- 0:00Welcome to Indie Film Podcast. I'm Vic.
- 0:03And I am Chuck. This week we're recording a
- 0:05brief message to inform our listeners that for the month of
- 0:08July, we will be taking a brief summer break.
- 0:11And by break, we mean every indie film project records in
- 0:15the summer. So we're going to be doing that.
- 0:18Yes, we'll be busy, but we will be returning on July 31st with a
- 0:21series about how as micro budget film makers, we often wear too
- 0:25many hats. In the meantime, to celebrate
- 0:29the upcoming holiday, America's Independence Day, also known as
- 0:33her birthday, we're going to share some fun facts about
- 0:36patriotic films. I'm going to go first, so Will
- 0:41Smith. He was the star of the 1996
- 0:45blockbuster Independence Day. He was nominated for three Best
- 0:49Acting Academy Awards and finally won an Oscar in the year
- 0:532022. During that same award ceremony,
- 0:58host Chris Rock was assaulted by an audience member.
- 1:03You know, I actually watched that.
- 1:05That was the first and last time I ever watched the Oscars.
- 1:08Oh, right on. I I did not see that one live.
- 1:10And I don't usually watch the Oscars because I think they're
- 1:13kind of pretentious. Another thing I want to mention
- 1:15to our listeners is there's construction going on outside my
- 1:18house. So if you hear some weird
- 1:20sounds, that's that's what that is.
- 1:22It's summertime and yard work is happening.
- 1:24We have no other answers for you.
- 1:26We could have thrown in an establishing shot.
- 1:29Yeah, that would have helped. To show you all the yard work
- 1:31that's happening now. Yeah, trees getting chopped down
- 1:33very nearby. So if you hear that, sorry about
- 1:35that, but I'll try to fix it in post because that's what we do
- 1:37sometimes. Anyway, I think we were bashing
- 1:40Will talking about Will Smith. Yes, continue along the Will
- 1:43Smith. So subject before Will Smith
- 1:47lost some of his 4th of July darling status, as some people
- 1:52would call it, that title actually went to Tom Cruise.
- 1:56Oh yeah, not just because of his role in Top Gun.
- 1:59Yes, very, very patriotic film fair and a 4th of July staple at
- 2:04most people's houses. Yes, he was actually nominated
- 2:09for an Oscar for the very first time for his role in Born on the
- 2:134th of July in 1989. Wow.
- 2:15That was a while ago. Yeah, but that was his first
- 2:17Oscar nomination, and he's never actually won an Oscar.
- 2:22I think proves that a whole lot of money can buy you a lot in
- 2:25the Church of Scientology, but not so much for the Academy.
- 2:29Oh. There, you can't pay them off, I
- 2:30guess. So I bet you can, just maybe not
- 2:33with money. Right on.
- 2:34Well, let's talk about Marvel icon Captain America.
- 2:38He has had four feature films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
- 2:43also abbreviated MCU. Unfortunately, none of the four
- 2:48Captain America films were abbreviated.
- 2:51So mean, do you even know Steve Rogers birthday?
- 2:55Is it July 4th? Yes, it is.
- 2:58Oh, OK, that's kind of coincidental.
- 3:00Yeah, I'm sure the writers of the comic had no thoughts on
- 3:04that when they gave it to him. Oh, I didn't know that that was
- 3:06the name of Captain America's alter ego.
- 3:09I thought that was the name of the actor that played Captain.
- 3:11America. No, that would be Chris Evans.
- 3:13I'm just not a fan of Captain America.
- 3:16Love Captain America. Or Chris Evans, apparently.
- 3:18I love Chris Evans too, I love him as the Human Torch even he
- 3:21was delightful. But I also enjoy when things
- 3:24explode. But that's for later this
- 3:26episode when we get to pyrotechnics.
- 3:28Nice. So I do think it's time that we
- 3:31chat real numbers because everyone on the Internet loves
- 3:36it when we give really specific numbers and I personally cannot
- 3:40wait to be on record saying a specific fact and then
- 3:43immediately have Internet trolls tell me how wrong I am.
- 3:46I'm pretty I'm pretty stoked on it so I thought it would be
- 3:51worth sharing. The highest grossing movie with
- 3:53a 4th of July opening weekend goes to and this one I didn't
- 3:59see coming. Minions.
- 4:01The rise of Gru. Classic. 120 a $123 million in
- 4:072022. Nice.
- 4:08Yeah, that was ridiculously impressive.
- 4:11I do think it was kind of boosted by the fact that it was
- 4:16July 1st, was Friday, was its technical opening day, but then
- 4:20because Monday was July 4th and was the holiday, it technically
- 4:23gave it a four day opening weekend.
- 4:25So that kind of boosted the numbers. 4th of July is
- 4:28apparently always a box office. Box office top five.
- 4:32I didn't know that either, but I think that having those four
- 4:35days kind of boosted it a little bit, maybe cheating the numbers
- 4:38just slightly, but technically it has the record.
- 4:42Other popular contenders War of the worlds, Transformers, Dark
- 4:45side of the moon, Spider Man 2 shout out and love to Toby
- 4:48forever and. Tobey Maguire.
- 4:51I believe. Most famous bad actor in.
- 4:55Hollywood so mean Tobey Maguire. Just saying.
- 4:59So I think technically the highest grossing film ever on a
- 5:06single 4th of July day unfortunately does go to
- 5:10Transformers Dark of the Moon, but I refuse to give that film
- 5:14credit for anything because it's terrible.
- 5:19Right on. Let's talk about Michael Bay,
- 5:21actually. So, 4th of July, I'm guessing.
- 5:24You can correct me if I'm wrong on the Internet.
- 5:26I'm guessing that 4th of July weekend is huge box office draw
- 5:30historically because theaters were one of the few places to
- 5:34have air conditioning when they were early adopters of the air
- 5:36conditioning. So in the summertime, a lot of
- 5:38people would go cool off in the movie theater, and I think that
- 5:41just kind of started a trend. And I think it makes sense that
- 5:44a kids movie or at least APG 13 rating on a movie would continue
- 5:48to excel because it's summer break, the kids are going to
- 5:52have it off so you can go do something as a family.
- 5:55I haven't seen that Minions movie.
- 5:57I think I watched the first one and I didn't care for it, but
- 6:01nothing. Let's get back to Michael Bay.
- 6:03Oh right, I want to get back to Michael Bay because Michael
- 6:06Bay's 2001 film Pearl Harbor was riddled with historical
- 6:11inaccuracies, such as using the incorrect planes for flashbacks
- 6:15to the 1920s, actors smoking Marlboro Lights 3 decades prior
- 6:20to their release, substituting Korean War vehicles for jeeps,
- 6:24Inaccurate paint on warships, not war shits.
- 6:28War ships. I mean both.
- 6:29When the paint's that wrong, yeah.
- 6:31Exactly. The list goes on and on, but in
- 6:35spite of the liberties taken in this famous historical movie, it
- 6:39was still too long and incredibly boring.
- 6:42That's. The best insight for that movie?
- 6:46Yeah, delightful. Just a little trivia fact for
- 6:49you. But but Michael.
- 6:50Bay's movies can be boring. On movies that were too long or
- 6:54too boring. Back to Independence Day.
- 6:56OK. Oh, kid, I actually liked
- 6:58Independence Day. Yeah, it's just silly and fun.
- 7:00But yeah, come on, those are the best part of summer.
- 7:04Anyway, If it's not going to be a big exploding movie, I at
- 7:07least need a Fast and Furious new release to come out.
- 7:10But the movie Independence Day actually was almost called
- 7:15Doomsday. I do remember this factoid.
- 7:18I did not know this. Apparently the studio was really
- 7:21excited about calling it doomsday, but the creative team
- 7:24behind it really wanted it to be called Independence Day.
- 7:27So they rushed the filming of the not the director, the
- 7:31president, president director. They're about the same.
- 7:34The president's speech of this is our Independence Day.
- 7:37They rushed that and filmed it super early so that they could
- 7:40basically force and strong arm the studio into saying Nope not
- 7:43doomsday, it's Independence Day now, which I thought was kind of
- 7:46cool. Nice, that was a good way to get
- 7:48their name that they wanted. That's.
- 7:50What they wanted. You had to get a titular line in
- 7:52there. You got to shove it in quick.
- 7:53I love it when they save the title in the movie.
- 7:56Me too. Me too.
- 7:58So let's talk about films that take place on 4th of July.
- 8:02Yes, the 1975 Steven Spielberg thriller Jaws tells the tale of
- 8:09a tourist beach town which continues their 4th of July
- 8:12activities despite the danger of great white shark attacks.
- 8:17Last year on July 4th, 2024, there were four shark attacks in
- 8:23Texas and Florida. You can look it up online.
- 8:25Check it out. Don't worry, they will.
- 8:27However, authorities were unable to connect the four tasks, the
- 8:31four attacks with the Oscar winning film, so there was no
- 8:35connection between Jaws. I wonder if it's like shark
- 8:38attacks. It's not a correlation or a
- 8:39causation thing though, right? Like was it because it was the
- 8:434th of July and the sharks were angrier?
- 8:45Or was it because it was the 4th of July so more people were
- 8:48there so the odds of an attack went up?
- 8:50They were all swimming around on the beach probably.
- 8:52I don't know, I don't know. So there were there were four
- 8:54attacks last year on 4th of July.
- 8:55So be careful out there. If you're near large bodies of
- 8:58water on 4th of July, just keep keep keep yourself safe.
- 9:02Keep yourself safe, but also remember shark attacks are not
- 9:05actually that common. More people die in selfie
- 9:07related accidents than shark attacks every year.
- 9:09How many people die in selfie related shark attacks?
- 9:13I just when the shark is trying to take a selfie and you get in
- 9:17its way because I assume their egos would not handle that well.
- 9:20I don't know. I don't follow very many sharks
- 9:22on social media so I don't know what the statistics are there.
- 9:24We should start OK as promised, the pyrotechnic side of things
- 9:28because my favorite part of Independence Day is getting to
- 9:30blow things up. Of course it is.
- 9:33So I think some mentions of fireworks and their appearances
- 9:38in film is very important. So I'd like to cover 3 big items
- 9:43first. The first appearance of
- 9:44fireworks in film, which the Internet did not provide me
- 9:49detailed answers on, so I'm a little upset about it, but it's
- 9:52fine. The first, probably first one is
- 9:57the fireworks display. It's an 1899 film from James
- 10:02William James Williamson, so supposedly this exists.
- 10:08It was an experimental short, and it was just him messing
- 10:11around with ways to capture fireworks on film and then going
- 10:16in, doing some hand painting on the film itself to actually get
- 10:20some color in there and just him playing around and having fun
- 10:23with it. And I think that's really cool.
- 10:25I could only find one source that said this exists and it's
- 10:28real. OK, so we don't know for sure.
- 10:301899, though, is probably the first time fireworks were
- 10:33filmed. Probably, but if not, it would
- 10:35be the 1905 French short by a director that I am not going to
- 10:41butcher their name. I'm so sorry, I will not do
- 10:43that. OK, it starts with an M.
- 10:46Right on. That's enough.
- 10:47Just like a French director. Malay.
- 10:50Malay. You know I'm not.
- 10:51No, I'm not gonna. What's the name of the film?
- 10:52The film is called Unexpected Fireworks in English because
- 10:56once again, I'm not going to embarrass myself by trying to
- 10:58say that in French. OK.
- 11:00Where's it streaming? I don't think it OK.
- 11:03The whole plot of the film is just these two guys running
- 11:06around lighting off unexpected fireworks near this sleeping
- 11:12drunkard. Oh, nice.
- 11:13Which is both Shakespearean and poetic and ridiculous and just
- 11:18strikes me as amazing film. I yeah, it tells me that
- 11:22humankind hasn't. That's nineteen O 5 versus when
- 11:26was the last Jackass movie released?
- 11:28Oh, just that was just a couple years.
- 11:29Ago, yeah, Things haven't changed, no.
- 11:32So this. Was the original Jackass.
- 11:33Yeah, so that's the possibly the first appearance of fireworks in
- 11:38film. I think that there are two other
- 11:40important moments to mention. One Sandlot, 1993.
- 11:44Classic movie. Very classic movie.
- 11:46Everybody loves Sandlot but that fireworks overhead.
- 11:50They're playing baseball on the 4th of July underneath.
- 11:52Like, that is the most American iconic patriotic moment, I think
- 11:59that exists in film. It was, I do remember watching
- 12:03that as a kid and being like, oh, I could imagine myself in my
- 12:06own baseball field behind my yard.
- 12:08Exactly. Playing with the fireworks,
- 12:10going off, imagining I was an MLB player.
- 12:12Exactly. It's perfect.
- 12:14It's beautiful. And then of course, the very
- 12:16first time that fireworks were ever used to represent sexual
- 12:19tension, which we still do in movies today, but the first time
- 12:22that it happened was the 1955 I Don't Want to Be Wrong 19 55
- 12:28Hitchcock film To Catch a Thief. OK between the kiss or during
- 12:32the kiss between Cary Grant and Grace Kelly?
- 12:36So they kissed, and then they literally played fireworks on
- 12:39screen to show that they were experiencing the feeling of
- 12:42seeing fireworks. Obviously, what would the there
- 12:45was no double entendre. There was not.
- 12:48So the. Explosive fireworks didn't have
- 12:50any other meaning. I'm sure they didn't, and I'm
- 12:53sure they don't in films now. Oh, good to know, good to know.
- 12:56I'm sure there's nothing to read between the lines.
- 12:57Take it. At face value, Yep.
- 13:00All right, Well, shall we have a succinct farewell until we see
- 13:03everybody at the end of the month again?
- 13:06I think that sounds good. Excellent.
- 13:08Well, goodbye. Bye.
