- 1:59Speaker 1: and radio of all genres, including programs like The Shadow
- 2:05Speaker 1: and Superman, were reperformed in Australia. In fact, for many
- 2:10Speaker 1: years Australia had a ban on directly importing foreign produced
- 2:16Speaker 1: entertainment into Australia for fear it would destroy the local
- 2:21Speaker 1: entertainment industry. The actor tapped to play Ellery Queen was
- 2:25Speaker 1: actually one of Australia's finest Charles bud Tingwell. Kingwell was
- 2:32Speaker 1: in the early stage of his career at this point.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Less than two years later he would head to England
- 2:38Speaker 1: and spend nearly two decades there doing a variety of work,
- 2:42Speaker 1: including voice work on Jerry Anderson's series The Thunderbirds, before
- 2:48Speaker 1: returning to Australia in nineteen seventy three, and his distinguished
- 2:53Speaker 1: acting career earned him the Order of Australia. He was
- 2:59Speaker 1: a point You're a member to that and he was
- 3:02Speaker 1: also inducted into the Australian Film Walk of Fame. So
- 3:09Speaker 1: he was a very noted Australian actor, though not quite
- 3:13Speaker 1: at this point in his career. The original airdate on
- 3:16Speaker 1: this episode of the Adventures of Ellery Queen is November nineteenth,
- 3:21Speaker 1: nineteen fifty four, and the title of this program is
- 3:25Speaker 1: Nicky Porter Suspect.

- 16:34Speaker 3: suit you were wearing this morning. All that to one
- 16:40Speaker 3: thousand dollar bill, one of the missing bills from Buffle's hall.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Where did you get a lettery? Oh, don't act the
- 16:47Speaker 3: inspector with me, Dad. I found it in the pocket
- 16:49Speaker 3: of Nicky's fur coat, along with Buffle's gun. I didn't
- 16:51Speaker 3: even tell Mickey about it. I don't like you said.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Bubble's pails searched you, they did, but I palmed the bill,
- 16:56Speaker 3: and after they got through fristing me, I simply put
- 16:58Speaker 3: the bill in my pocket. It all adds on. I

- 18:41Speaker 5: No talk? Uh huh.
- 18:44Speaker 4: In here?

- 18:50Speaker 3: Hi? Yes, sir?
- 18:51Speaker 7: All right, they've handled me like the pizza china. Okay, oh, ellery,
- 18:55Speaker 7: I'm so.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Glad to hold it. So here she is clean them
- 18:59Speaker 4: in one chuck. Now where did she hide the dough?
- 19:03Speaker 3: She didn't?
- 19:04Speaker 7: What are you talking about?
- 19:06Speaker 3: I was able to trace your movement, Nikki. You carried
- 19:09Speaker 3: your suitcase right from the train to a station cab.
- 19:13Speaker 3: You spoke to no one. No one came near you.
- 19:15Speaker 3: He gave the cab driver your home address. He drove
- 19:18Speaker 3: you right there. You got out, and your landlady saw
- 19:20Speaker 3: you come in and go to your room. He didn't
- 19:22Speaker 3: drop anything, He didn't leave anything in the cab. The
- 19:26Speaker 3: bulk of that stolen money wasn't found in your room
- 19:28Speaker 3: because you never brought it there. You never took it from.
- 19:32Speaker 5: The train, Nikki, someone else did, someone else.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Last, next thing we know, you'll be telling her she
- 19:40Speaker 3: didn't bop off her any Buffal. She didn't. I didn't tell, oh, Nikki,
- 19:48Speaker 3: I just saw the autopsy report.
- 19:50Speaker 7: I didn't.
- 19:52Speaker 3: At the time of the shots, you were on the
- 19:53Speaker 3: floor and Buffal was coming at you, leaning over you.
- 19:56Speaker 3: The autopsy report shows that all six bullets struck Buffal's
- 20:00Speaker 3: head at the top and at the back. Only someone
- 20:04Speaker 3: higher than Buffle could have fired those shots.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Someone else that sneaked into the compartment.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Yes, rider, now it's perfectly clear, isn't it. You were
- 20:12Speaker 3: all in on that Chicago robbery with Buffalo. You all
- 20:15Speaker 3: came in on the same train, Buffle carrying the money.
- 20:18Speaker 3: At the last moment Buffal decided to double cross the
- 20:20Speaker 3: rest dog you. He got into Nicky's compartment and tried
- 20:23Speaker 3: to get her to carry the money off the train
- 20:24Speaker 3: for him so he could recover her suitcase later and
- 20:28Speaker 3: have the whole haul for himself.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Ernie double cross.
- 20:31Speaker 3: To us, Yes, rider, What's more, one of you was
- 20:34Speaker 3: afraid of just that and followed Buffal and stood outside
- 20:38Speaker 3: Nicki's compartment and heard the whole thing. That one ended
- 20:42Speaker 3: the compartment, shot Buffal with his own gun, frame Niki
- 20:45Speaker 3: for the murder, and walked off the train carrying the money,
- 20:47Speaker 3: saying nothing for the other two of them. Not only
- 20:51Speaker 3: was Buffalo double crosser, one of you three is a
- 20:54Speaker 3: double crosser too.
- 20:56Speaker 5: Where's that two hundred and fifty four grand reading?
- 21:00Speaker 4: I didn't take it?
- 21:01Speaker 5: Jupe?
- 21:02Speaker 4: Or why would not kill Ernie? Not Ernie?
- 21:05Speaker 3: Frank, don't put the finger on me, Jube, you got
- 21:09Speaker 3: nothing on me. Maybe you did it yourself. I didn't
- 21:13Speaker 3: swear on that bank job to get cheated out of mind.
- 21:17Speaker 3: I'll put the finger on the one who killed Buffalo
- 21:19Speaker 3: today and hid that money. If the other two of
- 21:22Speaker 3: you promised to let Nikki Porter and me walk out
- 21:24Speaker 3: of here, unharmed when I've done so.
- 21:27Speaker 5: Sure, okay, promise.
- 21:31Speaker 3: No, No, that's too easy. Suppose you all put your
- 21:36Speaker 3: guns on the table first. There's a guarantee you of
- 21:38Speaker 3: good faith. Then I've got as good a chance as
- 21:41Speaker 3: any of you to grab just in case you were
- 21:44Speaker 3: you know, forget your promise.
- 21:48Speaker 4: Here is mine.
- 21:52Speaker 5: Joop. Okay, come on, Frank, I got a clear conscience.
- 22:06Speaker 4: One of those is a charkard desire. Okay, Queen talk
- 22:14Speaker 4: who killed Ernie?
- 22:26Speaker 3: And there, ladies and gentlemen, you have the mystery? NICKI,
- 22:28Speaker 3: would you introduce our guest armchair detect No, Sir, Nikki
- 22:31Speaker 3: is still a little shaky, so I'm going to help
- 22:33Speaker 3: out while NICKI rest That is that the real reason
- 22:36Speaker 3: you want to be in on this interview? Why?
- 22:37Speaker 5: Of course, Elery.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Well, anyway, it's a very great pleasure to introduce our
- 22:42Speaker 3: guest for the night, that world famous personality currently appearing
- 22:46Speaker 3: at the Palladium Theater in Sydney, missus Gypsy Rose Lee.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Welcome to the show, Miss Lee.
- 22:51Speaker 5: Well, thank you Ellerie, and thank you Inspector.
- 22:56Speaker 13: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Of course, Ellary, you're much
- 22:59Speaker 13: more fortunate than I am. You have your wonderful father
- 23:03Speaker 13: to help you solve your solutions.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Yes, miss Lee, I am. I'm very fortunate. However, before
- 23:09Speaker 3: we proceed with your solution to the mystery, we'd all
- 23:11Speaker 3: like to meet you personally. Yes, indeed, you've certainly been
- 23:15Speaker 3: a smashhit at the Sydney Palladium. Are you visiting any
- 23:17Speaker 3: other Australian cities, Miss Lee? Oh?
- 23:19Speaker 13: I wish I were, but I'm going to have to
- 23:21Speaker 13: get on back home, I'm afraid. Although we'd like to
- 23:24Speaker 13: play Adelaide and Melbourn and particularly per huh, I'd love
- 23:28Speaker 13: to see Perth.
- 23:28Speaker 5: People who told me it's so beautiful.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Well then we do, Miss Lee.
- 23:32Speaker 5: How do you like the audience is here?
- 23:34Speaker 4: Oh?
- 23:35Speaker 13: I think they're just simply wonderful.
- 23:36Speaker 5: I think you're pretty cute too, you know that.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Yeah, well it's miss Lee. Of course you're a well
- 23:43Speaker 3: known mystery right yourself too, aren't you. I mean I've
- 23:46Speaker 3: read your mysteries Their Mother finds the Body and the
- 23:49Speaker 3: strip Teas Murder a.
- 23:51Speaker 13: Wonderful Well, thank you, honey. Actually, you know at home
- 23:55Speaker 13: the Stripteas Murders wasn't called that at all. It was
- 23:57Speaker 13: called the g String murders. They figured that in Australia
- 24:01Speaker 13: they wouldn't know what a g string is, so they'd
- 24:03Speaker 13: probably think it was something to do with the violine.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Well, yeah, you're quietus. I think there's marvelous miss And
- 24:13Speaker 3: do you have any particular hobbies outside the theater?
- 24:16Speaker 5: And well, yes I have. What is your favorite hobby?
- 24:22Speaker 13: Well I could sort of match it maybe, and we
- 24:24Speaker 13: could compare hobbies, Well, wherever you like. I like to
- 24:29Speaker 13: collect stamps.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, for latally it is one of my hobbies.
- 24:34Speaker 3: In fact, I'm thinking of taking it up full time
- 24:36Speaker 3: on't so. Yeah. Sure now, thank you very much, miss Lee.
- 24:44Speaker 3: But I think it's about time we got to our problem.
- 24:46Speaker 3: I'll do it. I'll do it now, Miss Lee.
- 24:50Speaker 5: Who killed Buffalo and hid the money?
- 24:53Speaker 13: Oh dear, I'm not really sure, you know, but I
- 24:56Speaker 13: have a very sneaky hunch that Rita.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Might have on it, just on general principles.
- 25:03Speaker 13: That is, I don't have any evidence against her, not
- 25:05Speaker 13: even circumstantial evidence, but I don't like her.
- 25:09Speaker 5: Personally, I see.
- 25:10Speaker 13: And of course I do think that whoever got rid
- 25:12Speaker 13: of buffal was doing an awfully good deed.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Anyway, Yes, well, thank you, thank you, miss Lee, and
- 25:18Speaker 3: in just a moment we'll learn if your solution is
- 25:20Speaker 3: the correct one. I'm on your side, miss Lee. If
- 25:23Speaker 3: there's anything I can do, you can be sure. Reader,
- 25:34Speaker 3: how much money was in that hall two hundred and
- 25:36Speaker 3: fifty eight grand, two hundred and fifty eight thousand dollars.
- 25:41Speaker 3: But Buffle's killer left some of that money to frame
- 25:43Speaker 3: Nikki Potter, so he didn't get away with the whole amount. Yep,
- 25:48Speaker 3: how much did the killer actually get away with? I
- 25:50Speaker 3: just said a mended though. Two hundred and fifty four grand,
- 25:54Speaker 3: two hundred and fifty four thousands. Thank Is that right?
- 25:58Speaker 5: Huh ah?
- 26:00Speaker 3: It ought to be two fifty five. The papers that
- 26:03Speaker 3: I said three one thousand bucks goes will have done
- 26:05Speaker 3: a Florida train. The papers were wrong, Frank, because the
- 26:08Speaker 3: papers didn't know that the killer left an additional one
- 26:10Speaker 3: thousand dollars bill in Nikki Porter's coat pocket where I
- 26:13Speaker 3: found it. So that does make four and four from
- 26:16Speaker 3: two fifty eight is two fifty four, As Duke correctly stated, Hey, Frank,
- 26:21Speaker 3: he sees you for the fandly you don't because only
- 26:24Speaker 3: three people in the universe know that the exact amount
- 26:26Speaker 3: of the killer's possesion is two hundred and fifty four
- 26:28Speaker 3: thousand dollars. Juke, I'm one of them. My father inspected
- 26:31Speaker 3: Queen's number two and he didn't know the thirty seconds
- 26:34Speaker 3: before Frank's phone called him tonight. And Buffalo's killer is
- 26:37Speaker 3: the third. And how did you know, Juke? It's Damieyes, Nikki,
- 26:46Speaker 3: she spelled it today. Impossible to Nikki yourself didn't know.
- 26:49Speaker 3: I never told her. No, Duke, There's only one way
- 26:52Speaker 3: you could have known, and that's if you planted that
- 26:55Speaker 3: bill in Nicky's pocket.
- 26:57Speaker 15: Goolo, did you double cross let on the side of the
- 27:01Speaker 15: room money, I'm gonna take you.
- 27:04Speaker 3: God, I'm gonna get that the one. I'm gonna scram
- 27:05Speaker 3: out of here. But when it comes back to me
- 27:08Speaker 3: gets don't move you God get him. I'm letting you.
- 27:15Speaker 3: When he said la, he's gonna get the door and
- 27:17Speaker 3: scram out of here, that means he's hitting in miss house. Man,
- 27:21Speaker 3: search the house. Take these two cuties in two Nicky, Nikky.
- 27:29Speaker 3: I can't tell you how I feel thinking all day
- 27:33Speaker 3: to day that you, Oh, Nikki, will you forgive me?
- 27:38Speaker 7: Why Ellerie? It's the inspector. When did he get here.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Good grief, that us another attack of amnesia or nonsense.
- 27:47Speaker 15: Son, She's just out on her feet. Come on, honey,
- 27:51Speaker 15: we'll take you home. Grab her under the other easy doesn't.
- 28:04Speaker 15: And there, ladies and gentlemen, you have the solution to
- 28:06Speaker 15: our mystery. Thanks again, Gypsy rose Lee, and thanks to
- 28:10Speaker 15: the directors of the Palladium Theater, Sydney who made it
- 28:12Speaker 15: possible for you to come along and be our guest
- 28:14Speaker 15: armchair detective this evening.
- 28:16Speaker 3: NICKI never mind, Nikki, you rest here, Yes, miss Lee.
- 28:20Speaker 3: I'd also like you to accept this subscription to The
- 28:23Speaker 3: Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, which I'll send to wherever you
- 28:26Speaker 3: may be.
- 28:26Speaker 13: Oh, thank you, Inspector. Well, good night Ellie, Good night listeners.
- 28:32Speaker 13: Come on, sweetie, let's just go play with our stamps.
- 28:36Speaker 3: Well, thank you, Gypsy rose Lee, and now all you
- 28:38Speaker 3: home armchair detectives were Miss Lee man, Okay, good night
- 28:44Speaker 3: everyone until next week.
- 28:45Speaker 2: The Adventures of Enery Queen is a great Skips and
- 28:48Speaker 2: radio production directed by John sol.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Welcome back Well. The episode title was a bit of
- 29:12Speaker 1: a misnomer, though it was taken from the American series,
- 29:17Speaker 1: But Nikki's biggest concern in this episode wasn't so much
- 29:20Speaker 1: being a suspect as it was being a hostage, and
- 29:25Speaker 1: the final clue was a bit disappointing, and you can
- 29:29Speaker 1: hardly blame Gypsy rose Lee for getting it wrong because
- 29:34Speaker 1: the key clue was a verbal slip that Ellery obtained
- 29:38Speaker 1: after the challenge to the listeners, So as they might
- 29:41Speaker 1: have said in Australia and certainly other parts of the
- 29:45Speaker 1: English speaking world, that was hardly cricket. The acting was good, though,
- 29:50Speaker 1: I have to say I think Tingwell may have had
- 29:53Speaker 1: the deepest voice of any Ellery Queen actor we've heard
- 29:57Speaker 1: at any rate. I hope you've enjoyed this diversion into
- 30:02Speaker 1: Australia and we will return next Tuesday, and of course
- 30:08Speaker 1: next Monday it's Michael Shane. In the meantime, send your
