- 0:00What's up, everybody? Charlie Marlowe here once again
- 0:03in my Tony Larussa transition lenses, talking some Cardinals
- 0:07baseball. It's been a while.
- 0:09I got a topic that, well, maybe you like the topic.
- 0:12I don't think you're going to like my take because look, Ali
- 0:16Mar Mole has grown on me a bit. He's growing on me.
- 0:21You guys probably don't like hearing that.
- 0:24OK, but here's why. First of all, I thought about
- 0:27this last week. I was on vacation, I was in
- 0:30Ohio, didn't do any videos. But what really struck me, I
- 0:34really enjoyed Ali appearing on the BK and Ferrario show on one
- 0:40O 1ESPN. I didn't listen to the entire
- 0:43interview, but I saw a ton of the clips on social media.
- 0:47And the one that I really, really liked was he was asked,
- 0:52basically, do you think any of the criticism you get from fans,
- 0:56is that fair? Is any of it fair?
- 0:59And you react to it and think, yeah, I could have done things
- 1:02differently. And he said right out of the
- 1:04gate, he said, basically, I'm paraphrasing, but that he
- 1:08regretted. He called it the TO situation,
- 1:11Tyler O'Neill, the way he handled the Tyler O'Neill
- 1:14situation. This is going back to, what,
- 1:162023? And he said, you know, doing it
- 1:19publicly, he would have done it differently, so on and so forth.
- 1:24I really liked that. I really like when people can
- 1:28admit they're wrong or admit their mistakes and just say
- 1:32that. It's so hard for so many people
- 1:35to do that these days in sports, in politics, everywhere, to just
- 1:39admit you were wrong. And look, I've always been
- 1:43pretty neutral on Ollie. I was never a Ollie fanboy.
- 1:48I was never, I was never necessarily an Ollie hater.
- 1:51I think I was pretty fair. My my big issues with Ollie.
- 1:55Here are my big issues with Ollie.
- 1:57I thought he did not do a great job in game one of the playoffs,
- 2:022022 versus the Philadelphia Phillies, right?
- 2:04We can talk about Quintana, we can talk about Ryan Helsley
- 2:08usage and and we don't have to go back.
- 2:10I'm just saying, look, that was his first playoff game.
- 2:13I get it. I don't think he put his team in
- 2:15the best position to win. I think he'd even admit that now
- 2:19with with not having somebody up once Helsley was struggling.
- 2:22Did he pull Quintana too early? Again, we're going back three
- 2:26years, but that was one of my big issues.
- 2:28But again, it was his first playoff game.
- 2:30So I'm not even trying to be a hater, but that's fair.
- 2:32This is the big leagues. It was the playoffs.
- 2:34I don't think he put the Cardinals in the best position
- 2:36to win. My my then two issues.
- 2:40The two biggest was were, you know, 2023 when the Cardinals
- 2:45just fell off the planet and just became a terrible baseball
- 2:49team. He was the man in charge.
- 2:51And I always say, look, baseball managers, it's like an NFL
- 2:54quarterback or head coach. You always get too much of the
- 2:56credit, too much of the blame. Obviously, credit things going
- 3:00well, blame things going poorly. Look man, like through all the
- 3:04TLR years, the Metheny years, the Shield years, the Cardinals
- 3:09never took a crap like they did in 2023.
- 3:11So, and, and I've said all along organizationally mosaic De
- 3:17Witt's development, that's the bigger problem.
- 3:20But still, you can't take Ollie off the hook for 20/23.
- 3:24He was the manager for that year.
- 3:26The Cardinals fell off the frickin planet.
- 3:28They were terrible. He deserves some blame for that
- 3:31as well. He is the manager of the team.
- 3:33But then also get back to the Tyler O'Neill situation.
- 3:36And I said this publicly on the radio when it happened.
- 3:39I thought it made no strategic sense whatsoever to handle that
- 3:43publicly. I have no issue whatsoever with
- 3:46calling out Tyler O'Neill privately or even doing it in a
- 3:50in a professional way publicly. He threw him under the bus.
- 3:53I didn't hear any athlete, any former player that thought that
- 3:58was a good idea to do that. The only people defending Ollie,
- 4:01let's be honest, were rights holders in that situation, and
- 4:04I'm talking nationally. I never heard one person say
- 4:08Ollie handled that well. So that's why when I say Ollie
- 4:11is growing on me, the fact that last week he admitted he made a
- 4:15mistake there, he would have handled that differently.
- 4:18I think that shows a lot of maturity and a lot of growth,
- 4:22and I think that's really, really good.
- 4:24So there you go. I I just pointed out the things
- 4:26where I think it's fair to criticize Ollie.
- 4:28But also, look, you know, 2022, the team was good.
- 4:32He's a good manager. They fell off the face of the
- 4:34earth 2023-2024 and here in 2025, you know, OK.
- 4:40And I understand like, this isn't going to be popular
- 4:42because the Cardinals just lost a series to the worst team in
- 4:44baseball, the Colorado Rockies. But they also just won series
- 4:47against the Dodgers and the Cubs.
- 4:49You know, they're right at 500. I don't think anybody thought
- 4:51this team was going to be good this year.
- 4:52So I actually think Ollie's done a pretty good job this year.
- 4:55You can make an argument. You can make the argument this
- 4:57could be his best managing job because the team's not very
- 5:00good, right? 2022 was a good team.
- 5:03Do you think Ali Mara Mole wanted to roll out Eric Fetty
- 5:06and Miles Michaelis for 40% of the starts this year?
- 5:09Hell no. And I think we've all realized
- 5:11by now, and I'm not saying Ollie's the greatest manager in
- 5:14baseball. I'm still relatively neutral on
- 5:17him, but the bigger problems mosaic De Witt's development.
- 5:21Ollie's just out there managing the players that he can manage.
- 5:25And I don't think this is a very good team at all.
- 5:28Pitching staff, not great. Who's the superstar?
- 5:30I mean, there's no superstar on this team.
- 5:33So I think you can make the argument that Ollie's actually
- 5:36maybe done his best job managing with this team because this team
- 5:40is not very good. So what do you guys think?
- 5:42What do you think of those takes right there?
- 5:44And by the way, this is also not saying I'm not saying Ollie
- 5:47should necessarily even be back next year, although I think it
- 5:50would be fine if he was. I'm not into this.
- 5:53Oh, you have to have a new contract?
- 5:55You can't be a lame duck manager.
- 5:56I think that's really stupid. But also, look, if Heim Bloom
- 6:00likes Ollie, Heim Bloom should keep Ollie.
- 6:03If Heim Bloom doesn't think Ollie's the guy to lead the
- 6:06team, lead the franchise for the next 5 years, then Heim Bloom
- 6:09should be able to pick his own guy.
- 6:11And that's totally fair, too. And look, I think Ali will get
- 6:14another chance somewhere else because I think he's done at
- 6:17least an OK job overall. But look, he was Mosaic's pick.
- 6:22He was Mosaic's guy, and Heimbloom's taking over, and
- 6:25Heimbloom should be able to pick his own manager moving forward.
- 6:29What do you guys think about that?
- 6:30Is it fair? Am I crazy?
- 6:32Hey, please hook up our sponsors.
- 6:34By the way, Triad Bank, best thing I ever did for my rental
- 6:37property business, taking all my commercial loans from a big
- 6:40National Bank that didn't care about me to Triad Bank
- 6:44relationship based banking. They're fantastic.
- 6:47I go to the Frontenac location. Just got a new loan with them
- 6:49about two months ago. It was so easy.
- 6:52I called my guy Matthew Tobin on Memorial Day weekend and he
- 6:55answered and he answered my texts and he got it all.
- 6:58He got it all done for me. And then also, of course, Saint
- 7:01Louis lawn care, Saint Louis equipment, it's tough these days
- 7:04with the sun, but weed control right this time of year, Saint
- 7:08Louis lawn care for your mowing, for your mulch.
- 7:10If you want to freshen up your mulch, mosquito and bug control,
- 7:14Saint Louis equipment, get a new mower, get your mower repaired,
- 7:17all your small engine stuff, right?
- 7:19I've gotten a Crest battery operated trimmer.
- 7:22That's a beast. Used that yesterday.
- 7:24I got a Husqvarna blower. That's the fuel mix.
- 7:27That's a beast as well. Got a ton of stuff, got all my
- 7:30landscaping from Saint Louis Lawn Care, Saint Louis equipment
- 7:34as well. This year, my guy Tim Jenkerson,
- 7:36got some Arbor Vita back here, got what?
- 7:39A big juniper. Got a bunch of boxwoods that had
- 7:41died off and they trimmed them and did it.
- 7:43They did it all. So Saint Louis Equipment, Saint
- 7:45Louis Lawn Care, and of course, my guy Matthew Tobin, Triad
- 7:49Bank, please support all of my great sponsors right there.
- 7:53And I thought of one more thing as I was about to wrap it up.
- 7:56I think Ollie Marmol shows very well on these long form
- 8:00interviews when he's with BK and Ferrario, when he's talking with
- 8:04Bernie, he shows well in the long form podcast form.
- 8:09And I think Cardinal fans can see a different side of him than
- 8:12when he's doing the five to 8 minute post game press
- 8:15conference when often times he's pissed because the team lost.
- 8:19And maybe he's a little short, little snippy.
- 8:22And I get it, TLR was like that too.
- 8:23But I think Ollie's very smart. I almost forgot to say this.
- 8:27This was on my mind. Ollie's very smart to do these
- 8:30long form interviews. That's where he talked about
- 8:32Tyler O'Neill. He talks with Bernie.
- 8:34He shows very well. And I think it's good PR to keep
- 8:37doing those because I think fans will warm up to him a little bit
- 8:41and already have. So Ollie, that's smart of you to
- 8:44do. All right, peace out.
