- 0:06(Transcribed by TurboScribe.ai. Go Unlimited to remove this message.) Hi, I'm Chris.
- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14As a bonus episode to our wholehearted series,
- 0:17I interviewed Abbott Dan Nobles.
- 0:20So you'll hear a little bit of his
- 0:21story of how he became a monk and
- 0:24his journey with healing prayer.
- 0:26And I think his reflections on contemplative prayer
- 0:28are really relevant to us thinking about how
- 0:31God works healing in our lives.
- 0:33I enjoyed this conversation.
- 0:38Well, it's so good to be on the
- 0:40call with you.
- 0:42And would you mind introducing yourself, Abbott Dan,
- 0:44to our listeners?
- 0:46Sure, I'm Abbott Dan Nobles.
- 0:48I'm the Abbott of the Christ Mission Anglican
- 0:50Benedictines, which is a dispersed order of Benedictines
- 0:55brothers and sisters from not only Anglican, but
- 0:59from a wide varied traditions of the historic
- 1:03church.
- 1:04So, yes, wonderful.
- 1:07And you just use the word dispersed, which
- 1:10is interesting.
- 1:11I know, at least for me, when I
- 1:14first learned about monastic orders, I always imagine
- 1:18people in a literal monastery hold up somewhere.
- 1:22So what is what does it mean that
- 1:23you lead a dispersed order?
- 1:25Well, it's a grand experiment.
- 1:28I often say that that our vows are
- 1:31Benedictine.
- 1:31We often live like Franciscans because we live
- 1:35in various communities across the United States and
- 1:38literally around the world.
- 1:40We have oblates in Hungary.
- 1:44We have brothers in Africa.
- 1:46We have brothers in England and Europe and
- 1:49Germany.
- 1:50So yes, and it's brothers and sisters.
- 1:54We have a priors for sisters.
- 1:56And right now, I am with the brothers,
- 2:02but I'm getting ready to establish a prior
- 2:05for the brothers.
- 2:06And then we would also have a prior
- 2:08for oblates and oblates or those who may
- 2:11not desire to take full vows, may not
- 2:14desire to embrace the entire little rule of
- 2:18Saint Benedict.
- 2:19But there's some aspect of Benedictine spirituality that
- 2:24they want to draw closer to God through
- 2:28that avenue.
- 2:30And so they'll come in for a season
- 2:32or for a lifetime and they will walk
- 2:35with us and we walk with them in
- 2:38that aspect of their specific Benedictine spirituality.
- 2:43So it sounds like there's a lot of
- 2:46different ways that people participate.
- 2:48Obviously, you're the abbot.
- 2:49So you have leadership responsibility for the whole
- 2:52community.
- 2:53Then you have some other leaders like the
- 2:54prioress and hopefully a prior at some point
- 2:57who kind of have, would you call that
- 3:00like pastoral leadership for the brothers and sisters?
- 3:03Yes, that's exactly what it is.
- 3:06It's sort of extension of my pastoral arm
- 3:09to care for the sisters, to pastorally care
- 3:12for the brothers in the same way with
- 3:15the oblates.
- 3:15So you'd have someone who who care for
- 3:17their needs.
- 3:19They don't, they're not, it's not a hierarchical
- 3:21situation, but it's a pastoral care.
- 3:26And I serve as the spiritual leader for
- 3:30the community.
- 3:33And with the opportunity for oblates, it sounds
- 3:36like it's not all or nothing.
- 3:37It's not like you have to commit to
- 3:39a lifetime under the rule of Saint Benedict
- 3:41or do nothing.
- 3:42There's an option to kind of test the
- 3:46water, so to speak.
- 3:47Well, exactly.
- 3:49And it also, when I first became the
- 3:52abbot, we did not have an oblation.
- 3:54It was either, it was vocational.
- 3:56So you either took vows or you didn't.
- 3:59But we had so many people who see
- 4:02the benefit of contemplative prayer, contemplative life.
- 4:09And they may want to explore an aspect
- 4:12of them.
- 4:14So we established like many physical monasteries have
- 4:17oblates.
- 4:18I began my Benedictine journey as an oblate.
- 4:22So we have many physical monasteries that would
- 4:26have such an arm.
- 4:30And it's rich for us because we have
- 4:33people who come in and want to share
- 4:35an aspect of life with us.
- 4:37It helps us to really hone in on
- 4:40that particular area of our journey.
- 4:44And while we're also as vocational, we're trying
- 4:48to embrace the entirety of the rule of
- 4:51Saint Benedict.
- 4:52Yeah.
- 4:54Well, that sounds like you've managed to open
- 4:57up some ways for other people to participate
- 4:59in a really rich way.
- 5:01I'm kind of curious of when when I
- 5:03was reading about Christ Mission, I saw that
- 5:06you served in the army for many years.
- 5:09So thank you for your service.
- 5:11Thank you.
- 5:13I was blessed.
- 5:14I'm curious how you kind of made the
- 5:16transition from a military life to a monastic
- 5:18life.
- 5:20You know, God has his ways to work
- 5:22with us.
- 5:24Yes, I drew, it goes way back to
- 5:30my running from my call of ministry throughout
- 5:35my teen years and then throughout my military
- 5:39career.
- 5:40But as I came to an end of
- 5:42my military career, the call to ministry became
- 5:46louder and louder.
- 5:47Now in calling, I look at the Greek
- 5:51word kaleo as call.
- 5:54And that word gives you an idea that
- 5:58calling is that we surrender and we empty
- 6:03ourselves of our desires and our plans and
- 6:08we receive and we accept the desires and
- 6:11the plans of the one who's called us.
- 6:15So as I left the military, that was
- 6:18sort of my heart list.
- 6:19I really wanted to just empty myself of
- 6:22myself and serve.
- 6:27Of course, I'm older as I'm doing that.
- 6:29So when I'm in seminary, I'm in with
- 6:31with a lot of young young people and
- 6:34and as I was doing that, I needed
- 6:37to have community sort of my age that
- 6:41may sound strange, but it was I was
- 6:43looking for someone, you know, a little longer
- 6:45in the tooth.
- 6:47Sure, and I love my classmates, but I
- 6:51needed somebody that I could talk with.
- 6:52So there was in Gastonia, North Carolina, Belmont
- 6:57Abbey.
- 6:59And I started going to Belmont Abbey for
- 7:01retreats and the brothers there just just took
- 7:06me in and embraced me.
- 7:09And so I would continue on and that's
- 7:11where I realized that oh, I could be
- 7:15an oblate here.
- 7:17I could I could be a gift an
- 7:19oblate gift and and and receive a gift
- 7:23of their fellowship and that got me into
- 7:26this this journey.
- 7:28And then after seminary and after I was
- 7:31ordained into the Anglican Communion, I there I
- 7:35went on a convocation.
- 7:40I was talking to a to a fellow
- 7:42priest and said, you know, I need to
- 7:44escape for a little bit.
- 7:46I'm going to leave here and go and
- 7:50pray tears.
- 7:52And he looked at me strangely and he
- 7:54says tears.
- 7:55I said, yeah, that's you know, an hour
- 7:58of prayer.
- 7:58He said, well, I know he said, but
- 8:00that's a Benedictine tradition.
- 8:01Yeah, I'm an oblate in the Benedictine.
- 8:05He said, why aren't you vowed?
- 8:07I said, well, I'm an Anglican.
- 8:09Yeah, and and he said, well, you know,
- 8:14we we have Benedictine order.
- 8:17That's really well, I'm also married and he
- 8:21said, well, our our our vows we can
- 8:24be married.
- 8:26I said, well, tell me more about this.
- 8:28So, yeah, yeah, and and it was Abbott.
- 8:32Patrick Milan was the the Abbott and so
- 8:35I went into the order and at those
- 8:40days, it was called Anglican Communion Benedictines.
- 8:43And so I went into the order with
- 8:45with vows.
- 8:48He he made me the it's called a
- 8:52novice master.
- 8:53You're sort of the you're sort of the
- 8:55teacher of those who have just just taken
- 8:59vows.
- 9:01And so I started putting together structure there
- 9:04and through time Abbott Patrick, he became ill
- 9:09and he retired and he died shortly after
- 9:15me and the community elected me to be
- 9:18the Abbott.
- 9:19I've done that ever since so that's my
- 9:22thumbnail my journey.
- 9:24Yeah, yeah, that's that's really beautiful how you
- 9:27you kind of came into it just out
- 9:29of that desire.
- 9:31And then you realize that it kind of
- 9:32dovetailed with your own priestly and pastoral vocation
- 9:35eventually.
- 9:36Yes.
- 9:37Yeah, that's there's something about, you know, we
- 9:40talk about prayer warriors and the need for
- 9:43prayer warriors and that is true.
- 9:46There's also something about contemplative prayer that is
- 9:52so healing and and there's a rhythm of
- 9:57prayer.
- 9:58And if you're familiar with Lectio Divina that
- 10:02rhythm of prayer of of just hearing of
- 10:05of receiving internalizing responding and then resting in
- 10:12in the word.
- 10:14And so that's from my military background and
- 10:20some of the wounds that I suffered, you
- 10:22know, emotional wounds.
- 10:24I found great healing through that process and
- 10:28between that and then I don't know if
- 10:31you're familiar with but I'm also a youtuber.
- 10:35Yes.
- 10:36Yeah, I've seen some of the videos.
- 10:38Yeah.
- 10:38So wandering monk is my my trail name
- 10:42every hiker trail hiker you get a name
- 10:45and so yeah, my name started out being
- 10:48monk from my vocation.
- 10:52Yeah, and but the people that were with
- 10:55me, they said, yeah, but you're you don't
- 10:57stay you don't stay put, you don't stay
- 10:59in a monastery.
- 11:00You're you're always wandering.
- 11:02You're a wandering monk and so that name
- 11:05stuck and but between the trail and which
- 11:10is another very soulful experience and contemplative prayer.
- 11:16I found great healing and in that I
- 11:23wanted to share with others give a give
- 11:26a place a space for others whether they
- 11:29desire to be vocational or as we talked
- 11:31about earlier being an oblique.
- 11:34There's great benefit to contemplative prayer.
- 11:40I love how you're describing it not just
- 11:41in terms of what clerical Christians or monks
- 11:45were doing but also people who were doing
- 11:47common daily labor that the rhythm of prayer
- 11:50interlaced their lives as well for for me.
- 11:55That's something that I found really rich about
- 11:57the Benedictine tradition and I was wondering if
- 12:00you could speak to that as well.
- 12:01Let's say there's someone listening to this or
- 12:03reading this who doesn't know anything about the
- 12:07Benedictine tradition.
- 12:08They're just a normal Christian with a day
- 12:10job.
- 12:10How can this tradition inform or help them
- 12:14as they live their life?
- 12:17Well, I think for one thing it continues
- 12:19to call us back to our center of
- 12:21gravity.
- 12:22So if you're looking at the at the
- 12:24daily office, if you're looking at what we
- 12:27call the liturgy the hours of the rhythm
- 12:31of prayers as someone new comes into the
- 12:34order because we all have all of us
- 12:37in this order is dispersed order.
- 12:40We have day jobs.
- 12:41So as they come in, they're not accustomed
- 12:46to stopping for seven prayers a day.
- 12:49So what I encourage them to do is
- 12:52just if they do nothing more than take
- 12:54their phone and they put seven at the
- 12:57times of the offices, just a reminder and
- 13:01if they do nothing more than pause for
- 13:04the inventory, there is great benefit to just
- 13:09stopping and saying, oh God, come to my
- 13:13system.
- 13:15Oh God, make haste to help me and
- 13:18then go on with life.
- 13:19But you're pausing to come back to that
- 13:22center of gravity for us all that we
- 13:25need him to come to assist us.
- 13:28We need him to make haste to help
- 13:31us and then we can move on.
- 13:35Yeah, it strikes me as you describe that
- 13:39experience hiking that it doesn't require something extreme
- 13:45or something impressive.
- 13:48It just requires an openness to God showing
- 13:50up.
- 13:52God can show up on a hike.
- 13:54God can show up, you know, while we're
- 13:56checking our email, God can show up while
- 13:58we're doing the dishes.
- 14:01And those are all things that even the
- 14:04Vow members of your community are doing because
- 14:06they have day jobs and some of them
- 14:07like you have family responsibilities as well.
- 14:11So it's not about not having those everyday
- 14:14activities.
- 14:14It's about a committed way of welcoming God's
- 14:17presence in them.
- 14:19And that's true regardless of whether we're in
- 14:22monastery or whether we're dispersed because the monk
- 14:27in the monastery is doing the same thing.
- 14:29They have their prayers, they go work, they
- 14:35have prayers, they have a period of study,
- 14:38they have prayers, they have chores to do.
- 14:42And I have young brothers and sisters will
- 14:47say, you know, it would be so much
- 14:49easier in the monastery.
- 14:52Don't look at it quite that way.
- 14:55Parts of it might be.
- 14:59But, you know, when you're even godly monks
- 15:05living in the monastery together, probably have some
- 15:09personality conflicts.
- 15:13It's going to happen.
- 15:16And so there's things that we work through
- 15:18regardless of whether we're cloistered or whether we're
- 15:23dispersed.
- 15:25And rather than looking at someone else, the
- 15:28best thing to do is just look at
- 15:30your situation where you're at because that's where
- 15:33God wants to meet you.
- 15:35Yeah, and it really does.
- 15:36Everything gets back to that.
- 15:39Why do we do anything?
- 15:43We do it because God wants to have
- 15:46a relationship.
- 15:48So if we look to see where is
- 15:50he working, what's he doing?
- 15:54And we pray for eyes to be able
- 15:56to see it and ears to hear his
- 15:57voice.
- 15:58If we do that and join him where
- 16:03he's at, there's relationship rather than I'm praying
- 16:09for him to bless my plans.
- 16:12God has his plans.
- 16:14God is God.
- 16:16I'm not.
- 16:18He's not a genie that I can rub
- 16:19the bottle.
- 16:22He's God.
- 16:23So my plans are nothing.
- 16:26His plans are perfect.
- 16:29If I can trust him, I can I
- 16:31can have that blessing of relationship with him.
- 16:35That's cruciform life.
- 16:39I'm getting close to the end of my
- 16:40questions here for people who may be curious,
- 16:44maybe listening to this reading this and they
- 16:47want to learn more.
- 16:48I know you offer some digital resources.
- 16:49What's a good next step for somebody to
- 16:52connect with the Ministry of Christ Mission?
- 16:54Probably the best place would be to go
- 16:56to our home page www.Christmission.us. And
- 17:03in there, there's all kinds of links.
- 17:06If you hover over a picture, that picture
- 17:10may flip and there might be something hidden
- 17:12behind it and there will be some information
- 17:15there and there will be a link to
- 17:17another page and it will continue to drive
- 17:19you down.
- 17:21And it's sort of my way of obeying
- 17:25Saint Benedict in the rule.
- 17:27He talks about if someone wants to come,
- 17:30you need to make it not too easy
- 17:32to get in.
- 17:33Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:35So when you get there, explore it.
- 17:38It's just part of it.
- 17:39You have to sort of intentionally challenging website
- 17:42design for the purpose of spiritual formation.
- 17:44This is amazing, Abedneh.
- 17:45I've never thought of that.
- 17:48That's amazing.
- 17:49That was the reason I did it that
- 17:51way.
- 17:52So it's there, but all the information is
- 17:55there.
- 17:56And then a couple of things.
- 18:00My email is there.
- 18:02You can contact me.
- 18:04You can text me.
- 18:04We'll set up a time to chat and
- 18:07talk.
- 18:10There is also a YouTube channel for Christ
- 18:14Mission.
- 18:15And just look up Christ Mission.
- 18:18You'll see it on YouTube.
- 18:20And there's also Wandering Monk.
- 18:23And then there's also the Wandering Monk.
- 18:25And there, it's a little more subtle, but
- 18:28there's always a message in there.
- 18:31But folks may not recognize it.
- 18:34Well, I feel like you've kind of put
- 18:36your arm around us during this conversation.
- 18:39All of us will get to listen to
- 18:41this or read it.
- 18:42So thank you so much, Abedneh.
- 18:45Yeah, really, really grateful.
- 18:49I was wondering, you know, the name Benedict,
- 18:53Saint Benedict, founder of the Benedictine Order, has
- 18:55to do with blessing, like benediction.
- 18:59So I was wondering if you could pray
- 19:00a prayer of blessing to just end our
- 19:02time for everyone who's been part of this.
- 19:04Yeah, I would be glad to.
- 19:07In the name of the Father, the Son,
- 19:08and the Holy Spirit.
- 19:12Almighty God, we praise your name.
- 19:16You alone are worthy of honor and glory.
- 19:20And Father, now I pray your blessing upon
- 19:24Chris as he presents this to an audience.
- 19:29I pray your blessing upon the audience that
- 19:31hears it.
- 19:32May they have ears to hear your voice.
- 19:36Lord, give them eyes to see your face.
- 19:40Give them hearts to desire.
- 19:44Father, I pray their blessings.
- 19:46I pray that you give them peace.
- 19:49Peace that can only come from you.
- 19:52Peace that pass us all understanding.
- 19:56I pray in the name of our Lord
- 19:57Jesus who lives and reigns with you and
- 20:00the Holy Spirit, one God, now
- 20:06and
- 20:34forevermore.
- 20:34Amen.
