.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that if their name were Ohio State and they were coming off last year, 16 and oh,
- 38:35[SPEAKER_01]: They would be one or two.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_01]: So who would you put them ahead of?
- 38:39[SPEAKER_01]: Where would you put them?
- 38:41[SPEAKER_01]: I see.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're going to win the big ten.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I put them as high as two.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think I would right now have them three.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think I would go, well, we'll see.
- 38:50[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk about our national championship pick.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_01]: But I would have, I would have Indiana number three.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think the first.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: What's, what's season story line are you already sick of?
- 39:03[SPEAKER_00]: Oh God, I don't even, the Protect College Sports Act.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_00]: If I hear one more thing about that thing, or anything about congressional intervention, or Ted Cruz, or, no, no more.
- 39:24[SPEAKER_00]: Talk to me when something actually happens.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: Talk to me when there's an actual vote, by the way.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_00]: Can we just do that, maybe?
- 39:31[SPEAKER_00]: So it's, it's been such a slog, like I said, I, I felt so sorry for you.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like there should be a go fund page, go fund me page for you, brush down your, all the people have to report on that on a daily basis because nothing ever happens.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_00]: So when something happens, wake me up.
- 39:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, that was the most maddening thing about it is people get so excited like every little incremental thing.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then it led to, I think where a lot of people thought it was always going to lead, which is so far, take over, yeah, we got nothing.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_01]: So I am with you on that, mine is the eligibility stuff, which I am wildly sick of some new court ruling here there everywhere.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_01]: In an ideal world, I would love to see the coaches say, my team is on the field.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_01]: We're not going back and gimmicking this up and adding guys who got cut by the Seahawks.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_01]: you know, that to me runs into the medical to what college sports is and has been forever.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm just I'm tired of that, but there's no there's no avoiding it.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm not going to also sit here and like ring my hands over it.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's you know, I'm dead.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_01]: The death of Coach football look, we're going to start playing soon.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_01]: Some of those guys are probably going to be on the field, but again, we'll see what happens in court.
- 40:56[SPEAKER_01]: And if they are,
- 40:57[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to live with it.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 40:58[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you're precious.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: You're precious home state of Colorado.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
- 41:03[SPEAKER_00]: You don't did this to us.
- 41:04[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_00]: Judge Sweeney, no relation to Kevin Sweeney was sports illustrated.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_00]: I did ask.
- 41:11[SPEAKER_00]: So that would have been me.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_01]: Here we go.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_01]: By the end of the season, I'll own a apology to blank.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_01]: Who are you going to end up apologizing to, Gene?
- 41:21[SPEAKER_00]: Who do you think?
- 41:22[SPEAKER_00]: Miami.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_00]: Uh-huh, there you go, right?
- 41:25[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, you picked Clemson over us.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, I've already got the station area out, getting the pen fired up, getting crystal balls, uh, office address.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, I'll be writing that soon enough.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_01]: You know what, Mario, he'll keep track, too.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: He'll keep score.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_01]: You may hear from him.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_01]: What do you do?
- 41:46[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm in the same league and that's he'll leave now.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk Clemson.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_01]: on Clemson.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: I said this on the early part with Brian and Kevin that I like last year was I was last year was the prove it year for me about whether Davos still has it and they went seven and six.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_01]: So I am not seeing it.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not feeling it.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not believing it.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think that that program has peaked and is declining, but in terms of the inevitable apology, I am also the guy that gave Davo a D plus that winning was hired when I was at ESPN in like 2010.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_01]: Perhaps the worst take I have ever had been my life and one that I have been reminded of.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Davo has it in his office, like Frank.
- 42:37[SPEAKER_00]: So that's my contribution to Clemson football.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_01]: I'll add another, he can add another frame of this, you know, an audio clip of me burying them once and for all.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's great.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Gina, I've been doing these most intriguing lists.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_01]: People like them, people like lists this time of year, but not best coach, not best quarterback, not best non quarterback, but most intriguing who interests you the most as a coach who's most intriguing to you this year.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I read, I read your, well, I couldn't get through it.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_00]: No, it was, it was a fascinating list and there are a lot of so many interesting games.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_00]: More than I really thought, I mean, like if I would have written down five, I didn't realize there was so many that had such intriguing back stories, but I would have to down to three and then I'll pick one for you.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_00]: Signetti is so intriguing to me because he operates in a vacuum.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_00]: He does not care what the outside world thinks.
- 43:47[SPEAKER_00]: He assesses talent his own way.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_00]: He looks at the world his own way.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_00]: The Google Me comment was quintessential, signetti.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, I'm doing it my way, and I find that just fascinating to me.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_00]: Marcus Freeman,
- 44:09[SPEAKER_00]: the way he's resurrected in a way, a program that wasn't considered cool, is that, I mean, that's probably not the right word, the relevant in a way.
- 44:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, I think cool's a good word, actually.
- 44:22[SPEAKER_00]: And then Kirby smart, the more I listen to him, and look, I don't agree with everything he says, but the more I listen to him, I say, you know what this guy has something to say,
- 44:35[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like he's taking the governor switch off of his thoughts sometimes I think early on in his head coaching career.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_00]: He was careful and now I just think he says what he feels and I really like that about him, but if I had to pick one in plus I want to save dignity for you.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_00]: What Marcus Freeman has done, I think, is really intriguing.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_00]: How he has taken a place that had this sort of feel to it, and he's just turned it, turned that all around, the perception of it, all around to a place to a destination spot now.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that takes a power of a personality, and he has it.
- 45:22[SPEAKER_00]: That's a great point.
- 45:23[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Notre Dame is cooler than it has been in 40 years, I think.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_01]: They have, they have something.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_01]: They've got that that that makes young athletes say that.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_01]: How do I want to go play there?
- 45:36[SPEAKER_00]: I want to put a falka band in the Anna.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_01]: Right, yeah, it's not Miami, it's not Los Angeles, it's not Austin, Texas, it's South Bend.
- 45:46[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I love everything Freeman is doing there.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I'm taking signetti his most intriguing guy.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_01]: He sees number one on the list until proven otherwise.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_01]: But what you said about him is true in part of the absolute intrigue, is he is completely his own self.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_01]: the way he wants without trying to be like anyone else.
- 46:13[SPEAKER_01]: There's some saving there, but that was a long time ago, he coached for saving.
- 46:18[SPEAKER_01]: And he's doing things his way.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_01]: The SI football preview magazine is out now.
- 46:26[SPEAKER_01]: You can buy it.
- 46:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I do have a long, significant piece in there.
- 46:30[SPEAKER_01]: Some pretty fascinating, I thought, insight from
- 46:34[SPEAKER_01]: nosing around his office.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I was waiting for him to come in.
- 46:38[SPEAKER_01]: Tell me one thing that you saw
- 46:41[SPEAKER_01]: just for your attention.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_01]: He won so many coats of the year awards last year that a very prominent one, I don't want to name it, but was back on a side shelf by a thing of Starbucks coffee pods.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like there's a box of coffee pods and a national coat to the year award.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_01]: So we're just going to throw that back there.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right, like we already got six of these.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: Wait, you know, where do we put the seventh?
- 47:05[SPEAKER_01]: Have back by the coffee.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_01]: So, fascinating guy.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm intrigued for sure.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Gene, most intriguing quarterback, what do you got?
- 47:17[SPEAKER_00]: Again, I loved your list.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I will start with my number two and number three, Bryce Underwood and then Sam Lada from LSU.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_00]: those two.
- 47:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think we really know that much about underwood in a way, right?
- 47:33[SPEAKER_00]: Despite his five star bonafides and Sam Levitt is just his how he ended up at LSU and how everything played out was really interesting and he has a personality too that will fit right
- 47:57[SPEAKER_00]: because all the things that you mentioned earlier in the podcast, there is so much everything on his shoulder pads unfairly.
- 48:07[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm really intrigued to see how this year's version of our expanding plays out.
- 48:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
- 48:15[SPEAKER_01]: It was interesting being around him at SEC Media days, two years in a row.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_01]: So, year before, kind of not even charming, this year was a little more guarded.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's some scar tissue built up over some of the criticism from the year before.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_01]: And the line of questioning was certainly different.
- 48:33[SPEAKER_01]: It went from,
- 48:34[SPEAKER_01]: You know, gosh, you're the shiny new thing to hmm, there's some scratches and dense now.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_01]: How you're handling it.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_01]: So it was it's it's an interesting kind of change of dynamic, but there is a lot riding with him there.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_01]: I put Darian Menson number one who's the quarterback at Miami came from Duke in very controversial last minute fashion broken contract with Duke.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:57[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but given what Miami's done with their transfer cubies, you went to the National title game with one of them last year, the year before that came word became the number one pick.
- 49:07[SPEAKER_01]: So I think Mensa, he's in an offense that is, woo, they are low dad.
- 49:12[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see if they block well enough, but, but they have stuff.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_01]: And I, I think Mensa's definitely NFL caliber.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_01]: So he's the guy for me.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_01]: All right, most intriguing non quarterback this list just came out today,
- 49:25[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't seen it yet.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm taking a Cam Coleman at Texas.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we kind of know what he can do, but I'm not sure we fully know what he's capable of doing because Auburn wasn't.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_00]: the right fit for him in so many ways.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think Texas, with arch manning, with talent, other players at that position, I think it's gonna free him up, and I think he's gonna be a guy who just explodes on the scene.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we know about Tony at Miami, we know about Smith at Ohio State.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_00]: They're intriguing in their own ways.
- 50:09[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not dismissing their impact, but for somebody who I'm really interested to see
- 50:15[SPEAKER_00]: how he creates his own place in the college football world.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_00]: That's the guy for me.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_01]: He's number two on my list.
- 50:24[SPEAKER_01]: I went pretty wide receiver heavy, but for all the reasons that you said, like the that could be the the catalyst for changing that offense into something really exciting and explosive, I think.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_01]: And did you see the the video that catch that he made?
- 50:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I see it.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_00]: That had been a
- 50:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Eric Academy high.
- 50:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was very similar.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: Very great.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: I came close.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_01]: You were, yeah, you were in the ballpark.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was a hell of a catch.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 50:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going with Jeremiah Smith, who I just, I think is the best player in college football.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_01]: Also in our preview magazine, I ate story on Jeremiah.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_01]: in there went kind of in depth on his last minute decision between whether he's going to stick with his Ohio State commitment or go to Miami where he was from, but I just think he is such a exceptional talent working with his third offensive coordinator in three years.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see if that hasn't effect or if their Smith is the new OC at Ohio State, but he's the guy like when I turn on the TV, I'm like just throw it to number four every play and let's see what he does.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, but you know who's going to win the highsmen and who is your men doza who's somebody who's coming out of nowhere.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_00]: I wish I could come up with something a little bit against the grain, but my final two are CJ car from Notre Dame and in archmaning.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm going to go with CJ car right now.
- 52:06[SPEAKER_00]: But it's almost a coin flip to me.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_00]: I could see you to one of them winning it, but if you're making me pick, I'll go with CJ Carr.
- 52:14[SPEAKER_00]: And then the Mendoza pick is Sam Levitt for me.
- 52:19[SPEAKER_00]: Just because of what that offense is capable of doing.
- 52:23[SPEAKER_00]: And if they do what you predicted, they could possibly do as a flyer pick.
- 52:28[SPEAKER_00]: then there's gonna be a lot of momentum for somebody like him.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, good picks.
- 52:33[SPEAKER_01]: I've got CJ Carr too for the Heisman.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think like if our Chesa great year, a lot of the credits gonna go to the Cam Colman's and the Hollywood Smothers and people like that, they brought in CJ Carr's the undoubted star of the Notre Dame offense, especially as they were placing two superstar running backs.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Carr's gonna have a great season.
- 52:53[SPEAKER_01]: He's really, really good.
- 52:54[SPEAKER_01]: Best quarterback they've had there since I don't know when.
- 52:58[SPEAKER_01]: No offense to Brady Quinn, but I think probably better than Brady Quinn.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_00]: God, that's a good question though.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, you may go back.
- 53:05[SPEAKER_01]: Like Tony Rice was a great quarterback, but he wasn't a thrower, right?
- 53:08[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no, no, no offense.
- 53:11[SPEAKER_01]: You could be talking Steve Burlin, you could be talking Joe Montana.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, do you go all the way back to Montana?
- 53:19[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe?
- 53:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, interesting.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_01]: Or we go back to, you know, when you were covering him in his Angela Bertelli.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'll answer all questions from HR.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_00]: Our public statement is, Pat 40 is, Left Sports Illustrated pursue other interest in the private sector.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_00]: We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_01]: You see, male has been disconnected.
- 53:53[SPEAKER_01]: The activated.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_01]: My men doze, this is, I just said this for fun, but my men doze is Mendoza.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_01]: Alberto Mendoza, who's now the starting quarterback in Georgia Tech, transferred from Indiana.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he's going to have a Fernando year, but I've heard some good early buzz on him with the yellow jacket.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_01]: So why didn't he stay with you?
- 54:16[SPEAKER_01]: Why didn't he stay at all you because he wasn't going to get the job right in Josh Hoover over him so that Signetti, you know, for whatever reason he whatever he's seen out of Alberto, he didn't think that he was going to be a superstar cute me.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Jean, we've always got a talk hot seat, but this is a topic that Jean is hot seat averse, I would say.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_01]: Doesn't like firing coaches, especially in August, haven't even had Jean's to play.
- 54:47[SPEAKER_01]: I never have a problem firing coaches.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm happy to do it, Gene, I'm going to give you my five guys on the hottest seats and you as Captain Optimist.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_01]: Tell me which one I'm wrong about is going to survive and have a great season.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: In order, I've got hook fickle it Wisconsin.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_01]: Mike Norvelle at Florida State, Mike Locksley at Maryland, Dave Miranda at Baylor and Lincoln Riley at USC.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get to the hoodie eventually, probably next week since they play in the open.
- 55:24[SPEAKER_01]: But for now, those are my five hottest seats.
- 55:26[SPEAKER_01]: What do you got?
- 55:27[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have D on on this list.
- 55:29[SPEAKER_00]: No, I think it was interesting.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_00]: But that's for another podcast.
- 55:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think Thickle's, well, I'm going to qualify this.
- 55:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if they're necessarily going to have like fantastic seasons and coach the year kind of seasons, but I think they'll do enough to keep their jobs.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think Thickle survives.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_00]: I think Loctsley survives.
- 55:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think Lincoln Riley survives.
- 55:56[SPEAKER_00]: I think they'll be improved.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I actually think Miranda survives.
- 56:05[SPEAKER_00]: is is Norvel at FSU and I'm going a little bit against my don't look at the schedule and make huge judgments but it's hard not to look at their schedule and say tell me where the wins are I mean that's some you at Bama Virginia at Louisville at Miami play Clampson at pit Florida they got a tough schedule.
- 56:32[SPEAKER_00]: And so I just don't see the improvement enough for Norvall to say, I'm good.
- 56:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be there another year.
- 56:44[SPEAKER_01]: I hear you.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_01]: Like I said, tough schedule, no momentum whatsoever.
- 56:48[SPEAKER_01]: Another staff turnover coordinator, another big ordled clown.
- 56:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, don't love the quarterback situation.
- 56:58[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think?
- 56:59[SPEAKER_01]: I will see if you can pull it out.
- 57:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think fickles up against it and I really like fickle and I'm shocked it hadn't worked out.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think the guy on my list out of my top five that is in the best position is Lincoln Riley.
- 57:12[SPEAKER_01]: But they also like eight and four I'm going to be good enough.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_01]: You got to go nine and three, ten and two, I think, and really compete for a big ten title and where I play off spot.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: I was out there last week.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_01]: They've got talent for sure.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_01]: They've got a lot of flares.
- 57:32[SPEAKER_01]: They're new facilities, the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.
- 57:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's amazing.
- 57:36[SPEAKER_01]: But that's all of that means the expectations are ratcheted up to let's go.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_01]: Lincoln, we hired you five years ago.
- 57:44[SPEAKER_01]: Let's now produce.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_01]: But I think he has the best chance out of that group to do so.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_00]: Fair point.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_01]: All right, you know, a couple of a couple of other general topics and then we'll get down to making a championship pick.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_01]: What game would you pay the most to attend this season?
- 58:01[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you got LSU at Ole Miss, Georgia Bama, Ohio State at your beloved IU.
- 58:10[SPEAKER_00]: Miami Notre Dame, Oregon at Ohio State.
- 58:14[SPEAKER_00]: And of course, I'm always a
- 58:16[SPEAKER_00]: I love the Army Navy game, but if I had to pick one November 7th, Miami and Notre Dame.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_00]: I would I would pay big money for that one.
- 58:27[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, I love a Saturday on that campus.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_00]: A football Saturday there and I love it stadium.
- 58:34[SPEAKER_00]: I just love the vibe.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_00]: And then just based on what happened last year and what's at stake this year.
- 58:45[SPEAKER_00]: you know, above everybody else.
- 58:49[SPEAKER_01]: Once again, we agree.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_01]: We are on the same page on that one.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_01]: That to me, yes, an autumn Saturday and South Bend is the best, right?
- 58:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, just when we're going to get some maybe it's cold or at least crisp leaves turned.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a big game and here comes Miami.
- 59:07[SPEAKER_01]: Were you there in 88 Catholics versus convicts game?
- 59:09[SPEAKER_00]: I was.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so was I. I was as good as college football gets and phenomenal game and that campus was on fire.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: So good.
- 59:20[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know what else happened to me?
- 59:21[SPEAKER_00]: I was there for, I mean, it's to it's an incredible place.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_01]: Do you know what else happened in sports that day?
- 59:28[SPEAKER_01]: trivia question.
- 59:31[SPEAKER_01]: What was the date?
- 59:33[SPEAKER_01]: October 15, 1988.
- 59:39[SPEAKER_01]: I do not know so I cover that game first game I've ever covered in Notre Dame.
- 59:44[SPEAKER_01]: I'm 24 like I can't believe I'm even there.
- 59:47[SPEAKER_01]: I walk out.
- 59:48[SPEAKER_01]: I go to where I'm staying.
- 59:49[SPEAKER_01]: I turn on the TV.
- 59:50[SPEAKER_01]: I sit down and Kurt Gibson hits a home run and limps around the basis to win a game in the world series.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_01]: Same day.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty good day in sports.
- 1:00:00[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's see here.
- 1:00:05[SPEAKER_01]: What are we, okay, all right, so we're both want to go to the same way.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_00]: I got it, you know what?
- 1:00:09[SPEAKER_00]: I got to take something back then, okay?
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_00]: All right, I was at that world series game.
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_01]: What?
- 1:00:16[SPEAKER_00]: I was at that game, really.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_00]: I was, I absolutely was.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_00]: I was like in the upper deck left corner, worst seats ever,
- 1:00:28[SPEAKER_00]: And I was at that game.
- 1:00:30[SPEAKER_00]: So I did not cover, yeah.
- 1:00:32[SPEAKER_00]: That's a booklog game.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god.
- 1:00:36[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_01]: So you were there as a paying customer?
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_00]: I was there as a paying customer.
- 1:00:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:00:41[SPEAKER_00]: Were you working at the LA Times then?
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_00]: I, I must have been.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't even know how, how the hell I got a ticket.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_00]: But I was there.
- 1:00:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, I promise you it's the same day, everybody can look it up, but I will never forget that.
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_01]: I literally walked in and said, man, I can't believe what a great day this was.
- 1:01:04[SPEAKER_01]: I got to cover Notre Dame 31 Miami 30.
- 1:01:06[SPEAKER_01]: What could possibly be better?
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I turned on the TV, and Kurt Gibson does that.
- 1:01:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think I covered that game anyway, yes.
- 1:01:14[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna find the photos and I'm showing up to the camera.
- 1:01:17[SPEAKER_00]: Next week.
- 1:01:18[SPEAKER_00]: Just do it.
- 1:01:19[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:01:20[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, that's a hell of a day.
- 1:01:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, not bad.
- 1:01:24[SPEAKER_01]: All right, three tradition questions.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_01]: What tradition?
- 1:01:28[SPEAKER_01]: All right, three, yeah, kind of three fabric of college football things here.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_01]: What tradition gives you that a college football is back feeling when you see it for the first time, each year.
- 1:01:44[SPEAKER_00]: Well, look, I'm here in Knoxville right now and, you know, I make no apologies.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a proud Tennessee alum.
- 1:01:54[SPEAKER_00]: And when that team runs through the poverty, through the checkerboard, and you hear rocky top, you know, that's the on switch for me each season.
- 1:02:03[SPEAKER_00]: There are a lot of great traditions, a lot of openings, but, you know, from a personal standpoint, that's mine.
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 1:02:12[SPEAKER_01]: And it is awesome.
- 1:02:13[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and I really, it starts for me.
- 1:02:15[SPEAKER_01]: You see the volume maybe for the first time.
- 1:02:17[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like, oh, yeah, it's on.
- 1:02:18[SPEAKER_01]: And then the team runs through the tea.
- 1:02:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's as good as it gets anywhere.
- 1:02:23[SPEAKER_01]: For me, this might be, uh, owing to my background, but as a Colorado native, when Ralphie runs through the field the first time, I just love that.
- 1:02:31[SPEAKER_01]: That is,
- 1:02:32[SPEAKER_01]: it's so college football like it's talking to somebody else if if you brought somebody over from Europe like for the world cup, you know, we had all these people walking around experiencing America, you say, hey, I'm going to take you to this college football game and a giant wild animal is going to run around the field and people are going to lose their mind is with excitement.
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_01]: and then they're going to play football.
- 1:02:56[SPEAKER_01]: That's like this explains the little lunacy of the sport and just the kind of the sensory overload of it.
- 1:03:02[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, as soon as you're somebody from like Belgium, you're like, how many people has the beast killed?
- 1:03:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, tremendous.
- 1:03:16[SPEAKER_01]: Frank, that Freddy guy from Germany is out.
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_01]: You've been touring all over America during the World Cup.
- 1:03:22[SPEAKER_01]: I hope he gets to go see Ralphie.
- 1:03:24[SPEAKER_01]: All right, what uniform?
- 1:03:25[SPEAKER_01]: When the first time you see it, you're like, yeah, we're back.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_00]: Ohio State, I mean, I love the old school unis.
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_00]: I love Michigan, Bama, Ohio State, you know, I always throw Tennessee in there, but if I had to pick one Ohio State, even when it's a clean helmet, when it haven't even put the geek cows on yet, just the uniform, it's perfection to me.
- 1:03:50[SPEAKER_00]: love it.
- 1:03:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's great.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_01]: I love UCLA's uniform.
- 1:03:55[SPEAKER_01]: I rarely love the product that's in it, but that uniform to me is the best uniform to be honest.
- 1:04:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's good.
- 1:04:00[SPEAKER_00]: You're right.
- 1:04:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:04:01[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:04:02[SPEAKER_01]: And last, what fight song when you hear it, you're like, oh, okay.
- 1:04:06[SPEAKER_01]: Football is here.
- 1:04:13[SPEAKER_00]: What is the victors?
- 1:04:15[SPEAKER_00]: Is that Michigan's?
- 1:04:20[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I mean, they're, they're, they're the soundtrack of our Saturdays.
- 1:04:24[SPEAKER_00]: Those songs or can you name Hawaii's fight song?
- 1:04:28[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_00]: But look it up real quick, but after you pick yours, you'll love the name of it, all right?
- 1:04:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I September 12th will be a big day for you because we get to hear both fight songs because Oklahoma is that Michigan you get to your boomer sooner and Hail to the victors go off yours.
- 1:04:49[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah for me, it's it's hail of the victors that That gets my blood going every single time the lyrics to boomer sooner remarkable by the way, you know what they are
- 1:05:01[SPEAKER_01]: Listen, just boomersooner, boomersooner, boomersooner, boomersooner, boomersooner, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, that's it.
- 1:05:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's like three words.
- 1:05:13[SPEAKER_00]: On reading.
- 1:05:14[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess we'll look a little bit more great, but I said the music is good.
- 1:05:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, the music is very catchy.
- 1:05:22[SPEAKER_01]: I am attempting to look up the Hawaii fight song here.
- 1:05:25[SPEAKER_00]: Real quick, my computer is, is, well, in the interest of time, I'll tell you
- 1:05:34[SPEAKER_00]: I have no idea what their name is, but it's, it's a bizarre name for a hard song.
- 1:05:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's what it, what it, I don't, like, what do they talk about?
- 1:05:44[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, okay, details.
- 1:05:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it looks like it's pretty standard lyrics.
- 1:05:53[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty standard lyrics.
- 1:05:54[SPEAKER_01]: All right, here's to old warriors calling.
- 1:05:56[SPEAKER_01]: Here's to old battles one.
- 1:05:57[SPEAKER_01]: Here's to wise victory.
- 1:05:59[SPEAKER_01]: Here's to each valiant one.
- 1:06:02[SPEAKER_01]: Funny, my nephew just enrolled there as a graduate student in mathematics, which tells me he's very smart to be going to Hawaii for grad school.
- 1:06:09[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:06:10[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:06:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, last thing before we get to the last thing.
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_01]: National championship pick.
- 1:06:16[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you got... Well, I was absolutely wrong and last year's pick.
- 1:06:20[SPEAKER_00]: Who was it?
- 1:06:22[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I think I had Texas Penn State.
- 1:06:25[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, right, right.
- 1:06:27[SPEAKER_00]: Well, what do you mean?
- 1:06:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, who do you have?
- 1:06:29[SPEAKER_00]: I had Penn State.
- 1:06:30[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, okay, and who is your other one?
- 1:06:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember.
- 1:06:34[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, well, it wasn't the team that won.
- 1:06:37[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, it was not.
- 1:06:38[SPEAKER_00]: So don't just act like I'm the only guy who got it wrong last year.
- 1:06:42[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody got it wrong literally.
- 1:06:44[SPEAKER_01]: Literally.
- 1:06:45[SPEAKER_00]: I have Notre Dame playing Texas.
- 1:06:47[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:06:49[SPEAKER_00]: I have Notre Dame winning.
- 1:06:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think Notre Dame, you want to talk about a team that didn't get respect in that AP preseason poll, you know, for what it's worth, I was really surprised at how low relatively speaking Notre Dame was.
- 1:07:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I agree with you.
- 1:07:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm picking Notre Dame as well, who they play, somebody from the big 10 is what I who they will play, I think, and whether that's Indiana, Ohio State or Oregon, but I'm it's Notre Dame's time.
- 1:07:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the pieces are in place.
- 1:07:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think they will end up having the best defense in the country as long as Chris Ash doesn't mess it up.
- 1:07:29[SPEAKER_01]: Coordinator, he was fine last year, but they weren't ready early.
- 1:07:33[SPEAKER_01]: They were undressed against Texas A&M.
- 1:07:35[SPEAKER_01]: So a little bit of proving still to do there.
- 1:07:38[SPEAKER_01]: But personnel, ridiculous, quarterback, excellent.
- 1:07:42[SPEAKER_01]: Line, good, receivers, improved.
- 1:07:46[SPEAKER_01]: need some running backs, but I like, uh, I like everything they're, they're putting together a lot so I'm taking the axe there as well, which means they are doomed and will, will lose early.
- 1:07:56[SPEAKER_00]: The path, you, uh, I'm sorry.
- 1:07:58[SPEAKER_00]: I just can't let you off on, uh, uh, and a team from the big town.
- 1:08:03[SPEAKER_00]: No, you got to pick a team from the big town.
- 1:08:05[SPEAKER_00]: Indiana, I picked Indiana to win the big town.
- 1:08:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sticking with them.
- 1:08:09[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:08:09[SPEAKER_00]: No, oh, so the Notre Dame and Indiana do play.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_01]: they too.
- 1:08:14[SPEAKER_01]: There we go.
- 1:08:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that may be off the regular season schedule when it's supposed to be played in 2030, but bring it on in Las Vegas of all places for the championship.
- 1:08:25[SPEAKER_01]: That will be so weird.
- 1:08:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:08:28[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Gina, last point here.
- 1:08:32[SPEAKER_01]: Don't know whether you heard Eric Morris, the new coach at Oklahoma State.
- 1:08:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:08:40[SPEAKER_01]: So having he doesn't sleep well.
- 1:08:42[SPEAKER_01]: So gets up in the middle of the night, apparently.
- 1:08:44[SPEAKER_01]: You know, this is a few days ago.
- 1:08:46[SPEAKER_01]: Got up at like 2.30 a.m.
- 1:08:49[SPEAKER_01]: Here's something rustling around in the backyard.
- 1:08:51[SPEAKER_01]: Apparently they've been having a problem with a critter out there.
- 1:08:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's an armadillo digging up the yard, digging up the garden.
- 1:09:00[SPEAKER_01]: Eric Morris grabs a firearm and caps the beast.
- 1:09:04[SPEAKER_01]: Kills the beast right out there in the backyard.
- 1:09:07[SPEAKER_01]: takes care of following the Mike Gundry tradition, like Gundys to go shoot rattlesnakes, if you remember.
- 1:09:13[SPEAKER_01]: So keeping the pistols firing Oklahoma State tradition alive, first of all, Mike, this is a two-to-park question, sorry for that.
- 1:09:23[SPEAKER_01]: But have you ever killed an A shot an animal in your backyard?
- 1:09:27[SPEAKER_01]: And two, what other coach out there do you think is packing heat waiting to kill something in his backyard?
- 1:09:35[SPEAKER_00]: Well, first of all, my wife or a cultureist, we have the fantastic garden and stuff.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_00]: And we've had a little bunnies eating some of the vegetables and a red-coon might sneak back there or squirrel.
- 1:09:52[SPEAKER_00]: We don't run out there with a shotgun and kill them all.
- 1:09:57[SPEAKER_00]: You know, God's creatures.
- 1:10:04[SPEAKER_00]: not another coach.
- 1:10:07[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it, it have to be in Texas or something like that, right?
- 1:10:12[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:10:13[SPEAKER_00]: I can't even, I can't even get.
- 1:10:16[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you know what?
- 1:10:17[SPEAKER_00]: You know who might be a
- 1:10:30[SPEAKER_01]: What, what, I'm trying to like in with an Illinois, that would be like a possum or something, I guess.
- 1:10:35[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, it certainly wouldn't be an armadillo.
- 1:10:38[SPEAKER_00]: No, got reccoons.
- 1:10:40[SPEAKER_00]: No, I'm not.
- 1:10:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm sure.
- 1:10:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:44[SPEAKER_01]: Um, here's what I hear me playing, by the way, but here's the scenario I could foresee.
- 1:10:50[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:10:52[SPEAKER_01]: Mario Crystal ball goes out and like wrestles an alligator.
- 1:10:55[SPEAKER_01]: He finds an alligator in his yard and just says, I'm taking care of this.
- 1:10:58[SPEAKER_01]: Now with a gun with my hands,
- 1:11:00[SPEAKER_01]: And just right battles an alligator to the death pancake blocks it.
- 1:11:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:11:06[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 1:11:07[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe like, you know, masking tapes that's my electrical tapes, it's mouth shut and turns it back in a canala or something.
- 1:11:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:11:13[SPEAKER_01]: You would be the kind of guy that I think would relish the chance to have him hand-to-hand combat with a large danger of sandable.
- 1:11:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:11:22[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 1:11:23[SPEAKER_01]: Clearly, that's enough of this show.
- 1:11:26[SPEAKER_01]: We went a little long, but we're excited to have Gene back, a lot of preview stuff to cover.
- 1:11:31[SPEAKER_01]: We'll be back again next Thursday to talk about Week Zero, and we'll start making bad picks.
- 1:11:37[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for watching and listening.
- 1:11:39[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk you later.
