Latest / Eye Opener Society / From Breath to Body: Practical Tips to Deepen Your Meditation
Transcript
- 0:01Hello, everyone. Welcome back to EyeOpener Society's Guided Meditation Series.
- 0:08And this is a special episode that I'm doing because, like I said,
- 0:12I don't always want to give guided meditations.
- 0:16I also wanted to give some tips, tricks, you know, stories, whatever the case
- 0:21may be, to help you with meditation.
- 0:25And one thing I've learned is there's so many different types of meditations.
- 0:32Pick and choose what works best for you. These guided meditations are the easiest
- 0:36to do online because everything else, it's quiet and there's really nothing else to do.
- 0:42So in order to introduce some new things, I wanted to bring on Hannah Rose,
- 0:49who has the podcast, The Sound Within.
- 0:53And most of you know her. I'm sure everybody heard her show.
- 0:56If not, You better get listening.
- 0:59She's got some amazing things, but Hannah Rose does intentional breathing,
- 1:05and I figured we could work this in.
- 1:08So let's introduce Hannah Rose. Hannah, how are you doing today?
- 1:12Thank you for joining us on the Guided Meditation series. Yes, thank you.
- 1:17I'm happy to be here. It's always obviously a pleasure to do an episode with you.
- 1:22And so I'm excited to chat more about the guided meditations,
- 1:27which I personally love Gary's guided meditations.
- 1:31If you guys haven't listened to them yet, he's not only, you know,
- 1:36the man behind the face of Eye Opener Society, but he's also amazing at.
- 1:44Guiding people through meditation. So definitely check that out.
- 1:49And I'm excited to talk a little bit more about that and incorporating the breath with that too.
- 1:55Well, it's much appreciated. Thank you so much. It's always nice to hear that from you.
- 1:59Yeah, I, like I said, guided meditations is just something I like to do because
- 2:03they're very easy because the listener just gets to sit back and I get to paint
- 2:08that picture for them and it helps.
- 2:12And like I said, there's so many other the ways to meditate,
- 2:14but when you're doing a series online, it's just the easiest one to do.
- 2:20So that brings me to the intentional breathing because it's something I think
- 2:27we can incorporate in meditation.
- 2:31If not for anything, at the very beginning, when you want to clear that space,
- 2:36you want to clear your own intentions. And I believe that intentional breathing
- 2:41is powerful enough to actually do that.
- 2:44So before we even go any further with that, why don't you, Hannah Rose,
- 2:47just explain a little bit about the intentional breathing and,
- 2:51you know, how you do it and how you learned it and all.
- 2:56Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I have kind of talked about this a bit on The Sound
- 3:01Within about my experience with the intentional breath and my best friend,
- 3:08Amber June, She's the one that introduced me to the breath, and we actually met on TikTok,
- 3:14just like I met you there as well.
- 3:19And, you know, I really was just...
- 3:24Being open-minded that day, I really had no idea what it was about.
- 3:29Yeah, it kind of looked a little crazy and sounded crazy. It was against the
- 3:33norm of what you would think when people say to breathe.
- 3:37You would think that you want to slow down your breaths, which is an amazing
- 3:41breath pattern for people that do enjoy slow inhales and slow exhales.
- 3:47But you could also achieve just as much mental clarity and relaxation with fast-paced patterns.
- 3:57And I know some people might automatically think that breathing fast like that
- 4:07is going to create a hyperventilation state in the body,
- 4:13which in a way it does.
- 4:15But it's also releasing so much of what we carry in our bodies,
- 4:22in all of our energetic centers throughout our life without sometimes even realizing it.
- 4:29And so when we're able to just kind of shut the logical mind off,
- 4:36which is what intentional breathing is supposed to be for.
- 4:39You're not really supposed to put a lot of thought into it, which is why I would
- 4:44suggest not even really worrying about the patterns.
- 4:47You can just play with your own inhales and exhales and find out what feels
- 4:53good for you and move with your body so that you can move any stuck energy within that.
- 5:01And so it's good to even start getting familiar with your inhales and exhales
- 5:07before a guided meditation, which is a lot of the time suggested.
- 5:12Do we always take the suggestion or no, I don't know, but it can be hard to.
- 5:22Commit to it. Actually sit down and do it.
- 5:26It's really easy to, of course,
- 5:29take it all in and see how good it looks and sounds, but if you're not really
- 5:35taking the intentional time with yourself,
- 5:37you're going to have trouble achieving that mental clarity that you're trying to achieve.
- 5:45So, for me, it has changed my life in more ways than I can count.
- 5:54And I like to use the breath when
- 5:58I'm experiencing happiness and when I'm experiencing sadness and anger.
- 6:04And it has allowed me to have an outlet for things that can just get overwhelming for the human body.
- 6:16You bring up some really good points and, like I said, the comfort level of
- 6:20where we all are when it comes to meditation. There's a lot of people,
- 6:24they're not really comfortable yet with just meditation.
- 6:28And usually I start it off where I just tell everybody, just concentrate on your breathing.
- 6:33It doesn't have to be deep inhales or strong exhales. It's just concentrating
- 6:39on your breathing because it's something to focus on.
- 6:43And I know you scolded me, too, on this as far as intentional breathing and
- 6:48breath work, where you don't ever want to use the word breath work because it's not work.
- 6:54This is what we do normally, and it makes complete sense to me.
- 6:59And that's what people don't understand. When I say just focus on your breathing,
- 7:04it's not focus on actually doing it because we do it regardless,
- 7:08and we just focus on that in and out.
- 7:11But now when it comes to intentional breath work And like you said the patterns
- 7:15of it The sound of it Many people are not comfortable with it Because it's just more or less the.
- 7:23And then you have a pattern to it Like you said based upon Whatever you feel
- 7:29is most comfortable for you It's loud But on the same token There's primal screaming,
- 7:36Drumming and all this Where it's a complete release It's primal It's strong
- 7:43It's supposed to be loud It's not supposed to sound normal It's energy It's
- 7:49energetic And it's powerful,
- 7:51And that's why I would like to incorporate a little bit of this Or at least
- 7:57encourage someone to try doing this Because it might work for them You tried
- 8:03it It's changed your life This could very easily change somebody else's life.
- 8:10Most definitely. And I have gotten a lot of feedback on the breath.
- 8:20As some of you might know who are listening, I typically do sound baths with
- 8:27the crystal sound bowls, and I like to practice with sound healing.
- 8:33But what really matters is that I'm going to be.
- 8:37Inspired me to start that was the breath.
- 8:41The breath is really kind of where I started, like from the ground up.
- 8:45And I didn't need any tools or supplies or anything for that.
- 8:51I even had a broken phone at the time, which I couldn't really even type on
- 8:56because it would glitch.
- 8:58So I'd be in there breathing and trying to just communicate in the chat my experience,
- 9:04and it wasn't quite working, but it just goes to show that you don't need to
- 9:09put a lot of thought into it.
- 9:11You don't need to have a lot of money. You don't need to have a lot of things.
- 9:15And it kind of brings you back to the source of it all.
- 9:19Where you're not relying on external things to be a source of your happiness
- 9:26and you can just sit with you and yourself.
- 9:30So I am also really excited to kind of just share that experience that not only me,
- 9:38but a lot of people in the collective have had when it comes to the power of breath.
- 9:45And it just seems a little, I always like to joke because sometimes I think
- 9:52back to in the past when people have told me, just breathe, like when I'm upset.
- 9:57And people tell me, just take a second and breathe.
- 10:00And I would get so pissed off at that because it's like, what do you mean just
- 10:05breathe? I am breathing. I'm upset.
- 10:07But now there's a completely different meaning to that because I opened my mind
- 10:13to something that was not typical of me.
- 10:17And I focus on my breath now, I just still have taken that with me throughout
- 10:23my experience, and I can use that modality for the rest of my life.
- 10:29That makes total sense. And yeah, it's true.
- 10:34People do always say, hey, just breathe. And if you can imagine yourself at
- 10:37your most emotional state, like the most upset, and it's very difficult in that
- 10:44moment to actually catch your breath.
- 10:46So if you can just picture going into that intentional breathing and just snapping into it.
- 10:53Because even just a while ago when I did just a few of the, you know,
- 10:58intentional breeze, I was just, ah, just a couple of them.
- 11:02And all of a sudden I'm feeling a little bit more energy.
- 11:05It's an exchange of oxygen. I mean, it's, it's all scientific too.
- 11:09When you think about it, um, not really hyperventilation.
- 11:13If you're doing it on a rhythmic pattern, you're allowing Larger amounts of
- 11:19air into your body Filling your lungs And it's oxygenizing the blood.
- 11:24That scientifically, medically Changes your body To where it's able to cope
- 11:30Or basically like a coping mechanism For whatever situation that you are in So yeah,
- 11:37just doing that quick breathing like that It does,
- 11:42it changes everything Physically as well as mentally,
- 11:46And so that's why I like when people say, yeah, just breathe, just breathe.
- 11:49It's difficult in that moment to accept it. But if you did do the practice of
- 11:55intentional breathing, then yeah, it does.
- 11:58It makes perfect sense. And you could be so angry.
- 12:02And that intentional breathing, correct me if I'm wrong, I mean,
- 12:06everybody's different, but it'll probably sound very angry.
- 12:10If you're very sad, it might sound sad, but at the same time,
- 12:14you're doing something to help the situation.
- 12:18Sometimes I surprise myself with the sounds that come out when I'm breathing.
- 12:23It's like, whoa, where did that come from?
- 12:26But it is also empowering to know that I have the power to release that and not hang on to that.
- 12:35And I say that a lot, but I still struggle with that.
- 12:42I'm not always able to fully release all of my anger and the negative emotions
- 12:49that I might experience.
- 12:51But it's with the practice of it, incorporating it into my daily life,
- 12:59rather than just taking 20 minutes to breathe on a random Saturday,
- 13:05and then, you know, going back about my life,
- 13:08taking the time to actually retrain my nervous system so that,
- 13:13yes, that experience is still there. I had that experience.
- 13:17I'm a human, so yes, I have that memory.
- 13:20The memory might not ever go away, but it's the feeling that is attached to
- 13:24that memory that we're focusing on,
- 13:27reframing our nervous system so that when we think about that memory or that
- 13:32thing that is really upsetting to us, the more and more time that we work on
- 13:36it, we're able to feel a different way in our body when we think of it.
- 13:42It happened, but it's okay now. It wasn't okay then, but it's okay now.
- 13:46So it's just like that present moment, momentum that you got to get into.
- 13:53Yeah. I'm hoping people are not scared to take the first place.
- 13:59Breaths you know because yeah i know
- 14:02it's brought up so often it doesn't sound i
- 14:07don't know i hate to say normal but what is normal um you work with sound bowls
- 14:13as well it's it's a continuous sound and sound is frequency and that frequency
- 14:18changes us the sound bowls that you have i love them i i'm always so drawn into any type of sound,
- 14:25especially like wind chimes and certain bells.
- 14:28And I practice with binaural beats. It's all sound.
- 14:33So when we're going into intentional breathing, it's not bells.
- 14:39It's not chimes. It's not a sound ball.
- 14:42It is your own body resonating a frequency that's coming outwards.
- 14:49And maybe doing it in church or school might be, you know, weird or odd.
- 14:55But when you're sitting alone and you're doing a meditation and you start that
- 14:59intentional breathing, that sound is between you and your thoughts, really.
- 15:06And once you sit and accept it.
- 15:11For just what it is, it's beautiful.
- 15:15And especially the fact that it's doing something for you. Like I said,
- 15:19I'm going to do it again. Ah.
- 15:22Ah. Ah. It's strong. It's powerful.
- 15:29And I feel something with it. Does it sound normal? To me, it does.
- 15:34Yeah. Again, it's just heavy, deep breathing, but it's very intentional.
- 15:40And you're focusing on something.
- 15:43So a lot of people are uncomfortable with the breathing and the panting-like
- 15:50state because it probably reminds them of a sexual nature,
- 15:54probably because as we have discussed in previous episodes between me, you, and Lizzie,
- 16:02the over-sexualization of the human race in general.
- 16:09So when people hear that, it could make them uncomfortable for a lot of different
- 16:14reasons. And there's no shame in that either.
- 16:17We're not here to make anyone feel uncomfortable for feeling uncomfortable when these feelings come up.
- 16:25It's more about feeling the feelings and letting them be and knowing that it's
- 16:30okay, you know, to be uncomfortable.
- 16:34And it's okay to be comfortable, too. Yeah, and listen, sexuality too as well
- 16:40is another form of energy exchange as well.
- 16:42There's nothing to be uncomfortable with that.
- 16:46So, yeah, just relating the sound to one thing is incorrect.
- 16:52It can be related to so many different things. And once we focus it on our state of health...
- 17:01Our state of meditation we realize it's just completely normal and there's really
- 17:06nothing wrong with it especially once you give an explanation hey this is what
- 17:10intentional breathing is this is what it sounds like it's no different like i said than going to a,
- 17:16primal screaming you know group and they're going to sit there and they're just going to scream,
- 17:23it's completely out of the ordinary but there's a focus to it and there's reasons
- 17:29behind it so So everyone should just take some time, learn it,
- 17:34listen to the sound within, especially the earlier episodes.
- 17:38You know, Hannah Rose did talk and explain it, and you could hear her doing it as well.
- 17:43You follow her on TikTok, too.
- 17:46It's there, and it might actually be something that you're comfortable with
- 17:51and you actually get some benefits from.
- 17:54And that's why I'm bringing up this whole episode, because I like to bring things
- 17:57that might help. And like I say, it helps me. And I actually learned this.
- 18:01I knew, and again, I knew this in the past, but I knew it as breath work.
- 18:09And again, I don't want to be scolded. It's so, it really is so,
- 18:15like, it's hardwired in my brain now. It's intentional breathing.
- 18:19And again, it makes sense. There's no work to it. It's just breathing.
- 18:25And I learned that through Hannah Rose When I started, you know,
- 18:29seeing her TikToks And hearing her sound bowls and all And then hearing her
- 18:33actually performing the intentional breathing,
- 18:36It gave me something else to put in my toolbox You know, from,
- 18:41okay, I'm not, nothing's really working right now So let me try the intentional
- 18:45breathing And it did work, and it still works And that's why I appreciate Hannah,
- 18:49because you did You bought something new to the table and hopefully this could
- 18:54reach a lot more people for their meditation.
- 18:58I hope so. I hope it does, too. And I'm really glad that you had me on today to discuss it,
- 19:03because it's always fun to just talk about an experience that has been really
- 19:10helpful in my life and that has made not-so-good experiences better.
- 19:16And so I'm hoping that anybody out there that is hearing this is inspired to
- 19:22take the time to breathe.
- 19:26Yes take the time to breathe take the time to meditate that's what it all boils
- 19:31down to i'm hoping everybody that's following this series has done the meditations
- 19:36and rather than always just tuning in to me you should be doing this on your
- 19:42own sitting aside that 10-15 minutes a day,
- 19:46find that space and no matter what you do whether it's a guided meditation a
- 19:50focused meditation a transcendental meditation, intentional breathing,
- 19:54whatever it might be, that you're actually doing it.
- 19:57The more we do it, the more practice you do at it, the more regular it becomes,
- 20:02the more regular it becomes in your body.
- 20:05So Hannah, real quick, where can you be found? What's your handle again on TikTok?
- 20:11So my handle on TikTok is Hannah Rose.
