Latest / Rethinking Weight Loss with Eli Luft / 8 Things To Avoid On Semaglutide (Or It Stops Working)
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: There are eight foods and eating habits I'd stay away from while you're on semaglutide.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Whether you know it as Ozempic, Wagovi, or something else.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Most of them are ordinary things you probably already eat or do every week, but they can make the medication harder to tolerate or make your weight loss stall.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And the frustrating part is most people never realize they are the problem.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: I'm Eli Luft, a physician associate at Revis Medical Weight Loss.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna walk you through the eight things I'd avoid if you want to feel better on semaglutide and lose weight faster.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And the last one came from a patient who had been stuck for three months, changed this one thing, and lost 5.6 pounds that next week.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: The amazing thing about this medication is that it trains you into eating better.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: It does this by giving you a natural aversion to certain foods.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: Most people find out which foods the hard way, but I'm gonna give you the top eight so you don't have to.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Number one is fried and greasy foods, French fries, mayonnaise, and the stuff that leaves your fingers shiny.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Nausea on these shots gets treated like it's random, like you got unlucky with a side effect.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: A lot of the time it's the oil.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Greasy food is one of the main things that'll make somebody nauseous on this medication.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And if it happens to you twice, you'll probably make the connection yourself.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: For a salad, skip the seizure dressing, go lighter, and you'll feel the difference.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Number two is letting carbs take protein's place.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Here's what happens.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: A few weeks in, you develop this protein aversion.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: The idea of eating chicken, steak, fish makes you feel queasy.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: But crackers are fine, toast is fine, simple and easily digestible carbs are really what you feel like eating.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Four of the major obesity nutrition societies put out a joint advisory on this in 2025.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: They said getting enough protein on these medications is hard.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not telling you carbs are the enemy.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: You'll hear me say later in this video that carbs and fat are both just energy, and that's true.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: The problem isn't the bread or the crackers on this medication, it's that you have a limited space and you're gonna want to prioritize protein.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Adequate protein along with resistance training is what protects your muscle and your metabolism.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: So eat the protein first before the rice and before the bread.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Number three is going way too long without eating.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: This one's a trap because semaglutide takes your hunger away, so skipping lunch feels easy.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Then it's four in the afternoon and people are queasy and blaming the shot.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Going all day on nothing will do that by itself.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Eat something, preferably protein, even when you don't feel like it.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Number four is sweets you have every single night.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Say it's three Oreos after dinner, you've done it for 20 years, you're not hungry anymore, but the habit doesn't care about that.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: For a lot of people, semaglutide changes how things taste.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: They take a bite, something's different about it, and they put it down.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: So you just kick the Oreo habit.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Other people push right through and eat it anyway, and that's where it can cost you because for some people, a big load of sugar and fat can trigger nausea and or diarrhea.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Number five is keto.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: People tell me all the time they're gonna do keto while they're on this medication, and I'd skip it.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Keto is a high fat diet, and you just heard what fat does to you on this medication.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Eating that much fat on this is hard to pull off, and almost nobody stays on keto for long anyway.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Carbs and fat are just both energy.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Your body runs on either one, so if you cut your sugar down, but your fat goes way up, you didn't take any energy away.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: You actually added it.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: I had a patient come in five pounds heavier than the last visit, telling me that they were doing keto.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: So I asked, what were they eating?
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: They told me they were eating a block of cheese a day.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: There's no carbs in it, that's true, but there's hundreds of grams of fat in a block of cheese.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: There's no burning that off in a week.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: I couldn't believe they only gained five pounds.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Keto also isn't what it used to be.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: When it first got popular, it was working for people because there was no such thing as keto food.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: You cook the chicken yourself, you cut up the vegetables yourself.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Now you can say you're keto and never cook anything.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Keto chips, keto cereal, keto everything.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: No sugar in it, fine, but there's an enormous amount of fat in all of it.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly the load your body can't keep up with.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And most people telling me they're doing keto aren't in ketosis at all.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Real keto is strict.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Have pizza once and you could be knocked out of it for three days.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: And by then there's another slip.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: So they're carrying all the fat of that diet and getting none of what it's supposed to do.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: If you're in Maryland, Virginia, or Florida, there's a link in the description to book your first visit with us.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: You'll see exactly what's open and pick a time that fits your schedule so it's fast and simple.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Number six is alcohol.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Alcohol is a big one on semaglutide, especially.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: What I hear from most patients is that the desire for it goes away on its own.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: They'll babysit one glass all night at a party or have a sip of wine at dinner and be done with it.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: For some, it doesn't sit right or taste different, so they just let it go.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: A lot of them are happy about it, but some do miss it.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And if you're drinking the way you always drank on semaglutide, you're the one most likely gonna end up feeling sick.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Number seven is pushing past that I'm full feeling.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: You get hungry.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Yes, you will still feel hunger.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Very hard to totally eliminate the hunger signal.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: The key that the medication is working is that you get full faster.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: So you serve yourself a plate, same portion as usual, you get that signal in your brain to stop eating, and you feel like you just started and it's tasty.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: So, as usual, you push past that full feeling, bam, nausea.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: You will regret not listening to your body.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: The medication will retrain you to listen.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Next meal, you serve yourself less food because now you're a little more experienced.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: You get that full feeling, there's a few bites left on your plate, and you know, groceries are expensive, you don't want to be wasteful.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: At the same time, it's not a lot of food worth saving.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: You're not sure you want to dirty the Tupperware and then have more dishes later.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: So you eat those last two bites, bam, nausea.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Another meal.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Now you're smarter.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Wherever you are in that meal, if that signal says stop, you put your utensils down and you slide the food away and say, I don't care what happens to this food, just please take it away.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Number eight is what's in your coffee.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: One patient told me she'd been stuck for three months at the same weight.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: So I went through her diet and it was fine.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Nothing crazy in there.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: And she's on semi-glutide, so how much of it is she even eating?
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: Then I asked her about her coffee and how she puts her creamer in there.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And I said, Is this how you pour your creamer?
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's a good color.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And she said, Yeah, that's exactly how I pour my creamer.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: So I said, Maybe you're putting in like 20 servings of creamer in your coffee.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: I said, just look at the back of the package, it'll tell you, like, do two tablespoons.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: So I said, if you can drink it black, drink it black.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, just do the two tablespoons and let's see how you do.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: The following week, she was down 5.6 pounds.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: That's one week after three months of being completely stuck.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: She was already down 30 or 40 pounds before she got stuck, which tells you how strong this medication is.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Three months of nothing.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: And the reason was sitting in her coffee cup.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: If you start off every morning with a birthday cake for breakfast, three or four slices of it, it gets very hard to lose weight.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: That's what the coffee was.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: So tonight, go read the back of whatever you put in your coffee and measure two tablespoons into the cup one time so you know what it looks like.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Most people have never seen it.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Subscribe while you're here so you don't miss the next one.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Every one of these is something you can change without rebuilding the way you eat the rest of the week.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: That's what keeps people comfortable on semaglutide long enough to hit their goal away.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: See you in the next one.
