- Morgan and Rachel: We are two working moms, running our own businesses, and navigating the messy middle. This is Closets and Conversations. We're so excited for episode one of our podcast today. Yes. What are we doing, Rachel? I don't know that either of us know that, but let's ask some questions so our listeners can get to know us a little better. Yes, I love that. I'll go first. Okay. ⁓ what is something that you are very high maintenance about in life? I like my house and my surroundings. very tidy. Like I want the dishwasher first thing in the morning. I want it put I need to put it away right away. I'm gonna run it at night. I have kids. I don't really want clutter around. I had to get a little more lenient about that. But I feel like if you ask this question to my husband and kids, they would be like, she's crazy about messy stuff. Stuff. I love it. Alternatively, my car is a dumpster fire. Okay. It's full of junk and it's you never hear about your car as much as your house. No. Yeah. Well, because you're not in it as much. Yeah. In fact, sometimes if there's like weird clutter that I don't know what to do with, I put it in my car. Or I have a relatable story. We actually have a car in front of our house that's not running. And we're actually as like a side storage. It's a storage unit. 100%. Perfect. Okay, we'll be relate on that. Yeah. Okay. Okay. What about you? Same question for you. I am really high maintenance about clean sheets. I really love having clean sheets. Clean sheets. That's so good for you. Don't ask me about my sheets. And here's the deal. It's not that I I don't change them like every day. I hope not. Because I'm not a psycho. Right. And I don't have that time. No. But we're maybe like every week. Yeah, that's good. And the crisp sheet feeling of it tucked in and like a very high maintenance about like everything has to be kind of settled for me to be able to get I agree with that and I make my bed almost again with the tidiness of the house, I make my bed almost immediately. So much in fact there have been times on the weekend when my husband maybe he got up to go to the bathroom and he comes back and he's like, ⁓ we're up for the day. So he moved the pet while he was up. Like super fast. I love that. No, I so something actually my husband and I talked about is trying to make our bed more. Because I usually get up before he does. And then if I'm like on to other things, so sometimes I don't pop back in there and do it. But the days that I make the bed, I'm like Everything in the world is right. I've never had a day that I didn't make the bed. Wow. That's pro I mean, maybe when I was a kid, but as an adult, I like have to. And if for some reason it doesn't happen right away, which I it wanted to. And I also let me let it be known, I don't care about anybody else in their bed making. If they don't make their bed, I don't care. Well, if they don't live in my house, I want my kids to make their bed. But I mean to my to our listeners. If you're not a bed maker, that's okay. Yeah. So, okay. All right. ⁓ question for you. Mm-hmm. When you're getting ready. Okay. Do you put on your outfit first or do you do your hair and makeup first and then put on your outfit? Well, this question. It's hair, makeup, outfit. Yeah. Are you wearing a robe? Yes. Like if I just got workout clothes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Or sometimes if it's if it's like in the morning and I shower the night before, I'll just get ready in my pajamas. Yeah. Yeah. I ⁓ I'm the same. I do my Well, hair and makeup can be interchangeable, but always outfit last. In fact, I probably from having when my kids were little and wearing like a cute outfit to work, I would put my outfit on very last so it wouldn't get messy. Yes. But it's turned into this thing. So I have a robe, it's leopard print and I love it. It has silky and I wear it all the time until right before I leave. And at this point my kids are getting older and I think they're like, put on some clothes. Especially like they have a friend over, and I don't care. So like this is my rogue time. It's my rogue time. It's important. I can't do my makeup and then my hair. It's it's I have to be that specific. I mean, unless I'm just gonna like do a pullback bun. Mm-hmm. Because I feel like And great hair you have. ⁓ thank you so much. The volume. I've been jealous of it all day. All day I've been jealous of it. ⁓ yeah. ⁓ okay. Another question for you. Yep. What's something that you're terrible at, but people assume you're good at? ⁓ I guess I'm not terrible at it, but I think people would think I don't like it. Or they they would think I like it and I don't. It's I do a lot of like social media stuff for my business and reels and videos and photos and I I don't like any of that. I don't wanna I don't wanna I don't wanna do it. Yeah. I I it's like a necessary hard. So hard. It takes so much time. Mm-hmm. And I get a lot of anxiety about it. I have some like social anxiety, even though I'm an extrovert. Yeah. Isn't that interesting? It is interesting. I think you can be both. Yeah, I do too. And you talk to people all day long. Yeah. But I think that still can live inside of you. Yeah. I think that social media also is like for me as a perfectionist type A person. Yeah. It is like I'm like, this post isn't 100% perfect. Right. You know, the caption's not perfect. And it just split like Halt me. Or I sometimes have to be like, check myself like Morgan. Nobody actually cares. Just post it. Right. Right. Right. Right. Yeah. Which we've learned with setting up to this podcast. Yeah. This is a whole new world for us. A whole new world. But we're doing it. We're doing it. We're here. Yeah. ⁓ do you want one more question? sweet or salty snack. ⁓ my gosh. Love that. I think. You have to think about it this long. Sweet. Well kind of depends on my new. But if if I was to just like go for it, sweet. Is there a specific sweet or just want to leave it there? Chocolate. Chocolate. You know, chocolate. I've been eating a lot of those ⁓ what are those like little individually wrapped chocolates with the peanut butter inside. They're like three crabs of sugar each. ⁓ it's the kind. ⁓ Right in the show notes. Put that in the show notes. They're so good. And that like I don't guilty doing the Yeah, yeah. I love that. Okay. I'm salty all the way. You are. Yeah. Like cheese chips. Cheese. Chips. Chips were cheese. Yeah. But definitely salty. Yeah. There are times when I'm Cheez it's it's a good chip and a cheese together. I love cheese. It's extra toasty. Mm. Preferred. If I was gonna do like a s little snack during the day, it's chips and salsa. ⁓ that's crazy. Salty chips and salsa. I love that. So yeah. Okay. I love it. All right. Should we talk about kind of what we're doing? What are we doing? Do we know what are we doing? How do we know each other? Let's talk how we know each other. Okay. Morgan and I met each other. What did we just decide? ⁓ I think that you probably have your version and I probably have mine version. Okay. How we know each other. You go first. ⁓ okay. So we met in what we think probably like 2001, 2002. Yeah. And I was managing a Play-Doh's closet in Chesterfield. Right? Yeah. That was the location. ⁓ yeah. And I had lots of high school students in and out rot you know, a rotating cast of characters. Retail. A retail. and Morgan started and I do remember her being very put together for whatever age you probably were. Like you were a good girl. Okay. And like responsible. Like I feel like give me like your schedule parameters and ⁓ you know, like you were I'm not surprised that now you're an organizer. Like that tracks. That tracks. Okay. And ⁓ yeah, so and also I guess for those of you who don't know what Planner's closet is, it's a resale shop. So you can go and sell your clothes. Yes. Dream job for a teenager. In fact, anyone listening that has teenage daughters, they should work there because let's be real, we took all the good stuff. ⁓ that was the good stuff never makes it to the floor. I think that was ninety five percent of the reason why I wanted to work there. Absolutely. This is close and you can you know so reasonable. So reasonable. ⁓ recently my oldest daughter is twelve, and now she wants to go to Plato's closet and we went and she wants to go with me because I'm I'm good at I'm an expert at the yeah, I mean I don't want to dig through, but I can do it. And if you know, you get the you get in mode, you get the zone. The thrill of the hunt is the best thing. I learned that from my mom. The best thing in the world was the thrill of the hunt. Yes. So yeah. So I it was my first job in a closet. And were you sixteen? I was sixteen. I might have dealing with a workers' permit. Remember my dad dropped me off a couple of times? Yeah. Like I was on the verge. Yeah. ⁓ it was my first job. Mm-hmm. You know, in your first job you don't know what you're doing. But I remember Rachel as like the cutest, best outfits, lots of gold jewelry. Still, lots of jewelry. Yeah. That was even crazier back then. Bubbly with like the customers. Yeah. yeah. So that's how we originally, originally met. Yes. And then through the years our paths have continued to kind of intertwine. I mean, we probably went a long while without seeing each other. Yes. Yes. And then the next time I remember we crossed paths again was your store in Maplewood. your leopard store and we have your store at Maplewood. Yes. ⁓ I was shopping with a couple of friends. Okay. I have two friends in town, business of two college friends in town, and we popped into your store. And I was like, you know, I think you were like, how do we know each other? Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. I do remember this. Play this closet. I knew it immediately. Yes. ⁓ my God. Play this closet. So that's like the next time I think that we probably bumped into each other. And then I did that speak a little speaking thing at a mom's group that we were a part of. Yep. And you walked in with your rack and I was like, ⁓ that's Rachel. Yeah. And so we said hey and you were like, Do you have a kid? I was like, I have a kid now. June. June. June. I have a three year old daughter, June. She was she was really little that like I think she was maybe one. Yeah. Yes. Little. Yeah. That time. So you did a ⁓ presentation for us. Yes. Which the mom's love. It was fun. It was fun. That group of women, there is something about being around a group of women, especially if they have something In common that gets you to a deeper place right away. Like that, for example, that was a group of moms that had children in preschool or under. Yeah. I recently did ⁓ an event, it was sort of a hosted thing in Los Angeles for one of my brands, but all the women that were there were boutique owners. And immediately you just get deep right away because you have so much commonality. Relatability. Yes. Yes. It's huge. That's what we want this podcast to be. Yes. Yes. Yeah, 'cause you're kind of in like the trenches together. Yeah. The same similar problems, same exact things. I think it's the same with motherhood, right? Especially for little ones. For sure. Trying to navigate through everything, you're second guessing everything. And to be able to sit at a table with other moms to be like, Is this happening to you? Yeah. Yeah. And each stage is so different. And I feel like that kind of brings us to we the next time we bumped into each other. Yeah. So so I took over as a leadership position in This mom's group. Yes. This was two years later. And we were coming up with our social calendar. Mm-hmm. And I was like, we should do Rachel from leoparding. Okay, because the moms loved it. Cause let's be serious. When you've had a baby too, your body changes. Yeah. And you're like trying to like find your identity, your new you're trying to like fit clothes for a different body. You're just gonna feel good. Yeah. And so I think that's what you do really well in your store. Well. think you're moms and women feel like that not just moms but women of all yeah different types so anyways we I said we should do this and the other moms of the leadership group are like yes let's do this so I reached out to you please come do a presentation for us yeah and then you said yeah and let me invite you to the store for shopping night. Yeah so then all the people that came we invited them ⁓ we do private shopping nights kind of like a women's night at our shop ⁓ we donate them for auction for when people ask for donations and things like that, or I'll just host one because I am in the mood. And this was such a great group of women. I was like, let's get them into the store. So we did an after hours night, ⁓ you know, snacks and wine discounts. And it's really they really, really are fun because it's again, you're around a bunch of women and it wasn't like pressure for shopping. It was more of a hangout. But if you want to try stuff on, you all these opinions of people who you trust and who you know. Yeah. And we just got to talking, I think we were talking about Let me also first say too there was a moment in the night when there was like a bunch of the moms were in the dressing room and everybody was like Rachel, Rachel, Rachel, Rachel, everybody like needed it was like mom, everybody needed your like I love that though. I love that. I love that. Yeah. I love to feel needed. But yeah, so so okay. ⁓ one of the moms was buying a pair of jeans. Yes. Really awesome jeans. And she were recommending maybe not dry in the Yeah. Dryer. Yeah. Yeah. To which she I think she said something like, ⁓ I d like jokingly, I don't think I can get these now. Cause she was like, I'm gonna have to dry everything rest of my life. And we started talking about laundry. Laundry. The never ending task of laundry. Laundry. And even if you finish it all, you're wearing clothes that maybe will need to be washed. ⁓ never ending. And never ending. And we were talking about the socks because a lot of the moms there had little kids, but even if you have older kids, socks. So many socks. Yeah. So many socks and so annoying and then you have to match them all up. I can't. Some people just put the socks straight in the drawer. The only like rogue? Yes. Loose socks? Yes. I'm like, I could never do that. No, no, no, no. I may need to be paired. Yeah. Yeah. Must be paired. Some people wear mismatched socks. And you know what I say to them? Good for you, but I don't want to do it. I can't do that. ⁓ you were talking about and also just about how long laundry takes. And we were like, if you had it, if we just had a podcast. Like, is this a podcast? Like for women to listen to while they're doing their laundry. Maybe they get a little a little parenting tip. Maybe they get a little organizational tip. Maybe a little dash in tip. Yeah. Maybe a little home hack. Mm-hmm. And we were like, ha ha ha ha. Yeah. But a lot of the women that were in that room that night, mm-hmm, they liked our banter. They liked our our ideas. The cheekiness of it. Yes. They did. Yes. So So we want our separate ways. Again. Yes. Like Rachel and I have done many times. Yes. Yes. And it was maybe like a week later or something. And I was like, it was something in my head that I'm like, Morgan, is this something you should do? And and like life is busy right now. Yeah. Yeah. But it was like something that was nagging at me so much that I'm like, would I be mad at myself if I didn't explore further? Right. So I sent you a text message. Long, long text. I and I think it was first and also let me tell you, it took me a minute to be like, Should I send this? No, I'm not gonna send this. I'm gonna send this. No, let's do don't sell this. You Which I'm so bad that you would have felt that way. But it is interesting. I mean, up until that point, you and I weren't texting back and forth about anything in our anything, really. I mean that was purely like schedule, shopping parties, schedule, speaking events. Right. What's the timing? Yeah. Yes. And this was I said I think it I started it with like, Thank you so much for having the moms into your store. It was so wonderful. I was like formal. Let me really like butter you up you know, butter you up with this. Thank you so so much. And then I said, by the way, why can't I not stop thinking about this podcast idea? Yeah. And I was just like, let's just see what happens. Yes. And so I received the text and similar to you, I just life is busy. I mean, owning my business keeps me busy. Having kids keeps me busy, keeping a house together. I mean, I've got to I need to make it bed every morning. So I'm busy and adding one more thing feels felt daunting, but there was something about in me too that was like, ⁓ that would be really, really fun. And you are very organized. Thank you. and I don't think if you hadn't had your like persistence with the organization of it all, this would have happened. ⁓ Well, I also want to say. She sends calendar invites. She sends goo little Google invites. And a lot of people send me Google invites. And I want everyone to know I see them. And did you know that if you don't do anything with them, they still show up in your calendar? They're just gray. But I guess this makes people upset. Yeah. So I've it's something new that I'm gonna I'm I'm adopting I am accepting the invites. I don't know why I wasn't. I think I I don't really know. I don't really have a reason for. Well, something we should get into later. That's something I learned recently about Rachel is our planner differences. So we should get into that later. Yes, yes, yes. That's an important repeat of this. It is. It is. It is. Without the calendar invites that I wasn't accepting but still seeing. Yeah. That's why we're that's why I'm here today. Except you didn't send one today. I didn't send one today. You're right. That's right. I woke up, I thought today's the day of podcast. Why don't I see ⁓ my grade out unaccepted invite. Where's the unexpected? Where is it? Yeah. But you showed up anyways. Yeah. Well, and I I think too, the idea of doing a podcast has always been something fun. Like on those and like, ⁓ can we can I do like a creative thing? But doing it with somebody else who you relate to, yeah. I think is also makes it more fun. ⁓ for sure. And then I think speaking about what our story and like what we want to put out there really like is something that means a lot. So yeah, here we are. Here we are. What we're gonna do at the end of each podcast is we're gonna do a tiny life upgrade. ⁓ just an easy thing. Yeah. That we don't wanna add any stressors. This is not a motivational podcast. No. It's just maybe something that like a little tip you could take. I think my tiny life upgrade from episode one of podcast is to just accept where you are. That's good. That's good. People can do that. Yeah. People can do that and they will do that. And I love that. Okay. All right. ⁓ stay tuned for episode two. That's right. And go ahead and close us out. Remember, you don't have to have it all figured out. We certainly don't. We'll see you next time, friends. Bye. Bye.
