SPEAKER_02: How cute are these little tacitas from bongos?
• 1:54
  SPEAKER_04: Those are very cute.
• 1:55
SPEAKER_04: You're lucky you're not in Colorado because I would be stealing those from your head.
• 1:58
SPEAKER_05: I still have I still have a coffee cup.
• 2:00
SPEAKER_05: My grandma got me whenever it first opened.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_05: Her and my grandpa they went there in '97, right after it first opened.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_05: So I still have my Bongos coffee cup that she has.
• 2:10
SPEAKER_05: It looks very similar to that.
• 2:12
SPEAKER_02: But it's just my aunt.
• 2:13
SPEAKER_02: My aunt was in a thrift store and she saw them.
• 2:17
SPEAKER_02: This was uh out in Miami.
• 2:19
SPEAKER_02: She saw them, she she bought them, they were like a dollar each or something like that, something ridiculous.
• 2:25
SPEAKER_02: And um, she went to ship them to me over here, and it was gonna cost her like sixty-five dollars just to ship it.
• 2:31
  SPEAKER_02: Wow.
• 2:32
SPEAKER_02: So instead of spending instead of spending the money in on shipping, she just booked the flight and came out here.
• 2:37
SPEAKER_02: So she's here with me now.
• 2:40
  SPEAKER_02: She personally brought that.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you could probably do that for$65 and some of the like breeze or um frontier.
• 2:48
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, right.
• 2:49
  SPEAKER_05: Frontier is Colorado.
• 2:51
SPEAKER_02: So I once again, we're we're all excited to to have Teddy.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_02: We're let's see what stories he has to share.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_02: But um, Rob, are you ready to cue some music?
• 3:01
  SPEAKER_02: Let the music play.
• 3:06
SPEAKER_02: Our guest today has been part of the Miami Sound Machine and Estefan musical family for four decades.
• 3:12
SPEAKER_02: As a multi-instrumentalist, Teddy Mullette has contributed his talents to albums including Let It Loose, Cuts Both Ways, Into the Light, and Mi Guerra, while building an incredible career beyond the Estefan world.
• 3:25
SPEAKER_02: And from everything we've heard, Teddy has also been someone who has brought plenty of humor and fun to the group along the way.
• 3:33
SPEAKER_02: And we're hoping to hear a few of those stories today.
• 3:36
SPEAKER_02: Teddy Mullette, welcome to Let It Loose.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_02: Well, thank you for having me.
• 3:41
  SPEAKER_05: Thank you, it's a real pleasure.
• 3:43
  SPEAKER_05: Thank you so much.
• 3:44
SPEAKER_05: Thank you so much for being here.
• 3:45
  SPEAKER_05: This is awesome.
• 3:46
  SPEAKER_02: We are so excited.
• 3:47
SPEAKER_02: We um, you know, it's it's funny because we're we're recording all out of order, so but we've already had uh uh with us.
• 3:56
SPEAKER_02: I don't even know if we should share that.
• 3:58
SPEAKER_02: We might have to edit that part out.
• 4:00
SPEAKER_04: We can I can bleep it.
• 4:02
SPEAKER_04: We've already had bleep on the show.
• 4:04
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we might have to, yeah.
• 4:06
  SPEAKER_06: Surprise.
• 4:07
  SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah.
• 4:07
SPEAKER_06: Well uh some profanity must have escaped there.
• 4:09
SPEAKER_06: Uh and obviously uh yeah, I can sleep or something.
• 4:12
SPEAKER_05: I can have a potty mouth sometimes, so they edit me.
• 4:15
SPEAKER_06: You know, I mean, I don't particularly go that way unless I'm amongst musicians, because the musicians, you know, we're all irreverent when it comes to that, I think.
• 4:24
SPEAKER_02: Some of us, you know, but uh in an interview like this, I don't think it's you know, call for we we we check off the explicit content just in case.
• 4:35
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you you you never know.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_02: Whatever comes out is okay.
• 4:39
  SPEAKER_02: It's funny.
• 4:40
SPEAKER_02: We had we had Becky here, uh Gloria's sister, and she was on the uh the podcast, and and she's uh she slipped an F bomb there.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_02: Yes, and she was like, oops.
• 4:51
SPEAKER_02: I'm like, nope, no, keep it, keep it.
• 4:53
  SPEAKER_02: We're good, it's all good.
• 4:55
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, but she's she's um she's sort of royalty.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_06: You know, it's like if you were in a interviewing uh King Charles, and then all of a sudden, well, was well not Andrew and Al, but uh the other one, the um the other brother.
• 5:08
  SPEAKER_04: That's right, yeah.
• 5:09
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we have quite a few questions uh for you.
• 5:13
SPEAKER_02: We've been fans for for so long, you know.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_02: When we we mentioned this to previous musicians that have been on the show, you know, when we think of our childhood, especially, you know, it's not just Gloria, you know, we're fans of of Gloria, her music, but it's Miami Sound Machine as well.
• 5:31
SPEAKER_05: You know, you yeah, for sure.
• 5:32
SPEAKER_02: We we grew up seeing John DeFaria in uh in our music videos and um Clay Oswald and George, and as well as you.
• 5:42
SPEAKER_02: So for you to take the time to sit in with you know a bunch of of Miami Sound Machine nerds here that uh have been following you guys for forever, it means the world to us.
• 5:54
SPEAKER_06: Are are you guys having a good diet or taking medicine or something?
• 5:58
SPEAKER_06: Because this is really extraordinary.
• 6:03
SPEAKER_02: No, I guess uh you know is for you guys because you guys look like I mean, you guys don't age.
• 6:11
  SPEAKER_02: No, it's true.
• 6:12
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 6:12
SPEAKER_06: I I still I'm not saying this to pat my back or anything, but I I my voice really hasn't changed since since my 20s.
• 6:21
SPEAKER_06: I don't sound like it's all about winners impression of uh but uh you know, yeah, I've that obviously, you know, 40 years to me they they have seemed to go by so fast, yeah.
• 6:41
SPEAKER_06: Slow and fast at the same time.
• 6:43
SPEAKER_06: You know, it's uh it's really weird to describe.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_06: You know, I sometimes I wake up in the morning and I'm looking at myself in the mirror.
• 6:50
  SPEAKER_06: How did this happen?
• 6:52
  SPEAKER_06: What happened to me?
• 6:53
SPEAKER_06: I mean, it's like uh I'm struggling to go to the bathroom to go put one foot in front of the other.
• 6:59
SPEAKER_06: This is this is nuts.
• 7:01
SPEAKER_06: And the older you get, the faster it goes.
• 7:03
SPEAKER_06: You know, you still gotta keep moving, you know, still gotta keep going.
• 7:06
SPEAKER_06: And uh it's really it's really uh for me, it's really uh motivating uh to be talking to to you guys and and what you're doing because it's it's like uh it's meaningful in a way that you that I hadn't, for example, I really hadn't realized before.
• 7:25
SPEAKER_06: You know, over the years I've seen you know a lot of the fans and club clubs, uh fan clubs of glory and stuff.
• 7:33
SPEAKER_06: And yeah, I glanced a little bit, well, never really paid attention because I was busy, you know, super busy, and I'm still sometimes I get pretty busy, but now that I'm I'm I'm going like, wow, this is a stage of my life that I'm uh I'm an old guy.
• 7:48
SPEAKER_06: And there are still people that are, you know, want to meet me and uh want to have a conversation with me.
• 7:54
SPEAKER_06: And that makes me feel you know important in a way, that like you know, that I that I matter somewhere in this in this world, that I'm not just some uh little ant in the trillions of ants in the in the world, you know.
• 8:07
SPEAKER_02: And not only I mean, not only is it the fact that you matter, but that I mean, what you've done is so meaningful, right?
• 8:16
SPEAKER_02: You you've been you're part of that legacy, you know.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_02: It's not just Gloria, it's not just Emilio, you're part of of a legacy, and and to see you still killing it, because you're killing it.
• 8:26
SPEAKER_02: You know, uh we've we've been to all the recent concerts, and you know, um uh we've we've been to Madrid and we were West was in Chile, he'll mention that 20 times during the episode, by the way.
• 8:39
SPEAKER_05: Well, I'm the one I'm the I'm the unlucky one.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_05: You know, I was little when this all I became a fan, probably like 10 years old, you know, right in the seven, eight years old.
• 8:50
SPEAKER_05: Um, and I haven't been to as many concerts.
• 8:53
SPEAKER_05: Um two, three, yeah, three.
• 8:56
SPEAKER_05: Chile was the third one.
• 8:57
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 8:58
SPEAKER_05: So Wes is used to the home video.
• 9:00
SPEAKER_05: I have not been around the whole the whole fan club group very much.
• 9:04
SPEAKER_05: I'm getting into it in my 40s.
• 9:06
SPEAKER_02: So Wes is Wes is used to just seeing the the home videos.
• 9:10
SPEAKER_02: It's not until you know recently that he's been more exposed to to the concerts.
• 9:14
SPEAKER_02: But what's amazing is you look at the home videos, you watch you doing what you were doing back then, and seeing you now, it's like, man, do you freaking age?
• 9:22
SPEAKER_02: Like uh this is amazing.
• 9:25
SPEAKER_02: So but that means bags under my eyes.
• 9:28
SPEAKER_02: Hey, we all do, don't worry.
• 9:31
SPEAKER_02: That's on the partying that you did last night.
• 9:33
SPEAKER_02: But um but working out I worked out with partying last night.
• 9:37
SPEAKER_02: We're gonna jump into to the early years.
• 9:39
SPEAKER_02: So let's start at the very beginning.
• 9:41
SPEAKER_02: Uh, where were you born and raised, and what was Teddy Mulette like as a kid?
• 9:46
SPEAKER_02: What did your household sound like growing up?
• 9:50
SPEAKER_02: Um, what music was around?
• 9:52
SPEAKER_02: Tell us kind of of uh a little about those beginnings.
• 9:56
SPEAKER_06: Well, um, I was born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, which is uh a big city on the on the west of the island, but my father was from a small town close to Mayagüez, which used to be a barrio or a part of Mayagüez, it's hormigueros.
• 10:11
SPEAKER_06: Okay, hormigueros has uh a beautiful cathedral that is over 500 years old.
• 10:16
SPEAKER_06: So my dad uh put my birth certificate as I was born in Ormigueros, but I wasn't anyway.
• 10:22
SPEAKER_06: Um my mom is from San Germán, which is uh also a very significant town of uh historical town of Puerto Rico, and we happen uh she happened to be uh uh great-granddaughter of uh Francisco Mariano Quiñones, who was a uh a very famous statesman in Puerto Rico, anyway.
• 10:42
SPEAKER_06: Uh my dad was a civil engineer and my mom was a teacher, and um I my mom taught me how to read when I was four, four years old.
• 10:53
SPEAKER_06: And then I started uh learning English when I was you know seven, eight.
• 10:58
SPEAKER_06: And uh my first instrument was guitar.
• 11:01
SPEAKER_06: I started playing guitar when I was seven.
• 11:03
  SPEAKER_01: Really?
• 11:04
SPEAKER_06: And then after that, um she sent me to to take some piano lessons.
• 11:10
SPEAKER_06: Um but then after a while, you know, because of the distance, you know, we we have to stop that.
• 11:15
SPEAKER_06: But um when I went to elementary band, I took the trombone.
• 11:19
SPEAKER_06: That was the only instrument that I figured, you know, I was so little.
• 11:22
SPEAKER_06: I tried all the instruments and all of them were intimidating.
• 11:25
SPEAKER_06: The saxophone had too many keys, the clarinet, you know, I you know, it was like something from from another world.
• 11:32
SPEAKER_06: So I was able to produce a perfect F on the trombone.
• 11:36
SPEAKER_06: And I stuck with that, and I never oh, I even bypassed the trumpet, which is weird because um I've been playing more trumpet than trombone in my professional career.
• 11:46
SPEAKER_06: I play both equally as well, but I started as a trombone player, and you know, the music that I was listening back then uh from the 50s, you know, whatever was playing on the radio.
• 11:57
SPEAKER_06: But I also had an aunt that uh was a uh university professor at the time, and she loved to play classical music.
• 12:06
SPEAKER_06: And uh I used to sit with her and uh she played Mozart, Beethoven, the whole thing.
• 12:11
SPEAKER_06: Uh she also played stuff, uh musicals that were that were popular at that time, you know, Broadway stuff.
• 12:18
SPEAKER_06: So, you know, I really had a good beginning musically.
• 12:21
SPEAKER_06: And then my father was a big band uh uh you know lover.
• 12:25
SPEAKER_06: He loved uh you know, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, uh all the all those bands, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, all that stuff.
• 12:33
SPEAKER_06: And that and that's what got me into it very interested in in playing uh jazz, was you know, listening to the swing bands.
• 12:42
SPEAKER_06: And um and then we also I also grew up with El Gran Combo, Cortijo, you know that the uh you know, the old guys, you know, Rafael Cortijo, uh El Gran Combo, you know, all those uh Tito Puente.
• 12:58
SPEAKER_06: Uh I never got to see Machito or any of those guys in New York because I, you know, I I missed the opportunity.
• 13:04
SPEAKER_06: I didn't really even know that those uh they existed until later in years, but I I did get a chance to play with Tito back in 2012, and that was a great experience.
• 13:14
SPEAKER_04: You know, Teddy, something that I love about interviewing all these members of Miami Sound Machine is the people you think they're gonna name while they're talking about their musical influences are never the people who are top of mind.
• 13:26
SPEAKER_04: Like you're mentioning Broadway, you're mentioning Big Band, you're mentioning jazz.
• 13:30
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 13:31
SPEAKER_04: How did all those different influences um affect you as a musician, as a as a kid, as an adolescent?
• 13:38
SPEAKER_04: How did they all like enter your musical lexicon?
• 13:43
SPEAKER_06: Well, I like the I it was something different from from the norm that I was listening.
• 13:48
SPEAKER_06: You know, when you're listening to to Salsa music in Puerto Rico at that and at that in that era, it was always pretty much the same.
• 13:55
SPEAKER_06: But when when when you listen to when you start noticing that there's a crossover of rhythms, you know, like uh Mongo Santa Maria, you know, and then you know the Afro rhythms getting into in into the jazz, and then you start listening to RB, you know, which uh it was you know difficult.
• 14:13
SPEAKER_06: I started listening to RB when I went to New York in those summer visits.
• 14:18
SPEAKER_06: Because we did in Puerto Rico, we didn't really have that much uh uh uh stuff like that going on in the radio, you know.
• 14:27
SPEAKER_06: Uh, but then um, you know, in the 60s, that's when uh the in Puerto Rico the the bands started um coming out uh with the um with a really heavy American influence, you know.
• 14:38
SPEAKER_06: Like there was a group called the Mystics, it was a trio.
• 14:42
SPEAKER_06: Uh Puerto Rican guy Roy Garcia and his and his brother Bruce uh playing the ham and organ and uh and um and a and a drummer, and they sounded like they came from uh from Mars, you know.
• 14:54
SPEAKER_06: It was like all of a sudden, here we have a Puerto Rican band playing with Alfred D.
• 14:58
SPEAKER_06: Herger in the show way back then in La Nueva Ola, the new wave.
• 15:03
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 15:05
  SPEAKER_06: And they sounded incredible.
• 15:06
SPEAKER_06: They played jazz, they played rock, stuff that I really hadn't heard, and that kind of got me hooked up.
• 15:12
SPEAKER_06: And then and then I started listening to Tijuana Brass to Herb Albert.
• 15:17
SPEAKER_06: Uh you know, another big influence was Sergio Mendes.
• 15:20
  SPEAKER_06: I love Sergio Mendes.
• 15:21
  SPEAKER_06: Oh wow, yeah.
• 15:22
  SPEAKER_06: Fifth Dimension.
• 15:24
SPEAKER_06: And then you keep going, and then in the 70s, the Brecker Brothers, Earth, Wind and Fire.
• 15:28
SPEAKER_06: You know, by then I was already, you know, in the 70s, I toured with a band uh all over the all, you know, most of the United States, a band called Standing Ovation.
• 15:39
SPEAKER_06: And uh we were just a cover band with two girls dancing up front.
• 15:42
SPEAKER_06: We we we we were doing everything from rock, you know, rock and roll to R V and stuff.
• 15:48
SPEAKER_06: And it was like a show we had a front man, and um, we were you know, usually either a week or two weeks in a place, and we moved on.
• 15:55
  unknown: Right.
• 15:55
  SPEAKER_06: Stuff like that.
• 15:56
SPEAKER_04: So your first instrument you said that you picked up was a guitar.
• 15:59
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 16:00
SPEAKER_04: But in throughout all of that, you're playing multiple things.
• 16:04
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 16:05
SPEAKER_04: What was the moment where you were like, maybe this is my maybe this is my career, this is what I'm gonna do?
• 16:10
SPEAKER_04: Or did you plan to do something else as a kid?
• 16:12
SPEAKER_06: Well, I I yeah, I did plan to do something else.
• 16:14
SPEAKER_06: I when I graduated from high school, uh, I went to Colegio de Marihagues, you know, with the same place, uh university where my dad studied, and I enrolled in uh the biology major, which is the pre-med, you know, four years of biology, and then you go to uh school of medicine, or or so I thought.
• 16:34
SPEAKER_06: I wanted to be a uh pediatrician because I liked I wanted to work with kids.
• 16:39
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 16:40
SPEAKER_06: Uh the only way for me to pay for that tuition at that time was that I I joined every single musical organization at the university.
• 16:47
SPEAKER_06: I was in the marching band, I was in the jazz band, I was in a classical band, I was a small group, and uh pretty much I got overwhelmed between studies and and the music.
• 16:59
SPEAKER_06: And I was not doing well with the studies.
• 17:01
SPEAKER_06: Uh a lot of that stuff at that time either didn't appeal to me or or I thought they were too difficult for me to uh understand.
• 17:09
SPEAKER_06: And I was really more interested in practicing.
• 17:11
SPEAKER_06: So I quit and then I went to the conservatory in Puerto Rico in Atorrey, like in 19 uh 72, I think.
• 17:20
  SPEAKER_06: 1972, 73.
• 17:22
SPEAKER_06: And um, and then I had a falling out with my trombone teacher because uh he caught me playing trumpet one time.
• 17:31
  SPEAKER_06: That's right.
• 17:32
SPEAKER_06: I had been playing trumpet since I had taken classes with him.
• 17:35
SPEAKER_06: I was on my third year of trombone, and then he he scolded me, you shouldn't be playing trumpet because it's gonna mess up with your embassure.
• 17:42
SPEAKER_06: I said, I've been playing trumpet for for three years, and now and now because you caught me, you know, you I don't I still start thinking you always you know, how come now you don't like the idea?
• 17:52
SPEAKER_06: No, because blah blah blah.
• 17:53
  SPEAKER_06: I told him, Look, I I don't think I'm caught out to be a symphony player.
• 17:57
SPEAKER_06: And that was a mistake because I could have finished and maybe I could have you know gotten a uh a music degree.
• 18:03
SPEAKER_06: To this day, I never I was never able to finish because um, you know, married, got a got marriage, and then I didn't have enough money to go back to school or the time.
• 18:13
SPEAKER_06: So um I I skipped that and then I went um in 77 I I moved to Florida, 1977.
• 18:22
SPEAKER_06: And I was doing all you know, freelancing, all kinds of of work, you know, club dates, weddings, bar mitzvahs.
• 18:28
SPEAKER_06: A funny story was I never played uh horror before, you know, the horas that the Jewish uh songs and stuff like that.
• 18:36
SPEAKER_06: And there was one song that cat uh this is gonna be funny for you guys, and uh every time I I heard him singing in in Hebrew, whatever, they were going, they sang to me like they were going cinnamon toast, cinnamon toast, and I told the the band leader, I said, uh, you know, this this these tunes are kind of fun to play, they're catchy, but why are you guys singing about cinnamon toast?
• 18:59
SPEAKER_06: Oh man, that man was rolling on the floor.
• 19:01
SPEAKER_06: No, cinnatov, zingatov, muzzle tov.
• 19:05
SPEAKER_06: Well, it sounds like cinnamon toast to me.
• 19:07
SPEAKER_06: You know, I'm from Puerto Rico.
• 19:08
SPEAKER_06: What the hell do I?
• 19:10
  SPEAKER_02: That is awesome.
• 19:12
  SPEAKER_02: That is awesome.
• 19:12
SPEAKER_06: You know, things like that.
• 19:13
SPEAKER_06: And uh the the the the the way that I got into Miami Sound Machine was that I was at that time in 1984, was when I joined the band.
• 19:24
SPEAKER_06: At that time, I had that weekend, the weekend before, I had come from a club date and I was totally fed up with the business.
• 19:30
  SPEAKER_06: It had been slow.
• 19:31
SPEAKER_06: I was married, four children, and I was very depressed.
• 19:36
SPEAKER_06: And I told my wife, that's it.
• 19:37
SPEAKER_06: You know, I'm gonna have to get something else because I we gotta get end to meet, you know.
• 19:42
  SPEAKER_06: I'm just I'm struggling.
• 19:43
SPEAKER_06: And she said, I heard a band on the radio uh on Y100, and they have a hit album.
• 19:50
SPEAKER_06: Why don't you see if you can audition for them?
• 19:52
SPEAKER_06: And I said, if they have a hit record on on the radio, they have a band already.
• 19:58
  SPEAKER_06: They don't need me.
• 19:59
SPEAKER_06: These people don't need me.
• 20:01
SPEAKER_06: Oh wow, and she said, Oh, they they're I I guess they're for all from Cuba, but they live in Miami and they and they have a hit album.
• 20:08
SPEAKER_06: And I said, You mean you mean like a bunch of Cubans trying to play top 40?
• 20:12
  SPEAKER_06: Give me a break.
• 20:14
  SPEAKER_06: You know, I hadn't heard that.
• 20:16
SPEAKER_04: You haven't heard it yet.
• 20:17
  SPEAKER_04: That's right.
• 20:18
SPEAKER_06: So that's uh that Sunday night I had to go to the Omni Hotel to do a gig.
• 20:23
SPEAKER_06: I think it was with Willie Chirino, and um, and I I said, I'm gonna turn on the radio and see what happens.
• 20:29
SPEAKER_06: So I turned on the radio.
• 20:33
SPEAKER_06: The second song or the first song that popped out, so I said, Well, maybe that's maybe that's the one.
• 20:41
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, then because yeah, this um Miami Sound machine with her head, gloria, with her head, uh call it, you know, blah, blah, blah.
• 20:49
SPEAKER_06: You know, I'll go home and I told my wife, yeah, I heard them.
• 20:52
SPEAKER_06: They, you know, they sound pretty good.
• 20:56
SPEAKER_06: And then uh in the morning, I I woke up and I get a call from Randy Barlow, who unbeknownst to me, was already in the band.
• 21:04
  SPEAKER_06: He was playing trumpet.
• 21:06
SPEAKER_06: And I said, Hey Teddy, uh uh, are you available for next weekend?
• 21:10
SPEAKER_06: Uh um uh we need somebody uh to come in and rehearse in the middle of the week.
• 21:14
SPEAKER_06: Uh, there is a uh uh three or four-day uh trip to to Central America for a Festival de la Canción or something like that.
• 21:22
SPEAKER_06: And we need a trombone player, I thought of you, and maybe you were interested.
• 21:26
SPEAKER_06: And my wife was not not too far from the phone, and then I said, Oh yeah, sure.
• 21:30
SPEAKER_06: You know, it's he said, Yeah, it's an upcoming band.
• 21:32
  SPEAKER_06: I think you'll like it.
• 21:33
SPEAKER_06: And what's the name of the band?
• 21:34
SPEAKER_06: Oh, it's Miami Sound Machine.
• 21:36
SPEAKER_06: And my wife overheard it because she had she was the one that had the the the the premonition that I'm I was gonna wind up with them, and I told her, Well, I guess your prayers were answered because they're calling you.
• 21:50
SPEAKER_06: So it was a I went on a Tuesday to Emilia's house and met Gloria Emilia.
• 21:55
  SPEAKER_06: We rehearsed.
• 21:56
SPEAKER_06: Uh that was still with the old band, and uh after we Did the gig, you know, with the three or four days we, you know, before we even before we took the plane back to Miami, Gloria and Amelia sat down with me and said, Hey, uh, we really like the way you sound, and you get along really well with the band and and and sound great.
• 22:13
SPEAKER_06: And uh, would you like to stay with us?
• 22:15
SPEAKER_02: That actually leads us to to our next question, uh Teddy, which is what when that happened, when you know, after that uh rehearsal um and that gig, what what was your impression uh of everyone?
• 22:27
SPEAKER_02: Not just uh Gloria and Emilio, but the band.
• 22:30
SPEAKER_06: Well, at that time, um, they you know, they were, you know, they had played the stuff really well.
• 22:37
SPEAKER_06: I mean, um, and it was fun to play with them, and it was just Randy and myself doing the choreography and the horns.
• 22:45
SPEAKER_06: And I didn't know that uh eventually uh Emilio was uh already, or he had been planning, or something happened that he replaced everybody.
• 22:54
SPEAKER_06: He replaced uh in the course of just five or six months, all of a sudden George Casas came in with his whole band that was called uh Company, and they had been playing at Raffles and on 163rd Street.
• 23:08
SPEAKER_06: And I know them because I used to go and jam with them.
• 23:10
SPEAKER_06: That's where DeFaria was there at Calle, John Sakata was singing, uh Joy Francis was singing, uh Robert Rodriguez was playing drums, and of course, Clay and George uh on piano and bass.
• 23:23
SPEAKER_06: Uh and you know, and and all of a sudden, you know, you know, one day the whole band came in and George became George and Clay became the uh the main guys, you know, um musical director and co-musical director and producers.
• 23:38
SPEAKER_06: And you know, it was a whole different vibe uh with with them.
• 23:43
SPEAKER_06: It was, you know, uh I think it was the musicianship was uh at a little higher level.
• 23:51
  SPEAKER_06: Yes.
• 23:52
SPEAKER_06: And you joined you joined.
• 23:54
SPEAKER_06: Anybody come from UM, you know, those guys are exceptional, not only just talent-wise, but but proficiency-wise, you know, uh they masters of their instruments, you know.
• 24:05
SPEAKER_06: And the funny thing is, I had known George from Puerto Rico since the late 60s because uh George used to play with a band called the Challengers.
• 24:14
  SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
• 24:15
SPEAKER_06: And George and I had played together before you know pre-Miami Sound Machine in the 70s.
• 24:20
SPEAKER_06: In fact, uh I had a band uh in Fort Lauderdale, and he had been my bass player for a few uh occasions.
• 24:28
SPEAKER_06: And uh so I knew George from from way back.
• 24:30
SPEAKER_06: And then when we when we ran into each other, said he, hey man, that's so it was it it just became like a like a really good uh like a family thing over the years, you know, it became really, really great to work.
• 24:43
  SPEAKER_02: Well that's that family.
• 24:44
SPEAKER_02: I mean, you joined during this incredible incredible period when Miami Sound Machine was becoming a worldwide phenomenon.
• 24:52
SPEAKER_02: Did you realize at the time just how big everything was becoming, or were you all moving too fast to really process it?
• 24:59
SPEAKER_06: I thought I had I had an inkling that that was developing.
• 25:03
SPEAKER_06: I just didn't know at what depth.
• 25:06
SPEAKER_06: It took a while because uh, you know, we were doing um a lot of uh uh state fairs, you know, uh in Texas, and uh, you know, we were doing things like that, you know, uh big arenas, but not not until not until we got to do the you know the serious concerts like in in Holland and Germany, you know, the big, big, big stadiums, you know, like that.
• 25:32
SPEAKER_06: That's when I went like, oh, and uh, and we did a lot of TV shows too, you know.
• 25:37
  SPEAKER_06: Great.
• 25:38
SPEAKER_06: And that's where I met my hero.
• 25:40
SPEAKER_06: My my my all-time trumpet hero has always been Doc, Doc Severinson.
• 25:45
  SPEAKER_06: That's why I have my busters.
• 25:47
  SPEAKER_06: Oh, T.
• 25:48
SPEAKER_06: But I'm letting my goatee grow again because I'm feeling naked.
• 25:54
SPEAKER_06: But everybody says, hey, you look like Doc Severinson.
• 25:57
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's awesome.
• 25:58
SPEAKER_05: So when you started playing the big arenas, you know, that kind of leads us into the next question.
• 26:02
SPEAKER_05: But you know, that was the during the let it lose cuts both ways period.
• 26:05
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so by by the time you're you know, you're not only playing trumpet and trombone, but you're also singing background vocals and then contributing the horn arrangements.
• 26:14
SPEAKER_05: How did your role in the role in the within the band evolve?
• 26:18
SPEAKER_06: It was um, I think it was a a collective collaboration of uh of George Clay and myself.
• 26:28
SPEAKER_06: Um I guess I and Randy also.
• 26:32
SPEAKER_06: Randy was also a big collaborator, um, arranging wisely.
• 26:36
SPEAKER_06: The Mitierra horn arrangement was his arrangement.
• 26:41
SPEAKER_06: Um I did a lot of stuff on Oye Mikanto and and other things that we did, you know.
• 26:47
SPEAKER_06: Uh primarily I did um a lot of the adaptations for from the records to be played live.
• 26:55
SPEAKER_06: We grew from a three point uh three-horn section, trumpet alto, and and trombone or trumpet tenor and trombone to two trumpets, trombone, and two saxes.
• 27:06
SPEAKER_06: So I was trying to figure out how to keep the color and the texture that identified the Miami Sound Machine horn section as such.
• 27:15
SPEAKER_06: Just like uh Tower of Power has a has a stamp that when you hear them, the way uh Mick Gillette and and I forget the other guy's name, I'm you know, one of my great heroes.
• 27:26
SPEAKER_06: I can't think of his name, but every band, Earth, Wind and Fire, uh Chicago, for instance, you know, they have they have their own horn style that they have in them.
• 27:36
SPEAKER_06: And we have our own horn style too.
• 27:38
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and that's kind of what got me into the to you guys, is right.
• 27:42
SPEAKER_05: My dad, my dad, you were mentioning Earth, Wind and Fire, and that's what I grew up listening to, Chicago and Earth, Wind and Fire, and those horns is what what led him to you guys.
• 27:52
SPEAKER_05: And um, so how much you know you you told us about Oyo Mikanto and the arrangements, how much room did you have to bring your own personality into the music?
• 28:02
SPEAKER_06: Well, it all boiled down to to Gloria and Emilio approving it.
• 28:08
SPEAKER_06: You know, we we we honed and we tried a lot of ideas, and she's uh she always insisted on on trying a lot of things and sitting back and and listening.
• 28:20
SPEAKER_06: Uh, let me tell you something uh really interesting about Oya Micanto.
• 28:24
SPEAKER_06: I I took I had I recorded about six or seven takes of that solo.
• 28:30
  SPEAKER_04: That's quite a solo.
• 28:31
SPEAKER_06: And Gloria came in into the studio and she constructed the solo that you that you hear today on the record.
• 28:39
SPEAKER_06: That was her picking out the best lines of each take that I did.
• 28:43
  SPEAKER_06: Oh wow.
• 28:44
SPEAKER_06: Wow, so that she's got phenomenal ears, uh, you know, for melody and uh the build-up and uh you know the development of an idea and how it resolves, etc.
• 28:54
SPEAKER_06: I mean, and and then I and she said, Can you play it again?
• 29:00
SPEAKER_06: Oh shit, yeah, I can play it in my sleep.
• 29:02
SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna go, oh she wants me to play the solo again.
• 29:05
  SPEAKER_06: Oh my god.
• 29:06
SPEAKER_04: Wow, you're the best of seven takes.
• 29:08
SPEAKER_04: Now put it all together and do that on Twitter.
• 29:11
SPEAKER_06: And I did, and now and I did because I you know, I was still and I didn't have time to write to write it down.
• 29:17
SPEAKER_06: I had to like I listened to, I just spent like maybe 20 minutes memorizing it because you know it's you know, it's uh it's not something extremely difficult, but it's not something uh easy either to to do, you know, when when she says play it back, you know.
• 29:36
SPEAKER_06: I want you to play this this say this solo just like I wrote, like I constructed it.
• 29:40
SPEAKER_06: I want you to play it back.
• 29:41
  SPEAKER_04: It's impressive every time.
• 29:42
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's my that's my all-time favorite album.
• 29:45
SPEAKER_05: That's one that you can put on top like there's no all-time favorite album.
• 29:51
SPEAKER_02: But that goes along with that kind of that that common thread that all of you guys have shared, that just her ear, that sensibility that she has, you know.
• 29:59
  SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, it's amazing.
• 30:02
SPEAKER_06: She she she notices things that sometimes we go, huh?
• 30:06
  SPEAKER_06: Wow.
• 30:07
SPEAKER_06: And yeah, it's just you know, no, listen, there's there is uh something in there that is that's not quite uh making it, you know, and uh she's she's really accurate when it comes to that.
• 30:18
SPEAKER_06: But but she is not uh, you know, I wouldn't uh she's not like she uh let us have the the the democracy, you know, it's just very a democratic thing, you know.
• 30:30
SPEAKER_06: She likes to hear everybody's opinion about something, and then she evaluates and then she makes a decision, obviously, because it's her show.
• 30:38
SPEAKER_06: It's uh you know, I have seen her, you know, uh just overrule Emilio in a lot of stuff.
• 30:46
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 30:47
SPEAKER_06: And I have seen also her uh approve a lot of stuff that Emilio says, but but more more often I think, you know, and he just lets her, you know, uh do make the decision making as far as shows and her performance, because it's her on stage, you know?
• 31:03
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
• 31:04
SPEAKER_06: Uh but she's she's very respectful of all of us.
• 31:07
SPEAKER_06: And I think that she she does uh they both love the band.
• 31:11
SPEAKER_06: They're always they uh they always treat us you know with first class treatment, in my opinion.
• 31:17
SPEAKER_06: At least I'd you know, I I I don't have anything I don't have anything bad to say, honestly.
• 31:25
SPEAKER_06: Uh you know, uh you know, we've had just like in any band, there's there has been moments where you know we're irritated with each other, but never never with her.
• 31:36
SPEAKER_06: You know, I've gotten irritated with George and Clay, and yeah, and we've had arguments of oh, this doesn't sound good.
• 31:44
SPEAKER_06: You know, like when we become kids and then Gloria just laughed, okay, children, okay, children.
• 31:49
SPEAKER_04: But that's so that speaks to the brotherhood that you all had as well.
• 31:52
SPEAKER_04: Like, yeah, I mean, yeah, you had a shorthand and a chemistry together.
• 31:56
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, and even after all these years, we we come even closer.
• 32:00
SPEAKER_06: You know, we you know, we've uh all this all this uh uh uh recent engagements that we've been uh man, the the whole atmosphere has been a fun, happiness, uh collaboration, co-op, you know, everybody working for the same for the same cause, making the band sound great and making her look good and looking great on stage.
• 32:24
SPEAKER_06: And you know, it was it's just joy.
• 32:26
  SPEAKER_06: It's a and and I miss it.
• 32:28
  SPEAKER_06: I I miss it.
• 32:29
SPEAKER_06: I I I I'm still hoping that she has uh a couple of more concerts because it, you know, as it seems to me like you know.
• 32:37
  SPEAKER_06: We're ready, Teddy.
• 32:40
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, and you guys sounded phenomenal in Chile.
• 32:45
SPEAKER_05: It was so so good.
• 32:47
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you know, and uh so uh and then you compare it with with with what I'm doing uh locally here in Orlando.
• 32:56
SPEAKER_06: I play mostly in some small jazz clubs in Melbourne and and Cocoa Beach, uh, which is a whole different world from the world of being on tour with Gloria.
• 33:07
  SPEAKER_06: I mean it's come it's like you're back back to reality.
• 33:10
  SPEAKER_06: It's like I'm back to where I was 40, 50 years ago.
• 33:16
SPEAKER_06: Back to back to the nickel and dime gigs and stuff, you know.
• 33:20
SPEAKER_06: But hey, the fact that I can still play, you know, that God's given me the the the strength and the ability and uh and that my body can still handle playing the trumpet because it's not it's not easy, you know.
• 33:34
SPEAKER_06: It's not physically, it's it's a hard instrument, a very hard instrument, you know.
• 33:41
SPEAKER_06: You have to use your stomach muscles, you have to have you know endurance to play for three hours straight.
• 33:47
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 33:48
SPEAKER_06: And when you gotta be 75, it's not it's impressive, but it's but we are we are getting old also as a fans, exactly.
• 34:00
  SPEAKER_06: That's it.
• 34:01
SPEAKER_00: Talking about um concerts, there is a rumor that you are coming back to Spain for next year.
• 34:08
SPEAKER_00: Have you heard anything about that?
• 34:11
  SPEAKER_00: Can you say anything?
• 34:13
SPEAKER_06: No, um, in fact, um you're telling letting me know now for the first time, you know.
• 34:18
  SPEAKER_06: I'm I uh I hope so.
• 34:21
SPEAKER_06: I really hope so because uh I wanted to go move to Spain myself.
• 34:26
SPEAKER_06: I wanted to move uh to live there in Spain.
• 34:29
SPEAKER_06: If not, if nothing else, you know, live in Spain for a year or two.
• 34:33
SPEAKER_06: Uh I have uh from musicians, friends of mine, and one of them is a saxophonist by the name of Bobby Martinez.
• 34:41
SPEAKER_06: He plays in uh in in uh in Madrid in one of the you know with a big band and they're very popular.
• 34:47
SPEAKER_06: I know I know quite a few musicians that live in uh in Spain.
• 34:50
SPEAKER_02: Teddy, we're we're we're ready, we're ready for you guys to go back on tour or a concert or something.
• 34:58
SPEAKER_06: I'm more ready than you guys are.
• 35:00
SPEAKER_02: I I finally paid off all the the debt that I had from the 90 millas tour.
• 35:05
  SPEAKER_02: So I think we're I'm good now.
• 35:06
SPEAKER_02: I could I could go back into debt with some new concerts.
• 35:10
SPEAKER_06: I am dying, I am dying to go back.
• 35:13
SPEAKER_06: I uh I think that you know you have to uh uh you know uh Gloria is also getting up there, you know.
• 35:20
SPEAKER_02: Um she has so much.
• 35:22
  SPEAKER_06: I'm older than Emilio.
• 35:23
SPEAKER_06: Emilio is about three years younger than me, and Gloria is about you know, like five or six years younger than me.
• 35:29
SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, it's it's tough to also just like it's tough to play trumpet, it's tough to maintain that the uh physical uh uh vocal, physical uh ability, and more not the her ability, I bring her ability is is always there.
• 35:46
SPEAKER_06: It's the same thing that happens to me.
• 35:47
SPEAKER_06: You know, I I can play super high notes for you know for about an hour after that.
• 35:56
SPEAKER_06: The the range and the and you know the uh the fatigue starts setting in, you know, fatigue getting tired starts setting in, you know.
• 36:03
SPEAKER_06: And that's frustrating because my lips are still in perfect shape, you know.
• 36:08
SPEAKER_02: Well listen, we're we're ready when you guys are but you know, so you've you've traveled, you've traveled the world, you know, together and spent countless hours on planes, buses, backstage, and in hotels.
• 36:19
SPEAKER_02: What when you think about those touring years, what are some of the moments you remember the most?
• 36:26
SPEAKER_06: Well travel traveling on the on the bus was uh it was it was always um it was always great.
• 36:34
SPEAKER_06: I think I remember one time where one of our uh when uh our driver got very tired.
• 36:43
SPEAKER_06: No, no, he uh the the the bus where George and myself and Clay and some of you know were uh driving late at night.
• 36:52
SPEAKER_06: We had about maybe two hours left, and Kenny, uh the guy, the driver's uh name, it was Kenny, and uh he needed to go to the bathroom.
• 37:01
SPEAKER_06: And he was still driving, and I was just talking to him, having a conversation with him next to him.
• 37:07
SPEAKER_06: I said, Teddy, I gotta go to the I gotta go to the bathroom really, really bad.
• 37:11
  SPEAKER_06: So take over.
• 37:12
SPEAKER_06: I didn't even have time to to answer, so he jumps off the drive, the he jumps off the driver's seat of the bus.
• 37:20
SPEAKER_06: This bus is driving like 60, 70 miles an hour.
• 37:25
SPEAKER_06: And I immediately jumped in and I'm like, and he goes to the bathroom, and about two seconds right after he goes to the bathroom, George comes out.
• 37:36
SPEAKER_06: Uh he was taking a nap.
• 37:38
SPEAKER_06: I was like, Oh yeah, Kenny, like, you're not Kenny.
• 37:43
SPEAKER_06: What are you doing driving the bus?
• 37:48
  SPEAKER_06: What happened to Kenny?
• 37:49
  SPEAKER_02: Wow, that's funny.
• 37:51
SPEAKER_02: Who who would you say was your partner partner in crime on the road?
• 37:55
SPEAKER_06: At the beginning, it was uh Rafael Padilla with uh with the old band.
• 38:00
SPEAKER_06: Okay, and he unfortunately passed away uh too young.
• 38:04
SPEAKER_06: But then after that, um I used to hang around a lot with with Randy Barlow and uh and Mike Scaglione, uh and with George, and uh and then with Albin when Albin Burgos came came in in the band, you know, by that time.
• 38:21
SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, by that time we we finally got our our own rooms.
• 38:26
SPEAKER_06: But before that, I was rooming with uh Jim Trumpeter, and he was kind of hard, hard, hard to get along with, you know.
• 38:34
SPEAKER_06: But yeah, we managed, you know.
• 38:37
SPEAKER_06: Uh he was a he still was a brilliant player then, and he's he's a phenomenal musician, pianist.
• 38:44
SPEAKER_06: Uh teaches in Chicago now, and his grades have always been a great great player.
• 38:49
SPEAKER_06: But uh yeah, I mean, my God.
• 38:53
SPEAKER_06: We uh Gloria uh on one of the trips uh they decided to pull a prank on me at the uh at the uh airport in France.
• 39:04
SPEAKER_06: I was sitting calmly in in one of the chairs, and uh Gloria and Amelia talked to security and uh they concocted a prank for them to give me a hard time, right?
• 39:14
  SPEAKER_06: Oh no.
• 39:15
SPEAKER_06: So I'm reading a magazine, you know, I'm reading a magazine, and then these two big French guys, you know, sitting stand right in front of me and staring at me, and it's very serious.
• 39:28
SPEAKER_06: And then one of them says, Monsieur, you have to come with us.
• 39:32
SPEAKER_06: Oh no, oh no, so I get up, and they each one get on on one side, the other one gets on the other side.
• 39:39
  SPEAKER_06: They literally carried me.
• 39:42
SPEAKER_06: No way carried me away in front of the band.
• 39:47
SPEAKER_06: They paraded me in front of the band, and Gloria and Emilia are going like no, just shaking their heads, an expression of no, this can't be.
• 39:58
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, everybody in the band will say, How could you?
• 40:00
SPEAKER_02: You know, like with the expression, you're like, what's going through your mind at this moment?
• 40:03
SPEAKER_06: And I'm going like, What uh?
• 40:05
  SPEAKER_06: I mean, yeah, and I'm thinking, I don't think I have any drugs.
• 40:10
  SPEAKER_06: I mean, do I know?
• 40:13
SPEAKER_06: Well, anyway, make a long story short.
• 40:17
SPEAKER_06: They made me open the trumpet, and uh, we have to check your instrument.
• 40:22
SPEAKER_06: So I had to take the entire trumpet apart, right?
• 40:24
SPEAKER_06: So I took the trumpet apart, put it back together, and then he finally said the qu I was very scared, and then he finally said the question that I went from scared to really pissed off.
• 40:36
  SPEAKER_06: Oh no.
• 40:37
SPEAKER_06: So he says, Um, you play trumpet and you play the trumpet.
• 40:40
SPEAKER_06: And so, how do I know you play the trumpet?
• 40:45
  SPEAKER_06: How do I okay?
• 40:47
  SPEAKER_06: I'll show you.
• 40:48
SPEAKER_06: So I took the trumpet, put the mouthpiece on, I went pay.
• 40:54
SPEAKER_06: I played the French national hymn.
• 40:56
SPEAKER_06: They all went like oh, and I played it really loud, the entire airport heard it.
• 41:06
SPEAKER_06: Believe me, it carries, and it carried all over the airport, and they all went like this, and then the entire band started laughing, everybody started laughing, and that's when I found out ah, I see now, and then the two guys wanted a picture with me after they made it all ended well, but I was nervous for at least 20 minutes, you know, was like that's right.
• 41:33
SPEAKER_00: I was going to ask you why every time we mention John Rain uh to any um Miami Soma team member, they start laughing, but I think you answered that question already.
• 41:44
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the word that everyone uses the word that everyone uses is he's a hoot.
• 41:50
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, people have stories.
• 41:52
SPEAKER_06: I always I always been very ex you know, a very eccentric guy, you know.
• 41:56
SPEAKER_06: I mean, uh I I do things that you know that that you know that they wouldn't do, you know, they get off, you know, um, I get off the rails sometimes, you know.
• 42:08
SPEAKER_06: Uh one time we were at uh one time we were at uh at the um what is it the in Miami, the uh where they have the basketball, the convention center with the and I think Gloria was having a uh meeting, uh Alonzo Jones, who used to be the center, uh one uh uh one of the big guys, one of the very, very famous big uh basketball players.
• 42:32
SPEAKER_06: And um, and I came out on I was so interested in talking to Gloria that I bypassed the guy and he's extended his hand for me to shake, and then I just ignored him.
• 42:42
SPEAKER_06: I went right back to the guy going, he he's trying to take your hand, and I'm going, Oh my god, and he laughed so hard, and it's oh my god, I'm so sorry.
• 42:54
SPEAKER_06: I was just like so, oh man, I don't worry, you know, guts, you know, uh you know, stuff like that.
• 43:01
SPEAKER_06: Um you know, I mean, there's other stories that I could that I could tell, but I I would really it would be a loss in, you know, waiting to happen.
• 43:09
SPEAKER_04: You know how stories sort of get snowballed over time, and how a story becomes infamous, it becomes a taller and taller tale over the years.
• 43:19
SPEAKER_04: There's a story about you that Gloria has told on numerous uh interviews, and I want to corroborate it a little bit.
• 43:28
SPEAKER_04: There's a story about you uh wearing a button-down shirt and ironing it on yourself and having marks across your neck.
• 43:38
SPEAKER_04: How true is that story from the way it's that is very true.
• 43:43
SPEAKER_06: And uh let me tell you why that why that happened, you know, because I uh I think the night before I I really had a serious night of of partying, and then and then by the by the time I realized that we were wearing uh a certain type of costume.
• 44:00
SPEAKER_06: That they wanted it was wrinkled.
• 44:01
SPEAKER_06: I mean, it was just so wrinkled.
• 44:03
SPEAKER_06: I didn't have time at the hotel to iron it on.
• 44:06
SPEAKER_06: And you know, and then I I fell asleep in the dressing room.
• 44:10
SPEAKER_06: And about maybe 15 or 20 minutes before going on stage, I you know, and we were like, Oh my god, this looks really durable.
• 44:18
  SPEAKER_06: And I I was in such a panic.
• 44:21
SPEAKER_06: I and I tried I first tried the iron, so I went in, and then I burned myself out like a little triangle on my neck.
• 44:28
SPEAKER_06: Then that didn't work too well.
• 44:30
SPEAKER_06: So there was a steamer, and I tried the steamer, then I had a square on my chest.
• 44:35
  SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
• 44:38
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I mean, and uh, and I was trying to cover it because I I knew she was gonna see it, and yeah, she she did see it, or somebody actually must have told her, hey, look, Teddy's ironing his shirt on it, you know, on him.
• 44:52
  SPEAKER_06: And she's like Teddy, you know, you're like you're you're crazy.
• 44:55
  SPEAKER_06: You're you're just absolutely nuts.
• 44:58
  SPEAKER_06: One of the kind.
• 44:59
SPEAKER_05: Are there any other Teddy Moulette life hacks that we should know about avoid at all costs?
• 45:05
SPEAKER_06: Another famous story that they that they um that they like to tell is like when we when we went to Puerto Rico, the first time we went to Puerto Rico, they had a lobby call.
• 45:16
SPEAKER_06: It was supposed to be at like 10 o'clock in the morning.
• 45:20
SPEAKER_06: And uh, I think I was either run ran was running late, and I get a phone call at the at the in the hotel room, and it's the uh road manager, Daddy, where the hell are you?
• 45:32
  SPEAKER_06: Oh, I'm in room 103.
• 45:37
SPEAKER_06: Where the hell are you?
• 45:38
  SPEAKER_06: I'm in room 103.
• 45:40
SPEAKER_06: Like, really, like, you're supposed to be down here, man.
• 45:44
  SPEAKER_02: That's funny.
• 45:45
SPEAKER_06: I mean, uh, there's so many, you know, there's so many.
• 45:49
SPEAKER_02: When we told when we told Gloria that you were gonna be on the show, she wrote me, she wrote me this message.
• 45:55
SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna read it to you.
• 45:56
SPEAKER_02: She wrote, uh-oh, buckle your seatbelt.
• 45:59
SPEAKER_02: Please ask him about the giant computer he took on the road the day he broke his arm when he fell off the stage in Vegas, but left town, and they didn't tell him until they could track him down 10 days later and the day he ironed his neck.
• 46:14
SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, she just kept on listing all these different yeah, that was true.
• 46:21
SPEAKER_06: I had set up my computer and we were there for a few days, and then the computer would look like it was part of the furniture.
• 46:30
SPEAKER_06: And I totally I had just bought it, and I forgot that I had just bought it, and I packed my bag and I left.
• 46:36
  SPEAKER_06: I left the computer.
• 46:37
  SPEAKER_06: I just left.
• 46:38
  SPEAKER_06: Oh my god.
• 46:40
SPEAKER_06: And I didn't even notice it when I got when I checked into the next hotel.
• 46:44
SPEAKER_06: I checked in, you know, never noticed that I had left a computer behind, or I was even, you know, I was pretty much of a space cadet back then.
• 46:55
SPEAKER_06: The first time we went to Amsterdam, we were playing at the American Hotel.
• 46:59
SPEAKER_06: That was it, that was my very first gig abroad with with the sound machine.
• 47:04
SPEAKER_06: And uh, and it was with the old band.
• 47:08
SPEAKER_06: And uh in you know, in in in Holland, you know, uh they the hotel, at least that hotel, it was co-ed, right?
• 47:17
SPEAKER_06: So you go to the gym, and you know, there's uh no separate bathroom for a male or female.
• 47:22
SPEAKER_06: It's the same shower, you know.
• 47:24
SPEAKER_06: You could be taking a shower, and next to you there could be uh a woman taking a shower, and that's exactly what happened.
• 47:31
SPEAKER_06: I was taking a shower, uh, but you know, totally naked.
• 47:36
SPEAKER_06: I'm like, and I the next thing I know, I open my eyes, and here's this woman, well-developed woman taking a shower.
• 47:44
SPEAKER_06: And then I panicked because I oh shit, am I in the wrong?
• 47:48
SPEAKER_06: Am I in the wrong?
• 47:50
  SPEAKER_06: Right.
• 47:51
SPEAKER_06: Because I, you know, I thought it was I thought I was in the right bathroom, you know, or the right, and she actually, you know, she saw the expression on my face.
• 48:01
SPEAKER_06: I said, No, you're in the right place.
• 48:02
  SPEAKER_06: It's co-ed here in in Holland.
• 48:04
SPEAKER_06: Oh it's all co-ed here in Holland.
• 48:09
  SPEAKER_01: I'm going, okay, okay.
• 48:13
SPEAKER_06: Got it, got it, yeah, sure, yeah, yeah.
• 48:15
  SPEAKER_06: That's kind of neat.
• 48:19
SPEAKER_06: Another time was uh another time I don't want to go into the real detail, but this was super funny.
• 48:26
SPEAKER_06: Uh, we were walking around the uh um red light district, and it was Gloria Emilio Becky, uh, all the people from Sony, and some of us in the in the band, you know, and uh there was an outside bar.
• 48:43
SPEAKER_06: Small little small little bar, it was a circular bar.
• 48:47
SPEAKER_06: And we stopped there for uh a couple of beers, and I noticed that in the center of the bar there's this pole, big pole, right?
• 48:58
SPEAKER_06: So sure enough, about five or ten minutes after we're all sitting there, sitting there talking and uh uh having beers, this beautiful girl comes up on stage with a with a very small bathing suit, and you know, she starts doing the pole dancing, right?
• 49:18
SPEAKER_06: After that, then she takes everything off, and then everybody's like, okay.
• 49:23
SPEAKER_06: Well, you know, we're in Amsterdam, you know, that's it's expected.
• 49:28
SPEAKER_06: What was not expected was another guy about 6'8 or 6'9, he was huge or muscular, steps into the you know, gets up there too with a girl, and uh sure enough, 10 or 15 minutes later, they're they're doing the deep, they're doing the throes of the of the real thing.
• 49:50
SPEAKER_06: Gloria's eyes weren't this big, and he was Emilio is going, we gotta go, we gotta go.
• 49:57
SPEAKER_06: And she said, Emilio, and Vicky's going, Oh, I want to watch this.
• 50:06
SPEAKER_06: So the the whole thing happened.
• 50:09
SPEAKER_06: We're I was already on the floor laughing my ass off.
• 50:13
SPEAKER_06: And uh, and then you know, they get off stage and Emilia, yeah, we yeah, we gotta go, we gotta go.
• 50:20
SPEAKER_06: And then what happened was that the big guy uh found out that Gloria was there and he wanted an autograph, so he didn't really have time to change, so he's just wearing a towel.
• 50:32
SPEAKER_06: You're talking about a guy that is six foot nine, okay.
• 50:38
SPEAKER_06: With little gloria, and and he asked for Gloria, uh Gloria's autograph, and Gloria, you know, you know, uh you know, says, Yeah, sure.
• 50:46
  SPEAKER_06: I will she's writing the autograph.
• 50:48
SPEAKER_06: She's standing in front of the guy.
• 50:49
SPEAKER_06: Now you got to remember if Gloria's five foot three, four, so her line of vision, you know.
• 50:57
  SPEAKER_06: I don't really have to.
• 50:58
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you can do the math in your head, right?
• 51:01
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, standing right in front.
• 51:04
SPEAKER_06: It's a massive man with massive everything, everything in his body is massive.
• 51:12
  SPEAKER_06: That is hilarious.
• 51:16
  SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
• 51:23
SPEAKER_06: He's getting desperate by the second trying to pull Glory out of there.
• 51:32
SPEAKER_06: That was really awkward for her, you know.
• 51:34
SPEAKER_06: But it oh my god, but uh that was a memorable night.
• 51:38
  SPEAKER_06: I'll never forget that.
• 51:39
SPEAKER_06: I don't know if she's gonna be happy to hear this story, though.
• 51:43
  SPEAKER_05: She's got a great autograph, and she's got a legible autograph.
• 51:46
SPEAKER_05: So that one had to have been probably the the uh worst autograph she ever signed.
• 51:51
SPEAKER_05: It was it was it was tough.
• 51:53
SPEAKER_06: It was, you know, but you know, I mean, Gloria, she uh Gloria handles herself well in no matter how hard the situation.
• 52:01
SPEAKER_06: Yes, you know you gotta give that to her, man.
• 52:04
SPEAKER_06: I mean, she's she's uh yeah, she's super professional, yeah, super, super good person.
• 52:12
  SPEAKER_06: They both are.
• 52:13
SPEAKER_06: Uh I had an accident in 2014 where I I another one of my antics, I was trying to fix uh uh some uh lights in my garage, and uh I went out of the safety, you know, there's a safety area in this in the attic, and I was crawling, I didn't have a flashlight, and I fell through one of the um, you know, those uh sound panels that you have on the ceiling.
• 52:39
  SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
• 52:39
SPEAKER_06: And it was a nine nine-foot fall.
• 52:42
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
• 52:44
SPEAKER_06: And the reason I didn't die was because I bounced off the seat of a of a of a tractor that I have, a lawn a lawnmower tractor, but I still fell on my left side to the to the floor and I broke my leg from the knee down, my left leg.
• 52:59
SPEAKER_06: And shattered my my uh I shattered my ankle.
• 53:04
SPEAKER_06: And right there, that was the end of all the gigs that I had for the year because I had to go into the hospital.
• 53:10
SPEAKER_06: I was working with Blood, Sweat and Tears at that time.
• 53:14
SPEAKER_06: Uh, I also lost uh a gig that uh I wanted to do with Justin Timberlake because I had worked previously with Justin in uh 2003, 2004 Justified tour.
• 53:25
SPEAKER_06: I did that with him, and he wanted me back.
• 53:28
SPEAKER_06: And he wanted me back, and uh my and I had an entertainment lawyer at the time, and she told uh Justin Teddy's in the hospital.
• 53:35
SPEAKER_06: He had an accident, he broke his leg.
• 53:37
SPEAKER_06: I lost all I last I lost all the gigs from from from that time on.
• 53:45
SPEAKER_06: And Gloria and Emilio and a lot of other people, uh a lot of other people uh ray did some some fun racers on my behalf, and luckily I didn't lose my house.
• 53:56
SPEAKER_06: I was very close and losing everything.
• 53:59
SPEAKER_06: I mean, totally everything, you know.
• 54:01
  SPEAKER_06: Wow.
• 54:02
SPEAKER_06: And thanks to them and and and a lot of other people, one of one of the guys that's probably one of Gloria's biggest friends, uh Ray Beard.
• 54:09
  SPEAKER_06: Oh yeah.
• 54:11
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, Ray, Ray helped me.
• 54:13
SPEAKER_06: Uh he sent me, you know, a considerable amount of money, and I always, you know, thank him.
• 54:18
SPEAKER_06: Uh to this day, uh, you know, I thank everybody that that that uh saved my life, basically.
• 54:24
  SPEAKER_06: Uh during the stepens.
• 54:27
SPEAKER_06: But yeah, it was it was very close.
• 54:29
SPEAKER_06: And uh since that happened, you know, I really haven't been able to run.
• 54:33
  SPEAKER_06: I used to run.
• 54:34
SPEAKER_06: Uh now I'm I I'm getting a little more mobility on my left leg, but um, and it's never been the same.
• 54:41
SPEAKER_06: But um, you know, you keep moving, you know, keep going on, basically.
• 54:45
SPEAKER_04: Teddy, it sounds like it sounds like you've had an extraordinary journey, an extraordinary career.
• 54:52
SPEAKER_04: Um and even just how mentioning Justin Timber like randomly like that, like you've had some pretty extraordinary collaborations.
• 55:00
SPEAKER_04: Like, aside from the Estefans, what have been some of your favorite artists to collaborate with?
• 55:09
  SPEAKER_04: Because you've done a lot.
• 55:11
SPEAKER_06: Thanks to the Stephans, I've I've recorded things for Mark Anthony and Jennifer Lopez.
• 55:18
SPEAKER_06: Um the the six years that I spent with blood with Blood, Sweat and Tears.
• 55:24
SPEAKER_06: And we actually had a had uh, I think it was a week in at the Blue Note, and we had Arturo Sandoval as a guest playing with us, and uh, and that's where we actually connected even at a deeper deeper level.
• 55:41
SPEAKER_06: Uh obviously the the two years that I spent with Justin, I did a lot of most of the horn arrangements for that show for Justin were my arrangements.
• 55:50
SPEAKER_06: I still have the scores in in my studio and my files, and and that was uh he was another guy that uh that was uh phenomenal also, you know, uh with the band.
• 56:03
SPEAKER_06: Uh respected band a lot.
• 56:06
SPEAKER_06: And uh it was great.
• 56:07
SPEAKER_06: It was a great uh and thanks to thanks to him, you know, uh we uh there was one time that uh Glor uh Justin took some time off.
• 56:16
SPEAKER_06: I think it was around October, and uh Gloria was had a gig uh in uh the Caesar's Palace that she was going to sub for Celine Dion.
• 56:27
  SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
• 56:28
SPEAKER_06: And um and I told Gloria, I said, I am off, but I'm on retainer from from Justin, and I have to be available, you know, but per the contract, I can't, I can't, you know, I can't perform.
• 56:43
SPEAKER_06: Uh you know, the only thing would be if you talk directly to Justin and he gives you explicit direct, you know, permission, you know, that I'm not gonna be violating my contract, they say, I'll talk to Justin.
• 56:58
SPEAKER_06: So she talked to Justin and I said, No, I don't have anything.
• 57:01
SPEAKER_06: I said I do have a I have a tonight show uh or some TV show, but uh that that's that song doesn't need horns, it's just uh rhythm section.
• 57:12
  SPEAKER_06: And so I don't I won't be needing him.
• 57:14
SPEAKER_06: Oh wow, and then while I was in Vegas, the musical director for Justin.
• 57:18
SPEAKER_06: Apparently, Justin didn't let him know.
• 57:21
SPEAKER_06: And and and Kevin, uh the musical director for Justin, said, Hey Teddy, what are you doing in Vegas working?
• 57:28
SPEAKER_06: You know, you're supposed you're the only retainer, you're not supposed to be doing that.
• 57:31
SPEAKER_06: I said, Well, Kevin, have you checked with Justin?
• 57:34
SPEAKER_06: Because Gloria called Gloria herself called and Justin approved it.
• 57:40
  SPEAKER_06: That's amazing.
• 57:40
SPEAKER_06: So why don't you talk to your boss first?
• 57:43
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's amazing.
• 57:45
SPEAKER_06: And he did, and said, Okay, man, I'm sorry.
• 57:47
SPEAKER_06: You know, anyway, he said, anyway, we don't need any horns.
• 57:50
SPEAKER_06: Like, well, thank you very much.
• 57:54
SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, Justin was like that.
• 57:56
SPEAKER_06: He he was uh and and and the way I got to meet Justin was uh because um way back uh we used to do grad nights at Disney with a horns with um uh InSync.
• 58:09
  SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
• 58:09
SPEAKER_06: Oh InSync loved the horn section of Miami Sound Machine, and Gloria liked InSync a lot, and so um they requested us to to appear with them you know and uh on the grad night.
• 58:22
SPEAKER_06: So so we went and it was a lot of fun working with those guys.
• 58:25
  SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's a fun fact.
• 58:26
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that was before that was before I um I started touring with him.
• 58:31
SPEAKER_06: I toured with him 2003 and 2004, which is the uh justified tour.
• 58:37
SPEAKER_06: That was a that that was uh and actually there's a few a few videos of me uh of uh that you can if you look under my name, Justin Timberlake Teddy Mulat, there's you know a live in London video where I'm playing Senorita, and then that's another one uh where I'm playing Senorita also in a huge uh uh concert that was uh done, I think it was in in Canada, I think it might have been in Ontario, Canada, for like 450,000 people.
• 59:05
SPEAKER_06: And it was supposed to be all rock bands, you know, ACDC, the Rolling Stones, Metallic, etc.
• 59:11
  SPEAKER_06: etc.
• 59:12
SPEAKER_06: How we wound up there, I don't know.
• 59:14
SPEAKER_06: When we when we started playing, they started throwing bottles at us.
• 59:18
SPEAKER_06: They didn't want us there.
• 59:20
SPEAKER_06: Oh wow it was supposed to be an all rock rock and roll band, and then I don't know, Justin talked to them, and then then after that, then the crowd is like yeah, but it was at first they they booed us, they were throwing bottles at us, they didn't want us there.
• 59:37
  SPEAKER_06: It was fun.
• 59:38
SPEAKER_06: So that's the biggest crowd I think I've ever from the stage point, you know.
• 59:45
  SPEAKER_06: I mean it's a sea of people.
• 59:47
  SPEAKER_06: I mean huge.
• 59:49
  SPEAKER_06: So yeah.
• 59:50
SPEAKER_05: So Teddy, after after all these records, tours, countries, incredible musicians, and friendships, when you look back at young Teddy who joined Miami Sound Machine, what does it mean that you became part of this musical family and its history?
• 1:00:09
SPEAKER_06: Well, looking back, um I wish I would have known known then what I know now.
• 1:00:16
SPEAKER_06: Um you know, I was not very mature back then.
• 1:00:21
SPEAKER_06: Um I also went through a divorce, you know, during my my years with uh Miami Sound Machine, and um that was tough.
• 1:00:31
SPEAKER_06: Um that really affected me a lot because uh I was actually home not not um I wouldn't say insolvent, but I I was I didn't, you know, I had to sell my house, my first house that I had.
• 1:00:47
SPEAKER_06: Um and I had to go move to St.
• 1:00:49
SPEAKER_06: Petersburg and and move in with a friend of mine, musician, and um and I was doing a um every day I was doing a uh two cruises on a casino boat, and it was called a Sun Cruise.
• 1:01:03
SPEAKER_06: And uh that was how I was able to make ends meet because at that time Gloria wasn't wasn't traveling very much.
• 1:01:10
SPEAKER_06: And then finally I was got you know gradually got back on my feet.
• 1:01:16
SPEAKER_06: And uh finally, you know, she called back, she put the band back together, and uh that was that was exciting and and you know, and I felt, you know, thank God.
• 1:01:27
SPEAKER_06: Of course, yeah, no, of course.
• 1:01:29
SPEAKER_06: Thank God, you know, because uh you know at that point, you know, losing your family, losing your wife, uh it was tough.
• 1:01:38
SPEAKER_06: Um, and Gloria was aware, she was aware.
• 1:01:41
SPEAKER_06: Uh they were both aware that I was going through tough times.
• 1:01:45
SPEAKER_06: I think that almost simultaneously, uh George was also through tough times too.
• 1:01:52
SPEAKER_06: Um you know, um there was there was you know, there was um life, no matter how successful you are, yeah affects every it affects everybody.
• 1:02:04
SPEAKER_06: No matter no matter how famous you are, sometimes life, things that happen in life, you know, can can can uh affect you in in a bad way, you know.
• 1:02:15
SPEAKER_06: Like my accident, my divorce, you know, things like that, you know, um depression, you know, you go through a certain, you know, like when we lost Albin, when we go when we lost George.
• 1:02:28
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, of course.
• 1:02:29
SPEAKER_06: Uh that was that was a hard hit.
• 1:02:31
SPEAKER_06: All of us, you know, we went to the case.
• 1:02:32
SPEAKER_02: I can imagine because that's like you know, this this you guys have created this this family, this brotherhood.
• 1:02:38
SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, so that's that's gotta be tough.
• 1:02:41
SPEAKER_02: But I think that's one of the the beautiful things is that family that you guys have created where you guys can rely on each other, and you know, it's not just about the music, it's about the uh the the camaraderie.
• 1:02:52
SPEAKER_06: We got a lot of trust with within each other, even even if we argued or or everything.
• 1:02:58
SPEAKER_06: And that's each other for a week.
• 1:03:00
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and and it's evident because you know, uh when you guys get on that stage, just the the chemistry that you guys bring, it's it's it seems so natural, so organic.
• 1:03:12
SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, uh, so it's it's beautiful to see how you guys come together, create beautiful music, and that that comes from that brotherhood, I'm sure, you know.
• 1:03:22
SPEAKER_06: You know, I can always see it on Gloria's face.
• 1:03:26
SPEAKER_06: Uh before you know, like when she when we just did this, you know, at rehearsals or putting together stuff, how how confident she looked, um, because she knew that we were gonna get the job done the way she always wanted to have the job done.
• 1:03:44
  SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
• 1:03:45
SPEAKER_06: She didn't have any any worry whatsoever, uh, if you know, because we had a quite an extensive uh amount of songs in the those last shows.
• 1:03:54
  SPEAKER_06: I think we had like close to 26, 25, 26 shows.
• 1:04:00
SPEAKER_06: Which I'm uh you know, every every minute I was praying, oh God, please, you know, I I need to get through.
• 1:04:04
SPEAKER_06: You know, I was oh god, I hope my lip can can hold up.
• 1:04:09
SPEAKER_06: You guys can hold up.
• 1:04:11
SPEAKER_02: You guys were killing it, man.
• 1:04:12
SPEAKER_02: So listen, Teddy, we we could sit here all day and talk to you.
• 1:04:16
SPEAKER_02: And and I hope that you know, um, that you felt like you know, entre familia and that you would be willing to come back one day.
• 1:04:24
SPEAKER_02: Um because we've we've enjoyed having you, but we have reached uh this uh part of our show where we let it loose.
• 1:04:31
SPEAKER_02: So the let it loose segment is your moment to take the floor and share whatever you'd like.
• 1:04:37
SPEAKER_02: It could be a story, a message, something you've always wanted to say, a thank you to the Stephans or the fans, or simply anything that's on your mind.
• 1:04:44
SPEAKER_02: So this is your moment to just let it loose.
• 1:04:47
  SPEAKER_02: Okay, starting now, right?
• 1:04:49
  SPEAKER_02: Starting now.
• 1:04:51
SPEAKER_06: Well, I want to thank you, Carlos and Wes and everybody, uh, Laura, uh, all you guys that are here present for allowing me to um, you know, say what I have said, you know, uh in the interview.
• 1:05:06
  SPEAKER_06: And uh it's it's very meaningful.
• 1:05:09
SPEAKER_06: Um it really today is gonna be a day that I'll that I will remember very with a lot of affection, and uh, you know, that I was able to share with you uh some stories and my feelings of my life uh as a band member of the sound machine and and being uh being a part of something that I never thought I would be uh a part of.
• 1:05:32

• 1:06:19
SPEAKER_06: Or it's the things that I used to do.
• 1:06:20
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
• 1:06:21
SPEAKER_06: But uh, you know, uh especially nowadays, you know, we we need more uh kindness and understanding between each other, uh, regardless of your faith, your ideologies, your political views, etc.
• 1:06:38
SPEAKER_06: We're all we're all uh brothers and sisters in this whole earth, in this whole you know, existence.
• 1:06:45

• 1:06:55
SPEAKER_06: And um from here on out, it's that's what I want to do.
• 1:06:58
