- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey guys, thanks for checking out this bonus episode and
- 0:03Speaker 1: happy New Year. Before we get into it, I wanted
- 0:05Speaker 1: to fill you in on all the great content we've
- 0:07Speaker 1: got for you this week here in Disgraceland. All right,
- 0:10Speaker 1: we got the double after party for double the Fun.
- 0:12Speaker 1: That's right, new after party episodes today and on Thursday
- 0:15Speaker 1: this week, before we dive into a ton of brand
- 0:18Speaker 1: new episodes for twenty twenty four. Over in the bad
- 0:21Speaker 1: Lands Feed, check out a brand new episode on Sharon
- 0:24Speaker 1: Stone that drops tomorrow. And today we've got a brand
- 0:26Speaker 1: new episode of our kids in family show Music Lands Stories.
- 0:30Speaker 1: You can find that in its own feed. That show,
- 0:32Speaker 1: of course, is hosted by the great Nikki Lynnette, who
- 0:35Speaker 1: also hosts another double of a show called About a Girl.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And we got a new episode over in that feed too,
- 0:41Speaker 1: this one about Bob Dylan and Sues Rotolo. You might
- 0:44Speaker 1: know her as the woman walking down the street with
- 0:47Speaker 1: Bob on the cover of The Free Wheeling Bob Dylan,
- 0:49Speaker 1: but she actually had a huge impact on Dylan's growth
- 0:52Speaker 1: as an artist early on, So you're going to want
- 0:54Speaker 1: to check that episode of About a Girl out. All right, though,
- 0:56Speaker 1: let's get into the after party shall we. Hey, discos,
- 1:02Speaker 1: need a little more Disgraceland in your life, just to
- 1:05Speaker 1: touch to get you through. Yeah, me too. This is
- 1:08Speaker 1: the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome to Disgraceland,
- 1:12Speaker 1: the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode, a
- 1:30Speaker 1: little thing we like to call the after party. This
- 1:33Speaker 1: is the show after the show, the party after the party,
- 1:35Speaker 1: the bridge to game from one full episode of Disgraceland
- 1:38Speaker 1: to the other, the backyard to dig into the dirt.
- 1:41Speaker 1: On this episode, we are talking about, among other things,
- 1:45Speaker 1: Disgraceland in twenty twenty three looking back, and Disgraceland in
- 1:50Speaker 1: twenty twenty four looking forward, our rewind episode on Johnny Cash.
- 1:54Speaker 1: We're going to give that some attention as well, and
- 1:56Speaker 1: of course your voicemails, your text, dms and more, always
- 2:00Speaker 1: a whole lot of rosie.
- 2:02Speaker 2: All right, disc goes, let's get too experience this week
- 2:16Speaker 2: in Disgraceland. All right, we're doing something a little different.
- 2:19Speaker 2: First of all, Happy New Year to all of you. Okay,
- 2:22Speaker 2: I've talked to some of you on techt some of
- 2:24Speaker 2: you got your voicemails, talk to a bunch of you
- 2:27Speaker 2: on Instagram, not enough of you on Twitter. Some of
- 2:31Speaker 2: you on TikTok, but again not enough there as well.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I just want to say, if I haven't said it, alright,
- 2:36Speaker 1: if you haven't heard me say it, Happy New Year.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I am pumped about twenty twenty four. This is going
- 2:41Speaker 1: to be the greatest year for Disgraceland yet. I can
- 2:44Speaker 1: promise you. We are doing a lot of different things,
- 2:47Speaker 1: a lot of new and exciting things. Got some interesting
- 2:50Speaker 1: projects happening. It's a whole new year for the show
- 2:54Speaker 1: that you have come to love and support, Disgraceland. I'm
- 2:58Speaker 1: here for you, and I just want to say it again,
- 3:00Speaker 1: Happy New Year. This week, we're starting things off. We're
- 3:03Speaker 1: all getting back into it. We've got our production wheels spinning,
- 3:07Speaker 1: the factory is in full flex. This week, we're doing
- 3:10Speaker 1: it a little bit different. We're doing two after party
- 3:12Speaker 1: episodes for you, two bonus episodes this week before we
- 3:14Speaker 1: get into the full episodes next week. That's well, you know,
- 3:19Speaker 1: because we got a lot to talk about. We're gonna
- 3:21Speaker 1: look back first. I want to look back at twenty
- 3:24Speaker 1: twenty three before we look forward to twenty twenty four.
- 3:29Speaker 1: We've created a little production juggernaut over here at Double Elvis.
- 3:34Speaker 1: We produce a lot of content. This year, we've produced
- 3:37Speaker 1: more content than we had any year prior, at least
- 3:40Speaker 1: more Disgraceland content. I'm fairly confident. Just double Elvis. In general,
- 3:44Speaker 1: we were banging it out. But I want to recap
- 3:47Speaker 1: the Disgraceland full episodes that we gave you in twenty
- 3:51Speaker 1: twenty three. Forty full episodes. Forty forty that's insane. We
- 3:57Speaker 1: started the show back in two thousand eighteen. I launched
- 4:01Speaker 1: with twelve episodes. Then I snuck I think in that
- 4:04Speaker 1: same calendar year. Yeah, that same calendar year February eighteen,
- 4:07Speaker 1: two thousand, sorry, twenty eighteen, we did another twelve episodes.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So we did two twelve episode seasons twenty four episodes
- 4:15Speaker 1: for the year in twenty eighteen. We repeated that in
- 4:17Speaker 1: two thousand, nineteen, twenty and twenty one and twenty two,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and then you know, give or take a few. This
- 4:25Speaker 1: year we jumped it up, jumped it up to forty
- 4:27Speaker 1: full episodes, all right, in order. Fifty cent ac DC,
- 4:31Speaker 1: Mac Miller, Lynyrd, Skinnered Otis Redding, lou Reid Part one,
- 4:34Speaker 1: lou Reed Part two, sly Stone, MC five, Skip, James
- 4:38Speaker 1: Willie Nelson Part one, Willie Nelson, Part two, Bruce Springsteen,
- 4:42Speaker 1: Justin Bieber, easy E, j F. Buckley, Jimmy Hendrix, Little
- 4:45Speaker 1: Kim Arrowsmith, Arianna Grande, New Order, Merle Haggard, Sonny Rawlins,
- 4:49Speaker 1: The Velvet Underground, and then ten episodes on the Wu
- 4:53Speaker 1: Tang Clan, one for each member, then U two, Blondie
- 4:57Speaker 1: in Excess, Jane's Addiction, Sean Diddycoe Holmes, and Mariah Carey.
- 5:01Speaker 1: All that together makes forty full episodes for twenty twenty three.
- 5:06Speaker 1: For twenty twenty four, we're planning roughly the same amount
- 5:10Speaker 1: of output, and we're doing it a little different. As
- 5:15Speaker 1: I've been teasing, we're going to be talking about other
- 5:19Speaker 1: artists who aren't just musicians, and we're going to be
- 5:22Speaker 1: releasing those artists in the Disgraceland feed. I'll have more
- 5:26Speaker 1: on this as we continue to talk here in these
- 5:29Speaker 1: bar But we're combining, we're combining our efforts with bad
- 5:34Speaker 1: Lands in Disgraceland. It's you know, it doesn't matter what
- 5:38Speaker 1: the medium is, it doesn't matter what the vertical is,
- 5:40Speaker 1: it doesn't matter what form of art we're talking about
- 5:43Speaker 1: or what section of life we're talking about. Disgrace is
- 5:46Speaker 1: a disgrace, is a disgrace. What we really talk about
- 5:49Speaker 1: here is interesting people, the lives of extraordinary artists, and
- 5:54Speaker 1: the transgressions that have fueled them, that have crushed them,
- 5:58Speaker 1: that have served as incredible obstacles for them to navigate
- 6:02Speaker 1: around with incredible drama. That's really what we do here.
- 6:07Speaker 1: So as I grow as a storyteller, as a writer,
- 6:11Speaker 1: and as you guys grow as listeners and as part
- 6:14Speaker 1: of this community, and we engage in this feedback every week,
- 6:18Speaker 1: I think we should be able to talk about artists
- 6:22Speaker 1: who might not be from a rock and roll band
- 6:26Speaker 1: or from the rock and roll the world of the
- 6:29Speaker 1: music industry, but are pretty fucking rock and roll. Anthony
- 6:33Speaker 1: Bourdin perfect example, about as rock and roll as you get. Guy,
- 6:36Speaker 1: never played an instrument, guy never made a record, but
- 6:39Speaker 1: just a fascinating subject that I've been dying to talk
- 6:41Speaker 1: about forever. Doesn't really fit into bad lands or disgraceland.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And that got me thinking, well, shit, man, it's all disgraceful, right,
- 6:50Speaker 1: Andy Warhol, same thing, Steve McQueen. Okay, you see where
- 6:54Speaker 1: I'm going with this. Hunter S. Thompson, you know where
- 6:56Speaker 1: I'm going, all right? So these are the episodes we
- 6:58Speaker 1: have planned for next year so far. Serge Gainsburg, Stu
- 7:03Speaker 1: Suckcliffe from The Beatles. This will be chapter nine in
- 7:06Speaker 1: our Beatles series. And I don't know. I think this
- 7:08Speaker 1: is it maybe a maybe a peak best episode. I
- 7:12Speaker 1: doubt it, but I digress. I let me keep going here.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Number one Serge Gainsburg, Stu Suckcliffe, Scott Wiland from Stone Table,
- 7:20Speaker 1: Pilots The Clash, Anthony Bourdin, like I mentioned, Andy Warhol,
- 7:25Speaker 1: Peter Tosh, Steve McQueen, Public Enemy, Hunter s Thompson, Lane
- 7:30Speaker 1: Staley from Alison Chains, Kobe Bryant, Basquatch, Garth Brooks, william
- 7:36Speaker 1: S Burrows, Chris Cornell, Bob Dylan r Kelly, jose Canseco,
- 7:43Speaker 1: Bobby brown Waylon Jennings. And that's just the first half
- 7:47Speaker 1: of the year. We got a bead on who we're
- 7:49Speaker 1: doing for the second half of the year. Heard a
- 7:52Speaker 1: lot of suggestions from you guys. This is your last
- 7:55Speaker 1: chance to get these suggestions in for the calendar year
- 7:57Speaker 1: twenty twenty four six one seven, nine oh six, six
- 8:02Speaker 1: six three eight, Send me a text, send me a voicemail.
- 8:05Speaker 1: You guys are great with the suggestions, but everything I
- 8:08Speaker 1: just mentioned to you, All of those names, those are
- 8:11Speaker 1: already being produced right now. A lot of them are
- 8:13Speaker 1: already done. They're already in the can, They're already ready
- 8:16Speaker 1: to go writing the Anthony Board an episode as we
- 8:19Speaker 1: speak this week. But like I said, that was twenty
- 8:22Speaker 1: one episodes that I just laid out for you for
- 8:24Speaker 1: twenty twenty four that we have planned already, and we're
- 8:27Speaker 1: gonna be doing about that same amount for the second
- 8:29Speaker 1: half of the year. So we have some empty slots.
- 8:31Speaker 1: We have a good idea on who we want to cover. Uh,
- 8:34Speaker 1: but just now's the time. Six one seven nine oh
- 8:37Speaker 1: six six six three eight. Uh. For those of you
- 8:41Speaker 1: who are gonna your hair is gonna light on fire.
- 8:43Speaker 1: You're gonna spontaneously combust because you haven't heard me say
- 8:47Speaker 1: the band name van Halen. Don't worry. It's in the hopper.
- 8:51Speaker 1: It's done. Actually, I don't know why it's not on
- 8:53Speaker 1: this list. Uh, probably because we're not releasing it until
- 8:55Speaker 1: the second half of the year. But don't worry. Van
- 8:58Speaker 1: Halen's coming all right. Also, I want to know other
- 9:02Speaker 1: artists who aren't musicians that you want to hear of.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Big Big, The Bigger the name the better. Okay. I
- 9:09Speaker 1: see jose Canseco on here and my mind goes to
- 9:11Speaker 1: Lenny Diister and I go, you know, no, nos, who
- 9:13Speaker 1: the fuck Lenny Diister is except for me and my
- 9:15Speaker 1: stupid friends. So I don't know. I don't think that's
- 9:18Speaker 1: not quite the type of name I'm thinking of. Right,
- 9:20Speaker 1: we want bigger names, Okay, even I look, I look
- 9:23Speaker 1: on this list and I look at someone like William
- 9:25Speaker 1: S Burrows and Hunter S. Thompson. I know who those
- 9:27Speaker 1: guys are, the greats. They're giants in my world. But
- 9:31Speaker 1: I want big names. I want big crimes. Let me
- 9:34Speaker 1: know what you guys want to hear. Six one seven
- 9:37Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight. Also, before I forget,
- 9:42Speaker 1: we have a rewind episode from our archive coming to
- 9:45Speaker 1: you this Friday. This is our Johnny Cash. Episode involves crash, cadillacs,
- 9:50Speaker 1: drug smuggling, speed of course, tranquilizers of course, beer, and
- 9:54Speaker 1: oh yeah, burning down a national forest. So if you
- 9:57Speaker 1: have not heard this Johnny Cash episode, if you were
- 9:59Speaker 1: in New to Disgraceland, I suggest you stick around and
- 10:04Speaker 1: you check this one out. You're not going to want
- 10:06Speaker 1: to miss it, all right. Six one seven nine oh
- 10:08Speaker 1: six six six three eight to get your requests in
- 10:10Speaker 1: on who you want to hear voicemail text, also at
- 10:14Speaker 1: disgracelam pod on Instagram, on Twitter, on TikTok, YouTube, Facebook,
- 10:21Speaker 1: X what am I forgetting? I'm everywhere disgrace lampod at
- 10:23Speaker 1: gmail dot com on email, and speaking of which, let's
- 10:26Speaker 1: check out this email from April Woodhall right, subject Dean
- 10:30Speaker 1: Martin exclamation point Jake. I was delighted to hear you
- 10:33Speaker 1: sing the praises of Dean Martin. Check out a movie
- 10:35Speaker 1: called Kiss Me Stupid where he plays himself. There is
- 10:38Speaker 1: no one cooler. Thank you for all you do and
- 10:41Speaker 1: especially your great energy. Happy New Year, Well, happy New
- 10:43Speaker 1: Year to you, April. I agree there was no one cooler.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Elvis agreed to. All right, let's check out one. Let's
- 10:49Speaker 1: do one more, and one more and one more. I
- 10:51Speaker 1: know I gotta be quick here, Let's do one more here.
- 10:52Speaker 1: This one is from Jeff Cox, subject Taylor Mitchell. Okay,
- 10:57Speaker 1: we haven't done an episode on Taylor Mitchell, but I
- 10:58Speaker 1: did do a little Instagram video about this folk singer
- 11:01Speaker 1: from Canada who was unfortunately killed on a hike attacked
- 11:07Speaker 1: by wild coyotes and eaten lives. Brutal, brutal, brutal story.
- 11:12Speaker 1: This comes from like I said, Jeff Cox subject Taylor
- 11:16Speaker 1: Mitchell message Hello. I'm a huge fan of all your podcasts,
- 11:19Speaker 1: and Disgraceland is my first recommendation to people who ask
- 11:22Speaker 1: for a podcast to listen to, then I tell them
- 11:25Speaker 1: to listen to all the other ones that you do.
- 11:26Speaker 1: I live in Cape Breton where Taylor was killed. She
- 11:29Speaker 1: was killed in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. There's
- 11:31Speaker 1: a paved road called the Cabot Trail you can drive
- 11:34Speaker 1: on through the park. There are lots of trails and
- 11:36Speaker 1: beaches and such off the main road. It was one
- 11:38Speaker 1: of these trails, called the Skyline Trail that she was attacked.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I've walked that trail many times and came face to
- 11:44Speaker 1: face with a moose a couple of times, so you
- 11:46Speaker 1: can get within fifteen to twenty feet of them sometimes.
- 11:48Speaker 1: The views and foliage are amazing. If you have any
- 11:51Speaker 1: questions about the area, I would be honored to help.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Thank you from Jeff Well, Jeff, thanks for that email.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Pretty wild that you're still walking that same path where
- 11:59Speaker 1: that that that death happened. That's crazy. Be careful. All right, guys,
- 12:05Speaker 1: we're gonna take a quick break. We'll be back in
- 12:07Speaker 1: a flash with your texts and your voicemails. All right,
- 12:32Speaker 1: we are back, and I answer some texts here, This
- 12:34Speaker 1: one from the seven six to soh hey, just listen
- 12:36Speaker 1: to the Beach Boys episodes. Then the bonus. So glad
- 12:39Speaker 1: you had been enlightened to the bullshit that is Helter
- 12:41Speaker 1: Skelter and the genius of Chaos. The book Tom O'Neill,
- 12:45Speaker 1: that's the author of Chaos that the seven six to
- 12:48Speaker 1: so was talking about was on Joe Rogan. Go to
- 12:51Speaker 1: YouTube and search. I know where to find the Joe
- 12:53Speaker 1: Rogan podcast, but I appreciate it. Seven six seven six
- 12:55Speaker 1: zero goes on to say he's working on book two
- 12:57Speaker 1: and there will be a Netflix stock. I'm aware of that.
- 13:00Speaker 1: With Errol Mars, I know this. I suggest you read
- 13:02Speaker 1: The Manson File by Nikolas Shrek to really have your
- 13:05Speaker 1: mind blown about the Manson stuff, especially the cover up
- 13:08Speaker 1: and the sham that the trial was all right. Happy
- 13:11Speaker 1: to hear that there's other people out there in the
- 13:13Speaker 1: world like myself who are hip to the real Helter
- 13:17Speaker 1: Skelter story. I was not hip to it. When we
- 13:21Speaker 1: produce those Beach Boys episodes. I was still on that
- 13:24Speaker 1: Helter Skelter train, But can you blame me? Can you?
- 13:27Speaker 1: Can you blame me? Don't blame me. It wasn't until
- 13:29Speaker 1: I read Chaos, all right? Go read Chaos. Go read
- 13:34Speaker 1: Chaos all right? This one from the four one to zero, right, Sin.
- 13:37Speaker 1: So whatever you decide about combining bad Lands and disgraceland
- 13:40Speaker 1: will be fine. I listened no matter what, But having
- 13:42Speaker 1: to keep track of fewer podcasts would be great. What
- 13:45Speaker 1: were you saying about Chaos versus Helter Skelter. It really
- 13:48Speaker 1: hits on exactly what you do for us. You get
- 13:50Speaker 1: the real story about these artists out there in a
- 13:53Speaker 1: way that is not only entertaining, but based on facts
- 13:55Speaker 1: and evidence. No one needs to hear the urban legends
- 13:58Speaker 1: again about how Mama cast choked on a ham sandwich,
- 14:00Speaker 1: or that Michael Hutchins accidentally died during autoerotic asphyxiation. Asphyxiation,
- 14:05Speaker 1: excuse me. Even when the storytelling styles from a more
- 14:08Speaker 1: creative point of view, the facts are real. That's probably
- 14:10Speaker 1: the thing I most appreciate in all these stories that
- 14:12Speaker 1: you tell. These people may be famous, but they are human. Well,
- 14:15Speaker 1: thank you for one zero. I really appreciate that, and
- 14:18Speaker 1: that's kind of how I'm thinking about it as well.
- 14:20Speaker 1: They're all just human stories, and we're here to tell
- 14:22Speaker 1: them in the most entertaining and dramatic way possible using
- 14:26Speaker 1: this exciting, coolest shit medium known as podcasting. Stoked that
- 14:31Speaker 1: you're down with combining the feeds. I'll have more on
- 14:33Speaker 1: that in the coming weeks. The five four to one writes,
- 14:37Speaker 1: in just listening to yesterday's after party, you recommended al
- 14:41Speaker 1: Fonse Mouzon Funky Snakefoot. I've heard that before. I'll have
- 14:44Speaker 1: to search through my dad's album collection because I am
- 14:47Speaker 1: sure I have that album on vinyl. Yes, al Fonse Mouson.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Was that the guy's name? I remember? Funky Snakefoot fucking great?
- 14:55Speaker 1: Also someone I don't know if I talked about it
- 14:58Speaker 1: in an after party, guys, if I was talking about
- 15:01Speaker 1: it on social media or something. Clarence read and I
- 15:05Speaker 1: believe the song is called the Winter. It's a Christmas
- 15:07Speaker 1: song that I got obsessed with. I think that's the
- 15:10Speaker 1: name of it over the last couple of weeks. I
- 15:12Speaker 1: should remember it, and I listened to it enough, but
- 15:14Speaker 1: I drink a lot of bourbon over the break as well.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I can remember the song, and again Clarence read, No,
- 15:19Speaker 1: it was my dad. My dad told me this, and
- 15:21Speaker 1: I was telling him about the song, and uh, my dad,
- 15:26Speaker 1: who knows way more about music than I do, told
- 15:28Speaker 1: me that Clarence Reid is Blowfly, Blowfly. I didn't know that.
- 15:33Speaker 1: You guys know who Blowfly is. Check that out. If
- 15:35Speaker 1: you don't know, check out Blowfly, and then check out
- 15:37Speaker 1: Clarence read. Check out the music. All right. So then
- 15:41Speaker 1: I'm watching boardein because I'm writing this board Aine episode.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I'm doing this research, and I find out that Clarence
- 15:45Speaker 1: read Blowfly is from Florida, which I did not know.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Not that you would care about that, but again, this
- 15:51Speaker 1: guy's just popping up everywhere right now. Check out Clarence
- 15:54Speaker 1: read get back to me. Six one seven nine oh
- 15:56Speaker 1: six six six three eight. Did you have a good
- 15:58Speaker 1: New Year's guys? Did you have a good New Years?
- 16:00Speaker 1: Do you go out to do some fun stuff? Do
- 16:02Speaker 1: you make out when the ball dropped all that? Eight
- 16:05Speaker 1: one four? Rights and hey, Jake, My New Year's Eve
- 16:07Speaker 1: song is ding Dong ding Dong by George Harrison from
- 16:10Speaker 1: The Underrated in my honest opinion album dark Horse, Ring
- 16:14Speaker 1: Out the Old, Ring In the New and as an
- 16:17Speaker 1: added bonus, the video is chock full of George Harrison's
- 16:19Speaker 1: unhinged sense of humor. Love the show, longtime listener, first
- 16:23Speaker 1: time Texter rock and ROLLA thank you, hey one four
- 16:26Speaker 1: appreciate that you know I cannot. I have that record,
- 16:30Speaker 1: but I do not know that song. I don't know it.
- 16:33Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie and pretend I know it. I
- 16:35Speaker 1: don't know it. You can't know every song, not even
- 16:37Speaker 1: every George Harrison song on a you know what some
- 16:41Speaker 1: would say is a seminal George Harrison album. I don't
- 16:44Speaker 1: know it. An album I have, I don't know the song.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I can't think of it eight six two rights and hey, Jake,
- 16:48Speaker 1: I have an idea for an episode Disgrace Slay. An
- 16:50Speaker 1: episode that is Ian Watkins, lead singer of Lost Prophets,
- 16:53Speaker 1: in prison and can't wait to get out so he
- 16:55Speaker 1: can reoffend his crime luring and assaulting young girls age
- 16:59Speaker 1: fourteen with all remorse and a wicked cocaine habit. It's
- 17:02Speaker 1: disgusting by any means, may be too egregious for you
- 17:06Speaker 1: to do. You don't have to look into it. It
- 17:08Speaker 1: also involves a baby at one point on video. Oh
- 17:11Speaker 1: my god. Yeah, that's too much. I can't get in there.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I typically don't do. I don't mess with the kids stuff.
- 17:16Speaker 1: I'm going to make an exception for the r Kelly thing.
- 17:20Speaker 1: That's a different story, entirely not different. It's a expanded
- 17:24Speaker 1: or bigger or deeper. I don't know. I don't know
- 17:25Speaker 1: what the right adjective is, but it's it's it's not
- 17:28Speaker 1: just like, you know whatever. I don't like thinking about it.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I don't like talking about it, and I don't think
- 17:32Speaker 1: if people want to listen to me talk about the
- 17:34Speaker 1: kids stuff. That's always been my take. That's why I
- 17:36Speaker 1: haven't done it. Let's check out this one from the
- 17:39Speaker 1: five to one nine. It's mister Mojo Rising, not rising.
- 17:43Speaker 1: There's no g and Jim Morrison, Dave. Dave's pissed Dave.
- 17:49Speaker 1: We're fucking around here, man, We're not being super literal,
- 17:52Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying four to two four, writes
- 17:54Speaker 1: in Looking forward to twenty twenty four Disgraceland with a
- 17:58Speaker 1: snap of his top pog casts from Spotify, with Disgraceland
- 18:02Speaker 1: in the number one spot, there you go. Six soho
- 18:05Speaker 1: three rights in. Jake showed my kids The Blues Brothers
- 18:08Speaker 1: when they were just six and nine years old. Kind
- 18:10Speaker 1: of a whoops parenting moment. Perhaps, Ah, I don't know,
- 18:16Speaker 1: they might be too young where it doesn't matter, Like
- 18:19Speaker 1: there's a point when your kids are they're young enough
- 18:22Speaker 1: that they don't get the super dirty stuff, but they're
- 18:25Speaker 1: old enough to get the other stuff, If that makes sense.
- 18:27Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. Three oh four rights in,
- 18:30Speaker 1: and I'll leave you with this text. Guys, Disgraceland times
- 18:33Speaker 1: bad Lands equals Jake motherfucking Brennan Land. That's your new title,
- 18:40Speaker 1: so everybody knows it. Don't get no better. Appreciate you
- 18:43Speaker 1: three zho four, but I'm gonna stick with just straight
- 18:46Speaker 1: up Brennan. All right, guys. Six one seven nine oh
- 18:49Speaker 1: six six six three eight. I want to know what
- 18:51Speaker 1: you want to hear in twenty twenty four. All right,
- 18:54Speaker 1: I got twenty more slots give or take to fill
- 18:57Speaker 1: big names. Big let's go beyond music. Let me know
- 19:00Speaker 1: what you're thinking tech six one seven nine oh six
- 19:03Speaker 1: six six three eight. Voicemail, same thing, same number, all right,
- 19:07Speaker 1: Hit me on social at disgrace MPOG and take a
- 19:10Speaker 1: quick break back after this. All right, we are back,
- 19:27Speaker 1: and this is the recommendation's part, the part of the
- 19:30Speaker 1: show where we recommend the things, the music that is
- 19:32Speaker 1: it needs recommending. This is the recommendations part. So over
- 19:35Speaker 1: the break, I was doing a lot of house clean up,
- 19:40Speaker 1: doing a lot of organizing, and uh, while I do
- 19:43Speaker 1: that stuff around the house, anyways, I like to put
- 19:46Speaker 1: on a TV series that just goes deep, that has
- 19:51Speaker 1: a ton of episodes and seasons, and then I've seen
- 19:54Speaker 1: a bunch, uh and just have it playing while I'm
- 19:57Speaker 1: doing my stuff, and then I kind of loosely get
- 20:00Speaker 1: hold into the narrative, but I'm not really paying attention,
- 20:03Speaker 1: but there's enough of the story going on in the
- 20:05Speaker 1: background to keep me semi interested and not bored with
- 20:11Speaker 1: the task that I'm having to do. But it's not
- 20:13Speaker 1: distracting me either, you see what I'm saying. So good
- 20:16Speaker 1: shows for this have been in my experience in the past.
- 20:20Speaker 1: The Wire has been a great one, mad Men another one.
- 20:25Speaker 1: So over the break, you know, it's been a while.
- 20:28Speaker 1: I was a sopranos. I had to do it. I
- 20:31Speaker 1: don't know, I just had the Sopranos. I didn't started
- 20:33Speaker 1: at season one. I started around season four or five
- 20:36Speaker 1: or something like that. I think it was season five,
- 20:39Speaker 1: basically because season six. I wasn't a big fan of
- 20:42Speaker 1: season six, though I did love the final episode that
- 20:45Speaker 1: everyone else hated, and not just to be a contrarian,
- 20:47Speaker 1: I really loved it when it first hit. But anyways,
- 20:51Speaker 1: I didn't like the whole season. I hated that whole
- 20:54Speaker 1: part with Tony. Spoiler alert, Okay, just letting you know.
- 20:57Speaker 1: If you haven't seen The Sopranos, it's been like twenty
- 20:59Speaker 1: fucking years, there's gonna be some spoilers. Okay. I didn't
- 21:02Speaker 1: like the part where Tony gets shot and he ends
- 21:05Speaker 1: up in Costa Mesa or wherever, wherever David Jase's idea
- 21:09Speaker 1: of purgatory is in America. I didn't like that whole storyline,
- 21:13Speaker 1: and I wanted to rewatch it sort of kind of
- 21:16Speaker 1: not really and see if it if it hit me
- 21:18Speaker 1: in any way, And of course it did, and of
- 21:20Speaker 1: course I like it. I love it now actually, But
- 21:24Speaker 1: it also the thing. The reason I'm telling you all
- 21:26Speaker 1: this is because there's this incredible scene where Christopher gets
- 21:31Speaker 1: gets high on heroin and gets back into junk and
- 21:35Speaker 1: and he's he's outdoors at this Italian festival at night
- 21:39Speaker 1: after it's closed down, and uh, it's it's a feast,
- 21:43Speaker 1: one of those you know, classic city feasts that the
- 21:47Speaker 1: Italians do. And he's lying back on the bench and
- 21:50Speaker 1: he's smoking a cigarette and he's wasted, and there's this
- 21:56Speaker 1: song playing and it's so good and it's Fred Neils
- 21:59Speaker 1: the Dolphins, and this song is just amazing. I've talked
- 22:04Speaker 1: about this song before to you guys, I believe in
- 22:07Speaker 1: some capacity. And then I forgot about it, loved that
- 22:11Speaker 1: I was reminded of it again from the sopranos, and
- 22:16Speaker 1: I was like, I'm gonna I'm gonna look into Fred Neil.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I'm going to figure this guy out, see what else
- 22:20Speaker 1: is out there. And then I thought, no, I'm not.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I'm going to ask the discos. I'm going to ask
- 22:23Speaker 1: the Disgraceland listeners. I'm going to ask the Disgraceland community
- 22:26Speaker 1: what they know about Fred Neil. So whoever among you
- 22:29Speaker 1: knows anything about Fred Neil, has other Fred Neil music
- 22:32Speaker 1: you can recommend to me. Hit me back six one
- 22:35Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight. Let's talk
- 22:39Speaker 1: about this week's rewind episode in the meantime of Johnny Cash.
- 22:44Speaker 1: This episode is uh. It's one of my favorite Disgraceland episodes.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I remember when we released it back in twenty nineteen.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I believe, UH, it pissed a lot of people off
- 22:56Speaker 1: because it was critical of Johnny Cash. And Johnny Cash
- 22:59Speaker 1: fans are, you know, they like to stand up on
- 23:03Speaker 1: their front foot, and you know, they like to yell
- 23:05Speaker 1: or something. I don't know, but I don't really understand
- 23:08Speaker 1: why I pissed people off. I think it was just
- 23:09Speaker 1: some people don't like their artists to be criticized. And
- 23:13Speaker 1: you know me, none of these guys, as much as
- 23:15Speaker 1: I love them or girls, are beyond criticism. But I
- 23:20Speaker 1: also remember that this episode was the first time, I
- 23:24Speaker 1: think I think it was the first time I tried
- 23:26Speaker 1: collaborating with another writer and having them write an episode
- 23:31Speaker 1: of Disgraceland, and it did not go well for either
- 23:35Speaker 1: of us. We tried. It just didn't work, and I
- 23:38Speaker 1: remembered it was coming up on the deadline and I
- 23:42Speaker 1: had to scrap the entire episode and write it all
- 23:47Speaker 1: over myself start to finish. Typically, it takes me five
- 23:51Speaker 1: days to write an episode after I've done the research.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I thankfully had done the research because I was, like
- 23:57Speaker 1: I said, collaborating, but I hadn't done any of the writing.
- 24:00Speaker 1: And then I remember I just sat down in the
- 24:02Speaker 1: morning and I was like, I'm just fucking doing this.
- 24:04Speaker 1: I'm finishing this all five thousand words or whatever it is,
- 24:07Speaker 1: edited the whole thing, and it took me something like
- 24:10Speaker 1: seventeen hours to get done. Finally got it done, finally
- 24:13Speaker 1: got it out. There had no idea if it was
- 24:14Speaker 1: good or bad. I went back and listened to it
- 24:17Speaker 1: months later, decided it was good. But I had such poor, poor,
- 24:22Speaker 1: such a poor experience producing it, that it just it's
- 24:26Speaker 1: just one of those episodes that fell flat for me
- 24:28Speaker 1: for a lot of years. But but I've listened to
- 24:31Speaker 1: it recently and I think it's pretty damn good and
- 24:34Speaker 1: I think you're gonna love it. So for a little
- 24:36Speaker 1: context on this Johnny Cash episode, it was around this time,
- 24:38Speaker 1: actually early January, January thirteenth to be exact. Back in
- 24:42Speaker 1: nineteen sixty eight that Johnny Cash made history by performing
- 24:46Speaker 1: a show for inmates at Fulsome State prison. He made
- 24:49Speaker 1: the record this is in Fulsome, California. The show is recorded.
- 24:52Speaker 1: The record was released on Columbia Records in May of
- 24:55Speaker 1: that same year. It's a big, huge part of the story.
- 24:59Speaker 1: The album's first single, Folsom Prison Blues, charted on the
- 25:02Speaker 1: Billboard one hundred and on the Country charts. It's just
- 25:05Speaker 1: a big deal, big big big big big big big
- 25:08Speaker 1: big big deal at the time, back when it was
- 25:10Speaker 1: first release. But but a week later, Robert F. Kennedy
- 25:14Speaker 1: was assassinated and radio stations stopped playing the song because
- 25:18Speaker 1: of the famous line, I shot a man in Reno
- 25:21Speaker 1: just to watch him die. Columbia Records demanded that the
- 25:24Speaker 1: single be remixed to remove that line. Johnny Cash protested,
- 25:28Speaker 1: but Columbia won the argument. It was remixed, the line
- 25:32Speaker 1: was cut, re released, and then of course it charted
- 25:36Speaker 1: even higher. Crazy Story six one seven nine oh six
- 25:40Speaker 1: six six three eight. Your favorite Johnny Cash music? What
- 25:44Speaker 1: is it? It's a huge well to dig from, all right.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Do you like the early Sun Records stuff. Do you
- 25:50Speaker 1: like the later Columbia stuff when he finally found his way?
- 25:53Speaker 1: Do you like the I don't know? Do you like
- 25:55Speaker 1: the gospel stuff? Do you like the the later Rick
- 25:58Speaker 1: Rubin stuff? What's your favorite Johnny Cash Music six one
- 26:00Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight voicemail text,
- 26:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a quick break back and flash. All right,
