- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo! We've made it to episode one hundred. That's a big deal. Luna: Oh wow, one hundred episodes. That is a big deal! I feel like we've learned so much, Lucas. I still remember struggling with 'goedemorgen'. Lucas: And now you can buy fruit, order coffee, even ask for medicine at the pharmacy. I'm proud of you. Today, let's go back to a place we visited recently: the bookshop. Luna: Oh, I love bookshops. But I remember we only did the basics last time. What are we adding? Lucas: We'll practice a full conversation: walking in, asking for a specific book, checking the price, deciding to buy it, and paying. Let's start with the first thing you say when you enter. Luna: Okay, I think I remember. 'Ik zoek een boek.' That means 'I'm looking for a book.' Right? Lucas: Exactly. Ik zoek een boek. Let's say it together. Ik zoek een boek. Luna: Ik zoek een boek. Lucas: Perfect. Now, imagine you see a book you like. You want to ask if they have it. You say: 'Heeft u dit boek?' — 'Do you have this book?' Luna: Heeft u dit boek? That sounds like 'have you this book?' Sort of. Lucas: Exactly, word order is different in Dutch. Heeft u dit boek? Try it. Luna: Heeft u dit boek? Lucas: Yes. Now the bookseller might tell you the price. But you can also ask: 'Hoeveel kost dit boek?' — 'How much does this book cost?' Luna: Hoeveel kost dit boek? That's a long one. Hoeveel... kost... dit boek? Lucas: You're almost there. Break it down: hoe-veel, then kost, then dit boek. Hoeveel kost dit boek? Luna: Hoeveel kost dit boek? Lucas: Yes. Now, if you decide to buy it, you say: 'Ik neem het.' — 'I'll take it.' Luna: Ik neem het. That's short and sweet. Ik neem het. Lucas: And then at the counter, you ask: 'Mag ik betalen?' — 'May I pay?' Luna: Mag ik betalen? That's polite. Mag ik betalen? Lucas: Perfect. So let's put it all together. You walk into a bookshop, you say: Ik zoek een boek. Then you see one and ask: Heeft u dit boek? The bookseller says yes, and you ask: Hoeveel kost dit boek? They tell you, and you say: Ik neem het. Then at the register: Mag ik betalen? Luna: Oh, that feels like a real conversation! Let me try it all in one go. Ik zoek een boek. Heeft u dit boek? Hoeveel kost dit boek? Ik neem het. Mag ik betalen? Lucas: That was excellent. A tiny stumble on 'Hoeveel', but you corrected yourself. Great job. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. You know, it's funny — a hundred episodes ago, I couldn't even say 'hallo'. Now I'm having a whole bookshop conversation. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress like this too, you might want to think about supporting the show. Lucas: Yeah, a couple of dollars a month is genuinely what keeps these going. Buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, if you've gotten something out of them. Luna: Absolutely. Every little bit helps us keep making episodes. Okay, back to books! So, Lucas, can we practice with a real scenario? Say I'm looking for a Dutch grammar book. Lucas: Sure. So you walk in and say: Ik zoek een boek. Luna: Ik zoek een boek. Lucas: Then the bookseller asks: 'Welk boek zoekt u?' — 'Which book are you looking for?' You can say: 'Ik zoek een Nederlands grammaticaboek.' — 'I'm looking for a Dutch grammar book.' Luna: Ik zoek een Nederlands grammaticaboek. That's a mouthful. Lucas: Break it down: Nederlands, then grammatica, then boek. Ik zoek een Nederlands grammaticaboek. Luna: Ik zoek een Nederlands grammaticaboek. Lucas: Good. Now the bookseller shows you one. You ask: Heeft u dit boek? Luna: Heeft u dit boek? Lucas: They say yes. Then you ask: Hoeveel kost dit boek? Luna: Hoeveel kost dit boek? Lucas: They say it's twenty euros. You decide: Ik neem het. Luna: Ik neem het. Lucas: And at the counter: Mag ik betalen? Luna: Mag ik betalen? Lucas: Perfect. You just bought a grammar book in Dutch. That's episode one hundred for you. Luna: Feels great. Let's review one more time? Ik zoek een boek. Heeft u dit boek? Hoeveel kost dit boek? Ik neem het. Mag ik betalen? Lucas: You've got it. And listeners, practice those phrases. Write them down, say them out loud. See you next episode. Luna: Tot ziens!
