- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, it's time then to go to the phones. And
- 0:04Speaker 1: the question is is pretty simple, carry it's what.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Well, what's the first thing that you bought with your
- 0:10Speaker 2: own money? So it's probably your first job, you know,
- 0:15Speaker 2: have you earned some mow in the lawn or something.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I used to have a paper route and I would
- 0:21Speaker 1: stop at the drug store on my when I was
- 0:25Speaker 1: done with my delivering my papers and go to the
- 0:28Speaker 1: soda fountain and always have a suicide I think what
- 0:33Speaker 1: they called it, which is that they would mix all
- 0:36Speaker 1: of the syrup and and it's a soda, but it
- 0:41Speaker 1: was a bunch of different mixes. Or iron Port. I
- 0:44Speaker 1: kind of liked iron Port. I have an iron Port.
- 0:49Speaker 2: So we were kids.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Daddy Gary used to like to on the weekends go
- 0:54Speaker 3: to the swap meet and he would sometimes make stuff
- 1:00Speaker 3: to take to sell. Sometimes he would go sell like
- 1:03Speaker 3: you know, snow tires or whatever. And he told us
- 1:07Speaker 3: one week if we had some some toys that we
- 1:11Speaker 3: would like to sell that we didn't want anymore, we
- 1:13Speaker 3: could sell it and keep the money.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Oh and that was super fun.
- 1:17Speaker 3: We spread out a little blanket on the asphalt and
- 1:22Speaker 3: displayed our wares and sold some toys. But then at
- 1:26Speaker 3: the swap meet, there was a woman who would make
- 1:29Speaker 3: do you remember when girls would have a baret with
- 1:33Speaker 3: like colorful feathers hanging off of it. Those were the
- 1:38Speaker 3: style at the time, but so that she would make
- 1:42Speaker 3: them there. Because swat meet's not always about selling old stuff,
- 1:45Speaker 3: there were people that would make stuff and sell it.
- 1:47Speaker 3: So I sold some of my toys and I went
- 1:49Speaker 3: and bought one of the Bretts with the.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Feathers to feathers, which probably fell off really soon.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it wasn't It wasn't great.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Let's see you go to Oh there's that Don online one.

- 5:30Speaker 2: Texter says, a speedometer for my bike. Aw, let's see
- 5:37Speaker 2: my first paycheck. I made my sister take me to
- 5:39Speaker 2: Pegasust to buy a CD. I was only fourteen, so
- 5:42Speaker 2: it was a big deal.
- 5:43Speaker 3: We don't want to know what you got.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't leave us hanging like that. I got
- 5:48Speaker 2: a paper out and saved my money and bought an
- 5:51Speaker 2: original Nintendo m oh paper Route. I'm guessing voice to
- 5:55Speaker 2: text is not your friend.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Saved money a Burton Ernie sing along cassette tape. I
- 6:02Speaker 1: love it.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Nancy drew books with my allowance.
- 6:06Speaker 1: That idea of saved money. My grandfather always used to
- 6:09Speaker 1: say to me when he I do jobs for him
- 6:11Speaker 1: and he pay me, he say, he say that money's
- 6:13Speaker 1: gonna burn a hole right in your pocket. I know
- 6:15Speaker 1: it is, and he's not gonna save it at all.
- 6:18Speaker 1: He was right.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Let's see. The first thing I bought with my own
- 6:21Speaker 2: money was a loaf of bread. I ate it on
- 6:23Speaker 2: the car ride home and got sick.

- 6:39Speaker 1: Uh, what what did you the first money you ever
- 6:42Speaker 1: got that you was you could call your own? What
- 6:45Speaker 1: did you buy with that?
- 6:49Speaker 2: Let's go to Chris in Kansas. Chris, are you there?
- 6:54Speaker 9: Yes, I am, Good morning lord, Chris. First thing we
- 6:57Speaker 9: bought my hey, my brother and I uh. In order
- 7:01Speaker 9: to get the Nintendo, we had to save our own money,
- 7:03Speaker 9: the tours and not and the deal was if we
- 7:07Speaker 9: saved one hundred dollars, my mother.
- 7:09Speaker 4: Would pay the sales tax, which she did.
- 7:11Speaker 9: And then my father decided that we cannot have the
- 7:14Speaker 9: Nintendo until he.
- 7:15Speaker 4: Conquered Super Mario Brothers, so that took us another two months.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Tota. Well, there you go, arbitrary. Thank you, Christian.
- 7:24Speaker 2: At least you got it.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Yeah, guys, have a great day.
- 7:28Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Go to Jeremy.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Hi, Jeremy, where are you calling from?
- 7:34Speaker 4: Good morning lord, I'm calling from Northfale Lake.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Okay, what'd you buy?
- 7:40Speaker 4: Well? I know this is going to sound like an
- 7:42Speaker 4: old man walk to school up till both ways kind
- 7:45Speaker 4: of story, but it actually earned two dollars a day
- 7:48Speaker 4: in my family's farm to buy a drum.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Sets a day.
- 7:52Speaker 5: Long?
- 7:53Speaker 3: Did it take you to say, that's a lot of
- 7:55Speaker 3: money to save for two dollars a day?
- 7:56Speaker 5: How long?
- 7:58Speaker 4: The drum set was two hundred dollar.
- 8:00Speaker 8: So.
- 8:02Speaker 4: One hundred dollars?
- 8:03Speaker 1: What what? Kind of farm. What kind of farm work
- 8:06Speaker 1: did you do for that drum set?
- 8:09Speaker 4: I shoveled corn, rolled corn for for cattle fed silence?
- 8:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, well it.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Went into the silence yet.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Yeah? And did you uh? Did you become a proficient drummer? I?
- 8:27Speaker 4: Well that's a I guess a matter of opinion. But
- 8:30Speaker 4: I feel like I've progressed fairly well in a couple
- 8:33Speaker 4: of bands.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Okay, so you did stick with it? You still play?
- 8:36Speaker 1: All right?
- 8:38Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 8:38Speaker 1: Cool?
- 8:39Speaker 4: I would like to. I'm a little too old and
- 8:42Speaker 4: too busy, but you know you hit it in where
- 8:45Speaker 4: you can.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Did Do you still shovel corn?
- 8:49Speaker 10: No?
- 8:49Speaker 4: I've given up on that. The back and shoulders need problems,
- 8:55Speaker 4: the next problems that you get working on a farm
- 8:59Speaker 4: or I meant to on that?
- 9:01Speaker 2: All right?
- 9:01Speaker 1: All right, thanks Jeremy.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Thanks, Let's go to Kara, Hi Kara.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Where are you right now?
- 9:07Speaker 10: My friend?
- 9:08Speaker 4: I'm good.
- 9:08Speaker 11: I'm in Sandy.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Okay, what what do you buy with the first money
- 9:12Speaker 1: you ever earned?
- 9:13Speaker 11: So I have my own and my son because my
- 9:16Speaker 11: son's is hilarious. I saved up my allowance when I
- 9:20Speaker 11: was twelve by a habbage touch doll at the grand
- 9:23Speaker 11: opening of West Sally Smith.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Oh that was a big deal.
- 9:27Speaker 11: Well yeah, we stood outside in line my mom and.
- 9:31Speaker 5: I for hours.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Now you say your son has it too, You want
- 9:34Speaker 1: to put him on?
- 9:35Speaker 11: So yeah, well he's not with me. He saved up
- 9:40Speaker 11: his allowance at ten years old and bought a fresh
- 9:44Speaker 11: tray of seafood and a bottle of Scope.
- 9:49Speaker 1: Fresh a tray of seafood and a.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Bottle of Scope Scope.
- 9:57Speaker 8: He asked me how to cook it.
- 9:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 9:58Speaker 11: I taught him how to cook it ten years old.
- 10:01Speaker 8: I was impressed.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Now it says here soap, and that's what I thought
- 10:04Speaker 1: you said, Scope. I got it Scope, okay, pressure, Yeah.
- 10:10Speaker 2: After seafood, I guess. Okay. There was his life, just
- 10:14Speaker 2: a cool kid.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I don't know anything else about him.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Does he still like seafood?
- 10:20Speaker 11: He loves seafood candy?
- 10:23Speaker 1: Yeah? There you go. All right, thank you?
- 10:25Speaker 2: All right, thanks day. Let's go to Amy. Hello Amy, Hi, Hello.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Hi Amy. What did you buy with your money?
- 10:36Speaker 9: So?
- 10:37Speaker 8: I when I was, you know, babysitting money right, so
- 10:40Speaker 8: pretty early I finally got enough money and my friend
- 10:44Speaker 8: and I got on our bikes and we rode down
- 10:47Speaker 8: to where the harmons in mid bell Is and there
- 10:51Speaker 8: used to be a Peter Piper Pizza I remember, Yeah,
- 10:56Speaker 8: and we would buy an entire large pizza, big picture
- 11:02Speaker 8: of rout beer and get quarters in place by Hunter.
- 11:06Speaker 8: Oh and we felt so that's a good day. It's
- 11:10Speaker 8: a good day.
- 11:11Speaker 11: Mike's back home.
- 11:13Speaker 8: And then my first job where I felt like I
- 11:15Speaker 8: had lots and lots of money, you know, more like
- 11:17Speaker 8: the paycheck I bought my family Christmas that year.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Wonder very nice. Thank you, thank you, Amy, thank you,
- 11:25Speaker 1: thank you. I remember using my own money to buy
- 11:28Speaker 1: hamburgers and stuff at Buds Frost Stop. That made me
- 11:31Speaker 1: feel really adult.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Let's go to is it low.
- 11:37Speaker 5: Leo?
- 11:37Speaker 1: Leo, Hi, Leo Ello. Here it's our dyslexic. So what
- 11:43Speaker 1: what did you buy with your first money? Leo?
- 11:47Speaker 9: So?
- 11:47Speaker 7: Until I was eighteen, my parents made me say pretty
- 11:50Speaker 7: much any significant amount of money in a savings account
- 11:53Speaker 7: for college or a mission. And then when I turned eighteen,
- 11:56Speaker 7: I got my first debit card and I used it
- 11:58Speaker 7: to buy a copy of World on Steam.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Okay, so the mission, the mission went out the window.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Is that what you're telling us?
- 12:08Speaker 7: Yeah, for unbrilliated reasons went out the window. A couple
- 12:10Speaker 7: of years before.
- 12:11Speaker 1: That, I see, all right, thank you. I think you've
- 12:15Speaker 1: told us quite enough. Yes, thanks Leo, Thanks Leah. Jennifer
- 12:20Speaker 1: is here, Hello, Jennifer, Jennifer. Where where are you calling from? Jennifer? O?
- 12:25Speaker 9: Jen?
- 12:26Speaker 1: Okay? And what did you buy with the first money
- 12:28Speaker 1: you ever earned?
- 12:30Speaker 4: Okay?
- 12:31Speaker 10: So I was fifteen and I worked at thirty one Flavors.
- 12:35Speaker 10: And this is a really girly answer, but I bought
- 12:38Speaker 10: makeup and clothes at Mervins.
- 12:42Speaker 1: How lovely? Got yourself all dulled up?
- 12:47Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 12:47Speaker 8: Yeah it was.
- 12:48Speaker 10: It was a late eighties, so you know you got
- 12:51Speaker 10: the rebox going with the zippers.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I bet you were hot stuff, weren't you. Yeah?
- 13:02Speaker 1: All right, thanks Jennifer.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Guys, Hello, I'm Robert Reid, and I want to tell
- 13:09Speaker 2: you about a store opening up in your area.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Soon called.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Clothes. I don't remember that, fine quality clothes for the
- 13:16Speaker 2: entire family.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I don't remember that. Oh yeah, hey, hi, Scott, how
- 13:23Speaker 1: are you good? What did you buy with your first
- 13:25Speaker 1: money that you earned?
- 13:28Speaker 5: I bought two things. I bought a Mad magazine and
- 13:32Speaker 5: I bought an Est Model Rocket. Yes, the cargo chamber
- 13:36Speaker 5: you could put a graphopper in.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, I thought launch it into space.
- 13:44Speaker 8: Yeah, and it lived.
- 13:47Speaker 2: See my rocket was the Space Shuttle. So when the
- 13:50Speaker 2: when the when the rocket fired and the parachute would
- 13:54Speaker 2: come out, it would it would jostle the Space Shuttle
- 13:57Speaker 2: loose off of the main rocket, and then the shuttle
- 14:00Speaker 2: would glide down. Did it work? It fell? It mostly fell,
- 14:03Speaker 2: but you put the grasshopper in the shuttle.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Well. My only experience with model rocket we shot shot
- 14:10Speaker 1: it off. This was just a few years ago. I
- 14:11Speaker 1: was with my kids. We went to a park. We
- 14:14Speaker 1: shot this rocket off, and you know, it was supposed
- 14:15Speaker 1: to parachute comunt and it was supposed to float back
- 14:18Speaker 1: to Earth. It just it just disappeared. It went so high.
- 14:24Speaker 1: We never we never found it. So the I guess
- 14:27Speaker 1: the shoote didn't deploy.
- 14:29Speaker 2: The shooting deploy feature didn't work. Yeah, and the rocket
- 14:32Speaker 2: just just kept going.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Yeah, and I landed. Some person jarred somewhere. Probably all right,
- 14:38Speaker 1: Thank you, thanks Scott.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Let's see, let's see, uh, I used to do odd
- 14:44Speaker 2: jobs in the neighborhood when I was eight, probably brought
- 14:47Speaker 2: candy or soda. Brought an Xbox three sixty with Halo
- 14:51Speaker 2: three saved up for two summers Boeing lawns.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Wow. Wow, all you people who saved your money. I
- 14:58Speaker 1: never saved money. I get it and spend it.
- 15:01Speaker 2: I babysat and bought roller skates. First thing I remember
- 15:05Speaker 2: buying with my own money was the zebra Head Playmate
- 15:07Speaker 2: of the Year CD.
- 15:10Speaker 3: First notable purchase was one of those fancy watches with
- 15:13Speaker 3: the calculator on it.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I'll carry you have to go to line one. May
- 15:17Speaker 1: is here, Hi, May, Where are you calling from?
- 15:21Speaker 11: Sugar House?
- 15:23Speaker 1: Okay? What did you buy with your first money?
- 15:28Speaker 8: My mom took me down to the tape store and
- 15:31Speaker 8: Bountiful and I got the Monkey's Greatest Hit on tape?
- 15:34Speaker 1: Oh a cassette?
- 15:38Speaker 2: Oh yeah, we got it right over here on buyingy No.
- 15:40Speaker 8: One of the greatest albums it is.
- 15:42Speaker 1: It's very good you. You don't still have that cassette,
- 15:46Speaker 1: do you?
- 15:47Speaker 8: I wish where would I play it if I had it? Yeah?
- 15:50Speaker 1: Well, you'd have to buy a cassette.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Those are hard to find.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Yeah no, not really.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Go to a pawn shop. I bet they got them.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I bet if you look online you could find one instantly.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Thank you, May.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Thanks. Let's see a lot of people texting in let's
- 16:07Speaker 2: let's take this to our social media so you can
- 16:10Speaker 2: answer there. Oh real quickly. Here, I'll give you my answer.
- 16:15Speaker 2: It was probably nine. I had my paper route money
- 16:19Speaker 2: and I saw an advertisement for a record on TV
- 16:24Speaker 2: and it was all the greatest hits of that year,
- 16:27Speaker 2: and I thought, that's it. That's a great bargain because
- 16:29Speaker 2: these are all the hits of that year from k
- 16:32Speaker 2: Tel Records, And so I sent for it and and
- 16:37Speaker 2: I got it, and the songs were like imitations of
- 16:43Speaker 2: the hits, and that was you know, when you had
- 16:46Speaker 2: to you had to listen very clear, so closely, all
- 16:49Speaker 2: the original hits with the original stars. You didn't order
- 16:53Speaker 2: the record unless they said that because you were getting
- 16:57Speaker 2: remakes from some sort of houseband k tell higher. So
- 17:01Speaker 2: you got crap is what you got.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Crape. It was interesting sitting in that hot pot restaurant
- 17:05Speaker 1: last night, all popular songs of the day but not
- 17:10Speaker 1: sung by the art or the original artists. Yeah.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it's cheaper that way, I guess.
- 17:16Speaker 1: I guess that's why they do it anyway.
