- 0:00Carmen Lezeth: Hey everyone, welcome to All About the Joy.
- 0:07Carmen Lezeth: I'm so glad to have everyone here.
- 0:09Carmen Lezeth: Cynthia no laughing, but I'm glad that you're here today.
- 0:12Carmen Lezeth: Mario is in the house and maybe we'll see Ama a little bit later.
- 0:16Carmen Lezeth: Thank you, and Rick Costa, as always, so glad you're here.
- 0:19Carmen Lezeth: We have my friend Nilou here.
- 0:21Carmen Lezeth: Hi, and I'm going to try again to say your name.
- 0:24Carmen Lezeth: It's Rustam G.
- 0:26Carmen Lezeth: Right, nilou Rustam.
- 0:26Carmen Lezeth: Hi, and I'm going to try again to say your name.
- 0:26Carmen Lezeth: It's Rustom G, right, nilou, rustom G.
- 0:28Carmen Lezeth: Yep, that's it.
- 0:29Carmen Lezeth: And, as I said a little bit earlier to you, I can't believe I didn't know your last name up until this moment.
- 0:35Carmen Lezeth: But you actually do all my Botox and I'm sorry I'm repeating that again.
- 0:40Carmen Lezeth: We're not supposed to call it Botox, it's I always mess up.
- 0:43Carmen Lezeth: Anti wrinkle what is it Like?
- 0:45Nilu Rustomji: wrinkle relaxer treatment yeah, it's like a broad term for all the different types of wrinkle relaxers that are on the market.
- 0:53Carmen Lezeth: That are on the market.
- 0:54Carmen Lezeth: So, instead of saying Botox, which is like saying Coca-Cola, instead of like Pepsi for people who don't know, because most of our audience, I don't think, is really big on I'm sure Rick's audience huge on Botox, but you do a lot of skincare and the reason why you and I connect so well and it's you know, one of the reasons why I want to tell people how I have guests on the show, how I meet them is I actually went to a place where you used to work, um, and I had a person that I would work with and she would do my stuff, but then she went on vacation.
- 1:29Carmen Lezeth: I met you and that was the end.
- 1:31Carmen Lezeth: You just have a whole different approach to skincare.
- 1:37Carmen Lezeth: That I love, um.
- 1:39Carmen Lezeth: I love your website.
- 1:40Carmen Lezeth: Oh, let me promote your website now and I'll put it at the bottom for everyone to look at.
- 1:44Carmen Lezeth: But it's your skin coach, nilucom, and that's N I L Ucom Um.
- 1:51Carmen Lezeth: But why don't you tell us a little bit how you got into doing skincare?
- 1:57Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, so of course.
- 1:58Nilu Rustomji: So I um didn't think I would be in this role at all.
- 2:01Nilu Rustomji: Um, growing up, my parents are like immigrant Indian people and they have no idea what Botox or any of this is.
- 2:07Nilu Rustomji: But I studied psychology in undergrad and went on to PA school where I was doing different rotations, and landed a rotation in dermatology and, kind of you know, fell in love with it.
- 2:20Nilu Rustomji: I really liked the procedural, hands-on aspect and being able to relate with patients, spend more one-on-one time with them in like a more intimate setting.
- 2:30Nilu Rustomji: So I actually ended up doing medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology for a few years in Santa Barbara before coming back to LA and focusing just on cosmetic injectables and skincare just on cosmetic injectables and skincare.
- 2:49Carmen Lezeth: So there's a huge psychological aspect to how you do skincare, as opposed to the idea that you know cause I've always.
- 2:54Carmen Lezeth: We can talk about this later.
- 2:56Carmen Lezeth: I think other people have questions.
- 2:57Carmen Lezeth: But whenever I tell people I've had Botox done, like whenever they say, oh my God, your skin looks so good, I'm like done like.
- 3:05Carmen Lezeth: Whenever they say, oh my God, your skin looks so good, I'm like, yeah, it's Botox or whatever.
- 3:07Carmen Lezeth: Because when you notice Botox or when you notice it, that's when it's badly done.
- 3:11Carmen Lezeth: But most people who get it done you would never, no one would ever know I'd had it done.
- 3:16Carmen Lezeth: No one.
- 3:18Nilu Rustomji: Exactly, you always think about the people that you see out on the street or in Hollywood and like, oh my gosh, they look terrifying, they do Botox or they do too much.
- 3:26Nilu Rustomji: But yeah, exactly, you don't think about all the people that are walking around that you wouldn't otherwise think twice about.
- 3:32Nilu Rustomji: That do have work done.
- 3:33Nilu Rustomji: But it goes to show that it can be done very naturally, very elegantly.
- 3:40Nilu Rustomji: My whole approach is I don't like cookie cutter approaches.
- 3:45Nilu Rustomji: I think that we're all unique and beautiful in our own ways and we all come from different backgrounds, and so I just really try to highlight that and like each patient's unique anatomy and what.
- 3:56Nilu Rustomji: What are their goals Like, what are their concerns?
- 3:58Nilu Rustomji: Like someone that's an actor, doesn't need to have no movement at all, versus somebody that might want to have, you know that has like really deep lines or wrinkles, you know.
- 4:06Nilu Rustomji: So you have to always cater to the patient, ask about their lifestyle, ask what they're doing at home.
- 4:14Carmen Lezeth: Mario, would you ever get a ton?
- 4:17Maurio Dawson: My wife wouldn't let me.
- 4:19Maurio Dawson: And also I have questions because for me, like for most people, for most listeners and viewers, they know that I have kidney transplant, so I'm immunocompromised, so there are certain things that I cannot do, like I always wanted to get a tattoo but I can't do it.
- 4:35Maurio Dawson: So I always my wife is, you know always wondered what that looks like for someone like me.
- 4:43Maurio Dawson: Could I ever do something like that, even though, cause I've had a major weight loss I've lost like 130 pounds so far.
- 4:50Maurio Dawson: So now I have a lot of wrinkles and cause a lot of loose skin in my face.
- 4:55Maurio Dawson: So that's something I always have a question about if I can do that or not.
- 5:00Nilu Rustomji: Of course.
- 5:00Nilu Rustomji: No, that's very valid and and that actually is a good thing to bring thing to bring up, because a lot of people might think that, oh, it's Botox, whatever, it's nothing.
- 5:09Nilu Rustomji: But it is still a medical procedure and, to your point, it's really important for us to screen patients for these things.
- 5:16Nilu Rustomji: But I always defer to your, you know, rheumatologist, your PCP, your regular physician, to get clearance.
- 5:23Nilu Rustomji: But in your case I'm not providing medical advice but if they which they probably would, because it's a very not like, it's pretty non invasive.
- 5:31Nilu Rustomji: And we do treat a lot of immunocompromised patients.
- 5:36Nilu Rustomji: In fact, you know patients that are undergoing chemotherapy or, you know, have cancer, like sometimes they come in just to feel good and they are oncologists.
- 5:45Nilu Rustomji: You know, tell them like, go get whatever you need done to feel better, to feel happier.
- 5:51Nilu Rustomji: So, yeah, we do treat patients with you know that are have immunosuppression or immunocompromised, but we always will.
- 5:59Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, I just recommend getting clearance from a physician.
- 6:03Maurio Dawson: Yeah, see, that's a question a lot of people wouldn't know.
- 6:06Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, no, that's a fabulous question, yeah.
- 6:08Maurio Dawson: And a lot of these Thank you, I did my homework today.
- 6:13Carmen Lezeth: You earned your salary, Mario.
- 6:16Nilu Rustomji: Thank you.
- 6:18Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: I've also heard of people using it to get rid of migraines Exactly.
- 6:24Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:25Nilu Rustomji: So that, thank you.
- 6:25Nilu Rustomji: Yeah.
- 6:26Nilu Rustomji: So I was going to say a lot of these medicines that are you know now, aesthetic treatments were first indicated for medical use, so migraines, nerve disorders like movement disorders, urinary incontinence, excessive sweating.
- 6:42Maurio Dawson: I didn't know that, yeah.
- 6:45Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, I did not know yeah, yeah, I was today years old.
- 6:48Maurio Dawson: How about?
- 6:48Carmen Lezeth: that now you did extra homework more homework let me just write rick, do you have any questions?
- 7:03Rick Costa: you're falling behind on the homework I was just wondering, like the difference between all the technology we have now compared to like 25 years ago, is it like really really different or pretty much the same?
- 7:19Nilu Rustomji: that's a good question.
- 7:19Nilu Rustomji: I mean a little bit of both.
- 7:21Nilu Rustomji: Um, you, knowox, I think, first got its aesthetic indication, at least in like 1989.
- 7:28Nilu Rustomji: Um, but these again medications have been studied for like decades now.
- 7:33Nilu Rustomji: At this point, um, I would say, newer formulations of, let's say, like Botox or certain fillers are still being developed.
- 7:40Nilu Rustomji: Um, I would say, more importantly, we're learning, as practitioners or healthcare providers, how to do it more properly.
- 7:45Nilu Rustomji: We're learning, as practitioners or healthcare providers, how to do it more properly.
- 7:47Nilu Rustomji: We're learning a lot more about facial anatomy, about you know which plane to inject in without going into too much detail.
- 7:55Nilu Rustomji: So it's really actually about, I think, like finessing our expertise which makes it so.
- 8:01Nilu Rustomji: It's we're constantly learning, which is so cool and so.
- 8:04Nilu Rustomji: So, yes, there's always new products like coming out or in the pipeline, but a lot of these have been very well studied for a long time and are pretty safe for use.
- 8:15Carmen Lezeth: I think one of the things I found interesting that you do that I didn't have done before.
- 8:21Carmen Lezeth: So I used to go to a man who's a surgeon have done before.
- 8:24Carmen Lezeth: So I used to go to a man who's a surgeon but he does plastic surgery whatever.
- 8:35Maurio Dawson: And I went.
- 8:36Maurio Dawson: Why is Mario laughing?
- 8:36Carmen Lezeth: Because we're talking about derm and I keep looking at my wrinkles in my forehead.
- 8:40Carmen Lezeth: Baby, you're beautiful.
- 8:42Carmen Lezeth: I just found a very prominent place, because the way I ended up learning about Botox was I had this friend who I met getting my nails done.
- 8:52Carmen Lezeth: This woman, she was next to me getting her nails done.
- 8:55Carmen Lezeth: I was having a conversation.
- 8:56Carmen Lezeth: She interjected and we started talking afterwards and then we went out to dinner and we became friends and a year into our friendship we were having dinner and I was like, oh, I really really have to get something done.
- 9:08Carmen Lezeth: You know, like you kid around with your friend, you're like, oh, I got to get something done here.
- 9:12Carmen Lezeth: And she was like, oh, no, what you need is like some Botox here and here.
- 9:16Carmen Lezeth: And I was like I was like laughing Cause I was like, yeah, girl, whatever, cause I knew nothing about it.
- 9:23Carmen Lezeth: And she's like, no, for real.
- 9:25Carmen Lezeth: If you ever want to go with me, you know I've had everything done and I'm like what it had her nose done when she was 18.
- 9:37Carmen Lezeth: She'd had her boobs done, she'd had a facelift, and I'm telling you here's how naive I was.
- 9:40Carmen Lezeth: I honestly can tell you before that day, if someone had told me that they had had all this stuff done, I'd be like.
- 9:47Carmen Lezeth: I can't be friends with her because I had a judgment about it.
- 9:50Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:51Carmen Lezeth: And here I was hanging out with this woman for over a year, having dinner once a month like we'd always get together.
- 9:56Carmen Lezeth: You know what I mean?
- 9:56Carmen Lezeth: We went to yoga class.
- 9:57Carmen Lezeth: I wanted to shoot myself because I hate yoga.
- 10:00Carmen Lezeth: She tried to get me into yoga class or whatever, but she was a good friend.
- 10:04Carmen Lezeth: And when I realized all the work she had done and how beautiful I would have never guessed I would have it never dawned on me.
- 10:11Carmen Lezeth: So I went with her.
- 10:13Carmen Lezeth: I went to a very I know you would know I think we've already talked about this, but I know you would know who it is a surgeon or whatever.
- 10:19Carmen Lezeth: And when I went in there, he was, I mean, I left there.
- 10:27Carmen Lezeth: I went in thinking, okay, well, yeah, maybe I could get.
- 10:29Carmen Lezeth: I left that visit being like so broken, like I was ugly.
- 10:32Carmen Lezeth: I needed everything done.
- 10:34Carmen Lezeth: You need filler here, you need this there, you need all this stuff.
- 10:39Carmen Lezeth: And he obviously didn't take any psychology classes?
- 10:41Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: He obviously didn't take any psychology classes.
- 10:42Rick Costa: No, right, exactly, I don't want to do that.
- 10:47Nilu Rustomji: A lot of male surgeons they, yeah, I mean, and look, here's the thing.
- 10:51Carmen Lezeth: He's very prominent, he's worked on a lot of Hollywood celebrities and I know Nilo, you know who it is, but it's just, I think he just knows.
- 10:58Carmen Lezeth: Like he was just cut into the chase Like here's all the stuff you can get done.
- 11:02Carmen Lezeth: It'll cost like $28,000 and whatever.
- 11:04Carmen Lezeth: You know what I mean.
- 11:05Carmen Lezeth: Like, well, he didn't say that.
- 11:12Carmen Lezeth: He sent me to the next room, which was the whole budgeting person who can set you up with a credit card and the payment plan, and I remember being like, yeah, I mean, I felt I have never had bad self-esteem.
- 11:20Carmen Lezeth: But the difference with you and where I met you is it's is it all women there?
- 11:26Carmen Lezeth: It was all women at one point.
- 11:28Carmen Lezeth: It's all women, and that was the first thing I noticed and it's just a whole different nurturing thing.
- 11:34Carmen Lezeth: And then you were just, you know, I think you said to me wow, you have such great skin.
- 11:46Carmen Lezeth: And I was like I think it's that nurturing aspect.
- 11:50Carmen Lezeth: There is a difference between and this is not to be judgmental of men in this field, but there is a difference between women helping other women through this, because I think I'm not saying all women, but you're more about how you go about it.
- 12:08Carmen Lezeth: Like you use different things on different parts of my face.
- 12:12Carmen Lezeth: Yes, for the injectables, where that never happened before, it was just all botox, yeah, yeah, and you explained it to me.
- 12:19Carmen Lezeth: You were like for this area, we're going to use this and for here, so I get botox, just so.
- 12:24Carmen Lezeth: People who because I don't think anyone in this room besides well, rick, you get a lot of it done I can tell we're almost in there frozen.
- 12:34Maurio Dawson: We listen and we don't judge.
- 12:39Carmen Lezeth: So everyone knows, I don't mind sharing.
- 12:40Carmen Lezeth: So I have a line that goes here.
- 12:42Carmen Lezeth: Right, it's a pretty deep one that goes through here.
- 12:45Carmen Lezeth: That bothers me.
- 12:46Carmen Lezeth: You can't see it now because she thinks yeah, no, no, no, nilu does it, nilu does.
- 12:52Carmen Lezeth: But there is a line here that I have that you can't see now so you're saying you look like a vulcan without nilo nilu that's, that's right.
- 13:04Carmen Lezeth: I look horrible without her, but it's called the 11s, right?
- 13:08Carmen Lezeth: Yes, yeah, but why do I only have one line?
- 13:11Carmen Lezeth: It's weird, it's not weird?
- 13:14Nilu Rustomji: This is what it is.
- 13:15Nilu Rustomji: I have one line Just to get to a little muscle.
- 13:17Nilu Rustomji: So sometimes actually and that's again we're all very unique.
- 13:20Nilu Rustomji: Somebody's muscle here can be distributing in various different ways, so the line there might look different than your neighbor's line.
- 13:29Carmen Lezeth: So we put a lot here and then I get this area here done, whatever that's called.
- 13:34Carmen Lezeth: What's the outside eyes?
- 13:36Carmen Lezeth: The crow's feet.
- 13:37Carmen Lezeth: I don't like that term.
- 13:39Carmen Lezeth: I think we need to change that.
- 13:41Carmen Lezeth: It sounds nasty crows feet.
- 13:44Carmen Lezeth: We need to call it a mouse, like I don't know song, whatever like kitten whispers or something would you prefer talons would you prefer talons?
- 13:58Carmen Lezeth: I don't even know what talons are.
- 14:01Carmen Lezeth: I'm so sorry bigger claws.
- 14:04Carmen Lezeth: I'm gonna say we can be more positive about right away.
- 14:06Carmen Lezeth: And I get those done and I get, uh, the forehead done, but you do it lightly so I can still move my eyebrows.
- 14:14Carmen Lezeth: So I don't have that thing where you can't move your eyebrows yeah, or you're too heavy.
- 14:18Nilu Rustomji: We don't want that.
- 14:19Nilu Rustomji: What's too heavy?
- 14:20Nilu Rustomji: Oh, when it's like you feel like that yeah, your brows are way down, your lids are yeah, yeah.
- 14:25Carmen Lezeth: Yeah Well, you're nice and lifted and awake, yes, yes, but what else do you enjoy about doing the work that you do?
- 14:38Nilu Rustomji: What, what don't I love?
- 14:40Nilu Rustomji: No, I think you actually kind of mentioned it a little bit earlier Mostly women, you know, mostly female patients.
- 14:47Nilu Rustomji: We do definitely have a good number of male patients coming in, but I just love and I'm so inspired by my female patients, our hustlers, their moms.
- 14:59Nilu Rustomji: They have 10 different roles and they, you know, for me, it's my opportunity as a healthcare provider to take care of them and for them to like get in that chair just like go of everything, relax and like take care of themselves.
- 15:14Nilu Rustomji: And I feel like you know, as women we're oftentimes in a nurturing role or whatever, but but now like, at least in our, our generations, of where we're full-time employees a lot of the times as well, and so being able to navigate all those things, being a mom, being, you know, working full time, whatever it is, we might not often give ourselves grace or time to like take care of ourselves, and so being able to provide that for patients is really rewarding, yeah, and I learned a lot.
- 15:42Nilu Rustomji: I learned so much from my patients.
- 15:44Nilu Rustomji: I learned a lot from you, Carmen.
- 15:46Carmen Lezeth: We had a great conversation last time.
- 15:47Carmen Lezeth: That was just too funny, I mean.
- 15:49Carmen Lezeth: I couldn't believe.
- 15:49Carmen Lezeth: I was so excited to, I was nervous about asking you to come on the show and then when you were like yeah, I was like, oh, my god, really it was so random.
- 16:01Carmen Lezeth: Um well, cynthia, do you guys?
- 16:04Carmen Lezeth: Do you guys have any other questions?
- 16:05Carmen Lezeth: I don't want to dominate, but you know, jump in, I will have the conversation by myself with her and you guys just be out there.
- 16:10Carmen Lezeth: I don't want to know.
- 16:11Carmen Lezeth: No, uh-oh, what just happened?
- 16:15Carmen Lezeth: I got to find him.
- 16:19Carmen Lezeth: What just happened, mario?
- 16:24Carmen Lezeth: What happened?
- 16:26Carmen Lezeth: I got to move you over.
- 16:27Maurio Dawson: I was just sitting here minding my Black business and it happened.
- 16:32Carmen Lezeth: That's a good segue.
- 16:33Carmen Lezeth: Is there a difference when it comes to different ethnicities, colors of skin tone, when you do some of these procedures?
- 16:42Carmen Lezeth: Because I want to be clear, I have no idea what's happening.
- 16:47Carmen Lezeth: I don't know what he's doing.
- 16:49Carmen Lezeth: I don't know either.
- 16:50Carmen Lezeth: I'm just sitting here's doing?
- 16:52Maurio Dawson: I don't know either.
- 16:52Maurio Dawson: I'm just sitting here.
- 16:54Maurio Dawson: I swear I'm not touching nothing.
- 16:56Maurio Dawson: Look, I turned the TV off.
- 16:58Maurio Dawson: Make sure the internet's off.
- 17:00Maurio Dawson: Look, nobody else is here.
- 17:02Maurio Dawson: I don't know.
- 17:07Carmen Lezeth: Sorry, Again, it's our first week, but let's go back to that question, Like is there a difference between different ethnicities when it comes to all the different types of skincare you do?
- 17:21Carmen Lezeth: Because I want to be really clear.
- 17:22Carmen Lezeth: You don't just do a wrinkle relaxing oh my God, why can't I think of what it is?
- 17:28Carmen Lezeth: What is it?
- 17:29Carmen Lezeth: Wrinkle relaxer treatment?
- 17:30Carmen Lezeth: I can't say that I love that term.
- 17:33Carmen Lezeth: I'm tripping over my own, Um.
- 17:37Carmen Lezeth: But Botox, it's not the only thing you do.
- 17:39Carmen Lezeth: You do a lot of other things.
- 17:40Carmen Lezeth: That's on your website as well.
- 17:41Carmen Lezeth: And again, I want to do a shout out to your website one more time.
- 17:44Carmen Lezeth: Your skin coach, Nilu N I L Ucom, Um.
- 17:49Carmen Lezeth: But yeah, let's, I I'd love to know that.
- 17:52Carmen Lezeth: Like, what is the?
- 17:54Nilu Rustomji: differences or are there any differences?
- 17:55Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, great question.
- 17:56Nilu Rustomji: I would say a really common one that we have to consider is things like lasers, microneedling, chemical peels Usually a procedure, especially that involves heat like lasers.
- 18:09Nilu Rustomji: I can't do a lot of lasers because I might pigment, so I might hyperpigment or hypopigment, so like I can get darker, lighter spots after certain treatments because we have more melanin in our skin.
- 18:22Nilu Rustomji: So certain procedures not that we can't do all lasers you know there are lasers that are safe for like all skin types across the board, but there are some that you want to just be more cognizant of and certain peels, like if they're like really high depth peels that are getting deep into the skin layers, we'd have to be a little more careful of as well.
- 18:43Carmen Lezeth: In terms of injectables, you know, like Botox or filler, you know we do that for all you should explain what filler is, because I don't even think you guys know what filler is, do you?
- 18:54Maurio Dawson: Yes, I'm very astute.
- 18:58Carmen Lezeth: Thank you very much.
- 18:59Carmen Lezeth: Maybe for Cynthia and Rick or for our podcast listeners.
- 19:02Carmen Lezeth: Maybe they don't know what filler is no, I'm just joking.
- 19:06Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: I'm just joking.
- 19:07Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: I know I love you.
- 19:08Nilu Rustomji: So filler it's commonly called dermal filler and most dermal fillers are composed of what we call hyaluronic acid.
- 19:16Nilu Rustomji: Hyaluronic acid is a component that's naturally in our skin already.
- 19:19Nilu Rustomji: It's what draws water and moisture into the skin and hydrates it.
- 19:24Nilu Rustomji: So, basically, what you know these chemists have done essentially have created synthetic hyaluronic acid gel, and that's what is in a filler and what it does is.
- 19:34Nilu Rustomji: You know, when we inject it let's say really commonly in the lips, you know the gel kind of plumps up the lips.
- 19:41Nilu Rustomji: It hydrates the lips, yeah, but sometimes that looks so bad If it's done, badly Shout out to Kylie Jenner.
- 19:49Carmen Lezeth: You don't know that can be a client.
- 19:51Carmen Lezeth: Shout out to Kylie Jenner You're so mean, you don't know that can be a client.
- 19:58Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: You're just giving a shout out to Kylie Jenner.
- 20:01Maurio Dawson: Just a pleasant shout out.
- 20:03Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: I actually have a question about the hyaluronic.
- 20:06Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: So of course we've seen commercials about hyaluronic acid creams and serums and things like that.
- 20:12Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: Do those work just as well as the injections?
- 20:18Nilu Rustomji: Not for the same purpose?
- 20:19Nilu Rustomji: That's a great question.
- 20:20Nilu Rustomji: So topically, so in like skincare, like lotions and moisturizers hyaluronic acid in it is beautiful, it can really help again seal like moisture into the skin.
- 20:30Nilu Rustomji: So if you have dry skin, if you have eczema, it's great for that, but it's not filling areas of volume loss.
- 20:38Nilu Rustomji: So for instance, mario, you were saying like you lost some weight recently.
- 20:41Nilu Rustomji: So a lot of patients you know that even on like Ozempic or any of those like weight loss medications, they've also noticed a lot of like volume loss in their face.
- 20:51Nilu Rustomji: Because that you know that goes down over time.
- 20:54Nilu Rustomji: We lose bone mass, all those our skin starts to sag or whatever.
- 20:59Nilu Rustomji: So filler can actually help when it's injected to refill areas that we've lost volume.
- 21:06Nilu Rustomji: So topically it's not going to go in deep enough to replace that volume because it's deeper areas in the face that are losing volume.
- 21:14Carmen Lezeth: Some people get it like um, they get it here at the laugh lines Um, right, um, I had filler done once by that man and uh, and they I'm sorry.
- 21:26Nilu Rustomji: Cause I did the one who will not be named.
- 21:28Nilu Rustomji: I'm sorry, cause I did the one who will not be named.
- 21:32Carmen Lezeth: He does huge celebrities, by the way, but um they they put in filler here.
- 21:42Nilu Rustomji: Uh, why do they do that?
- 21:43Nilu Rustomji: You're not really doing that as much anymore.
- 21:45Nilu Rustomji: Um, like in the under eyes.
- 21:46Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, they did an under eyes and then it was stuck here and, by the way, that doesn't really go away for like a year.
- 21:55Carmen Lezeth: I went back in and he was trying to whatever they were doing, trying to take it out, but it really stays for a while yeah, they can be stubborn.
- 22:03Nilu Rustomji: It can take some sessions of dissolving.
- 22:05Nilu Rustomji: We don't.
- 22:05Nilu Rustomji: You know we do under eye filler still, yes, here and there, but again.
- 22:10Nilu Rustomji: So actually goes back to one of those things that, like as injectors or surgeons, we've learned now you know filler might not, is not usually the best uh treatment for that area.
- 22:20Nilu Rustomji: It's such a thin air like the skin is so thin there.
- 22:23Nilu Rustomji: It's very delicate.
- 22:23Nilu Rustomji: It's our eye muscles around that area.
- 22:26Nilu Rustomji: It's constantly like blinking and contracting.
- 22:27Nilu Rustomji: So why would you put a gel there that you know takes in water and moisture and plumps the area you don't want to get plump here?
- 22:35Nilu Rustomji: You don't look like you have big under eye bags.
- 22:39Carmen Lezeth: I had a thing right here, and here's the thing you have never said to me.
- 22:42Carmen Lezeth: This is the other thing I like about you.
- 22:44Carmen Lezeth: I've never walked into your office and you've been like Ooh, you know what, carmen, I think it's time for you to try.
- 22:49Carmen Lezeth: Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 22:50Carmen Lezeth: You know like, if anything, you kind of dissuade me from doing things, cause I'll be like okay, no, but seriously, you're good, it's all good, you know, but I think that's a really good thing because you're being very honest and you're not going to overdo it.
- 23:08Carmen Lezeth: You know like, as we were talking about some celebrities last, like two sessions ago, whatever, in our, in our private lounge, or I think it was a Friday night thing this obsession with, like, pamela Anderson not wearing makeup and you know, everyone is so like, oh, my God, she's so beautiful and she's so awesome and rah, rah.
- 23:27Carmen Lezeth: And yeah, I'm all happy for her, but she's had a lot of work done, so it's very different than a woman of her age and I believe she's in her 50s now.
- 23:38Carmen Lezeth: Right, I feel like she might be a little older of a particular age
- 23:41Carmen Lezeth: she's a woman of a particular age.
- 23:42Carmen Lezeth: Thank you, mario.
- 23:43Carmen Lezeth: But and so the idea of us being all excited about someone who's going quote, unquote, natural, because they're not wearing makeup really irks me, which is why I talk about what I do.
- 23:58Carmen Lezeth: But go ahead, I'm sorry, sorry to cut you off.
- 24:01Nilu Rustomji: But yeah, no, that's like a pet peeve of mine when they're like, oh, I've never done injectables or I've never done Botox, cause they'll name.
- 24:06Nilu Rustomji: I think this is my theory.
- 24:08Nilu Rustomji: Certain celebrities will name the brand.
- 24:11Nilu Rustomji: Then they could be like, well, I don't get botox, but secretly they actually get disport or different brain, you know right, or whoever.
- 24:18Nilu Rustomji: You know other young adults that are like looking up to these celebrities, thinking like, oh my gosh, they have perfect skin or they have a perfect lips or perfect base, and like they're all natural, like you know, it's just like you just teach their own.
- 24:31Nilu Rustomji: But for me I'm like, oh, you're just making other people feel bad by not being honest.
- 24:35Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:37Carmen Lezeth: I mean, and you use this port here, right?
- 24:41Carmen Lezeth: I forget what it is, but you know.
- 24:43Carmen Lezeth: I believe so, yeah so like if I were to say something like, let's say, I was being interviewed, I'd be like oh yeah, no, I don't use what's a third one I've never used Because.
- 24:58Nilu Rustomji: I use Botox and Dysport.
- 24:58Nilu Rustomji: There must be another one.
- 24:59Nilu Rustomji: So that's what you're saying.
- 24:59Nilu Rustomji: People are lying and saying that's my.
- 25:00Nilu Rustomji: I wonder that sometimes, yeah, like, who is it Like?
- 25:02Nilu Rustomji: Oh my gosh.
- 25:03Carmen Lezeth: That's how they're getting away with it.
- 25:04Carmen Lezeth: They're saying they don't drink Coca-Cola, but they're over there drinking Pepsi.
- 25:08Nilu Rustomji: That's my theory there is no way, like this celebrity has not done any, like she's using olive oil Okay.
- 25:21Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: The lies the lies.
- 25:23Carmen Lezeth: Well, that's when it's crazy too.
- 25:24Carmen Lezeth: And here's the thing Now that I do it and I've been doing it for years now and I get it I can tell, I can just tell, I can pinpoint it's like gay radar or something you can just tell that somebody has.
- 25:44Carmen Lezeth: I really have bad gay radar.
- 25:46Carmen Lezeth: By the way, my friend Richard used to be able to be like I'd be like, oh, that man is fine, I'm going to give him my number and he'd be like, yeah, you're gay, don't even bother.
- 25:58Carmen Lezeth: I want my number but go ahead, but can't you tell?
- 26:03Carmen Lezeth: I mean you're a professional so you can tell when people have had stuff done.
- 26:07Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, yeah, usually I mean on on TV.
- 26:09Nilu Rustomji: Sometimes I, sometimes I can't focus on like whatever these reality television shows and stuff, because I'm so focused on their face.
- 26:17Nilu Rustomji: I'm like, oh my God, they look terrible.
- 26:21Carmen Lezeth: Okay, wait, wait.
- 26:21Carmen Lezeth: Do you sometimes look at people and be like wow, they really do need some work.
- 26:27Nilu Rustomji: No, usually it's the opposite.
- 26:28Nilu Rustomji: It's like you've done too much, oh okay.
- 26:31Nilu Rustomji: Or like I'm still moving.
- 26:33Nilu Rustomji: I okay moving, I'm like, ah no, that looks weird I do.
- 26:39Maurio Dawson: I do have a question do you work with people who have, like, uh, surgery scars like keloids or things like that, and helping them reduce those scars?
- 26:49Nilu Rustomji: yeah, so good question yeah, so I did that a lot in my old dermatology clinic where I was doing more like medical surgical dermatology.
- 26:57Nilu Rustomji: We would sometimes remove even big keloids like on the ears surgically.
- 27:02Nilu Rustomji: A lot of times we can inject it with Kenalog, which is like a steroid.
- 27:08Maurio Dawson: Can you?
- 27:08Carmen Lezeth: just tell me what that is.
- 27:10Carmen Lezeth: I don't even know what you're talking about, Mario.
- 27:12Carmen Lezeth: For example, keloids are raised scars.
- 27:13Maurio Dawson: Can you just tell me what that is.
- 27:14Maurio Dawson: I don't even know what you're talking about.
- 27:15Maurio Dawson: Mario, for example, keloids are raised scars on your body.
- 27:19Maurio Dawson: So, for example, this is a keloid.
- 27:22Maurio Dawson: Do you see that?
- 27:24Carmen Lezeth: Yeah.
- 27:25Maurio Dawson: Okay, that's a keloid, so it's a raised scar off the body that you can actually see, and then there are ways to reduce the size of the scar.
- 27:36Maurio Dawson: So I was wondering if she worked with people with stuff like that.
- 27:40Nilu Rustomji: Okay, yeah, and a lot of dermatology or aesthetic practitioners will, and yeah, so you can typically inject it with the steroids.
- 27:48Nilu Rustomji: It's different than Botox or filler, but we've actually found uh, there's evidence that, like even for women, like who's recently had a C-section, or if you have a recent injury or surgery, doing Botox around the line of injury, um, can actually help prevent like scarring or maybe maybe even keloid scarring.
- 28:09Nilu Rustomji: Keloid scarring is like kind of a next level type of scar, but but we have have found that because it I have to read more into like the research behind it, but it I think helps basically relax the muscle fibers around that scar so it doesn't contract as unevenly and like it's not as misaligned, um, so it is actually kind of a cool like botox can be used for so many things.
- 28:30Maurio Dawson: It's quite fascinating okay, cool, I've done my homework, rick you seem.
- 28:38Carmen Lezeth: What are you?
- 28:39Carmen Lezeth: Okay?
- 28:40Carmen Lezeth: Wait, I want to make sure it's okay.
- 28:41Carmen Lezeth: Very talkative I'm so confused.
- 28:46Rick Costa: Oh yeah, so talkative.
- 28:48Rick Costa: All this, this is all new.
- 28:50Rick Costa: I'm absorbing it all.
- 28:51Rick Costa: Okay, I did have a.
- 28:53Rick Costa: Okay, I did have a funny question maybe funny, maybe not funny but do you ever get anybody come to you and be like I want to look like this?
- 29:03Nilu Rustomji: and you're like, baby, I'm not god, oh, my gosh, yeah, it doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen and it is a little bit of a pet peeve of mine as well, because I'm like, yeah, first of all, that's a filter, so that's not even a real person, right, right.
- 29:16Nilu Rustomji: Sometimes it's like you know they're using a filter or pictures of somebody that has a completely different anatomy or features.
- 29:23Nilu Rustomji: And again, it doesn't happen a lot Usually.
- 29:25Nilu Rustomji: For me it's more so, just like setting realistic expectations of what we can achieve with injectables alone.
- 29:32Nilu Rustomji: I mean, granted, I'm not a plastic surgeon, so maybe they can do it, you know, alter the appearance a bit more.
- 29:39Nilu Rustomji: But but also, you know, we have to the psychology that comes in is, you know, we kind of mentally have to screen for patients that might have body dysmorphic disorder or something else going on, where you know they may not ever be happy with whatever cosmetic treatment they get, and that's a different type of thing?
- 30:05Nilu Rustomji: Not a lot, at least not where I work.
- 30:07Nilu Rustomji: I'm in Santa Monica, where most of our patients are very like.
- 30:10Nilu Rustomji: I want it natural.
- 30:12Nilu Rustomji: I just want to age, gracefully, you know, carmen.
- 30:18Carmen Lezeth: You guys do screen, like so.
- 30:20Carmen Lezeth: So the way it happens is you have to fill out all this paperwork and it's on an iPad thing or whatever, but you have to fill out all this stuff and you have to.
- 30:28Carmen Lezeth: They take pictures every time you come in I.
- 30:31Carmen Lezeth: Why do you guys take pictures every time?
- 30:34Nilu Rustomji: I know sometimes it's, you know, patients may think it's a little excessive, but it's kind of like our, it's like a tool for us, you know.
- 30:42Nilu Rustomji: So we can see the progress, which is really nice.
- 30:45Nilu Rustomji: But also, if there are a lot of times patients like don't notice certain things until everything else looks better, and then they're like but now I have this, and then we look at the photos and we're like, oh, but you always had that and you're just noticing it more.
- 30:57Carmen Lezeth: Oh, right Right.
- 30:58Nilu Rustomji: Okay, nice for patients too.
- 31:00Nilu Rustomji: They're like oh okay, okay, I see it now.
- 31:02Carmen Lezeth: So yeah, but I'm just saying it's a pretty intensive thing and I feel like you guys take a lot of time.
- 31:07Carmen Lezeth: Well, you take a lot of time to talk to people to get a feel for if they're crazy or not.
- 31:13Carmen Lezeth: I don't know.
- 31:13Carmen Lezeth: It's just my feeling, I'm just saying with me, because it just felt like you took so much.
- 31:18Carmen Lezeth: I'm like, this girl ain't got no other appointments.
- 31:23Nilu Rustomji: Meanwhile, my staff is like bringing the light.
- 31:28Carmen Lezeth: They're like go girl.
- 31:29Carmen Lezeth: No, this thing is very thorough, and I think that might also be the difference between again, this is just my experience, and I've been having botox on, I think, for maybe a good 10 years now, maybe 10 years and I have to say in my experience, um, there's a difference between going to men and going to women.
- 31:48Carmen Lezeth: If you're a woman, for me it was, you know what I mean, or it has been um, but there were also what they call um botox bars.
- 31:59Carmen Lezeth: Is that the right terminology?
- 32:01Carmen Lezeth: Do you know what I'm talking about?
- 32:03Carmen Lezeth: there's so many like so, where you go to like somebody's house or they come in like a truck no, like on montana here in santa monica, where just it's like you walk in and they're just like off the street.
- 32:13Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, you should never go to those places.
- 32:15Carmen Lezeth: You should always go to a licensed person.
- 32:18Carmen Lezeth: I mean, why don't you tell us what you should do?
- 32:20Carmen Lezeth: Neelu, I don't know.
- 32:21Carmen Lezeth: I mean you can get Botox at your nail salon.
- 32:24Carmen Lezeth: You can get it.
- 32:25Carmen Lezeth: I would never do that.
- 32:27Carmen Lezeth: You can get it.
- 32:28Carmen Lezeth: Seriously, you never noticed that you go into a nail salon and they're like can we do Botox and waxing?
- 32:32Carmen Lezeth: I'm like I would never do either one of those things.
- 32:37Rick Costa: Number two please cocktail and fill in my hair.
- 32:41Nilu Rustomji: Doing it at the fast food restaurants.
- 32:43Carmen Lezeth: now too, tell people who might be interested in their first time what they might want to look for or stay away from what they might want to look for or stay away from.
- 32:56Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, yeah, I mean yeah, do your research right so you know who's the provider that you're going to, where, where.
- 33:02Nilu Rustomji: Where do they go to school?
- 33:02Nilu Rustomji: Where do they get licensed?
- 33:03Nilu Rustomji: What kind of training do they do?
- 33:04Nilu Rustomji: What do they do on a daily basis?
- 33:05Nilu Rustomji: You know, not to say you can't do lasers and other things, but for us, like you know, I specialize just in injectables, which I really like.
- 33:12Nilu Rustomji: So I'm not a jack of all trades, I'm really specializing in this one thing.
- 33:17Nilu Rustomji: So I just think patients really like that and feel more comfortable with it.
- 33:20Nilu Rustomji: Reviews, referrals, those are all the best.
- 33:25Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, yeah, I think referrals are great because then you know, okay, like my best friend or my cousin or whoever has seen them, they trust them.
- 33:34Nilu Rustomji: But really you know you want to go to a licensed medical professional, which in, at least in California I'm not sure about the East Coast states, but usually it has it has to be an RN, so in registered nurse, nurse practitioner, pa, physician assistant, which is what I am or an MD medical professional like a doctor.
- 33:54Carmen Lezeth: Right and look that's not to say that places that people go.
- 33:57Carmen Lezeth: And it is here on Montana, on Santa Monica, where I went once and I was like okay, I'm never doing that again, like because I was so afraid, I felt so uncomfortable.
- 34:05Carmen Lezeth: They were nice and it was fine, right?
- 34:08Nilu Rustomji: So, yeah, it's not to say that they aren't, you know, professional and don't do a great job.
- 34:13Nilu Rustomji: They might.
- 34:14Nilu Rustomji: So I don't know if there's a certain place you're mentioning, but, like, because that's the other thing, these med spas are opening up very quickly, yes, and across the world, you know, and I've been hearing like in London people don't have to be licensed at all, like medicine I believe's in.
- 34:30Nilu Rustomji: Then that's where it gets really scary, because then where are they getting these medications from?
- 34:35Nilu Rustomji: Where are they getting their?
- 34:37Nilu Rustomji: Where are they getting their botox?
- 34:38Nilu Rustomji: That's where it gets really scary, because there are, you know, fake botox companies out there that distribute them.
- 34:44Carmen Lezeth: And that's her dog she told us, yes, no, so we can let her dog bark in the back.
- 34:53Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: I have a question what are, like the most common side effects to like the not the fillers, but the injections, Botox, all things like that and are there any long-term effects that can happen?
- 35:08Nilu Rustomji: Beauty in Beauty I know I always joke the biggest side effect is you get addicted.
- 35:21Nilu Rustomji: So with any medical procedure there's always certain risks, benefits, side effects.
- 35:27Nilu Rustomji: So most common risk not really a side effect most common risk is risk of bruising or swelling at the injection site.
- 35:31Nilu Rustomji: Usually it's pretty minimal, goes away in a few days.
- 35:35Nilu Rustomji: With Botox you can put makeup on like within 10 or 15 minutes.
- 35:39Nilu Rustomji: Sometimes patients might get a dull headache the next day or two.
- 35:43Nilu Rustomji: Doesn't usually happen with each treatment, but sometimes your first treatment or two you can get a dull headache, usually just because there's so many pokes can get a dull headache, usually just because there's so many pokes.
- 35:57Nilu Rustomji: What else Scary stuff that you might see online is where you get what we call ptosis or droopy eyelid.
- 36:00Nilu Rustomji: That's very rare.
- 36:01Nilu Rustomji: It sucks.
- 36:02Nilu Rustomji: It can happen to anybody, any practitioner, at any time, unfortunately.
- 36:05Nilu Rustomji: But again, it's very rare and we usually do things to try to avoid that With Botox and these type do things to try to avoid that.
- 36:14Nilu Rustomji: With Botox and this type of dysport and all these different wrinkle relaxer treatments, most of what we do is not permanent, which is nice.
- 36:18Nilu Rustomji: So if you ever get a horrible side effect of like a droopy eyelid, um, it will resolve within you know a few weeks, Like two to three months, right Is?
- 36:32Carmen Lezeth: I kind of see you every three months or so.
- 36:34Carmen Lezeth: I seem to, but that's not always the case.
- 36:38Carmen Lezeth: Because this is the other thing you have to understand when you go to certain people, and I don't know why this happens you go to certain people and you pay even the same amount of money, but then it doesn't last as long.
- 36:49Carmen Lezeth: What's that about?
- 36:50Carmen Lezeth: And then sometimes you pay the same amount of money and then your office is calling me like Carmen, are you coming in next week?
- 36:56Carmen Lezeth: I'm like I'm still fine.
- 36:59Carmen Lezeth: You know, what's that about why?
- 37:02Nilu Rustomji: is that so different?
- 37:03Nilu Rustomji: There can be so many variables.
- 37:05Nilu Rustomji: I mean a common one that people assume is like oh, they're over diluting their product or whatever, which at this point I don't think is very common.
- 37:14Nilu Rustomji: I mean hopefully not so.
- 37:17Nilu Rustomji: Botox, dysport, these all come as like a dry powder form, so we all have to dilute it.
- 37:22Nilu Rustomji: We have to mix it up into a liquid solution to inject it.
- 37:26Nilu Rustomji: But maybe some cheaper places will over dilute it so they get more product to be able to inject in patients and that's where their results might not be as strong.
- 37:36Nilu Rustomji: Again, I hope that places aren't really doing that anymore.
- 37:40Nilu Rustomji: It's not good practice, but like a patient's metabolism.
- 37:43Nilu Rustomji: If you're young, you work out a lot, yeah, you go to yoga, hot saunas, you're sweating a lot.
- 37:49Nilu Rustomji: Sometimes you might just like metabolize it very quickly.
- 37:51Nilu Rustomji: A lot of times it's the dose.
- 37:53Nilu Rustomji: You just need a higher dose.
- 37:54Nilu Rustomji: You know a lot of young clients or patients come in for like baby Botox.
- 37:58Nilu Rustomji: So it's like taking a half a Tylenol versus a full Tylenol.
- 38:02Nilu Rustomji: You know, if you take a half a Tylenol you might not get the maximum effects, or it might.
- 38:06Nilu Rustomji: You know, the effects might not last as long because you're not doing a full dosage of what they recommend.
- 38:12Carmen Lezeth: Wait, wait, wait.
- 38:13Carmen Lezeth: How young are people that you just said baby, I just freaked out.
- 38:20Carmen Lezeth: But how young do you see?
- 38:21Carmen Lezeth: They're an age you will not see, I mean.
- 38:26Nilu Rustomji: I don't usually.
- 38:27Nilu Rustomji: I don't usually feel comfortable with treating patients that are like under 21.
- 38:31Nilu Rustomji: I think you know cause.
- 38:33Nilu Rustomji: Well, fda, I think for all of these treatments are FDA approved for 21 and up.
- 38:39Nilu Rustomji: Um, I've had very rare cases where, like, the parent wanted the patient to be treated, which is also kind of weird to me, but um or uncomfortable, but so I will have, like, parents, sign consent, you know oh, and you'll have to do it yeah yeah, they do, I mean yeah yeah, have you ever not done it?
- 39:04Carmen Lezeth: because you disagree with doing it for someone?
- 39:09Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, yeah, if it's, if I think it's going to be unsafe for them, uh, if I think that, you know, or if they have a history of being unhappy with treatments, um, you know certain red flags like that Cause, then at the end of the day, no one's winning right Patients.
- 39:23Nilu Rustomji: I'm happy, I'm unhappy If the results aren't going to look good, if it's unsafe, like those are, you know, it's not, it's not worth it at that point.
- 39:31Nilu Rustomji: Um, but to answer your question, I would say, like the what we call baby Botox for most patients, they're coming in for that, maybe like in their early to mid twenties early to mid twenties.
- 39:53Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, I don't think I ever even thought about Botox until I hit my forties.
- 39:55Carmen Lezeth: I didn't even well, it never even dawned on me.
- 39:56Carmen Lezeth: I had such an attitude about it First of all because I was always thinking about bad Botox.
- 40:00Carmen Lezeth: That's what people don't understand.
- 40:01Carmen Lezeth: When you're looking at Botox, or you're looking at someone and you don't like the way they look although you should keep that shit to yourself but if you don't like what, you're looking at someone and you don't like the way they look although you should keep that shit to yourself but if you don't like, what you're noticing is someone who's maybe gotten it overdone or has done too much, or um, is there an ethical like?
- 40:19Carmen Lezeth: Why do I mean?
- 40:20Carmen Lezeth: Of course there is, but why do surgeons and doctors go overboard?
- 40:25Carmen Lezeth: I mean, do you ever make do, do a mistake and be like maybe that was too much to give her?
- 40:30Carmen Lezeth: I'm not going to give her that much again, or something?
- 40:32Carmen Lezeth: Um, I'm, I'm asking you when you fucked up online.
- 40:42Maurio Dawson: I'm trying to mess up her reviews now.
- 40:44Maurio Dawson: Keep her five stars on Yelp okay.
- 40:51Nilu Rustomji: No, no, but you know what I mean, I think, for me, I'm like, if there's ever anything like, tell me, come see me, I will fix it for you, because, like, no one's perfect, especially if, like you know, it's a new patient to me.
- 41:04Nilu Rustomji: Everyone's anatomy is so different.
- 41:05Nilu Rustomji: So that's why I'm like, just come see me, harass me.
- 41:07Nilu Rustomji: I need to know so I can help you, cause, yeah, I'm not perfect, I don't, you know, I don't ease it necessarily every time, but but I think less is more and I think, carmen, obviously you, I think, agree with that and that's why we get along so well.
- 41:21Nilu Rustomji: I know, yeah, I don't know these surgeons, I mean and there's so many great surgeons out there, obviously so, but I think these ones, and like that we see with the Hollywood celebrities and stuff, I don't know, I don't know if it's like, if it's money, if it's, maybe they just feel uncomfortable saying no to these high client, you know, high paying clients, I don't know.
- 41:43Carmen Lezeth: It's just weird, because sometimes you see the lip thing and I'm like, no, seriously, you think that's working.
- 41:48Carmen Lezeth: Like who did that to you?
- 41:50Carmen Lezeth: Like the lip thing bothered you when you're walking around and you're like it's too much.
- 42:02Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: It looks painful.
- 42:03Rick Costa: There's like a Christian woman that's pretty famous in the christian realm and she definitely had lips done and I can't even look at her now.
- 42:11Carmen Lezeth: So I'm like it's distracting.
- 42:15Rick Costa: Yeah, I can't look at her yeah tell me what she looks like, right is anybody like and how do you find out?
- 42:24Rick Costa: Is anybody like allergic?
- 42:27Nilu Rustomji: good question.
- 42:27Nilu Rustomji: So that's something that we screen for as well, um, typically not with the actual product, um, but we do screen for allergies to uh, the enzyme that can dissolve filler.
- 42:40Nilu Rustomji: There's sometimes cross reactions with like feasting allergies, um, but botox did you say feasting allergies?
- 42:48Rick Costa: yeah, like bees oh that's the allergy I seem to have the eating did you like a prick on, like a unnoticed part of the body or something to?
- 43:08Nilu Rustomji: test.
- 43:08Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, I have, I have done that.
- 43:10Nilu Rustomji: Um, I don't.
- 43:11Nilu Rustomji: It's very rare I have to do that, but yes, we can do that.
- 43:13Nilu Rustomji: Or I'll send them to an allergist because if they have, like, if I'm really actually worried they may have an allergy, I'm like I'm not well equipped.
- 43:20Nilu Rustomji: We have epi pens and benadryl, but if you're gonna have a really bad episode, I want you to go to go to a psychologist, so they're better equipped to handle that.
- 43:27Carmen Lezeth: But also like I.
- 43:28Carmen Lezeth: I mean, I have an EpiPen and I have the medical bracelet, you know, because I have I'm allergic to penicillin and shellfish and when you walk in the office they do an entire health thing and they ask for your doctor's name.
- 43:41Carmen Lezeth: They ask it's such a, it's annoying.
- 43:44Carmen Lezeth: You know what I mean, because I'm like I was just getting Botox.
- 43:49Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, that's why you do it is so that you have all that information and then when you meet with the person the first time, they go through it and have that conversation.
- 43:58Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, and I guess you guys just put that in the file, cause I met you after that.
- 44:02Carmen Lezeth: I met you after I'd already started going to your office.
- 44:05Nilu Rustomji: So um, yeah, if there's like, uh, something very pertinent and impatience medical history that I need to see or be reminded every time, I will like write it all up in their chart I don't want to forget this.
- 44:17Maurio Dawson: I have another question.
- 44:18Maurio Dawson: Um, for those people who are afraid of getting Botox because they don't like needles per se, okay, is there another technique or product they can use to help with skin tightening?
- 44:34Nilu Rustomji: Yes, and actually those patients are some of my favorites.
- 44:36Nilu Rustomji: They're so cute and then cause they work it up.
- 44:40Nilu Rustomji: Usually they work it up in their head and then like and then I start and they're like, oh, that was it.
- 44:44Nilu Rustomji: So yeah, and I have really close friends that are still terrified of blood draws will pass out every time, but they are fine now with Botox.
- 44:53Nilu Rustomji: But yeah, so let's say you know, patient's not qualified for Botox for whatever reason, which is very rare or they don't want to do it and they just want more natural ways to take care of their skin.
- 45:05Nilu Rustomji: I'm a huge advocate for, like topical retinol.
- 45:09Nilu Rustomji: Retinol is great for the skin.
- 45:12Nilu Rustomji: It's, you know, helps to produce collagen.
- 45:15Nilu Rustomji: It helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles, scarring pigmentation.
- 45:19Nilu Rustomji: Long-term use it can actually help prevent skin cancers, which is really great.
- 45:23Nilu Rustomji: A lot of people don't know about that, so that's like the cheapest, easiest thing that you could do at home.
- 45:28Nilu Rustomji: You can either get it prescribed or if you go to, let's say, like a med spa or something they will usually sell like a medical grade version.
- 45:39Carmen Lezeth: There's also over the counter versions of it, but it is weaker, right.
- 45:40Carmen Lezeth: I mean, it's a weaker version, the over the counter.
- 45:43Nilu Rustomji: Well, yeah, it depends, right.
- 45:46Nilu Rustomji: So it's, it might be weaker than a prescription one, but also I'm not a huge fan always of the over the counter ones, because the technology is not that great and it might be more irritating.
- 45:56Nilu Rustomji: So a lot of patients are like, oh, I tried, you know, over the counter rental, and I was so dry and red and flaky and I just, I know, and I'm like, oh, we just got to get you on the right one, like there's there's better ones out there that are formulated to be more gentle, soothing, released in the right layer of the skin.
- 46:13Nilu Rustomji: So it's, it's tolerated better.
- 46:17Carmen Lezeth: But the needles you do.
- 46:18Carmen Lezeth: I mean, cynthia, I know you hate needles and I am not a fan of needles, like especially cause I get blood work done because of my thyroid situation, but like regularly, which is annoying me.
- 46:29Carmen Lezeth: But when you do the needle, it's like I mean we're chit-chatting, blah, blah, blah.
- 46:35Carmen Lezeth: You're like boom, boom and I'm like am I done?
- 46:37Carmen Lezeth: You're like, you're done.
- 46:41Nilu Rustomji: Like needles are really thin that you use too.
- 46:42Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, very, they're like little insulin syringes.
- 46:44Nilu Rustomji: They're very tiny.
- 46:45Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, very, they're like little insulin syringes are very tiny usually I'll be tapping you to like help distract you.
- 46:50Carmen Lezeth: You have a little squeezy ball.
- 46:51Carmen Lezeth: I'll be like squeezing the ball or whatever, and then I'm like I don't squeeze the ball no more, you know we're usually chit-chatting, we're having fun in there, so you know weird.
- 47:01Carmen Lezeth: I know it's, you're very good at it.
- 47:03Carmen Lezeth: I mean I, I know you know that, like I've said that to you, but you're but it's the most comfortable I've ever been.
- 47:08Carmen Lezeth: I enjoy going to see you because I always feel good when I leave too.
- 47:12Carmen Lezeth: So it's not just the work that you're doing and this is just my experience, but you can tell me what the correct thing is.
- 47:20Carmen Lezeth: But when you get Botox done, it takes a few days for it to actually kick in.
- 47:24Carmen Lezeth: So it's not like you get it done and all of a sudden you're, like you know, wrinkle free.
- 47:31Carmen Lezeth: It takes time, but when I go and see you I feel like so relieved because I feel like I had some self care.
- 47:38Nilu Rustomji: Yes, a thousand percent, and I almost see it as like acupuncture because it's little needles.
- 47:43Nilu Rustomji: So, cynthia, you were asking about like migraines before.
- 47:46Nilu Rustomji: So we, we don't.
- 47:48Nilu Rustomji: You know it's technically medical treatment with migraines, but sometimes I'll do little areas for patients.
- 47:53Nilu Rustomji: If they need it for tension release, so like for grinding people grind a lot at night and the temples with grinding and like migraines and, yeah, sometimes they say they feel like immediate relief.
- 48:04Nilu Rustomji: So I do think that there's something to be said about that, about just like the needle relief.
- 48:11Carmen Lezeth: I've tried it in different places too, like cause we were trying to see if we could cause I'm starting to get like little jowls here anyways.
- 48:18Carmen Lezeth: And so instead of you know, I, I never want to have surgery again.
- 48:22Carmen Lezeth: Knock on wood.
- 48:23Carmen Lezeth: Like after having my hip surgery, I never want to have surgery again.
- 48:26Carmen Lezeth: But we tried it there and I was like okay, it didn't really do anything so, and there was no pressure like oh, you have to try it again or you have to do it this way or whatever.
- 48:34Carmen Lezeth: It was like okay, it didn't work, it's fine, you know what I mean?
- 48:36Carmen Lezeth: It didn't work for me, but the needle didn't hurt here either, I think that's just the technique you use or something I don't know what about what?
- 48:45Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: I'm sorry, cynthia um, my question is um, so once you start it and you know you're going for a few months here and there, do you have to continue, or can you just stop at any time and not do it ever again?
- 49:00Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: Or is it something that you always have to keep doing?
- 49:03Carmen Lezeth: no, you have to do it all the time.
- 49:16Nilu Rustomji: Yes, yeah, yeah, absolutely you can stop.
- 49:17Nilu Rustomji: And yeah.
- 49:17Nilu Rustomji: So patients often ask like, well, if I stop, are my wrinkles going to be worse?
- 49:19Nilu Rustomji: No, you know.
- 49:20Nilu Rustomji: So you can stop at any time.
- 49:22Nilu Rustomji: You just go back to you know your baseline.
- 49:24Nilu Rustomji: But, like you know, if you've been doing Botox for five, 10 years and then you you stop, you know you also age during that time you might have like a little more sun damage or you know things like that.
- 49:34Nilu Rustomji: But you know, if you're consistently doing it, you are sorry, you are preventing it lines from forming and getting deeper as well.
- 49:42Nilu Rustomji: So that's why a lot of people see it as like preventative Botox.
- 49:46Nilu Rustomji: Um, because you're preventing deep creases and lines from forming over time.
- 49:51Nilu Rustomji: Um, so even if you decide to do, you know, stop one day your skin's probably still going to look better than it would have had you not done it.
- 49:58Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: Right.
- 49:58Nilu Rustomji: And actually, you know, I think too, like if you're investing all this money to get injectable treatments, you're probably investing in self, like skincare too, at home, or using sunscreen or using retinol.
- 50:09Nilu Rustomji: You're probably doing other things without even really knowing it.
- 50:12Nilu Rustomji: That's also helping, but it but it's it's.
- 50:14Carmen Lezeth: it's like getting your hair done, in a way Like you don't have to get your hair done, but you choose to do it when you want to.
- 50:21Carmen Lezeth: And like I'm not on some regular schedule, I just know when I can see the line here.
- 50:25Carmen Lezeth: That's when I go in.
- 50:27Carmen Lezeth: You know what I mean.
- 50:30Carmen Lezeth: Like when I start to see that whenever, like I'm smiling or something, and the line comes here, I'm like and making the phone call.
- 50:36Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, time to make the phone call hey, this is what you look like actually.
- 50:39Nilu Rustomji: You know like oh yeah, I forgot that that's what it.
- 50:42Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, you, you, yeah, and I and I do have a very deep line here because I'm in my fifties, like it's natural to have that, you know.
- 50:55Carmen Lezeth: But what I love is that I did it for myself, not for anybody else, and I think that's the other part of it too is that you're not doing it, oh, for a boyfriend or whatever, and I want to look young.
- 51:00Carmen Lezeth: It's like no, I just I don't like that crease Cause it.
- 51:04Carmen Lezeth: It makes like it breaks up my face.
- 51:06Carmen Lezeth: To me it does.
- 51:06Carmen Lezeth: I don't like that crease because it makes like it breaks up my face To me it does.
- 51:09Carmen Lezeth: I don't like it, I don't mind.
- 51:10Carmen Lezeth: Like someone had someone I know exactly who was surgeon we talked about earlier.
- 51:14Carmen Lezeth: It's like we could really do some work on those laugh lines and I was like OK, first of all, laugh like that's natural to me.
- 51:23Carmen Lezeth: I don't want no offense.
- 51:25Carmen Lezeth: I love Angela Bassett.
- 51:27Carmen Lezeth: Cynthia, you know the show's on tonight, right?
- 51:29Carmen Lezeth: I love Angela Bassett with all my heart, but I hate the filler.
- 51:35Carmen Lezeth: When people put filler here and I know she's had it, you can see it.
- 51:40Maurio Dawson: Are you coming for the queen of Wakanda?
- 51:42Maurio Dawson: Are you coming for the queen of Wakanda?
- 51:45Maurio Dawson: Are you coming for the queen of Wakanda?
- 51:47Carmen Lezeth: I feel comfortable with the queen from Wakanda because she would admit it too.
- 51:53Maurio Dawson: Don't do Tina Turner okay.
- 51:58Carmen Lezeth: You don't know what I'm saying.
- 51:59Carmen Lezeth: It's the obvious person.
- 52:01Carmen Lezeth: I just don't like the, but someone had told me that I should get that because I have laugh lines and I'm like I'm not doing laugh line filler.
- 52:09Nilu Rustomji: You're a happy person.
- 52:10Nilu Rustomji: You have smile lines.
- 52:13Nilu Rustomji: I couldn't even imagine it.
- 52:14Nilu Rustomji: And then, yeah, if you overdo that, people start to look like apes.
- 52:19Nilu Rustomji: Actually, babies have teardrops.
- 52:26Nilu Rustomji: You know it's natural to have.
- 52:28Carmen Lezeth: Yeah I like the naturally look.
- 52:31Maurio Dawson: I like the natural look I do have one question what about does botox help with tendinitis?
- 52:40Nilu Rustomji: tendinitis, or like oh tendinitis yes, oh, interesting.
- 52:46Maurio Dawson: What was the question?
- 52:46Maurio Dawson: I'm sorry I have.
- 52:48Maurio Dawson: I'm sorry tinnitus.
- 52:50Nilu Rustomji: I'm sorry that's why I was wondering if you were okay, like so the ringing in the ears yes that was a great.
- 52:57Nilu Rustomji: That's a great.
- 52:58Nilu Rustomji: Not that, not that I know of, but I wouldn't be shocked if it did.
- 53:03Nilu Rustomji: No, not that I know of.
- 53:04Nilu Rustomji: But again, sometimes I find out botox helps with certain things and I'm shocked.
- 53:09Nilu Rustomji: I'm like what?
- 53:09Nilu Rustomji: Like I recently read um, my mom was having like, not her, it was like her achilles, but the muscle underneath, like the sole of her foot, and they do botox for that to like help with the with the pain yeah
- 53:23Maurio Dawson: I have plantar fasciitis, and they do it yeah, thank you thank.
- 53:26Maurio Dawson: Thank you.
- 53:26Nilu Rustomji: Yep, yep.
- 53:28Nilu Rustomji: So yeah, not that I, not that I know of, but that would be cool, interesting.
- 53:32Nilu Rustomji: Maybe you're onto something Mario.
- 53:35Carmen Lezeth: What are some basic skincare tips you would tell us to do that have nothing to do with Botox or injectables or whatever?
- 53:43Carmen Lezeth: What are some ideas that we can do to have great skin as we age?
- 53:49Nilu Rustomji: Retinol.
- 53:50Nilu Rustomji: Again, it's a great one.
- 53:51Nilu Rustomji: Most patients can use it.
- 53:53Nilu Rustomji: Obviously, talk to your provider.
- 53:54Nilu Rustomji: There's some exceptions, like if you have eczema or rosacea.
- 53:57Nilu Rustomji: Maybe you'd have to use gentler forms, but retinol is the easiest best thing you could do.
- 54:01Nilu Rustomji: Sunscreen mineral-based sunscreen.
- 54:04Nilu Rustomji: So sunscreen that has zinc or titanium in it is best the over-the-counter ones with like chemical ingredients like oxybenzone.
- 54:13Nilu Rustomji: Those aren't as good.
- 54:14Nilu Rustomji: Vitamin C Vitamin C is great for collagen.
- 54:18Nilu Rustomji: Sun protection.
- 54:19Nilu Rustomji: Helps with pigmentation.
- 54:21Nilu Rustomji: Anti-aging.
- 54:22Nilu Rustomji: Wash your face.
- 54:25Nilu Rustomji: A lot of people don't even do that, really.
- 54:29Nilu Rustomji: Yeah, I feel like sorry, sorry, what do you?
- 54:33Carmen Lezeth: mean people don't wash it, there are people there are people that don't do it I wash my face in the morning and at night.
- 54:40Nilu Rustomji: I'm sorry yeah, or they'll only wash, you know, once, once in the day, I don't know.
- 54:44Nilu Rustomji: No, I well, because at night you do sweat, you know once in the day, I don't know.
- 54:46Carmen Lezeth: No, I well, because at night you do sweat.
- 54:49Carmen Lezeth: You know what I mean.
- 54:49Carmen Lezeth: You do have a little, well, I do.
- 54:51Carmen Lezeth: I don't know what you guys are doing at night.
- 54:54Maurio Dawson: She's like I don't know what you're doing at night, but I don't sweat.
- 54:58Carmen Lezeth: No, but I'm just saying like I, and so of course, at night I take off whatever makeup I may have on, but also just like a cleanse, you know just.
- 55:06Nilu Rustomji: I double cleanse, not not always, but I wear makeup or tits.
- 55:10Nilu Rustomji: It's sunscreen.
- 55:10Nilu Rustomji: I'll double cleanse, for sure.
- 55:12Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, I don't get the People really don't wash their face.
- 55:15Carmen Lezeth: You know, I was shocked to hear that people don't wash their feet.
- 55:18Carmen Lezeth: I was shocked by that, so I don't know why I'm the water run down their feet.
- 55:23Carmen Lezeth: I'm like what?
- 55:24Carmen Lezeth: Oh no, when they're in the shower they just assume, because they're showering, that the water will get to their feet.
- 55:35Carmen Lezeth: And I'm like, okay, and that cannot.
- 55:38Carmen Lezeth: And now I'm glad I shared it with all of you because it cannot get out of my head now.
- 55:46Rick Costa: Okay, something I learned because of some karma, I think said, was because I had this misconception that you don't go there, walk out of the office and you already have instantaneous results.
- 55:54Rick Costa: It actually takes a little bit of time, right.
- 55:57Nilu Rustomji: For the re-correlaxer treatments?
- 55:59Nilu Rustomji: Yes, so like Botox, dysphora, those types of treatments, it takes a few days to a couple weeks, so usually we say 10 to 14 days.
- 56:06Maurio Dawson: So it would say 10 to 14 days.
- 56:07Maurio Dawson: Yeah, it takes 10, 14 days for it to really show a full effect.
- 56:12Carmen Lezeth: Yeah.
- 56:14Rick Costa: Really I didn't know that.
- 56:19Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, so that's why, when I start to see the line, I know it's going to get much deeper.
- 56:23Carmen Lezeth: So that's when I make my appointment, cause it'll be a couple of weeks before it goes away.
- 56:28Carmen Lezeth: Like it, you can't see it now and it's not because of me, it's because I've had it done.
- 56:32Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, there is no like, even if I try to do it, you can't do it because that will keep doing it.
- 56:37Carmen Lezeth: But I remember somebody I think it was you or maybe it was one of other counterparts.
- 56:54Carmen Lezeth: I was like every time I do like when I scrunch my eyes, they're like then stop scrunching your eyes together.
- 56:57Carmen Lezeth: Like I do this and you're like, don't move your arm that way.
- 56:59Carmen Lezeth: But yeah, but it takes a like.
- 57:01Carmen Lezeth: For me, it's usually like I almost immediately see it here, though, like within three or four days.
- 57:07Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: Is that?
- 57:07Carmen Lezeth: normal.
- 57:08Carmen Lezeth: I guess it's a thinner skin or something, I don't know.
- 57:11Carmen Lezeth: But yeah, it's usually like a little bit before you see it fully take effect.
- 57:15Carmen Lezeth: Yeah, and you end up with this.
- 57:20Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: Well, I have to say that, like I've definitely seen this wrinkle relaxer in a whole new light, because I you know I was I was always against it.
- 57:31Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: I hate needles, but the way you describe it and everything it actually it opens people's eyes and minds to the to the whole idea of it, and it's not just for wrinkles, like you said.
- 57:42Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: You know people have excessive sweating and things like that are different, different issues that it works are you gonna get it done now, cynthia.
- 57:51Carmen Lezeth: I don't know, maybe that's gonna get you for your birthday.
- 57:55Carmen Lezeth: It's gonna be all smashed.
- 58:02Carmen Lezeth: I'm so glad you came on.
- 58:07Nilu Rustomji: Thank you so much thank you for having me.
- 58:09Carmen Lezeth: This is wonderful no, I just feel like, first of all, I'm so glad we met, I'm so glad we've become friends and I know I'm your client, but I just really appreciate you coming on and I hope you'll come on again.
- 58:20Carmen Lezeth: Send my client.
- 58:24Carmen Lezeth: But if people want to reach out you, if they have questions or they'd like to meet with you, even if they're not here in Santa Monica or in California, they can go to your website at your skin coach, nilucom.
- 58:34Carmen Lezeth: They can ask you a question or whatever and maybe you might be able to refer them or give them some more advice or information.
- 58:41Carmen Lezeth: Of course, if you're in Santa Monica or in California, please, please, please, go and visit Nilu.
- 58:46Carmen Lezeth: She is amazing.
- 58:48Carmen Lezeth: I just sang in all right there.
- 58:52Carmen Lezeth: But, yeah, thank you so much for coming on.
- 58:56Carmen Lezeth: And Rick Costa, thank you for being here.
- 58:59Carmen Lezeth: Mario, we miss Alma, but we love that she's listening.
- 59:03Carmen Lezeth: She's listening, and Cynthia, as always, and everyone.
- 59:10Carmen Lezeth: Thank you again.
- 59:11Carmen Lezeth: Neelu, thank you again and everyone.
- 59:12Carmen Lezeth: Remember, at the end of the day, it really is all about the joy.
- 59:18Cynthia Ruiz Lopez: All about the joy.
- 59:18Carmen Lezeth: Bye guys, Bye everyone, Bye, Bye.
- 59:21Carmen Lezeth: Thanks for stopping by.
- 59:24Carmen Lezeth: All About the Joy.
- 59:25Carmen Lezeth: Be better and stay beautiful folks.
- 59:27Carmen Lezeth: Have a sweet day.
