- 0:01Speaker 1: I don't know why you girls aren't attracted to me,
- 0:04Speaker 1: but I will punish you all for it. If I
- 0:07Speaker 1: had it in my power, I would stop at nothing
- 0:11Speaker 1: to reduce every single one of you to mountains of
- 0:15Speaker 1: skulls and rivers of blood.
- 0:17Speaker 2: 22-year-old Elliot Rodger broadcast his hatred for women and the
- 0:22Speaker 2: world for months on his YouTube channel. And yet, no
- 0:25Speaker 2: one knew that the day he referred to as his
- 0:28Speaker 2: day of retribution was on the horizon. It was a
- 0:31Speaker 2: day that would rock the college community of Isla Vista
- 0:34Speaker 2: to its core, result in the death of six innocent people,
- 0:37Speaker 2: and expose the man behind the murders as a narcissistic
- 0:40Speaker 2: coward desperate to be viewed as a supervillain.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I will punish all of you for it. You will
- 0:47Speaker 1: finally see that I am, in truth, the superior one.
- 0:53Speaker 1: The true alpha male. Yes.
- 1:01Speaker 2: This is the case of the Isla Vista incel, Elliot Rodger.
- 1:05Speaker 2: We'll dive into his 141-page manifesto, the final message he
- 1:09Speaker 2: left behind, and the childhood and adulthood that led to
- 1:13Speaker 2: his twisted mental state.
- 1:15Speaker 1: You will all be animals. You are animals, and I
- 1:19Speaker 1: will slaughter you like animals.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Elliot Rodger was born in 1991 into a life of
- 1:24Speaker 2: luxury and privilege. His father, Peter Rodger, was a successful
- 1:28Speaker 2: film director. and his mother, Ong Lee Chin, worked as
- 1:31Speaker 2: an on-set nurse on blockbuster movies, making a decent living
- 1:34Speaker 2: for herself full of opportunity. His grandfather, George Roger, was
- 1:39Speaker 2: a revolutionary photojournalist known for his heartbreaking and enlightening photos
- 1:42Speaker 2: of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Photos such as this, which
- 1:47Speaker 2: show the mass graves of hundreds of innocent people. After
- 1:50Speaker 2: taking these photos, showing the carnage of racism, he never
- 1:53Speaker 2: photographed war again. Instead, deciding to take photos of nature...
- 1:57Speaker 2: and daily life across the globe. The influence that taking
- 2:01Speaker 2: photos of concentration camps had on him would one day
- 2:04Speaker 2: be lost on his own grandson. In Elliot's manifesto, he
- 2:07Speaker 2: frequently displayed his racist beliefs, stating at one point, How
- 2:11Speaker 2: could an inferior, ugly black boy be able to get
- 2:14Speaker 2: a white girl and not me? I am beautiful, and
- 2:17Speaker 2: I am half-white myself. I am descended from British aristocracy.
- 2:22Speaker 2: He is descended from slaves. I deserve it more. When
- 2:26Speaker 2: Elliot was four, his grandfather passed away. At the time,
- 2:30Speaker 2: Elliot was on a vacation in Greece with his parents,
- 2:33Speaker 2: and at that point he had traveled to six different countries,
- 2:36Speaker 2: the U.S., Greece, Malaysia, the U.K., France, and Spain. He
- 2:40Speaker 2: would later boast about this, yet at the same time
- 2:43Speaker 2: complain about how bitterly unfair life was to him. For
- 2:47Speaker 2: the first few years of his life, he attended Dorset
- 2:50Speaker 2: House School, one of the oldest private prep schools in
- 2:52Speaker 2: the country. His grandmother, Ah Ma, moved into the home
- 2:55Speaker 2: to help raise him. And soon, his younger sister Georgia
- 2:58Speaker 2: was born when Elliot was five. That same year, the
- 3:02Speaker 2: family moved to Woodland Hills, California, a relatively wealthy neighborhood
- 3:06Speaker 2: in the San Fernando Valley. Peter, eager to expand his
- 3:09Speaker 2: career as a director, felt it was the best choice
- 3:12Speaker 2: for their family to be as close as possible to
- 3:14Speaker 2: Los Angeles. Eventually, the family moved up the hill to Topanga,
- 3:18Speaker 2: a creative community in the Santa Monica Mountains where they
- 3:21Speaker 2: lived in a lavish house that Elliot grew to love.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Around this time, he started going to school at Topanga
- 3:26Speaker 2: Elementary School, a school known for its enrichment programs, plays,
- 3:30Speaker 2: and musical programs, which all take place at this outdoor amphitheater.
- 3:35Speaker 2: It was at this time that Elliot's parents divorced. Elliot
- 3:39Speaker 2: was heartbroken by the news, and wrote in his manifesto
- 3:42Speaker 2: about how visiting his father's house without his mother there
- 3:45Speaker 2: was challenging. In elementary school, Elliot had several friends, including
- 3:50Speaker 2: a girl named Maddie. He would later say that she
- 3:53Speaker 2: was his first... and last female friend. As they grew up,
- 3:57Speaker 2: he began to resent her. In college, he called her spoiled,
- 4:00Speaker 2: and upon seeing a picture of her with her friends
- 4:02Speaker 2: at USC, he wrote, I would take great delight in
- 4:05Speaker 2: torturing and flaying her and every single one of her spoiled, obnoxious,
- 4:08Speaker 2: evil friends. This was a childhood best friend. Someone who
- 4:13Speaker 2: he took baths with, ran through the grass and parks with,
- 4:16Speaker 2: and formed some of his earliest memories with. She had
- 4:20Speaker 2: the exact same financial and educational upbringing as him. And yet,
- 4:25Speaker 2: because she was a woman, she deserved not only to die,
- 4:29Speaker 2: but to be tortured. That hatred towards women began to
- 4:33Speaker 2: bubble up for Elliot towards the end of elementary school
- 4:35Speaker 2: and at the beginning of middle school. Elliot was on
- 4:38Speaker 2: the autism spectrum and struggled with social interaction. Heading into
- 4:42Speaker 2: middle school, he was known as the quiet, shy kid.
- 4:45Speaker 2: He claims that he was picked on mercilessly, despite trying
- 4:48Speaker 2: to fit in by dyeing his hair blonde and skateboarding.
- 4:52Speaker 2: In middle school, he developed a crush on a fellow classmate,
- 4:55Speaker 2: a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl who was actually a grade below him.
- 4:59Speaker 2: When he perceived her as making fun of him, he
- 5:01Speaker 2: was devastated. From then on, he became terrified of, desperate for,
- 5:06Speaker 2: and resentful of women. Wanting attention, but unsure of how
- 5:10Speaker 2: to get it, he began to act out in school.
- 5:14Speaker 2: He believed that infamy was better than obscurity, so he
- 5:17Speaker 2: did all he could to annoy his peers and garner
- 5:19Speaker 2: their attention, be it negative or not. In a way,
- 5:22Speaker 2: it worked. In his own words, he became the weird,
- 5:27Speaker 2: annoying kid. He began spending all day, every day, playing
- 5:31Speaker 2: the game World of Warcraft, or WoW. He was well
- 5:35Speaker 2: aware that he was using the game as an escape,
- 5:38Speaker 2: but he didn't care, often spending anywhere from 10 to
- 5:41Speaker 2: 16 hours a day playing. This became a problem when
- 5:45Speaker 2: his father remarried a Moroccan actress named Somaya Akabune. She
- 5:49Speaker 2: soon gave birth to his little brother, Jazz. Worried about
- 5:52Speaker 2: Elliot being isolated and socially behind, she repeatedly tried to
- 5:56Speaker 2: get him to engage with the world around him, but
- 5:59Speaker 2: Elliot was reluctant to try. Immediately, this caused a huge
- 6:03Speaker 2: rift between Somaya and Elliot. At this point, Elliot believed that,
- 6:07Speaker 2: as the eldest son, he should have more say in
- 6:10Speaker 2: the house than a woman should. Acting as a parent
- 6:13Speaker 2: and rational human being, Somaya didn't take kindly to this.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Before his freshman year, Pita and Somaya planned a two-month
- 6:21Speaker 2: trip to Morocco, where she was from. They thought that
- 6:24Speaker 2: by taking Elliot out of his shell and into a
- 6:26Speaker 2: different environment, he would grow confidence. Instead, he tried to
- 6:31Speaker 2: run away the day before the trip. His reluctance to
- 6:34Speaker 2: go was summed up in his manifesto, where he wrote,
- 6:37Speaker 2: The country is very backward. They didn't even have the
- 6:40Speaker 2: latest video game. En route to Morocco, he was forced
- 6:43Speaker 2: to fly commercial rather than first class, which he complained
- 6:46Speaker 2: about at great length. He went on to describe the
- 6:49Speaker 2: flight to Morocco as, quote, the worst flight of my life.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Elliot mused in his manifesto if his life could get
- 6:55Speaker 2: any worse at this point. In his eyes, it did.
- 7:00Speaker 2: In high school, he described being bullied even more. During
- 7:03Speaker 2: his freshman year, he learned that some of his classmates
- 7:05Speaker 2: were having sex. He stated that learning this was the
- 7:08Speaker 2: most devastating and traumatizing thing he'd ever heard in his life.
- 7:12Speaker 2: After accusing a classmate of lying and being shown a
- 7:14Speaker 2: sex video in response, Elliot had a breakdown and was
- 7:17Speaker 2: withdrawn from the school. His teen years were a rollercoaster.
- 7:22Speaker 2: He switched high schools twice, and his mother had to
- 7:24Speaker 2: move to an apartment due to the financial failure of
- 7:27Speaker 2: a movie his father invested in. He wrote, My mother
- 7:30Speaker 2: decided to move to an apartment in Woodland Hills. I
- 7:33Speaker 2: reacted indignantly. An apartment? I'd never lived in an apartment before,
- 7:38Speaker 2: and I thought of apartments as being poor and low-class.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I would be embarrassed to admit it to anyone. Though
- 7:44Speaker 2: the apartment he moved to was one of the nicest
- 7:47Speaker 2: in the area, Elliot felt it was demeaning to live
- 7:50Speaker 2: there and refused to invite anyone over or reveal he
- 7:53Speaker 2: lived in an apartment. Soon after he graduated college, he
- 7:56Speaker 2: was struggling. His mother got him a life coach and
- 7:58Speaker 2: encouraged him to get a job, but he refused, writing,
- 8:02Speaker 2: My mother wanted me to get a retail job, and
- 8:04Speaker 2: the thought of myself doing that was mortifying. It would
- 8:07Speaker 2: be completely against my character. I am an intellectual who
- 8:11Speaker 2: is destined for greatness. I would never perform a low-class
- 8:14Speaker 2: service job. Elliot undeniably thought very, very highly of himself.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Girls should be going for intelligence, sophistication, men who are civilized,
- 8:33Speaker 1: men like me.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Elliot was convinced that women should be attracted to him.
- 8:39Speaker 2: designer clothes, drove a BMW, and, in his own words,
- 8:42Speaker 2: was intelligent. He would frequently go to bookstores and stand around,
- 8:46Speaker 2: waiting for women to approach him. At times, he would
- 8:49Speaker 2: just drive his car around college campuses and park with
- 8:52Speaker 2: the windows down, expecting a potential partner to strike up
- 8:55Speaker 2: a conversation with him. When he revealed his frustration about
- 8:59Speaker 2: not having a girlfriend to a family friend, he was
- 9:02Speaker 2: given advice to strike up a conversation with a woman
- 9:04Speaker 2: by complimenting her. At the very least, he'd make a friend.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Weeks later, when asked if he had tried this approach,
- 9:11Speaker 2: Elliot was indignant. He responded, This was Elliot's philosophy on
- 9:21Speaker 2: relationships in general. He frequently complained about people rejecting him,
- 9:25Speaker 2: yet he never approached people with a smile nor conversation,
- 9:29Speaker 2: and never offered them friendships. When he began attending school
- 9:33Speaker 2: at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he would drive
- 9:35Speaker 2: around filming videos where he made commentary about the students
- 9:38Speaker 2: passing him by. These videos provide good insight into his
- 9:42Speaker 2: state of mind.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Right now I'm going on a little tour through Isla
- 9:46Speaker 1: Vista on a Friday night.
- 9:52Speaker 3: This is when all the college parties happen.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Look in there. There's a party happening right now. So
- 10:06Speaker 1: many beautiful girls walking around here. But they would never
- 10:11Speaker 1: give me a chance. See, look at that one. I
- 10:14Speaker 1: just passed one.
- 10:16Speaker 4: They would reject me at every turn. Young couples walking around.
- 10:30Speaker 4: It makes me so envious.
- 10:33Speaker 2: At this point in 2013, Elliot had already dropped out
- 10:36Speaker 2: of two colleges, unable to handle seeing couples. On several occasions,
- 10:41Speaker 2: he walked out of classes simply because he saw a
- 10:43Speaker 2: man and woman kissing or holding hands. He described the
- 10:46Speaker 2: rage he felt as insurmountable. At UCSB, known for being
- 10:51Speaker 2: a party school on the beach, Elliot felt he had
- 10:53Speaker 2: a chance at losing his virginity. However, after only days there,
- 10:57Speaker 2: that hope was fading. During his first week, he learned
- 11:01Speaker 2: that the friend of one of his temporary roommates had
- 11:04Speaker 2: had sex with a white girl when he was 13. Enraged,
- 11:07Speaker 2: Elliot had to stop himself from throwing orange juice at
- 11:09Speaker 2: the man. He went to his room and sobbed, describing
- 11:12Speaker 2: it as a traumatic entrance into his new life in
- 11:15Speaker 2: Isla Vista. As I stated before, he wrote, How could
- 11:19Speaker 2: an inferior ugly black boy be able to get a
- 11:21Speaker 2: white girl and not me? I am beautiful. I am
- 11:24Speaker 2: half white myself. I am descended from British aristocracy. He
- 11:28Speaker 2: is descended from slaves. I deserve it more. I tried
- 11:32Speaker 2: not to believe his foul words, but they were already said,
- 11:35Speaker 2: and it was hard to erase from my mind. If
- 11:37Speaker 2: this is actually true, if this ugly black filth was
- 11:40Speaker 2: able to have sex with a blonde white girl at
- 11:42Speaker 2: the age of 13 while I've had to suffer virginity
- 11:44Speaker 2: all my life, then this just proves how ridiculous the
- 11:47Speaker 2: female gender is. They would give themselves to this filthy scum,
- 11:51Speaker 2: but they reject me? The injustice! From then on, his
- 11:56Speaker 2: outbursts got worse. After seeing a Mexican man kissing a
- 12:00Speaker 2: white girl, he was tempted to throw a drink at them.
- 12:03Speaker 2: When he saw a couple kissing at a Starbucks the
- 12:04Speaker 2: next day, he followed them and threw a coffee cup
- 12:07Speaker 2: at their car. This eventually became a frequent routine of his,
- 12:11Speaker 2: following couples, throwing drinks at them. Elliot started to unravel completely.
- 12:16Speaker 2: In 2013, he gained two new roommates at USCB, Weihan
- 12:21Speaker 2: David Wang and Changyuan James Hong, two 20-year-olds studying computer engineering. Immediately,
- 12:28Speaker 2: Elliot hated them, describing them as, quote, the biggest nerds
- 12:31Speaker 2: he had ever seen. Everyone else, however, described the boys
- 12:35Speaker 2: as kind, giving, and charismatic. It was around this time
- 12:39Speaker 2: that Elliot began procuring handguns for his plan to enact
- 12:42Speaker 2: revenge on the world for rejecting him. The plan, he outlined,
- 12:46Speaker 2: would start with killing his roommates, then luring people into
- 12:49Speaker 2: his apartment, torturing them, and putting their heads in bags.
- 12:53Speaker 2: The next day, he would kill his little brother so
- 12:56Speaker 2: he wouldn't grow up to surpass him and his stepmother,
- 12:59Speaker 2: planning the attack for May when his father would be
- 13:01Speaker 2: on a business trip. Then, he would return to Isla
- 13:04Speaker 2: Vista and kill as many women as possible before pouring
- 13:07Speaker 2: the heads onto the street. For weeks, he posted videos
- 13:11Speaker 2: detailing his struggles with women on his YouTube channel.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Hey.
- 13:15Speaker 4: Hey.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Elliot Rodger here.
- 13:19Speaker 3: Right now I'm just taking a walk through the park
- 13:22Speaker 3: in this really nice secluded area. I'm just contemplating about
- 13:28Speaker 3: my life and how unfair it's been lately. Ever since
- 13:33Speaker 3: I started desiring girls, but they never desired me back.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Life has been a living hell since then. Everyone else
- 13:42Speaker 3: my age is out having fun with their friends and
- 13:44Speaker 3: their girlfriends. Here I am, taking lonely walks through a park.
- 13:52Speaker 1: All of you sexually active men, I hate you. I
- 13:55Speaker 1: hate all of you.
- 13:56Speaker 2: And on May 23rd, Elliot began what he called his
- 14:00Speaker 2: day of retribution. At the last minute, his father came
- 14:04Speaker 2: home from his trip, forcing Elliot to stand down on
- 14:06Speaker 2: murdering his little brother and stepmother. He had no idea
- 14:10Speaker 2: how much this action changed the course of his family's
- 14:13Speaker 2: future until his son had already committed his heinous crime.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Elliot practiced stabbing the pillows and mattress in his bedroom
- 14:20Speaker 2: before ambushing David as he entered the apartment. David tried
- 14:24Speaker 2: his hardest to stop the attack, but with no weapon,
- 14:27Speaker 2: he was stabbed 15 times and slashed 23. James was
- 14:32Speaker 2: stabbed 25 times soon after when he walked into the apartment.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Elliot dragged their bodies to a corner of a bedroom
- 14:38Speaker 2: and covered them both with blankets and clothes, trying to
- 14:41Speaker 2: conceal them for the next part of his plan. But
- 14:45Speaker 2: things don't always go as planned. 19-year-old George Chen, a
- 14:49Speaker 2: close friend of both Elliot's victims, led himself into the
- 14:51Speaker 2: apartment to visit them. A vicious fight began, where Elliot
- 14:54Speaker 2: stabbed George 94 times. As he was bleeding out, Elliot
- 14:58Speaker 2: dragged him into the bathroom, where he took his final breaths. Then,
- 15:02Speaker 2: Elliot casually went to Starbucks to get his usual, a
- 15:05Speaker 2: triple vanilla latte. After returning to his apartment, he sent
- 15:09Speaker 2: 34 people his full manifesto. This list of people included
- 15:13Speaker 2: his parents, childhood friends, and former teachers and therapists. He
- 15:17Speaker 2: then uploaded a seven-minute video titled, Elliot Rodger's Retribution.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Hi. Elliot Rodger here. Well, this is my last video.
- 15:31Speaker 1: It all has to come to this. Tomorrow is the
- 15:35Speaker 1: day of retribution. The day in which I will have
- 15:39Speaker 1: my revenge against humanity. Against all of you. I'm 22
- 15:45Speaker 1: years old, and I'm still a virgin. That has been
- 15:48Speaker 1: very torturous. It's not fair. I will punish all of
- 15:53Speaker 1: you for it. You will finally see that I am,
- 15:57Speaker 1: in truth, the superior one. The true Alpha Male. Yes.
- 16:09Speaker 2: As he waged to Alpha Phi's sorority house to kill
- 16:11Speaker 2: as many women as he could, people in the valley,
- 16:13Speaker 2: a good hour and a half away, were receiving his manifesto.
- 16:17Speaker 2: His former therapist was the first to open it. A
- 16:19Speaker 2: few sentences in, they knew they had to warn Elliot's
- 16:22Speaker 2: mom and law enforcement that something was deeply wrong. Elliot's mother, father,
- 16:27Speaker 2: and stepmother contacted one another and began to race toward
- 16:30Speaker 2: Isla Vista after Elliot refused to answer any of their calls.
- 16:33Speaker 2: As they careened down the 101, breaking news came across
- 16:36Speaker 2: the radio. There was a mass shooting at UCSB. Their
- 16:41Speaker 2: hearts sank. On campus, Elliot had rushed Alpha Phi. But
- 16:46Speaker 2: after not being able to get inside, he turned to
- 16:48Speaker 2: three girls on the sidewalk and shot each of them.
- 16:51Speaker 2: 19-year-old Veronica Weiss was shot seven times. 22-year-old Catherine Cooper
- 16:56Speaker 2: shot five. Within seconds, both Veronica and Catherine were dead.
- 17:00Speaker 2: The third woman who was shot, Bianca, was clinging to
- 17:02Speaker 2: life on the sidewalk. She later told news outlets that
- 17:05Speaker 2: Elliot was smiling as he fired the shots at them.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Bianca called her mother, screaming into the phone that she
- 17:11Speaker 2: was going to die as she bled on the sidewalk.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Law enforcement and bystanders descended immediately, comforting Veronica and Catherine
- 17:18Speaker 2: as they took their last breaths. A bystander took Bianca's
- 17:21Speaker 2: phone and assured her mother Bianca was going to survive.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Elliot continued on his rampage. He fired into Ivy Deli Mart,
- 17:30Speaker 2: resulting in dozens of students scattering and hiding for their lives. Unfortunately,
- 17:34Speaker 2: 20-year-old Christopher Michaels Martinez was shot as he entered the
- 17:37Speaker 2: store through the door. Elliot then fired into Pizza My Heart,
- 17:41Speaker 2: a restaurant, but thankfully only grazed a passerby in the arm.
- 17:45Speaker 2: He continued on this path, hitting one man with a vehicle,
- 17:48Speaker 2: shooting a cyclist in the thigh, and stopping to intimidate
- 17:51Speaker 2: a woman who was walking alone. He called out to her,
- 17:54Speaker 2: hey what's up, before he raised the gun and fired
- 17:56Speaker 2: at her. Fortunately, he missed. He tore down the street,
- 18:01Speaker 2: hitting everyone he could with his car. Upon seeing deputies,
- 18:05Speaker 2: he exchanged gunfire with them, thankfully missing them. When he
- 18:08Speaker 2: took a shot in the hip, he raised the gun
- 18:10Speaker 2: to his head. After killing several people and terrorizing many more,
- 18:15Speaker 2: Elliot ended his life. His body lay on a dirty
- 18:19Speaker 2: street as detectives swarmed the scene. Six people were killed
- 18:24Speaker 2: by this cowardly hand, and many more were injured and traumatized.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Several families and communities were in mourning, and the memorial
- 18:33Speaker 2: services for the lost students were attended by thousands. Elliot
- 18:37Speaker 2: wanted to be addressed as the Supreme Gentleman. Of course,
- 18:42Speaker 2: He was anything but. In the aftermath of the murders
- 18:45Speaker 2: he committed, many have spoken out about the radicalization that
- 18:48Speaker 2: can happen to young men in forums on the internet. Unfortunately,
- 18:51Speaker 2: that still takes place today. If you'd like to see
- 18:55Speaker 2: our video on Alec Manassian, who was inspired by Elliot
- 18:58Speaker 2: to commit a heinous crime of his own, take a
- 19:00Speaker 2: look at it here. Unlike Elliot, he lived to tell
- 19:03Speaker 2: the tale, and his reasoning is just as twisted.
