- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:07Speaker 2: All right, Well, I mentioned in the previous episode of
- 0:09Speaker 2: One Leg Up it is a big game tonight, and
- 0:12Speaker 2: I was.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Wondering should we keep him on later in the week
- 0:14Speaker 1: or have him on right to start?
- 0:16Speaker 2: How do we not have Lou Tourminello, a twenty eight
- 0:18Speaker 2: year NBA executive on before the biggest series the Knicks
- 0:23Speaker 2: have had.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Look, Indiana last year was a big deal too, But
- 0:26Speaker 1: this is big, Lou, This is big. The Knicks need
- 0:29Speaker 1: to prove that they can get pass the second round,
- 0:32Speaker 1: don't they.
- 0:34Speaker 3: This is big, Alex, Alex, you are one right, this
- 0:37Speaker 3: is big.
- 0:39Speaker 1: So it's done at the back pages of the post
- 0:41Speaker 1: end the Daily News today, by the.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Way, well it should, I mean obviously at this time
- 0:45Speaker 3: of year, with no hockey teams left, I mean, the
- 0:50Speaker 3: baseball season has just started. No matter how we want
- 0:53Speaker 3: to talk about every game start, you know, the season
- 0:56Speaker 3: just started. So this is this is the big event Boston,
- 0:59Speaker 3: New York. It's two of the original NBA franchises, and
- 1:04Speaker 3: the Knicks have a great opportunity here. You first, right,
- 1:09Speaker 3: you want to win first though, Well, you want to
- 1:11Speaker 3: win first. You saw last night. Now I'm not comparing
- 1:14Speaker 3: the Celtics and the Cavaliers. I know the Cavaliers had
- 1:17Speaker 3: a better record than the Celtics. I still favor the
- 1:20Speaker 3: Celtics to come out of the East. But Cleveland didn't
- 1:24Speaker 3: play in a week. They got caught a little bit
- 1:27Speaker 3: with their pants down, as the old saying goes. And
- 1:30Speaker 3: Indiana played a terrific game. They're well coached, Carlos as
- 1:34Speaker 3: a terrific coach, and they stole the home court advantage.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And Indiana's record over like the last four months of
- 1:42Speaker 3: the season, I mean, is like off the charts impressive.
- 1:47Speaker 3: So but here's a chance for the nixt tonight. They
- 1:51Speaker 3: got to catch the Celtics a little lethargic. All right,
- 1:54Speaker 3: this is only game one, uh, I think the first
- 1:58Speaker 3: quarter is going to be key to see how they play.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Brunson obviously is going to lead the way.
- 2:09Speaker 2: They have to carry the momentum that Brunts and three
- 2:11Speaker 2: into Boston. That's what they've got to do. And the
- 2:13Speaker 2: other thing is, I mean, the other thing that makes
- 2:17Speaker 2: this series always different than any other series is the
- 2:21Speaker 2: rich history. I mean, you've lived through it, right, the
- 2:23Speaker 2: Boston New York of any sport, Boston New York hockey, Boston,
- 2:27Speaker 2: New York baseball. Everything is. This is deeper than just
- 2:32Speaker 2: the court. This is a cultural thing right now, no
- 2:34Speaker 2: doubt about it.
- 2:35Speaker 3: I mean, obviously, as I just said, the Knicks and
- 2:37Speaker 3: the Celtics are original NBA franchises. They've played in playoff
- 2:42Speaker 3: series before the most probably as far as the Knicks go.
- 2:46Speaker 3: In sixty eight, they lost in six to them, but
- 2:49Speaker 3: the Knicks were coming on. You knew the next next
- 2:52Speaker 3: year the Knicks had a chance to win the whole thing,
- 2:55Speaker 3: you know. The Celtics, that was their last hurrah. It
- 2:58Speaker 3: was Russell's last year, and they won the championship, the Celtics,
- 3:02Speaker 3: and even though the Knicks had a better the Knicks
- 3:05Speaker 3: had a better record than them. And then even when
- 3:11Speaker 3: I was with the Nets the three years we went
- 3:12Speaker 3: to the finals, we played the Celtics the first year
- 3:16Speaker 3: and we beat them in six in the Eastern Conference Finals,
- 3:18Speaker 3: and then the next year we beat them in the
- 3:21Speaker 3: Eastern Conference semifinals, fourth straight.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So it was all love this game.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I know, I've talked to you about this game before.
- 3:27Speaker 2: My dad and I were at a game Boston versus
- 3:29Speaker 2: New Jersey. Paul Pierce, one of those guys in the
- 3:33Speaker 2: Celtics gets tossed and the Celtics come back and beat
- 3:36Speaker 2: the Nets. After that ejection, I'll never forget that because
- 3:38Speaker 2: it was like, all of a sudden, this guy gets
- 3:40Speaker 2: tossed out and the Boston Celtics come back.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I mean it was a that's a moment I won't forget.
- 3:45Speaker 2: But I want to talk about Willis because Willis was
- 3:47Speaker 2: there through all of this, and you knew will as well.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Did he tell you any stories about Boston versus New York?
- 3:53Speaker 3: Well? Really, for the Willis reed Knicks, their biggest rival
- 3:57Speaker 3: was the Lakers. They they played the Lakers in the
- 4:01Speaker 3: seventy finals, the famous Willis coming through the Tunnel game.
- 4:06Speaker 3: They beat them in seven. Then two years later Willis
- 4:09Speaker 3: did not play because of a knee injury. He missed
- 4:11Speaker 3: the whole season basically, but the Knicks got to the
- 4:14Speaker 3: finals again against the Lakers. The Knicks won the first
- 4:17Speaker 3: game shooting like seventy one percent and they won game.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Won.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Jerry Lucas and Fraser and Monroe and the Busher, you know,
- 4:28Speaker 3: all a part that team. But the Lakers. That was
- 4:31Speaker 3: the team the Lakers won. You know, they just just
- 4:36Speaker 3: rampage through the season, and then in seventy three the
- 4:40Speaker 3: Knicks played them again. So the Knicks played three played
- 4:43Speaker 3: them three times in the finals in four years. Willis
- 4:45Speaker 3: was back. Willis was the Finals MVP. The Knicks won
- 4:50Speaker 3: the championship, and so the Willis reed Knicks. Yes, the
- 4:55Speaker 3: Celtics were arrival, but the Lakers were their rival because
- 4:58Speaker 3: the Lakers had a better team. The Celtics. It was
- 5:01Speaker 3: at the end of their dynasty and they were going
- 5:03Speaker 3: through their transition until they got Cowens and Jojo White.
- 5:09Speaker 3: But in seventy three in the Eastern Conference Finals, they
- 5:13Speaker 3: did play the Celtics, and they played and they played
- 5:16Speaker 3: in seven, a seven game series. The Celtics won sixty
- 5:19Speaker 3: eight games during the regular season, and the Knicks played
- 5:23Speaker 3: them in the Conference finals. Got off to a three
- 5:25Speaker 3: to one lead Game five at Boston Garden. The Celtics
- 5:31Speaker 3: won a close one three games until they come back
- 5:33Speaker 3: to the Garden. It was a Friday night game at
- 5:36Speaker 3: the Garden and the Celtics won in overtime, okay, and
- 5:43Speaker 3: then they played Game seven at at Boston Garden on Sunday. Cavalchek,
- 5:51Speaker 3: playing with a very bad damaged shoulder, they had a
- 5:55Speaker 3: terrific team. Cowens, they had a terrific team. Silas Sas,
- 6:00Speaker 3: terrific player, just a great rebounder. The Celtics got off
- 6:04Speaker 3: to a fourteen and nothing lead. I believe it looked
- 6:07Speaker 3: like the Knicks were dead. The Knicks then turned everything around.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Dean Memiger probably had the not probably he had the
- 6:15Speaker 3: best game of his Knicks career, and the Knicks won easily,
- 6:21Speaker 3: basically just taking over the game from that early deficit,
- 6:25Speaker 3: and then beat beat the Celtics in Game seven at Boston.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I believe it was the first time the Celtics ever
- 6:31Speaker 3: lost the Game seven in the playoff series at home.
- 6:34Speaker 3: And then and then they beat the Lakers, and that
- 6:39Speaker 3: was really the last turaf for that group of Knicks,
- 6:42Speaker 3: the Fraser, Bradley, the Busher, Reid Monroe, Dick Barnett who
- 6:47Speaker 3: passed away last week, those Knicks. So yeah, so tonight
- 6:52Speaker 3: will be uh, definitely interesting.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I think we got to look in the first you know,
- 6:58Speaker 2: I know, everything seems to come down and the last
- 7:00Speaker 2: minute or so of a basketball game, but if they're
- 7:03Speaker 2: not out in full strengthen nixt I mean, if they're
- 7:05Speaker 2: banged up going into this game, that's gonna be a
- 7:07Speaker 2: warning shot from the beginning of the series, if you
- 7:09Speaker 2: could tell in the first few minutes right.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Well, again, many times games are close at the end
- 7:16Speaker 3: and then one on the last second shot or in
- 7:18Speaker 3: the last two minutes. But many times, even though it
- 7:21Speaker 3: looks like, oh the game was aside in the last
- 7:23Speaker 3: two minutes, it really was decided in the second quarter
- 7:25Speaker 3: or the first quarter because of some kind of drought,
- 7:28Speaker 3: some kind of lack of rebounding or defense. Well, if
- 7:33Speaker 3: you look at Houston and Golden State last night, and
- 7:36Speaker 3: I was, I was watching the game, and I knew
- 7:40Speaker 3: early on that Golden State had a little bit of advantage. Obviously,
- 7:46Speaker 3: they're more experienced than used to us. This is Uston's
- 7:48Speaker 3: first time they were going around playing the situation like this.
- 7:52Speaker 3: But you you saw that Golden State was a little
- 7:55Speaker 3: bit more in control, a little a little bit more
- 7:58Speaker 3: handle of what was going on. So sometimes you can
- 8:00Speaker 3: tell early. I think it's an imperative for the Knicks
- 8:03Speaker 3: to get off through would start if the Celtics fall
- 8:06Speaker 3: in love with a three point shot, that can come
- 8:08Speaker 3: back to buy them. So we're gonna have to see that.
- 8:11Speaker 2: The strategy I remember this is a team that led
- 8:14Speaker 2: that that made a record number of threes this season.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's quite something to watch. So well,
- 8:20Speaker 1: let me see, but you mentioned the West, and I
- 8:23Speaker 1: have to talk about this because, oh my god, how
- 8:26Speaker 1: much heat is James Harden getting once again for his
- 8:30Speaker 1: Game seven failure? And I you know, talk about the
- 8:33Speaker 1: Rockets and Warriors.
- 8:35Speaker 2: You remember years ago they missed like twenty seven threes
- 8:39Speaker 2: the Rockets, and he missed.
- 8:40Speaker 1: A lot of those threes. Actually, I remember that like
- 8:42Speaker 1: it was yesterday. But what is it? What does what
- 8:45Speaker 1: leaves that funk for him? In Game seven? It seems like, well,
- 8:48Speaker 1: I mean, how.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Could how could James Harden in the seventh game only
- 8:52Speaker 3: take eight field goal attempts? I mean, Alex, does he
- 8:57Speaker 3: have the will to win? Or he just wants to
- 9:01Speaker 3: collect his money? And I hate to be so crass,
- 9:04Speaker 3: but uh does he have that will? Twin? As I
- 9:08Speaker 3: told you many times, there are certain there were guys
- 9:11Speaker 3: in the NBA over the history that would cut your
- 9:13Speaker 3: heart out. Michael Jordan would cut your heart out to win.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Kobe Bryant would do that, Kid would do Jason Kidd
- 9:21Speaker 3: would do that. You have those guys who would do that.
- 9:25Speaker 3: James Harden definitely doesn't have that. And I don't even
- 9:29Speaker 3: know if after that game that affected him in a
- 9:32Speaker 3: negative way. He probably just went on, Okay, I'm gonna
- 9:34Speaker 3: go wherever I'm gonna do. Now, go to the Caribbean.
- 9:39Speaker 3: I mean, this is I don't know if he worries
- 9:41Speaker 3: about his legacy and he's had really if this was
- 9:44Speaker 3: a singular bad seventh game, okay, but you're right, he's
- 9:48Speaker 3: had numerous numerous playoffs failures and he.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Was injured if I remember correctly, or he wasn't at
- 9:53Speaker 1: full strength either when the Nets had that team.
- 9:57Speaker 3: He wasn't full and he played and he did he
- 9:59Speaker 3: did play play basically on one leg. I mean, I
- 10:02Speaker 3: give him kudos for that. But again, over the course
- 10:06Speaker 3: of his career, Uh, yeah, he's had too many failures
- 10:09Speaker 3: and uh, you just hate to peg just postseason failures
- 10:14Speaker 3: and not and forget how it's brilliant to the regular season,
- 10:17Speaker 3: but how could this great player failed in the playoffs
- 10:22Speaker 3: over and over again and take only eight shots the
- 10:24Speaker 3: other night? That was an embarrassment. The Clippers gave up one.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I don't think they were really surprised at how bad
- 10:31Speaker 1: the game was out of reach pretty early.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Yes, because the series had been a very good.
- 10:36Speaker 1: Series, and I I had mentally and not been following
- 10:40Speaker 1: this closely.
- 10:41Speaker 3: But I know you.
- 10:41Speaker 1: This is what I have you on because you you
- 10:42Speaker 1: cover everything. You follow Euro up till three in the
- 10:45Speaker 1: morning if you're covered all this stuff. So it's, uh,
- 10:49Speaker 1: it's fun and you know it's weird.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Though there's not been a New York team in the
- 10:53Speaker 2: NHL side, and obviously the Knicks are in, so that
- 10:58Speaker 2: makes interesting. I still feel like both players have been
- 11:00Speaker 2: very intriguing, Like they've just been both interesting playoffs in
- 11:04Speaker 2: an atmosphere which is only a one team town normally.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Are both teams of the postseason right now?
- 11:09Speaker 3: Well, sometimes you have all five of them in yeah,
- 11:13Speaker 3: so uh yeah, I mean obviously this will for the
- 11:18Speaker 3: next ten days, this will be dominant.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Uh.
- 11:22Speaker 3: And again, the schedule is good, Alex. It's not like, uh,
- 11:26Speaker 3: they're playing, They're playing tonight, then they're playing Wednesday, and
- 11:30Speaker 3: then I don't think they play until Saturday. I mean,
- 11:33Speaker 3: I have to schedule. I don't have to schedule right
- 11:35Speaker 3: in front of me. But I think basically what it is,
- 11:39Speaker 3: there's rest between games for both of these teams, not
- 11:43Speaker 3: only just for the next for the Celtics.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And I know the Celtics are coming and also a
- 11:46Speaker 1: little banged up, so they need to We'll have to
- 11:50Speaker 1: see and it'll be fun. It'll conjure up a lot
- 11:52Speaker 1: of things.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I'm sure the berau will be about all the historic
- 11:55Speaker 2: matchups between the two of them, Alex.
- 11:57Speaker 3: One playoff series has nothing to do with the other.
- 12:00Speaker 3: The Celtics feeding Orlando, the Knicks being Detroit, that really
- 12:04Speaker 3: will have nothing to do with this with this playoff series.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Will the rotation be different? Will let show a play
- 12:10Speaker 3: more for the Knicks? Will somebody play less for the next?
- 12:14Speaker 3: Will he go deeper into his bench? You know those
- 12:19Speaker 3: are things that we'll we'll We'll see h Al Hawford,
- 12:24Speaker 3: guys like that. Will what Will there be some unsung
- 12:27Speaker 3: heroes for the Celtics. They got a deep team, Alex
- 12:31Speaker 3: and it's and I hate to repeat myself, it's gonna
- 12:35Speaker 3: be hard to beat them four out of seven.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Hey, anything's possible. I know that.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I'm sure if Fibb's scouting reports on Brown and certainly Tatum,
- 12:43Speaker 2: and you know you're right if you're covering those two
- 12:45Speaker 2: guys and the other guys are gonna have an opportunity
- 12:47Speaker 2: to pop up out of nowhere and make those baskets.
- 12:49Speaker 1: So we'll see how they cover the floor.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Well, look at Pritchard, sixth Man of the Year average
- 12:54Speaker 3: over fourteen points a game.
- 12:56Speaker 1: All right, so we'll see what happens. Now, we gotta
- 12:58Speaker 1: get to last night because, as I mentioned, the Rangers
- 13:02Speaker 1: are not in it. But I found a lot of
- 13:04Speaker 1: Ranger fans very intrigued in this. And why not? I mean,
- 13:07Speaker 1: first of all, I had the first ever Game seven
- 13:09Speaker 1: in Winnipeg, and why not the two hundred ever Game
- 13:14Speaker 1: seven of the Seneca Playoffs? Why not do double overtime? It
- 13:17Speaker 1: just makes sense, right, Louis.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Well the game, the two games over the weekend, the
- 13:23Speaker 3: one hundred and ninety ninth Game seven on Saturday Night
- 13:25Speaker 3: and two hundredth Game seven last night, were I don't
- 13:31Speaker 3: want to use the word iconic, but pretty close to it.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I watched the game. I watched both games. It looked
- 13:38Speaker 3: like Colorado had Saturday Night in control, and with about
- 13:43Speaker 3: twelve minutes ago, Colorado was up to nothing. Dallas made
- 13:47Speaker 3: it two to one, and Miko Ranton and who's had
- 13:50Speaker 3: quite an interesting year, scored a hat trick and Dallas
- 13:55Speaker 3: came off the mat to win. I didn't feel like
- 13:58Speaker 3: Dallas was going to come back. Sometimes, you know, you
- 14:01Speaker 3: get that feeling, Okay, this game's not over. But they
- 14:05Speaker 3: did a terrible loss for Colorado. Again, we talked about
- 14:09Speaker 3: the way the NHL playoff structure is set up, where
- 14:13Speaker 3: they had the second and third place team in a
- 14:15Speaker 3: division play each other instead of just going one to eight,
- 14:19Speaker 3: so a team that could win the Cup like Colorado
- 14:22Speaker 3: is out. And then last night, hey, with two minutes ago,
- 14:27Speaker 3: it's three to one, and the Winnipeg just had pulled
- 14:32Speaker 3: had pulled hell a buck a minute earlier. And then
- 14:35Speaker 3: they scored one to fifty five to go, and I
- 14:37Speaker 3: said to myself, they're gonna lose three to two. And
- 14:39Speaker 3: then they scored. They scroed technically with three seconds ago,
- 14:42Speaker 3: even though on television they said one point six, but
- 14:45Speaker 3: I guess they put some time back on, you know,
- 14:49Speaker 3: a beautiful tipping by Cole Pernetti. And then the overtime
- 14:57Speaker 3: periods were exhilarating, and uh, you know, Winnipeg had the
- 15:03Speaker 3: better chances in the overtime, and then and then and
- 15:05Speaker 3: then they won on the lowery goal.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Well, you know, I had to wake up early for piscoss,
- 15:10Speaker 2: so I had to find out when I woke up
- 15:11Speaker 2: this morning. Because double overtime, I probably was knocked out
- 15:14Speaker 2: in that intermission.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Okay, so I had to find out in the morning.
- 15:17Speaker 1: But you know, it's fun and it was interesting to see,
- 15:22Speaker 1: you know, Ramson in his people call a revenge game.
- 15:26Speaker 1: He didn't come in with the revenge. I think he
- 15:27Speaker 1: really liked his own teammates.
- 15:29Speaker 3: It seemed like, well he actually said that. Uh you
- 15:32Speaker 3: know Emily Kaplan interviewing after the game on ABC, and
- 15:36Speaker 3: he said, what you just said, because they're my friends,
- 15:38Speaker 3: you know, But I want to win, you know. And uh,
- 15:41Speaker 3: but he's had quite an interesting year to say the least. Uh.
- 15:45Speaker 3: You know, Alex, Uh, this is one hundred and sixth
- 15:47Speaker 3: year at a NHL and uh, only three times was
- 15:54Speaker 3: a two goal deficit in the seventh game made up
- 15:58Speaker 3: only three times? And now we've seen it the fourth
- 16:01Speaker 3: time on Saturday night and the fifth time last night.
- 16:04Speaker 3: So how do you figure that? Right?
- 16:07Speaker 1: And I mean I went down and expected characters and
- 16:09Speaker 1: that pletty.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Can you tell us something about Prolett because I feel
- 16:12Speaker 2: like we only know about him through Game seven, because
- 16:14Speaker 2: who's really falling Winnipeg during the right.
- 16:16Speaker 3: And he's and he's a goalscorer for sure, you know
- 16:19Speaker 3: he's he's one of their top offensive players. And you
- 16:24Speaker 3: know he gets the open spaces and he got to
- 16:26Speaker 3: an open space for that tip in Alex when that
- 16:30Speaker 3: when that puck came was on the on the left point,
- 16:35Speaker 3: and I think it was Nick, Yes, it was Nick Eelers. Yes,
- 16:39Speaker 3: he bobbled it. And I said to my and then
- 16:41Speaker 3: when he threw it, when he threw it to the uh,
- 16:44Speaker 3: he threw it to the right side, I said, what
- 16:46Speaker 3: is he doing? I think that they had enough time
- 16:48Speaker 3: to score the goal. But Kyle, it was Kyle Connor
- 16:52Speaker 3: who passed passed it to Cole Pernetti. It was a numberlieve.
- 16:56Speaker 1: But and then and then the whole thing.
- 16:57Speaker 2: And I'll tell you and I said this last week too,
- 16:59Speaker 2: I think I said. Anyway, Bennington's been energized by this
- 17:03Speaker 2: Four Nations Cup. I mean, his rejuvenation is the reason
- 17:07Speaker 2: why they got so far in what they did.
- 17:10Speaker 3: So ironically, Bennington beat Hollibuck in the Four Nations Cup
- 17:16Speaker 3: and Hallabuck won last night. Just that's you know, just ironic.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Adam Lowry's for the winning goal was born in Saint Louis,
- 17:25Speaker 3: Missouri because his father, his father, who had a nineteen
- 17:28Speaker 3: year NHL Korea was playing for the Saint Louis Blues
- 17:30Speaker 3: at the time. So all these little ironic little twist
- 17:35Speaker 3: and turns.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Oh one and uh, you know, I just think of
- 17:39Speaker 1: j D.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Saint Louis guy, ranger guy, and you know, all these connections, and.
- 17:44Speaker 1: But never it's a former ranger actually on the Blues.
- 17:46Speaker 1: So there you go.
- 17:48Speaker 3: I gotta ask you.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Though some people were, you know, talking about how Igor
- 17:52Speaker 2: is better than Hallibuck, this guy doesn't perform in the clutch.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like we just were hearing a
- 17:58Speaker 1: lot of rhetoric and not actually in the guy's path.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I mean, he stepped up when he needed to, but
- 18:03Speaker 1: why was he getting all the hate?
- 18:05Speaker 3: Well, obviously, when you fail in the whostseason, the bullet
- 18:09Speaker 3: on your back, the bulls eye, excuse me on your
- 18:13Speaker 3: back becomes bigger. And that's what's happened with Hellabuck. He
- 18:17Speaker 3: was replaced several times in this series. I'm not saying
- 18:23Speaker 3: it's all his fault. Even last night the Winnipeg defense
- 18:26Speaker 3: early in the game left him defenseless. The second goal
- 18:29Speaker 3: was very stoppable. The first goal he had no chance.
- 18:34Speaker 3: He has a chance to undo that now in this
- 18:36Speaker 3: next series, which I think is going to be very tough,
- 18:39Speaker 3: and I.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Think already built this confidence in that over in the overtime.
- 18:42Speaker 2: I mean, the way he was making those glove saves
- 18:44Speaker 2: that was pretty good.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Well, he was more aggressive in the overtimes. He was
- 18:47Speaker 3: coming out to the edge of the blue paint, and hey,
- 18:51Speaker 3: he's gonna win the VESNA again. He might win the
- 18:54Speaker 3: MVP and ves Uh. So obviously, you know they say
- 18:58Speaker 3: he's the best goal in the world. Well, again, arguably
- 19:01Speaker 3: he's the best goal in the world because he had
- 19:02Speaker 3: so many great goals in the NHL and uh. But
- 19:06Speaker 3: obviously the pressure is gonna be on him in his
- 19:09Speaker 3: next series. You know, against Dallas, they have the whole
- 19:12Speaker 3: ie advantage, which is good.
- 19:16Speaker 2: I still feel like we're veering toward a rematch of
- 19:18Speaker 2: last year. By the way, I just get that feeling
- 19:20Speaker 2: we might still go to that rematch of Stars pants, right.
- 19:23Speaker 3: I mean, well, you mean you mean Edmonton Panthers, right,
- 19:30Speaker 3: you could be definitely, you could be Edmonton's goaltending. You
- 19:36Speaker 3: never know what you're gonna get. They're not as deep
- 19:39Speaker 3: as I thought they were. But again, they have a
- 19:45Speaker 3: tough series coming up against Vegas. Man, that's gonna be
- 19:48Speaker 3: a tough series. So the NHL players are great, Alex,
- 19:53Speaker 3: they are fantastic.
- 19:54Speaker 2: It's gonna be fun and uh, I actually do think
- 19:57Speaker 2: that the Stars have a better path though to the final.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I really do think that that could be the case here.
- 20:02Speaker 3: So I would agree. I would agree with you. I
- 20:04Speaker 3: would agree with you on that. Washington and Carolina interesting series.
- 20:09Speaker 3: You know what, Carolina doesn't give you a lot of space.
- 20:13Speaker 3: We'll see what happens. How they defend Ovechkin, especially on
- 20:18Speaker 3: the power play when he sets up in that left
- 20:20Speaker 3: circle for the one timer. And of course starting tonight, Yeah,
- 20:25Speaker 3: tonight is Florida at Toronto, the defending champs against the
- 20:30Speaker 3: team that has been hoping fifty years to be champs.
- 20:35Speaker 3: An interesting series. Again, I know I've said this before,
- 20:39Speaker 3: this is Toronto's best chance. Florida. You can never doubt
- 20:43Speaker 3: the champion, but they're banged up and I don't know
- 20:46Speaker 3: how healthy some of the guys are on Florida. I'm
- 20:51Speaker 3: not going against Florida. But this is this Toronto Florida
- 20:55Speaker 3: series is going to be mighty interesting.
- 20:58Speaker 1: It'll be a little more interesting because I feel like,
- 21:01Speaker 1: you know, the Leafs have them all healthy.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Now.
- 21:03Speaker 2: I don't know exactly what it is, but they're all
- 21:05Speaker 2: a core now, you know what I mean to other postseasons,
- 21:08Speaker 2: it seems like they've got a little more together.
- 21:10Speaker 1: And did anybody see them doing what they did to Ottaway?
- 21:13Speaker 1: Don't anybody saw that.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Outrightness that they had against thee Yeah? Well they I
- 21:18Speaker 4: mean they were up three nothing. They're the better team
- 21:21Speaker 4: than Ottawa, who had made up, hadn't been in the
- 21:23Speaker 4: players for a couple of years. They should have won
- 21:25Speaker 4: that series.
- 21:26Speaker 3: They should. I'm shocked that they lost four nothing at
- 21:28Speaker 3: home in uh in Game five, and the pressure is
- 21:33Speaker 3: on them. The pressure is on them. The feel good
- 21:38Speaker 3: story is the Winnipeg Jets. Yes they won the President's Trophy,
- 21:43Speaker 3: Yes they had the best wreck in the league. But
- 21:46Speaker 3: you know, the city of Winnipeg gets criticized in Canada
- 21:51Speaker 3: a lot. You know, nobody wants to sign there as
- 21:54Speaker 3: a free agent, so they have a chip on their shoulder.
- 21:57Speaker 3: And meanwhile, Toronto, the Cosmopolitan city with Canada's most famous team,
- 22:03Speaker 3: most popular team. Uh, it's gonna be interesting to see
- 22:09Speaker 3: as the Canadian cities progress, how the fans are going
- 22:13Speaker 3: to react to that north of the border.
- 22:17Speaker 1: But I mean, as I was watching these Canadian teams
- 22:20Speaker 1: and Winnipeg last night, I started thinking, there could be
- 22:23Speaker 1: a real chance this Stanley Cup is outside of them,
- 22:26Speaker 1: of the United of America. I mean, there's a great chance.
- 22:29Speaker 3: There is a great chance. Oh without that, it could be.
- 22:32Speaker 3: It could be. It could be Toronto and Winnipeg, could
- 22:34Speaker 3: be Toronto and Edmunds.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Absolutely, because they're all strong.
- 22:38Speaker 2: And by the way, I assume on this, I like
- 22:40Speaker 2: the jets new logo compared to when they used to
- 22:42Speaker 2: have the Jets.
- 22:43Speaker 1: I just this one looks very high techtively, you know.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Well, actually I like the Jets uniforms. I do, so
- 22:50Speaker 3: I agree with you on that, I really do.
- 22:53Speaker 2: So it'll be fun. Now back to the NBA real
- 22:55Speaker 2: quick before I wrap up. I keep thinking, as we're
- 22:58Speaker 2: talking about all this, if you're the NBA, you might
- 23:02Speaker 2: want Cat versus and in the I mean, the Wolves
- 23:05Speaker 2: versus Knicks would be very interesting because of that, you know,
- 23:08Speaker 2: going back against his old team narrative, or you might
- 23:12Speaker 2: want the Warriors.
- 23:12Speaker 1: I mean, Golden State hasn't been there in a little while,
- 23:14Speaker 1: so that'd be fun to have been back.
- 23:16Speaker 3: And imagine, Alex, the NBA wants the Warriors, and I
- 23:19Speaker 3: think the Warriors. I think the Warriors are have a
- 23:22Speaker 3: great chance to win that.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Can you imagine that series if they're both in it
- 23:26Speaker 1: and you have Towns on one and shooting from seven
- 23:28Speaker 1: foot and then you have Steps shooting from the logo,
- 23:32Speaker 1: I mean it could happen.
- 23:33Speaker 3: That could be fun. Let's see how the k next
- 23:35Speaker 3: suit to night.
- 23:37Speaker 2: And if they do get over the hump, are they
- 23:39Speaker 2: gonna be the next Are they gonna be a favorite?
- 23:41Speaker 2: I mean, is this gonna be a real favorite team
- 23:43Speaker 2: or will they still have that chip on there?
- 23:45Speaker 1: Well, you haven't beat the Calves yet, so I'll see
- 23:46Speaker 1: we could do gets.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Oh no, no, no, no no. I think if it's
- 23:50Speaker 3: a Knicks and the Calves, I think the Knicks have
- 23:51Speaker 3: a great chance to beat them. I mean I I yes,
- 23:56Speaker 3: they had a great year. Kenny Anderson Kenny Atkinson is
- 23:59Speaker 3: a fantas plastic job as coach. They have a fine
- 24:02Speaker 3: young team. The Celtics is still the best team in
- 24:05Speaker 3: the Eastern Conference.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it would be almost like David slaying Goliath. So
- 24:11Speaker 1: it'll be interesting. And I don't know if you know
- 24:13Speaker 1: that they removed the watch parties from the outdoors and
- 24:15Speaker 1: they got to pay to be indoors of the.
- 24:16Speaker 3: Garden now, so oh, how much are they charge in alex.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Only ten bucks right now, But I can see that
- 24:22Speaker 1: price increasing as the series evolved. So we'll see, because
- 24:26Speaker 1: you know, New York's gonna be on fire. You know,
- 24:29Speaker 1: they're gonna be excited.
- 24:30Speaker 2: If they happen to beat the Boston team, which hasn't
- 24:32Speaker 2: been done a little while.
- 24:33Speaker 1: By the way, it's.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Well, yeah, we'll we'll see.
- 24:38Speaker 1: What I do feel like Boston over the last few
- 24:40Speaker 1: years has had an edge in every sport. I don't know,
- 24:43Speaker 1: I well, yeah they do. They dieverer hockey, the range
- 24:47Speaker 1: have been better than the Bruins, that's yeah.
- 24:49Speaker 3: I mean the Bruins have had those good teams for
- 24:52Speaker 3: so long. Now they're going through the transition. That's the
- 24:55Speaker 3: tough part.
- 24:56Speaker 2: It was the first time since sixty eight I think
- 24:58Speaker 2: I read that the Stars, Black and Rangers did not
- 25:01Speaker 2: make it to the playoffs, which is just amazing to
- 25:04Speaker 2: me that one of those teams saying since sixty eight
- 25:08Speaker 2: for all three of them not to make it, so.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Was the Blackhawks, the Rangers, and they read the Bruins also,
- 25:15Speaker 3: oh and the Bruins okay, yes.
- 25:17Speaker 2: And then to add Detroit there because Red Wings also
- 25:19Speaker 2: didn't make it. So it's been they've been going through
- 25:23Speaker 2: a lot too up there. And talk about rebuild, I
- 25:25Speaker 2: feel like the Tridur rebuilding as we speak, well.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Well, Detroit looked like they rebuild at least to get
- 25:30Speaker 3: into the playoffs was was complete, but they took a
- 25:33Speaker 3: little bit of a step back.
- 25:36Speaker 2: While I have because you always give me the nostalogia,
- 25:38Speaker 2: what's your favorite Knick Celtics memory that you can remember.
- 25:42Speaker 3: My favorite Knick Celtics memory was Game seven, seventy three
- 25:45Speaker 3: at Boston Guard and I thought Nicks were done and
- 25:48Speaker 3: they and they won ninety four to seventy eight, and
- 25:50Speaker 3: they were losing fourteen to nothing, and that Celtic team
- 25:53Speaker 3: was fantastic. The Celtics the next year won the NBA Championship.
- 25:58Speaker 3: They beat the Bucks with kareemable Jabbar and Oscar Robinson
- 26:01Speaker 3: in seven games, and then in seventy six, the Celtics
- 26:06Speaker 3: won again. They beat they beat the Suns and in six,
- 26:12Speaker 3: the famous Game five game, the multiple overtime game. If
- 26:17Speaker 3: you have a chance YouTube it, it's unbelievable. The great
- 26:22Speaker 3: Brett Musburger was at the mic for CBS and it
- 26:27Speaker 3: was it was a great game. So yeah, but the
- 26:31Speaker 3: Knicks beating them in seventy three, it was was the highlight,
- 26:35Speaker 3: I would say, of those of those days.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You know, by Meyfi, we're normally talking about baseball because honestly,
- 26:41Speaker 1: the Knicks are not even into May sometimes, you know,
- 26:43Speaker 1: it's been those type of seasons. Now the Yanks to
- 26:47Speaker 1: get a reprieve from the headlines because the Knicks are
- 26:48Speaker 1: going to dominate, as you say, the next ten days
- 26:50Speaker 1: or so.
- 26:51Speaker 3: So for sure.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'm keeping eye on everything. One last thing though,
- 26:55Speaker 2: before I let you go. Do you know what today is?
- 26:58Speaker 2: This is why I love scrolling to find out these things.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Secretariats Kentucky Derby win was on this date it what
- 27:06Speaker 2: nineteen seventy.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Eight, seventy three, seventy three. Sorry, Secretariat was one hell
- 27:13Speaker 3: of an athlete, Alex he really was.
- 27:17Speaker 1: And you know we just which is yeah, oh, records
- 27:21Speaker 1: that won't ever be broken, right, I mean, my goodness. Well,
- 27:26Speaker 1: on that note, I did have the chance to meet
- 27:28Speaker 1: trader Billmont who won his second Derby in six years.
- 27:32Speaker 1: Very cool, and you know the last time horse remand
- 27:35Speaker 1: slop and won was justifying. We know what happened after that.
- 27:39Speaker 3: So well, Saturday's race was very interesting. I enjoy I
- 27:45Speaker 3: enjoyed it. I thought journalism had it when it came
- 27:48Speaker 3: to the top of the stretch and then then sovereignty
- 27:53Speaker 3: just kicked into another gear.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Was affirmed in seventy eight.
- 27:57Speaker 3: It was Al Darrin firm in seventy eight and they
- 28:01Speaker 3: finished one two in all three races, which is just incredible.
- 28:05Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 28:06Speaker 2: You know what's amazing about that as not many horses
- 28:08Speaker 2: do the second leg or even the third leg.
- 28:10Speaker 1: If they're not, you know, they don't always come back now.
- 28:13Speaker 3: So right, well, a lot of trainers believe there should
- 28:16Speaker 3: be more of a gap between the three races. Now.
- 28:20Speaker 3: One of my friends, who is a racehorse owner, I
- 28:24Speaker 3: thinks they should be a wide gap. He thinks they
- 28:25Speaker 3: should have the Derby in May, he said, even if
- 28:29Speaker 3: says around Memorial Day, the Preakness, like fourth of July,
- 28:33Speaker 3: and then Labor Day, you know, have the Belmont Steakes,
- 28:36Speaker 3: just to give them that kind of kind of rest.
- 28:39Speaker 3: They're never gonna do that, of course, no, but that's.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Very interesting and I would give more interesting to interests,
- 28:45Speaker 1: especially Memorial Day weekend. Can you imagine that that would
- 28:47Speaker 1: be right?
- 28:48Speaker 3: So the lie that's one of my friends. He's a
- 28:50Speaker 3: racehorse owner, and he said it should be more spread out.
- 28:54Speaker 3: But the three the three races in five weeks obviously
- 29:00Speaker 3: keeps the sport at a high level of interest.
- 29:03Speaker 2: It also does increase the risk of injury, There's no
- 29:05Speaker 2: doubt about that. So that gap idea is something more
- 29:09Speaker 2: worth considering.
- 29:10Speaker 1: And I don't know, have you been the Ubs?
- 29:12Speaker 3: I went there, Yes, I've been the Ubs.
- 29:15Speaker 1: You've been there? Lately? It looks like they demolished the
- 29:18Speaker 1: entire Belmont facade.
- 29:20Speaker 2: I don't know if I saw that correctly, but I
- 29:22Speaker 2: feel like they're redoing the whole thing now.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Though they might be obviously going to do the Belmont
- 29:27Speaker 3: again up at Saratoga, but it's supposed to be back
- 29:30Speaker 3: at Belmont next year. I don't know how far they've
- 29:34Speaker 3: got along on the on the construction, so you know,
- 29:40Speaker 3: we'll see if they'll complete that in time. But interesting,
- 29:45Speaker 3: you know, the triple crown is interesting. It's a it's
- 29:49Speaker 3: an interesting uh. Like I said, five six weeks of
- 29:52Speaker 3: capturing the attention you know, of the horse racing world.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Now, I guess about Baffort still may be in the
- 29:58Speaker 1: previous I mean he did that that lost this weekend,
- 30:01Speaker 1: but he's always a threat.
- 30:02Speaker 3: In these different and usually you know, they go from
- 30:07Speaker 3: the most forces are in the Kentucky Derby. Usually, I
- 30:10Speaker 3: think the fewest over the last you know, thirty forty
- 30:15Speaker 3: years has been in the Preakness. So well, you know,
- 30:20Speaker 3: looking forward to seeing you always want to have the
- 30:25Speaker 3: Belmont be a triple crown possibility. So you would like
- 30:29Speaker 3: to see sovereignty win the Preakness, which makes the Belmont intrigue.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Yes, I mean there they pack it.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Man, they packed whether and Sarah Tuga is a little
- 30:40Speaker 2: bigger field for it, but they packed Belmont.
- 30:42Speaker 1: I mean you've been I don't know if you've ever
- 30:43Speaker 1: been there dirt on the stakes.
- 30:45Speaker 3: I have never been there. Out of Belmont stakes. I
- 30:48Speaker 3: have a relative cousin who's who's been to thirty one
- 30:52Speaker 3: belmonts and he was in Florida.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Now, so people who use it as a way to
- 30:58Speaker 2: get drunk at the track, but you know, and it's
- 31:00Speaker 2: a fun time, so I can't knock them for that.
- 31:02Speaker 1: It's a great social event.
- 31:05Speaker 2: I do miss it being down here, and I just
- 31:08Speaker 2: assigned things are changing, I guess.
- 31:09Speaker 3: So yeah, And I'll be back next year as long
- 31:11Speaker 3: as the construction of the new Belmont is complete, the
- 31:15Speaker 3: renovation of Belmont is complete.
- 31:17Speaker 1: And then once the construction by Cinebo, you and I
- 31:19Speaker 1: gotta catch a soccer game after a met game, Okay,
- 31:22Speaker 1: we gotta do that too.
- 31:23Speaker 3: I mean, it's could be right next to City Field.
- 31:25Speaker 1: That'll be great because they all play in the same season.
- 31:28Speaker 3: So right they do. There is no talk. There is
- 31:31Speaker 3: some talk that the MS the MLS. There's been some talk,
- 31:37Speaker 3: I don't know how concrete, that the MLS might want
- 31:41Speaker 3: to coincide with the season in Europe, the season calendar
- 31:46Speaker 3: in Europe, which is from August to May.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, yeah, but that's really bad weather here in
- 31:52Speaker 2: the States.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Yeah no, well, I mean even in England sometimes they're
- 31:56Speaker 3: playing and it's snow on the field.
- 31:58Speaker 1: But you know that thinking in that area, I'd be
- 32:01Speaker 1: remiss if I didn't ask you, mister metfan over here,
- 32:04Speaker 1: Steve Cohen wants to buy us and y twenty year anniversary.
- 32:07Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on that? Oh?
- 32:09Speaker 3: I uh, so he wants to I guess he has
- 32:12Speaker 3: money to burn, so he wants to buy s and why. Yeah,
- 32:16Speaker 3: I know that in his the original deal, the Wilpond's
- 32:20Speaker 3: kept us and why. I don't know how much they own,
- 32:23Speaker 3: But it doesn't surprise me, Alex. The whole media landscape
- 32:26Speaker 3: is changing every day. We're going to see big changes
- 32:31Speaker 3: in the next two years. We really And in this two.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Hundred four billion dollar budget for New York State, is
- 32:37Speaker 1: any of that, including Wansota's contract? Did we hear anything
- 32:40Speaker 1: like that?
- 32:40Speaker 3: Or? I mean the guys Alonso's had a great month.
- 32:46Speaker 3: It's only one month. I don't know if the metsican
- 32:49Speaker 3: to sign.
- 32:49Speaker 2: It, Alex, Yeah, I don't know. Well, I'm in Soto.
- 32:53Speaker 2: I wonder if our taxpayers are gonna start paying for
- 32:55Speaker 2: Soto too.
- 32:55Speaker 1: In this budget. It's so big.
- 32:57Speaker 3: But you know, yeah, no, I'll again, Uh, Soto obviously,
- 33:03Speaker 3: he's the he's the big uh, the big guy and
- 33:06Speaker 3: the boy that he has. He been hitting the ball
- 33:08Speaker 3: in hard luck lately. I mean, he had a three
- 33:10Speaker 3: run home run and I thought was way over the fence.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Uh huh, I pulled back yesterday and uh, he'll be okay,
- 33:19Speaker 3: all right.
- 33:19Speaker 1: And one last thing, I think i'll have you on
- 33:21Speaker 1: next Monday because I believe that Yogi's one hundredth birthday,
- 33:24Speaker 1: So we gotta go talk to Yogi Bera. Maybe we'll
- 33:26Speaker 1: have Lindsay Bearron, who I had the pleasure of meeting yesterday.
- 33:29Speaker 3: So maybe we'll make that invite. Well, she had a
- 33:32Speaker 3: great documentary about her grandfather.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Oh it's tremendous. I've seen clips of it and whatnot.
- 33:39Speaker 1: So and I got to meet Yogi. He was a
- 33:42Speaker 1: character man and he signed my book away. It was
- 33:44Speaker 1: just he definitely kept made me feel welcome in the
- 33:47Speaker 1: sweets every time we were up there. So we miss him.
- 33:50Speaker 3: Well he was he was. He was a nice man,
- 33:52Speaker 3: that's for sure.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Quite the character and quite a good person. But we'll
- 33:56Speaker 2: save that for next week and do this again.
- 33:58Speaker 3: Soon and time you need me. I love talking to you, Alex.
- 34:03Speaker 2: We did this in the pinch because I said we
- 34:04Speaker 2: gotta have Luan to talk game one and uh, maybe
- 34:08Speaker 2: NIX and seven.
- 34:09Speaker 1: That's what my one of my friends are saying.
- 34:10Speaker 3: We'll have to see, We'll see. That's why, that's why
